Mrs. Winchester’s Omen: Earthquake, Apparition, and the Changing House

Queen Anne Victorian architecture—or “Queen Anne Revival”—is a misnomer, bearing little resemblance to the restrained, dignified buildings of England’s early‑eighteenth‑century Queen Anne. Instead, it reflects the exuberance and eclectic spirit of Queen Victoria’s later reign. Far from a pure revival like the Gothic or Greek, the Queen Anne style freely borrowed from multiple eras, blending towers, turrets, verandahs, porches, gables, and bays into lively, asymmetrical compositions. Rooted in the picturesque principle, the Winchester Mansion embraces symmetry, irregularity, and romantic flourish, its architecture so theatrically expressive that Victorian design and restless spirits seem almost destined for one another — as though the very structure had been conceived with haunting in mind from the first stroke of its blueprint. Yet no such blueprint has ever been found. In the lore that clings to its corridors, Heiress Sarah L. Winchester is said to have raised this palatial labyrinth not merely as a home, but as a vessel for the unseen — a sanctuary where wandering spirits might find passage, solace, or judgment within its ever‑shifting walls, guided by plans whispered from realms beyond mortal sight. . However, we, who send wireless messages through space and draw flames out of the air, agree that nowadays nobody believes in ghosts. Phantoms prowl only to disturb the slumbers of those who have looked on the red lobster and duskily rich plum pudding too affectionately, and in the Winchester Mansion, there exists a secret society organized for the purpose of exposing ghosts and being invited into their favorite lair. No census has ever been released to the public of the well-authenticated family of ghosts in the mansion, nor have any statistics been unrestricted as to the number of haunted encounters on the estate. If they could be disclosed, it is safe to say that the figures would not only surprise the average American, but prove that ghosts die hard in the Winchester Mystery House. #RandolphHarris 1 of 6

It is the curious and the eccentric aristocrats who refuse to deny ghosts both shelter and respect, and what is a little overwhelming to some Americans is to find how very seriously ghosts are considered by the laborers and the Lords. Active middle-class folk do not ordinarily have much time to spare for speculation on the supernatural. Yet, it can be shown that even in this excessively incredulous day, some of the busiest and most highly regarded ghosts in the Winchester Mansion are still conducting their blood-curdling business at the antique stands where they have been practicing as spectres for ages. The mansion creates haunting energy because of its excess, its shadowed corners, its ornate drama, its hidden rooms, and its beautiful but bizarre features. A few defining elements: pointed arches, steep gables, spires that look like they are reaching for something unseen. The carved wood, ironwork, stained glass, patterned wallpapers. Every surface feels like it is hiding a story. Doors that open onto walls — often remnants of remodels or blocked‑off servant routes, now feeling like portals that forgot their purpose. Staircases that lead to nowhere — truncated attic stairs, abandoned servant access, or architectural flourishes that became dead ends. Trap doors — used for coal chutes, storage, or mechanical access, but narratively perfect for secret passages and sudden disappearances. Closets that are deeper than they should be — narrow, elongated spaces that seem to extend farther than the geometry of the house allows. Rooms with no apparent function — tiny chambers tucked between larger rooms, sometimes only accessible through another room’s closet. False windows — decorative exterior windows that do not correspond to any interior space, suggesting a room that “should” exist but does not. Speaking tubes — hollow metal tubes running through walls, perfect for carrying whispers long after the household staff is gone. A door that opens onto a two‑story drop — a perfect example of Victorian theatricality turned perilous, a threshold that promises passage but delivers only vertigo. A staircase whose steps rise only two inches high — a baffling ascent that feels more like a ritual than a route, forcing visitors to climb in slow, unnatural increments, as though the house were testing their patience or resolve. A room with one entrance but three exits — each more treacherous than the last, including one that opens directly onto the kitchen sink below, a sheer drop so abrupt it feels like the house itself indulging in a dark, private jest, a little cruelty whispered through its carpentry. #RandolphHarris 2 of 6

The mansion’s bizarre nature did not end with its haunted corridors or shifting hours; its very architecture seemed to conspire in the uncanny. Mirrors were positioned not merely for illumination but for light management, catching gaslight and flinging it into distant corners so that glimmers appeared where no person stood — fleeting reflections that moved like wandering spirits. Hidden throughout the estate were secret eaves rooms, tiny crawlspaces tucked behind paneling or accessible only through ceiling hatches, narrow chambers meant for listening rather than living. Basement coal rooms — pitch‑black chambers with soot‑stained walls and low ceilings, often left untouched for decades. Ornate radiators — clanking, hissing, and groaning with thermal expansion, sounding uncannily like breathing. Overly tall doors — exaggerated proportions that make rooms feel stretched or distorted. Cupolas and widow’s walks — elevated spaces associated with watching, waiting, and mourning. Labyrinthine floor plans — narrow hallways, servant staircases, unexpected alcoves. Perfect for echoes and apparitions. Gaslight glow — warm, flickering illumination that leaves pockets of darkness where spirits linger. The Victorian architecture of the Winchester Mansion does not just house spirits — it invites them. There is, for instance, a young noble man dressed in late Renaissance attire—a ruffled collar, richly embroidered doublet, which were hallmarks of 16th-century Europe. His face is pale and smooth, with delicate, symmetrical features—a straight nose, soft lips, and large, dark eyes that convey quiet intelligence and restraint. His hair is short and dark, neatly framing his youthful face. Nobody knows how long has been haunting the regal mansion, except perhaps the Winchester family, who could tell when he first appeared and the tragic circumstances out of which, in good orthodox fashion, he was evolved. However, the Winchester family always refused to discuss the young man, whose duty is to herald the approaching death of anyone in the mansion. #RandolphHarris 3 of 6

He is known to appear only in the Blue Séance Room—an ancient, brooding chamber tucked deep within the mansion’s oldest wing—and always at the hour of dusk, when the last light bleeds into shadow. He materializes with the poise of a young noble: shoulders drawn back, chin lifted, his manner confident yet curiously restrained, as though he carries the etiquette of a long‑dead court. In the dimming glow, his figure seems to gather its own faint radiance, his Renaissance attire shimmering with a quiet, mournful dignity. He is the very image of youthful aristocracy—cultivated, solemn, and brushed with an otherworldly melancholy. But the mansion does not always grant him this grace. Witnesses speak in hushed voices of encountering his ruined form drifting through distant corridors: a young man decapitated, his eyes torn from their sockets, his hair brutally shaved, his right shoulder ripped open with blood soaking the front of his shirt. Some have seen him cleaved cleanly at the waist, the two halves floating independently like sorrowful relics of a forgotten execution. These apparitions—so grotesque, so impossible—have long terrified and enthralled those who dwell within the mansion’s reach. Yet the greatest unease comes not from his mutilation, nor from his persistence, but from his uncanny resemblance to Mrs. Winchester herself. The likeness is unmistakable, though he predates both her and the mansion by centuries. Rumor insists he was her estranged nephew, arriving to collect a generous sum, only to vanish without a trace. But how could a prince of the sixteenth century share blood with a woman said to be born in the nineteenth? And why does no record agree on the true date of her birth? In the end, the mystery coils back upon itself, as all good hauntings do. The young man’s presence suggests that time within the mansion does not flow forward, but folds—layer upon layer—until centuries touch, and bloodlines blur, and the living find themselves staring into the face of a ghost who should never have existed at all. #RandolphHarris 4 of 6

After the 1906 earthquake, Mrs. Winchester never again found contentment within the walls of her great mansion. The damage had unsettled not only the structure but her spirit, and she soon began making plans for a second estate not far from the original grounds. She even commissioned the construction of a sea wall for the new property, though the project never advanced beyond its early stages. While the Winchester Mansion underwent repairs and restoration, she withdrew entirely from its corridors and chose instead to live aboard a houseboat, drifting at a quiet remove from the place that had once consumed her life. When she finally returned to her estate, she often stood at the window, letting her gaze drift across the serene expanse of her beautifully kept yard. One morning, as the first pale ribbons of sunlight unfurled across the lawn, she paused, sensing that the quiet held something new. For a long while she remained at the window, her hand resting lightly against the cold glass. The young prince stood by the crescent‑shaped hedge below her window, emerging from the pale hush of early morning—a time he never kept. He was a creature of dusk, of long shadows and fading light, yet now he stood in the newborn glow as if torn out of his rightful hour. The dawn clung to him awkwardly, casting a thin, uneasy shimmer around his figure. Something was wrong. His presence at daybreak felt less like a visit and more like an omen, a quiet rupture in the order of things that the mansion itself seemed to acknowledge. Mrs. Winchester had always been sensitive to signs, to whispers, to the subtle language of fate. And now, with the ruins of the tower still haunting the grounds and the fourth floor freshly stripped away, she felt the young man’s appearance entwine itself with the earthquake in her mind, merging into a single, undeniable warning. She drew back from the window slowly, her breath shallow. His disappearance left a tremor in the air, a subtle shiver that seemed to ripple through the morning light. It was not the garden that had changed, but something within her—some inner axis knocked slightly off its center. The silence he left behind felt charged, as though the omen had not ended with his vanishing but had slipped inside her, altering the shape of her thoughts in ways she could not yet name. As she stood there, steadying herself against the cold glass, her gaze drifted instinctively toward the front of the mansion. That side of the house — the grand façade, the towering heights, the rooms that had once reached toward the sky — had always felt exposed, vulnerable, too close to the world’s gaze. It was the part that reached outward, inviting scrutiny, inviting disaster. The quake had punished it most severely, tearing down everything she had dared to build upward. #RandolphHarris 5 of 6

Now, in the wake of the prince’s early‑morning appearance — a violation of his rightful hour — the meaning settled over her with quiet certainty. His presence had not been random. It had been a message. A confirmation of what she had long suspected: she had spent too much of her life, her energy, her grief, on the front of the house. That night, she summoned her carpenters and instructed them to board up the entire front wing. Windows were shuttered, doors sealed, corridors closed off like tombs. She turned her attention instead to the back of the mansion — the winding hallways, the hidden chambers, the places where the house seemed to grow inward rather than outward. There, she resumed her work with renewed fervor, as though the apparition had redirected her hand. From that evening onward, the crescent hedge remained untouched, the boarded façade loomed in silence, and Mrs. Winchester devoted herself entirely to the mansion’s shadowed rear. Some said she was following the guidance of spirits. Others whispered that she was fleeing them. But she alone knew the truth: the earthquake had shaken the house, and the boy had shaken her resolve. Together, they had turned her away from the front — and deeper into the labyrinth she was destined to build. Today, as visitors wander through the mansion, the stained glass scatters light into fractured colors that seem to catch and refract passing apparitions. The grand staircases rise like stages awaiting spectral entrances, their landings steeped in a hush that feels almost rehearsed. Even the sealed conservatories breathe with cold air and faint rustling, as though unseen hands still tend the plants that once grew there. In the grand ballroom — and in the unfinished hidden ballroom— soft echoes drift through the air, the suggestion of music that never resolves into a melody. Several corridors carry whispers and footsteps that fade before reaching the main hall, as if the house itself edits what it allows the living to hear. The Winchester mansion feels less like a structure and more like a living organism, its walls layered with memory. The spirits that move through it are not intruders but simply another part of its anatomy, lingering in the spaces where time folds and refuses to let go. #RandolphHarris 6 of 6

Hopefully, these photographs offer a clearer sense of what the Winchester Mansion looked like before the 1906 earthquake reshaped it. Experts estimate that the mansion once rose nine stories high, that Mrs. Winchester purchased roughly 740 acres of surrounding land, and that—despite modern measurements placing the house at about 24,000 square feet—many researchers and enthusiasts believe the structure is significantly larger even today. At its height, the estate reportedly contained between 500 and 600 rooms. Now, only four stories remain, with 160 rooms in total, approximately 110 of which are open to the public. The grounds have been retained at a beautiful park‑like acreage of four. Construction was nearly continuous. From 1886, when Mrs. Winchester first purchased the farmhouse, until her death in 1922, the mansion evolved through an unbroken cycle of building, altering, expanding, and repairing—a forty‑year transformation that remains one of the most extraordinary architectural undertakings in American history.

GODISNOWHERE

To the generous mind, the heaviest debt is that of gratitude when it is not in our power to repay it. Every language in the world has a way of saying “thank you.” This is because gratitude is an inherent quality that resides within each human being, and is triggered and expressed spontaneously in a variety of different contexts. Gratitude crosses all boundaries—creed, age, vocation, gender, and nation—and is emphasized by all the great religious traditions. Gratitude is essentially the recognition of the unearned increments of value in one’s experience—the acknowledgement of the positive things that come our way that we did not actively work toward or ask for. Gratitude is a feeling that spontaneously emerges from within. However, it is not simply an emotional response; it is also a choice we make. We can choose to be grateful, or we can choose to be ungrateful—to take our gifts and blessings for granted. A thankful person is unmistakable. Gratitude shapes their speech — their sentences are threaded with kindness, positivity, and a quiet strength that uplifts everyone around them. People who live in thankfulness rise effortlessly; their progress is almost impossible to hinder. There is a lightness in the way they communicate, an ease that reflects humility and inner depth. They do not posture or boast. Instead, they carry a gentle self‑deprecating charm that makes them approachable, appealing, and deeply human. People who practice gratitude are attractive and admired. There is something magnetic about them. Such people exude strength, and they empower those around them. The Lord has promised, “He who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious.” People who have gratitude in their hearts cannot be bitter, resentful, or mean-spirited. #RandolphHarris 1 of 22

We should be thankful for the wonderful blessings that are ours and for the tremendous opportunities we have. We can be thankful to our parents, family, friends, and teachers. We should express appreciation to everyone who has assisted us in any way. We should thank our Heavenly Father for His goodness to us by acknowledging His hand in all things, thanking Him for all that He gives us, keeping His commandments, and serving others. We should especially thank Him for His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, for the Savior’s great example, for His teachings, for His outreaching hand to lift and help, and for His infinite Atonement. However, sooner or later, all of us experience times when the very fabric of our world tears at the seams, leaving us feeling alone, frustrated, and adrift. The doctrine that all men are made appears to conflict with a historical perspective on the nature and destiny of man: it appears to swallow all cultural variety, all historical change into a darkness in which all cats are gray. However, this objection neglects the richness and complexity of the Freudian theory of neurosis. In the first place, there are several distinct kinds of neurosis, each with a different set of symptoms, a different structure in the relations between the repressed, the ego, and reality. We are therefore in a position to return to the varieties and complexities of individual cultures if we entertain, as Dr. Freud does in Civilization and Its Discontents, the hypothesis that the varieties of culture can be correlated with the varieties of neurosis: “If the evolution of civilization has such a far-reaching similarity with the development of an individual, and if the same methods are employed in both, would not the diagnosis be justified that many systems of civilization—or epochs of it—possibly even the whole of humanity—have become ‘neurotic’ under the pressure of civilizing trends? To analytic dissections of these neuroses, therapeutic recommendations might follow which could claim a great practical interest.” #RandolphHarris 2 of 22

And furthermore, it is a Freudian theorem that each individual neurosis is not static but dynamic. It is a historical process with its own internal logic. Because of the basically unsatisfactory nature of the neurotic compromise, tension between the repressed and repressing factors persists and produces a constant series of new symptom-formations. And the series of symptom-formations is not a shapeless series of mere changes; it exhibits a regressive pattern, which Dr. Freud calls the slow return of the repressed. It is a law of neurotic diseases, he says, that these obsessive acts increasingly come closer to the original forbidden act itself. If we take it seriously, the doctrine of the universal neurosis of mankind therefore compels us to entertain the hypothesis that the pattern of history exhibits a dialectic not hitherto recognized by historians, the dialectic of neurosis. A reinterpretation of human history is not an appendage to psychoanalysis but an integral part of it. The empirical fact which compelled Dr. Freud to comprehend the whole of human history in the area of psychoanalysis is the appearance in dreams and in neurotic symptoms of themes—both ritualistic and mythical—in the religious history of mankind. The link between the theory of neurosis and the theory of history is the theory of religion, as is made perfectly clear in Totem and Taboo and Moses and Monotheism. And the link affects both ends linked. Dr. Freud not only maintains that human history can be understood only as a neurosis but also that the neuroses of individuals can be understood only in the context of human history as a whole. From the time when he wrote Totem and Taboo (1913), Dr. Freud says in Moses and Monotheism (1937), “I have never doubted that religious phenomena are to be understood only on the model of the neurotic symptoms of the individual.” #RandolphHarris 3 of 22

According to the analogy elaborated in Moses and Monotheism, “In the history of the species, something happened similar to the events in the life of the individual. That is to say, mankind as a whole passed through conflicts of a sexual-aggressive nature, which left permanent traces, but which were for the most part warded off and forgotten; later, after a long period of latency, they came to life again and created phenomena similar in structure and tendency to neurotic symptoms.” This analogy supplies Dr. Freud with his notion of the “archaic heritage”; mankind is a prisoner of the past in the same sense as “our hysterical patients are suffering from reminiscences” and neurotics “cannot escape from the past.” Thus, the bondage of all cultures to their cultural heritage is a neurotic constriction. And conversely, Dr. Freud came to recognize that the core of the neuroses of individual lay in the same “archaic heritage,” “memory traces of experiences of former generations,” which “can only be understood phylogenetically.” The repressed unconscious which produces neurosis is not an individual unconscious but a collective one. Dr. Freud abstains from adopting Dr. Jung’s terms but says, “The content of the unconscious is collective anyhow.” Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny (each individual recapitulates the history of the race): in the few years of childhood, “we have to cover the enormous distance of development from primitive man of the Stone Age to civilized man of today.” From this it follows that any theory of neurosis must ultimately include a theory of history; and, conversely, any adequate theory of history must take account of neurosis. The individual’s inner conflicts and the culture’s outer pressures are never independent phenomena. They shape and mirror one another. The man I shall call George was thirty‑three years old when I first encountered him, and I admitted him to a psychiatric hospital. He reported that his trouble was “nervousness,” though he could offer no clear account of what he meant by the term. His complaint, vague yet urgent, was itself a symptom — an expression of the diffuse anxiety that arises when personal history and cultural history converge in a single, troubled life. #RandolphHarris 4 of 22

George was remarkably self-composed, showed no indication of restlessness or anxiety, and could not mention anything that he worried about. He went on to state that his alleged nervousness was caused by “shell shock” during the war. He then proceeded to amplify on this in an outlandish story describing himself as being cast twenty feet into the air by a shell, landing in his descent astride some iron pipes, and laying totally unconscious for sixty days, during all of which he hovered between life and death. A physical examination showed George without any evidence of injury of illness. In fact, he was a remarkably strong and active man, six feet in height, 170 pounds in weight. Later, in an athletic meet held on the hospital grounds, he showed himself an exceptional sprinter and broad-jumper, surpassing many able competitors ten years younger than himself in these events. Prolonged observation and psychiatric study brought out no sign or suggestion of a psychosis or a psychoneurosis. Despite his original complaint of “nervousness,” he was at all times calm and without the slightest evidence of abnormal anxiety. He ate and slept well, did not complain of any worries, was free of phobias, compulsions, conversion reactions, tics, and all other ordinary neurotic manifestations. Records of this man’s career show that he has been confined in various mental hospitals approximately half the time since he became of age. In addition to periods ranging from a few weeks to six months at federal government institutions in Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida, he was also frequently sent by the Government to private psychiatric hospitals and invalids’ homes. Between these experiences, he spent a good part of his time in the local county jail or in other jails at Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, or other towns which he visited. He was taken in sometimes for drunkenness and disorderly conduct, at other times for writing bad checks, petty theft, reckless driving of automobiles, obtaining money under false pretenses, snatching the purse from a woman of the evening, taking possession of a house whose owners were off on vacation, et cetera. Extravagant but insincere threats to harm his wife and four children made after taking a few drinks and lunacy charges also accounted for a dozen or so arrests. #RandolphHarris 5 of 22

During all the observations at various hospitals mentioned above, as well as at a state mental hospital where George also spent a short time, no technical evidence of a psychosis or a psychoneurosis is mentioned. His wife and friends have repeatedly persuaded local authorities to consider him as mentally deranged and to have him sent to hospitals rather than let him face the various charges brought against him from time to time. On other occasions, when refused admission by hospitals that had already studied him more than once and declared him sane, competent, and not in need of psychiatric treatment, friends and relatives have had him arrested, prevailed upon local doctors to sign statements that he is deranged and dangerous, and brought pressure to bear so that hospitals, with the light in which the case was presented, had no choice but to readmit him. The doctors involved in such procedures, country practitioners for the most part, never mention technical evidence that would indicate a psychosis or a psychoneurosis as they are described in the textbooks. Such statements as the following are typical: “Something is decidedly wrong mentally. I don’t think I have ever come in contact with a man as unreliable as he is. He worries everybody that has fooled with him until they hate him. The County authorities are tired of boarding him as he is not a criminal.” (Family Physician.) “Everybody who comes in contact with him agrees that he should be confined permanently…very unreliable as to his word of honor.” (County Physician.) A physician who owns a private hospital located at a nearby town said, “We do not cater to his class.” He is described as frequently drinking whiskey to excess and as sometimes taking Veronal, Luminal, Amytal, and bromides to ease himself in the aftermath of a spree. Although there is no record of alcoholic hallucinations, many bizarre and notable actions are described when the patient has had something to drink: On a cold February day, he rushed, fully clothed, down to the creek and sprang in. After thrashing about, yelling and cursing to no purpose and creating a senseless commotion, he swam back to land without difficulty. One fine spring evening, he is said to have run entirely naked through the streets of the town. He once sat up all night under the house striking matches aimlessly. #RandolphHarris 6 of 22

Generally believed reports indicate that late one night he, with several drinking companions, succeeded in releasing a half-tamed bear from the cage in which it was kept at a filling station to attract trade. A good deal of fright, some civic uproar, and hasty precautionary measures ensued. Assiduous and painstaking effort by several local volunteers led to the bear’s relatively uneventful return to his cage. According to available information, the bear was not terribly dangerous but sufficiently so to make a man of anything like ordinary responsibility sharply retrain all impulses to loose him on the outskirts of an unprepared community. The patient denied having been a party to this exploit, but the evidence against him is strong. In view of this man’s failure to make any effort to conduct himself sensibly through many years, there is no wonder that many are found to say that he is of unsound mind. He has done no work, except for occasional periods when for a week or ten days, he would show considerable promise as an automobile salesman, clerk in a grocery store, soda jerker, bootlegger’s assistant, et cetera. It was not long before, in the language of an elderly uncle often called on to deal with these problems, he proceeded to “launch himself another pot-valiant and fatuous rigadoon.” After studies on his case were completed, and on the basis of his cooperative and technically sane behavior, he was given parole privileges. He promised, of course, not to drink or to break any other rule of good conduct and expressed many fine intentions positively and reassuringly. Six days later, he staggered into his ward and attempted to go to bed without being noticed by the attendant. On being found so plainly in his cups, he raged petulantly, first denied any contact with stimulants, and finally, with indignation, admitted having taken one-half glass of beer. His eyes were bloodshot, he could scarcely stand, and he spoke in wild, boastful, almost unintelligible accents. A bottle of cheap whisky was discovered hidden under his mattress. #RandolphHarris 7 of 22

