Pleasure is the Safest Test of Virtue

cvbnjmklkjhg

Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure.  When the brain’s alarm system is turned on, it automatically triggers preprogrammed physical escape plans in the oldest parts of the brain. As in other beings, the nerves and chemicals that make up our basic brain structures have a direct connection with out body. When the old brain takes over, it partially shuts down the higher brain, our conscious mind, and propels the body to run, hide, fight, or, on occasion, freeze. By the time we are fully aware of our situation, our body may already be on the move. If the stand your ground, escape, of freeze response is successful and we are able to bypass the danger, we recover our internal equilibrium and gradually “regain our senses.”  #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

fghjkl;

If for some reason the normal response is blocked—for example, when people are held down, trapped, or otherwise prevented from taking effective action, be it in a war zone, a car accident, domestic violence, or a rape—the brain keeps secreting stress chemical, and the brain’s electrical circuits continue to fire in vain. Longer after the actual event has passed, the brain may keep sending signals to the body to escape a threat that may no longer exists. Since at least 1889, when the first known scientific account of traumatic stress was documented, it has been recognized that trauma survivors are prone to continue the action, or rather the (futile) attempt at action, which began when the episode happened. Being able to move and do something to protect oneself is a critical factor in determining whether or not a horrible experience will leave long-lasting scars.  #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

Pleasure and pain are the night and day of life, and succeed one another as duly. Effective action (the result of stand your ground or escape) end the threat. Immobilization keeps the body in a state of inescapable shock and learned helplessness. Faced with danger, people automatically secrete stress hormones to fuel resistance and flee. Brain and body are programmed to run to the house, where safety can be restored and stress hormones can come to rest. In these strapped-down men who are being evacuated far from the war zone, after the Vietnam war, stress hormone levels remain elevated and are turned against the survivors, stimulating ongoing fear, depression, rage, and physical disease.  #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

When pain is over, the remembrance of it often becomes a pleasure. It is painful to be frustrated in what we propose as our pleasure. I have known a good man wish to have bad news true, merely because he had related them: and we may conceive a saint vexed at not finding a man dead, when he had digested a funeral sermon in his mind, and was ready to bury him. The most important job of the brain is to ensure our survival, even under the most miserable conditions. Everything else is secondary. In order to do that, brains are required to: generate internal signals that register what our bodies require, such as food, rest, protection, sex, and shelter; create a map of the World to pint to where to go to satisfy those requirements; generate the necessary energy and actions to get there; warn us of dangers and opportunities along the way; and adjust our actions based on the requirements of the movement. And since human beings are mammals, creatures that can only survive and thrive in groups, all of these imperatives require coordination and collaboration.  #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

In the state of future perfection, there will be pleasure without danger and security without restraint. The love of pleasure and the fear of pain are the ruling principles of the human heart; in which they maintain an uninterrupted struggle for superiority. Psychological problems occur when our internal signals do not work, when our maps do not lead us where we are required to go, when we are too paralyzed to move, when our actions do not correspond to our requirements, or when our relationships break down. Every brain structure that I discuss has a role to play in these essential function, and as well will see, trauma can interfere with every one of them. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 5

Life in Motion and Intelligence is Faith

To realize the human condition is to become anything more than a well-clothed animal, one has to act as if there were a moral order behind the thunder, and yet one must make this choice, if one makes it, knowing that it will never necessarily be vindicated—not at any rate, by the light of this World. In such a World, we see many with a remorseless logic, when people say that it is okay to terminate someone because of their sexuality. We must seek the meaning of our human fate not in what becomes of us but in what we become. Death is miscellaneous and commonplace; it is life whose quality may be noble and distinctive. Suffering we recoil from, but it is a greater thing to suffer than to lack the feelings and the virtues that make it possible to suffer. When we come crying hither, we bring with us the badge of our mortal misery; but it is also the badge of the vulnerabilities that give us access to whatever grandeur we achieve. This presence is nonjudging, spacious, compassionate, and loving. It pervades everywhere, containing and seeing all things. Love is always present and welcomes everything. Sensation, emotion, thought, conflict, sorrow, and joy all arise, unfold, and have their resolution in Awareness.  Awareness has no stake in anything being other than it is or anyone being other than they are. This welcoming attribute of awareness enables people to find their psychological freedom and to eventually realize their official freedom when their separate ego-identity entirely dissolves.

The essential quality of awareness is the capacity to hold an environment of healing—a place where you can unfold your deepest experiences of conflict, pain, and trauma, working through projection and transference and uncovering solutions appropriate to each life circumstance. When people recognize their underlying nature as spacious nonjudging, compassionate, and loving presence, causeless equality emerges. The perfume that arises from this profound insight lingers even as residues of separation remain. With repeated insight, these residues become transparently permeable to the underlying fragrance of awareness. Our true nature is always present, even when it is unrecognized. Once glimpsed, however, it leaves behind an unmistakable scent that stimulates the individual’s longing to return from conflict and suffering to the presence that is perfect as it is. As psychological insight and integration unfold, some individuals become available for healing beyond their former self, when they thought that they were alone and isolated, and become a more peaceful and loving person because they recognize the territory that they are navigating, whether it is personal psychology or personal awareness and health-giving occurs. As people stop trying to change, and just listen to their subtle body sensations, emotions, beliefs, and mental images, their defenses against being authentic melt away, and they enter into truly being with what is. As defenses dissolve and integrative insights spontaneously appear we are subject only to what we hold in mind. The body will respond to what we believe consciously or unconsciously because the energy field of the mind is more powerful than that of the body.

