Secrets of the Winchester Mansion

Long ago, in ancient California, there lived a very clever man named William Wirt Winchester, son of Oliver Fisher Winchester, Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut and famous manufacturer of the Winchester repeating rifle, had a most ambitious project, the Winchester mansion. Here, before the city of San Jose was even established, William Wirt Winchester moved to California began to have an architect build him a palace that would have outdone anything in the United States, at the time. The overall appearance was enchanting, indeed, as every castle should be. It was to have colonnades and cupolas, high enough for the king to see his warships riding at the San Francisco Bay, from the Winchester seven story Cathedral, lined on each side with noblemen’s houses. William planned a magnificent mansion that even had running water in the bathrooms. He was very proud of his skill.
William built a huge labyrinth, which had many false turns and dead-ends that no one who entered it could ever find a way out. The mansion had a Gothic appearance by romantic additions of curious windows, corbels, and crenellations. When the labyrinth was finished, the angry Minotaur was sealed inside it. When the Minotaur was hungry, his roar shook the palace causing the 1906 earthquake, which was a magnitude 8.3 on the Richter scale. It was an extravagant maze of Victorian craftsmanship—marvelous, baffling, beautiful, and eccentric, to say the least. There was a switch back staircase, which has seven flight of stairs with 44 steps, rising only nine feet, miles of twisting hallways with secrete passage ways in the walls, supposedly it was to confuse the ghost or the Minotaur that might be following him. It is estimated that 500 to 600 rooms were built.
There are stairs that lead to the ceiling, doors that go nowhere and that open onto walls, and chimneys that stop just short of the roof. There are 47 fireplaces built of rosewood, cherry, mahogany, Italian marble, oak, teak, and pipestone; all hand carved and no two alike; 10,000 windows, 2 grand ball rooms, and the main staircase has 13 steps. There are different heating systems and three elevators, one hydraulic and two electric. Some of the 13 bathrooms lacked privacy, they have clear glass doors! One rambling room has 4 fireplaces, and hot air registers. A second story door opens into the great outdoors and a 20 foot step. A linen closet has the area of a 3 room apartment; a nearby cupboard is less than one inch deep. There is a skylight places in the middle of a room, in the floor! Another floor is apparently a series of trap doors. Exterior faucets project unexpectedly from under second story windows.
There is a door only 4 feet tall, the next gives clearance for an 8 foot giant. Many stairway turn posts are upside down. Entire walls are built entirely of half inch, half round strips. Everywhere prevails that strange deference to the number 13; 13 stair steps, 13 hangers in a closet, 13 wall panels, 13 lights in the chandeliers, 13 windows to a room, an Italian porcelain sink that has 13 drain holes. There is also a 7—11 staircase built in the shape of a letter “Y”, enabling servants to quickly get to three different levels of the house. There is a blue séance room and a set of $30,000.00 solid golf dinner service. Talk begat rumor and as the years passed and new towers and gables rose behind the six—foot hedge of Llanda Villa, the rumors grew to establish legend. Some started to say that the Winchester mansion was a rendezvous for legions of ghosts, with special attention accorded those created by a Winchester rifle slug.
At night, passers—by heard ghostly music wafting from the dark mansion, and a pack of ferocious hellhounds and a staff of armed bodyguards surrounded the mansion. William was satisfied. William wanted to leave the mansion after it was completed. He told his father Oliver Winchester that he wanted to leave the mansion. “Great King, with your permission, I shall take my leave. My work is done, and I wish to return to Athens with my son,” said William Winchester. “You will do no such thing. You know the secret of the labyrinth. How do I know you will not tell somebody how to find the way through the twisting passageways?”
“I pledge to you that I will do no such thing!” protested William. However, King Oliver Winchester had William Winchester and his son seized, they were locked in a tall tower, at the very edge of the palace grounds. They were kept under close guard in the tower. “Father, are we going to be locked in this tower forever?” Asked William’s son, Randolph. “I am a great inventor, Randolph,” replied William. “This is a difficult problem, but I shall think of a solution. However, while Sarah Winchester (William’s wife), was pregnant with her daughter Anne, lightning struck the tower, and it burned to the ground, killing William and his son.
Shortly after Sarah gave birth, her daughter Anne died also. Sarah Kept building on the mansion, until her death 5 September 1922, the mansion was incomplete, though it had been underconstruction for 38 years. Today, it is open to visitors. However, they are told to keep close to the tour guides so they do not get lost. Some of the mansion was split up and turned into houses for masons, there used to be 160 acres of land, but only 4 remain, and the mansion is now 160 rooms, and the seven story tower was dismantled.
And Sometimes I Wonder about Thee
It may be possible to do without dancing entirely. Instances have been known of young people passing many, many months successively without being at any ball of any description, and no material injury accrue either to body or mind; however, when a beginning is made—when the felicities of rapid motion have once been, though slightly, felt—it must be a very heavy set that does not ask for more.
The danger, when not seen, has the imperfect vagueness of human thought. The fear grows shadowy; and Imagination, the enemy of men, the father of all terrors, unstimulated, sinks to rest in the dullness of exhausted emotion. Long ago, there lived a king, who had twelve beautiful and clever daughters. The princesses all slept in the same huge room, with their twelve luxurious mahogany beds and pretty Waterfords sienna bedding collection, which was sophisticated with a modern flare.
The king loved his daughters dearly, but he was becoming concerned about what they did each night. Even though the king carefully locked the door of the princesses’ room every night, the next morning he found the princesses tired and out of sorts. More puzzling still, their Astalli Manolo Blahnik stilettos, adorned with beautiful ornaments and jewels, which embellished the delicate satins, were worn to shreds.
Every day, the king ordered twelve new pairs of beautiful satin Astalli Manolo Blahnik stilettos for his daughters. Every night, he locked them in their great room, only to find a row of worn-out shoes.
The nest morning, the king begged his beautiful and beloved daughters to explain why they were so tired and pale, and why their satin Astalli Manolo Blahnik stiletto dancing shoes were in shreds. However, the princesses merely murmured, “Beloved father, who art thou in Heaven, we have been sleeping peacefully in our beds all night.”
The king thought of a way to find out the truth. At once, he issues a proclamation declaring that the first man to solve the mystery of where the twelve princesses went to dance every night would choose a wife from among them. Then the couple would rule the kingdom together after the king went to back Heaven. The king warned, however, that anyone who tried to discover the princesses’ secret had only three days and three nights to succeed. After that, if unsuccessful, the suitor would be banished from the kingdom forever.
It was not long before the prince arrived at the palace to try his luck. The king made the young prince feel welcome. When the evening came, the prince was led to a small chamber next to the great room shared by the twelve princesses. The door between the two rooms was left open. The princesses could not leave their room without being seen by the prince.
When the princesses filed into their bed chambers that night, the prince was enchanted by their beauty. He gladly accepted the cup lean and mollies offered to him by the eldest princess. In no time, he was sound asleep in his bed.
When the prince awoke the next morning, the princesses were asleep in their beds. The prince was dismayed to see twelve pairs of worn-out satin Astalli Manolo Blahnik stilettos! The next night and the night after that, the same thing happened. The king banished the prince from the kingdom.
