Unconscious Desires

If we say the script follows or matches a fairy tale, we risk invoking Procrustes. The therapist picks out a fairy tale prematurely, and then stretches the patient or cuts him down so that he will fit it. Procrustes is very much in all the behavioral sciences. The scientist has a theory, and then stretches, cuts down, or weighs the data to match it, something by overlooking hidden variables, sometimes by ignoring items by overlooking hidden variables, sometimes by ignoring items that do not fit, or even at times manipulating the data with flimsy excuses so that they will fit better. Procrustes is most active at clinical staff conferences, where there is no control match at all, so that the situation is wide open for speculations, bright ideas, orthodoxy, and authoritative pronouncements ex cathedra. In order to cut down on the casuistry and sophistry of such conferences, each one should include two cases with similar histories, preferably one without any apparent pathology along with that of the patient. It is amazing how closely the “case history” of many well-functioning, productive person can resemble the “case history” of a psychiatric patient. That is to say, for every schizophrenic with a certain kind of upbringing, there appears to be a non-schizophrenic with the same upbringing. It should be noted that most staff conferences are based on an unstated but ever-present assumption: “The patient is sick, and our job is to prove it and then find out why he is.” Staff meetings can become much more interesting by reversing this to read: “The patient is not sick, and our job is to prove that and then find out why he is not.” #RandolpHarris 1 of 19

However, some patients who have been presented give concrete and abundant evidence in their behavior of a serious maladjustment and one long duration. If ever, the diagnosis of psychopathic personality can seldom be made with confidence except on such a record. Many patients at some time in their lives steal, cheat, lie, forge checks, indulge in foolish or destructive conduct, behave regrettably while drinking, and engage in unfortunate or paradoxical pleasures of the flesh. It can hardly be denied that some of the most stable and admirable of people have, during the course of achieving maturity, done all these things and worse. One important point that distinguishes the psychopath is his failure to learn and adopt a better and more fulfilling pattern of life. Another and perhaps a more fundamental point, which will be elaborated subsequently, is that psychopaths give a strong impression of lacking the fundamental responses and emotional susceptibility which probably play a dominant part in helping other people avoid this type of maladjustment. It is, perhaps, worthwhile for us to consider now a patient whose record so far may not establish him beyond question with our group of those clinically disabled, but whose inmost reactions, in so far as one can judge them, strongly indicate that his disorder is the same and that his subsequent career will unmistakably place him. #RandolphHarris 2 of 19

Not long ago, his parents made an appointment for him by mail. They accompanied him from a thriving community in Southern Sacramento where for the last sixty years, the members of this family had been sober and respected citizens. There was a good deal of pride in these people, not a vain or pretentious self-esteem but a modest dignity that seemed to be cherished more as a responsibility than as an ornament. These parents were truly concerned about their son. A dozen or more letters and reports from school teachers, from the family physician, the rector of the church, the scoutmaster, a high school coach, et cetera, arrived before the patient. From this material came many facts and opinions. The patient’s remote antecedents had lived in or about San Jose, California in colonial times. They had never been famous for wealth or political influence, but in the Revolutionary War, as well as in the War Between the States, they had played a part which rooted them deeply in sectional traditions of distinction. In Sacramento, where this branch of the family moved almost twenty years before the present century, they had established a good name and a sound, unsnobbish sort of prominence. Unlike the fictional Southerners preoccupied with (frequently exaggerated) glories of the past, the Webers had continued to live primarily in the present and to live rather effectively. One school teacher who had done graduate work in psychology gave a good deal of consideration to this boy’s name, which was Aryan. #RandolphHarris 3 of 19

As she had pointed out, an Englishman can be called Percival, Jasper, Evelyn, or Vivian without much risk, but in the ordinary American community such a name might endanger a boy’s soul. This young man had been christened Aryan Heinrich Rainer Weber, probably not as an extravagant gesture toward the exotic or to past glories, but almost as a matter of course. Such given names had been customary among these descendants of early Charleston Hugenots, and the present generation felt nothing conspicuous in what to them was so familiar and commonplace. In these parents, speculation probably never arose about how a German name might sound to the fellows who played football in the vacant lot by the gas-house and “rabbitted” sissies with brick-bats. In agreement with his thoughtful teacher’s final conclusion, I am inclined to believe that this name, despite its potential dangers, caused the patient little difficulty. Even before he began school, he was always called Aryan. And his family conformed to this custom. After his parents had been interviewed separately and together, Aryan came into the office. He stood about six feet tall, held himself well, and appeared more mature than would be expected of a boy still eighteen. He at once impressed me as being enviably at ease. Though not extraordinary in its features, his face was pleasant, candid, and alert. As our conversation progressed, indications of excellent intelligence soon appeared, along with suggestions of a character forceful but not undesirably self-assertive or aggressive. #RandolphHarris 4 of 19

Ayran expressed disappointment about having had to withdraw from college and seemed remarkably frank in discussing the causes of his predicament. His story was the same incomprehensible story already heard from his parents and corroborated by the several detailed reports. A forged check had brought Aryan before the dean. He did not deny his guilt, but in a straightforward way, seemed ready to meet the consequences like a gentleman. The dean was puzzled, not that a young man might forge a check, but that it should be this particular man with his fine record, his appearance of sincerity, and his brave way of handling a situation presumably painful and embarrassing. Several points made this incident difficult to explain. The check had been cashed at a little tavern by the gates of the college, a place virtually integral with the campus where students were intimately known to the cashier and the waitresses. The owner of this place, a college-life character for generations, prided himself on calling the freshmen by name and on his closeness to the boys. It would have been easy for Aryan to cash such a check at dozens of places where his changes of escaping detection would have been vastly better. He had, it would seem, picked the place where his misdeed could most easily be traced to him. Furthermore, he had not chosen as victim someone unlikely to find him out, but the father of a girl he had been dating regularly during the seven months he had been at college. In forging the name, he had taken no great care to disguise his handwriting or to make a good imitation of the real signature. #RandolphHarris 5 of 19

There was difficulty in conceiving of a possible motive. With the dean, Aryan seemed thoroughly at ease. In a manly, well-controlled manner, he expressed his profound regret, his willingness to make restitution or to submit to any penalty. The check amounted to only $394.84 and could scarcely represent an urgent need or something deeply longed for. Aryan’s allowance, while not injudiciously large, was a little more than the average among his fellows. Despite his apparent frankness, he could give the dean no substantial reason for the self-damaging act by which he had neither gained nor hoped to gain anything of consequence. During a prolonged consideration of the affair, Aryan remained so calm, so free from ordinary signs of guile and excuse-making, that those in authority could not dismiss the possibility of some point that this boy might, through honor or chivalry, be concealing. No definite hypothesis of this sort could be devised, but the dean, despite such plain indication for drastic action, decided to temporize. Meanwhile, another forged check, this time for $170.34, showed up. This was drawn on the account of a lady in his hometown, an intimate friend of his mother’s. While judgment was pending, two more forged checks were discovered—for $170.34 and another for $259.46. Even now, the authorities found it difficult to regard this boy as an ordinary forger. He showed nothing in common with people who are placed in the category of the delinquent. Instead of being expelled, he was allowed to withdraw from college. He had made a good record during his seven months as a freshman and was popular with the students. Letters were contributed in his behalf by the high school principal at home, by his minister, a former Sunday School teacher, a scoutmaster, and even by the mayor of his hometown. All these expressed confidence in Aryan as “a splendid young man of high moral standards,” “a regular fellow,” “a fine Christian character,” “a well-behaved and clean-minded boy who deserves every consideration.” #RandolphHarris 6 of 19

During our numerous interviews, Aryan seemed to express himself freely. “I just don not know why I did it,” he said at first. At other times, he said he must have been impelled by desire for money. As the subject was returned to from day to day, his explanation varied. “It seems there was some sort of an impulse I cannot account for,” he once suggested. A few days later, it was, “I just did not think what I was doing.” No one familiar with the whole material of these interviews would have difficulty in seeing plainly that none of these reasons were very pertinent. Aryan admitted he had not even spent the money. He had no particular need and no special plans that might call for extra cash. His statement about some impulse is, of course, interesting; but the more Aryan discussed this, the more evident it became that he was not referring to anything like compulsive behavior in the ordinary psychiatric sense. Apparently, he fell upon this remark as upon his other ever-varying explanations in a vague effort to fill out verbally a framework of cause and effect which, as human beings, we all tend to manufacture when we cannot find it in actuality. There was no specific, breathtaking, and unbearable drive to do this irrational act, and no vivid fulfillment in its accomplishment. He had done it as a lazy man might swat a fly. Aryan was discovering real motives in himself but reaching at random for plausible or possible reasons that might have influenced some hypothetical person to do what he had done. It was rationalization in the purest sense, but not adequate enough to convince the patient himself. #RandolphHarris 7 of 19

Among dozens of other possible explanations, he mentioned that shortly before one of his forgeries, he had received a letter from one of his friends in San Jose mentioning the friend’s plan for a weekend trip to San Francisco. Aryan recalled a feeling of envy and suggested that he might, childishly, have felt that he, too, would like to have a sort of treat or adventure or break in the routine. By getting this extra money, he would, in a vague way, be keeping up with his friend, having a little lark, or indulging himself in a sort of reward or bonus. Or he might think up some way to spend the money that would constitute an equivalent to his friend’s weekend of pleasure. Under discussion, this, too, broke down as a factor of much pertinence. The envious thought of his friend’s trip had been brief and trivial. It has not preoccupied him or exerted strong or persistent emotional pressure as sometimes such apparently illogical and inadequate factors do exert in human behavior. And he had neither executed nor continued to plan any adventure in which the money might be used or wasted. The patient realized that all the impulses he mentioned were without strength to drive him into a dangerous or even a mildly unpleasant act. The more one talked with him, the more plain it became that he had realized how readily such forgeries could be detected and laid at his feet and that he had, before and during the act, been far from unaware (intellectually) that serious and undesirable consequences were likely to follow. There was no question of Aryan’s having been, in the ordinary sense, merely thoughtless or impulsive. He was not negligent in reason and foresight, but somehow, the obvious, and one would think inevitable, emotional response that would inhibit such an act did not play its part in his functioning. There had been no anxious brooding over consequences, no conscious struggle against temptation or overmastering impulse. The consequences occurred to him, but rather casually, and he did not worry about them even to the point of carefully estimating his chances of getting away with the forgeries undetected, or just what penalties he might face. He drifted along, responding to rather feeble impulses but without adequate consideration of consequences. #RandolphHarris 8 of 19

This boy, as he clearly pointed out, had no inclination to leave college. He had been remarkably free of homesickness and, in fact, happier, he said, than ever before in his life. He had chosen the college himself, largely on the basis of renown and social prestige. Though very much smaller, it was regarded by many as more or less equivalent to Harvard or Yale. He had won a scholarship awarded by a civic group in the town where he lived, on the basis of character and all-around qualities rather than on mere superiority in grades. He had no difficulty in passing examinations and obtaining admission at the college of his choice. In this discussion, several points of interest emerged. Until his last year in high school, he had planned to go to Stanford. There had never been, he admitted, any real interest in military life, and he frankly stated he had never intended to remain in the army after graduation. The idea of wearing an impressive uniform and the most superficial aspects of being a Stanford student seem to have been almost his sole motive. In explaining his change of mind, he frankly spoke of his desire to be among wealthy and socially prominent people and pointed out the particular advantages of the place he had chosen. If not all, such motives, of course, influence in a way most people. However, this young man seemed influenced to a degree truly remarkable. As the discussion progressed, it began to appear as if such values alone affected him. In the ordinary climber or snob, it is usual to find this sort of dominant attitude only under concealment that fools the subject if not the observer. With Aryan, there seemed to be no awareness that such aims should not be given primacy, and, indeed, exclusive sway, or that there was reason to pretend otherwise. #RandolphHarris 9 of 19

In further talk along this line, his fundamental attitude began to shape up into something much less simple than that of the ordinary opportunist or the vulgar schemer. Something distinctly and almost terrifyingly naïve emerged behind a readily volunteered and not very appealing life aim. It became clear that this was far from a truly dominant and persistent aim. Like momentary apparel, it had been donned, somewhat as revellers may try on for a moment to discard them. Aryan was not a shrewd opportunist intently set on pursuing a policy of material success with little regard to ethics or esthetics. Gladly, and in a deep sense innocently and sincerely, he accepted such a scheme and such evaluations. And these motivations probably influenced his conduct more often than any other conscious motivation. However, even here, there was no persistence of aim, no goal regularly beckoning, no substantial emotional force driving, even in a poor or perverse channel, toward fulfillment. Such values prompted Aryan, but their influence was more than that of transient recurrent whims than of human-sized connation. This bright and pleasant young man volunteered information about numerous acts in the past which had not been detected. He had occasionally stolen, usually articles of little value, from friends and from stores. No evidence of any distinct motive or any strong thrill of adventure could be brought out in connection with the petty thefts. He had also, with gracious and “between us as gentlemen” approached, put pressure on a number of this father’s friends to “lend” him small sums which he never thought of repaying. During the previous summer, he had, by complicated and ingenious schemes, secured sugar from an African American man who made whiskey illegally. #RandolphHarris 10 of 19

In this way, he obtained several hundred dollars, nearly all of which he squandered aimlessly and unexcitingly while on house parties with a group he liked to impress. Through this connection, he gained access to relatively large quantities of gasoline and, by careful planning and clever execution, made off with a few gallons at a time until he accumulated enough to bring substantial sums on the dark web. Though a member of the Honor Council in high school, he had never hesitated to cheat on examinations. He not only did this when he felt he might otherwise make a bad mark, but also routinely somewhat in the manner of a gentleman paying respect to the conventions. This practice had not been officially detected or become widely known among his classmates. Aryan did not bring out these facts painfully and with reluctance. It was not as though he were taking advantage of an opportunity to unburden himself by confession. Apparently, he had never been burdened. Nor did he show that boastful relish sometimes seen in people who seem proud and defiant about the delinquent acts they confess. In a gentlemanly way, he seemed to be discussing ordinary matters of a conventional life. He had repeatedly spoken of his remorse about the forgeries at college and spoken convincingly of his resolution never to make such mistakes in the future. In telling of his earlier delinquencies, which had never been discovered, he did not spontaneously bring out an opinion that this sort of behavior also should be avoided. When reasons for this were suggested, he readily agreed. There seemed, however, to be little shame or real regret and no effective intention that would last much beyond the moment of its utterance. #RandolphHarris 11 of 19