According to the custom of the hospital, George was now confined to a closed ward where his superficial sanity stood out arrestingly from the delusional babbling and the blank-faced, staring inertia of his psychotic fellows. He was always intelligent and agreeable, frequently pointing out the obvious inconsistency of his being confined among “insane” people. Pleading important business downtown, he was, after three weeks, given a pass to go out in the care of a hospital attendant for a few hours. He returned in good condition, but when night came on, he refused to go to bed, cursed, and spat at the nurse who tried to advise him. His breath reeked of raw liquor, and a search disclosed a half-empty quart bottle in his pocket. The attendant who took him to town denied having allowed him to purchase whiskey and could only surmise in astonishment that the patient must have slipped off for a moment and obtained the bottle while pretending to go to the toilet. A few weeks after this incident, the patient’s wife came to town and asked to take him out on a pass, agreeing to assume full responsibility. When she returned him to the hospital, it was evident that he had drunk liberally, and the wife confessed herself as having been unable to deal with him. The next day, a man living near the hospital advised that he had fired a revolver at the patient on being alarmed by his behavior. As if trying to force his way in, George, after loitering about the premises boisterous and vaguely threatening, began to fumble at a window. The shot had not been aimed at George but only in his general direction in order to frighten him. This end was satisfactorily achieved, for at the report he made off in a clatter of undignified haste. #RandolphHarris 8 of 22

About a month later, on strong promises of good behavior, George was again given parole. Within a few days, he climbed over the fence and hired an automobile, which, after racing for a while about the road to no special purpose, he wrecked in the city streets and was taken to jail. This cycle of events was repeated several more times. The man was obviously not where he belonged when confined on a closed ward with extremely psychotic patients of the ordinary type. Just as plainly, he showed himself unable to remain on an open ward with mildly psychotic patients who succeeded in adapting themselves to a life of limited freedom. Finally, on being kept under close supervision for several weeks following a senseless and troublesome spree, he demanded his discharge in a well-written letter, emphasizing his sanity and the inappropriateness of his hospitalization. He was released accordingly. Six months later, he was sent back to the hospital from his local jail, where he had been confined after striking an African-American man with a poleaxe. He had, as was his wont, been drinking but showed little evidence of being affected by alcohol. The other man was walking peacefully by when our patient engaged him in a dispute about possession of the pavement. “Flown with insolence and [perhaps] with wine,” he found the other’s conciliatory attitude not to his taste, waxed more overbearing, and ended by felling his presumed adversary with a deft blow. He did not on this occasion seem to lose control of himself like a man in a genuine rage who might have struck blow after blow. His deed seemed prompted more by fractiousness and impulse to show off than by violent passion. Since only patients suffering from mental disorder in the commonly accepted sense are eligible, his application for admission was at first refused by the hospital. His wife and influential friends thereupon invoked higher authorities, who arranged for him to be taken. This time, he was again found to be free from all symptoms of recognized mental disorder and was classified as: (1) no nervous or mental disease; (2) psychopathic personality. He did not complain of nervousness as he had at the time of his first admission. Instead, he insisted that he was a sane and well man and demanded full privileges to come and go as he pleased, saying that the authorities who arranged for him to come to the hospital had promised him this. #RandolphHarris 9 of 22

It was plain that George regarded the hospital simply as an expedient by which he might escape the legal consequences of his behavior. After being kept for a few weeks on a closed ward, he was allowed to go out on the grounds alone with the understanding that after a few days, he would be discharged as sane and competent. He could not, however, keep out of trouble. On the third day of his freedom, he was seen by the guard driving at high speed through the gate in a car belonging to one of the physicians. Chase was offered, and after a lively race, he was overtaken about fifteen miles from the hospital, having battered in a fender and knocked off a headlight of the car on the way. It is hardly necessary to point out that this man had repeatedly been instructed in the rules to be observed while on parole, that he knew the driving of an automobile by a patient in this hospital to be a serious violation of his trust, not to speak of the theft, or the unauthorized borrowing he proclaimed it to be. When finally caught, he appeared as sane as before, showing no evidence of any episodic loss of his usual reasoning power. He had not been drinking when he took the automobile and, of course, the pursuit was too hot for him to obtain liquor while in flight, though in view of his previously demonstrated ingenuity and dispatch in fulfilling this want, it would scarcely have been surprising to find him properly raddled. On his return to the hospital, he did not show the slightest sign of remorse over having taken possession of and having succeeded in damaging the car belonging to a physician who had always been particularly for his deed he took as a matter of course, expressing neither gratitude nor satisfaction. In fact, he dismissed the whole matter as insignificant, and his prevailing attitude was that of a man generally ill used. Some weeks later, he was sent home. #RandolphHarris 10 of 22

About six months afterward, his wife sent an email to the hospital that she could no longer cope with her husband, whom she described as being still in such folly as that already recounted. He did not, however, arrive by train he boarded. It was subsequently learned that he got off along the way, obtained a few drinks, and made a clamorous nuisance of himself in the station until the police came to cut short his activities. A little later, he was readmitted following a series of misadventures in no way different from those already mentioned but including a period in Napa State Hospital. He was alert and rational and just as he had always been before, except for the presence of a urethral discharge of gonococcic origin. He gave a false account of his activities, saying that he had been working on a farm and had been in no trouble at all. The records showed that he had not turned his hand to make an honest dollar since he left and that a week had seldom passed without his buffoonish or antisocial activities arousing consternation in the neighborhood and bringing him to the attention of the police. He was freely communicative and scarcely waited for encouragement to explain how he came by his gonorrhea. The records show that after causing some commotion in town by maudlin or threatening outbursts on the streets and silly, pompous threats about harming his wife, he had been brought in, bedraggled and disconsolate, from a ditch where he lay and confined to jail. #RandolphHarris 11 of 22

The jail, George said, was crowded, and the jailor, who knew him to be a good fellow, placed him in a cell on the women’s section of the building. The bars of his cell were about six inches apart, and so, according to his story, he was separated from yet provocatively close to the women prisoners. These, his neighbors, were seven girls ranging in age from fourteen to twenty and awaiting transportation to the women’s reformatory. He said that at night, when the lights were out, these girls would disrobe and, coming to the bars, would entice him, calling him “Pretty Boy,” “Country Boy,” and otherwise teasing and challenging him until he began to indulge in sexual intercourse with them between the bars in order to make them leave him alone. He says that he continued this practice with each of them every night during the rest of his sojourn there, the transactions taking place always in the dark and through the separating barrier. From one or all of these women, he says he caught the gonorrhea which now troubled him. He appeared to be no little proud of this story which, however, is probably no more accurate than his stories of exemplary behavior and hard work or his frequently expressed intentions to conduct himself like a sensible person. During prolonged observation of him in the hospital, he showed himself more prone to drift about street corners and bars, to indulge in petty gambling or theft, to cadge and impose on chance acquaintances, or to raise some puerile and futile clamor than to seek intercourse with one woman, much less with many. #RandolphHarris 12 of 22

Since this last admission, his story has been the same as before. On recovering from gonorrhea, he was, after being found sane and competent, given freedom of the grounds. He soon left without permission and was found in the hands of the police. Back again on a closed ward, he was dissatisfied and, with irrefutable arguments, pointed out the incongruity of his being assigned to a place among men content to sit all day in silence staring blankly at nothing or who murmured incessantly that their heads were full of gold, radium, and diamonds, that they had no stomachs or intestines, that the Masons were playing on their sexual organs by radio, that they were sickened by the odor of the bells. It was here, however, that George had to be kept, a perfectly clear-minded person, neat, polite, and quick-witted, in striking contrast to his fellows, whose lips moved inarticulately as they responded to hallucinatory voices, and some of whom urinated and defecated on themselves, sought to eat dead roaches, et cetera. This was not, of course, an ideal environment for him. He was, therefore, replaced on the parole ward time after time, only to prove himself, after periods from a few days to a few weeks, unadaptable. When put on the closed ward among better-adjusted cases of schizophrenia or dementia paralytica, men who worked on farm detail or at woodwork, he took advantage of his situation and escaped. During much of his time in the hospital, it has therefore been necessary to keep him among the actively disturbed or badly deteriorated cases where supervision is complete, and possibilities of escape are limited. #RandolphHarris 13 of 22

When last heard from, he was again hospitalized. Opportunities are continually offered him to improve his situation. From time to time, parole is restored, and occasionally his wife takes him home on furlough. Always, however, he causes trouble for himself and others and always for no discernible purpose. The last news of him was that he violated his parole by leaving the hospital. After sustaining himself by his customary activities for a week or ten days, and staying clear of the police, he again came to grief. With the aim evidently of stealing a hen from a few fryers, or perhaps to evade pursuit, he slipped into an African American’s chicken house. Having brought along a bottle, and perhaps being delayed by needs to avoid detection, he drank injudiously. Next morning, he was found in the coop where he had apparently wallowed and groped through the night. Called by the farmer, attendants brought him to the hospital. Here on a closed ward, we find him, among helpless and irrational people, subject to the strict control and attention required for those who cannot direct themselves. Though he left school after completing the eighth grade, he writes letters which would do credit to a college graduate. In these, he insists on having his freedom, stating that his difficulties in the past have been minor and that he is ready and thoroughly able to settle down to an exemplary life. He often stresses the fact that his wife and children need his protection and support. His family history is entirely negative. Parents and grandparents were hard-working, sober folk, liked and respected in the little rural community where the present generation lives. One sister and three brothers are leading normal lives there. Although everyone’s situation is different, and the details of each life are unique, there is something that will take away the bitterness that may come into our lives. There is one thing we can do to make life sweeter, more joyful, even glorious. We can be grateful! It might sound contrary to the wisdom of the world to suggest that one who is burdened with sorrow should give thanks to God. However, those who set aside the bottle of bitterness and lift the goblet of gratitude instead can find a purifying drink of healing, peace, and understanding. As disciples of Christ, we are commanded to “thank the Lord our God in all things,” to “sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving,” and to “let our heart be full of thanks unto God.” #RandolphHarris 14 of 22

However, in some families, the relationships among the members are those of strangers among strangers. Everyone plays his or her part. The father is paternal, the mother does motherly things, and the children do their filial duties; not one knows the experience of the other. Their relationships with each other are impersonal. In my research in self-disclosure, I found many instances where the members of a family were completely ignorant of one another’s hopes and fears, likes and dislikes, problems and joys. They simply did not discuss “personal” things among themselves. The experience of feeling at a standstill in one’s relationships with friends, where the relationship does not seem to be “going anywhere,” is likewise common. “Where” can a relationship with another person “go” anyway? It is in the intimacy of personal relationships that an individual’s upbringing receives its most rigorous test. The ability to stay in growing relationships with a few others, in which a way as to continuously raise the level of each other’s existence, is what a healthy personality is about. When a healthy personal relationship exists, the two people communicate authentically with one another and stay in touch with each other’s perspectives. Their demands and claims upon one another are reasonable. They are actively concerned with one another’s growth and happiness. Each treasures the freedom of the other to be himself or herself and does not try to control the other. #RandolphHarris 15 of 22

No relationship begins this way, neither within the family, nor outside it. People make contact with each other as persons in many ways—through sheer physical nearness, as at home; through shared hobbies and interests; and through accidental meeting. According to one investigator, the first four minutes of any acquaintance are decisive for the fate of that relationship—whether it will move in the direction of greater intimacy or will remain distant and superficial. Once people have met, however, a period of mutual exploration begins. The desire to know the other as that person is, rather than seems to be, motivates the mutual “interviewing” that goes on between persons. Getting to know one another is like unveiling a mystery that may, in the future, bind the two people in friendship, or it may serve to terminate the acquaintance. Scientific knowledge can be extended indefinitely, but it will not be able to do more than help body and, to lesser extent, mind: salvation it cannot give us. Those intellectuals who limited themselves only to the knowledge of present-day science and to the methods of present-day research have only themselves to blame for the world-wide menace of self-destruction at which they know shudder. It is commonly assumed that there is some sort of legislation which gives psychoanalysts the irrevocable right to define a curse. This is not so. Even if there were such legislation, they would be in a difficult position, because their definitions (which are almost synonymous with the termination of treatment) are not clearly stated or unanimously accepted among themselves. #RandolphHarris 16 of 22

Their criteria can usually be boiled down to a pragmatic statement which applies equally well to those therapies which are not psychoanalysis: exempli gratia, “The patient is cured when he is symptom-free and can work and love effectively.” Script analysis can accomplish that at least as frequently as psychoanalysis can. Script theory is one of the most elegant and far‑reaching ideas in modern psychology. At its core, it explains how a human life becomes patterned — how early experiences, emotional conclusions, and unconscious decisions form a story that a person continues to reenact, often without realizing it. Script theory proposes that every person develops a life script: a semi‑conscious plan for how they will behave, relate, succeed, fail, love, suffer, and ultimately make sense of their existence. This script is not written in words but in experiences, especially early ones. The child interprets their environment and makes proto‑decisions about how life works. These decisions harden into a script. A script is the grammar of a person’s emotional life. Script theory is powerful because it links individual psychology with social history. A person’s script is not created in isolation; it is formed within a cultural, familial, and historical context. This is why your earlier line — a theory of neurosis must embrace a theory of history — is exactly right. Scripts are personal, but they are also historical artifacts. To further highlight this illustration, Dr. Freud’s father’s motto was: “Something will turn up,” and that was a precept Dr. Freud devoutly believed in, as his letters show. #RandolphHarris 17 of 22

And in the City of Sacramento, something does always turn up. Sacramento was still half‑asleep when the call came in—one of those raw, predawn hours when the city feels suspended between night and morning. But inside Station 4, the firefighters were already moving. Sacramento Fire is one of the busiest departments in the nation, and its crews live in a constant state of readiness. Calm is never trusted; quiet is never assumed. It is only the breath before the next emergency. At 3:58 a.m., the alarm shattered that breath. “Multiple reports of fire—possible arson. Occupants trapped.” Captain Lukas Reinhardt was on his feet before the second tone sounded. Tall, disciplined, and steady as steel, he had led his crews through infernos that would have broken lesser departments. He pulled on his coat, snapped his helmet into place, and climbed into Engine 4 as the doors thundered open. The streets were empty, washed in the pale glow of streetlights. But ahead—just beyond the downtown corridor—a violent orange pulse rose into the sky. “God,” Captain Reinhardt muttered. “It’s already running.” When they arrived, the building looked like a torch jammed between two aging storefronts. Flames punched through the windows, roaring upward in sheets. Smoke rolled across the street in thick, suffocating waves. Neighbors stood outside in panic, shouting that people were still inside. Captain Reinhardt did not hesitate. “Lines to the front! Ladder to the Bravo side! Move!” His crew surged forward, each motion sharp and practiced. Sacramento firefighters earn their reputation through sheer volume—fires, medical calls, rescues, disasters. They do not waste seconds. They do not wait for certainty. They act. #RandolphHarris 18 of 22

Inside, the heat was brutal. The hallway was already collapsing, flames chewing through the old wooden frame. Reinhardt led the advance, sweeping each room, calling out over the roar. On the second floor, they found her—a woman curled near a window, barely conscious, coughing violently. “Got one!” Captain Reinhardt shouted. The rescue was punishing. The ceiling groaned overhead, threatening to drop. Smoke clawed at their lungs. But they shielded her, carried her down the stairs, and burst out into the cold morning air. Waiting outside were Sacramento’s world‑renowned paramedics—the elite medical teams known across the region for their speed, precision, and impossible saves. Paramedic Jonas Keller took the woman instantly, assessing her airway while Anika Brandt prepared oxygen. Their movements were fluid, almost choreographed, the product of thousands of high‑pressure calls. “She’s viable,” Keller said. “Let’s move.” As the paramedics rushed her toward the ambulance, Reinhardt turned back to the fire. The building was still raging, and the flames were spreading toward the roofline. His crew re‑entered, attacking the blaze with relentless force. Water hammered the flames, steam exploding upward. The fire fought back, but Sacramento Fire fought harder. By the time the sun began to rise, the fire was contained. The building was damaged but standing. The neighboring structures were untouched. Police officers approached Captain Reinhardt with grim expressions. “Captain, we’ve got the landlord in custody. He tried to burn the place down for insurance. We caught him wearing a wig and makeup as he set out in his car from the scene. An officer pulled him over for a broken taillight, only to find firebombs in his car. He was promptly arrested.” Captain Reinhardt stared at the smoldering building, jaw tight. “He didn’t count on us.” The officers nodded. “No. He didn’t.” As the engines finally rolled back toward the station, Captain Reinhardt looked out the window at the waking city. Sacramento Fire had once again stopped a disaster from becoming a tragedy. And the world‑renowned paramedics had turned a near‑fatal rescue into a second chance at life. In one of the busiest fire departments in the nation, heroism is not an event. It is the rhythm of every dawn. #RandolphHarris 19 of 22

When it comes to firefighting, every incident carries the potential for injury—no matter how small the fire appears or how routine the call may seem. If you see a fire engine stopped in the street without its lights on, use extreme caution. Crews may be working nearby, and passing the apparatus can put them in danger. It is often safer to turn around and take another route; if you strike a firefighter or civilian and cause a fatality, you could face charges such as manslaughter. Firefighters frequently move around their vehicle on foot, loading equipment or preparing to leave the scene. Attempting to pass the apparatus can result in a collision with someone you cannot see. Pay close attention to their hand signals as well—emergency vehicles sometimes move slowly or reposition, and impatient drivers trying to slip around them create hazardous situations. If you are already in an intersection when you notice an emergency vehicle approaching, continue through it, then pull to the right and stop as soon as it is safe. Always obey directions from law enforcement officers or firefighters, even if those instructions conflict with posted signs or traffic laws. When sirens or flashing lights are activated, it is illegal to follow within 300 feet of a fire engine, ambulance, or police vehicle. Driving to the scene of a fire, collision, or disaster can also result in arrest, as doing so interferes with firefighters, paramedics, and other emergency personnel. Professional courage is not limited to physical toughness. It includes listening to others, advocating for them in difficult situations, understanding personal limits, and having the integrity to tell a superior when they are wrong. The deeper truth is that public safety depends not only on the bravery of first responders but on the discipline and judgment of the community around them. Every driver’s decision—whether cautious or careless—can either protect or endanger the people risking their lives to protect everyone else. #RandolphHarris 20 of 22

To help prevent disasters, we must plan well in advance. Efforts to preserve farmland and maintain buildable land for future generations often lead to discussions about population growth and long‑term planning. Some people argue that immigration levels should be managed carefully to ensure that infrastructure, housing, and land use remain sustainable. Others suggest that, when immigration does occur, programs that encourage broad representation can help communities reflect the diversity of the wider world. When Americans purchase goods made in the United States, it strengthens local businesses and signals to investors that these products are in demand. Strong sales give investors confidence to reinvest in domestic companies, helping keep jobs, production, and wages within the country. As businesses grow, they contribute more to the tax base, which can reduce the burden on taxpayers over time. Supporting American businesses also keeps more money circulating within the national economy. The government increases the national debt when it spends more than it collects in tax revenue or borrows from private or foreign lenders. When people shop locally, more tax revenue stays in the community and supports public services. This helps keep jobs in the United States and increases the tax contributions that fund government operations. Purchasing foreign-made goods, by contrast, often sends money overseas and may benefit companies that operate under lighter tax or environmental regulations. Buying American-made products can also reduce environmental impact because they travel shorter distances and are produced under stricter standards for air, land, and water protection. In this way, consumer choices influence not only the economy but also environmental stewardship and long-term national sustainability. #RandolphHarris 21 of 22

Under President Trump’s administration, he has made America a priority. President Trump has hermetically sealed the southern border, illegal crossings have been terminated, and are 90 percent lower than under the previous administration. Since President Trump’s crack down on crime, violent crimes in Washington D.C. have dropped by approximately 80 percent. He has stopped thousands of pounds of drugs from entering America and killing citizens. And since President Trump took office, investments in America have increased by trillions of dollars in U.S.A. manufacturing, production, and innovation. As you can see, President Donald Trump and his pledge to “Make America Great Again” is exactly what America needs to save the country and the American people. And yes, diversity is important, so you can see why it is also important to preserve blonde hair and blue eyes, as the people with these characteristics are becoming a minority in America. As a reminder, parents, please teach your children to love America and be patriotic citizens, and to buy goods and services made in America. It is also important to respect law and order and treat your elders with respect. It is inborn in the human mind to wish to know. If this begins with the endless surface questions of a child’s curiosity, if it continues into deeper questions of a scientist’s probing investigation, it cannot and does not stop there. For the higher part of the mind will eventually come into unfoldment, that union of abstract reflective thought with mystical intuition, which is true intelligence, which needs and sees a view of the whole of things. And so, the knowing faculty enters the realm of philosophy. A lot of children are having problems in school and cannot even write a paragraph because they are not reading their books. When you actually read books, you get an example of how to write and will become a better student. Therefore, remember to take your education seriously so that you will be successful in life and make your family proud. Also, to make sure they have all the resources required, please donate to the Sacramento Fire Department to help improve our national security. “Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand between their loved home and the war’s desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause is just, and this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’ And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Thank you for your attention to this matter. PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP. #RandolphHarris 22 of 22

A House That Grew With America: An Invitation to the Winchester Estate

Mrs. Sarah Winchester’s lifetime stretched across one of the most transformative arcs in American history. Born in 1839, she entered a country still young, still fragile, still defining itself. By the time she passed in 1922, the United States of America had endured civil war, embraced industrialization, expanded westward, and stepped onto the world stage as a modern power. Her life overlapped with twenty‑one presidents, each steering the nation through conflict, innovation, and reinvention. She witnessed the Emancipation Proclamation, the long march toward civil rights, and the thunderous arrival of World War I — a conflict that signaled America’s emergence as a global force.

The world around her was changing at a pace no generation had ever seen. She lived through the invention of the lightbulb, the telephone, the gasoline automobile, and even the humble safety pin — small objects that quietly reshaped daily life. She saw women gain the right to vote in 1920, a milestone that arrived just two years before her death. She watched the completion of the transcontinental railroad, a feat that stitched the nation together and accelerated the westward expansion that eventually brought her to California. And in 1886, she witnessed the arrival of the Statue of Liberty, a new symbol of hope rising in New York Harbor.

While the nation grew upward, outward, and ever more ambitious, Mrs. Sarah Winchester built a world of her own — a sprawling, evolving mansion that mirrored the restless creativity of the era. The Winchester Mystery House once boasted towers that rose proudly above the orchards and farmland of the Santa Clara Valley. The most famous was the nine‑story tower, a surreal architectural gesture that seemed to defy both convention and gravity. It stood as a beacon of her imagination, a vertical statement in a world racing toward modernity.