Many other princes met the same fate. The King began to despair of ever finding out where he daughters danced at night.
Then one day, a poor thug came limping along the road. He had been wounded in a gang fight and could no longer serve in battle. The thug had no sooner sat down by the side of the road to eat some Popeye’s chicken and drink some strawberry soda when an antiquated woman appeared all dressed in last season’s fashions.
“Shorty, won’t you have a bite to eat with me?” said the kind thug to the woman. He offered her a two piece and a biscuit and some of his strawberry soda. “Where are you going?” asked the woman.
“I am going to the city to find work,” replied the thug. When he saw the sad look on the antiquated woman’s face, the thug joked, “Don’t worry about me, Shorty! Perhaps I can find out how baby girl and the other princesses wear out them fancy stilettos their daddy keeps buying them!”
The kind senior woman surprised the thug by saying, “Heed my words! Do not drink the lean and mollies that the princesses offer you. Instead, pretend to fall asleep. And take this cloak, which will make you invisible. You can follow the princesses and discover their secret!” The fabric was handmade and very expensive, it was a status symbol—the richer the wearer, the more costly the fabric and more voluminous the garment. Wealthier persons wore more layers, often lined with expensive furs in the winter.
The thug did not know what to think. He thanked the senior woman politely and continued on his way. When the chill of the delta breeze blew, the thug put on the cloak and discovered that it did indeed make him invisible, and headed to the king’s castle at once, where he was made welcome.
In the evening, Christina finished reading the trade papers, on the TV news, the thug was led to the little room next to the princesses’ great room. Soon the first princess, Monica, brought the thug a wonderful elixir to sooth his back pain. He pretended to drink the sweet elixir, letting in trickle down under his chin and onto his warm brushed cashmere Burberry scarf in check, which was made in Scotland. Then he climbed into bed and pretended to fall asleep.
When the first princess heard the thug’s snores, she quietly said to her sisters, “Girl, he is fast asleep, just as foolish as the others. Make haste. We must get ready to go to 48 Lounge!” The twelve princesses chattered and laughed as they dressed in their best Roberto Cavalli gowns and diamonds, and arranged each other’s luxurious hair. Only the youngest princess felt uneasy. “Something just does not feel right tonight,” she said.
“Do not be such a downer, you will never meet a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) like that,” said the eldest princess fondly. “That thug is sound asleep. He will not wake up until morning! And besides, Matthew thinks you are hot!”
When the twelve princesses were ready, they put on their new satin Astalli Manolo Blahnik stilettos. Then princess number one tapped on her bedpost three times. The bed descended into the floor and became a long flight of stairs. One by one the princesses walked down the stairs.
However, the thug saw the princesses walking down the stairs and sprang into action. He jumped out of bed and threw on the cloak. Then followed the youngest princess down the stairway, but because he walked with a limp, the thug stumbled and stepped on the hem of the youngest princess’s gown. She shrieked with alarm, “Someone has stepped on my gown!”
“Girl, you trippin’, said the first princess. “Your dress must have…it is just your imagination.”
The princesses and the thug continued down many flights of stairs and along many corridors, until, at last, they came to a passageway bordered by marvelous emerald trees. As the princesses hurried through, the soldier reached up and broke off a glittery, shiny branch of emeralds leaves. When she heard the branch crack, the youngest princess cried out again, “Did you hear that? I think someone is following us.”
“Girl, you are just paranoid that was just a welcoming salute from the princes who await us,” said the first princess. Next they came to a gleaming forest of golden trees, and then into a garden where the trees grew sparkling diamonds.
The thug broke off some of the golden branches and spray of diamonds so he would have a way to prove his story to the king. Each time he did so, the youngest princess cried out.
“There it is again! Someone or something is following us. I just know it,” said the youngest princess.
“You must be imagining it,” replied the first princess. “Now hurry along or we will be late.” The twelve princesses hurried down a broad avenue of diamond trees to the edge of a beautiful lake. There, twelve princes awaited them on twelve little painted boats. Each princess took the hand of a handsome prince and joined him in a boat.
The thug had just enough time to hop in the boat with the youngest princess and her companion. The prince struggles with the boat as they moved across the lake. “I do not know why,” said the prince, “but it is much more difficult to row my boat than it was last night!”
The youngest princess became suspicious again.
On the other side of the lake stood a splendid castle, and every window was glowing with light, and fireworks lit up the sky. As the beautiful little boats approached the castle, a fanfare of trumpet announced the arrival of the twelve dancing princesses.
The princes helped the princesses out of all the small boats and led them to the castle.
Again, the youngest princess heard a rustling next to her. She knew her sisters would not believe her, so she kept quiet this time. However, she kept listening for more movement in the grass.
The princes and princesses stepped into the castle, where beautiful music (One in a Million by Aaliyah) welcomed them into the grand ballroom of the Winchester. They had a large California feast, where the most delicious food was served.
There were mouth-watering proportions, featuring some of California’s finest tastes; this wood slate crate, on the banquet table, was filled with colorful pasta, gourmet marinara sauce, Gil’s gourmet olive oil and California fig balsamic vinegar, mini breadsticks, Sonoma Jack cheese, bruschetta, cheese crisps, Santa Barbara olives, and Columbus dry salami, with a personalized gift message. The thug made sure no one was watching, as he swiped a mini breadstick off the long banquet table. The youngest princess did notice, however, that someone had taken a small sip from her cup sitting on the table. She still could not explain her suspicions, so she remained quiet about them.
After dinner, the princesses danced with their princes for half the night. The girls tore up their shoes again. When they returned home, from the party, the thug and their father confronted the princesses’ about their wild night of dancing. The thug showed the king the evidence.
The first princess said, “I did not think it could be done, but the thug figured us out. The king told the thug we could choose one of the princesses to be his wife. It did not take the thug very long to make his decision. He had already decided that he liked the eldest princess best. She was clever and spirited as well as beautiful and kind. For the most part, the princess thought the thug was cleaver and kind.
The thug was given royal chambers and royal garments to wear, he and the eldest princess were married, and the wedding guests happily danced the light away.
Clearly the youngest princess was having anxiety. Anxiety is usually based on threats or dangers that are indefinite or are not real or very likely to come true right away. The girls knew they were doing something wrong by lying and sneaking out at night and could have gotten hurt.
If this is truly the Age of Anxiety, it may be because we have entered an era when things happen so rapidly, on such a large scale, that we are overwhelmed by them. For example, we know something of the threats to human survival and our planet. Our uncertainty as to how and when such things might happen, or about what to do, might be called anxiety.
However, anxiety, like fear, has some constructive aspects. It is not always wise to rid ourselves of anxieties. We can learn from them. Thought they are uncomfortable feelings, rather than popping a tranquilizer, we might be better off trying to find out the causes of the upset and work through it. The main thing in life is to be honest and do not be afraid to be human.
The Power of Love, Trust, and Friendship