Our proneness to accept negative beliefs depends on how much negativity we are holding in the first place. A healthy mind, for instance, will refuse to accept negative thoughts and simply reject them as untrue for oneself. There is a refusal to buy into commonly held negative ideas. We know how easy it is to sell self-condemnation to a guilt-ridden person or fear of some disease to a fearful person. The idea that everybody is crazy will be subscribed to by a person who has sufficient guilt, fear, and naiveté regarding the laws of consciousness. Because of unconscious guilt, a person unconsciously feels that they “deserve” to be crazy. The mind of a person who is weak or guilty of doing bad things will manifest a mental health issue because they believe it to be true and are unable to control their mind and correct behavior which may be deviant. However, the person who has let go of the underlying negative energies of guilt and fear does not have a fearful mind and does not look at everyone else as stupid nor crazy, they just see them as people having an experience, and if they do not like that experience, they stay away from them. Thought is powerful because it has a high rate of vibration. A thought is actually a thing; it has an energy pattern. The more energy we give it; the more power it has to manifest itself physically. We must let go of everything, drop every fear from our minds, drop all confusion from our thought, and enter into the inner secret communion with that great reality, which is our Universal Self—God—in whom we live and move and have our being. We are conscious that this Divine Presence overshadows and indwells. The Universe is eternal and perfect, and we all are loved and perfect as we are.

Sounds like Sacramento

As a flag pole sits lonely and the American flag, which was once in perfect condition, that graced the pole was removed former Mayor of Sacramento, California USA Kevin Johnson had a parade, on Friday, 11 September 2015, around noon, for a group of men called “The Hometown Heroes,” who allegedly stopped a terror attack in Paris, France.  However, that is very odd because 911 is not a day to celebrate, and mind you, Saturday, 12 September 2015 would have been a better day for the parade because more people would have been off work to see it, and 911 is a very somber day, it is not a day to celebrate. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 6

All this is yesterday’s event. Events of later date have floated from me to the shore where all forgotten things will reappear, but this stands like a high rock in the ocean. On 11 September 2001, people witnessed the first passenger plane slam into the World Trade Center, then they saw a ball of fire, emergency crews, and then people jumping from the tower’s window. As body parts hit the ground, people ran for their lives through the rubbles, ash, and smoke of lower Manhattan, New York USA that morning. There was an eerie darkness through the still-smoking pit where Tower One once stood ten days later. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 6

Memory is the principle of moral degeneration. Remembered sin is the most utterly diabolical influence in the Universe. Some memories people would rather forget and would prefer not to remember. However, Sacramento, California USA seems to be a strange place where anything goes. The former Mayor, Kevin Johnson was allowed to rape girls, embezzle money, sexually harass city employees, hire private employees to conduct city business and even is suing the city of Sacramento, California USA. For the life of me, I cannot understand what is going on in Sacramento, as it used to be a beautiful place.  #RyanPhillippe 3 of 6

Traumatized people become stuck, stopped in their growth because they cannot integrate new experiences into their lives. I am very happy to see the American flag because it reminds me of what our service men and women and veterans have done to protect our freedom. How they have given their lives so you can report the news, or manage a building, do research and go to school. Being traumatized means continuing to organize your life as if the trauma were still going on—unchanged and immutable—as every new encounter or event is contaminated by the past.  #RyanPhillippe 4 of 6

After trauma the World is experiences with a different nervous system. The survivor’s energy now becomes focused on suppressing inner chaos, at the expense of spontaneous involvement in their life. These attempts to maintain control over unbearable physiological reactions can result in a whole range of physical symptoms, including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and other ailments. This is why it is critical for trauma treatment to engage the entire organism, body, mind, and brains. In the body, healing from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder means being able to terminate this continued stress mobilization and restore the entire organism to safety. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 6

Health conditions are considered chronic if they last more than three months; included in this category are both mental and physical disorders. Of interest in this regard is the manner in which chronic health conditions affect the activity of individuals—for example, whether they can continue to work. Married individuals have significantly fewer chronic conditions (50 percent fewer) which limit their activities, even though they suffer slightly more chronic diseases overall. This suggests that they can cope with diseases better than people who live alone.  #RyanPhillippe 6 of 6