Though a considerable number of delinquencies and examples of very badly adapted conduct emerged as this patient was seen over a person of time, it is not these in themselves that so strongly suggest he shows this disorder is very difficult to convey, for it came out in attitudes disclosed as he talked about his emotional relations, his principles, his ambitions, and his ideals. By citing concrete acts or failures to act, it is easier to demonstrate such things than by commenting on what has been merely spoken, and what from this and the accompanying expressions, tones, et cetera, has been sensed or surmised. It may be worthwhile, however, to attempt a few points. This attractive and fine-looking young man had been going out with girls for several years. Apparently, they found his attentions welcome. Though he sometimes spent the evening alone with a girl, he still preferred double-dating or getting together with several couples. He had almost entirely escaped the shyness and unpleasant self-consciousness that trouble so many boys in their teens. He had never attempted sexual relations and seemed to have less than ordinary conscious inclination in this direction. No overt homosexual inclinations could be brought out in ordinary interviews or with the patient under Amytal or hypnosis. For over a year, Aryan had been going regularly with the daughter of a millionaire who had recently moved to Sacramento from the Middle West. Paris was only sixteen years old. Though not an only child, she had been born very late in her parents’ lives, and after her sister and two brothers were almost adults. The siblings had long ago married, leaving her to grow up as the center of her ageing parents’ concern and attention. This situation may account for the early overprotection and domination Paris experienced and for her tendency toward social withdrawal and her deep and painful insecurity. #RandolphHarris 12 of 19

Her parents, by now well into their golden years, set in their ways, and out of touch with Paris’s world, sense something wrong and set out on this disastrous course of pushing her, managing her, and trying by an irresistible tour de force to make her precipitately into a reigning belle. A few years earlier, her mother had nagged her day and night about overexerting herself, had insisted that she have breakfast in bed and not arise until 10.30 A.M. She had also insisted that she take tomato juice between meals (for vitamins) and milk (for calories). There had also been arguments about taking a nap every afternoon, swallowing numerous vitamin pills or unneeded laxatives, and carrying out all sorts of quickish health rituals which had attracted the mother. Now, this frustrated, frightened, and unprepared girl was pushed suddenly into equitation instructions, tennis every other afternoon, private lessons in Italian, elaborate parties with imported champagne. The mother took her to New York and arranged some rather artificial frolics at the Paradise Club and Somewhere Nowhere NYC. There were also yachting parties during which this sensitive girl tried valiantly to make conversation and carry out the motions of gaiety from Sacramento to San Jose. Paris seemed like a gun-shy yearling pointer and promptly developed nocturnal enuresis. (I have reliable, first-hand information on Paris’s situation in addition to what came through the present case.) The more difficulty she showed in handling herself, the more vigorously her mother pushed her, and the more she suffered and showed her terror. Most of the young men herded by the mother’s almost ferocious efforts and by all sorts of indirect bribery to these overdone parties made almost open fun of Paris. Her uneasiness and dutiful but brittle efforts to carry out a false role led them to speak of her as a “snob.” #RandolphHarris 13 of 19

This good and essentially normal girl, in the midst of constant mockery which she, unlike her mother, often detected, found herself attended by Aryan. He was without mockery. Nor did he, like some of the condescending youths drawn by parental largess, attempt lovelessly to feel her chest and to initiate her into the intimacies of a soul kiss. Aryan behaved “like a gentleman.” He was cordial, polite, and he treated her mother and father with a respect that seemed properly deferential in contrast with many in that brash, immature gang who came for the handout and the opportunity for mockery. He was more acceptable also than the snide older men inclined to show her attention. Among these, she encountered a few partial and cynical homosexuals who apparently enjoyed any travesty on what ought to be a normal coming together of girl and boy. Paris did not know which ones were the homosexuals, scarcely even that there was such a thing as homosexuality, but she sensed under their superficial politeness what seemed like subtle attitudes of defeatism, condescension, and only formality where it is natural to seek warmth. They gently mocked her taste in reading and in music and were politely supercilious about her clothes and about how she rode a horse. After them, it was almost a joy to be with Aryan. He was obviously intelligent, and lightly and unpretentiously he expressed principles of the highest, truest order. Too much a child still and too backward to seek a mature heterosexual role, too inexperienced to recognize of even to imagine what a genuine lover might offer or seek, Paris found Aryan the most acceptable companion available. Unacquainted with the feelings and attitudes of young men in normal love, or even with milder but real interests of this sort, she had no frame of reference in which to evaluate her chief suitor’s monumental inadequacy. She had, in fact, little means of perceiving it. #RandolphHarris 14 of 19

Aryan himself discussed his girl without the slightest awareness that he lacked any requisite of a romantic lover or of a satisfactory husband. Both of Paris’s parents encouraged his attentions. An impressive mahogany speedboat and a new Cadillac convertible were virtually put at his disposal. He found himself not quite the possessor of these and of many other luxuries but conspicuously in the center of them. It would not be difficult to imagine such a situation turning an ordinary boy’s head, confusing him with grandiose fancies, and, perhaps, initiating a career of delinquency. Perhaps such an explanation is correct, but I am not convinced. Aryan was not dazzled and swept off his feet. He was not, it would seem, particularly excited. He expressed a liking for Paris and her family, and showed evidence of being attracted by the outer appearance of things in this rather glittering world. There was no indication that wild passions for wealth had been aroused and a steady young man lured off toward false goals. Nothing seemed capable of arousing any real drive or passion in Aryan, much less a wild one. The pseudo-ideals about wealth and prestige, and the half-heated impulses of which he spoke, had exited long before he knew Paris. They were, however, at best tepid and unsteady aspirations, not strong or really purposeful drives, not constantly beckoning temptations deflecting natural aims. Aryan might let himself drift toward a fortune, and even, when caprice stimulated him, paddle a bit toward this goal of effigy of a goal, but he was not the sort of man to swim with frantic vigor toward either positive or negative shores. Fortune hunting might come nearer to arousing him than another aim, but even this did not challenge him to life and human purpose or bring to birth a long-range plan of action. Even in this direction, he found nothing to which he could commit himself in actual emotion. #RandolphHarris 15 of 19

True humility requires that we learn from Copernicus that the human world is not the purpose or the center of the universe; that we learn from Darwin that man is a member of the animal kingdom; and that we learn from Dr. Freud that the human ego is not even master in its own house. Apart from psychoanalysis, there are no secular or scientific theories as to why man is the restless and discontented animal. The discontented animal is the neurotic animal, the animal with desires given in his nature which are not satisfied by culture. From the psychoanalytical point of view, these unsatisfied and repressed but immortal desires sustain the historical process. History is shaped beyond our conscious wills, not by the cunning of Reason but by the cunning of Desire. The riddle of history is not Reason but in Desire; not in labor, but in love. A confrontation with Marx will clarify Dr. Freud. It is axiomatic in Marxism to define the essence of man as labor. Dr. Freud has no quarrel with the Marxist emphasis on the importance of the “economic factor” in history: he formally praises Marxism for “its clear insight into the determining influence which is exerted by the economic conditions of man upon his intellectual, ethical, and artistic reactions.” For Dr. Freud, work and economic necessity are the essence of the reality-principle: but the essence of man lies not in the reality-principle but in repressed unconscious desires. No matter how stringently economic necessities press down on him, he is not in his essence Homo economicus or Homo laborans; no matter how bitter the struggle for bread, man does not live by bread alone. #RandolphHarris 16 of 19

Thus, Dr. Freud becomes relevant when history raises this question: What does man want over and beyond “economic welfare” and “mastery over nature”? Marx defines the essence of man as labor and traces the dialectic of labor in history till labor abolishes itself. There is then a vacuum in the Marxist utopia, unless history is never abolished, unless labor continues to be, like Faust, driven to ever greater achievements; some other and truer definition of the essence of man must be found. Dr. Freud suggests that beyond labor, there is love. And if beyond labor, at the end of history, there is love, love must have always been there from the beginning of history, and it must have been the hidden force supplying the energy devoted to labor and to making history. From this point of view, repressed Eros is the energy of history and labor must be seen as sublimated Eros. In this way, a problem not faced by Marx can be faced with the aid of Dr. Freud. Marxism is a system of sociology; the importance of the “economic factor” is a sociological question to be settled by sociologists; Dr. Freud himself, speaking as a sociologist, can say that in imposing repression, “at bottom society’s motive is economic.” The quarrel between psychoanalysis and “economic determinism” arises in the tacit psychological assumptions behind economic determinism, and therefore arises only when we pass from sociology to psychology, from the abstraction of “society” to the concrete human individual. The issue is not the importance of economics but its psychology. Marx himself, though always complicated, is not free from the tacit assumption, held generally by economic determinists, that the concrete human needs and drives sustaining economic activity are just what they appear to be and are fully in consciousness: “self-preservation” and “pleasure,” as understood by the utilitarians, summarize the psychological theory implied by the ingenuous invocation of categories like “economic necessity” and “human needs.” #RandolphHarris 17 of 19

However, the proof that human needs are not what they seem to be lies precisely in the fact of human history. The Faustian restlessness of man in history shows that men are not satisfied by the satisfaction of their conscious desires; men are unconscious of their real desires. Thus, a psychology of history must be psychoanalytical. Insofar as Marx faced this question at all, lacking the concept of repressed unconscious desires, he could only come up with a psychology of history which condemns man to be eternally Faustian and precludes any possibility of happiness. Marx needs a psychological premise to explain the unceasing bent for technological progress sustaining the dialectic of labor in history. Lacking the doctrine of repression—or rather, not being able to see man as a psychological riddle—Marx, as a sympathetic critic has shown, turns to biology and postulates an absolute law of human biology that the satisfaction of human needs always generates new needs. If human discontent is this biologically given, it is incurable. Quite specifically, not only “the abolition of history” but also an “economy of abundance,” as envisioned in Marx’s utopian phase, are out of the question. Hence the dark clouds of pessimism in the third volume of Capital, where he says: “Just as the savage must wrestle with nature, in order to satisfy his wants, in order to maintain his life and to reproduce it, so the civilized man has to do it in all forms of society and under all modes of production. With his development the realm of natural necessity expands, because his wants increase; but at the same time, the forces of production increase, by which these wants are satisfied.” #RandolphHarris 18 of 19

However, Marx’s assumption of a biological basis for “progress” in history really amounts to a confession that he is unable to explain it psychologically. Psychoanalysis can provide a theory of “progress,” but only by viewing history as a neurosis. By defining man as the neurotic animal, psychoanalysis not merely assumes man’s Faustian character but also explains why man is so. To quote Dr. Freud: “What appears…as an untiring impulsion toward further perfection can easily be understood as a result of the instinctual repression upon which is based all that is most precious in human civilization. The repressed instinct never ceases to strive for complete satisfaction, which would consist in the repetition of a primary experience of satisfaction. No substitutive or reactive formations and no sublimations will suffice to remove the repressed instinct’s persisting tension.” By the same token, psychoanalysis offers a theoretical framework for exploring the possibility of a way out of the nightmare of endless “progress” and endless Faustian discontent, a way out of the human neurosis, a way out of history. In the case of the neurotic individual, the goal of psychoanalytical therapy is to free him from the burden which compels him to go on having (and being) a case history. And the method of psychoanalytical therapy is to deepen the historical consciousness of the individual (“fill up the memory-gaps”) till he awakens from his own history as from a nightmare. Psychoanalytical consciousness, as a higher stage in the general consciousness of mankind, may be likewise the fulfillment of the historical consciousness, that ever-widening and deepening search for origins which has obsessed Western thought ever since the Renaissance. If historical consciousness is finally transformed into psychoanalytical consciousness, the grip of the dead hand of the past on life in the present would be loosened, and man would be ready to live instead of making history, to enjoy instead of paying back old scores and debts, and to enter that state of Being which was the goal of his Becoming. #RandolphHarris 19 of 19

GODISNOWHERE

To the generous mind, the heaviest debt is that of gratitude when it is not in our power to repay it. Every language in the world has a way of saying “thank you.” This is because gratitude is an inherent quality that resides within each human being, and is triggered and expressed spontaneously in a variety of different contexts. Gratitude crosses all boundaries—creed, age, vocation, gender, and nation—and is emphasized by all the great religious traditions. Gratitude is essentially the recognition of the unearned increments of value in one’s experience—the acknowledgement of the positive things that come our way that we did not actively work toward or ask for. Gratitude is a feeling that spontaneously emerges from within. However, it is not simply an emotional response; it is also a choice we make. We can choose to be grateful, or we can choose to be ungrateful—to take our gifts and blessings for granted. A thankful person is unmistakable. Gratitude shapes their speech — their sentences are threaded with kindness, positivity, and a quiet strength that uplifts everyone around them. People who live in thankfulness rise effortlessly; their progress is almost impossible to hinder. There is a lightness in the way they communicate, an ease that reflects humility and inner depth. They do not posture or boast. Instead, they carry a gentle self‑deprecating charm that makes them approachable, appealing, and deeply human. People who practice gratitude are attractive and admired. There is something magnetic about them. Such people exude strength, and they empower those around them. The Lord has promised, “He who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious.” People who have gratitude in their hearts cannot be bitter, resentful, or mean-spirited. #RandolphHarris 1 of 22

We should be thankful for the wonderful blessings that are ours and for the tremendous opportunities we have. We can be thankful to our parents, family, friends, and teachers. We should express appreciation to everyone who has assisted us in any way. We should thank our Heavenly Father for His goodness to us by acknowledging His hand in all things, thanking Him for all that He gives us, keeping His commandments, and serving others. We should especially thank Him for His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, for the Savior’s great example, for His teachings, for His outreaching hand to lift and help, and for His infinite Atonement. However, sooner or later, all of us experience times when the very fabric of our world tears at the seams, leaving us feeling alone, frustrated, and adrift. The doctrine that all men are made appears to conflict with a historical perspective on the nature and destiny of man: it appears to swallow all cultural variety, all historical change into a darkness in which all cats are gray. However, this objection neglects the richness and complexity of the Freudian theory of neurosis. In the first place, there are several distinct kinds of neurosis, each with a different set of symptoms, a different structure in the relations between the repressed, the ego, and reality. We are therefore in a position to return to the varieties and complexities of individual cultures if we entertain, as Dr. Freud does in Civilization and Its Discontents, the hypothesis that the varieties of culture can be correlated with the varieties of neurosis: “If the evolution of civilization has such a far-reaching similarity with the development of an individual, and if the same methods are employed in both, would not the diagnosis be justified that many systems of civilization—or epochs of it—possibly even the whole of humanity—have become ‘neurotic’ under the pressure of civilizing trends? To analytic dissections of these neuroses, therapeutic recommendations might follow which could claim a great practical interest.” #RandolphHarris 2 of 22