It is my belief that the only power which can resist the power of fear is the power of love. In Ancient Sacramento, there lived a poor slave named Androcles. His cruel master made him work from daybreak until long past nightfall. Androcles had very little time to rest and very little time to eat. One day, he decided to run away from his harsh master, even though he would be breaking the law.
In the dark of the night, when the moon was blue, Androcles got up from the miserable heap of straw and rags that served as his bed. Crouching low so he was no taller than the bushes that dotted the fields, the young slave moved swiftly away from his master’s land.
Clouds covered the moon that night, and Androcles crossed the open fields unseen. It was only when he came to the wild woods that Androcles dared to stand up tall again. Androcles found a sheltered place at the foot of a tall tree. There he lay himself down on a bed of pine needles and fell fast asleep.
When Androcles awoke, he hiked deeper into the woods so he would not be found by his master. There he looked for water and something to eat. However, other than a few berries, there was no food to be found.
Day after day, Androcles searched for food. And day after day, he went hungry. Androles grew so weary and weak that at last he was afraid he would not live through the night. He had just enough strength to creep up to the mouth of a cave that he had passed many times. Androcles crawled into the cave and fell into a deep sleep.
As Androcles lay sleeping, a tiger was hunting in the woods nearby. The tiger liked to sleep in the daytime, and hunt for his food at night.
The tiger caught a small animal for supper. He ate his meal beside a stream in the woods. Then he set off for his cave as the morning began to fill the sky with light.
Just before reaching the cave where Androcles slept, the tiger stepped on the fallen branch of a thorn tree. A large thorn went deep into his paw.
The tiger let out an angry roar, which woke Androcles with a terrible start. From the mouth of the cave, Androcles could see the tiger rolling on the ground in pain. The tiger’s roars echoed loudly in the cave.
The tiger let out an angry roar, which woke Androcles with a terrible start. From the mouth of the cave, Androcles could see the tiger rolling on the ground in pain. The tiger’s roars echoed loudly in the cave.
Androcles was terrified that the tiger would attack him. However, the tiger held out his hurt paw to Androcles. Even from a distance, Androcles could see the large thorn in the tiger’s paw.
Androcles found some courage and came closer. He slowly sat down on the ground near the beat. To Androcles’ astonishment, the huge tiger flopped his huge paw into the young man’s lap.
Androcles spoke soothing words to the tiger as he carefully pulled the thorn from the tiger’s s paw. “Do not worry, handsome tiger. We will have this thorn out in no time,” he said softly. The tiger seemed to understand that Androcles was trying to help him. When the thorn was gone, the tiger rubbed his head against Androcles’ shoulder and purred a rumbling purr.
Androcles was no longer afraid of the tiger. The tiger was grateful to Androcles and did not even mind that Androcles had moved into his cave.
The tiger slept most of the day. And at night, he hunted for food while Androcles slept. In the morning, the tiger would bring fresh meat to Androcles, who would build a robust fire to cook his delicious meal.
Every morning after Androcles ate, he and the tiger would play in the charming greenery of the woods nearby. The tiger showed Androcles how much he liked him by rubbing his head against the young man and licking his hands and feet. Androcles scratched the tiger behind the ears and petted his sleek back.
Androcles enjoyed his life with the tiger very much. Thanks to the tiger’s successful hunting, Androcles was stronger and happier than he had ever been. When the tiger lay down in the cave for his daytime sleep, Androcles would hunt for berries and grains in the woods. It no longer matter that he could not find enough berries and grain for a man to live on.
One morning, as Androcles was cooking what the tiger had brought him, five thugs suddenly appeared and surprised him. “We saw the smoke from your fire, we have come to arrest you for running away from your master,” they said.
Androcles tried to run from the thugs, but they were too fast for him. Three thugs sprinted after Androcles. When they caught him, the tired his hands behind his back so tightly that they bled.
The tiger awoke with a start. However, before he could even get to his feet, the other two soldiers threw a strong rope net over him, so he could not escape. They attacked two ends of the net to a stout pole and carried the angry tiger out of the woods.
Androcles, his hands bound behind him, was forced to march to Sacramento. He felt terrible that he had brought hard to his beloved friend, the tiger. It was only when Androcles and the soldiers marched into Sacramento that he learned what was in store for himself.
The thugs led Androcles toward a huge King’s arena. One thug said to Androcles, “You shall regret the day you ran away from your master! Your punishment is to fight a hungry tiger!”
It was the custom in Sacramento, at that time, to entertain the people with battles. These battles were fought on the sandy floor of the King’s arena, which was circled by rows and rows of seats.
The thugs took Androcles to a prison under the arena seats. Then they left him alone in his prison cell.
A long time passed, but the thugs did not return, but the soldiers did not return. From time to time, Androcles heard the roar of hungry tigers in another part of the arena.
At least Androcles heard Too Short Married to the Game blaring, and the bars to Androcles’ prison were opened. A thug roughly pulled Androcles out of his cell and pushed him onto the field. Then the prison bars went down again.
Androcles found himself in the middle of a huge arena. Hundreds of people were watching him. When the tiger’s roar sounded throughout the arena, the people grew excited. Poor Androcles felt sick with fear when he saw a tiger in the cage at the far end of the arena. The song Married to the Game by Too Short started blaring a third time, and the bars to the tiger’s cage were opened.
A lean tiger bounded out of the cell, roaring ferociously with hunger. The crowd of people shouting in the arena sounded just like another mighty roar in Androcles’ ears.
The tiger crouched only for a moment, but in that moment Androcles recognized his friend from the enchanted forest. The tiger let out another thundery roar and bounded across the King’s arena in three long leaps. He stopped right in front of Androcles—and then gently lifted his big paw.
Androcles gave a might shout of joy. “Tiger Woods, you remember me!” he cried. He took the tiger’s paw in his hand and patted it lovingly. Then the tiger rubbed his great head against the young man’s shoulder.
The crowd of people, in the Sacramento King’s arena, was stunned into silence. They wondered why the tiger did not attack Androcles. The emperor motioned to Androcles.
“How did you tame this ferocious Tiger Woods?” the emperor asked Androcles. “I merely helped him when he needed help, Most High,” Androcles replied. “That is why he spared my life.”
The emperor freed Androcles and Tiger Woods. Tiger returned to his wife, and Androcles became a free man in Sacramento.
Androcles often went for a walk to visit his good friend Tiger Woods, who never forgot him. Tiger and his family reunited, built a new mansion, and lived happily ever after.
One of the best ways to turn on to living is to develop meaningful friendships. Friendships are sought by each of us because we are gregarious, or social, animals. In other words, we have a need to be accepted by, to associate with, and to pursue life with other people.
We have a need to share our identities and humanness with other humans. Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Ignorant people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.
All that Glitters is not Gold
We are all of us, more or less, subject to delusions of vanity, or hope, or love. One morning a little tailor sat in his shop, he was bent over his work, sewing as he always did this time of day. Suddenly, the tailor has a taste for jelly, so he took out a loaf of bread, put some butter on it, put it in the oven and toasted the bread, and then applied some boysenberry jelly to the large slice of toast. “I am more hungry than I thought, let us hope this jelly fills my belly,” he told himself.