Responding to Human Pain After the Nightclub Shooting in America

Willingness is a necessary component of awareness. People often arrive to therapy with negative expectations and considerable resistance. However, throughout the period they hung in despite defensiveness, uncertainty, and the demand for change. Many people left feeling less demoralized, more confident, and with specific steps to implement a denomination-wide strategy. From isolated, reactive, independent activity a more related, rational, collaborate understanding emerged. Again, however, I warn you not to assume that all problems were solved, and all people satisfied. Yet, more was accomplished than anyone imagined possible. The issue in the systems approach as much as in the individual approach is seldom the maximum distance covered and usually a minimum change in direction. As in sailing the Albatross in a White Squall, at first the change seems so minute as to be insignificant. Over time, those few degrees of difference stretch into significant directional consequences.  Even though we are constantly reacting to immediate and emergency situations, we take time to think through and plan strategically long-range responses to human pain. Adrenaline is one of the hormones that are critical to help us fight back or flee in the face of danger. Increased adrenaline was responsible for our participants’ dramatic rise in heart rate and blood pressure while listening to their trauma narrative. Under normal conditions people react to threat with a temporary increase in their stress hormones. As soon as the threat is over, the hormones dissipate, and the body returns to normal. The stress hormones of traumatized people, in contrast, take much longer to return to baseline and spike quickly and disproportionately in response to mildly stressful stimuli. The insidious effects of constantly elevated stress hormones include memory and attention problems, irritability, and sleep disorders. They may also contribute to many long-term health issues, depending on which body system is most vulnerable in a particular individual.

We now know that there is another possible response to threat, which our scans are not yet capable of measuring. Some people simply go into denial: Their bodies register the threat, but their conscious minds go on as if nothing has happened. However, even though the mind may learn to ignore the messages from the emotional brain, the alarm signals do not stop. The emotional brain keeps working, and stress hormones keep sending signals to the muscles to tense for action or immobilize in collapse. The physical effects on the organs go on unabated until they demand notice when they are expressed as illness. Medications, drugs, and alcohol can also temporarily dull or obliterate unbearable sensations and feelings. However, the body continues to keep the score. Too much sand, not enough maids and mops—that was our presenting problem. By re-viewing and re-visioning what we see and what we do, we can transform an overwhelming take into a more manageable endeavor. It would be illusory and utopian to act with the belief that through one’s involvement all will work out well for everyone. The task of humanizing society is ongoing. No particular task matters officially; every particular task has a place in the swirling constellations of history. No one can do everything. Each one is called to do something. It is not incumbent upon us to finish the task, but neither are we free to desist. We can focus on the neurochemical and physiological disruptions that were so evident and make a case that some people are suffering from a biochemical imbalance that is reactive whenever they are reminded of a death or massacre like the one that happen in Orlando, Florida USA, on 12 June 2016, when a gunman shot 103 people, killing at least 50. We might then search for a drug or a combination of drugs that would damp down the reaction or, in best case, restore the survivors’ chemical equilibrium. Based on the results of our scans, some have begun investigating drugs that might make people less responsive to the effects of elevated adrenaline.

We can also make a strong case that the survivors of the nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida USA are hypersensitized to their memories of the recent past and that the best treatment would be some form of desensitization. After repeatedly rehearsing the details of the trauma they witnessed at the nightclub with a therapist, the survivors’ biological responses might become muted, so that they can realize and remember that that was then and this is now, rather than reliving the experience over and over. However, sometimes the experience of trauma gets in the way of being able to talk about the distressing feelings so they can be resolved. No matter how much insight and understanding we develop, the rational brain is basically impotent to talk the emotional brain out of its own reality. I am continually impressed by how difficult it is for people who have gone through the unspeakable to convey the essence of their experience. It so much easier for them to talk about what has been done to them—to tell a story of victimization and revenge—than to notice, feel, and put into words the reality of their internal experience. The dread of these horrible experiences persists and could be triggered by multiple aspects of daily experience. They have not integrated their experience into the ongoing stream of their life. They continue to be there, but do not know how to be here—fully alive in the present. In responding to human pain, we risk what is known for what is yet to be known. We give up safety for searching. We lose life for the sake of life. If we are to respond, then we risk that risk. To me, risking risk means trusting God! In that trust I respond…keep yourself free to pursue activities that really matter to you, such as creative pursuits, platonic friendships, playtime with pets or the children in your life, open yourself up to spiritual practice, travel, and safe adventure. Give your time generously to family and other relevant communities in your life. Take some time to observe, reflect, and consider whether people are bringing good into your life. And most importantly, love yourself.

The World’s Best Garden is the Love in your Heart

The World is full of religion, and full of misery and crime. People who have pleasant houses get indoor enjoyments that they would never think of but for the rain. The mind inherently tends to identify with whatever thought is present. Welcome the entire content of consciousness, allowing each experience of psychic material to arise complete with its attendant movements of sensation, emotion, and belief. Welcoming evokes insight into self-defeating patterns that are based on refusing to be with confusing, disorienting, overwhelming, or threatening psychic material. Grace and peace to you from God, the Father and the Lord Christ. May God, who loves us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. Everything God created is good, no matter who you love, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 6

xfcghjm,

In my enthusiasm for describing what is happening, I want to take care not to glamorize the results. While groups have taken root and blossomed in the center, they still struggle for existence on this Earth. More people are being touched by love, but the ramification of need continue to be horrendous. However, people within our system are stimulated and encouraged and enlarged and reconfirmed by their outside contacts. Mutual learning occurs. Professional competence develops. Attentiveness to human pain grows. Unanticipated beneficial consequences appear. Some retooling of responding skill is called for. Much ongoing support is essential. Intermittent reinforcement must occur. And out of the mix comes a little more healing, a bit more hoping, and a larger community of those who care. Even though we are rooted in a particular system, we give more and receive more than we ever imagined possible by virtue of crossing over the boundaries in collaborative responding. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 6