But on April 18, 1906, the great earthquake struck — a violent, city‑shattering convulsion that toppled buildings across San Francisco and the surrounding region. At the Winchester estate, the quake brought down the nine‑story tower and destroyed much of the fourth floor. In the aftermath, Mrs. Sarah made a defining choice: she did not rebuild upward. Instead, she turned her attention to the back of the house, expanding outward in a labyrinth of rooms, staircases, and curiosities. The rise and fall of her tower became a symbol of resilience — a reminder that even in destruction, creation continues.

Through all of this, Mrs. Sarah Winchester’s life remained intertwined with the story of America itself. As the nation celebrated milestones, endured tragedies, and reinvented its identity, she crafted a home that reflected the same spirit of experimentation and transformation. Today, as America marks its 250th birthday, her mansion stands as a testament not only to her ingenuity but to the era she lived through — an era defined by invention, upheaval, ambition, and the relentless forward motion of a country finding its place in the world.

Today, the Winchester Mystery House remains one of America’s most extraordinary landmarks — a place of beauty, curiosity, and quiet grandeur. Its shifting colors, its changing architecture, and its storied past only deepen its charm. Every visit reveals something new; every corner holds a piece of history.

You are cordially invited to tour the Grand Winchester Estate — a place where America’s past still whispers through every hallway. https://winchestermysteryhouse.com/

Repression and Role: Psychic Conflict in Middle‑Class Culture

Everyone carries a story, but not all stories begin on equal ground. Some people occupy the positions they do because they were pushed into them as children, shaped by circumstances they never chose. Others were born into privilege and used it as a foundation for achievement, while some worked relentlessly to build their own success from nothing. And then some inherited every advantage yet squandered it through carelessness or complacency. These contrasts reveal how uneven the landscape of opportunity truly is. There is a patient named Arnold who recently went A.W.O.L. from the hospital after failing to return from an authorized pass. For a while, a measure of faint hope was entertained that he might be able to get along with freedom to walk about the grounds. He had been in and out of the hospital for seven years, spending most of his time on a closed ward with delusional and dilapidated schizophrenes. Struck by the man’s friendliness and his frankness to admit himself in the wrong, his physician, despite the usual rules of dealing with such behavior, made an exception of this case, restoring his ground parole time after time when it was lost by failure to adjust. The experiment had been more or less innocent since the patient did little harm to himself or others beyond chasing a few bad checks for small amounts, cheating unsuccessfully in dice games, stealing a bicycle for which he had no use, behaving uproariously after a few drinks, and getting into jail, whence he was brought back each time safe and apparently repentant. #RandolphHarris 1 of 22

An effort was made to see if this rational and intelligent man, even though he failed seven times, seventy times, and seven times seventy times, might at last achieve a positive reaction to indefatigable forgiveness and succeed in finding some way to exist without supervision as incessant as that required by a traditional madman. Little or no hope was held that he might leave the hospital and live as a normal man; but something would have been gained if, still sheltered in a psychiatric hospital, he could enjoy the freedom of the grounds and, on occasion, pass into town. During those seven years of psychiatric study and observation, he had never shown any sign technically regarded as indicating a psychosis. That is to say, he was always entirely rational in conversation, alert, above average in intelligence by psychometric tests, free from delusions and hallucinations, and had not shown the slightest evidence of “deterioration.” Nor had he ever shown retardation, a true depression of the cyclothymic type, increased psychomotor activity, flight of ideas, or any other condition which it is permissible to class as psychosis. He had been free also from any symptoms characteristic of a psychoneurosis. During his long and frequent periods within closed wards, he was superficially agreeable to his physicians most of the time but extremely fretful about his confinement. He spoke eloquently of having learned his lesson and always pressed his request for parole or discharge with good logic. #RandolphHarris 2 of 22

Once, after making an especially convincing plea for freedom and with the possibility of parole within the next few days, he succeeded during the night in obtaining whiskey by lowering on a cord an empty Coca-Cola bottle which he had obtained and which some confederate filled for him. He, at once, proceeded to get rather high in the dead of night to the great astonishment of the attendants, who had regarded him as a “sane” man but who were now at a loss to understand his senseless guffaws, sudden maudlin outcries, and impulsive lurches about the ward. Not realizing that he could possibly have obtained liquor, they feared for a moment that he must have developed an ordinary psychosis. On being approached, he cursed, sobbed feebly, and was brought back to bed, passing intestinal gas with frequent loud and unpleasant effects, grinning almost triumphantly at the nurse who had hurried to him at each detonation. The next morning, he admitted the drinking after being confronted with the Coca-Cola bottle to which the string was still attached. He was at first superficially penitent but soon could be seen to show pleasure at his cleverness, which he seemed to feel afforded just cause for a bit of gloating. He seemed to have no deep sense of regret and could not understand why the episode delayed his parole. He became, indeed, definitely vexed and talked incessantly for a day or two about his failure to get a square deal. This patient, entirely sane by orthodox psychiatric standards, having spent the better part of seven years closely confined among other men who, to him as to any layman, were unmistakable lunatics and nowise agreeable company, was given another series of chances to win his freedom. #RandolphHarris 3 of 22

If he could be put in a controlled situation and allowed to feel the unpleasant consequences of his mistakes or misdeeds regularly, as he commits them, the opinion has often been expressed that the psychopath, who in some ways seems to behave like a badly spoiled child, might be helped. With this patient, such a policy was pursued, and the effort was protracted to remarkable lengths. Such a plan of treatment or reeducation, perhaps, may accomplish a good deal with some patients of this type. With Arnold, it yielded no discernible fruits. His parole was restored time after time. He expressed a clear understanding that he was obligated not to leave the hospital grounds. Each time, in accordance with his past behavior, he would promptly disappear. After a few hours, several days, or perhaps a week, the police would call to say they had him in custody. Back on his ward, he seemed properly regretful and immediately expressed confidence in himself, explaining that the last misadventure had served as the lesson he needed. He was soon allowed to go out on the grounds again. Two or three small acts of defrauding, the temporary misappropriation of an automobile (which he would usually abandon after his whim for a ride had been fulfilled), or some other succession of deeds incompatible with parole status always brought him back under strict supervision. After a short time, he was given still another trial. #RandolphHarris 4 of 22

He spoke fulsomely of the handsome treatment he was receiving, protested an earnest affection for his physician, and swore staunchly that he would justify this faith shown in him. Always, he seemed entirely sure that his difficulties were a thing of the past. Unlike the patient whose behavior is distorted by compulsion in the ordinary sense, he showed no evidence of a struggle, no awareness of anything that gave him doubt about his future success in achieving what he planned. This alert, intelligent man remained always free from confusion, from any indication of powerful impulses or yearnings, from all conscious influences that might account for his spectacular failure to gain freedom. He expressed eloquently very natural desires to live an unrestricted life outside his familiar wards where he was locked in with very psychotic men. He mentioned no force or conflict, in many long interviews, that might make it difficult for him to conduct himself in a way that would bring him release from hospitalization. He denied experiencing the slightest pleasure from alcoholic beverages. And, indeed, he always seemed miserable, melancholy, and quite unlike his usual buoyant self when he had partaken of drink. He did sometimes, as a matter of fact, continue ten days or two weeks without mishap. At his own request, he was detailed to help the attendants on the infirmary ward, which he did ably, faithfully, and apparently with interest. A merry, rather witty person, he freely admitted that he had made a fool of himself and a mess of his life, but always maintained that he would never again break his word, which he had given not to drink, not to stay out beyond the limits of a pass, and not to violate any other hospital regulations. He was usually friendly and courteous to his physician and to other personnel and went out of his way to be attentive to physically ill patients, apparently taking mild pleasure in any kindness he could do to them. #RandolphHarris 5 of 22

One Sunday morning, he was given a pass after he had made a special request that he wanted to attend church. Some of the hospital attendants on their way home that night found him several miles out in the country, staggering about in the rain on a lonely road, his trousers hanging down about his heels, seriously impeding his progress and tripping him from time to time into the ditch where he rolled and thrashed, hallooing wildly or cursing in aimless violence. Soaking wet, covered with mud and vomitus, he was brought back to the hospital. The next morning, he faced his physician and said that he had learned his lesson. Within a week, parole was restored, and shortly thereafter, he celebrated his freedom by somehow obtaining whisky without leaving the grounds and was hobbling into the recreation building, where a dance was in progress, a picture of agitated dejection. He stumbled about purposeless lunges, eyes rolling, mouth open and drooling saliva, then collapsed senstationally on the floor before attendants could seize him. These episodes are entirely typical of his last few months in the hospital. During this time, a limited degree of freedom was restored to him within a few days after each episode and each time he failed as promptly and spectacularly as in the incidents previously described. Altogether, he was arrested some dozen or more times during this short period, nearly always within a few hours after leaving the hospital grounds. He had frequent, superficially serious talks with his physician in which he expressed despair over his situation, remorse for his all but incredible record as a failure, and a quick, cheerful confidence in his future. What might be called a thin and bright surface of sincerity, which is hard to indicate without paradox, seemed to distinguish him from his fellows. This quality, not in the simplest sense false, seemed not only consistent but almost complete. It was, however, too bodiless to hold any true resolution or remorse or to be useful to him in gaining worthwhile insight. #RandolphHarris 6 of 22

One got the impression that his sincerity, though not a literal fraud, was so thin as to be, for practical purposes, merely an academic abstraction. He was often in high spirits, communicative, boyish, and rather winning. Though fretting and complaining continually about his confinement and apparently unable to understand adequately why this was advisable, he seemed to find mild interest and trivial pleasure in small matters. He could give to explanation of why he committed acts that demanded his remaining in a psychiatric hospital. He always fell back on the plea that he would never do so again. When drinking, he was often noisy, always unhappy and distraught, silly, and tearful. His physician’s enthusiasm to rehabilitate him by a siege of patience slowly waned as failures accumulated. Finally on Easter Sunday, he engagingly made another plea for a bit of freedom. If he could only have a pass for a few hours, to go to church for Easter services! His request was granted. Marvelously, he returned on time, without indication of having sought disaster, and exultant at his success. On the strength of this performance, he was allowed to remain out in the sunshine on the grounds during the afternoon. At nightfall, he could not be found. All this, however, is but the merest glimpse of the man. Seven years ago, when admitted for the first time, he had already spent some ten or twelve years in and out of jails, and mental hospitals, scarcely ever passing a week of his life without attention from the police. Small swindles, giving, as collateral for a loan, property owned by another, bad checks, wrecking an automobile which he had bought on credit and for which he made no effort to pay, surreptitiously selling half a dozen of his uncle’s cows and blowing the cash, in these and scores of other but similar activities, he kept the local law enforcement agencies extended. He seemed always so frank and honest, so thoroughly without malice, that often those damaged by him withdraw their charges to give him another chance. #RandolphHarris 7 of 22

Sometimes, by pleading grave illness or other disaster and emergency in the family, he would, in his father’s name, borrow $1,200 or $2,500 which he squandered before the misrepresentation was detected. Once, feeling himself in need of funds to make a trip, he rented to a stranger rooms in the house of a neighbor, cleverly timing his transaction so he could show the accommodations, close the deal, and obtain payment in advance during a period when the lady owning the property was downtown shopping. The money he obtained and promptly wasted was seldom, if ever, sought for any appreciable need or to satisfy impulses that seemed more than mild and transient caprice. The frequent trips he made were all but purposeless. Whether he went to a nearby town or a large, distant city, he sought no job or other opportunity, found no adventure in the ordinary meaning of the word. He often hung about street corners, went to a movie, loitered in a park, spent hours in a pool room or affordable hotel lobby chatting about trivialities, and then, finding his environment tedious, he would return home. Meanwhile, his parents, whom he never informed of plans for travel, suffered no little anxiety and grief, wondering whether he was dead or alive and if they might see him again. He did not write to his family while on these expeditions. If jailed for pawning a tire he had stolen from someone’s car, pressured too unpleasantly for bills he had run up, faced with trial for fraud (after selling nonexistent commodities for which he successfully misrepresented himself as a s salesman), et cetera, he usually telephoned his parents and spoke convincingly of the ill fortune which had overtaken him and his innocence of willful wrongdoing. They regularly sped to his aid and, usually, with appreciable expense to themselves and with humiliation, succeeded in obtaining his release. Otherwise, he simply turned up one fine day, nonchalant, gracious in his apologies, but apparently unaware of having caused any valid distress to those he always maintained he dearly and deeply loved. #RandolphHarris 8 of

On turning to drink, he sought low company and often ended by wandering off. Sometimes days passed before he was discovered lying in forlorn swamps, wallowing drunkenly about remote cornfields. Not dozens of times but scores of times, his friends and relatives had to search him out and bring him, inert or struggling farcically to no end, back home, where he was washed, reclothed, and nursed to sobriety. He had done no work at all since a brief gesture of helping his father in the store for a few months after he quit junior college in the town of his nativity at seventeen years of age. He had no real friends and seemed to want none, though he was superficially sociable and mingled easily with both genders. He had frequently sought the favors of women of the evening, but had never shown a lasting or whole-hearted interest in any woman. So, he was presented to the hospital seven years previously: twenty-eight years old, below average height, overnourished, a quick-witted man, admitting many faults, acknowledging his human frailty, debonair but not pretentious, a close-cropped black moustache on his lip, a rather engaging, shy, swift light of merriment slipping at times into his glance. During the seven years that he was under observation, no delusion was ever noted, nor any other sign even remotely suggestive of a mental disease that is accepted as such. He has never even experienced temporary hallucinations while under the influence of alcohol. He has undergone no disintegration of personality (as this is ordinarily understood), none at least that is discernible on prolonged observation, by psychiatric examination, or by any other means available. He is today, plainly the same man that we first knew and who, according to all accounts, has been a problem to his community for years. #RandolphHarris 9 of 22

After his first admission, he was carefully examined; social service reports were secured, and he was observed day after day. No evidence of any condition officially known as “psychosis” could be found. He was granted parole privileges, with results that need not be described again. Time after time, he was sequestered on closed wards, naturally among patients whose psychoses showed typical manifestations, and among them, he stood out in arresting incongruity. Restored to parole, he regularly showed himself incompetent and was returned to constant supervision. On the request of his relatives, he was allowed to go home with the on-trial-visit status, where, knowing that a failure to behave himself would mean returning to the confinement he naturally detested, he at once engaged in not one but several activities, each of which made his return to the restrictions of a hospital not only necessary but urgent. Wearying of his life behind locked doors among classically demented men, on several occasions, he demanded his discharge. On being brought before the medical staff, he was found obviously “sane” and released. Soon, however, his relatives were back with him, bearing tales of such mad folly as few, if any, people deranged in other ways could produce. Readmitted to confinement inappropriate to his plain sanity by the accepted criteria of mental disease, he soon became restless and, pointing out his legal status, left against medical advice. Worn out by incessant traffic with the police on his behalf, diverted from the customary uses of life by night-long searches for him in lonely hinterlands, or in distant jails, his relatives finally succeeded in having him legally committed to the custody of the hospital as an “insane” person. #RandolphHarris 10 of 22

There is little doubt that the personal influences and well-known political mechanisms of a rustic Southern community had weight with the courts, not to speak of common sense unversed in technical psychiatry but painfully aware of irrational conduct so long flagrantly demonstrated. After a month or more of confinement under these circumstances, the patient demanded an interview with the staff. With admirable logic, he maintained that he suffered from no mental derangement whatsoever. He lucidly described the recognized signs of mental disorder, made light and clever jokes about the impropriety of applying such criteria to him, and pointed out the absurdity of identifying him with the usual patient kept in such a hospital. Admitting his maladjustment and his inveterate but minor deeds of depravity, he insisted that he be left to ordinary legal measures in any future misconduct, which he did not deny was possible. The staff, as conscientious psychiatrists, could not do otherwise than agree that he was “sane and competent” and release him. Three weeks later, he was brought back to the hospital at midnight by a brother and a cousin. He had a fractured clavicle (memoir of his frequent brawls with local police), was lachrymose, penitent, and all but homesick for his ward in the hospital. The physician on duty hesitated about readmitting him. His story was well known. His relatives thereupon threatened to telegraph high officers in the government. They were by no means assuaged at being told that the hospital was not maintained for the treatment of persons judged sane by the canons of psychiatry and considered responsible for their misconduct and misfortunes. #RandolphHarris 11 of 22

After consultation with the attending physicians, Arnold was cleared for return and subsequently readmitted to the hospital. Some weeks later, he called in local lawyers who, invoking the writ of habeas corpus, arranged a lunacy trial by jury. Of course, there could be but one verdict. The man was plainly “in his right mind.” No acceptable evidence of mental disease (as officially defined) could be brought out. He was taken out of the hospital’s custody by external authorities. A month afterward, chastened and nostalgic for the familiar ward that now seemed preferable to the threat of jail, Arnold willingly returned, escorted by relatives whose tale of misfortune need not be repeated here. His story, however particular, illustrates a larger psychological truth. There is one word which, if we understand it, becomes the key to Dr. Freud’s entire system: repression. Freud devoted his life to studying this phenomenon, and the Freudian revolution consists in recognizing repression as the hidden engine of both individual behavior and social order. In this perspective, society is built upon the repression of the individual, and the individual is shaped by the repression he carries within himself. Arnold’s flight and return can be read not merely as an episode of misconduct, but as a small enactment of this deeper drama—an oscillation between the pressures imposed from without and the conflicts that surge from within. The best way to explore the notion of repression is to review the path which led Dr. Freud to his hypothesis. Dr. Freud’s breakthrough was the discovery of meaningfulness in a set of phenomena theretofore regarded, at least in scientific circles, as meaningless: first, the “mad” symptoms of the mentally deranged; second, dreams; and third, the various phenomena gathered together under the title of the psychopathology of everyday life, including slips of the tongue, errors, and random thoughts. #RandolphHarris 12 of 22

Now, in what sense does Dr. Freud find meaningless in neurotic symptoms, dreams, and errors? He means, of course, that these phenomena are determined and can be given a causal explanation. He is rigorously insisting on unequivocal allegiance to the principle of psychic determinism; but he means much more than that. For if it were possible to explain these phenomena on behavioristic principles, as the result of superficial associations of ideas, then they would have a cause but no meaning. Meaningfulness means expression of a purpose or an intention. The crux of Dr. Freud’s discovery is that neurotic symptoms, as well as the dreams and errors of everyday life, do have meaning, and that the meaning of “meaning” has to be radically revised because they have meaning. Since the purport of these purposive expressions is generally unknown to the person whose purpose they express, Dr. Freud is driven to embrace the paradox that there are in a human being purposes of which he knows nothing, involuntary purposes, or, in more technical Freudian language, “unconscious ideas.” From this point of view, a new world of psychic reality is opened up, of whose inner nature we are every bit as ignorant as we are of the reality of the external world, and of which our ordinary conscious observation tells us no more than our sense organs are able to report to us of the external world. Dr. Freud can thus define psychoanalysis as “nothing more than the discovery of the unconscious in mental life.” However, the Freudian revolution extends far beyond the claim that human beings possess an unconscious psychic life alongside their conscious one. The other crucial hypothesis is that some unconscious ideas in a human being are incapable of becoming conscious to him in the ordinary way, because they are strenuously disowned and resisted by the conscious self. From this point of view, Dr. Freud can say that “the whole of psychoanalytic theory is in fact built up on the perception of the resistance exerted by the patient when we try to make him conscious of his unconscious.” The dynamic relation between the unconscious and the conscious life is one of conflict, and psychoanalysis is, from top to bottom, a science of mental conflict. #RandolphHarris 13 of 22

The realm of the unconscious is established in the individual when he refuses to admit into his conscious life a purpose or desire which he has, and in doing so establishes in himself a psychic force opposed to his own idea. This rejection by the individual of a purpose or idea, which nevertheless remains his, is repression. “The essence of repression lies simply in the function of rejecting or keeping something out of consciousness.” Stated in more general terms, the essence of repression lies in the refusal of the human being to recognize the realities of his human nature. The fact that the repressed purposes nevertheless remain his is shown by dreams and neurotic symptoms, which represent an irruption of the unconscious into consciousness, but a compromise between the two conflicting systems, and thus exhibiting the reality of the conflict. Thus, the notion of the unconscious remains an enigma without the theory of repression; or, as Dr. Freud says, “We obtain our theory of the unconscious from the theory of repression.” Repression is the keyword in the whole system; the word is chosen to indicate a structure dynamically based on psychic conflict. Dr. Freud illustrates the nature of psychic repression by a series of metaphors and analogies drawn from the social phenomena of war, civil war, and police action. From neurotic symptoms, dreams, and errors to a general theory of human nature may seem like a long step. Granting that it is a long step, Dr. Freud could argue that he is entitled to explore the widest possible application of a hypothesis derived from a narrow field. He could take the offensive and claim that traditional theories of human nature must be regarded as unsatisfactory because they have nothing to say about these peripheral phenomena. What theory of human nature, except Dr. Freud’s, does have anything significant to say about dreams or insanity? And are dreams and insanity really negligible factors on the periphery of human life? #RandolphHarris 14 of 22

However, the truth of the matter is that Dr. Freud maintains that to go from neurotic symptoms, dreams, and errors, to a new theory of human nature in general involves no further step at all. For the evidence on which the hypothesis of the repressed unconscious is based entails the conclusion that it is a phenomenon present in all human beings. The psychopathological phenomena of everyday life, although trivial from a practical point of view, are theoretically important because they show the intrusion of unconscious intentions into our everyday and supposedly normal behavior. Even more theoretically important are dreams. For dreams, also “normal” phenomena, exhibit in detail not only the existence of the unconscious but also the dynamics of its repression (the dream-censorship). However, since the same dynamics of repression explained neurotic symptoms, and since the dreams of neurotics, which are a clue to the meaning of their symptoms, differ neither in structure nor in content from the dreams of normal people, the conclusion is that a dream is itself a neurotic symptom. We are all, therefore, neurotic. At least dreams show that the difference between neurosis and health prevails only by day; and since the psychopathology of everyday life exhibits the same dynamics, even the waking life of the “healthy” man is pervaded by innumerable symptom-formations. Between “normality” and “abnormality,” there is no qualitative difference but only a quantitative difference, based largely on the practical question of whether our neurosis is serious enough to incapacitate us for work. #RandolphHarris 15 of 22