Before eating his delicious snack, the tailor wanted to sew a few more stiches, so he did. However, after he finished the project he was working on, the tailor say a swarm of gnats buzzing around his tasty, butter toast, with boysenberry jelly. With his hand, the young man waved the gnats away, but they flew right back. So the tailor grabbed a dish rag and like James Bond, the cloth tore through the air as the tailor snapped the rag and killed all seven of the buzzing gnats at once.
The tailor thought, “The entire World should know of my skill!” So he made a belt, just his size, with the finest threads, and sewed the words: “Seven in one blow!” The tailor tired the blue belt around his waist, and felt the need for a big adventure. The tailor looked for something useful to take with him on his journey. All he found was a piece of cheese; he put it in his pocket. As he was locking the door, he heard a bird wrestling in the bushes; the tailor picked the bird up and put it in his pocket, and then began his adventure.
The tailor walked through town and up the side of a mountain without stopping. At the top of the mountain, he met a giant. “Hello, Giant,” said the tailor, with a bow. “I am on a big adventure Will you join me?”
“A young man like you on a big adventure?” rumbled the giant. For an answer, the tailor showed the giant his belt. The giant read the words: “Seven in one blow!”
The giant found it very hard to believe that this tiny tailor could kill seven men with one blow. So he decided to test the little man’s strength. “Can you do this?” asked the giant. He picked up a stone and squeezed it until the water dripped from the stone.
“Watch this,” the tailor said, as he took something from his pocket. The giant thought it was a stone, too, but it was actually a piece of cheese. The tailor squeezed it until liquid whey dripped from his hand.
The giant raised his eyebrows. “Well, can you do this?” he asked. The giant picked up another stone and tossed it high into the air. It flew into the Heavens.
“What this,” the tailor said, as he took something from his pocket. It was the bird, of course. With a toss of his hand, the tailor sent the little bird flying out of sight.
However, the giant was a poor loser. “Perhaps you would like to come home with me and meet my friend,” the giant said with an evil gleam in his eye. “Certainly,” the tailor replied.
The giant took the tailor to his cave. A group of giants sat around a roaring fire. They watched as their friend led the young man to bed. “You can sleep here,” said the giant. “Even a man who can kill seven in one blow needs to rest.”
The tailor was not sued to such a big bed. So he spelt in a corner on the floor. It was good for him that he did. During the night, the giants pounded on the bed with clubs, until they thought they had taken care of the pesky tailor.
In the morning, the giants went swimming in the river. They joked about the strange man and his silly belt. When the tailor walked up whistling a merry tune, the giants were so afraid, they ran away without their clothes! The tailor laughed and left the giants behind. He walked very far and then lay down for a nap on a soft, grassy hill.
The tailor slept a long time. Some people found him and read his belt. They thought that he was a mighty soldier. When the tailor awoke, the people took him to meet their king. The king has never met a man who could kill seven in one blow. He hired the stranger for his army, and gave him a bag full of gold.
The other soldiers were very angry. “This is not fair, Most High! We will leave your army if we do not get a full bad of gold to make us feel more better.” The king could not lose a whole army over one man. He decided to send the man on a suicide mission. So the Most High went to the little man, with a challenge. “I need you to kill two giants that live in my building. If you do, I will give you my daughter and half my kingdom as a reward.” The tailor knew this was his chance to become a hero.
The tailor went into the building the next morning, One hundred soldiers went with him. As he rode in the King’s Mercedes Benz, the tailor made a plan. “Stay behind until I call you,” he told the soldiers. Then he rode on until he found the two giants, sleeping in their apartments with the doors unlocked. He began bamming on the door, at 3am, talking about his TV was not working.
The giant awoke and went to his friend’s apartment, and the tailor hit over the head and he died. Then the tailor went to the next apartment and kicked the door down. The giant came out of his apartment, and said, “Who the—,” then he saw his friend laying on the floor dead, and went to offer him assistance, until the giant hit him over the head, and killed him.
The tailor called the king’s soldiers to come and see what he had done. They tailor called the king’s soldiers to come and see what he had done. They were amazed. The new soldier had beaten the giants without getting a scratch. “Two giants are easy compared to killing seven in one blow,” laughed the tailor.
The king heard about the tailor’s great feat, but he was not ready to give up his daughter and half of his riches, yet. So he thought of a plan. “Brave soldier, a wild boar is tearing up the farmers’ houses and cars,” explained the king. “Please catch it for me.”
Off the tailor went to find the boar. He was not sure how he would catch it, but he knew he would think of something. Suddenly, he heard a snort behind him. The boar was coming his way! The tailor ran into the building, through the open door left propped open in the alley. The boar was close behind. The little man crawled out of a window just as the boar came through the doors. The tailor ran to shut the doors. The wild boar was trapped!
When the King came back to the castle, he had a jumbo pack of bacon with him. When the king asked how he had tricked the beast, the proud tailor said, “One who can kill seven in one blow can surely get a silly boar to do what he wants!”
The king tried one last trick to get rid of the tailor. He ordered the little man to catch the unicorn that was scaring the villagers. The tailor agreed to go, but only if he could go alone. The king agreed. So the tailor walked into the woods, looking for the unicorn.
When the tailor heard a crashing and coughing sound, he turned to see the unicorn running straight for him. The tailor stood perfectly still. Just as the unicorn reached him, the tailor jumped out of the way. He had been standing in front of a tree. The unicorn’s horn drove deep into the tree and became stuck in the hard wood.
The tailor freed the unicorn and rode it back to the palace in a cloud of dust. Again the king was amazed to see the tailor. “How did you tame this wild unicorn?” he asked the tailor.
The tailor told the king, “For one who has killed seven in one blow, a unicorn is like a kitten!” The king had no choice, but to keep his promise to the tailor. He ordered his servants to plan a large feast. The tailor and the king’s daughter were married wed in a ceremony that was attended by everyone in the kingdom.
The king thought his new son-in-law was a hero. He did not know that the man who married his daughter and took half his kingdom was only a simple tailor.
The tailor almost gave up his secret one night. His wife heard him say in his sleep, “Boy, make me that waistcoat and patch that gown, or there will be trouble!”
The princess ran to her father. “He is not a hero, Father! He is only a tailor,” she cried.
“Daughter, leave your door open tonight,” said the king. “My soldiers will sneak in and take care of that little man one and for all. You should not be married to a simple tailor.”
The king’s trick heard the king talking about the tailor. He thought highly of the tailor for his courage and skill, so he ran to tell the tailor about the king’s plan.
That night, the tailor pretended to fall asleep. He groaned and then whispered, “Boy, drop your carriage in that water, you need a bath you filthy demon, or else there will be trouble. I have killed seven at one blow, beaten two giants, make bacon of a snorting boar, and tamed a wild unicorn. I am not afraid to make trouble…even with soldiers outside my door.” The soldiers heard this and ran in fear. That is how a simple man’s bravery and brains made him a hero (in his own eyes).
All that glitters is not gold. Watch who you allow in your life; if they do not bring out the best in you, leave them alone. Not only may you put yourself in danger, but your entire family. Sin begets sin. It is a dangerous thing to laugh at the wrong man or woman.