The Ghost demands blood-revenge, and it would seem to be out of character for an agent of good to engage in such a mission. Ghost is actually the devil’s emissary. However, we can act intentionally and not simply react spasmodically. We require skills in analyzing social contexts in order to determine the issue of greatest concern to those who are part of that situation. Beyond that, we require skills in assessing the relationship of various system to those issues and then strategizing with and for those systems in terms of healing human pain. Our objectives want to be realized within a specified period of time. The objectives must be concrete enough so that actual progress can be determined. Once clear about objectives, the group explores multiple possibilities by which those goals can be reached. New ways of acting are stressed as the key in strategic planning. Finally, detailed steps are outlined as to who does what, when, and where in order to complete the objectives.  #RyanPhillippe 3 of 6

Because of the intertwining of assumptions, objectives, strategies, and tactics, each of these areas is continually being revised in light on ongoing developments. In order to have some flesh and on these bare bones, let me describe one instance of application. The sense of community, when it is sound, gives people an equal sense of order. On the dance floor, people let go completely. In an instant, their inner feelings ascend the scale from apathy to love, and to their amazement, they suddenly begin to dance like they have always dreamed of. The music and rhythm and lights allow people to express love, joy, and even ecstasy. Their delight radiates to everyone. People stop to watch and they experience a oneness with their dance partner. They look in the eyes of the person they are dancing with and feel a connection. They are enjoying being human, and spreading love. They can hardly contain their joy and they feel more energy. Dancing is a peak experience and has been a way people have expressed happy emotions for centuries. A body diversely incorporating the vision often creates a community, and a reverent one. So if you want to feel good, and be happy, seek good experiences. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 6

Criticism exists because life—your life is endlessly fascinating, and one of the things many things that is mesmerizing about life is the sense of the oracular that we get from it. This order moves in circles, imitating the stars in their courses by intelligence and freedom. It produces not only the cycles of seasons and of days, but also, in human life, the cycle of prosperity. The circling of the immortal Heavenly bodies in the sky is the most eloquent symbol of the order and harmony of the nature that was originally intended for humans. Music has its traditional Platonic meaning of the musical arts, which include poetry (as distinct from the technical arts of painting and architecture), which means no matter where you are no matter how beautiful it is, nor what improvements may be required, music levels it all and makes the beauty of your dreams shine as bright as the Sun. Music symbolizes the hidden sympathy between man and nature and haunts our soul. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 6

cgvhbjnkm

Music is what got people through the pains of slavery. Forget what some man might tell you about how God feels because he does not know for a fact. Keep your religion and have faith in God. The main thing to take away from the Bible is that we are to treat others how we want to be treated. We are to love and spread love. When you get in your car, the first thing you do is turn on the music because it makes you feel good, and God wants you to be happy and that is why we are presented with melodies and harmonies. If church is making you feel bad, or it is not resonating with you, then get up and walk out.  The Word of God is supposed to feel you with peace and love. I am here to get exercise and stay in shape. If you do not like looking at me, then take your demons and leave. I am not here to be executed by a traitor or be a disgraced scapegoat figure. Nothing in the World is more better and pleasing than friendship. Without it, the World would lose the Sun.  #RyanPhillippe 6 of 6

The Devil’s Technical World

Technology seems to be the official enemy of soul. When we speak of technology today we automatically think of electronic technology, so to pit technology against soul is the same as setting up the opposition of soul and electricity; they seem to have nothing to do with each other. So, we are faced with a large task, the mission first of seeing how this opposition arises and what it entails, and then seeing how it might be possible to recover an element of soul in technology.  #Techne refers to making of doing, and logos to know. Thus, technology concerns the kind of knowing involved in doing, and belongs to every act of making. The potter and the artist, for instance, employ technology; they know what they are doing, and without the sense of technology any consideration of art is pure romanticism. With electronic technology, however, a difficulty arises, for here doing is ahead of knowing due to the fact that, as we shall see, we really do not know the nature of electricity but nevertheless go ahead and use it for the development of a technical World.  #RandolphHarris 1 of 5

Because we do not truly know the nature of nuclear energy, a similar difficulty arises with its use, much like with the use of electricity. We do not know what forces are at play, but we go ahead and make use of them anyway. Now, the immediate response may be that our most sophisticated knowledge lies in these two realms of electricity and nuclear physics. However, this “knowledge” is all theoretical and involves application of views of reality that function contrary to the way we actually experience the World. Technology is to improve the human situation. Technology constitutes not just an addition or supplement to the World, but an entirely new reordering of the World by being forgetful of the actual World and imposing on it an alien form. Remember Narcissus? He is an adolescent, pride-filled individual loved by Echo, the nymph who through certain circumstances has been brought to a condition in which she can only repeat the last words of each sentence she hears—that is the extent of her voice. Thus, if Echo hears someone say, “I love you,” she could only repeat, “love you.”  #RandolphHarris 2 of 5