And furthermore, it is a Freudian theorem that each individual neurosis is not static but dynamic. It is a historical process with its own internal logic. Because of the basically unsatisfactory nature of the neurotic compromise, tension between the repressed and repressing factors persists and produces a constant series of new symptom-formations. And the series of symptom-formations is not a shapeless series of mere changes; it exhibits a regressive pattern, which Dr. Freud calls the slow return of the repressed. It is a law of neurotic diseases, he says, that these obsessive acts increasingly come closer to the original forbidden act itself. If we take it seriously, the doctrine of the universal neurosis of mankind therefore compels us to entertain the hypothesis that the pattern of history exhibits a dialectic not hitherto recognized by historians, the dialectic of neurosis. A reinterpretation of human history is not an appendage to psychoanalysis but an integral part of it. The empirical fact which compelled Dr. Freud to comprehend the whole of human history in the area of psychoanalysis is the appearance in dreams and in neurotic symptoms of themes—both ritualistic and mythical—in the religious history of mankind. The link between the theory of neurosis and the theory of history is the theory of religion, as is made perfectly clear in Totem and Taboo and Moses and Monotheism. And the link affects both ends linked. Dr. Freud not only maintains that human history can be understood only as a neurosis but also that the neuroses of individuals can be understood only in the context of human history as a whole. From the time when he wrote Totem and Taboo (1913), Dr. Freud says in Moses and Monotheism (1937), “I have never doubted that religious phenomena are to be understood only on the model of the neurotic symptoms of the individual.” #RandolphHarris 3 of 22

According to the analogy elaborated in Moses and Monotheism, “In the history of the species, something happened similar to the events in the life of the individual. That is to say, mankind as a whole passed through conflicts of a sexual-aggressive nature, which left permanent traces, but which were for the most part warded off and forgotten; later, after a long period of latency, they came to life again and created phenomena similar in structure and tendency to neurotic symptoms.” This analogy supplies Dr. Freud with his notion of the “archaic heritage”; mankind is a prisoner of the past in the same sense as “our hysterical patients are suffering from reminiscences” and neurotics “cannot escape from the past.” Thus, the bondage of all cultures to their cultural heritage is a neurotic constriction. And conversely, Dr. Freud came to recognize that the core of the neuroses of individual lay in the same “archaic heritage,” “memory traces of experiences of former generations,” which “can only be understood phylogenetically.” The repressed unconscious which produces neurosis is not an individual unconscious but a collective one. Dr. Freud abstains from adopting Dr. Jung’s terms but says, “The content of the unconscious is collective anyhow.” Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny (each individual recapitulates the history of the race): in the few years of childhood, “we have to cover the enormous distance of development from primitive man of the Stone Age to civilized man of today.” From this it follows that any theory of neurosis must ultimately include a theory of history; and, conversely, any adequate theory of history must take account of neurosis. The individual’s inner conflicts and the culture’s outer pressures are never independent phenomena. They shape and mirror one another. The man I shall call George was thirty‑three years old when I first encountered him, and I admitted him to a psychiatric hospital. He reported that his trouble was “nervousness,” though he could offer no clear account of what he meant by the term. His complaint, vague yet urgent, was itself a symptom — an expression of the diffuse anxiety that arises when personal history and cultural history converge in a single, troubled life. #RandolphHarris 4 of 22

George was remarkably self-composed, showed no indication of restlessness or anxiety, and could not mention anything that he worried about. He went on to state that his alleged nervousness was caused by “shell shock” during the war. He then proceeded to amplify on this in an outlandish story describing himself as being cast twenty feet into the air by a shell, landing in his descent astride some iron pipes, and laying totally unconscious for sixty days, during all of which he hovered between life and death. A physical examination showed George without any evidence of injury of illness. In fact, he was a remarkably strong and active man, six feet in height, 170 pounds in weight. Later, in an athletic meet held on the hospital grounds, he showed himself an exceptional sprinter and broad-jumper, surpassing many able competitors ten years younger than himself in these events. Prolonged observation and psychiatric study brought out no sign or suggestion of a psychosis or a psychoneurosis. Despite his original complaint of “nervousness,” he was at all times calm and without the slightest evidence of abnormal anxiety. He ate and slept well, did not complain of any worries, was free of phobias, compulsions, conversion reactions, tics, and all other ordinary neurotic manifestations. Records of this man’s career show that he has been confined in various mental hospitals approximately half the time since he became of age. In addition to periods ranging from a few weeks to six months at federal government institutions in Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida, he was also frequently sent by the Government to private psychiatric hospitals and invalids’ homes. Between these experiences, he spent a good part of his time in the local county jail or in other jails at Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, or other towns which he visited. He was taken in sometimes for drunkenness and disorderly conduct, at other times for writing bad checks, petty theft, reckless driving of automobiles, obtaining money under false pretenses, snatching the purse from a woman of the evening, taking possession of a house whose owners were off on vacation, et cetera. Extravagant but insincere threats to harm his wife and four children made after taking a few drinks and lunacy charges also accounted for a dozen or so arrests. #RandolphHarris 5 of 22

During all the observations at various hospitals mentioned above, as well as at a state mental hospital where George also spent a short time, no technical evidence of a psychosis or a psychoneurosis is mentioned. His wife and friends have repeatedly persuaded local authorities to consider him as mentally deranged and to have him sent to hospitals rather than let him face the various charges brought against him from time to time. On other occasions, when refused admission by hospitals that had already studied him more than once and declared him sane, competent, and not in need of psychiatric treatment, friends and relatives have had him arrested, prevailed upon local doctors to sign statements that he is deranged and dangerous, and brought pressure to bear so that hospitals, with the light in which the case was presented, had no choice but to readmit him. The doctors involved in such procedures, country practitioners for the most part, never mention technical evidence that would indicate a psychosis or a psychoneurosis as they are described in the textbooks. Such statements as the following are typical: “Something is decidedly wrong mentally. I don’t think I have ever come in contact with a man as unreliable as he is. He worries everybody that has fooled with him until they hate him. The County authorities are tired of boarding him as he is not a criminal.” (Family Physician.) “Everybody who comes in contact with him agrees that he should be confined permanently…very unreliable as to his word of honor.” (County Physician.) A physician who owns a private hospital located at a nearby town said, “We do not cater to his class.” He is described as frequently drinking whiskey to excess and as sometimes taking Veronal, Luminal, Amytal, and bromides to ease himself in the aftermath of a spree. Although there is no record of alcoholic hallucinations, many bizarre and notable actions are described when the patient has had something to drink: On a cold February day, he rushed, fully clothed, down to the creek and sprang in. After thrashing about, yelling and cursing to no purpose and creating a senseless commotion, he swam back to land without difficulty. One fine spring evening, he is said to have run entirely naked through the streets of the town. He once sat up all night under the house striking matches aimlessly. #RandolphHarris 6 of 22

Generally believed reports indicate that late one night he, with several drinking companions, succeeded in releasing a half-tamed bear from the cage in which it was kept at a filling station to attract trade. A good deal of fright, some civic uproar, and hasty precautionary measures ensued. Assiduous and painstaking effort by several local volunteers led to the bear’s relatively uneventful return to his cage. According to available information, the bear was not terribly dangerous but sufficiently so to make a man of anything like ordinary responsibility sharply retrain all impulses to loose him on the outskirts of an unprepared community. The patient denied having been a party to this exploit, but the evidence against him is strong. In view of this man’s failure to make any effort to conduct himself sensibly through many years, there is no wonder that many are found to say that he is of unsound mind. He has done no work, except for occasional periods when for a week or ten days, he would show considerable promise as an automobile salesman, clerk in a grocery store, soda jerker, bootlegger’s assistant, et cetera. It was not long before, in the language of an elderly uncle often called on to deal with these problems, he proceeded to “launch himself another pot-valiant and fatuous rigadoon.” After studies on his case were completed, and on the basis of his cooperative and technically sane behavior, he was given parole privileges. He promised, of course, not to drink or to break any other rule of good conduct and expressed many fine intentions positively and reassuringly. Six days later, he staggered into his ward and attempted to go to bed without being noticed by the attendant. On being found so plainly in his cups, he raged petulantly, first denied any contact with stimulants, and finally, with indignation, admitted having taken one-half glass of beer. His eyes were bloodshot, he could scarcely stand, and he spoke in wild, boastful, almost unintelligible accents. A bottle of cheap whisky was discovered hidden under his mattress. #RandolphHarris 7 of 22

According to the custom of the hospital, George was now confined to a closed ward where his superficial sanity stood out arrestingly from the delusional babbling and the blank-faced, staring inertia of his psychotic fellows. He was always intelligent and agreeable, frequently pointing out the obvious inconsistency of his being confined among “insane” people. Pleading important business downtown, he was, after three weeks, given a pass to go out in the care of a hospital attendant for a few hours. He returned in good condition, but when night came on, he refused to go to bed, cursed, and spat at the nurse who tried to advise him. His breath reeked of raw liquor, and a search disclosed a half-empty quart bottle in his pocket. The attendant who took him to town denied having allowed him to purchase whiskey and could only surmise in astonishment that the patient must have slipped off for a moment and obtained the bottle while pretending to go to the toilet. A few weeks after this incident, the patient’s wife came to town and asked to take him out on a pass, agreeing to assume full responsibility. When she returned him to the hospital, it was evident that he had drunk liberally, and the wife confessed herself as having been unable to deal with him. The next day, a man living near the hospital advised that he had fired a revolver at the patient on being alarmed by his behavior. As if trying to force his way in, George, after loitering about the premises boisterous and vaguely threatening, began to fumble at a window. The shot had not been aimed at George but only in his general direction in order to frighten him. This end was satisfactorily achieved, for at the report he made off in a clatter of undignified haste. #RandolphHarris 8 of 22

About a month later, on strong promises of good behavior, George was again given parole. Within a few days, he climbed over the fence and hired an automobile, which, after racing for a while about the road to no special purpose, he wrecked in the city streets and was taken to jail. This cycle of events was repeated several more times. The man was obviously not where he belonged when confined on a closed ward with extremely psychotic patients of the ordinary type. Just as plainly, he showed himself unable to remain on an open ward with mildly psychotic patients who succeeded in adapting themselves to a life of limited freedom. Finally, on being kept under close supervision for several weeks following a senseless and troublesome spree, he demanded his discharge in a well-written letter, emphasizing his sanity and the inappropriateness of his hospitalization. He was released accordingly. Six months later, he was sent back to the hospital from his local jail, where he had been confined after striking an African-American man with a poleaxe. He had, as was his wont, been drinking but showed little evidence of being affected by alcohol. The other man was walking peacefully by when our patient engaged him in a dispute about possession of the pavement. “Flown with insolence and [perhaps] with wine,” he found the other’s conciliatory attitude not to his taste, waxed more overbearing, and ended by felling his presumed adversary with a deft blow. He did not on this occasion seem to lose control of himself like a man in a genuine rage who might have struck blow after blow. His deed seemed prompted more by fractiousness and impulse to show off than by violent passion. Since only patients suffering from mental disorder in the commonly accepted sense are eligible, his application for admission was at first refused by the hospital. His wife and influential friends thereupon invoked higher authorities, who arranged for him to be taken. This time, he was again found to be free from all symptoms of recognized mental disorder and was classified as: (1) no nervous or mental disease; (2) psychopathic personality. He did not complain of nervousness as he had at the time of his first admission. Instead, he insisted that he was a sane and well man and demanded full privileges to come and go as he pleased, saying that the authorities who arranged for him to come to the hospital had promised him this. #RandolphHarris 9 of 22

It was plain that George regarded the hospital simply as an expedient by which he might escape the legal consequences of his behavior. After being kept for a few weeks on a closed ward, he was allowed to go out on the grounds alone with the understanding that after a few days, he would be discharged as sane and competent. He could not, however, keep out of trouble. On the third day of his freedom, he was seen by the guard driving at high speed through the gate in a car belonging to one of the physicians. Chase was offered, and after a lively race, he was overtaken about fifteen miles from the hospital, having battered in a fender and knocked off a headlight of the car on the way. It is hardly necessary to point out that this man had repeatedly been instructed in the rules to be observed while on parole, that he knew the driving of an automobile by a patient in this hospital to be a serious violation of his trust, not to speak of the theft, or the unauthorized borrowing he proclaimed it to be. When finally caught, he appeared as sane as before, showing no evidence of any episodic loss of his usual reasoning power. He had not been drinking when he took the automobile and, of course, the pursuit was too hot for him to obtain liquor while in flight, though in view of his previously demonstrated ingenuity and dispatch in fulfilling this want, it would scarcely have been surprising to find him properly raddled. On his return to the hospital, he did not show the slightest sign of remorse over having taken possession of and having succeeded in damaging the car belonging to a physician who had always been particularly for his deed he took as a matter of course, expressing neither gratitude nor satisfaction. In fact, he dismissed the whole matter as insignificant, and his prevailing attitude was that of a man generally ill used. Some weeks later, he was sent home. #RandolphHarris 10 of 22

About six months afterward, his wife sent an email to the hospital that she could no longer cope with her husband, whom she described as being still in such folly as that already recounted. He did not, however, arrive by train he boarded. It was subsequently learned that he got off along the way, obtained a few drinks, and made a clamorous nuisance of himself in the station until the police came to cut short his activities. A little later, he was readmitted following a series of misadventures in no way different from those already mentioned but including a period in Napa State Hospital. He was alert and rational and just as he had always been before, except for the presence of a urethral discharge of gonococcic origin. He gave a false account of his activities, saying that he had been working on a farm and had been in no trouble at all. The records showed that he had not turned his hand to make an honest dollar since he left and that a week had seldom passed without his buffoonish or antisocial activities arousing consternation in the neighborhood and bringing him to the attention of the police. He was freely communicative and scarcely waited for encouragement to explain how he came by his gonorrhea. The records show that after causing some commotion in town by maudlin or threatening outbursts on the streets and silly, pompous threats about harming his wife, he had been brought in, bedraggled and disconsolate, from a ditch where he lay and confined to jail. #RandolphHarris 11 of 22