However, critics believe that they Mayor paid for the investigation and that it was biased. The Mayor claims that the incident never happened, and was filed prior to his second term as Mayor. The city employee says the Mayor invited her in his office, closed the door to his library, pressed his body against hers, hugged her, grabbed her torso, and asked if she could “feel it?”

In addition, there have been other claims of the same type filed against Kevin Johnson, who is a former NBA basketball player. There was a case in the 1990s involving the alleged molestation, of a girl, Kevin Johnson met when she was 15, which includes taped statements by Johnson that are, at the least, concerning. Kevin Johnson admits to hugging the girl an says “The hug was more intimate than it should have been”. Kevin Johnson settled the case out of court for $230,000.00. Even more concerning, Kevin Johnson runs St. Hope Academy, and there are recent reports of inappropriate sexual behavior on Johnson’s part towards five St. Hope students. These claims were uncovered during a financial investigation. An investigation by a federal oversight agency into the administration of federal funds at the St. Hope Academy says Johnson misused public funds and that some of the money was recovered in a settlement. Kevin Johnson is the same Mayor that spoke up against Donald Sterling and asked him to be banned from the NBA and said that he should be forced to sell his team. Many would like to see Kevin Johnson Resign.

Infrastructure in America is outdated. Americans want to play and want billion dollar arenas. Safety comes last. 1.7 percent of GDP is spent on infrastructure in America, Capitol funds got cut. There is a $21 billion back log on track and maintenance.
11 people have been killed in wrong way crashes in Sacramento, California this year already. Most have been drunk drivers. Not only will a DUI cost you at least $10,000.00, you make kill others and yourself. Many are saying it may be a good idea to have a system to alert Highway Patrol of a driver going the wrong way so they can stop them.
USA used to spend 4.7 of GDP on infrastructure, cut to 1.7 percent. China spends 9 percent and Europe 5 percent of GDP on infrastructure.

It actually cost more to live in China, in cities like Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai, than San Francisco. $30,000.00 USD may be enough to pay rent, for a year, in China’s major cities, and that is all. A five bedroom house, in China, goes for $5,000.00 a month. A 1 bedroom apartment for at least $850.00 a month. Both are figures in USA dollars.
How are you Still Alive?!
The way you smile, the way you taste, you know I have an appetite for sexy things. All you do is look at me, it is a disgrace. What is running through my mind is you, up in my face, yeah, yeah.