Or perhaps, we are closer to the Freudian point of view if we give a more paradoxical formulation; the difference between “neurotic” and “healthy” is only that the “healthy: have a socially usual form of neurosis. At any rate, to quote a more technical and conscious formulation of the same theorem, Dr. Freud says that from the study of dreams, we learn that the neuroses make use of mechanisms already in existence as a normal part of our psychic structure, not of one that is newly created by some morbid disturbance or other. Thus, Dr. Freud’s first paradox, the existence of a repressed unconscious, necessarily implies the second and even more significant paradox, the universal neurosis of mankind. Here is the pons asinorum of psychoanalysis. Neurosis is not an occasional aberration; it is not just in other people; it is in us, and in us all the time. It is in the psychoanalyst: Dr. Freud discovered the Oedipus complex, which he regarded as the root of all neurosis, through self-analysis. The Interpretation of Dreams is one of the great applications and extensions of the Socratic maxim, “Know thyself.” Or, to put it another way, the doctrine of the universal neurosis of mankind is the psychoanalytical analogue of the theological doctrine of original sin. The crucial point in Dr. Freud’s basic hypothesis is the existence of psychic conflict, a conflict that cannot be understood without clarifying the nature of the opposing forces. Freud analyzed this conflict repeatedly, from various angles and at different levels of psychic organization. In my own work, I have been examining how this same dynamic appears in social life: how rigidly imposed roles, and the demand to conform to them, generate the kinds of chronic strain that lead to both psychological and physical breakdown among middle‑class individuals. #RandolphHarris 16 of 22

If the hypothesis is sound, then it means persons can do much to foster their own health by examining the ways in which they are living out their various social roles. One piece of existential research anyone can carry out is to itemize the various roles that he is committed to and then do a self-rating as to the degree of enlivenment felt in each role (in relation to the others with whom the person regularly deals while in that role—for example, son to mother, son to father, employee to boss, colleague to colleague, husband to wife, and so on). Thus, I could list the following roles for myself: husband; father to each of three sons; son of my mother; brother to each of five siblings; friend to each of several people that I see regularly; and so on. I could compare how alive I feel in each of these relationships; how authentic I can be in each; how free I feel to disclose myself in each relationship. Moreover, I could try to alter my ways in each role that I found oppressive. Ask yourself, “Can I be flexible and create new roles or adapt to new roles when necessary?” I have found that when I am serving as someone’s psychotherapist, I spend a great deal of time exploring the patient’s ways of being in roles, in the quest for more authentic and vitalizing ways. Certainly, a person can, with a bit of imagination, begin to experiment with more life-giving ways of being in age, gender, and assorted family and occupational roles, without waiting to get sick. It is not easy, but it is necessary and possible to redefine one’s roles. If the other person will not confirm one’s changed ways of being in the role, it may be necessary, for one’s well-being, to withdraw from that relationship altogether. However, many, perhaps most, good friends are able to accept health-giving role changes in others—but be prepared for an understandable period of readjustment on their part to the new “you,” the changed role. #RandolphHarris 17 of 22

Around 2007, Sacramento was changing faster than anyone could track. New condos rose along the riverfront, tech companies planted their flags downtown, and developers spoke of “revitalization” with the zeal of missionaries. But in the neighborhoods just beyond the glossy brochures—Oak Terrace, Midtown East, and the aging blocks near Del Paso Boulevard—fires began to break out with unsettling frequency. At first, they seemed like coincidences. An old laundromat with faulty wiring. A shuttered restaurant with a gas leak. A warehouse that had been vacant for years. But as the months passed, the pattern grew impossible to ignore. Buildings burned only after redevelopment proposals stalled. Fires erupted in structures whose owners had refused to sell. And every time the ashes cooled, a new development plan appeared, stamped with the signature of Councilman Everett Hale, a charismatic politician who spoke of “modernizing Sacramento” while quietly clearing the land he needed. What Hale did not anticipate was the vigilance—and the stubborn integrity—of the award‑winning Sacramento Fire Department. On a warm November night in 2015, the fire that would expose everything tore through the Riverside Crest Apartments, a three‑story building home to dozens of working‑class families. Flames shot from the windows before anyone inside realized what was happening. Smoke filled the hallways, alarms shrieked, and terrified residents scrambled for exits that were already blocked. Within minutes, Captain Friedrich Adler and his crew arrived, their engines lighting up the street with red and white flashes. Captain Adler, known for his sharp instincts and unshakable calm, surveyed the inferno with a grim set to his jaw. “We’re going in,” Captain Adler said, already pulling on his mask. #RandolphHarris 18 of 22

His team—Lukas Bauer, Anja Keller, and Matthias Brandt—moved with the precision that had earned the department national recognition. They pushed through the front entrance as burning debris rained from the ceiling. Inside, the heat was suffocating. Lukas Bauer located a group of residents trapped on the second floor and guided them down a smoke‑filled stairwell. Anja Keller crawled beneath the flames to reach a mother and her two children hiding in a bathroom. Matthias Brandt forced open a jammed fire door, clearing a path for half a dozen people who had been cornered by the spreading blaze. Outside, the world‑renowned paramedics—Dr. Helene Weiss and Ari Schumann—set up a triage area. Dr. Weiss treated smoke inhalation with swift, practiced movements, her voice steady as she reassured frightened residents. Ari Schumann moved from patient to patient, stabilizing those in distress with the calm efficiency that had made him a legend in emergency medicine. As the fire raged, Captain Adler noticed something troubling: the burn patterns were too deliberate, the ignition point too precise. This was no accident. When investigators arrived, Captain Adler quietly pointed out the anomalies he had observed. The investigation that followed uncovered the truth: Councilman Hale had been orchestrating the fires, using arson to force evacuations and condemnations so he could acquire properties cheaply for redevelopment. His arrest sent shockwaves through Sacramento. In the aftermath, the Riverside Crest fire became a defining moment in the city’s modern history. Residents spoke with reverence about the night Captain Friedrich Adler and his team refused to let corruption claim more lives. The award‑winning Sacramento Fire Department and the world‑renowned paramedics had not only saved dozens of people from burning buildings—they had exposed the rot beneath Sacramento’s gleaming new façade. And in doing so, they reminded the city that true progress is built not on ashes, but on courage. (Certain names, locations, and circumstances have been modified to safeguard innocent parties and preserve the integrity of active investigations.) #RandolphHarris 19 of 22

Where History, Mystery, and Imagination Intertwine

Step inside one of California’s most extraordinary landmarks and experience a world unlike any other. The Winchester Mystery House is more than a Victorian mansion—it is a living work of art, a labyrinth of architectural wonders, and one of America’s most captivating historical estates. Built over 36 years without pause, the mansion stands today as a testament to craftsmanship, curiosity, and the enduring legend of Mrs. Sarah Winchester.

Visitors are invited to explore miles of elegant hallways, beautifully restored rooms, and the mansion’s famously perplexing features: staircases that lead nowhere, doors that open into walls, windows overlooking other rooms, and secret passages woven throughout the estate. Every corner of the house reflects Sarah Winchester’s unique vision, blending Victorian elegance with an eccentricity that continues to fascinate architects, historians, and guests from around the world.

Beyond its architectural marvels, the Winchester Mystery House offers a rare glimpse into the life of a woman who defied convention. Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune, poured her grief, creativity, and resources into building a home unlike any other. Her story—part tragedy, part triumph, part enduring mystery—adds emotional depth to every room you enter. Visitors leave not only impressed by the mansion’s scale, but moved by the humanity behind its creation.

Forsaking the Good: The Psychological and Spiritual Consequences of Scientific Materialism

The portrayal of a woman who pursues high‑risk intimacy offers a window into the complex interplay between attachment patterns, trauma histories, and the search for agency. Rather than reducing her to a stereotype, a scholarly analysis must consider how risk‑taking can function as coping, rebellion, self‑assertion, or self‑erasure. Her behavior becomes a psychological text, one that reveals more about internal conflict than about moral character. This young woman, sitting now for the first time in my office, gave an impression that vaguely suggested—immaturity? The word is not entirely accurate for the impression. Immaturity might imply the guarded, withdrawn attitude often shown by children in the doctor’s office. It was another, in fact, almost an opposite feeling that she gave. Something less than the average of self-consciousness, a sort of easy security that does not arise from effort or from pretense—some qualities of this nature seemed to enter into the impression. Roberta was just twenty years old, well developed, a little above average weight, perhaps, but not greatly. She was not pretty, but her looks were pleasant. Unlike most young women of twenty, she did not seem, with or without awareness, to be deliberately counting her feminine attractions into the equation that probably occurs in every personal contact between man and woman. This, perhaps, was what gave that first vague and complicated impression of an adult who, in some rather pleasant way, is still childlike. #RandolphHarris 1 of 26

It was a little surprising to hear her admit that she had resented being brought for the interview because she felt her mother and father were overdoing things to try to find something “wrong with her mind.” There was nothing sullen about her, and she soon expressed satisfaction at having come and a willingness to stay in the hospital as long as it might be deemed advisable. She admitted without reluctance that she needed help of some sort and that she had “made a mess” of her life. She expressed interest in plans for a different future. However, her request for psychiatric help did not seem like a trivial matter. According to Roberta’s father, “I can’t understand the girl, no matter how hard I try,” he admitted, shaking his head in genuine perplexity. “It’s not that she seems bad, nor that she consciously intends to do wrong. She can lie with the straightest face, and after she’s found in the most outlandish lies, she still seems perfectly easy in her own mind.” Roberta was known for stealing little knick-knacks from family members, and for repeatedly making off with small articles from the store, and even from her own home. “At first, it seemed just the mischievous doings of a little girl,” he said, “a sort of play—and her not realizing about its being serious. You know how children sometimes tell a lot of fanciful stories without thinking of it as lying.” #RandolphHarriis 2 of 26

Neither the father nor the mother seemed a severe parent. They had no unusual attitudes toward their children. Roberta’s brother and two sisters were all well-behaved members of the community. The family was financially comfortable but not wealthy. There had been no black sheep in the group for several generations, during which they lived in a western North Carolina town of 10,000. “We didn’t want to be too hard on Roberta when we first noticed these things,” the mother continued. “I’ve heard that too much punishment sometimes confuses a child and makes matters worse. We talked it over with Mr. —- (the pastor); with the superintendent of the school, and with all her teachers.” The child was not spoiled. The parents consistently let her find that lying, stealing, and truancy brought censure and punishment. Roberta was known for being wild and headstrong, and often used remarkable ingenuity to conceal her misdeeds and to continue them. As she grew into her teens, this girl began to buy dresses, cosmetics, candy, perfume, and other articles, charging them to her father. He had no warning that these bills would come. Roberta would frequently give the things she had no use for to her friends. Her spending habits were so bad that the family was on the verge of bankruptcy. Although she had an I.Q. of 135, Roberta’s school work was mediocre, and she was frequently truant. #RandolphHarris 3 of 26

Even though Roberta was not a serious student, she expressed ambitious plans for the future. These included the study of medicine, dress designing, becoming an author, and teaching home economics in a nearby college. Roberta experienced no great thrill or consummation in a theft nor found in it relief from uncomfortable stress. She started staying out late, and this behavior alarmed her family. Such conduct, of course, suggests that she might be deliberately trying to hurt her parents. However, if so, Roberta was quite unaware of such a motive. As with her thievery, truancy, and her running up bills, one does not find a conscious drive of real significance. Roberta insists that she loves her parents. “They’ve made some mistakes with me,” she says, “but I’ve made a lot of myself. I appreciate all they’ve done for me. Of course, I’ve learned my lesson now.” Roberta made a favorable impression in Sunday School. However, even while engaged in these activities, she was occasionally stealing and running up big bills which, by many subtleties, she concealed for a long time from her father. “I wouldn’t exactly say she’s like a hypocrite,” the father added. “When she’s caught and confronted with her lies and other misbehavior, she doesn’t seem to appreciate the inconsistency of her position. Her conscience seems still untouched. Even when she says how badly she acted and promises to do better, her feelings just must not be what you take them for.” #RandolphHarris 4 of 26

Having failed in many classes and her truancy becoming intolerable to the school, Roberta, after several more petty thefts from classmates and teachers, was expelled from the local high school. Her family sent her to a boarding school of her choice, from which she wrote enthusiastic letters. Despite this expressed satisfaction, she ran away from school and could not be located for several days. After her return home, it was found that she had cashed bad checks at school to obtain money with which she kept herself at a hotel in a town near the school and not far from her home. She was such a casual liar that none of her friends or their parents suspected that she had run away. Roberta borrowed sums of money from several people during this episode, telling them about all sorts of entirely unreal situations which made it necessary for her to have funds at once. Disturbed by the unusual talks about sexual irregularities in young people, her parents had serious discussions with their daughter when she finally returned home. Privileges were taken from her, and, sometimes for a month or more after an especially gross act of disobedience, she was not allowed to go out with her crowd. Having feared that Roberta would, in such circumstances, lose her virginity, the parents prepared themselves for the worst. She, of course, denied any sexual relations, but she also denied stealing, truancy, surreptitiously charging things to her father, and all her other faulty conduct. #RandolphHarris 5 of 26

When Roberta missed a menstrual period shortly after running away from school, her parents were so perturbed that a medical examination was made. Not only was there no evidence of pregnancy, but a definitely intact hymen was obvious. Roberta was sent to two other boarding schools from which she had to be expelled. She entered a hospital for training to be a registered nurse, but did not last a month. Employed in her father’s business as a bookkeeper, she used her skill at figures and a good deal of ingenuity to embezzle considerable sums. Roberta met scores of young soldiers from a nearby camp. With many of them, she kept up a lively correspondence after they were sent overseas or to other posts. She spoke of satisfaction in sending letters to these men who were serving their country and expressed herself from time to time as being in love with one or another of them. One of those with whom she corresponded most regularly was killed in an accident on the West Coast, and another during combat in Italy. She seemed little affected by these incidents, though her expressions of regret were verbally appropriate. Apparently, she was unaware that under such circumstances, another girl might have felt more. Shortly after, Roberta, with no explanation to her parents, suddenly disappeared. To me, she explained that she had left with the intention of visiting a boyfriend stationed at a camp in another state. #RandolphHarris 6 of 26

Roberta admitted that she had in mind the possibility of marrying this man, but that no definite decision had been made by her, much less by him. She had, it seems, given the matter little serious thought, and from her attitude, one would judge she was moved by little more than what might make a person stroll off into the yard to see if the magnolia tree had bloomed. She left with a little over $55.00 in her purse. When she got off the bus, she was not able to reach the boyfriend by telephone and ask him to cash app (telegraph) her some funds. Balked in her efforts to reach the soldier, she remembered another boy, who lived in this town where she had found herself almost without funds. She decided to go to his family and spend the night with them. They welcomed her with open arms, and there was much pleasant conversation. Before her family could trace her, Roberta slipped off the next norming. Catching a bus bound in another direction, she rode for a few hours and got off at a strange town where she knew no one. Not having concluded plans for her next step, she sat for a while in a hotel lobby. Soon, she was approached by a middle-aged man. He was far from prepossessing, smelt of cheap liquor, and his manners were distinctly distasteful. He soon offered to pay for her overnight accommodations at the hotel. She realized that he meant to share the bed with her but made no objection. Roberta was neither excited, frightened, repulsed, nor attracted by a prospect that more carefully brought up virgins would certainly have regarded with anything but indifference. #RandolphHarris 7 of 26

The man, during their several hours together, handled her in a rough, preremptory fashion, took no trouble to conceal his contempt for her and her role, and made no pretense of friendliness, much less affection. She experienced moderate pain but no sexual response under his ministrations. After giving her $70.00 with unnecessarily contemptuous accentuations of its significance, he left her in the room about midnight. Next morning, she reached her soldier friend by telephone and suggested that he send her sufficient funds to join him. She had not discarded the idea of marrying him, nor had she progressed any further toward a final decision to do so. He discouraged her vigorously against coming, refused to send money, and urged her to return home. She was not, it seems, greatly upset by this turn of events, and, with little serious consideration of the matter, decided to go to Charlotte, which was approximately 150 miles distant. When she reached Charlotte, she had little trouble finding small jobs in restaurants and stores. She supported herself for several days by working, but found her funds barely provided for room and food. She thereupon began to spend the nights with various tipsy soldiers, travelling salesmen, and other men who showed inclinations to pick her up. With all these, she had sexual intercourse. From this, she eventually began to experience a moderate, half-warmed pleasure, but nothing like intense passion. #RandolphHarris 8 of 26

Despite extensive promiscuity since that time, she has never experienced true pleasure nor temptation. Nor has she felt any of the frustration and unrelieved tension so familiar in some women who are aroused but left unsatisfied. Her family, meanwhile, not knowing whether she was dead or alive, was making every effort, through the police and otherwise, to find her. These efforts met with success after about three weeks. On meeting her parents, she expressed affection, running to them and throwing herself in their arms. At their prompting, Roberta found it easy to make use of the formalities indicative of penitence, but seemed remarkably free from actual humiliation or distress. Neither the recent anxiety of her mother and father nor her own social jeopardy overwhelmed or even greatly daunted her. She seemed little vulnerable to the inevitable gossip that, on her return, beat like a tempest about town. As if armored by a sort of innocence, she went her way freely, affable, unembarrassed, the picture of an artless girl fond of others and expecting kindliness from all. During her hospitalization, she spoke convincingly of the benefit she was obtaining and discussed her mistakes with every appearance of insight. She spoke like a person who had been lost and bewildered but now had found her way. She did not seem to be making any voluntary effort to deceive her physicians. #RandolphHarris 9 of 26

Soon after she returned home, reports came, all indicating that she was continuing in her old patterns of behavior. A secretarial position was obtained for her with a large corporation. She was quick and effective in her work, and she was liked by all for her simple, friendly ways. Soon her landlady began to worry about her moral status as evidence accumulated that she left various men, who were casual acquaintances, come up to her room. She showed a good deal of skill in avoiding detection, and her manner made it hard for such suspicions to be taken seriously. She was calm, so free of anything that would suggest a passionate nature, so polite, and so proper, that irregularities of this sort were all but inconceivable to those she met. At least, it was evident that this apparently candid and well-brought-up girl was turning the place into a modest approximation of a brothel. Before the kindly landlady could steel herself to have showdown, Roberta disappeared owing a month’s rent. She had, with her convincing manner, succeeded in drawing a sum of money from a loan fund the employees of the company had built up for their convenience. Having obtained this, Roberta did not show up at work and was not heard from for a couple of weeks. Shortly thereafter, she returned him. She told little of the real story to her parents, but convinced them that she had left her job under honorable circumstances. This was believed until the facts at last caught up with her. #RandolphHarris 10 of 26

Other positions were obtained for her in various towns and at home. Each time, her failures were similar and always without adequate motive or extraneous cause. She returned for psychiatric treatment on several occasions, always saying that she had been helped and expressing simple but complete confidence that she couldn’t have further trouble. Roberta claimed that she was happy with life, and therapy cured her. However, I was informed that she had recent episodes quite as bad as those in the past. With this young lady, as with many other similar patients, the psychiatrist is confronted with the family’s serious questions: What are we to do now? If you were in our place, what would you do? These are questions for which I have found no satisfactory answer. Such a girl causes more harm to herself and to others than the average patient with schizophrenia and a more tragic sorrow to those who love her. It can scarcely be said that she is safer outside an institution than the average patient who hears imaginary voices, or that she can be more satisfactorily cared for at home. The physician’s lament — that after years of hearing sincere people struggle with the same moral and emotional dilemmas, he has become convinced that any institution capable of initiating change must be roused from its “scrupulous inattention” — speaks to a broader crisis of modern life. We live in a world so demanding and disorienting that many individuals require not only therapeutic support but also medication and sustained religious study to remain grounded. #RandolphHarris 11 of 26

While God dwells within us, we often need deliberate reminders to reflect the image of Jesus Christ in our daily conduct. Within this framework, the law of chastity emerges not as a restriction but as a divine safeguard. Like all of God’s commandments, it is given to promote peace, joy, and emotional as well as physical well‑being. Chastity — refraining from sexual relations outside a legal marriage between a man and a woman, and cultivating purity in thoughts, words, and actions — functions as a stabilizing discipline. It calls for complete loyalty within marriage and prepares individuals to receive God’s greatest blessings, including eternal life. Physical intimacy between husband and wife can be joyful, beautiful, and sacred. It is a gift from God for the creation of children and for the expression of love within marriage. When people care for one another enough to keep the law of chastity, their love, trust, and commitment can increase, resulting in greater happiness and unity. Chastity is a commandment from God, and obedience to that law helps us prepare to enter the house of the Lord. Though sexual sins are very serious, the gift of repentance is real. Because the Lord loves us, He will fully forgive us when we choose to repent and turn to Him. Repentance requires patience, perseverance, and a change of heart, but it is worth the effort. “Upon you, my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah, I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; and this shall never be taken again from the earth, until the sons of Levi do offer again an offering unto the Lord in righteousness,” reports Doctrine and Covenants 13.1. Confessing to your leader can help you unburden yourself so you can seek the Lord’s help to change and heal and know how to move forward. #RandolphHarris 12 of 26

This may sound very theoretical, and it is theoretical until it becomes clear at what point this attitude has its basis in reality, so that it can itself become real. “Be ye wise as serpents and harmless as doves” is a saying of Jesus Christ (Matthew 10.16) and is therefore, like all his sayings, interpreted only by Jesus himself. No man can look with undivided vision at God and at the world of reality so long as God and the world are torn asunder. Try as he may, he can only let his eyes wander distractedly from one to the other. However, there is a place at which God and the cosmic reality are reconciled, a place at which God and man have become one. That and that alone is what enables man to set his eyes upon God and upon the world at the same time. This place does not lie somewhere out beyond reality in the realm of ideas. It lies in the midst of history as a divine miracle. It lies in Jesus Christ, the Reconciler of the world. As an ideal, the unity of simplicity and wisdom is doomed to failure, just as is any other attempt to hold one’s own against reality. It is an impossible ideal, and an extremely contradictory one. However, if it is founded upon the reality of a world which is at one with God in Jesus Christ, the commandment of Jesus acquires reality and meaning. Whoever sees Jesus Christ does indeed see God and the world in one. He can henceforward no longer see God without the world or the world without God. #RandolphHarris 13 of 26

In God, the world was reconciled with God. It is not by its overthrowing but by its reconciliation that the world is subdued. It is not by ideals and programmers or by conscience, duty, responsibility, and virtue that reality can be confronted and overcome, but simply and solely by the perfect love of God. Here again, it is not by a general idea of love that this is achieved, but by the really lived love of God in Jesus Christ. This love of God does not withdraw from reality into noble souls secluded from the world. It experiences and suffers the reality of the world in all its hardness. The world exhausts its fury against the body of Christ. However, tormented, He forgives the world its sins. That is how the reconciliation is accomplished. The figure of the Reconciler, of the God-Man Jesus Christ, comes between God and the world and fills the center of all history. In this figure, the secret of the world is laid bare, and in this figure, there is revealed the secret of God. No abyss of evil can remain hidden from Him through whom the world is reconciled with God. However, the abyss of the love of God encompasses even the most abysmal godlessness of the world. In a manner which passes all comprehension, God reverses the judgment of justice and piety, declares Himself guilty towards the world, and thereby wipes out the world’s guilt. God Himself set out on the path of humiliation and atonement, and thereby absolves the world. God is willing to be guilty of our guilt. He takes upon Himself the punishment and the suffering which this guilt has brought on us. God Himself answers for godlessness, love for hatred, the saint for the sinner. Now, there is no more godlessness, no more hatred, no more sin which God has not taken upon Himself, suffered for an expiated. Now, there is no more reality, no more world, but it is reconciled with God and at peace. God did this in His dear Son Jesus Christ. #RandolphHarris 14 of 26