The jail, George said, was crowded, and the jailor, who knew him to be a good fellow, placed him in a cell on the women’s section of the building. The bars of his cell were about six inches apart, and so, according to his story, he was separated from yet provocatively close to the women prisoners. These, his neighbors, were seven girls ranging in age from fourteen to twenty and awaiting transportation to the women’s reformatory. He said that at night, when the lights were out, these girls would disrobe and, coming to the bars, would entice him, calling him “Pretty Boy,” “Country Boy,” and otherwise teasing and challenging him until he began to indulge in sexual intercourse with them between the bars in order to make them leave him alone. He says that he continued this practice with each of them every night during the rest of his sojourn there, the transactions taking place always in the dark and through the separating barrier. From one or all of these women, he says he caught the gonorrhea which now troubled him. He appeared to be no little proud of this story which, however, is probably no more accurate than his stories of exemplary behavior and hard work or his frequently expressed intentions to conduct himself like a sensible person. During prolonged observation of him in the hospital, he showed himself more prone to drift about street corners and bars, to indulge in petty gambling or theft, to cadge and impose on chance acquaintances, or to raise some puerile and futile clamor than to seek intercourse with one woman, much less with many. #RandolphHarris 12 of 22

Since this last admission, his story has been the same as before. On recovering from gonorrhea, he was, after being found sane and competent, given freedom of the grounds. He soon left without permission and was found in the hands of the police. Back again on a closed ward, he was dissatisfied and, with irrefutable arguments, pointed out the incongruity of his being assigned to a place among men content to sit all day in silence staring blankly at nothing or who murmured incessantly that their heads were full of gold, radium, and diamonds, that they had no stomachs or intestines, that the Masons were playing on their sexual organs by radio, that they were sickened by the odor of the bells. It was here, however, that George had to be kept, a perfectly clear-minded person, neat, polite, and quick-witted, in striking contrast to his fellows, whose lips moved inarticulately as they responded to hallucinatory voices, and some of whom urinated and defecated on themselves, sought to eat dead roaches, et cetera. This was not, of course, an ideal environment for him. He was, therefore, replaced on the parole ward time after time, only to prove himself, after periods from a few days to a few weeks, unadaptable. When put on the closed ward among better-adjusted cases of schizophrenia or dementia paralytica, men who worked on farm detail or at woodwork, he took advantage of his situation and escaped. During much of his time in the hospital, it has therefore been necessary to keep him among the actively disturbed or badly deteriorated cases where supervision is complete, and possibilities of escape are limited. #RandolphHarris 13 of 22

When last heard from, he was again hospitalized. Opportunities are continually offered him to improve his situation. From time to time, parole is restored, and occasionally his wife takes him home on furlough. Always, however, he causes trouble for himself and others and always for no discernible purpose. The last news of him was that he violated his parole by leaving the hospital. After sustaining himself by his customary activities for a week or ten days, and staying clear of the police, he again came to grief. With the aim evidently of stealing a hen from a few fryers, or perhaps to evade pursuit, he slipped into an African American’s chicken house. Having brought along a bottle, and perhaps being delayed by needs to avoid detection, he drank injudiously. Next morning, he was found in the coop where he had apparently wallowed and groped through the night. Called by the farmer, attendants brought him to the hospital. Here on a closed ward, we find him, among helpless and irrational people, subject to the strict control and attention required for those who cannot direct themselves. Though he left school after completing the eighth grade, he writes letters which would do credit to a college graduate. In these, he insists on having his freedom, stating that his difficulties in the past have been minor and that he is ready and thoroughly able to settle down to an exemplary life. He often stresses the fact that his wife and children need his protection and support. His family history is entirely negative. Parents and grandparents were hard-working, sober folk, liked and respected in the little rural community where the present generation lives. One sister and three brothers are leading normal lives there. Although everyone’s situation is different, and the details of each life are unique, there is something that will take away the bitterness that may come into our lives. There is one thing we can do to make life sweeter, more joyful, even glorious. We can be grateful! It might sound contrary to the wisdom of the world to suggest that one who is burdened with sorrow should give thanks to God. However, those who set aside the bottle of bitterness and lift the goblet of gratitude instead can find a purifying drink of healing, peace, and understanding. As disciples of Christ, we are commanded to “thank the Lord our God in all things,” to “sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving,” and to “let our heart be full of thanks unto God.” #RandolphHarris 14 of 22

However, in some families, the relationships among the members are those of strangers among strangers. Everyone plays his or her part. The father is paternal, the mother does motherly things, and the children do their filial duties; not one knows the experience of the other. Their relationships with each other are impersonal. In my research in self-disclosure, I found many instances where the members of a family were completely ignorant of one another’s hopes and fears, likes and dislikes, problems and joys. They simply did not discuss “personal” things among themselves. The experience of feeling at a standstill in one’s relationships with friends, where the relationship does not seem to be “going anywhere,” is likewise common. “Where” can a relationship with another person “go” anyway? It is in the intimacy of personal relationships that an individual’s upbringing receives its most rigorous test. The ability to stay in growing relationships with a few others, in which a way as to continuously raise the level of each other’s existence, is what a healthy personality is about. When a healthy personal relationship exists, the two people communicate authentically with one another and stay in touch with each other’s perspectives. Their demands and claims upon one another are reasonable. They are actively concerned with one another’s growth and happiness. Each treasures the freedom of the other to be himself or herself and does not try to control the other. #RandolphHarris 15 of 22

No relationship begins this way, neither within the family, nor outside it. People make contact with each other as persons in many ways—through sheer physical nearness, as at home; through shared hobbies and interests; and through accidental meeting. According to one investigator, the first four minutes of any acquaintance are decisive for the fate of that relationship—whether it will move in the direction of greater intimacy or will remain distant and superficial. Once people have met, however, a period of mutual exploration begins. The desire to know the other as that person is, rather than seems to be, motivates the mutual “interviewing” that goes on between persons. Getting to know one another is like unveiling a mystery that may, in the future, bind the two people in friendship, or it may serve to terminate the acquaintance. Scientific knowledge can be extended indefinitely, but it will not be able to do more than help body and, to lesser extent, mind: salvation it cannot give us. Those intellectuals who limited themselves only to the knowledge of present-day science and to the methods of present-day research have only themselves to blame for the world-wide menace of self-destruction at which they know shudder. It is commonly assumed that there is some sort of legislation which gives psychoanalysts the irrevocable right to define a curse. This is not so. Even if there were such legislation, they would be in a difficult position, because their definitions (which are almost synonymous with the termination of treatment) are not clearly stated or unanimously accepted among themselves. #RandolphHarris 16 of 22

Their criteria can usually be boiled down to a pragmatic statement which applies equally well to those therapies which are not psychoanalysis: exempli gratia, “The patient is cured when he is symptom-free and can work and love effectively.” Script analysis can accomplish that at least as frequently as psychoanalysis can. Script theory is one of the most elegant and far‑reaching ideas in modern psychology. At its core, it explains how a human life becomes patterned — how early experiences, emotional conclusions, and unconscious decisions form a story that a person continues to reenact, often without realizing it. Script theory proposes that every person develops a life script: a semi‑conscious plan for how they will behave, relate, succeed, fail, love, suffer, and ultimately make sense of their existence. This script is not written in words but in experiences, especially early ones. The child interprets their environment and makes proto‑decisions about how life works. These decisions harden into a script. A script is the grammar of a person’s emotional life. Script theory is powerful because it links individual psychology with social history. A person’s script is not created in isolation; it is formed within a cultural, familial, and historical context. This is why your earlier line — a theory of neurosis must embrace a theory of history — is exactly right. Scripts are personal, but they are also historical artifacts. To further highlight this illustration, Dr. Freud’s father’s motto was: “Something will turn up,” and that was a precept Dr. Freud devoutly believed in, as his letters show. #RandolphHarris 17 of 22

And in the City of Sacramento, something does always turn up. Sacramento was still half‑asleep when the call came in—one of those raw, predawn hours when the city feels suspended between night and morning. But inside Station 4, the firefighters were already moving. Sacramento Fire is one of the busiest departments in the nation, and its crews live in a constant state of readiness. Calm is never trusted; quiet is never assumed. It is only the breath before the next emergency. At 3:58 a.m., the alarm shattered that breath. “Multiple reports of fire—possible arson. Occupants trapped.” Captain Lukas Reinhardt was on his feet before the second tone sounded. Tall, disciplined, and steady as steel, he had led his crews through infernos that would have broken lesser departments. He pulled on his coat, snapped his helmet into place, and climbed into Engine 4 as the doors thundered open. The streets were empty, washed in the pale glow of streetlights. But ahead—just beyond the downtown corridor—a violent orange pulse rose into the sky. “God,” Captain Reinhardt muttered. “It’s already running.” When they arrived, the building looked like a torch jammed between two aging storefronts. Flames punched through the windows, roaring upward in sheets. Smoke rolled across the street in thick, suffocating waves. Neighbors stood outside in panic, shouting that people were still inside. Captain Reinhardt did not hesitate. “Lines to the front! Ladder to the Bravo side! Move!” His crew surged forward, each motion sharp and practiced. Sacramento firefighters earn their reputation through sheer volume—fires, medical calls, rescues, disasters. They do not waste seconds. They do not wait for certainty. They act. #RandolphHarris 18 of 22

Inside, the heat was brutal. The hallway was already collapsing, flames chewing through the old wooden frame. Reinhardt led the advance, sweeping each room, calling out over the roar. On the second floor, they found her—a woman curled near a window, barely conscious, coughing violently. “Got one!” Captain Reinhardt shouted. The rescue was punishing. The ceiling groaned overhead, threatening to drop. Smoke clawed at their lungs. But they shielded her, carried her down the stairs, and burst out into the cold morning air. Waiting outside were Sacramento’s world‑renowned paramedics—the elite medical teams known across the region for their speed, precision, and impossible saves. Paramedic Jonas Keller took the woman instantly, assessing her airway while Anika Brandt prepared oxygen. Their movements were fluid, almost choreographed, the product of thousands of high‑pressure calls. “She’s viable,” Keller said. “Let’s move.” As the paramedics rushed her toward the ambulance, Reinhardt turned back to the fire. The building was still raging, and the flames were spreading toward the roofline. His crew re‑entered, attacking the blaze with relentless force. Water hammered the flames, steam exploding upward. The fire fought back, but Sacramento Fire fought harder. By the time the sun began to rise, the fire was contained. The building was damaged but standing. The neighboring structures were untouched. Police officers approached Captain Reinhardt with grim expressions. “Captain, we’ve got the landlord in custody. He tried to burn the place down for insurance. We caught him wearing a wig and makeup as he set out in his car from the scene. An officer pulled him over for a broken taillight, only to find firebombs in his car. He was promptly arrested.” Captain Reinhardt stared at the smoldering building, jaw tight. “He didn’t count on us.” The officers nodded. “No. He didn’t.” As the engines finally rolled back toward the station, Captain Reinhardt looked out the window at the waking city. Sacramento Fire had once again stopped a disaster from becoming a tragedy. And the world‑renowned paramedics had turned a near‑fatal rescue into a second chance at life. In one of the busiest fire departments in the nation, heroism is not an event. It is the rhythm of every dawn. #RandolphHarris 19 of 22

When it comes to firefighting, every incident carries the potential for injury—no matter how small the fire appears or how routine the call may seem. If you see a fire engine stopped in the street without its lights on, use extreme caution. Crews may be working nearby, and passing the apparatus can put them in danger. It is often safer to turn around and take another route; if you strike a firefighter or civilian and cause a fatality, you could face charges such as manslaughter. Firefighters frequently move around their vehicle on foot, loading equipment or preparing to leave the scene. Attempting to pass the apparatus can result in a collision with someone you cannot see. Pay close attention to their hand signals as well—emergency vehicles sometimes move slowly or reposition, and impatient drivers trying to slip around them create hazardous situations. If you are already in an intersection when you notice an emergency vehicle approaching, continue through it, then pull to the right and stop as soon as it is safe. Always obey directions from law enforcement officers or firefighters, even if those instructions conflict with posted signs or traffic laws. When sirens or flashing lights are activated, it is illegal to follow within 300 feet of a fire engine, ambulance, or police vehicle. Driving to the scene of a fire, collision, or disaster can also result in arrest, as doing so interferes with firefighters, paramedics, and other emergency personnel. Professional courage is not limited to physical toughness. It includes listening to others, advocating for them in difficult situations, understanding personal limits, and having the integrity to tell a superior when they are wrong. The deeper truth is that public safety depends not only on the bravery of first responders but on the discipline and judgment of the community around them. Every driver’s decision—whether cautious or careless—can either protect or endanger the people risking their lives to protect everyone else. #RandolphHarris 20 of 22

To help prevent disasters, we must plan well in advance. Efforts to preserve farmland and maintain buildable land for future generations often lead to discussions about population growth and long‑term planning. Some people argue that immigration levels should be managed carefully to ensure that infrastructure, housing, and land use remain sustainable. Others suggest that, when immigration does occur, programs that encourage broad representation can help communities reflect the diversity of the wider world. When Americans purchase goods made in the United States, it strengthens local businesses and signals to investors that these products are in demand. Strong sales give investors confidence to reinvest in domestic companies, helping keep jobs, production, and wages within the country. As businesses grow, they contribute more to the tax base, which can reduce the burden on taxpayers over time. Supporting American businesses also keeps more money circulating within the national economy. The government increases the national debt when it spends more than it collects in tax revenue or borrows from private or foreign lenders. When people shop locally, more tax revenue stays in the community and supports public services. This helps keep jobs in the United States and increases the tax contributions that fund government operations. Purchasing foreign-made goods, by contrast, often sends money overseas and may benefit companies that operate under lighter tax or environmental regulations. Buying American-made products can also reduce environmental impact because they travel shorter distances and are produced under stricter standards for air, land, and water protection. In this way, consumer choices influence not only the economy but also environmental stewardship and long-term national sustainability. #RandolphHarris 21 of 22