Well, Narcissus will have nothing to do with Echo and she wastes away; only her voice remains. We can already see the suitability of the relation of Narcissus and Echo, for any statement Narcissus might make about the World is echoed back as a Narcissistic command from the World—“I Love you” comes back as “Love you.” Narcissus, we hear in the story, comes to a clear pool and therein sees an image, which he does not know to be himself, and he falls in love with this image of himself, which we can also take as a further manifestation of Echo.  While Narcissus seeks to slake his thirst another thirst springs up, and while he drinks he is smitten by the sight of the beautiful form he sees. He loves an unsubstantial hope and thinks that substance which is only his shadow. As a result, Narcissus wastes away in longing for the unsubstantial shadow; a flower is left, its yellow center girt with white petals. This myth corresponds as a story about technology, through which we fall in love with a shadowy replica or imitation of ourselves, exteriorized and echoing through the World.  #RandolphHarris 3 of 5

The exteriorized self lacks the substantiality of body, though it offers the shadowy hope of complete satisfaction. Technology then concerns the extension of ourselves into the World without the knowledge that this is happening. For example, with mechanical technology, parts of the body are extended into the World. The wheel is both an extension and an acceleration of walking. We, however, are unable to cope with the acceleration—it disturbs the senses. This disturbance is handled by anesthetizing the body, we begin to lose the immediate sense of the body.  With electronic technology the brain is exteriorized into the World, resulting in the autoamputation of thinking, and we enter the age of information which comes to imitate thought. And along with the imitation, or double of thought, comes the hope that this dummy thought will produce complete satisfaction. We can begin to see through electronic technology when we are able to feel that its naïve hope resembles to a very large extent the same experience as the longing for past; that is to say, the technological imagination touches upon the same psychic domain as nostalgia; they both involve fantasies of infantilism.  #RRandolphHarris 4 of 5

The memory of being unconscious, fully immersed in the World, and completely taken care of is the same as the hope for a future World in which technology will provide these same benefits. That is to say, technology, when enacted without conscious knowledge of what is involved, is not progress but regression. As social media replaces the human connection, more and more people become very ignorant and spy of people and think they know them when they do not. Finding the soul of technology requires that this confusion be clarified, this false hope abandoned, in order to diminish an inflated view of what technology is about and to locate its own limited domain. Every man may, by examining his own mind, guess what passes in the minds of others. When you feel that your own gaiety is counterfeit, it may justly lead you to suspect that of your companions not to be sincere. The selfishness of a man’s nature soars triumphant above all other considerations, in a time of war; and life becomes as small a subject of consideration as any one of its circumstances. Have you ever seen I am picking up the missing for you in a night spring breezing in the yard full of moonlight, I miss you very much. Time can change a lot of things except for my memory of you never change. #RandolphHarris 5 of 5

Pray for Orlando and Pray for Humanity

People who are very upset sometimes say that are losing their minds. In technical terms, they are experiencing the loss of executive functioning. A lot of people seem to think it is cool to bully others and push them to the point of having a psychotic break, some think it is fun to see people suffer and in pain and make them relive traumatic memories. On the morning of 12 June 2016, at 2.02am, Omar Mateen, age 29, of Fort Pierce, Florida USA, pledged allegiance to ISIS, a radical group, and gunned killed 50 people in a gay nightclub in Orlando, injuring 53 others. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 6

Omar-Mateen-Pulse-Orlando-Nightclub

This is being called the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States History. It is not funny to terrorize or bully others for fun because when something reminds traumatized people of the past, their right brain reacts as if the traumatic event were happening in the present. However, because their left brain is not working very well, they may not be aware that they are re-experiencing and reenacting the past—they are just furious, terrified, enraged, ashamed, or frozen.  #RyanPhillippe 2 of 6

vbnm,.

Basically, when a person is pushed to a psychotic break, they lose their humanity and many have no idea what they are doing. So think about the innocent people that could get hurt as a result of the game you enjoy to play. I know some reporters and others think they have a right to do as they please and upset others, but there are consequences for relentless harassment. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 6

catch-hell-image-ryan-phillippe-stephen-louis-grush

And it is not only up to the government to take action, but employers need to also check their employees who they know are work place bullies and have ongoing behavioral problems so that innocent lives are spared. This is serious. It is not a time to joke around. After the emotional storm passes, they may look for something or someone to blame for it. They behaved the way they did because you were ten minutes late, they saw two guys kissing, someone raped their spouse again, or is cheating on them, or because you burned the potatoes, or because you “never listen to me.” #RyanPhillippe 4 of 6

Miss-Fabulous-aaliyah-31078570-1597-2560

Of course, most of us have had misplaces anger, but we have never gone to the level that Omar Mateen did. We usually cool down or find a healthy way to defuse our anger, and can hopefully admit our mistake. Trauma interferes with this kind of awareness. Fourteen years after the death of their baby girl, Aaliyah’s people still experience the tragedy because people still make fun of her death and slander her. The original sensations—the sounds and images from the accident—are still stored in their memories.  #RyanPhillippe 5 of 6

fghj

When these sensations come to the surface, they can activate an alarm system, which might cause those who care to react as if they were back at home being told that their daughter had died. The passage of fourteen years was erased. The sharply increased heart rate and blood pressure readings still reflect the physiological state of frantic alarm family members, friends, and even some fans feel.  #RyanPhillippe 6 of 6