Your voice is like music to my ears, whisper softly and the World just disappears. Take me high and just wipe away my fears. When you are with me, oh boy, it is my heartbeat that I hear.

Ooh, ooh baby, touch me and I come alive, I can feel you on my lips, I can feel you deep inside. Ooh, ooh baby in your arms I finally breathe wrap me up in all your love that is the oxygen I need, yeah.

You are filling me up, you are filling me up, you are filling me up, you are filling me up, you are filling me up, you are filling me up with your love.

The more you move, the more I tense. It is like you got me hypnotized. I am in a trance. Your jersey fits. It is right at home, between my hands, and now I hope you know that I am your biggest fan, yeah, yeah

Your voice is like music to my ears, whisper softly and the World just disappears. Take me high and just wipe away my fears. When you are with me, oh boy, it is my heartbeat that I hear.
Ooh, ooh baby touch me and I come alive. I can feel you on my lips; I can feel you deep inside. Ooh, ooh baby in your arms I finally breathe, wrap me up in all your love because that is the oxygen I need, yeah.
You got something that I really want and come here; oh we do not even have to talk and lay back, and let me tell you what I am thinking because I like you, because I like you.
Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby (baby), baby (baby), baby.
This song is actually about resurrection. Her producer made his mission crystal clear, he would stop at nothing to prevent her baby from being born, he is not the only one either, his followers are willing to join the crusade. They sneak into her room and smother her with a pillow.
However, one man has the power to join her with her one true love. The two end up sharing their first kiss…finally. The tender moment is all it takes to start her heart again.
She disappears to give birth to the supposedly evil baby of William Randolph Hearst. She gives birth to what they think is a normal and healthy baby boy; meanwhile, he is too heavy to take outside.
People still believe that baby is evil, so they hide him. Living life with her healthy baby boy, she is happier than ever. All seems right until the doctor recognized the young baby and sends them to the evil town of Sacrament, which he is supposed to concur and purge of evil spirits. However, he grows up thinking he is a normal boy, until he turns eight, and the satanic rituals began. Are those really churches?
Human Nature cannot help being Itself

Instructions: Listen to Aaliyah — I Care for you (While reading this). It is not a denial of anything to have been always without it, and what Troy had never enjoyed he did not miss; but, being fully conscious that what sober people missed he enjoyed, his capacity, though really less, seemed greater than theirs. A man in public life expects to be sneered at, it is the fault of his elevated situation, and not of himself (the same can be said about women in high positions). Get a hold of yourself! Emotions are not as simple as they may sound. They often gang up on you. If we simply felt one feeling at a time, that might be easier to deal with. However, it is not unusual at all for a person to experience several emotions at once or one right after another. To people who are comfortable with their emotions, being deluged with feelings is not a serious problem. However, to those who are unused to feeling much or who do not like or want emotions, such an experience may be like an attack of illness. Sometimes when people are guilty of abusing you, they try to act like nothing happened to you. Not everyone is good. Do people have trouble feeling joy? It seems so. Some individuals are convinced that life must be painful. They resent any good feelings in themselves or others. Joy seems somehow irresponsible to them.

Sometimes you hear a person say that it is wrong to be happy when so many people the World over are in pain. However, I do not think I have ever heard of anybody, anywhere in the World, getting happier because I held back on joy. Do some natures delight in evil, as others are thought to delight in virtue? Or is there a pleasure in being accessory to a theft when we cannot commit it ourselves? The main thing in life is not to be afraid to be human. Depression happens. We have all been down, bummed-out, unhappy, restless and fretful, sad and tearful. Depression is an extreme of this. It is painful and no one likes it, but is it still a normal response. Feeling depressed usually means we are angry or blocked, at some point. Rather than denying the feeling, we would rather be healthier to use the natural time out that depression creates to work it out. If a person feels angry, but cannot let the emotion out, one often turns it in on himself and gets depressed. He gets headaches when he would rather hit somebody else on the head. He gets sad and tearful when he would much rather make someone else feel that way. However, for whatever reasons, the typical cause of depression, in most of us, is held-in anger or resentment. Sometimes people in positions of authority (parents, religious leaders, and others) use guilt as a way of controlling undesired behavior; for this and other reasons, some of us end up feeling a lot of unnecessary or invalid guilt. If you feel guilty over a bad situation, check out the facts to make certain that you really are or are not to blame. Even if you are, find some way to forgive yourself and keep a healthy self-esteem. Continuing on a guilt trip helps nobody, least of all, you!

Most people know obviously enough, when they are down. Depression can be more than a minor fluctuation in mood when these five conditions exist. You have a consistently negative opinion of yourself; you engage in frequent self-criticism and self-blame; you place negative interpretations on events that usually would not bother you; the future looks bleak and negative; you feel that your responsibilities are overwhelming. Combating depression: If you do not do well in class or at work, how do you react? If you see it as a small, isolated setback, you probably will not feel too bad. However, if you feel like you have blown it in a big way, depression may follow. Men, women, and children, and event pets, who strongly link everyday events to long-term goals (such as a successful career, high income, or love) tend to overreact to day-to-day disappointments. What does the preceding tells us about the blues (sadness or disappointment)? The implication is that it is important to take daily tasks one step at a time and successfully complete them, knowing you did your best. That way, you are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, or hopeless. When you are feeling a little sad or blue, make a daily schedule for yourself, and try to fill up every hour in the day with activities. It is best to start with easy activities and progress to more difficult tasks.

Check off each item as completed. That way you will begin to break the self-defeating cycle of doom and gloom to prevent yourself from falling further behind. Depressed people usually spend much of their time sleeping. However, a series of small accomplishments, successes, or pleasure may be all that you need to get back on the right track. Nonetheless, if you need help figuring out what do to, do not turn to drugs or drinking, this will make matters worse, and prescription drugs are not always the answer. Sometimes you need several sessions of therapy to recover. Attacks of the blues are common, and should be distinguished from more intense cases of depression. Psychotic depression, which you can sink into if you do not get help, is much more serious and involved patters of depression that are far deeper and long lasting, it can lead to suicide or major emotional impairment. In such cases, it would be wise to seek professional help, as suicide is a silent killer and can sneak up on you when you least expect it. The life blues and bouts of depression are closely related to stressful events. Learning to manage college work and to challenge self-critical thinking can help alleviate mild life related depression.