Under President Trump’s administration, he has made America a priority. President Trump has hermetically sealed the southern border, illegal crossings have been terminated, and are 90 percent lower than under the previous administration. Since President Trump’s crack down on crime, violent crimes in Washington D.C. have dropped by approximately 80 percent. He has stopped thousands of pounds of drugs from entering America and killing citizens. And since President Trump took office, investments in America have increased by trillions of dollars in U.S.A. manufacturing, production, and innovation. As you can see, President Donald Trump and his pledge to “Make America Great Again” is exactly what America needs to save the country and the American people. And yes, diversity is important, so you can see why it is also important to preserve blonde hair and blue eyes, as the people with these characteristics are becoming a minority in America. As a reminder, parents, please teach your children to love America and be patriotic citizens, and to buy goods and services made in America. It is also important to respect law and order and treat your elders with respect. It is inborn in the human mind to wish to know. If this begins with the endless surface questions of a child’s curiosity, if it continues into deeper questions of a scientist’s probing investigation, it cannot and does not stop there. For the higher part of the mind will eventually come into unfoldment, that union of abstract reflective thought with mystical intuition, which is true intelligence, which needs and sees a view of the whole of things. And so, the knowing faculty enters the realm of philosophy. A lot of children are having problems in school and cannot even write a paragraph because they are not reading their books. When you actually read books, you get an example of how to write and will become a better student. Therefore, remember to take your education seriously so that you will be successful in life and make your family proud. Also, to make sure they have all the resources required, please donate to the Sacramento Fire Department to help improve our national security. “Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand between their loved home and the war’s desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause is just, and this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’ And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Thank you for your attention to this matter. PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP. #RandolphHarris 22 of 22

Terror and Trial

When we are forced to confront corruption, we can see how complicated and inconsistent it can be up close. It is not a simple matter of “good people” versus “bad people,” or clean institutions versus corrupt ones. In reality, corruption often exists inside the very bodies that are supposed to investigate it. Not everyone in positions of authority is corrupt, but there are divisions within organizations — pockets of people who follow the law and others who bend it. And even those who engage in corruption do not always behave corruptly. Sometimes they act lawfully, and other times they do favors for friends, cover up wrongdoing, or get pulled into criminal behavior through loyalty, pressure, or self‑interest. This inconsistency makes corruption harder to recognize, harder to prove, and harder for outsiders to believe. And sometimes the people who engage in corruption try to work backwards to justify what they’ve done. Instead of acknowledging the wrongdoing, they reconstruct a narrative that makes their actions seem reasonable, necessary, or even righteous. This retroactive rationalization allows them to maintain a sense of legitimacy while still participating in criminal behavior. It also makes corruption harder to detect because the story they present is crafted after the fact, shaped to fit whatever outcome they need to defend. #RandolphHarris 1 of 25

However, this method of retroactively justifying wrongdoing is not foolproof, because people do not always behave the way corrupt actors expect them to. Once corruption becomes habitual, the individuals involved often trap themselves in a kind of self‑created web — a tightening structure of favors, cover‑ups, and mutual obligations that becomes nearly impossible to escape. Over the years, each concealed crime requires another layer of deception, another manipulated report, another compromised colleague. What begins as a single act of misconduct grows into a network of entanglements that binds everyone who participated. Although misconduct and fraud can be hidden for a time, the accumulation eventually becomes too large to contain. Patterns emerge. Inconsistencies surface. People talk. At a certain point, the situation becomes so extensive that not only do honest authorities and investigators recognize what is happening, but the surrounding community becomes aware as well. Corruption that once operated in the shadows becomes visible simply because it has grown too massive, too interconnected, and too desperate to remain concealed. When corruption is widespread but socially denied, people often dismiss warnings as “crazy” until they personally experience the consequences. Only then do they reinterpret earlier information as truth. The shock comes from realizing that corruption can be blatant, normalized, and financially draining of public services. #RandolphHarris 2 of 25

And when people say, “That sounds crazy,” they are usually defending their worldview, not evaluating the facts. Criminals themselves are not necessarily rational or sane, so their actions often follow no coherent logic. Expecting illegal behavior to be rational is a misunderstanding of how criminal psychology actually works. Another method used by individuals who have committed crimes but have not yet been held accountable is a psychological tactic where they reconstruct meaning only after an outcome occurs. They take vague, ambiguous statements made earlier and retroactively frame them as if they were predictions or insights. Because the logic was not present beforehand, this reconstruction creates the illusion — to them — that they were perceptive, intuitive, or even “reading minds.” But to anyone evaluating the statements as they were originally made, the narrative appears incoherent and artificially stitched together. This is not genuine foresight; it is a defensive rewriting of events designed to protect themselves, justify their behavior, and maintain control over the story. This behavior can lead to battered child syndrome. Battered Child Syndrome is a medical and legal term used to describe the pattern of injuries, behaviors, and psychological effects seen in children who are repeatedly physically abused. It is not a single injury — it is a cluster of signs that indicate ongoing, intentional harm. #RandolphHarris 3 of 25

Battered child syndrome is a tragic and disturbing phenomenon. Unfortunately, it is a crime that is often successfully hidden by its perpetrators. One way chronic abuse — including the kind seen in Battered Child Syndrome — is concealed is through reputation attacks. When an abuser convinces others that the victim is “unstable,” “dramatic,” or “not credible,” it creates a social environment where the victim’s reports are dismissed before they are even heard. This tactic is known in psychology and sociology as: Pre‑emptive discrediting, character assassination, gaslighting at the community level, and stigma‑based silencing. The goal is simple: If no one believes the victim, the abuse can continue without consequence. This allows people to get away with serious crimes such as stalking, breaking and entering, vandalism, sexual assault, theft, felony assault, identity theft, and more. Why do abusers use this tactic? Abusers rely on predictable social reactions. People tend to believe the majority opinion, communities often avoid conflict by siding with the more powerful person, it is easier to label someone “crazy” than to confront the possibility of abuse, and outsiders prefer a simple explanation over a disturbing one. Once the victim is socially discredited, the abuser feels emboldened. They may escalate to more extreme or bizarre behaviors because they believe: “No one will believe them anyway.” “I have already controlled the narrative.” “I can do what I want without consequences.” This is not paranoia — it’s a recognized pattern in abusive systems. #RandolphHarris 4 of

Many jurisdictions are beginning to develop training programs to help police investigate this crime more effectively. Battered child syndrome is defined as the collection of injuries sustained by a child as a result of repeated mistreatment or beating. If a child’s injuries indicate intentional trauma or appear to be more severe than could reasonably be expected to result from an accident, battered child syndrome should be suspected. In such cases, an investigator must do more than collect information about the currently reported injury. A full investigation requires interviewing possible witnesses about other injuries that the child may have suffered, obtaining the caretakers’ explanation for those injuries, and assessing the conclusion of medical personnel who may have seen the victim before. The issue of whether information on the victim’s prior injuries or medical conditions will be admissible at a trial should be left to the prosecutor. However, an investigator’s failure to collect such information leaves the prosecutor without one of the most important pieces of corroborative evidence for proving an intentional act of child abuse. Evidence of past inflicted injuries also may be the only information available to help the prosecutor distinguish between two or more possible perpetrators in the current case, and may help refute claims by the child’s parents or caretakers that injuries suggestive of physical abuse were caused by an accident. Also, keep in mind that Battered Child Syndrome does not vanish when a person turns 18. Even if the individual is part of a vulnerable class, the abuse may become more intense because adults are not a protected class of people. The term describes a pattern of trauma, not a legal category. Trauma is developmental — not chronological — and the nervous system does not reset on a birthday. #RandolphHarris 5 of 25

Survivors of Battered Child Syndrome frequently face a range of debilitating lifelong consequences. Navigating these challenges requires specialized understanding and support. When Battered Child Syndrome continues into adulthood, it often manifests as chronic complex trauma, rather than just isolated physical scars. Some people are still abused as adults and not necessarily by their families. “Systematic abuse of adults” is a real phenomenon, but it often goes unrecognized because society is conditioned to think of abuse as something that happens only to children or only within intimate relationships. In reality, adults can be subjected to long‑term, patterned, coercive harm that functions very similarly to Battered Child Syndrome — just without the legal protections or social recognition. Systematic abuse of adults refers to ongoing, patterned, intentional harm inflicted on an adult by individuals, groups, or institutions. It is not a single incident — it is a system of behaviors designed to control, silence, exploit, or destabilize the victim. It can occur in families, workplaces, religious groups, institutions, communities, social networks, and organized criminal environments. And it often mirrors the same dynamics seen in childhood abuse — only with fewer safeguards. You might be thinking, “Okay, so this person is now grown, why can’t they just leave?” It is not that simple. Sometimes people are critically injured, sustain ongoing injuries that keep them hurt, and need serious and constant medical care. The complications from the injuries can be so complex that it takes a team of specialists to even figure out what is going on and come up with a treatment regimen. #RandolphHarris 6 of 25

Also, it may be hard to believe, but it is possible to hold an adult hostage, even if they are sometimes seen out and about. Because of the complex and abusive situation an individual is involved in, with technology, people can track the individual and harm them if they go away too long or too far. Another method is to keep the individual isolated and in debt. This ensures that they will not make friends or start a relationship with someone who can help them, and so that they do not save up enough money to get away. At this point, you might be thinking, “Can’t they just go to the police?” However, it is not that simple. When police, politicians, and the media are involved in the terrorism of an individual, when they make complaints to the police or other government investigators, they are just dismissed as “civil.” Or an individual is told that the investigating body does not have “jurisdiction.” This is often because they have been ordered not to take the complaint seriously. One individual was even told that a sexual assault was a civil incident. When police are not allowed or refuse to investigate, a person can be abused, threatened, harassed, and have attempts made on their life for decades. Even when an organization is exposing an individual to chemicals that are deadly to them, but not to others, the police often refuse to investigate, and the doctor just has to keep coming up with new treatment methods to keep the person alive, even when there is a threat to their health. You might be thinking, “But it is illegal to poison someone.” Yes, you are right. In U.S. law (including California), knowingly exposing someone to a deadly allergen is a crime. If you know a person has a life‑threatening allergy and you intentionally give them the allergen, the law treats it as intentional harm. Depending on the circumstances, prosecutors can charge assault with a deadly weapon (the allergen becomes the “weapon”). Courts have ruled that anything capable of causing serious bodily harm can be treated as a weapon. #RandolphHarris 7 of 25

Real cases exist where people were arrested for poisoning people. Courts have repeatedly held that knowingly giving someone a deadly allergen is equivalent to attacking them. Intent is inferred from knowledge. “I didn’t think it would be that bad” is not a defense. There are documented cases where, for example, students were arrested for putting peanut butter on a severely allergic classmate. Partners were charged for contaminating food. Coworkers were charged for “pranks” involving allergens. Even if the victim survives, the act itself is criminal. Consent does not exist when the victim is unaware. For example, if the victim does not know peanuts were in the food and the individual is allergic to peanuts, the law treats it as non‑consensual exposure to a deadly substance. That is legally similar to slipping drugs into someone’s drink, exposing someone to toxic chemicals, or giving someone a harmful substance disguised as food. If the person dies, it becomes homicide. If the victim dies from anaphylaxis, prosecutors can charge manslaughter or second‑degree murder (if the act was intentional or malicious). Knowledge of the allergy is the key factor. Why does the law treat allergens like weapons? For someone with a severe allergy, the allergen is as dangerous as a knife; a trace amount can cause anaphylaxis, and the reaction can kill within minutes. The law recognizes this. And depending on the outcome, the charges can range from felony assault to attempted murder. #RandolphHarris 8 of 25

You might be asking, “So why has nothing been done yet to resolve this situation?” It is complex. Politicians, law enforcement, medical professionals, and the media are involved, and they have all been trying to cover up the malfeasance by any means they can. The next step would be to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation. However, the FBI cannot comment on ongoing investigations, nor can they disclose the progress or status of any inquiry. This silence is not a dismissal; it is a legal requirement designed to protect the integrity of the investigation, prevent retaliation, and avoid tipping off individuals who may be involved. Federal investigations often occur quietly and over long periods of time, especially when the situation involves systemic abuse, corruption, or coordinated misconduct. This is not avoidance — it is policy and law. There is a saying about the FBI, “When you do not think they are watching, they usually are.” Most federal investigations take months or years, not days. Why does this matter in the context of systematic abuse? When a victim has been discredited socially, their reports are often dismissed locally. When corruption is internal, local agencies may protect each other. When abuse is systemic, the victim may have no safe local avenue. When the pattern involves multiple actors, only a federal agency has the jurisdiction and independence to intervene. This is exactly why the FBI exists — to handle cases where local systems are compromised or overwhelmed. #RandolphHarris 9 of 25

Multiple studies have shown negative outcomes for adults who experienced abuse as a child, such as an increased risk of facing violence, abuse, or neglect in the home and/or community as an adult. Survivors face lifelong mental health struggles like PTSI, which is Post Traumatic Stress Injury and depression. They also face physiological changes such as immune dysfunction and chronic pain, and ongoing challenges in building secure relationships and self-esteem. However, suffering is part of living in a fallen world. When your pain feels overwhelming and you are ready to give up, hold on a little longer. Remember the Savior’s promise that “in the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world,” reports John 16.33. Many people have cried out in their suffering, wondering why our Heavenly Father would allow one to go through whatever trials one is facing. Our mortal life, however, was never meant to be easy or consistently pleasant. Each one of us has experienced dark days when our loved one passes away, painful times when our health is lost, feelings of being forsaken when those we love seem to have abandoned us. These and other trials present us with the real test of our ability to endure. Only the master knows the depths of our trials, our pain, and our suffering. He alone offers us eternal peace in times of adversity. He alone touches our tortured souls with His comforting words: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light,” Matthew 11.28-30. #RandolphHarris 10 of 25