Speechless Horror—Trauma is Preverbal

He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by the angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the World, was taken up in glory. All trauma is preverbal. Do you not remember when I was with you I used to tell you these things? And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work. Shakespeare captures this state of speechless terror in Macbeth, after the murder of king’s body is discovered: “Oh horror! Horror! Horror! Tongue nor heart cannot conceive nor name thee! Confusion now hath made his masterpiece!” Under extreme conditions people scream obscenities, call for their mothers, howl in terror, or simply shut down. Victims of assaults and accident sit mute and frozen in emergency rooms; traumatized children lose their tongues and refuse to speak. Photographs of combat soldiers show hollow-eyed men staring mutely into a void.

The most important imaginative impact that physical nature has on us is a sense of alienation. There is nothing in it that seems intelligent, moral, or specifically responsive to human needs. Man imposes his own way of life on nature, and transforms it into something with a human shape. Even years later, traumatized people often have enormous difficulty telling other people what has happened to them. Their bodies re-experience terror, rage, and helplessness, as well as the impulse to fight or flee, but these feelings are almost impossible to articulate. Trauma by nature drives us to the edge of comprehension, cutting us off from language based on common experience or an imaginable past.

There are in consequence two levels of nature: an upper level of human nature and a lower level of physical nature. We are born into the latter World, but do not really belong to it. It is natural to man to be moral, civilized, and socially disciplined; it is unnatural to him to live like the animals. Man’s present relation to nature can hardly be expressed except by paradox. Certain human qualities, such as the chastity, are natural, on the human level of nature; the innocence with which animals copulate is natural to them, but impossible for human beings. The nature God had originally planned for man was that of the Golden Age or the Garden of Eden: this was lost at the Fall, but in some measure is recreated by the disciplines of civilization, morality, religion, and the arts.

Man is subject to death, and on the physical level of nature there can be no more natural event than death. Yet death was not a part of the order originally planned for man, and in that context death is unnatural, sin is even more so. This does not mean that people cannot talk about tragedy that has befallen them. Sooner or later most survivors, like veterans, come up with what many of them call their cover story that offers some explanation for their symptoms and behavior for public consumption. These stories, however, rarely capture the inner truth of the experience. It is enormously difficult to organize one’s traumatic experiences into a coherent account—a narrative with a beginning, a middle, and an end.  #RyanPhillippe 4 of 6

When words fail, haunting images capture the experience and return as nightmares and flashbacks. In contrast to the deactivation of Broca’s area, in the frontal cortex the brain that plays a critical part in putting our thoughts into words, another region, Broadmann’s area 19 li up in our participants. Brodmann’s area 19 of the brain is a region in the visual cortex that registers images when they first enter the brain. We were surprised to see brain activation in this area so long after the original experience of trauma. Under ordinary conditions, raw images registered in area 19 are rapidly diffused to other brain areas that interpret the meaning of what has been seen. Once again, we were witnessing a brain region rekindled as if the trauma were actually occurring.

Other unprocessed sense fragments of trauma, like sounds and smells and physical sensations, are also registered separately from the story itself. Similar sensations often trigger a flashback that brings them back into consciousness, apparently unmodified by the passage of time. However, we ought to always thank God for our lives and the people in them because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. Now, may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all. How tranquil! How quiet! What silvery moonlight! Where are you, my dear? When can we sit together by the window enjoying this quiet tranquil evening? In my heart there is a secret. It is contained in only four words—I miss you sorely.

Haunted Memories of Vermont

I had just finished a study on how trauma is remembered, in which participants repeatedly told me how upsetting it was to be suddenly hijacked by images, feelings, and sounds from the past. When several said they wished they knew what trick their brains were playing on them during these flashbacks, I asked eight of them if they would be willing to return to the clinic and lie still inside a scanner while we recreated a scene from the painful events that haunted them. To my surprise, all eight agreed, any of them expressed their hope that what we learned from their suffering could help other people. With a carefully constructed script, which recreated their trauma moment to moment, we deliberately tried to collect just isolated fragments of their experience—particular images, sounds, and feelings—rather than the entire story, because that is how trauma is experiences. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 8

During the experience, the participant where also asked to describe a scene where they felt safe and in control. One person described his morning routine of sitting on the porch of a farmhouse in Vermont overlooking the hills. The estate was private and perfectly suited at the end of a town maintained road to capture views of the Mettowee Valley and Green Mountain National Forest. It was 642 acres, which lead up to Spruce Peak, and also had a two-acre pond surrounded by pristine fenced pasturelands. The property was beautifully landscaped with gardens, an attached barn, outdoor fireplace, and a covered porch. The estate also had a separate guest house and caretaker’s quarters. But the excitement was by no means over. The estate was located at 864 Rogers Road in Rupert, VT 05768. As antiques and artifacts and artifacts arrived—so did something else. Something with an ornery desire to push people around.  #RyanPhillippe 2 of 8