Look at the girl who has money. A false lover can perhaps deceive her, so that it appears as if he loved her, although what he really loves if money. She may joyfully, perhaps even gratefully, continue to live in the fantasy that she is loved. However, no one can deceive the Good, nay, not in all eternity! Not in all eternity! Yes, it is just there that one has the least chance of deceiving it. Perhaps here on earth it can be accomplished; not that the Good is deceived, but men may be deceived by the likeness of the Good. Such does not escape the attention of the Good. From time to time, it focuses its wrath on such man and reveals his deception. However, often the Good lets the deceiver go his way because the Good knows, in itself, that it is the stronger. Only a weak and effeminate man demands immediate justification, demands immediate success in the outer world, just because he is weak, and therefore must have an outward proof—that he is the strongest. The one who is really strong and is really the more powerful, quietly concedes a domain to the weakling and readily allows him to give the impression of being the stronger. So, with the Good, when it tolerates such a deceiver, it is as if it said to him secretly, “Yes, enjoy yourself with your false appearance, but remember, we two, we shall talk together again.” #RandolphHarris 15 of 26

The double-minded one stands at a parting of the ways. Two visions appear: the Good and the reward. It is not in his power to bring them into agreement, for they are fundamentally different from each other. Only that reward which God for all eternity adds to the Good in the inner realm, only that is in truth homogenous with the Good. So he stands pondering and reflecting. If he is wholly absorbed in his pondering, then he continues to stand—a symbol of double-mindedness. However, suppose he should tear himself free from the deliberation and should now go forward. Along which way? Ah, do not ask him about that. Perhaps he is able to answer learned questions and to betray extensive knowledge. However, one thing he cannot do, one and only one thing he is not able to do: he cannot answer the question about which of the two ways he is taking. By repeated thoughtful pondering in an attempt to see the heterogeneous together, he has somewhat fused his sight. He believes he has found that there is a third way and that it is this third way along which he is going. This third way has no name. For it does not really exist, and so it is obvious that he, if he is sincere, cannot say which way he is taking. If he is sincere, for otherwise he would indeed declare that he is going along the way of the Good, it may even be important to convince men of that—in order that they may honor him. For honor belongs to the reward which he is seeking after. #RandolphHarris 16 of 26

The third way is the secret which he keeps to himself. And now, how does he go along this third way which is narrower than any rope-dancer’s rope, for it simply does not exist? Does he go steadily and firmly like one that has a definite goal before his eyes; like one that scarcely looks at anything around him in order not to be disturbed; like one that looks for one thing alone—for the goal? No, only a person upon the path of the Good walks in this fashion with only the Good before his eyes. Does he, then, go like the one that is hunting for every sensation along the broad way of pleasure? No, that he does not do. Does he go like a carefree youth who lightheartedly lets his gaze wander over everything about him on his way? Alas, he is too old for that. How does he go, then? He walks so slowly under the circumstances, because of the difficulty of the way. He feels his way forward with his foot and as he finally plants his foot and takes a step, he immediately looks about at the clouds, notes the way the wind blows, and whether the smoke goes straight up from the chimney. It is, namely, the reward—earth’s reward—that he is looking for. And that reward is like the clouds and like the wind and like the smoke of the chimney. And so, he asks his way continually. He gives minute attention to the faces of the passing people in order to learn how the reward stands, what the prices are, what demands the time and the people would place upon the Good if they were to give the reward. #RandolphHarris 17 of 26

What is he really after? Nay, do not ask him about that. Perhaps he would be able to answer every other question with the exception of that one about the way. However, this question he cannot answer in definite terms, if he is to answer it sincerely, for the reason that the answer is all to readily at hand: that he wills the Good and detests vice—when vice seems to be loathsome; that he wills the approbation of the good people—when they are in the majority and possess the power; that he will benefit the good cause—when it is so good as to confer some advantage upon him. Yet, in sincerity, he dares not say definitely what he wills. He dares not say loudly and decisively with the full voice of conviction that he wills the Good. He utters it with the dull caution of double-mindedness. For he knows well enough that the Good and the reward are not rationed out together. Let us assume that by such a careless utterance the Good and the reward came into conflict, and let us assume that he be considered as willing the Good in this manner. Now, suppose that the reward is missing, which has previously happened in this world. What would he do then? Would he will the Good and even be willing to forego the appearance of willing the Good? No, definitely now. Does he, then, will the reward? Yes, but he will not plainly admit it. Does he, then, will the Good? Yes, now and then, perhaps, for decency’s sake, as it is called. He pretends, therefore, to will the Good—for the sake of honor and reward. As a matter of fact, he does occasionally will the Good—to save his face. #RandolphHarris 18 of 26

This is what happens to the man who hankers after a reward. He is so double-minded that one hardly knows whether to laugh or to weep over him, if one does not know that all double-mindedness is destruction. However, if one knows this, he knows well enough what to do, especially when he has his own share of this double-mindedness. Now, this matter of willing the Good for the sake of reward may take a somewhat different form. Perhaps there was a man who really, in all sincerity, willed the Good. Humbly before God, and quickened in his enthusiasm, he cheerfully understood when the world and when men worked against him. He cheerfully understood that this opposition was the reward, and that there was nothing further to be said about it. Strengthened by God, bracing himself only by his confidence, he almost never desired to be rewarded in any other way by this world. However, then he became weary. He clutched after the reward in the narrower sense, and after an easier understanding of the reward. For in general, the closer the understanding lies to misunderstanding, the easier it becomes. He could not bear with the Eternal. He could not endure the opposition of the world and of the people. So, first, he claimed the reward, under the interpretation that there ought to be an agreement between the Good and the world. Finally, he demanded the reward alone. In this fashion, he slipped backwards. Oh, sad end to a good beginning! Oh, Thou the Good’s stern zeal for thyself, that Thou perhaps permmitest him to get the reward in the world, just when Thou hast rejected him; that Thou lettest him get the reward of the world, while he has ungratefully forgotten what a blessedness it is to have Thy reward, while earth withholds her reward from him! #RandolphHarris 19 of 26

Or he did not begin so high, but simply with willing the good in truth. Without knowledge of the world, without having conceived in his heart the possibility of what may happen to man, he piously hoped that the Good would not withhold its reward. Now understood in the light of eternity, this is an eternal and sacred truth. However, in the sense of temporal existence, it is foolish and fruitless cleverness. So he went out into the school of experience, for we all go to the school as long as we live. Life’s school is for adults and, therefore, is somewhat more stern than the children’s school, where the attentive and industrious ones come to the fore among those of the same age. So, life took him into its stern school. However, he resisted. He reduced his demands. He did not wish to deceive the Good. Alas, neither would that help. He believed that as long as he clung to the Good, he possessed a claim upon life. Now, it seemed to him as though the Good alone had claims upon him. At this, his courage slackened. He looked about him, where so many others helped themselves to the reward. The tempter began to frighten him into a feeling of faint-heartedness as to why he did not wish to be like the others, and as to why he insisted upon running after the vagaries of imagination, instead of laying hold of that which is certain. Then, his mind was changed. In life, it happened to him just as in school it might happen to the superior pupil if there were no teacher. The mediocre would gain the dominance and gain powers to seduce the superior pupils, because the good pupil had no teacher in whom to see protection. #RandolphHarris 20 of 26

In life, there is no visible teacher who stands beside the good pupil to encourage him, for in the human condition we are all pupils, all learners in a world without a clear instructor. If the good pupil is to persevere, he must discover the source of encouragement within himself — and this, tragically, he did not find. His courage collapsed; the world offered him no confirmation of the Good he sought, and so he descended, deceived by the very order that had promised reward for righteousness. He willed the Good, yet the world betrayed him most terribly by persuading him to forsake it. In this sense, are not many physicians and surgeons already half‑dead — men who know the anatomy of the body but almost nothing of the soul that inhabits it? Science has seduced us so thoroughly that we now move through life untouched by the wisdom of the ancients, as though their insights into the nature of truth had never existed. In its triumph, science has become its own graveyard. We fail to understand that the realm of truth into which the ancients penetrated still stands open, still real. When science leads humanity to deny its sacred origin and to dismiss every personal testimony of spiritual experience, it ceases to serve man and instead cripples him at the root of his being. And perhaps nowhere is this spiritual crippling more visible than in the moments when the world fractures unexpectedly. #RandolphHarris 21 of 26

The call came in just after 3:20 a.m., when the city was still wrapped in that uneasy quiet that belongs only to the darkest hours before dawn, and yet beneath that silence lay the same truth: a civilization that has forgotten its soul is always one spark away from catastrophe. Dispatch reported flames tearing through a two‑story home on Alderbrook Court, a narrow residential street in East Sacramento where houses sat close enough that one fire could easily become three. Within seconds, the award‑winning Sacramento Fire Department was en route, led by Captain Reinhardt, whose calm under pressure had become something of a legend within the department. As Engine 14 rounded the corner, the crew could already see the orange glow pulsing against the night sky. Flames had burst through the upstairs windows, licking upward into the eaves, and smoke poured out in thick, rolling waves. Neighbors stood helplessly on the sidewalk, some in pajamas, others clutching phones, all of them staring at the inferno devouring the home of a family they knew well. Captain Reinhardt stepped off the engine with the practiced precision of a man who had done this a thousand times, yet never allowed routine to dull his vigilance. “We’ve got active fire on both floors,” he said, scanning the structure. “Two residents unaccounted for. Ladder to the second floor. Medic team, prepare for multiple victims.” The world‑renowned paramedics—Dr. Elric Brandauer and Matthias Falkenberg—were already pulling equipment from their rig. Their reputation had grown far beyond Sacramento: a pair whose clinical skill was matched only by their ability to keep patients calm even in the worst moments of their lives. #RandolphHarris 22 of 26

Inside the burning home, heat pressed against the firefighters like a living thing. The staircase had partially collapsed, forcing Captain Reinhardt and his crew to advance through the kitchen, where flames curled along the ceiling in a menacing dance. The smoke was so dense it felt like wading through a black ocean. They found the first victim—a teenage boy—collapsed near the back door, overcome by smoke while trying to escape. Captain Reinhardt lifted him with a steadiness that belied the danger around them. Outside, Dr. Brandauer immediately began assessing his airway while Falkenberg prepared oxygen and monitored his vitals. The boy’s pulse was weak but present. “Go,” Dr. Brandauer said, his voice firm. “We can stabilize him. Get back in there.” The second victim, the boy’s grandmother, was still upstairs. Flames had consumed most of the hallway, and the floor groaned under the weight of the firefighters’ boots. Captain Reinhardt led the way, refusing to let his crew take a risk he would not take himself. They found her unconscious in her bedroom, the smoke so thick that visibility was nearly zero. As they carried her down the ladder, a sudden burst of flame shot through the roof, showering embers across the yard. Two firefighters were struck by falling debris, one suffering burns to his shoulder, the other a deep laceration along his arm. The paramedics moved with swift coordination–Falkenberg treating the burns while Dr. Brandauer applied pressure to the wound, his gloves slick with blood and soot. By the time the fire was finally contained, seven people had been injured: the two residents, the two firefighters, and three neighbors who had inhaled smoke while trying to help before crews arrived. Yet every one of them survived. As dawn broke over Sacramento, Captain Reinhardt stood beside the smoldering remains of the home, his gear streaked with ash. The world had once again shown its capacity for chaos, but so had his department shown its unwavering commitment to the Good—to life, to courage, to service. And in that fragile hour between night and morning, the award‑winning Sacramento Fire Department and its world‑renowned paramedics had once again proven why the city trusted them with its most desperate moments. #RandolphHarris 23 of 26

#RandolphHarris 24 of 26

#RandolphHarris 25 of 26

In the bitter spring of 1922, for six uncanny days, the Winchester Mystery House became the sole subject of whispered conversation across San Jose. Visitors claimed the mansion seemed almost alive, watching them from behind its stained‑glass eyes as they wandered its impossible hallways. Guides spoke of a strange pull, a quiet insistence that guests return again and again.

Legend soon formed that the house hungered for souls to tour it thirteen times, believing that only then could it claim a fragment of their spirit. Whether born of superstition or something older, the tale spread quickly, and those who felt the mansion’s gaze swore the house remembered every face that crossed its threshold.

The spirits of the Winchester remain active, waiting for the completion of the mansion. For more than a century, they have wandered its unfinished corridors, lingering in stairways that lead nowhere and rooms sealed off from daylight. Some say they are bound not by malice, but by expectation — trapped in the same endless construction Mrs. Sarah Winchester once believed would keep them at peace. The house listens, breathes, and remembers. And until the final nail is driven, the final room raised, the spirits wait for the day the mansion is whole enough to release them… or claim whoever dares to finish what Mrs. Sarah began.

A visit to the Winchester Mystery House is more than a tour—it is an encounter with legend. It is a place where imagination thrives, where history whispers through every corridor, and where the line between fact and folklore blurs in the most enchanting way. Come discover why millions of visitors from around the world consider the Winchester Mystery House a must‑see destination and one of California’s most iconic treasures.

Customer Service and Hygiene at Grocery Outlet – 1700 Capitol Avenue, Sacramento, CA

To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to report ongoing issues at the Grocery Outlet located at 1700 Capitol Avenue in Sacramento, CA. I have been shopping at this location for approximately twenty years—long before it became a Grocery Outlet—and I feel it is important to share concerns that have persisted for some time.
Many of the employees at this store consistently display unprofessional behavior. It is common to see staff standing around joking with each other instead of assisting customers, and on several occasions I have witnessed employees making rude or insulting remarks toward shoppers. In addition, there are serious hygiene concerns. Some employees appear to have poor personal hygiene, and a few have had noticeable odors, including what smelled like feces. This creates an uncomfortable and unsanitary shopping environment.
I continue to visit this store only because it is close to my business, but I avoid it whenever possible due to these issues. After two decades of patronage, it is disappointing to see the store decline to this level.
I hope management will take these concerns seriously and address the customer service and hygiene standards at this location.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Owner and CEO of Randolph Harris II International Institute
The Sweet Self-Torture Which is My Whole Delight

Evil mechanics have been in operation in the minds of men for centuries. Ignorance and all its causes are evil. In some cases, people are unable to discern whether their illness is mental or demonic. Studies assessing individuals with neuro-psychiatric conditions associated with evil-related behavioral abnormalities have been suggesting a potential role of frontal and limbic structures of the brain, as well as of the serotonergic system. The limbic system is a group of structures in the brain that governs emotions, motivation, olfaction (sense of smell), and behavior. The limbic system is also involved in the formation of long-term memory. The structures of the limbic system are located deep within the brain, immediately below the temporal lobes, and are buried beneath the cerebral cortex, just above the brainstem. A dysfunctional limbic system is associated with several conditions and clinical disorders such as epilepsy, dementia, anxiety disorders, and autism. The frontal lobe of the brain is part of the cerebral cortex. It is located at the front of the brain, just behind the forehead, and is one of the five main lobes of the brain. The frontal lobe is the largest section of the brain, covering about one-third of its surface area. The frontal lobe of the brain plays a crucial role in vital functions such as memory, judgment, abstract thinking, creativity, social appropriateness, and motor tasks that involve voluntary movement. #RandolphHarris 1 of 31

The frontal lobes are the most common area for injury to occur in the brain. Damage can lead to a wide variety of symptoms, such as loss of movement, difficulty speaking, and changes in social behavior. The serotoninergic system is defined as the network involved in the neural regulation of mood and anxiety, playing a crucial role in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. It is characterized by the expression and activation of serotonin receptors, which influence emotional behavior and neurodevelopmental outcomes, particularly in response to early life stressors and maternal diet. Symptoms of evil tend to be extreme manipulativeness, a lack of empathy, pathological lying, an obsession with control, sadistic enjoyment of pain, and vindictiveness. If the frontal and/or limbic structures, and/or serotonergic system is damaged, because these structures and systems play vital roles in regulating the behavior of a human being, it is clear why people may believe that a person is possessed by an evil demon. Typically, evil people try to take everything you love and destroy it. They will go as far as destroying your vehicle, breaking into your home, vandalizing it, stealing, and slander. They will even go as far as doing things like killing your small pets and loved ones, poisoning, and trying to kill you. Therefore, in many cultures, evil and mental illness are often used interchangeably. However, because some mental illnesses are so severe, people believe that it can be nothing other than evil. #RandolphHarris 2 of 31

People with mental illness are members of our communities, and nearly every element of life is affected. Nearly 50 percent of Americans have been mentally ill at some point in their lives, and more than a quarter have suffered from mental illness in the past twelve months. Some people may fail to recognize their problems as symptoms of treatable mental disorders, whereas others may worry about being stigmatized as “crazy.” Nevertheless, approximately 60 percent of people with mental disorders go untreated. Strangely enough, despite the vast numbers of untreated individuals, nearly one-third of all mental health visits involved problems too mild to meet criteria for any psychiatric disorder. So, in addition to the many cases of unmet need, we have too many instances of needs going unmet. Therefore, people who are experiencing ordinary problems of living may be consuming scarce resources needed by those with serious problems such as schizophrenia and depression. Which means that those most in need of treatment do not receive it, whereas those least in need do. Of course, not all psychological troubles signify a mental disorder. Mental health professionals often provide helpful guidance to people whose distress arises from difficulties in everyday life. People seek counseling for relationship problems, difficulties at work, or loneliness. Moreover, people whose mental illness has gone into remission may still require counseling to ensure sustained recovery. #RandolphHarris 3 of 31

To further highlight this situation, therapists can help patients with a history of psychosis adhere to medication regimens and cope with life stressors that might otherwise lead to a relapse into depression or mania. In this sense, not everyone who sees a therapist necessarily counts as a case of draining scarce resources. With nearly half of all Americans suffering from mental disorders, many wonder what a mental disorder is? A mental disorder is characterized by a clinically significant disturbance in an individual’s cognition, emotional regulation, or behavior. It is usually associated with distress or impairment in important areas of functioning. There are many different types of mental disorders. Mental disorders may also be referred to as mental health conditions. The latter is a broader term covering mental disorders, psychosocial disabilities, and (other) mental states associated with significant distress, impairment in functioning, or risk of self-harm. Nearly 1.2 billion people around the world are living with a mental disorder, with anxiety and depressive disorders the most common. While effective prevention and treatment options exist, most people with mental disorders do not have access to effective care. Many people also experience stigma, discrimination, and violations of human rights. This can often lead to self-torture. Self-torture is, in part, an inevitable by-product of self-hate. Whether the neurotic tries to whip himself into a perfection impossible to attain, hurls accusations against himself, or disparages or frustrates himself, he is actually torturing himself. Making self-torture a separate category among the expressions of self-hate involves the contention that there is, or may be, an intent at self-tormenting. #RandolphHarris 4 of 31

We must, of course, in any case of neurotic anguish, consider all possibilities. Consider, for instance, self-doubts. They may result from inner conflicts and may show in endless and inconclusive inner dialogues, in which a person tries to defend himself against his own self-accusations; they may be an expression of self-hate, aimed at undermining the ground on which a person stands. Actually, they can be most tormenting. Like Hamlet—or even worse than he—people can be eaten up by self-doubts. Certainly, their reasons for operating also constitute an unconscious intent at self-torture? A further example of this same caliber: procrastination. As we know, many factors may be responsible for delaying decision or action, such as general inertia or a pervasive incapacity to take a stand. The procrastinator himself knows that things postponed often will loom larger and larger, and that, in actual fact, he may inflict considerable suffering upon himself. And here we sometimes get a first glimpse that goes beyond inconclusive questions. When, on account of his postponing, he does get into an unpleasant or threatening situation, he may say to himself with unmistakable glee: “It serves you right.” That still does not mean that he procrastinates because he is driven to torture himself, but it does suggest a kind of Schadenfreude, a vindictive satisfaction at the self-inflicted distress. No evidence so far, then, for an active tormenting—but rather the gleeful attitude of a bystander watching the victim squirm and writhe. #RandolphHarris 5 of 31

If it were not for a crescendo of other observations, showing the existence of active self-tormenting drives, all of this would remain inconclusive. In certain forms of stinginess with self, for instance, the patient observes that his petty economizing is not simply an “inhibition” but is peculiarly satisfying, sometimes almost amounting to a passion. Then, there are certain patients with hypochondriac propensities who not only have their honest-to-God fears but also seem to frighten themselves in a rather cruel way. A touch of a sore throat turns into tuberculosis, a stomach upset into cancer, an aching muscle into poliomyelitis, a headache into a brain tumor, a spell of anxiety into insanity. One such patient went through what she called the “poisonous process.” At slight initial signs of restlessness or sleeplessness, she would tell herself that now she was in for a new cycle of panic. Each night thereafter, it would become worse and worse until it reached unbearable proportions. Comparing the initial fears to a little snowball, it was as if she rolled it on and on until it grew into an avalanche, which in the end would bury her. In a poem she wrote at that time, she speaks of “the sweet self-torture which is my whole delight.” In these hypochondriac cases, one factor which sets the self-torture going can be isolated. They feel that they should have absolute health, poise, and fearlessness. Any little sign to the contrary makes them turn mercilessly against themselves. Furthermore, when analyzing a patient’s sadistic fantasies and impulses, we recognize that these may originate in sadistic impulses, we recognize that these may originate in sadistic impulses directed against himself. #RandolphHarris 6 of 31

Certain patients have at times compulsive urges or fantasies to torture others. These seem to focus mostly on children or helpless people. In one instance, they concerned a hunchbacked servant, Anne, in a quieted partly by the intensity of the impulse and partly because he felt bewildered by them. Anne was pleasant enough and had never hurt his feelings. Before the sadistic fantasies started, he had alternately felt oathing and sympathy for her physical deformity. Both of these feelings, he had recognized as stemming from his identifying himself with the girl. He was physically strong and healthy, but when he felt hopeless and contemptuous regarding his psychic entanglements, he would refer to himself as a cripple. The sadistic impulses and fantasies started when he first noticed in Anne a certain overeagerness to serve and a tendency to make a doormat out of herself. Most likely, Anne had long been this way. However, his observation struck at the very point when his own self-effacing trends had come closer to awareness and rumblings of self-hate on these grounds had become audible. The compulsive urge to torture her was hence interpreted as an active externalization of impulses to torture himself which, in addition, gave him a thrilling feeling of power over a weaker creature. The active urge then dwindled to sadistic fantasies, and these disappeared as his self-effacing trends and his loathing of them came into clearer focus. I do not believe that all sadistic impulses—or actions—toward others have their sole origin in self-hate. #RandolphHarris 7 of 31