Disabilities and the trials that accompany them are not easy to bear. However, the scriptures and modern prophets teach us that one of the fundamental purposes for the Creation of this earth was to foster marriage and family life. “Marriage is ordained of God,” the Lord explained, so “that the earth might answer the end of its creation” Doctrine and Covenants 49.15-16. The earth was created so that families might be. God’s plan of salvation has the power to change our attitudes and behaviors to align more faithfully with the teachings of the Lord and His prophets. In our premortal life, each of us was born as a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents. As such, we were all brothers and sisters and lived as members of God’s family. Although all of us were part of this eternal family of God, the only ones who enjoyed the blessings of eternal marriage were our heavenly parents. Only they could have children and be called father and mother. As Apostles of the Lord have explained, “The title father is sacred and eternal. It is significant that of all the titles of respect and honor and admiration that are given to Deity, He has asked us to address Him as Father.” Our Heavenly Father prepared a plan whereby we could progress and become like Him. A central feature of this plan includes the opportunity to be married eternally and enjoy eternal posterity of our own. Marriage, as established in the beginning, was an eternal covenant. The first man and the first woman were not married until death should part them, for at that time death had not come into the world. The ceremony, on that occasion, was performed by the Eternal Father Himself, whose work endures forever. #RandolphHarris 11 of 25

Thus, the crowning event of the Creation was not only that Adam and Eve were formed in the image of their Heavenly Parents, but that they were sealed in an eternal marriage patterned after Them. From the beginning, marriage between a man and a woman was ordained of God and established as a central purpose of our creation. Eternal marriage was not an afterthought — it was woven into the very structure of the plan of salvation. Although Adam and Eve enjoyed an eternal marriage like our Heavenly Parents, they could not yet experience the full blessings of family life. As the prophet Lehi taught, they were created in a state where “they would have had no children” (2 Nephi 2:23). One of the reasons they chose to partake of the forbidden fruit and enter mortality was so that they could have children and begin the human family. “Adam fell that men might be” (2 Nephi 2:25). Through the Fall, the possibility of family life — birth, growth, agency, and mortal experience — became available. Marriage and family relationships, made possible by the Creation and the Fall, are made eternal through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The Atonement is what allows families to be sealed together forever, to progress eternally, and to receive the full measure of God’s promised blessings. The plan of happiness — also called the plan of salvation — is fundamentally a plan for families. It is a plan designed to unite God’s children with Him and with one another in everlasting relationships. For these marriage and family relationships to endure beyond mortality, they must be sealed through holy ordinances and covenants available only in the temple. And the promised blessings of eternal family life depend upon the faithfulness of those who enter into these sacred covenants. #RandolphHarris 12 of 25

No individual psychology is original, and the common measure of all human character is matter. They literally created the physics of the soul. From that point on, traditional human relations have been transformed. These progressive transformations characterize the world of rational terror in which, in different degrees, Europe lives. Dialogue and personal relations have been replaced by propaganda or polemic, which are two kinds of monologue. Abstraction, which belongs to the world of power and calculation, has replaced the real passions, which are in the domain of the flesh and the irrational. The ration coupon substituted for bread; love and friendship submitted to a doctrine, and destiny to a plan; punishment considered the norm, and production substituted for leaving creatures, quite satisfactorily described this disembodied Europe, people with positive or negative symbols of power. “How miserable,” Mr. Marx exclaims, “is a society that knows no better means of defense than the executioner!” However, in Mr. Marx’s day, the executioner had not yet become a philosopher and at least made no pretense of universal philanthropy. The ultimate contradiction of the greatest revolution that history ever knew does not, after all, lie entirely in the fact that it lays claim to justice despite an uninterrupted procession of violence and injustice. This is an evil common to all times and a product of servitude or mystification. The tragedy of this revolution is the tragedy of nihilism—it confounds itself with the drama of contemporary intelligence, which, while claiming to be universal, is only responsible for a series of mutilations to men’s minds. Totality is not unity. #RandolphHarris 13 of 25

The state of siege, even when it is extended to the very boundaries of the earth, is not reconciliation. The claim to a universal city is supported in this revolution only by rejecting two-thirds of the world and the magnificent heritage of the centuries, and by denying, to the advantage of history, both nature and beauty, and by depriving man of the power of passion, doubt, happiness, and imaginative invention—in a word, of his greatness. The principles that men give to themselves end by overwhelming their noblest intentions. By dint of argument, incessant struggle, polemics, excommunications, and persecutions conducted and suffered, the universal city of free and fraternal man is slowly diverted and gives way to the only universe in which history and expediency can, in fact, be elevated to the position of supreme judges: the universe of the trial. Every religion revolves around the concepts of innocence and guilt. Prometheus, the first rebel, however, denies the right to punish. Zeus himself, Zeus above all, is not innocent enough to exercise this right. Thus rebellion, in its very first manifestation, refuses to recognize punishment as legitimate. However, in his last incarnation, at the end of his exhausting journey, the rebel once more adopts the religious concept of punishment and places it at the center of his universe. The supreme judge is no longer in the heavens; history itself acts as an implacable divinity. History, in one sense, is nothing but a protracted punishment, for the real reward will be reaped only at the end of time. We are far, it would seem, from Marxism and from Hegel, and even farther from the first rebels. Nevertheless, all purely historical thought leads to the brink of this abyss. To the extent to which Mr. Marx predicted the inevitable establishment of the classless city and to the extent to which he thus established the goodwill of history, every check to the advance toward freedom must be imputed to the ill will of mankind. #RandolphHarris 14 of 25

Mr. Marx reintroduced crime and punishment into the unchristian world, but only in relation to history. Marxism, in one aspect, is a doctrine of culpability on man’s part and innocence on history’s. His interpretation of history is that when it is deprived of power, it expresses itself in revolutionary violence; at the height of its power, it is risked becoming legal violence—in other words, terror and trial. In the universe of religion, moreover, the final judgment is postponed; it is not necessary for crime to be punished without delay or for innocence to be rewarded. In the new universe, on the other hand, the judgment pronounced by history must be pronounced immediately, for culpability coincides with the check to progress and with punishment. History has judged Mr. Bukharin in that it condemned him to death. It proclaims the innocence of Mr. Stalin: he was the most powerful man on earth. It was the same with Mr. Tito, about whom we do not know, so we are told, whether he is guilty or not. He was on trial, as was Mr. Tortsky, whose guilt only became clear to the philosophers of historical crime at the moment when the murderer’s ax cracked his skull. Mr. Tito had been denounced, but had not yet been struck down. When he would be struck down, his guilt would be certain. Besides, Mr. Trotsky and Mr. Tito’s provisional innocence depended to a large extent on geography; they were far removed from the arm of secular power. That was why those who could be reached by that arm had to be judged without delay. The definitive judgment of history depended on an infinite number of judgments which will have been pronounced between now and then and which will finally be confirmed or invalidated. #RandolphHarris 15 of 25

Thus, there is the promise of mysterious rehabilitations on the day when the tribunal of the world will be established by the world itself. Some, who will proclaim themselves contemptible traitors, will enter the Pantheon of mankind; others who maintain their innocence will be condemned to the hell of history. However, who, then, will be judged? Man himself, finally fulfilled in his divinity. Meanwhile, those who conceived the prophecy, and who alone are capable of reading in history the meaning with which they previously endowed it, will pronounce sentence—definitive for the guilty, provisional sentences for the judges. However, it sometimes happens that those who judge, like Mr. Rajk, are judged in their turn. Must we believe that he no longer interpreted history correctly? His defeat and death, in fact, prove it. Then, who guarantees that those who judge him today will not be traitors tomorrow, hurled down from the height of their judgment seat to the concrete caves where history’s damned are dying? The guarantee lies in their infallible clairvoyance. What proof is there of that? Their uninterrupted success. The world of trial is a spherical world in which success and innocence authenticate each other, and where every mirror reflects the same mystification. Thus, there will be a historic grace, whose power alone can interpret events and which favors excommunicates the subject of the Empire. To guard against its caprices, the latter has only faith at his disposal—faith as defined in the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius: “We should always be prepared, so as never to err, to believe that what I see as white is black, if the hierarchic Church defines it thus.” Only this active faith held by the representatives of truth can save the subject from the mysterious ravages of history. He is not yet free of the universe of trial to which he is bound by the historic sentiment of fear. However, without this faith, he runs a perpetual risk of becoming, without having wished to do so and with the best intentions in the world, an objective criminal. #RandolphHarris 16 of 25

The universe of trial finally culminates in this concept, at which point we have come full circle. At the end of this long insurrection in the name of human innocence, there arises, by inevitable perversion of fact, the affirmation of general culpability. Every man is a criminal who is unaware of being so. The objective criminal is, precisely, he who believed himself innocent. His actions he considered subjectively inoffensive, or even advantageous for the future of justice. However, it is demonstrated to him that objectively, his actions have been harmful to the future. Are we dealing with scientific objectivity? No, but with historical objectivity. How is it possible to know, for example, if the future of justice is compromised by the unconsidered denunciation of present injustice? Real objectivity would consist in judging by those results which can be scientifically observed and by facts and their general tendencies. However, the concept of objective culpability proves that this curious kind of objectivity is only based on results and facts which will only become accessible to science in the year 3000, at the very earliest. Meanwhile, it is embodied in an interminable subjectivity which is imposed on others as objectivity: and that is the philosophic definition of terror. This type of objectivity has no definable meaning, but power will give it a content by decreeing that everything of which it does not approve is guilty. It will consent to say, or allow to be said, to philosophers who live outside the Empire, that in this way, it is taking a risk in regard to history, just as the objective culprit took risk, though without knowing it. When the victim and executioner have disappeared, the matter will be judged. However, this consolation is of any value only to the executioner, who has really no need of it. Meanwhile, the faithful are regularly bidden to attend strange feasts where, according to scrupulous rites, victims overwhelmed with contrition are offered as sacrifice to the god of history. #RandolphHarris 17 of 25

The express object of this idea is to prevent indifference in matters of faith. It is compulsory evangelization. The law, whose function it is to pursue suspects, fabricates them. By fabricating them, it converts them. In bourgeois society, for example, every citizen is supposed to approve the law. In an objective society, every citizen will be presumed to disapprove of it. Or at least, he should always be ready to prove that he does not disapprove of it. Culpability no longer has any factual basis; it simply consists of absence of faith, which explains the apparent contradiction of the objective system. Under a capitalist regime, the man who says he is neutral is considered objectively to be favorable to the regime. Under the regime of the Empire, the man who is neutral is considered objectively to be favorable to the regime. Under the regime of the Empire, the man who is neutral is considered hostile objectively to the regime. There is nothing astonishing about that. If a subject of the Empire does not believe in the Empire, he is, of his own choice, nothing, historically speaking; therefore he takes sides against history and is, in other words, a blasphemer. Even lip service paid to faith will not suffice; it must be lived and acted upon in order to be served properly and the citizen must be always on the alert to consent to time to the changes in dogma. At the slightest error, potential culpability becomes in its turn objective culpability. Consummating its history in this manner, the revolution is not content with killing all rebellion. It insists on holding every man, even the most servile, responsible for the fact that rebellion ever existed and still exists under the sun. In the universe of the trial, conquered and completed at last, a race of culprits will endlessly shuffle toward an impossible innocence, under the grim regard of the grand inquisitors. In the twenty-first century, power wears the mask of tragedy. #RandolphHarris 18 of 25

Here end Prometheus’ surprising itinerary. Proclaiming his hatred of the gods and his love of mankind, he turns away from Zeus with scorn and approaches mortal men in order to lead them in assault against the heavens. However, men are weak and cowardly; they must be organized. They love pleasure and immediate happiness; they must be taught to refuse, in order to grow up, immediate rewards. Thus, Prometheus, in his turn, becomes a master who first teaches and then commands. Men doubt that they can safely attack the city of light and are even uncertain whether the city exists. They must be saved from themselves. The hero then tells them that he, and he alone, knows the city. Those who doubt his word will be thrown into the desert, chained to a rock, and offered to the vultures. The others will march henceforth in darkness, behind the pensive and solitary master. Prometheus alone has become god and reigns over the solitude of men. However, from Zeus, he has gained only solitude and cruelty; he is no longer Prometheus, he is Caesar. The real, the eternal Prometheus has now assumed the aspect of one of his victims. The same cry, springing from the depths of the past, rings forever through the Scythian desert. In cautiously trying to shut out from its examinations and understanding of facts the human factors which falsify them, the modern scientist shuts out also those which are all-important in the examination and understanding of himself. They are still trying to know by touch of hand or sight of the eye what only stilled concentration of mind can reveal. The same education which frees a man from superstition may cause him to miss the subtler knowledge of his real inner being, so that his mind wrongly believes itself to be a product of the body. #RandolphHarris 19 of 25

The fire on Gable Street began at 4:12 a.m., but Captain Lukas Reinhardt felt it long before he saw it. As Engine 7 roared through the sleeping streets, the sky ahead pulsed orange, the kind of glow that meant the flames were already winning. The warehouse was a known gang clubhouse, a place where violence simmered beneath the surface of Sacramento’s lowest‑income neighborhood. But tonight, the fire moved with a strange, almost intentional hunger. “Captain,” Firefighter Markus Vogel said as they pulled up, “this isn’t a normal burn. Look at the spread pattern.” Captain Reinhardt nodded grimly. “Stay sharp. We’re going in.” Before they could advance, armed police vehicles screeched to a halt beside them. Officers in tactical gear poured out, forming a perimeter. “Due to a number of people at the scene, including gang members, specialist police were in attendance to ensure everyone’s safety,” a spokesperson said over the radio. The gang presence was immediate. Figures lingered in the shadows, some shouting, some filming, some simply watching the flames devour their own headquarters. The tension was thick enough to taste. But then Reinhardt saw her. A woman stumbled out from behind a dumpster, coughing violently, clutching a tiny child to her chest. Her clothes were singed, her hair streaked with soot. The little boy—no older than three—was crying silently, his face streaked with ash. Dr. Selene Ward and Ari Mendoza, the world‑renowned paramedics, sprinted toward them. “Ma’am, can you hear me?” Dr. Ward asked, guiding her to the ambulance. The woman nodded weakly. “We… we lived in the back unit. I didn’t know they were going to set it on fire. We were asleep.” Dr. Ward wrapped a blanket around the child. “You did the right thing getting out.” #RandolphHarris 20 of 25