Disaster, depression, and sorrow often precede illness. More surprising is the finding that major life changes, both good and bad, can increase susceptibility to accident or illness. Men and women open their mouths to jeer at me; they strike my cheek in scorn and unite together against me. God has turned me over to evil men and women, and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked. All is well with me, but he shattered me; he sized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target. God, put up security for me. Surely mockers surround me; my eyes must dwell on their hostility. Who else will put up security for me? You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore you will not let them triumph. I entertain the faith that in our venting we shall get addicted to wonder and know the joy of constantly feeling something a little new. Grief can take care of itself, but you get full value you of a joy, you must have somebody to share it with. Misery likes to be alone, but happiness loves good company. There are enough serious, sad, tragic, and fearful experiences in life for all of us. Joy, pride in achievement, and warmth are feelings that deserve their place in the Sun just as much as grief and anger. However, like other emotions, feeling good about feeling good may take some practice! Hey my baby, why you looking so down? Seems like you need loving, baby, you need a girl like me around. Hey my baby, tell me, why you cry? Here take my hand and yeah, wipe those tears from your eyes. Can I talk to you? Comfort you? Let you know I care for you? Hey, sexy baby Why did your girl leave you in the pain? To let a fine man like you go, she must be insane! Hey, sexy baby, there is no need to worry, no. Oh, boy if you call on me I will come, I will come in a hurry.