However, I think it is likely that the externalization of self-tormenting drives is always a contributing factor. At any rate, the connection is sufficiently frequent to cause us to be alert to its possibilities. In other patients, fears of torture appear without any external provocation. They also arise at times of increased self-hate and express a reaction of fear to a passive externalization of self-tormenting drives. Finally, there are masochistic and sexual activities and fantasies. I am thinking of masturbation fantasies which extend from being degraded to being cruelly tortured; masturbatory activities that accompany scratching or slapping oneself, pulling out hair, walking in too tight shoes, assuming painfully twisted positions; sexual acts in which the person must be scolded, beaten, tied, or forced to perform menial or disgusting tasks before he can reach sexual satisfaction. The structure of these practices is rather complicated. I believe that we must distinguish at least two different kinds. In one of them, the person experiences a vindictive pleasure from torturing himself; in the other, he is identified with the degraded self and can, for reasons to be discussed later, gain sexual satisfaction this way only. There is, however, reason to believe that this distinction is valid only for the conscious experience—that in fact, he is always both the torturer and the tortured, that he derives satisfaction from being degraded as well as from degrading himself. One of the implications for analytical therapy is to look out in all instances of factual self-torture for a secret intent at self-torment. Another one is to be alert to the possibility of externalizations of self-tormenting tendencies. Whenever an intent at self-torture seems reasonably clear, we must examine carefully the intrapsychic situation and ask ourselves whether (and for what reasons) self-hate was increased at that time. #RandolphHarris 8 of 31

I will now turn to a description of the way in which historical prototypes reappear in the transferences and resistances encountered in the treatment of adults. The following excerpt illustrates the relationship of an infantile identity crisis to the patient’s adult lifestyle. A dancer, of considerable good looks, although extremely small in stature, developed the annoying symptom of having to hold her torso so rigidly upright that her dancing became awkward and ungainly. The analysis proved her hysterical erectness to be representative of an unconscious penis envy which had been provoked in childhood and had become intrinsic to her exhibitionism. The patient was the only daughter of a second-generation German-American, a successful businessman given to a certain exhibitionistic individualism which included a great pride in his powerful physique. He insisted on an erect posture (probably no longer consciously Prussian) on the part of his blonde sons, but did not require the same from his dark-haired daughter; in fact, he did not seem to consider the overall posture of the female body important. This inequality of treatment reinforced the patient’s wish to compete with her brothers and to exhibit an “improved” posture in her dancing which became a caricature of Prussian ancestors whom she had never seen. The historical meaning of such a symptom is clarified by the analysis of the resistances with which it is defended. The patient, who in her conscious and “positive” thoughts always drew a parallel between the father’s and the analyst’s tall, “Nordic” physiques, to her great dismay, found herself dreaming of the analyst as a small, dirty, crumpled-up person of another religion and/or background. #RandolphHarris 9 of 31

With this image of an inferior race and weak masculinity, she apparently attempted to disqualify him from the right to explore the secret of her symptom. However, it also illuminated the danger to her fragile ego identity of an unruly pair of historical prototypes—an ideal prototype (German, tall, phallic) and an evil prototype (a different race/religion, dwarfish, castrated). The patient’s final ego identity had attempted to subsume and to sublimate this dangerous alternative in the role of the radically modern and erect dancer—a creative solution which, however, still harbored too much of an exhibitionistic protest against the inferiority of her female body. Her father’s male exhibitionism, as well as his German prejudices, had been inculcated into the patient throughout the sensual testimony of childhood and thus had retained a dangerous degree of disturbing power in her unconscious. Analyses of this kind permit us, I think, to generalize that the unconscious evil identity, that which the ego is most afraid to resemble, is often composed of the images of the violated (castrated) body, the ethnic out-group, and the exploited minority. Although it manifests itself in a great variety of syndromes, this association is all-pervasive, in men and women, in majorities and minorities, and in all classes of a given national or cultural unit. For the ego, in the course of its synthesizing efforts, attempts to subsume the most powerful idea and evil prototypes (the final contestants, as it were) and with them the whole existing imagery of superior and inferior, good and bad, masculine and feminine, free and slave, potent and important, beautiful and unattractive, black and white, tall and small, in one simple alternative in order to make one battle and one strategy out of a bewildering number of skirmishes. #RandolphHarris 10 of 31

In this connection, the latent image of the more homogeneous past exerts its reactionary influence in the specific resistances. We must study it, so that we may understand the historical origin of the accentuated alternative for which the patient’s ego is searching. The unconscious associations of ethnic prototypes of good and evil with moral and sexual ones are, we may add, a necessary part of any group formation. In studying them, psychoanalysis perfects its therapeutic methods and, at the same time, contributes to the knowledge of the unconscious concomitants of group prejudice. However, in the inventory of our patients’ ideal and evil prototypes, we probably also meet face to face the clinical facts on which Dr. Jung based his theory of inherited prototypes (“archetypes,” a very typical example of a person or thing). Dr. Jung’s controversial theory reminds us in passing of the fundamental fact that conceptual controversies can throw light on the problem of the observer’s identity problems, especially in the initial stages of original observation. Dr. Jung, it seems, could find a sense of identity in psychoanalytic work only by a juxtaposition of his ancestors’ religious and mystical space-time with whatever he sensed in Dr. Freud’s Jewish ancestry. His scientific rebellion thus also led to some ideological regression and eventually to (weakly denied) reactionary political acts. This phenomenon had its counterpart in the reaction to his findings within the psychoanalytic movement. As though in fear of endangering a common group identity based on an identification with Dr. Freud’s personal greatness, psychoanalytic observers chose to ignore not only Dr. Jung’s excesses but also the kind of universal fact he had, indeed, observed. #RandolphHarris 11 of 31

Such concepts as the “anima” and the “animus,” id est, the imagery representatives of man’s feminine and a woman’s masculine “side,” seem at any rate recognizable in my woman patient’s caricatured images of masculinity and femininity and in her more genuine imagery as well. The synthesizing function of the ego constantly works on subsuming in fewer and fewer images and personified Gestalten the fragments and loose ends of all infantile identifications. In doing so, it not only uses existing historical prototypes; it also employs mechanisms of condensation and pictorial representation which characterize the products of collective imagery. In Dr. Jung’s “persona” a weak ego seems to sell out to a compelling social prototype. A fake ego identity is established which suppresses rather than synthesizes those experiences and functions which endanger the “front.” A dominant prototype of masculinity, for example, forces a man to exclude from his ego identity all that which characterizes the evil image of the lesser gender, the castrate. This may leave much of his receptive and maternal propensity dissimulated, undeveloped, and guilt-ridden, making a shell of mannishness out of what is left. The social reality of everyday life is thus apprehended in a continuum of typification, which are progressively anonymous as they are removed from the “here and now” of the face-to-face situation. At one pole of the continuum are those others with whom I frequently and intensively interact in face-to-face situations—my “inner circle,” as it were. At the other pole are highly anonymous abstractions, which by their very nature can never be available in face-to-face interaction. Social structure is the sum total of these typifications and of the recurrent patterns of interaction established by means of them. As such, social structure is an essential element of the reality of everyday life. #RandolphHarris 12 of 31

My relations with others are not limited to consociates and contemporaries. I also relate to predecessors and successors, to those others who have preceded and will allow me in the encompassing history of my society. Expect for those who are past consociates (my dead friend Jeff), I relate to my predecessors through highly anonymous typifications—“my great-grandfather who immigrated to America about 400 years ago,” and even more, “the Founding Fathers.” My successors, for understandable reasons, are typified in an even more anonymous manner—“my children’s children,” or “future generations.” These typifications are substantively empty projections, almost completely devoid of individualized content, whereas the typifications of predecessors have at least some such content, albeit of a highly mythical sort. The anonymity of both these sets of typifications, however, does not prevent their entering as elements into the reality of everyday life, sometimes in a very decisive way. After all, I may sacrifice my life in loyalty to the Founding Fathers—or, for that matter, on behalf of future generations. Mr. Hitler believed that is what he was doing to protect Germany. The actions of Mr. Hitler and his regime are without precedent in history because history gives no other example of a doctrine of such total homogeneous identity being used to seize the levers of command of a civilized nation. However, above all, for the first time in history, the rulers of a country have used their immense power to establish a mystique homogeneous conquest over their nation. #RandolphHarris 13 of 31

This first attempt to found a Church on the rebirth of Christ was paid for by the conquest of Lidice. This conquest demonstrates clearly that the systematic and scientific aspect of the Nazi movement really displays a drive for pride and unity. Until then, there were supposedly only two possible attitudes for a conqueror toward a village that was considered rebellious. Either calculated repression and cold-blooded execution of hostages, or a savage and necessarily brief sack by enraged soldiers. Lidice was conquered by both methods simultaneously. It illustrates the ravages of that prideful form of reason which is one of many values that can be found in the whole story. Not only were all the houses burned to the ground, the one hundred and seventy-four men of the village shot, the two hundred and three women deported, and the three hundred children transferred elsewhere to be educated in the religion of the Fuhrer, but special teams spent months improving infrastructure. After that, Lidice was a possibility of how to improve on infrastructure development, according to the logic of the movement. The nihilist revolution, which is expressed historically in the Hitlerian religion, thus only aroused an insensate passion for national unity, which led to economic recovery. The party implemented policies that reduced unemployment significantly in Germany during the 1930s. Infrastructure projects, such as the Autobahn, stimulated economic growth. The Nazi regime promoted a sense of national pride and unity among many Germans, appealing to those disillusioned by the Treaty of Versailles. And the new national identity emphasized a strong, revitalized Germany, which resonated with a population facing economic hardship. #RandolphHarris 14 of 31

Mr. Hitler presents the example, perhaps unique in History, of a leader who did everything he could to put his people first. For himself, for his people, and for the world, he was the archetype of a warrior, national unity, and prosperity. Mr. Hitler left quite a legacy in his final justification—that is, the German nation—henceforth made this man, whose presence in history for year on end haunted the minds of millions of men, into a consistent and powerful phantom. Mr. Hitler could have stopped the war, but he only valued the material and political success of Germany until the triumphant end. Some might believe that Germany lost the war, but because of Mr. Hitler, Germany has seen an ascent to a global economic power. This is known as the “German economic miracle” or Wirtschaftswunder. Today, Germany has the third-largest economy in the world, coming in just behind Japan and the United States of America. Germany is well-known for its high-quality engineering and manufactured products, particularly its cars, such as Rolls-Royce, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen. The German chemical and pharmaceutical sectors are significant, with companies like Bayer and the invention of aspirin. Germany has a strong presence in electrical engineering and electronics, with companies like Siemens and Bosch being well-known. German is known for its beer, sausages, meats, sweets, baked goods, beer steins, and cutlery. And Germany has more castles than the United States of America has McDonald’s locations. In Germany, there are approximately 25,000 castles, compared to the estimated 14,000 McDonald’s in the United States of America. And Mr. Hitler aimed at gradually dominating the world; by being the World’s third-largest economy, it is possible that this universal empire could one day become a reality. #RandolphHarris 15 of 31

With Germany, for the first time in history, we saw a doctrine and movement based on an Empire in arms that has, as its purpose, definitive revolution, and the final unification of the world. Mr. Hitler wanted to fix the course of history for a thousand years. He believed himself to be on the point of doing so, and the realist philosophers of the conquered nations who were preparing to acknowledge this understand that it is still a possibility in the twenty-first century. And, as indefatigable as history itself, the claim of the human race to divinity is once more brought to life, with more seriousness, more efficiency, and more reason, under the auspices of the rational State as it is to be found in Germany, once more. Being keenly aware of the institutional pressures of modern capitalism, English economists, prominently Ricardo, as well as Marx, represented the objective theory of defining “class” in terms of typically recurrent incomes: rent, profit, wage. Accordingly, for them, landlord, entrepreneur, and worker make up the class structure. It does not matter whether these agents conceive of themselves as Britons, highlanders, or whatnot; their class positions are strictly located by their place and functions within the objective economic order. Marx, adhering to this tradition, added a historical aspect by emphasizing the specifically modern nature of bourgeois and proletarian classes; Subjective theories of class, on the other hand, have placed great emphasis upon the psychic traits of “class members.” Those holding this subjective theory have been eager to speak of the “fourth estate” as emerging side by side with the older estates. Conceptions of respectability and of social honor, descriptive elements of political and religious opinions, and sentiments connected with local and regional ways of life displace the strict theoretical approach of the economists. It was left to Moeller van den Bruck, author of The Third Reich, to carry the subjective theory of classes to absurdity: “He is a proletarian who wants to think of himself as one. The proletarian consciousness makes man a proletarian, not the mechanization of labor, not wage-dependency on the capitalist mode of production.” #RandolphHarris 16 of 31

Max Weber is not ready to overcome hard economic fate by such acrobatics of willpower. Class situations are determined by the relations of the market; in the last analysis, they go back to the differences between the propertied and the non-propertied. He thus shares with the objective school the emphasis upon the economic order and the strict distinction between objectively characterized positions and a variety of shifting and subjective attitudes that may be related to such positions. In locating the class problem in the market and in the streams of income and property, Weber points towards production and its modern unit, the capitalist enterprise. He is prepared to give full credit to Marx for his insight into the historical nature of the modern class structure. Only when subjective opinions can be attributed to men in an objective class situation does Weber speak of “class-consciousness”; and when he focuses upon problems of “conventions,” “styles of life,” of occupational attitudes, he prefers to speak of prestige or of “status groups.” These latter problems, of course, point towards consumption, which, to be sure, depends upon income derived from production or from property, but which goes beyond this sphere. By making this sharp distinction between class and status groups, Weber is able to refine the problems of stratification to an extent which thus far has not been surpassed. Furthermore, the need is not for further mumbled, vague, or utopian and unrealistic proposals that are more words than practicable suggestions, but for specific and serious ideas. When the facts are incomplete and the reasoning is incorrect, the conclusions are hardly unbreakable. By the assistance of logic, a man may as easily deceive himself as he may delude others. #RandolphHarris 17 of 31

Archetypal heroes and heroines are people who show courage in navigating tests towards resolution. As archetypes, they are energy patterns in the collective unconscious that motivate and organize the personality. Typically, they traverse a cycle that moves from the current status quo or normal to a call to adventure, to tests with helpers, and a return to a normal with a changed gift in service to society. Their tests in mythic or cultural stories are death-defying feats that a hero must face; metaphorically, the term can be applied to the adversity humans face throughout their lives. They complete the series of tests as a changed person or with resolution. The hero does not have an easy path. This path includes risks, sometimes fighting an opponent, rushing into a burning house to save people, and enduring hardships while embodying the characteristics of humility and endurance. Heroes, like the ones with the award-winning Sacramento Fire Department, have actions that are characterized by courage, voluntary action, and service, and their motivations do not stem from the expectations of extrinsic gain. Not too long ago, there was a fast-moving blaze that destroyed a building and jumped a narrow alley, and consumed another business as well. Fire crews encounter the interior of the third building completely involved with the fire. An interior attack was attempted, but crews were forced outside by the heat and the falling debris. The award-winning Sacramento Fire Department stopped the fire from spreading into the neighboring homes. A brisk 15-mile-per-hour breeze blowing from the south threatened to spread fire into nearby residences, but fire crews were deployed between the fire and the houses and kept it from going any further. #RandolphHarris 18 of 31

It has been quite a while since emergency vehicles introduced a new type of warning device. Sure, they evolved from flashing lights to rotating lights to strobe light-emitting diodes (LEDs), but it is still just a light. Sirens have also become more effective, providing wider ranges of frequencies that can better penetrate newer vehicles. Studies are underway to bring a new type of alerting method to approaching emergency vehicles that has less to do with visual or audible warning, and more to do with vehicle communicating with each other. In the past several years, GPS systems have been more readily available and affordable as a bolt-on accessory to automobiles. Today, many new vehicles are being produced with GPS system from the factory built-in, and there is a good chance they will become standard on all vehicles. Some technological forecasters suggest that someday vehicles will communicate with each other through GPS. For example, assume you are traveling out of state in your BMW i7 to visit family, and type the address into your GPS. As your vehicle tracks its location against satellites, it uses “Connected Vehicle Technology” to communicate with vehicles around you. The advantage for highway traffic flow is that communication can allow groups of vehicles with similar destinations to be assembled into “trains” that can travel at a faster pace, closer together, and with greater fuel efficiency. The bonus for emergency vehicles is the ability to warn others. If an ambulance was able to signal vehicles ahead through GPPS map or some other type of display, traffic would know from which direction the ladder truck was approaching, how close it was, and even the lane it was in. #RandolphHarris 19 of 31

Although not every vehicle the fire department overtakes will have GPS, the ones that do will have more information available to them. Applications could include alerting other emergency vehicles as they converge in order to avoid crashes at intersections. The same type of alerting mechanism might change the message when the vehicle sets its parking brake to alert approaching motorists of an emergency vehicle stopped ahead or a crash on the highway. It may even be capable of providing alternate routes to avoid the area, or could direct which lane for other motorists to choose. Advanced safety systems within emergency vehicles are likely to include a new generation of airbags, increased rollover protection, and better braking systems. Vehicle operators may have greater access to driving simulators, better preparing them for crash avoidance. The future will probably make use of autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles that either take control of a vehicle when a crash is likely, or simply follow GPS coordinates and a traffic monitoring system to drive the vehicle to the scene by the quickest route. If this ever happened, responders would be free to review prefire building plans, prehydrate, or even provide medical treatment en route to the hospital. Many intersections have installed cameras to signal traffic lights or monitor traffic flow. These cameras will probably serve an even greater function for emergency responders in the future. Panoramic-view cameras have now been developed, allowing a 360-degree view from the roof of a vehicle. Imagine a camera mounted to make tactical decisions or critique an incident. Installed on bridges, cameras could be used to make decisions about lane closures or detours several exist back from an incident. They could be mounted to buildings or towers to assist in the dispatch of emergency vehicles. A panoramic detection system (PDS) could utilize the images to automatically change traffic flows or announcement boards. Finally, these cameras and systems could be used to record details about a crash scene for investigation, which would be valuable in clearing the scene sooner. #RandolphHarris 20 of 31

If you see a fire truck stopped in the street without the lights on, be very careful. Sometimes there is an emergency, and you should not pass the fire truck. It might be a good idea to safely turn around and go another way because if you hit someone and they happen to die, you could be charged with manslaughter. Sometimes fire firefighters are getting back into their vehicle, and if you pass the apparatus, you may collide with a firefighter who is on foot. Also, be sure to look at their signals; sometimes emergency vehicles are in motion, albeit slowly, and drivers try to pass them, and this could lead to a dangerous situation. Also, if you are in an intersection when you see an emergency vehicle, continue through the intersection. Drive to the right as soon as it is safe and stop. Obey any direction, order, or signal given by a law enforcement officer or a firefighter. Even if they conflict with existing signs, signals, or laws, follow their orders. When their siren or flashing lights are on, it is against the law to follow within 300 feet of any fire engine, law enforcement vehicle, ambulance, or other emergency vehicle. If you drive to the scene of a fire, collision, or other disaster, you can be arrested. When you do this, you are getting in the way of firefighters, ambulance crews, or other rescue and emergency personnel. The concept of professional courage does not always mean being as tough as nails, either. It also suggests a willingness to listen to other people’s problems, to go to bat for them in a tough situation, and it means knowing just how far they can go. It also means being willing to tell the boss when he or she is wrong. #RandolphHarris 21 of 31

California is the third most expensive state in the nation. In 37 percent of counties, a family of four living on a six-figure income is now considered low-income. The average home price in California is nearly $1,000,000.00 USD, while the average salary is $96,036.00, meaning that most Californians cannot even afford to buy a home. California is having an affordability crisis. A single person making an income above $100,000 is now considered low-income in five counties in California. This distinction now applies to individuals living in Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, and Marin counties. The maximum percentage of your gross income that you should earmark for a monthly mortgage payment is calculated at 28 percent, and no more than 36 percent of your gross income to all debts, including mortgage. If you take 28 percent of the median household income per home in Sacramento County, homeowners can only afford a mortgage of $2,070.23 per month. And if you take 36 percent of their gross income to all debts, including mortgage, they should be devoting no more than $2,661.72 a month to these debts. The mortgage lenders must be using some kind of sorcery to get buyers into these expensive homes. To afford one of these homes using traditional guidelines, a household would need to gross $11,280.24 per month or $135,362.88 per year, but the median household in Sacramento County is grossing $7,393.67 a month or $88,724.00 annually, and that typically means two to four people in the home are working and contributing to the mortgage. Home prices in Sacramento County are rivaling the Bay Area, and in some cases, homes in the Bay Area are more affordable. Historically, homes in the Bay Area have been more expensive because they have higher-paying jobs, a larger population, and the Bay Area is a tourist destination. Contributing to the housing affordability crisis is Gavin Newsom, who has been lavishing illegal immigrants with taxpayer-funded resources and cash aid, when state workers should be receiving a 25 percent wage increase instead. #RandolphHarris 22 of 31

In 2025, many people in California saw their bills increase by an estimated $500 a month. This includes items such as food, automobile insurance, homeowners’ insurance, and electricity. In fact, more than 3 million people in California are facing household hardship, and more than 300,000 of them are facing eviction soon. This comes at a time when California is having a shortage of affordable housing. The crisis is caused by nearly half a century-old laws that discourage home sales and encourage higher rents. The incompetence in California is very easy to see. From 2018 to 2023, California received $24 billion, which they used to fund 30 homeless and housing programs. These programs created 100,000 units. That is an average cost of $240,000 per unit. In comparison, Roger Lucas, owner of Grand Castle, LLC, spent $50 million to build The Grand Castle, which is a 522-unit residential apartment community in Grandville, Michigan. The community includes studios, 1 bedroom, 2 bedrooms, 3 bedrooms, and even a multi-level penthouse. Rents generally range from $1,000 to $2,500. The community is a 23.6-acre site. It features 750 covered parking spaces, a clubhouse, a resort-style swimming pool, and was built over a period of 12 to 18 months. The average cost was about $95,785.45 per unit, which is $144,214.55 less per unit than California spent. California also has the highest unemployment rate in the country at 5.4 percent, while the national average is 4.1 percent. While Americans are struggling to find and afford housing, Gavin Newsom, Democrat governor of California, signed two bills into law on February 7, 2025, to protect illegal immigrants. Bills SBX 1 1: Budget Act of 2024, and SBX 1 2: Budget Act of 2024, allocates $50 million to protect illegal immigrants from deportation. Governor Gavin Newsom also granted 700,000 illegal immigrants free health care, which costs taxpayers $3 billion annually. At the same time, Newsom cut vital programs for veterans, school children, the disabled, and the homeless. The California crisis created by Democrats is driving up home prices and mortgages, and rents all over the nation and the world, making living unaffordable for all, and advocates say the crisis is far from over. #RandolphHarris 23 of 31