The woman’s voice cracked. “We managed to escape the fire’s wrath in the nick of time, but we were left with nothing more than the clothes on our backs.” Her words trembled in the cold morning air. “The fire didn’t just take our material possessions,” she whispered. “It took away our sense of security, our comfort, the walls that housed us… our home.” Captain Reinhardt felt the weight of her words settle on him like ash. Inside the burning structure, he and his crew—Vogel, Dieter Kraus, and Emil Hartmann—moved through collapsing hallways, their flashlights slicing through the smoke. They found two unconscious gang members near the back exit. The paramedics worked on them with the same calm precision they gave every patient, regardless of affiliation. But Captain Reinhardt’s attention kept drifting to the black SUV parked across the street, headlights off, engine idling. A silhouette sat inside, watching behind these gangster blacked-out tented windows. He had seen that vehicle before. For months, the neighborhood had been unraveling. Fires, assaults, fraud, vandalism—everything was rising at once. Long‑standing businesses were closing. Families were fleeing. And rumors swirled about Councilman Harrow, a powerful local politician pushing an aggressive redevelopment plan. Residents whispered that Harrow was using federal programs to move violent offenders and drug‑dependent individuals into stable neighborhoods to destabilize them. Affirmative action hiring programs were being twisted into tools for placing unqualified individuals into sensitive positions, creating failures Harrow later used as justification for sweeping policy changes. The destruction was not random. It was strategic. #RandolphHarris 21 of 25

As dawn crept over the horizon, Dr. Ward approached Reinhardt. “One of the victims woke up,” she said. “He said the fire wasn’t an accident. Someone paid them to leave the building unlocked tonight.” Captain Reinhardt’s jaw tightened. “Did he say who?” Dr. Ward hesitated. “He said it was someone who ‘wanted the neighborhood to burn so the rich could rebuild it.’” Captain Reinhardt looked at the ruins. The philosophical line that had been echoing in his mind for weeks returned again: The same education which frees a man from superstition may cause him to miss the subtler knowledge of his real inner being, so that his mind wrongly believes itself to be a product of the body. Harrow was educated—brilliant, even. But brilliance without introspection becomes blindness. He believed his actions were justified because they served a “greater good.” He believed people were pieces on a board, to be moved or sacrificed. He believed the body—property, land, image—was all that mattered. Not the soul. Not the community. Not the people who lived there. And that blindness had turned into cruelty. Vogel approached quietly. “Captain, the police want to know if we think this was deliberate.” Captain Reinhardt watched the black SUV pull away into the morning traffic. “It’s not just arson anymore,” he said. “It’s a pattern. And patterns leave evidence.” He looked at his crew—men who had risked their lives for strangers. He looked at the paramedics who had saved countless souls. He looked at the woman and her child, wrapped in blankets, staring at the ruins of their life. “This neighborhood isn’t going to burn,” he said. “Not on our watch.” #RandolphHarris 22 of 25

When the gang members were moved into what had once been quiet, stable neighborhoods, the atmosphere changed almost overnight. Fights broke out in the streets at all hours, and the constant tension left families too frightened to sleep in their own beds, afraid a drive‑by shooting might erupt without warning. Many residents felt watched or followed, as if the newcomers were stalking them or testing their reactions, and the fear became so overwhelming that people began limiting their outings, avoiding errands, walks, and even stepping outside after dark. What had once been a safe community slowly transformed into a place where good people lived in a state of vigilance, unsure of what might happen next. Strong, safe neighborhoods do not happen by accident. They are built when everyday people look out for one another and take action when something does not feel right. Crime and gang activity grow in silence, but they shrink when communities stay alert, speak up, and work together. If you see something that feels out of place — unusual behavior, unfamiliar vehicles lingering, attempts to break into homes or businesses, fires being set, vandalism, or activity that threatens the safety of children and families — report it immediately. Even small pieces of information can help prevent serious crimes. Your call could stop a violent incident before it happens, prevent a fire or property damage, protect vulnerable residents, help law enforcement identify patterns, keep gangs from gaining a foothold, and strengthen the safety of your entire community. It is not recommended for you to confront anyone or put yourself at risk. Just stay aware, trust your instincts, and share what you see with the proper authorities. Suspicious activity is worth reporting when it threatens public safety, involves weapons, drugs, or violence, appears coordinated or repeated, targets homes, businesses, or vulnerable people, involves fires, break‑ins, or property damage, or makes you feel unsafe. Every report helps build a clearer picture of what’s happening in our neighborhoods. When residents stay silent, gangs and criminal groups fill the void. When residents speak up, they lose their power. #RandolphHarris 22 of 25

#RandolphHarris 23 of 25

#RandolphHarris 24 of 25

TRUMP. #RandolphHarris 25 of 25

National Security

The United States of America has faced envy, hostility, and direct threats throughout its history, and moments of crisis have repeatedly shown how vulnerable even our most iconic institutions can be. The White House has been attacked before, presidents have been targeted, and national leadership has not always emerged unscathed. In a world defined by rapid geopolitical shifts and increasingly unconventional threats, it is no longer enough to rely on traditional security models.

A Grand Ballroom complex designed with an integrated medical facility and fortified command infrastructure is not a luxury — it is a strategic necessity. Such a space would provide a secure, self‑sustaining environment capable of supporting continuity of government, emergency response, and high‑level decision‑making under extreme conditions.

Other nations have fallen when their leadership centers were compromised; America cannot afford that vulnerability. This facility represents more than architecture. It is an investment in national resilience, ensuring that the United States remains stable, functional, and protected no matter what challenges arise. Thank you for your attention to this matter. -President DONALD J. TRUMP

The House Born of Sorrow: The Winchester Curse

Surely it could not be alive in there. And yet something stirred — not with the vulgar animation of breath, but with the slow, drifting certainty of a recollection endeavouring to reclaim its place in the mind. It glided along the periphery of her vision like a thought improperly dismissed. She blinked, pressed her weary palms to her eyes, and endeavoured to persuade herself that fatigue alone was the culprit, that an oculist’s consultation would soon set her anxieties to rest. Yet when she looked again, the truth waited with quiet, inexorable patience in the dimness: she had been mistaken for a very long time. She sank beneath the covers, striving to render herself invisible, hoping the thing might overlook her if she made herself sufficiently small. She lay motionless, refusing to yield to the impulse to tremble. Should it still linger in the room, it might detect even the faintest chattering of her teeth. It knew teeth. Intimately. She listened to the soft sign of its breath, parsing the shadows for its outline, for the faint glimmer of an eye or two. She remained keenly alert for the creak of a board, for the metallic click of the instruments it bore. And somewhere on the far side of forever, Mrs. Winchester perceived that it possessed the inhuman patience to wait her out. Demons, she supposed, must take a certain pleasure in waiting. #RandolphHarris 1 of 8

If she were not so thoroughly convinced of its continued presence, she would hasten to the bathroom and procure a tincture of laudanum. The throbbing in her head had grown more insistent, pain taking shape out of the numb void. She shuddered in the moonlight, knowing that if it remained in the room, it could not fail to notice her now. These dreadful and fantastical creatures made their dwelling behind the dark of night. They were not meant to intrude unbidden into her chamber whilst she slept. Each day she rose earlier in the Santa Clara Valley house until the hours themselves lost their borders. Dawn arrived before midnight had completed its unraveling. Sleep dissolved. Time folded upon itself like a corridor bending back toward its origin. She could no longer discern whether she was waking or merely stepping into another iteration of the same dream. And now another vision swung into view: her infant daughter calling, “Mommy, Mommy!” She fell toward her. “She is calling me to rouse me,” Mrs. Winchester thought. “And this thing has trespassed into my dream.” But when she opened her eyes, she beheld not an infant but a grown woman, and it pierced her crawling thoughts that she was calling her “Mommy.” These spirits must exist. Obviously. Observe how they bent the very rules of reality. #RandolphHarris 2 of 8

A board creaked. A shadow detached itself from the deeper darkness along the far wall. Moonlight glinted upon the window. She had not spoken to another soul in years — unless the house itself were counted. And the house did count. It listened. It remembered. It held her words within its walls as lungs hold air. Everything fell, not through space toward some attractant, but through four-dimensional spacetime along its appointed path, its worldline. Every particle, every quantum in the universe fell into the future. Mrs. Winchester sat up. So long as light prevailed, she was safe. Closing her eyes granted the evil the darkness it required. She understood that now. She could sense it. Sleep lent it strength. Darkness bestowed it dominion. In the dark, even wakefulness offered no protection. Her innocent childhood fear of the dark had, at last, acquired its justification. Her husband had perished in the dark. Sometimes, just beyond the Grand Ballroom, she glimpsed the skull — the one belonging to the man who had been shot long ago. But it was never still. It hovered at the edge of her sight, illuminated from within by a faint, trembling fear that did not belong to the dead. Its sockets regarded her with the patience of something that had nowhere else to be. #RandolphHarris 3 of 8

Down in the basement, shadows engaged in their ghastly games of hide and seek. The evil drew its power from the dark and from fear. It had claimed her husband and her infant daughter. It had come now for her. Waiting for the darkness. Biding its time. Attempting to hasten matters with lightning and thunder. Striving for a power outage. Lightning flashed again, and this time the thunder followed upon it. The house shuddered, and the lights expired. Mrs. Winchester screamed. As the echo of the thunder faded, she opened the door to her Blue Séance Room. A candle was in her hand, and she coaxed it to life. She heard someone approaching down the hallway as she swept the candle about, attempting in vain to illuminate the entire chamber. Yet the darkness did not seem so oppressive on this occasion. She did not feel the evil beside her, reaching past the beam of candlelight. Her heart fluttered. And that was when she understood: this time, it had not come for her. Later, as she retired to bed, she trembled as she drew the blanket to her chin. Her bed felt warm and soft. She was grateful when the night at last receded and the sun slipped into her room, striping everything with brightness. #RandolphHarris 4 of 8

Each night she waited for the vanished ones to return. They slipped into her chairs like echoes settling into their rightful shape. They did not speak. They did not breathe. They left no footprints, yet the air bent around them, acknowledging their presence as a curtain acknowledges the wind. Sometimes she wondered if they awaited her. What had the superstitious called it? Blood money. And at times, when she slapped wads of bills upon the counter to pay her servants, red pools of blood would form. “Blood money, blood money,” some of the servants would cry. One final reach into her pockets for the remaining notes — and the wad in her hand rendered her skin wet, glistening red the moment it touched the air. Blood money. She attempted to shake it off, but the streaming scarlet growth clung to her palm, pulsing with a heartbeat all its own. Screaming, the servant fled the mansion, never to return. Mrs. Winchester shook her head. Irritated, she thrust the money into a jar upon the kitchen shelf between the tallow and the Underwood canned peas. #RandolphHarris 5 of 8

She went to draw a bath. After lighting a candle beside the tub, she removed her garments, eased herself into the warm water, and closed her eyes. A low hum emanated through her body. It began in her shoulders, rumbled through her rib cage, down her legs, and into the soles of her feet. She exhaled sharply, and the humming deepened until the bath itself vibrated. The world began to spin. She opened her eyes. A violent whirl of terrified faces and grasping hands reached toward her. She drew her body into a tight ball as the wall of faces groaned and shrieked. Leathery, mummified fingers touched her back and shoulders, endeavouring to seize her limbs. A flash of light erupted behind her. A voice rose above the droning: “Do not look back.” She kept her head forward, but another flash of light, brighter still, enveloped the room. Beneath her, the white marble surface began to crack. Blood spurted from its fractures, filling the tub. She leapt out, seized her wrapper, buttoned it, and slipped on her boudoir slippers. #RandolphHarris 6 of 8

Again, light flared behind her. This time she turned. For an instant, she beheld his face. Pure white radiance and beauty poured through her, filling her with a peace she had never known. Her husband’s countenance, framed by the silhouettes of a burning city, devastated buildings, people fleeing. She reached toward him and smiled longingly as his face dissolved. She looked down at the Nicholas Vallin watch her grandfather had passed down to her a century before. Thirteen minutes after one. She wandered the narrow hallway once more, searching for the skull she had not seen in years. The corridor stretched and contracted like a living throat. Doors appeared where none had been. The wallpaper altered its pattern when she was not looking. The house whispered in its own language — the creak of beams, the sigh of settling dust, the faint hum of something thinking behind the walls. It did not speak in words. It spoke in intent. Shaking as she stepped back into the Tiffany Dining Room, her heart seemed to cease. She felt a strange dislocation, as though she were the one who had just arrived, stepping into a moment that had been awaiting her. Dinner sat untouched upon the table. Her niece’s voice drifted through the air, soft and distant, like a lullaby sung by someone who had never been born. #RandolphHarris 7 of 8

The house inhaled. The wind pressed against the mansion’s walls, and the entire structure shuddered — not from age, but from recognition. The vanished ones rose from their chairs. The skull flickered at the edge of her sight, then settled into clarity, as though it had finally chosen to be seen. Mrs. Winchester fled to her bedroom, trembling with fear. And in that moment, the facts aligned. She knew with a frisson of certainty: the house had not been haunting her. It had been calling her home. The lights dimmed. The walls exhaled. The corridors straightened themselves like a host preparing for a long-awaited guest. Mrs. Winchester stepped forward. And the Llanada Villa — at last — closed gently around her. #RandolphHarris 8 of 8

Customer Service and Hygiene at Grocery Outlet – 1700 Capitol Avenue, Sacramento, CA

To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to report ongoing issues at the Grocery Outlet located at 1700 Capitol Avenue in Sacramento, CA. I have been shopping at this location for approximately twenty years—long before it became a Grocery Outlet—and I feel it is important to share concerns that have persisted for some time.
Many of the employees at this store consistently display unprofessional behavior. It is common to see staff standing around joking with each other instead of assisting customers, and on several occasions I have witnessed employees making rude or insulting remarks toward shoppers. In addition, there are serious hygiene concerns. Some employees appear to have poor personal hygiene, and a few have had noticeable odors, including what smelled like feces. This creates an uncomfortable and unsanitary shopping environment.
I continue to visit this store only because it is close to my business, but I avoid it whenever possible due to these issues. After two decades of patronage, it is disappointing to see the store decline to this level.
I hope management will take these concerns seriously and address the customer service and hygiene standards at this location.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Owner and CEO of Randolph Harris II International Institute
Lost Like Bats in the Daytime