Ben reported inexplicable footsteps and cold air currents, and even when his parents were gone, he knew he was not along. He was sixteen years old and getting ready for bed. He heard his father and mother telling at each other, but they had just left to go into town for dinner with friends at Brasserie L’Oustau, which was a fancy French restaurant. He was frightened and his stomach was in a knot. Ben and his younger brother Justin and his sister Paris were huddled at the top of the stairs. Ben looked over the banister and could not see anything. The house was pitch black. Suddenly, they could hear crying, spitting, and hissing like an animal was in the house and distressed. His face was flushed ad he felt hot all over. Then sudden, they heard something running to the dining room, and what sounded like his fathering saying, “Bon appetite, bitch!” then sound of glass breaking. He yelled, “Stop,” and rushed down stairs to see what happened. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 8

When Ben got to the dining room and turned on the lights, he saw his mother’s antique Chinese Rose Medallion Vases had been shattered ($64,500.00). Ben quickly rushed out of the formal dining room closing the doors behind him, but as fast as it could close the door, it would fly back open. “Stop this, I don’t have time!” he shouted. It stopped, but then he heard footsteps behind him. He turned, but there was no one there. (Surely a classic case of a ghost having the last word.) Then heard someone run upstairs and the TV breaking as it went silent. Ben’s little brother and sister hid in the closet, as he stood there frozen in fear, his heart was pounding and he suddenly started trembling, as a floozy in old fashioned finery had startled them by appearing out of nowhere, sitting down at the piano—a relic from an old whorehouse—and began to plink away. He figured that maybe the antiques were cursed and a spectral couple, a prostitute and pimp, were attached to the objects. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 8

Ben believed that the evil influence was also emanating from the house, which had belonged to a gay couple. The two had not yet married and the older gentleman, Dennis, who was 45, had suffered a heart attack, fell down the stair and busted his head. Ben figured his blood must have triggered a curse because after Dennis, died, the family took the house and kicked his younger boyfriend, Jesse, out and sold it to Ben’s parents.  The younger guy also died from a heart attack shortly after college graduation. At this first session, we explained to Ben the purpose of the radioactive oxygen the participants would be breathing: As any part of the brain became more or less metabolically active, its rate of oxygen consumption would immediately change, which would be picked up by the scanner. We would monitor their blood pressure and heart rate throughout the procedure, so that these physiological signs could be compared with brain activity. Ben explained that his life had changed from being cheerful and the life of the party into a haunted and depressed isolation filled with depression and self-blame. He moved to California because life on the ranch had become intolerable, even hiding behind his school work, he could not make it through the day. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 8

I was standing outside the scanner as Ben underwent the procedure and could follow his physiological reactions on a monitor. The moment we turned the tape recorder on, his heart started to race, and his blood pressure jumped. Simply hearing the script activated the same physiological responses that had occurred during his stay at the estate. After the recorded script concluded and Ben’s heart rate and blood pressure returned to normal, we played his second script: getting out of bed and brushing his teeth. This time his heart rate and blood pressure did not change. As he emerged from the scanner, Ben looked defeated, drawn out, and frozen. His breathing was shallow, his eyes were opened wide, and his shoulders were hunched—the very image of vulnerability and defenselessness. We tried to comfort him, but I wondered if whatever we discovered would be worth the price of his distress.  #RyanPhillippe 6 of 8

When the images were composed of Ben’s brains scans during the procedure, there were some puzzling dots and colors on the scan, but the biggest area of the brain activation—a large red spot in the right lower center of the brain, which is the limbic area, or emotional brain—came as no surprise. It was already well known that intense emotions activate the limbic system, in particular an area within it called the amygdala. We depend on the amygdala to warn us of impending danger and to activate the body’s stress response. Our study clearly showed that when traumatized people are presented with images, sounds, or thoughts related to their particular experience, the amygdala reacts with alarm—even, as in Ben’s case, years after the event. Activation of this fear center triggers the cascade of stress hormones and nerve impulses that drive up blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen intake—preparing the body for fight or light. The monitors attached to Ben’s arms recorded this physiological state of frantic arousal, even though he never totally lost track of the fact that he was resting quietly in the scanner. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 8

Our most surprising finding was a white spot in the left frontal lobe of the cortex, in a region called Broca’s area. In this case, the change in color meant that there was a significant decrease in that part of the brain. Broca’s area is one of the speech centers of the brain, which is often affected in stroke patients when the blood supply to that region is cut off. Without a functioning Broca’s area, you cannot put your thoughts and feelings into words. Our scans showed that Broca’s area went offline whenever a flashback was triggered. In other words, we have visual proof that the effects of trauma are not necessarily different from—and can overlap with—the effects of physical lesions like strokes. The goal of God’s work is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but do not know what they are talking about nor what they so confidently affirm. #RyanPhillippe 8 of 8