Meanwhile, China, where we are sending all our jobs and money, has more than 50 ghost cities, with 65 million vacant homes. Ghost cities are regions where housing has been overdeveloped to the point that these places are uninhabited. If they are all officially counted, California has approximately 4 million homeless people. The highest home prices in the nation, the highest taxes, and the most unfriendly business regulations known to man. Because California is so hostile towards people and businesses, more than 360 companies have fled the state since 2020. Businesses like Chevron, SpaceX, Oracle, and Hewlett-Packard are among the names on that list. Also, more than 500,000 people a year are abandoning California because it is too expensive to live in, Gavin Newsom has criminalized homelessness and actually started arresting people without homes, crime is out of control, and they are losing their jobs due to companies relocating. More than 100 companies have announced layoffs in California for 2025. Intel is cutting 15,000 jobs, PayPal is cutting 2,500, and Meta has terminated 4,000 employees. California also has the highest unemployment rate in the country at 5.4 percent, while the national average is 4.1 percent. The California crisis created by Democrats is driving up home prices and mortgages, and rents all over the nation and the world, making living unaffordable for all, and advocates say the crisis is far from over. Accordingly, California has more than 3.5 million illegal immigrants. Having the Southern American border open and not having American farmland protected, not producing beef, poultry, fish, fruit, produce, and dairy in America, and without American goods and services being our number one manufactured and selling items, America has created a dangerous and significantly elevated risk to national security, national economic security, and national public health. Some people may believe that these claims are overstated, but by not routinely monitoring Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CEVs) or other security-relevant alerts, such as the end-of-life of machinery is how the Oroville Dam Crisis occurred in 2017. #RandolphHarris 24 of 31

Additionally, Newsom seems to be uneducated about economics and is proposing to fast-track his plan to build a $20 billion water tunnel beneath the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, which would eliminate environmental reviews and limit avenues for legal challenges. Gavin Newsom only cares about the environment when his policies allow him to raise taxes and restrict freedoms. To further highlight this illustration of incompetence by Governor Gavin Newsom, Mexico has been causing one of America’s worst environmental disasters. Fifty million gallons a day of industrial chemicals, untreated sewage, and trash flow from Tijuana, Mexico, into southern San Diego County daily. This toxic waste has been turning up on Imperial Beach and is causing the miles of white sands to become polluted and the ocean breeze to smell of feces, which has been sickening residents and wildlife and costing San Diego millions in the form of lost tourism and health problems. The problem has been going on for more than a century, and by 2030, Mexico plans to dump one hundred and twenty million gallons of sewage a day into Imperial Beach. Other crises that have occurred due to neglect of critical infrastructure are the 2025 Palisades fires because Southern California ran out of water, when they are located next to an ocean and they could have simply created desalination plants to help with the water shortage. The water is so plentiful that it is currently eroding land and causing homes to fall into the sea. Desalination has been identified as one technology that will help solve California’s water scarcity problem. Desalination is a cost-effective technology that can transform an abundance of salt water into a reliable supply of potable, fresh water, which is a great way to fight climate change and have enough water for our region’s water requirements. Ras Al Khair, Saudi Arabia, is producing 1,036,000 meters (273,682,192) per day of desalinated water. #RandolphHarris 25 of 31

America needs an approach to eliminate safety vulnerabilities in American cities. There needs to be a road map by the end of 2025, outlining a prioritized approach to eliminate crisis situations in America. There is enough money to send aid to foreign nations, but the American government does not have enough money to care for its infrastructure, provide adequate resources, or end the affordable housing crisis. Nor is there enough money to fund other national critical functions (NCFs). These bad practices of putting America and Americans last are considered exceptionally risky, particularly to national security, national economic security, and national public health and safety. In 2024, Americans spent $100 billion on Japanese cars. As a result, the American automobile trade deficit with Japan was $39 billion. Additionally, Japan exported 1.4 million cars to the United States of America, but only imported 16,000 American-built automobiles. However, Japan imported approximately 143 thousand motor vehicles from the European Union. This is why President Trump created tariffs. We need to balance the trade deficit that America faces with other nations so we are not taken advantage of and so America can go bank to being a creditor nation, instead of borrowing money for other countries. Each year, President Trump is bringing $400 Billion in Tariff revenue into America and hundreds of thousands of new jobs. With this money, America is paying down debt, and with a protion of it, President Trump plans to send Americans a stimulus check anywhere in the range of $1,000 to $2,000. However, if President Trump’s Tariffs are deemed illegal by the Supreme Court, taxpayers will have to pay back trillions and trillions of dollars. As we literally and /or figuratively see gangs, federal judges, and Governor Gavin Newsom fighting with federal law enforcement and President Trump– states and cities refusing to honor federal laws. Politicians are also showing an utter disregard for the Constitution of the United States of America, and anarchy is becoming increasingly common. #RandolphHarris 26 of 31

Anarchism is a cluster of doctrines and attitudes centered on the belief that government is both harmful and unnecessary. Derived from the Greek root anarchos, meaning “without authority,” anarchism, anarchist, and anarchy are used to express both approval and disapproval. The anarchist denies man-made laws, regards property as a means of tyranny, and believes that crimes are merely the product of property and authority. However, the anarchist would argue that their denial of constitutions and governments leads not to “no justice” but to the real justice inherent in the free development of human sociality—the natural inclination, when unfettered by laws, to live according to the principles and practice of mutual aid. Anarchism is also a form of treason. Treason, the crime of betraying a nation or a sovereign by acts considered dangerous to security. In English law, treason includes the levying of war against the government and the giving of aid and comfort to the monarch’s enemies. In the United States of America, treason was defined restrictively by the framers of the Constitution. Treason against the United States of America “shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them aid and comfort,” which is something that many politicians are currently guilty of. The American government should know all exploitable vulnerabilities and fix them before the situation becomes a crisis. Failure to take such mitigating actions is dangerous and significantly elevates risk to national security, national economic security, and national public health and safety. The American government must understand that significant time and resources must be invested in America. They must also encourage corporations to plan for both mitigating safety vulnerabilities in the short term and eliminating them in the long term. For instance, a company might begin by reaching out to the federal, state, or local government and requesting tax incentives to provide security to dangerous communities, to help the government repair bridges and potholes. #RandolphHarris 27 of 31

Drug cartels have been threatening the health and safety of Native American communities. The trafficking of dangerous and illegal drugs into their territories is leading to a second genocide. The overdose rate for Indigenous people is 42 percent higher than the national average. A recent bust on Montana’s Blackfeet Nation’s Tribal Reservation resulted in the seizure of more than 700,000 fentanyl pills, which was the largest bust in Montana history. Recently, the Blackfeet Nation had to declare a state of emergency after facing 17 overdoses in just one week. There are only 6.8 million Native Americans left in the world, which is 2 percent of the American population. We should be doing more to protect these proud and honorable people; they should not want for anything. People rush and give away resources to illegal immigrants, but totally disregard the Indigenous people of this land, as their race silently fades away into extinction. We must secure our borders and increase federal funding to Native American tribes so we can save this precious population. Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom has given billions of taxpayer dollars away to illegal immigrants and protected them from law enforcement, while arresting law-abiding Americans because they cannot afford to pay rent or mortgage, and the homeless shelters are unsafe, overcrowded, and have restrictions on who is allowed inside. He has also totally ignored the cartel problems on American lands. Clean air, water, land, and preserving our heritage are extremely important. We cannot just allow criminals to kill off the people who are native to this land and do nothing about it. Wars have been started over governments that tax citizens without representation. Taxation without representation is what led to the American Revolution. #RandolphHarris 28 of 31

Much like the land crisis in Las Vegas, we could also run out of land to farm and will not be able to grow or cultivate our own food. We can protect American farmland and support American farmers by buying American made beef, poultry, dairy, and produce. Also, country of origin labeling is very important so Americans can know where their food is coming from and can support American farmers and ranchers. As money flows, it influences further investment. Save the land that sustains us by protecting American farmland. Once the land is built on, we lose it forever. And in the future, there may be food wars. Also, to ensure that we have farmland and buildable land for future use, we need to start limiting the number of people allowed to immigrate to America. Perhaps with the immigrants we do allow into America, there needs to be a diversity program to make sure we have a population that equally represents all races of people. If Americans continue to spend money on American products, then more need to be made to keep up the inventory. When investors notice these goods are selling, it gives them the confidence to pour more money into that local business. It shows that people want these goods made in America and pressures investors to keep these goods and services in America. The jobs stay here, the business stays in America, wages naturally increase, and more money is invested to keep up with demand. This reduces the burden on the taxpayer. When you support American businesses, that money stays in our economy and can help to reduce the national debt. The government creates debt by borrowing from businesses in the private sector or from foreign countries. It also increases the national debt by spending more than it gains in tax revenue in a fiscal year. #RandolphHarris 29 of 31

When people shop locally, more tax money stays in the economy and goes to the government. This way, it keeps more money in our national economy and keeps more jobs located in America which also sends more taxes to the government, which can again help to reduce the national debt. When you buy foreign goods, these companies usually have lighter tax loads or exemptions, meaning less money for the national debt, plus you are helping to strengthen these foreign nations by sending more money overseas. Buying American-made products is also better for the environment and helps to reduce the carbon footprint because these products do not have to travel nearly as far. Furthermore, American companies and manufacturers are held to much higher standards on pollution. American companies must be more careful about air, land, and water pollution and have proper ways to dispose of waste. Under President Trump’s administration, he has make America a priority. President Trump has closed the southern border, illegal crossings have fallen to an all time low, and are 90 percent lower than under the previous administration. #RandolphHarris 30 of 31

We must think before we can understand the soul’s existence; we must understand before we can realize it. The earliest beginnings of thought, as apart from instinct, when it was itself still but a lurking tendency, belong far back in primeval time. The human intellect as we find it today, so rich and developed an instrument for the consciousness of the ego, did not arrive at this fullness without a series of graduated stages. We have had plenty of scientific thinking, business thinking, and political thinking long enough, but we have had very little inspired thinking. That is the world’s need. The intellect is cradled in selfishness but runs the evolutionary track into reason, where it will one day finish at the winning-post of selflessness. Then conquer we must, when our cause is just, and this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’ And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” #RandolphHarris 31 of 31

According to locals, over a century ago, the land that houses The Winchester Mansion had been vacant forever. Then, sometime in the early afternoon of Saturday, March 13, 1886, Sheriff Angel Camilio began getting reports that a massive castle made of wood had suddenly appeared. Gables rose, towers peaked into the sky as the mansion mushroomed into a labyrinth overnight.

The house’s sudden manifestation had been both disconcerting and fascinating to the community. Some felt dark curses flowing from the estate, and things moving around in the darkness. Others saw a fairytale castle glimmering in the spring sunlight. Perhaps this is why there are no records of construction, no blueprints, and no permits filed with the county. Come and see what secrets this so-called, “Winchester Mystery House” may hold.

Experience an unforgettable journey back to the time of kings and queens with this entry ticket for The Winchester Mansion in Santa Clara, California, which was the residence of Heiress Sarah L. Winchester. Take advantage of this fascinating experience. After the tour, there will be time to enjoy the mansion’s splendor at your own pace. You might even discover secret passages.

Building strong and lasting client relationships is crucial for a successful legal career. Many lawyers mistakenly believe that mastering legal skills alone ensures success, but law is fundamentally a service industry—our job is to solve problems through the time we sell. To build long-term relationships, attorneys must focus on three core elements: knowing their clients, understanding how their legal issues fit into a larger context, and consistently delivering exceptional service.

Lost Like Bats in the Daytime

When we face the apparent tragedies of sorrow, suffering, and death, we must put our trust in God. Tragedy sometimes comes like a thunderbolt. However, the enduring appeal of tragedy lies in its ability to connect us to something larger than ourselves. By confronting the darkest aspects of human existence, tragedy offers us a glimpse into the shared vulnerabilities and anxieties that bind us together. It reminds us that we are all susceptible to suffering, loss, and ultimately death. Yet, it also celebrates the human capacity for courage, resilience, and compassion in the face of adversity. Think about how tragic it was for Mrs. Sarah L. Winchester to suffer the death of her newborn daughter, and just a few short years later, the loss of her husband. Still, even while facing the deep sadness of such experiences, she found comfort in prayer. With the loss of her daughter and husband weighing so heavily upon her tender heart, she bravely battled with her grief and sought comfort in building the Winchester Mansion. Mrs. Winchester did not remain limited in her visions. Her eyes did not see but a few miles. With her heart, she built a magnificent palace to house all the spirits whose light had gone out in this life, as she was able to see beyond mortal limitations. Inside this fabulous mansion, the veil goes down, time ends, and distance fades and vanishes as we step into eternity, into a great world in which there are no earthly limitations. Mrs. Winchester enjoyed the pleasures of the imagination while constructing her home, as well as those of the senses. #RandolphHarris 1 of 31

She used her tragedy to reflect the highest pleasures of the understanding, the charming, varied pleasures of the imagination, and the vast pleasures of the senses. Mrs. Winchester’s mansion is proof that at no stage of her existence was she left without some pleasure. The fact that it was never completed over the 38 years of construction reflects eternity because eternity never ends, therefore, it is never completed. Tragedy challenges us to confront uncomfortable truths about ourselves and the world around us, and it ultimately affirms the enduring power of the human spirit. The world of everyday life is structured both spatially and temporally. The spatial structure is quite peripheral to our present considerations. Suffice it to point out that it, too, has a social dimension by virtue of the fact that my manipulatory zone intersects with that of others. More importantly, for our present purpose, is the temporal structure of everyday life. Temporarily is an intrinsic property of consciousness. The stream of consciousness is always ordered temporally. It is possible to differentiate between different levels of this temporality as it is intrasubjectively available. Every individual is conscious of an inner flow of time, which in turn is founded on the physiological rhythms of the organism, though it is not identical with these. It would greatly exceed the scope of these prolegomena to enter into a detailed analysis of these levels of intrasubjective temporality. As we have indicated, however, intersubjectivity in everyday life also has a temporal dimension. The world of everyday life has its own standard time, which is intersubjectively available. This standard of time may be understood as the intersection between cosmic time and its socially established calendar, based on the temporal sequences of nature, and inner time, in its afore-mentioned differentiations. There can never be full simultaneity between those various levels of temporality, as the experience of waiting indicates most clearly. #RandolphHarris 2 of 31

Both my organism and my society impose upon me, and upon my inner time, certain sequences of events that involve waiting. I may want to take part in a sports event, but I must wait for my bruised knee to heal. Or again, I must wait until certain papers are processed so that my qualification for the event may be officially established. It may readily be seen that the temporal structure of everyday life is exceedingly complex because the different levels of empirically present temporality must be ongoingly correlated. The temporal structure of everyday life confronts me as a facticity with which I must reckon, that is, with which I must try to synchronize my own projects. I encounter time in everyday reality as continuous and finite. All my existence in this world is continuously ordered by its time, and is indeed enveloped by it. My own life is an episode in the externally factitious stream of time. It was there before I was born, and it will be there after I die. The knowledge of my inevitable death makes this time finite for me. I have only a certain amount of time available for the realization of my projects, and the knowledge of this affects my attitude to these projects. Also, since I do not want to die, this knowledge injects an underlying anxiety into my projects. Thus, I cannot endlessly repeat my participation in sports events. I know that I am getting older. It may even be that this is the last occasion on which I have the chance to participate. My waiting will be anxious to the degree in which the finitude of time impinges upon the project. #RandolphHarris 3 of 31

The same temporal structure, as has already been indicated, is coercive. I cannot reverse at will the sequences imposed by it—“first things first” is an essential element of my knowledge of everyday life. Thus, I cannot take a certain examination before I have passed through certain educational programs, I cannot practice my profession before I have taken this examination, and so on. Also, the same temporal structure provides the historicity that determines my situation in the world of everyday life. I was born on a certain date, entered school on another, started working as a professional on another, and so on. These dates, however, are all “located” within a much more comprehensive history, and this “location” decisively shapes my situation. Thus, I was born in the year of the great bank crash, in which my father lost his wealth, I entered school just before the revolution, I began to work just after the great war broke out, and so forth. The temporal structure of everyday life not only imposes prearranged sequences upon the “agenda” of any single day but also imposes itself upon my biography as a whole. Within the co-ordinates set by this temporal structure, I apprehend both daily “agenda” and overall biography. Clock and calendar ensure that, indeed, I am a “man of my time.” Only within this temporal structure does everyday life retain for me its accent of reality. Thus, in cases where I may be “disoriented” for one reason or another (say, I have been in an automobile accident in which I was knocked unconscious), I feel an almost instinctive urge to “reorient” myself within the temporal structure of everyday life. I look at my watch and try to recall what day it is. By these acts alone, I re-enter the reality of everyday life. #RandolphHarris 4 of 31

So much easier to miss than to hit, to fall on one side or the other. And yet, if only I can get rid of what prevents me, I seem to be so made that I can do it. Then, I “take my time” when my time should be taken, permitting others to take their time too. I do not hurry them or me. When I am in a hurry, it takes longer, and my peace is lost. (This is probably why it took Mrs. Winchester 38 years to build her mansion, which is still incomplete.) Or as one young man said, “I feel that I am going 90 miles an hour inside and 5 miles an hour outside.” When I slow down, the inner speed decreases and the outer speed increases until they match. This is my subjective feeling. (When a small child seems to me to be dawdling and protests, “But I am hurrying,” he may be speaking the truth of himself.) Objectively (as I am seen by others) I have slowed down, may even seem “dull,” but although I “do” less, I accomplish more. I am in harmony with me, and whatever I do goes easily and well. I do not do all that I would like to do, but I do all that I can do (at any time). By limiting myself, I have the feeling of it, throughout my body and my mind, with all the worlds open to me? When I am bored, time slows down, and it accelerates when I am involved. It seems to me that this is true only when I am in the wrong place, where there are these either/ors. There is another place (or world) in which time changes differently: I am not bored. I am involved, and yet I am surprised at how much has got done, that a usual day’s work has taken only a few hours. I look at the clock and am astonished that so little time has passed. During those few hours, time has not seemed to be either fast or slow. Time and I have flown together, so how can I feel it moving or note its speed? It has neither got stuck nor run away from me. I can only be conscious of time when I am not living fully in the present. #RandolphHarris 5 of 31

This masterless slavery in which capitalism enmeshes the worker or the debtor is only debatable ethically as an institution. In principle, the personal conduct of those who participate, on either side of the rulers or of the ruled, is not morally debatable, as such conduct is essentially prescribed by objective situations. If they do not conform, they are threatened by economic bankruptcy, which would, in every respect, be useless. From our special point of view, where the increased fear of the world has led to a flight from occupational pursuits in the private economy, pietism not only turns into something differing in degree but into an element differing in quality. The study of the ego in psychoanalysis has hardly begun to account for the relationship of “inner agency” to social life. Men who share the concerns of an ethnic group, who are contemporaries in a historical era, or who compete and co-operate in economic pursuits are also guided by common images of good and evil. Infinitely varied, these images reflect the elusive nature of cultural differences and of historical change; in the form of contemporary social models, they assume decisive concreteness in every individual’s struggle for ego synthesis—and in every patient’s residence, ethnic background, and occupation are the first items to be radically altered when it is necessary to disguise his personal identity. The essence of the inner dynamics of a case, it is judged, is thereby left intact. The exact nature, then, of the values common to the patient’s background are considered to be so close to the “surface” that they are not necessarily of “psychoanalytic” interest. Contemporary social models are both clinically and theoretically relevant and cannot be shunted off by brief and patronizing tributes to the role “also” played by “social factors.” #RandolphHarris 6 of 31

The general neglect of these factors in psychoanalysis naturally has not furthered a rapprochement with the social sciences. Students of society and history, on the other hand, blithely continue to ignore the simple fact that all individuals are born by mothers; that everybody was once a child; that people and peoples begin in their nurseries; and that society consists of generations in the process of developing from children into parents, destined to absorb the historical changes of their lifetimes and to continue to make history for their descendants. Only psychoanalysis and social science together can eventually chart the course of individual life in the setting of a changing community. Ambitious steps in this direction have been made by eminent psychoanalysts, generally called neo-Freudians, who bypass the efforts of “ego psychology.” We were distressed when we saw ourselves caricatured in patients who, in social life, spread a compulsive attitude of mutual mental denuding under the guise of being alert to the defensive tricks of the ego. And we were dismayed when we saw our purpose of enlightenment perverted into a widespread fatalism, according to which man is nothing but a multiplication of his parents’ faults and an accumulation of his own earlier selves. We must grudgingly admit that even as we were trying to devise, with scientific determinism, a therapy for the few, we were led to promote an ethical disease among the many. The existence and the multiplicity of defensive regressive mechanisms in adolescence were systematically demonstrated in Anna Freud’s The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence. Her book defines inner defense in the widest sense; but it does not foreclose the psychoanalysis of adolescent development. When she states: “The abstract intellectual discussions and speculations in which young people delight are not genuine attempts at solving the tasks set by reality. Their mental activity is rather an indication of a tense alertness for the instinctual processes and the translation into the abstract thought of that which they perceive,” she presents the defensive half of the story of adolescent rumination, the other half being its adaptive functions, and its functions in the history of changing ideas. #RandolphHarris 7 of 31

There is a historical concomitance which teaches us how, in the period between puberty and adulthood, the resources of tradition fuse with new inner resources to create something potentially new: a new person; and with this new person, a new generation, and with that, a new era. The question of what happens to persons, generations, and eras because of guiding ideologies are of postadolescent origin, and are dedicated to the proposition that what we have learned as pathologists must become part of an ecology of the mind before we can take full responsibility for the ideological implications of our knowledge. We cannot even begin to encompass the human life cycle without learning to account for the fact that a human being under observation has grown stage by stage into a social world, always for the worse and for the better, has step by step prepared for him an outer reality made up of human traditions and institutions which utilize and thus nourish his developing capacities, attract and modulate his drives, respond to and delimit his fears and phantasies, and assign to him a position in life appropriate to his psychosocial powers. We cannot even begin to encompass a human being without indicating for each of the stages of his life cycle the framework of social influences and of traditional institutions which determine his perspectives on his more infantile past and on his more adult future. In this sense, we can learn from patients only to the extent that we realize (and the patient realizes) that what is said and done in treatment is based on a formal contract between healer and patient and must be carefully transposed before being applied to the general human condition. This is the reason why the fragments of case histories or psychoanalytic interpretations which flutter around in increasing numbers in our newspapers and magazines seem lost like bats in the daytime. #RandolphHarris 8 of 31