Honesty’s best Voucher is Honesty’s Face
Oh most holy angel of God, appointed by God to be my guardian, I give you thanks for all the benefits which you have ever bestowed on me in body and in soul. I praise and glorify you that you condescended to assist me with such patient fidelity, and to defend me against all the assaults of my enemies.
Blessed be the hour in which you were assigned me for my guardian, my defender and my patron. In acknowledgement and return for all your loving ministries to me, I offer you the infinitely precious and noble heart, and firmly purpose to obey you henceforward, and most faithfully to serve my God.
Heaven, at a distance, does not attract us so forcibly as a fool’s paradise in sight. I am dying in Paradise, long are the times of Heaven. All sinners would be miserable in Heaven. Every human act, good or ill, is an angel to guide or to warn. There is a way to hell, even from the gates of Heaven.
I do not know what heart means. I sometimes fancy that it is a talent for getting into debt, and running away with other men’s wives. Who know what the justice of Heaven may inflict in order to convince us that we are not out of the reach of misfortune; and to reduce us to a better reliance, than that we have hitherto presumptuously made?
History, like love, is apt to surround her heroes with an atmosphere of imaginary brightness. Not a day passes over the Earth, but men and women, of note, do great deeds, speak great words, and suffer noble sorrows. One who is too proud ever to admit a mean thought, who is ambitious only of ideal excellence, who has an inflexible will only in the pursuit of truth and righteousness, may be a saint and a hero.
Honesty is the best policy, I always find it so. I lost forty seven pound ten by being honest this morning. However, it is all gain, it is gain! A man who loses forty seven pound ten, in one morning, by his honesty, is a man to be envied. If it had been eighty pound, the luxuriousness of feeling would have been increased. Every pound lost would have been a hundredweight of happiness gained.
You had better be an honest person than half a rogue. One that loseth their honesty hath nothing else to lose. One remedy for mistakes is honesty. By this I know that you delight in me: my enemy will not shout in triumph over me. However, you have upheld me because of my integrity, and set me in your presence forever. Blessed be the LORD, our father in Heaven, from everlasting to everlasting.
So you walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous. For the upright will inhabit the land, and those with integrity will remain in it, and I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, Oh Lord, I will make music. I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when you come to me? Will walk with integrity of heart within my house because whoever walks in in integrity will be delivered, but he or she who is crooked in their ways will suddenly fail.
Consider them both, the sea and the land; and do you not find a strange analogy to something in yourself? For as appalling ocean surrounds the verdant land, so in the soul of man there lies one insular Tahiti, full of peace and joy, but encompassed by all the horrors of the half known life. God help thee! Push not off from that isle, thou canst never return!
We are all in the hands of the Gods. Oh God! That man should be a thing for immortal should to sieve through. It is our habit to say that while the lower nature can never understand the higher, the higher nature commands a complete view of the lower. However, the higher nature has to learn this comprehension, as we learn the art of vision, by a good deal of hard experience, often with bruises and gashes incurred in taking things up the wrong end, and fancying our space wider than it is.
The human mind is easily induced to forget those benefits with which we are constantly surrounded, and our possession of which we regard as secure. Human behavior is governed by a large number of types and motives, some that are physiological, but many more that are acquired and learned through social interaction, personal experiences, and growth experiences.
In the healthy person, adulthood is characterized by a variety of new challenges. If one’s sense of self hood is sufficiently developed in adolescence, a young adult will seek to expand that sense of self and awareness, to actualize one’s potential for growth and creativity. Actualize may be a new word to you, and it means to make real, to make actual those characteristics or talents that are present, but not yet developed in an individual (such qualities are sometimes called latent).
In self-actualization, the newly formed self is motivated to try out new experiences to see what it can do. Most of the time, our decisions are not clear cut one, in which one choice is obviously best. An individual in a particular situation may feel trapped in the middle, pulled in two different directions. A self-actualizing person takes all the alternatives into account.
Conversely, a person with a lot of pride, pomp, and circumstance may have a huge ego, so huge that they even think they are God. This type of person is called a megalomaniac because they are not fulfilled. Megalomaniacs spend most of their time searching for identity, praise, or approval.
Or perhaps their safety needs are so great that one never tries anything new, challenging, or exciting, because he or she is afraid to do so. People on the lower level of humanity just care about sex, food, and gratification because they are operating from deficiency motivation. They are so strongly motivated to fill in the holes, plug in the gaps, that very little time or energy is left over to meet other, more advanced needs.
People who proclaim that they are God are stuck at a low level of the evolutionary scale. In contrast, a starving person is unlikely to be a self-actualizer, unless he is a mystic giving up food and water voluntarily to concentrate on things that are more important than his own mind or well-being. And in that case, he must find ways to more or less disconnect his physiological motivations.
A self-actualizers, in comparison, will ordinarily have been given enough support and love by his parents, while he was young, so that he is secure, not afraid to try new things. He will have developed a strong sense of autonomy, and will feel secure enough about his own personality, strengths, weaknesses, and uniqueness, to expand his horizons.
In other words, a self-actualizer, will not be burdened by the deficiency motivation we discussed earlier. Does this mean that every self-actualizing person must have had a perfect childhood? No, not at all, but he must have found new ways to overcome deficiencies so that they do not prevent him from concentrating on expanding his abilities, enjoying his life, not always hung up at some lower level. How? Perhaps through therapy, perhaps through religion, and maybe through association with other people.
What motivates a self-actualizing person? Start by saying what does not control his behavior. Usually, he is not governed by tradition or by other people’s wishes. This is not to say that he scorns tradition and care nothing about other people’s needs. It is to say that he is not controlled by these things, when he wants to do something different.
The mistake most people make is to think that the self-actualized person is a superhuman person with no weaknesses. The truth is that he very often is silly, wasteful, or thoughtless, and can be thoroughly stubborn or irritating. What I want to make clear is that the self-actualized person is an exciting person and not stuffed shirt or joyless person, as many might want to make him.
His virtues are extraordinary, but his faults are also very much present. So as one becomes his actualizing potentials, it is important not to seek perfection, but to discover the joy that comes from integration of both strength and weaknesses, to freely skate between all potentials. He knows that there is more to life, does not have a sex life, is very clean, single, honest, and accepts responsibility.
A self-actualizer tends to be impatient with trivial and nonsensical rules. He will be bound by a rule if it makes sense to him. He seeks novelty, stimulation, challenge, rather than safety. In his job, he will not be so much tempted by a larger salary as by a chance to do something well, to experiment.
As the self-actualizer gets older, he tends to be more and more interested in cognitive (thinking and learning) and esthetic (art, music, architecture, literature, philosophy) activities.
Most self-actualizers do not tend to be highly competitive. Does that seem like a contradiction for such a competent individual? Think of people you have probably known, who are sufficiently self-confident and talented, that they do not need to compare themselves with anyone else. If you are secure enough in knowing what you want out of life, you do not have to use anyone else’s standards. Meeting your own standards is what counts. (This is called being-motivation or growth-motivation, in contract to deficiency-motivation.”
The self-actualizing person is comfortable with other people, probably in part because he feels no need to compete with or judge them and is not worried about their competing with or judging him. He realizes that human beings come in all varieties, some cruel, hostile, selfish; some victims, sufferers, or outcast; and still others loving, cooperative, able to share a larger vision. The self-actualizer knows that each of these qualities is present, to some degree, in all of us. And he tries to help as many people as possible to maximize their own potential for full living.
None of this meant to imply that the self-actualizer is perfect or that he exhibits all these good qualities all the time, he is just as human being, though he can hardly be called ordinary. He is a person who, because of his own inner motivations, has been able to use more of his ability and intelligence than most of us, because in the main, he is not controlled by his own lower needs or by other people.
The special private happiness of the free person comes, I think, from his finding ways that help him be present in what he is doing. When I feel most pressured, most unfree, it is usually because I am not there as me. I do not mean that I am not in what I am doing, necessarily, I mean that I am driving myself, treating myself as an object, a tool, an instrument. No man is born into the World without his particular allotment.
Money does Inflate Happiness
A remarkable consistency surrounds the relationship between money and happiness. Money has been shown to have a huge and reliable effect on happiness. Humans devote much of their time and energy to earning money because they are motivated by the belief that money will have a substantial impact on their overall life satisfaction.
I believe that it is true that with the more money you make the better off your life will be. I studied a young man, who used to work sixty hours a week, and he was under a lot of stress, but was able to buy the thing he needed, did not have to depend on anyone, and could go out with friends and have fun and buy gifts for people, which made him happy.
However, the same young man was injured and had to stop working. While he was in recovery, he was more miserable. Not only did his body hurt, but he had to live among other people with low incomes. He noticed that his neighbors were dysfunctional, violent, and untrustworthy and many of them were criminals.
The people with lower incomes were like children, however, they were worse because they did not have adult supervision, as they were the adults. These people never took responsibility for their own actions, had poor hygiene, and were generally embarrassing.
Not only that, but while in recovery, even if you are hurt, you have to prove that you are hurt to continue to receive your income. This young man was very industrious, so he was not lazy, he was truly injured, but lost all control of his life. He was at the mercy of others. If they did not like him, they could get away with harassing him, cutting his pay off, and his neighbors would even vandalize his car.
While he was trying to rebuild his life and repair his body, he noticed that his friends, who were still working, were generally happy. Although they were stressed out, they still had more options in life. If they did not like their job, they could choose to work for a new company. If they did not like where they lived, they could move.
If the friends, who were employed, needed car repairs, they could afford to pay for them. Living on a low income is no fun, especially when you are used to having money. Also, with less money, you do not feel like an adult because you can never afford to do anything, and after a while you lose all of your friends and end up lonely.
So be thankful for your jobs, no matter how much you do not like them, they provide you with a lot of happiness. Could you imagine wanting to work, but your body is seriously damaged and your reputation also? The spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. Everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.
People with more money have things that inflate their happiness, but keep your faith and know that no matter how much you make, God will bless you. You have not come this far just to be thrown away. The fact of the matter, however, is that the more money you make, the more control you have over your life. There have been some suggestions that if you earn a low income, over a long period, that you start to feel inauthentic
Finally, because people often spend relative to their current income, a loss of income may actually prevent people from maintaining their current life standards; having to file for bankruptcy because one can no longer pay the mortgage on an unnecessarily large house may in fact lead to a real decrease in happiness. So lower incomes generally means you are less happy. Life is more stressful.