Constant Craving—the Warlock’s Thorn

nm,

No one knows till the time comes, what depths are within them. Both fortune and misfortune have their respective places unforgettable. Whatever befalls us, we should not be overjoyed nor downcast. By getting people involved in their life experience intentionally and intelligently, we reduce the drain of their having to become involved resentfully and reactively as a result of unanticipated crises. Timing constitutes a crucial variable in routines of responding. It includes not only the developmental clock, but also the circumstantial clocks. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 12

Special circumstances call for special caring. Where loss has come, we know that holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries all act to open the floodgates of grief. These are events in which the pain and the sadness again break into consciousness. These are moments when unfinished grief work can be continued most profitably. To be present to another in those times heals far more than to be around at other times. Even in dealing with expected emergencies, we are not constricted to picking up the pieces in desperation. We are freer to work out more satisfying patterns with deliberation. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 12

People may really have in them some vocation which is not quite plain to themselves. The brain-disease model overlooks four fundamental truths: our capacity to destroy one another is matched by our capacity to heal one another. Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well-being; language gives us the power to change ourselves and others by communicating our experiences, helping us to define what we know, and finding a common sense of meaning. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 12

We have the ability to regulate our own physiology, including some of the so-called involuntary functions of the body and brain, through such basic activities as breathing, moving, and touching; and we can change social conditions to create environments in which children and adults can feel safe and where they can thrive. You cannot be angry with others for seeing the light in which you so strongly see in yourself. Even through the darkest phase, be it thick or thin, always someone marches brave here beneath my skin, and constant craving has always been.  #RyanPhillippe 4 of 12

The darkest and most contemptible ignorance is that of not knowing oneself. When we ignore these quintessential dimensions of humanity, we deprive people of ways to heal from trauma and restore their autonomy. Being a patient, rather than a participant in one’s healing process, separates suffering people from their community and alienates them from an inner sense of self. Given the limitations of drugs, I started to wonder if we could find more natural ways to help people deal with their post-traumatic responses. Justin was an appealing, but elusive young man. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 12

He really wanted a partner, but he could not seem to get anything started. When I asked Justin if he was committed to doing the work it would take for him to find a partner, he was enthusiastic. “You got it! I am going to be here, no fear. Definitely! I am going to make it to every appointment this month and next and the next. You have got my word.” Maybe a great magnet pulls all souls towards truth or maybe it is life itself that feeds wisdom to its youth. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 12

Justin was a complex person who very rarely felt comfortable inside his own skin. Generally, he was tormented by being unable to stick to any given plan. He could not follow through, whether it was a plan to move to another part of the country or go back to school, or even just plan to get a cup of coffee with a friend. He was reluctant to make choices, from something as small as choosing what movie to see, to something more significant like signing a lease for an apartment or getting a full-time job. Because of his style of restlessness and avoidance, Justin could not even get close to starting an intimate relationship. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 12

Miraculously, Justin did not do drug nor drink. However, said that he could not concentrate on one person, changing his mind every few minutes about what he wanted to do next, or thinking about someone or something else, instead of staying focused in the present moment. As soon as he settled down physically, he would begin to think of something else he should be doing instead. Because of his extreme agitation and trouble with committing to the moment, he would precipitously leave whatever he was supposed to be dong, abandoning people in his casual encounters such as coffee dates with friends. As you might imagine, his attempts to date were disastrous. #RyanPhillippe 8 of 12

xfcgvhbjnm,

It seemed clear that Justin was suffering from attention-deficit disorder and extreme anxiety, the support provided by medication and anxiety-focused behavioral modification therapy did not seem to help him approach intimacy with a partner. As I got to know Justin better, I began to understand that despite his hyperactive avoidance patterns, he had a lot going for him. He was an optimistic, loving person who sincerely wanted to find relief from the self-sabotaging behavior that kept him running in circles. #RyanPhillippe 9 of 12

Justin was capable of changing, but not until he was ready to understand how his distancing style controlled his life. It would require both willingness and openness to new insights and new activities before he would be able to take his first steps in successfully challenging his relationship issues. Every man may, by examining his own mind, guess what passes in the minds of other. When you feel that your own gaiety is counterfeit, it may justly lead you to suspect that of your companions not to be sincere. Success can be ensured only when you turn your complaints of environments into the strengths to strive for the better. #RyanPhillippe 10 of 12

Self-knowledge is thought by some not so easy. Who knows but for a time you may have taken yourself for somebody else? Stranger things have happened. The nervous system retains some of the experiences it has, and this produces changes in our behavior. Maintaining what exists consumes so much energy on the part of the individual, and it takes a lot of extra energy to generate a significant system change. We have felt limitations when exposed to excessive scrutiny of others; also, each of us are unique assets. Too close association makes some kinds of confrontation more difficult. #RyanPhillippe 11 of 12

The presence of outside people quickens the brain activity and can over stimulate some, and causes concrete human pain and complicated system problems. Whereas too much abstract discussion dulls and distorts the entangling web of personal maintenance and unravels the fabric of our person requirements. The immersion in Real-World hurt sobers the romanticism of our Ideal-World hopes. Let us link the past and the future with our present paces. Let us turn life into a dream of science and then turn the dream into reality.  #RyanPhillippe 12 of 12