On the other hand, we cannot leave history entirely to nonclinical observers and to professional historians who often all too nobly immerse themselves into the very disguises, rationalizations, and idealizations of this historical process from which it should be their business to separate themselves. Only when the relation of historical forces to the basic functions and stages of the mind has been jointly charted and understood can we begin a psychoanalytic critique of society as such without falling back into mystical or moralistic philosophizing. Dr. Siegmund Freud warned against the possible misuse of his work as an ideology, a “Weltanschauung;” but a man who inspires new ideas has little power to restrict them to the area of his original intentions. And Dr. Freud did not refrain from interpreting other total approaches to man’s condition, such as religion, as consequences of man’s inability to shake off the bonds of his prolonged childhood, and thus, comparable to collective neuroses. The psychological and historical study of the religious crisis of a young great man renews the opportunity to review this assertion in the light of ego-psychology and of theories of psychosocial development. There are four consequences of self-contempt. The first is the compulsive need of certain neurotic types to compare themselves with everybody whom they come in contact, and to their own disadvantage. The other fellow is more impressive, better informed, more interesting, more attractive, better dressed; he has the advantage of age or youth, of a better position, of greater importance. However, even though the comparisons may strike the neurotic himself as lopsided, he does not think them through clearly; of if he does, the feeling of comparative interiority still remains. The comparisons made are not only unfair to himself; they often do not make any sense. Why should an older man who could be proud of his own accomplishments compare himself with a youngster who is a better dancer? Or why should somebody who has never been interested in music feel inferior to musicians? #RandolphHarris 9 of 31

The practice makes sense, however, when we remember the unconscious claims to be superior to others in every regard. We must add here that the neurotic’s pride also demands that he should be superior to everybody and everything. Then, of course, any “superior” skill or quality of others must be disturbing, and must call forth a self-destructive berating. Sometimes the connection operates in reverse: the neurotic, already in a self-berating frame of mind, utilizes the “shining” qualities of others, as he encounters them, to reinforce and buttress his castigating self-criticism. To express it in terms of two people: it is as if an ambitious and sadistic mother used the better marks or cleaner fingernails of Leo’s friend to put Leo to shame. It is insufficient to describe these processes simply as a recoiling from competition. The recoiling from competition in these instances is rather the result of self-disparagement. A second consequence of self-contempt is vulnerability in human relations. Self-contempt makes the neurotic hypersensitive to criticism and rejection. On little or no provocation, he feels that others look down on him, do not take him seriously, do not care for his company, and in fact slight him. His self-contempt adds considerably to the profound uncertainty he has about himself, and hence cannot but make him as profoundly uncertain about the attitudes of others toward him. Being unable to accept himself as he is, he cannot possibly believe that others, knowing him with all his shortcomings, can accept him in a friendly or appreciative spirit. What he feels in deeper layers is much more drastic, and may amount to an unshakable conviction that others plainly despise him. And such a conviction may live in him, although he is not consciously aware of even a trace of self-contempt. Both of these factors—the blind assumption that others despise him and a relative or total awareness of his own self-contempt—point to the fact that the bulk of self-contempt is externalized. This may lead to a subtle poisoning of all his human relations. He may become unable to take any positive feelings of others at their face values. A compliment may, in his mind, register as a sarcastic comment; an expression of sympathy as condescending pity. Somebody wants to see him—it is because he wants something from him. Others express a liking for him—it can only be because they do not know him well, because they themselves are worthless or “neurotic,” or because he has been or could be useful to them. #RandolphHarris 10 of 31

Similarly, incidents which in fact have no hostile meaning are interpreted as evidence of an existing contempt. Somebody has not greeted him on the street or in the theater, has not accepted his invitation, or has not replied right away—it can only be a slight. Somebody makes a good-natured joke about him—it is a clear intent to humiliate him. An objection to, or a criticism of, some suggestion or activity of his does not constitute an honest criticism of the particular activity, et cetera, but becomes evidence of the other’s despising him. The person himself, as we see in analysis, is either unaware of his experiencing his relations with others in this way, or he is unaware of the distortions involved. In the latter case, he may take it for granted that others’ attitudes toward him are really of this sort, and even pride himself on being “realistic.” In the analytic relationship, we can observe to what extent a patient can take it for granted that others look down on him. After much analytic work is done, and the patient is apparently on good friendly terms with his analyst, he may mention casually and without affection that it was also so self-evident to him that the analyst was looking down on him that he did not feel it necessary to mention it or to give it any extended thought. All of these distorted perceptions in human relations are understandable because the attitudes of others are indeed open to several interpretations, particularly when torn out of context, while the externalized self-contempt feels unmistakably real. Also, the self-protective character of such a shift in responsibility is evident. If possible, at all, it is probably intolerable to live with a constantly awake, sharp self-contempt. The neurotic has an unconscious interest in regarding others as the offenders. Although it is painful for him, as it would be for anybody, to feel slighted and rejected, it is less painful than coming face to face within his own self-contempt. It is a long and hard lesson for anybody to learn that others can neither hurt nor establish self-esteem. #RandolphHarris 11 of 31

The vulnerability in human relations caused by self-contempt combines with that brought about by neurotic pride. It is often difficult to say whether a person feels humiliated because something has hurt his pride or because he has externalized his self-contempt. They are so inseparably interwoven that we must tackle such reactions from both angles. Of course, at a given time, one or the other aspect will be the more easily observable and the more accessible. If a person reacts to a seeming disregard with vindictive arrogance, hurt pride is uppermost in the picture. If, as a result of the same provocation, he turns abject and tries to ingratiate himself, as self-contempt sticks out most clearly. However, in either case, the reverse aspect is also operating and should be kept in mind. Thirdly, a person in the clutches of self-contempt often takes too much abuse from others. He may not even recognize a flagrant abuse, whether it be humiliation or exploitation. Even if indignant friends call it to his attention, he tends to minimize or justify the offender’s behavior. This occurs only under certain conditions, such as in a morbid dependency, and is the outcome of a complicated inner constellation. However, essential among the factors producing it is the defenselessness produced by the person’s conviction that he does not deserve any better treatment. For instance, a woman whose husband is flaunting his affairs with other women may be unable to complain or even to feel conscious resentment because she feels unlovable and regards most other women as more attractive. A last consequence to be mentioned is the need to alleviate or balance self-contempt with the attention, regard, appreciation, or love of others. The pursuit of such attention is compulsive because of the compelling need not to be at the mercy of self-contempt. It is also determined by a need to triumph, and may amount to an all-consuming life goal. The result is a total dependence on others for self-evaluation: it rises or falls with the attitudes of others toward him. #RandolphHarris 12 of 31

Thinking along the broader theoretical lines, observations like these help us to understand better why the neurotic clings so tenaciously to the glorified version of himself. He must maintain it because he feels only one alternative: to succumb to the terror of self-contempt. There is thus a vicious circle operating between pride and self-contempt, one always reinforcing the other. This can change only to the extent that he gets interested in the truth about himself. However, again, self-contempt renders it difficult to find himself. As long as his degraded image of himself is real to him, his self appears despicable. Alienation is the name that Dr. Hegel gives to the condition that arises from the experience of the failure of personhood as a conception of the self. When the predominant conception of what it means to be a self fails to capture those elements of my constitution that are essential to my own self-understanding, alienation arises. Intersubjective relations are alienating when others strive to recognize me according to that incomplete and flawed conception of the self. There are several indicators of self-alienation that a person can look for in self or in others: The general capacity for conscious experience is impaired. The person is living “as if in a fog. Nothing is clear to them. Not only their own thoughts and feelings but also other people, and the implications of a situation, are hazy.” There may be a decrease in awareness or concern for the body, for its needs and feelings, or for material possessions such as a house, car, or clothing. There is a loss of the feeling of being an active, determining force in one’s own life. There are a few factors that are responsible for the process of self-alienation which include: The development of compulsive solutions to neurotic conflicts, such as striving for affection, detachment from others, or chronic hostility to others. Active moves away from the real self, such as the drive for glory and striving to live up to an impossible self-ideal. Active moves against the real self, as in self-hate or self-destruction. #RandolphHarris 13 of 31

The consequence of alienation from the self is that the person’s relation to himself has become impersonal. More specifically, in the self-alienated person, pride governs feelings—the individual does not react with spontaneous emotion. Instead, the person feels what he or she should feel. Further, the self-alienated person does not feel in possession of his or her own energies; the person’s powers are not his or her own. Another consequence of self-alienation is an impairment in the ability to assume responsibility for the self. The self-alienated person is lacking in plain, simple honesty about self and his or her life. The lack of honesty manifests itself as an inability to recognize oneself as one really is, without minimizing or exaggerating, an unwillingness to accept the consequences of one’s actions and decisions, and an unwillingness to realize it is up to oneself to do something about one’s difficulties. Self-alienated persons insist that others, fate, or time will solve these difficulties for them. Self-alienation means, basically, that a person is not choosing action by consulting all components of the real self, such as needs and values; instead, the person serves as some part of the real self. However, if the total self is not the source of direction for the individual’s behavior, what is? Dr. Riesmen’s concept of the “inner-directed character” is an excellent illustration of persons whose behavior expresses the dictates of conscience and self-ideal rather than the real self. When choices for action arise, such persons experience a conflict between what they really want to do and what they believe they ought to do. Implicitly, such persons believe that real selves are unreliable guides to conduct, and so they repress them. The consequence of ignoring the real self in favor of a rigid conscience is that these persons may behave in a moral and exemplary fashion, but their real needs are ignored, and they will be perpetually thwarted. #RandolphHarris 14 of 31

The “authoritarian character” is a person who seeks some authority figure to direct his or her conduct. These persons strive to discern what behavior the authority figure expects of them, and they hasten to comply. If there is any conflict between their own wishes and the demands of authority, they habitually suppress their wishes and compulsively comply with the authority’s wishes. Indeed, they experience their real selves as evil or weak, not worth considering. Dr. Fromm interprets the manner in which authoritarian characters perceive authority as a byproduct of real-self repression, followed by a projection to the authority figure of all of one’s own repressed “powers.” Hence, authoritarian characters perceive themselves as weak and the leader as all-powerful and possessing unusual strength and wisdom—the “charismatic” leader. Dr. Riesman’s concept, the “other-directed” character, describes an individual who allows the wishes and expectations of social peers to direct personal actions. The other-directed character becomes sensitized to others’ wishes and actively seeks to comply with them. The result may be popularity and acceptance, but it is purchased at the cost of knowledge of the real self and of thwarting many basic needs. Dr. Riesman’s concept, the “other-directed” character, describes an individual who allows the wishes and expectations of social powers to direct personal actions. The other-directed character becomes sensitized to others’ wishes and actively seeks to comply with them. The result may be popularity and acceptance, but it is purchased at the cost of knowledge of the real self and of thwarting many basic needs. Impulses and emotions are a part of the real self, just as are will and ideals. Everyone has to struggle to reconcile the conflicting demands of impulses, ideals, and the expectations of other people. #RandolphHarris 15 of 31

An impulse-directed person is one who habitually ignores all demands upon behavior save those imposed by personal impulses and feelings. This person ignores the conscience, the rights of other people, even his or her own long-range welfare and growth. All is subordinated to the immediate expression of the feelings. Psychoanalysts refer to such individuals as “instinct-ridden” characterss; they idealize and rationalize their drives and emotions because they cannot voluntarily control them. They are like adult children who have evaded growth. The goal is to get the patient “out of his script” during his treatment hours so he will behave like a real person, called colloquially, “a card-carrying member of the human race.” The chief difficulty to be overcome is the pull of the script, something like the “Id resistance” of Dr. Freud. The unconscious, instinctual forces that oppose the therapeutic process often manifest as the patient’s compulsion to repeat unhealthy patterns rather than explore them. The “resistance” is driven by the id’s fundamental nature to satisfy innate desires and impulses, such as urges for pleasures of the flesh and aggressive urges, and the inherent pleasure principle of immediate gratification. It opposes the ego’s efforts and the superego’s moral constraints by clinging to the “disease” or symptom. Professional patients adopt that role because they decided when they were very young, with encouragement from their parents, to be mental cripples, and may have been helped along by their previous therapists. This is usually a family script, and the brothers and sisters and parents may also be in treatment. A typical example is where a brother or sister is in a psychiatric hospital, where he or she continually “acts out” (as the staff calls it), or “acts crazy,” as Jeff now learns to call it. Jeff is a little huffy, and will soon say quite frankly that he is jealous of his brother or sister, because he or she is in a hospital while Jeff must be contented without-patient therapy. As one man put it, “How come my brother is in a nice plushy mental hospital on the East Coast while I have to be contented with this lousy little therapy group? I was enjoying it much more when I was a professional patient.” #RandolphHarris 16 of 31

While such things are said jokingly, they are the core of the resistance against getting well. First of all, Jeff is losing all the advantages of being in a hospital and all the fun of acting crazy. However, more than that, he says quite frankly (after he begins to understand his script), his Child is scared to get well and cannot accept the permission offered by the therapist and the other group members to do so, because if he does, his mother (in his head) will desert him. No matter how miserable he is with all his fears, anxieties, obsessions, and physical symptoms, he is still better off, he thinks, than being out in the world on his own without his Parent to protect him. At this point, there is a phase where script analysis becomes almost indistinguishable from psychanalytic probing. The protocol of his script becomes the subject of investigation, and the early influences which led him to decide on a not-O.K. position and way of life come under scrutiny. Here is pride at being a neurotic, a paranoid schizophrenic, an addict, or a criminal will begin to emerge, and he may bring in his diary or talk about his plans for writing an autobiography, as so many of his predecessors have done. Even people who are cured of “mental retardation” may have some nostalgia for their previous condition. People who are mentally healthy often do not know what they think or how they really feel until they have a chance to express themselves and to hear themselves and then decide whether that is actually what they believe. Sometimes just saying something aloud to another person is enough to make one realize that they do not fully believe what they have said—which frees them to change their minds. If you do not try to make every disagreement into a federal case, speaking your mind is important and helpful. People do not have to agree on everything. #RandolphHarris 17 of 31

People always think that they understand themselves, and they always think that they are being honest with themselves, and then later, after something happens and they see themselves differently, they can see how wrong they were. One can kid about how they feel until it hurts too much to go on pretending. Like you might walk with a Lego in your shoe, but sooner or later it would hurt too much and one would have to stop walking and get rid of it. Where there is gathered a sufficient number of facts on which to base a reasonably correct decision, it is still possible that one or more fact, of an importance outweighing all the others, could induce a man’s mind to alter the decision. The order of his thoughts may be perfectly logical yet the truth of them may be largely absent. For the premises with which they start may be ready-made theories, the facts upon which they rest may be less important than those which they ignore, and personal factors may have unconsciously accepted the one and chosen the other. Just as mysticism may give the dangerous illusion that it is dealing with reality when it is not, so logic may give the equally dangerous illusion that it is dealing with truth when it too is not doing so. To call a man a “philosopher” when he is only a mere logician is to demean the word. Logic is a useful tool, for certain limited purposes, but it can as easily lead a man into great error as into great wisdom. Let them not mistake exercises in logic for penetration into truth. Logic is always beset by the serious charge that its so-called truths are fallacious ones. For instance, it insists on the law of contradiction, the law which says that a statement of facts cannot be true and false at the same time. However, the careful study of illusions produces conclusions which falsify this law. We do not mean by this criticism to declare logic to be useless. We mean only that it is a good servant but a bad master. If our original assumptions are wrong, then the irony is that the more logically we travel from them to our conclusions, the more distantly we travel from truth. You can have sacred, revelatory, profoundly instructive experience with the Lord in the most miserable experiences of your life—in the worst settings, while enduring the most painful injustices, when facing the most insurmountable odds and opposition you have ever faced. #RandolphHarris 18 of 31

Heroes and heroines are archetypal in that they emanate and embody an immediate, recognizable pattern. Humans know one when they see one. The hero can be seen as the central human archetype of transformation for wholeness. The transformation comes through the hero’s own journey. Like the magical threshold, the sphere of rebirth, the awakening to the flow of forces, and the creation of wakefulness to dissolve the unconscious into timelessness, the hero emerges. Although talk of improving health and fitness is nothing new to emergency response providers, there are signs that it has now been moved to the front burner. As a result of the unacceptable number of line-of-duty deaths every year, movements have come from different directions to ensure that health and fitness standards are developed that apply to what these heroes do. Some argue that firefighting is a strenuous job, and that sudden cardiac arrest is just the cost of doing business. If that were really true, we would see the same trend of fatalities in other physical occupations, such as professional sports. Although professional athletes have to try out each year and firefighters tend to have a longer career, not many active athletes die from overexertion. When a professional team invests a significant amount of money in a player, they insure their investment through proper diet, physical training, and medical observation. Although the award-winning Sacramento Fire Department does not get as much attention or money as an NFL star, they still have a physically demanding job. As the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1583, Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Fighters, explains, firefighters need “to be medically and physically fit in order to perform the required tasks. #RandolphHarris 19 of 31

In every city, there seems to be one place or street where everything seems to happen. In Sacramento, California, one particular block of Capitol Avenue seems to be that place. Just a sampling of events in less than twenty years reveals several major fires, gang activity, drug dealing, mail theft, threats, over sixty-six deaths, animal attacks, stalking, many instances unlawful entries, a few missing persons cases, shootings, hit and run accidents, sexual assaults, felony assault, theft and vandalisms, financial crimes, and miraculous rescues. The amount of death and destruction that happened in just this one block area of the city is unparalleled in the community’s history. Upon one occasion, a night watchman discovered a fire burning. The fire department came quickly, but the blaze had spread to two adjoining buildings. The fire department, however, was able to prevent the massive blaze and stop the spread to the rest of the street. Despite the roaring fire, there were no deaths or injuries. Compared to automobiles, fire apparatus and ambulances do not provide the amount of protection you would expect. Much of the engineering designated to automobile design is related to either fuel efficiency or meeting federal crash standards. In contrast, custom emergency vehicles are engineered more to function and aesthetics. For instance, a modern sports utility vehicle (SUV) with three rows of seats might safely transport seven people. Lap and shoulder seat belts are in every riding position, and side curtain airbags protect the driver and passengers in an intersection crash. Padded seat backs and cushioned door liners assist in containing passengers in the event of a rollover. Compare that to a Type III ambulance with the same wheelbase. It may have lap and shoulder belts for the two front seats and the captain’s chair, yet only provide lab belts for the other bench positions, which are positioned perpendicular to the direction of travel. Although it may be capable of transporting seven occupants, very little restraint protection is provided. Now factor in that some of the occupants in the back will be providing patient care and might not be restrained at all. By the 1980s, most “impaling hazards” had been removed from the dashboards of automobiles, replaced with flush-mount knobs and rounded corners on the dash. Take a look in the back of the ambulance. How many sharp corners, after-market interior modifications, or potential missiles are present during patient transport? Some ambulances do a good job of securing the sharps container for contaminated needles, yet the container has an open top or nonlatching lid. A rollover could pepper the back of the ambulance with poisoned darts.

A single person making an income above $100,000 is now considered low-income in five counties in California. This distinction now applies to individuals living in Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, and Marin counties. In 37 percent of counties, a family of four living on a six-figure income is now considered low-income. In fact, Governor Gavin Newsom of Democratic controlled California, brags about being the world’s “fifth largest economy,” but it also facing a $12 billion deficit, looking to cut $747 million for state worker’s pay, pushing to keep medical insurance for illegal immigrants, but wants to cut medical for anyone who has assets over $2,000 and the state has the largest homeless population in the nation. If they are all officially counted, California has approximately 4 million homeless people. The highest home prices in the nation, the highest taxes, and the most unfriendly business regulations known to man. The average home price in California is nearly $1,000,000.00 USD, while the average salary is $96,036.00, meaning that most Californians cannot even afford to buy a home. California is having an affordability crisis. This is caused by nearly half a century-old laws that discourage home sales and encourage higher rents. #RandolphHarris 22 of 31

Meanwhile, China, where we are sending all our jobs and money, has more than 50 ghost cities, with 65 million vacant homes. Ghost cities are regions will housing has been overdeveloped to the point that these places are uninhabited. Intel is cutting 15,000 jobs, PayPal 2,500, and Meta has terminated 4,000 employees. Having the Southern American border open and not having American farmland protected, not producing beef, poultry, fish, fruit, produce and dairy in America, and without American goods and services being our number one manufactured and selling items, America has created a dangerous and significantly elevated risks to national security, national economic security, and national public health. Some people may believe that these claims are overstated, but by not routinely monitoring Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CEVs) or other security-relevant alerts, such as the end-of-life of machinery is how the Oroville Dam Crisis occurred in 2017. #RandolphHarris 23 of 31

As we see gangs fighting with federal law enforcement, states and cities refusing to honor federal laws, and politicians showing an utter disregard for the Constitution of the United States of America, anarchy is becoming increasingly common. #RandolphHarris 24 of 31

#RandolphHarris 26 of 31

Home prices in Sacramento County are rivaling the Bay Area. Historically, homes in the Bay Area have been more expensive because they have higher-paying jobs, a larger population, and the Bay Area is a tourist destination. Contributing to the housing affordability crisis is Gavin Newsom, who has been lavishing illegal immigrants with taxpayer-funded resources and cash aid. The State of California has a budget deficit of $12 billion because Governor Gavin Newsom granted 700,000 illegal immigrants free health care, which costs taxpayers $3 billion annually. At the same time, Newsom cut vital programs for veterans, school children, the disabled, and the homeless. To further highlight this illustration, Mexico has been causing one of America’s worst environmental disasters. Fifty million gallons a day of industrial chemicals, untreated sewage, and trash flow from Tijuana, Mexico, into southern San Diego County daily. This toxic waste has been turning up on Imperial Beach and is causing the miles of white sands to become polluted and the ocean breeze to smell of poop, which has been sickening residents and wildlife and costing San Diego millions in the form of lost tourism and health problems. The problem has been going on for more than a century.

Moreover, please remember to respect law and order and treat your elders with the utmost dignity and kindness possible. And take your education seriously so that you will be successful in life and make your family proud. #RandolphHarris 30 of 31

As you can see, President Donald Trump and his pledge to “Make America Great Again” is exactly what America needs to save the country and the American people. As of 31 August 2025, President Trump has brought $8 Billion in Tariff revenue into America and hundreds of thousands of new jobs. However, if President Trump’s Tariffs are deemed illegal by the Supreme Court, taxpayers will have to pay back trillions and trillions of dollars. And yes, diversity is important, so you can see why it is also important to preserve blonde hair and blue eyes, as the people with these characteristics are becoming a minority in America. As a reminder, parents, please teach your children to love America and be patriotic citizens, and to buy goods and services made in America. It is also important to respect law and order and treat your elders with respect.

Randy advises clients with regard to business transition, taxable and tax-deferred mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, restructuring, integrated tax planning, federal and state tax controversy resolution, and real estate transactions. Trust is the cornerstone of any client relationship. Ultimately, my clients feel they are in capable hands with someone who genuinely understands their problems and goals. https://www.jmbm.com/l-randolph-harris.html