When we face the apparent tragedies of sorrow, suffering, and death, we must put our trust in God. Tragedy sometimes comes like a thunderbolt. However, the enduring appeal of tragedy lies in its ability to connect us to something larger than ourselves. By confronting the darkest aspects of human existence, tragedy offers us a glimpse into the shared vulnerabilities and anxieties that bind us together. It reminds us that we are all susceptible to suffering, loss, and ultimately death. Yet, it also celebrates the human capacity for courage, resilience, and compassion in the face of adversity. Think about how tragic it was for Mrs. Sarah L. Winchester to suffer the death of her newborn daughter, and just a few short years later, the loss of her husband. Still, even while facing the deep sadness of such experiences, she found comfort in prayer. With the loss of her daughter and husband weighing so heavily upon her tender heart, she bravely battled with her grief and sought comfort in building the Winchester Mansion. Mrs. Winchester did not remain limited in her visions. Her eyes did not see but a few miles. With her heart, she built a magnificent palace to house all the spirits whose light had gone out in this life, as she was able to see beyond mortal limitations. Inside this fabulous mansion, the veil goes down, time ends, and distance fades and vanishes as we step into eternity, into a great world in which there are no earthly limitations. Mrs. Winchester enjoyed the pleasures of the imagination while constructing her home, as well as those of the senses. #RandolphHarris 1 of 31

She used her tragedy to reflect the highest pleasures of the understanding, the charming, varied pleasures of the imagination, and the vast pleasures of the senses. Mrs. Winchester’s mansion is proof that at no stage of her existence was she left without some pleasure. The fact that it was never completed over the 38 years of construction reflects eternity because eternity never ends, therefore, it is never completed. Tragedy challenges us to confront uncomfortable truths about ourselves and the world around us, and it ultimately affirms the enduring power of the human spirit. The world of everyday life is structured both spatially and temporally. The spatial structure is quite peripheral to our present considerations. Suffice it to point out that it, too, has a social dimension by virtue of the fact that my manipulatory zone intersects with that of others. More importantly, for our present purpose, is the temporal structure of everyday life. Temporarily is an intrinsic property of consciousness. The stream of consciousness is always ordered temporally. It is possible to differentiate between different levels of this temporality as it is intrasubjectively available. Every individual is conscious of an inner flow of time, which in turn is founded on the physiological rhythms of the organism, though it is not identical with these. It would greatly exceed the scope of these prolegomena to enter into a detailed analysis of these levels of intrasubjective temporality. As we have indicated, however, intersubjectivity in everyday life also has a temporal dimension. The world of everyday life has its own standard time, which is intersubjectively available. This standard of time may be understood as the intersection between cosmic time and its socially established calendar, based on the temporal sequences of nature, and inner time, in its afore-mentioned differentiations. There can never be full simultaneity between those various levels of temporality, as the experience of waiting indicates most clearly. #RandolphHarris 2 of 31

Both my organism and my society impose upon me, and upon my inner time, certain sequences of events that involve waiting. I may want to take part in a sports event, but I must wait for my bruised knee to heal. Or again, I must wait until certain papers are processed so that my qualification for the event may be officially established. It may readily be seen that the temporal structure of everyday life is exceedingly complex because the different levels of empirically present temporality must be ongoingly correlated. The temporal structure of everyday life confronts me as a facticity with which I must reckon, that is, with which I must try to synchronize my own projects. I encounter time in everyday reality as continuous and finite. All my existence in this world is continuously ordered by its time, and is indeed enveloped by it. My own life is an episode in the externally factitious stream of time. It was there before I was born, and it will be there after I die. The knowledge of my inevitable death makes this time finite for me. I have only a certain amount of time available for the realization of my projects, and the knowledge of this affects my attitude to these projects. Also, since I do not want to die, this knowledge injects an underlying anxiety into my projects. Thus, I cannot endlessly repeat my participation in sports events. I know that I am getting older. It may even be that this is the last occasion on which I have the chance to participate. My waiting will be anxious to the degree in which the finitude of time impinges upon the project. #RandolphHarris 3 of 31

The same temporal structure, as has already been indicated, is coercive. I cannot reverse at will the sequences imposed by it—“first things first” is an essential element of my knowledge of everyday life. Thus, I cannot take a certain examination before I have passed through certain educational programs, I cannot practice my profession before I have taken this examination, and so on. Also, the same temporal structure provides the historicity that determines my situation in the world of everyday life. I was born on a certain date, entered school on another, started working as a professional on another, and so on. These dates, however, are all “located” within a much more comprehensive history, and this “location” decisively shapes my situation. Thus, I was born in the year of the great bank crash, in which my father lost his wealth, I entered school just before the revolution, I began to work just after the great war broke out, and so forth. The temporal structure of everyday life not only imposes prearranged sequences upon the “agenda” of any single day but also imposes itself upon my biography as a whole. Within the co-ordinates set by this temporal structure, I apprehend both daily “agenda” and overall biography. Clock and calendar ensure that, indeed, I am a “man of my time.” Only within this temporal structure does everyday life retain for me its accent of reality. Thus, in cases where I may be “disoriented” for one reason or another (say, I have been in an automobile accident in which I was knocked unconscious), I feel an almost instinctive urge to “reorient” myself within the temporal structure of everyday life. I look at my watch and try to recall what day it is. By these acts alone, I re-enter the reality of everyday life. #RandolphHarris 4 of 31

So much easier to miss than to hit, to fall on one side or the other. And yet, if only I can get rid of what prevents me, I seem to be so made that I can do it. Then, I “take my time” when my time should be taken, permitting others to take their time too. I do not hurry them or me. When I am in a hurry, it takes longer, and my peace is lost. (This is probably why it took Mrs. Winchester 38 years to build her mansion, which is still incomplete.) Or as one young man said, “I feel that I am going 90 miles an hour inside and 5 miles an hour outside.” When I slow down, the inner speed decreases and the outer speed increases until they match. This is my subjective feeling. (When a small child seems to me to be dawdling and protests, “But I am hurrying,” he may be speaking the truth of himself.) Objectively (as I am seen by others) I have slowed down, may even seem “dull,” but although I “do” less, I accomplish more. I am in harmony with me, and whatever I do goes easily and well. I do not do all that I would like to do, but I do all that I can do (at any time). By limiting myself, I have the feeling of it, throughout my body and my mind, with all the worlds open to me? When I am bored, time slows down, and it accelerates when I am involved. It seems to me that this is true only when I am in the wrong place, where there are these either/ors. There is another place (or world) in which time changes differently: I am not bored. I am involved, and yet I am surprised at how much has got done, that a usual day’s work has taken only a few hours. I look at the clock and am astonished that so little time has passed. During those few hours, time has not seemed to be either fast or slow. Time and I have flown together, so how can I feel it moving or note its speed? It has neither got stuck nor run away from me. I can only be conscious of time when I am not living fully in the present. #RandolphHarris 5 of 31

This masterless slavery in which capitalism enmeshes the worker or the debtor is only debatable ethically as an institution. In principle, the personal conduct of those who participate, on either side of the rulers or of the ruled, is not morally debatable, as such conduct is essentially prescribed by objective situations. If they do not conform, they are threatened by economic bankruptcy, which would, in every respect, be useless. From our special point of view, where the increased fear of the world has led to a flight from occupational pursuits in the private economy, pietism not only turns into something differing in degree but into an element differing in quality. The study of the ego in psychoanalysis has hardly begun to account for the relationship of “inner agency” to social life. Men who share the concerns of an ethnic group, who are contemporaries in a historical era, or who compete and co-operate in economic pursuits are also guided by common images of good and evil. Infinitely varied, these images reflect the elusive nature of cultural differences and of historical change; in the form of contemporary social models, they assume decisive concreteness in every individual’s struggle for ego synthesis—and in every patient’s residence, ethnic background, and occupation are the first items to be radically altered when it is necessary to disguise his personal identity. The essence of the inner dynamics of a case, it is judged, is thereby left intact. The exact nature, then, of the values common to the patient’s background are considered to be so close to the “surface” that they are not necessarily of “psychoanalytic” interest. Contemporary social models are both clinically and theoretically relevant and cannot be shunted off by brief and patronizing tributes to the role “also” played by “social factors.” #RandolphHarris 6 of 31

The general neglect of these factors in psychoanalysis naturally has not furthered a rapprochement with the social sciences. Students of society and history, on the other hand, blithely continue to ignore the simple fact that all individuals are born by mothers; that everybody was once a child; that people and peoples begin in their nurseries; and that society consists of generations in the process of developing from children into parents, destined to absorb the historical changes of their lifetimes and to continue to make history for their descendants. Only psychoanalysis and social science together can eventually chart the course of individual life in the setting of a changing community. Ambitious steps in this direction have been made by eminent psychoanalysts, generally called neo-Freudians, who bypass the efforts of “ego psychology.” We were distressed when we saw ourselves caricatured in patients who, in social life, spread a compulsive attitude of mutual mental denuding under the guise of being alert to the defensive tricks of the ego. And we were dismayed when we saw our purpose of enlightenment perverted into a widespread fatalism, according to which man is nothing but a multiplication of his parents’ faults and an accumulation of his own earlier selves. We must grudgingly admit that even as we were trying to devise, with scientific determinism, a therapy for the few, we were led to promote an ethical disease among the many. The existence and the multiplicity of defensive regressive mechanisms in adolescence were systematically demonstrated in Anna Freud’s The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence. Her book defines inner defense in the widest sense; but it does not foreclose the psychoanalysis of adolescent development. When she states: “The abstract intellectual discussions and speculations in which young people delight are not genuine attempts at solving the tasks set by reality. Their mental activity is rather an indication of a tense alertness for the instinctual processes and the translation into the abstract thought of that which they perceive,” she presents the defensive half of the story of adolescent rumination, the other half being its adaptive functions, and its functions in the history of changing ideas. #RandolphHarris 7 of 31

There is a historical concomitance which teaches us how, in the period between puberty and adulthood, the resources of tradition fuse with new inner resources to create something potentially new: a new person; and with this new person, a new generation, and with that, a new era. The question of what happens to persons, generations, and eras because of guiding ideologies are of postadolescent origin, and are dedicated to the proposition that what we have learned as pathologists must become part of an ecology of the mind before we can take full responsibility for the ideological implications of our knowledge. We cannot even begin to encompass the human life cycle without learning to account for the fact that a human being under observation has grown stage by stage into a social world, always for the worse and for the better, has step by step prepared for him an outer reality made up of human traditions and institutions which utilize and thus nourish his developing capacities, attract and modulate his drives, respond to and delimit his fears and phantasies, and assign to him a position in life appropriate to his psychosocial powers. We cannot even begin to encompass a human being without indicating for each of the stages of his life cycle the framework of social influences and of traditional institutions which determine his perspectives on his more infantile past and on his more adult future. In this sense, we can learn from patients only to the extent that we realize (and the patient realizes) that what is said and done in treatment is based on a formal contract between healer and patient and must be carefully transposed before being applied to the general human condition. This is the reason why the fragments of case histories or psychoanalytic interpretations which flutter around in increasing numbers in our newspapers and magazines seem lost like bats in the daytime. #RandolphHarris 8 of 31

On the other hand, we cannot leave history entirely to nonclinical observers and to professional historians who often all too nobly immerse themselves into the very disguises, rationalizations, and idealizations of this historical process from which it should be their business to separate themselves. Only when the relation of historical forces to the basic functions and stages of the mind has been jointly charted and understood can we begin a psychoanalytic critique of society as such without falling back into mystical or moralistic philosophizing. Dr. Siegmund Freud warned against the possible misuse of his work as an ideology, a “Weltanschauung;” but a man who inspires new ideas has little power to restrict them to the area of his original intentions. And Dr. Freud did not refrain from interpreting other total approaches to man’s condition, such as religion, as consequences of man’s inability to shake off the bonds of his prolonged childhood, and thus, comparable to collective neuroses. The psychological and historical study of the religious crisis of a young great man renews the opportunity to review this assertion in the light of ego-psychology and of theories of psychosocial development. There are four consequences of self-contempt. The first is the compulsive need of certain neurotic types to compare themselves with everybody whom they come in contact, and to their own disadvantage. The other fellow is more impressive, better informed, more interesting, more attractive, better dressed; he has the advantage of age or youth, of a better position, of greater importance. However, even though the comparisons may strike the neurotic himself as lopsided, he does not think them through clearly; of if he does, the feeling of comparative interiority still remains. The comparisons made are not only unfair to himself; they often do not make any sense. Why should an older man who could be proud of his own accomplishments compare himself with a youngster who is a better dancer? Or why should somebody who has never been interested in music feel inferior to musicians? #RandolphHarris 9 of 31

The practice makes sense, however, when we remember the unconscious claims to be superior to others in every regard. We must add here that the neurotic’s pride also demands that he should be superior to everybody and everything. Then, of course, any “superior” skill or quality of others must be disturbing, and must call forth a self-destructive berating. Sometimes the connection operates in reverse: the neurotic, already in a self-berating frame of mind, utilizes the “shining” qualities of others, as he encounters them, to reinforce and buttress his castigating self-criticism. To express it in terms of two people: it is as if an ambitious and sadistic mother used the better marks or cleaner fingernails of Leo’s friend to put Leo to shame. It is insufficient to describe these processes simply as a recoiling from competition. The recoiling from competition in these instances is rather the result of self-disparagement. A second consequence of self-contempt is vulnerability in human relations. Self-contempt makes the neurotic hypersensitive to criticism and rejection. On little or no provocation, he feels that others look down on him, do not take him seriously, do not care for his company, and in fact slight him. His self-contempt adds considerably to the profound uncertainty he has about himself, and hence cannot but make him as profoundly uncertain about the attitudes of others toward him. Being unable to accept himself as he is, he cannot possibly believe that others, knowing him with all his shortcomings, can accept him in a friendly or appreciative spirit. What he feels in deeper layers is much more drastic, and may amount to an unshakable conviction that others plainly despise him. And such a conviction may live in him, although he is not consciously aware of even a trace of self-contempt. Both of these factors—the blind assumption that others despise him and a relative or total awareness of his own self-contempt—point to the fact that the bulk of self-contempt is externalized. This may lead to a subtle poisoning of all his human relations. He may become unable to take any positive feelings of others at their face values. A compliment may, in his mind, register as a sarcastic comment; an expression of sympathy as condescending pity. Somebody wants to see him—it is because he wants something from him. Others express a liking for him—it can only be because they do not know him well, because they themselves are worthless or “neurotic,” or because he has been or could be useful to them. #RandolphHarris 10 of 31

Similarly, incidents which in fact have no hostile meaning are interpreted as evidence of an existing contempt. Somebody has not greeted him on the street or in the theater, has not accepted his invitation, or has not replied right away—it can only be a slight. Somebody makes a good-natured joke about him—it is a clear intent to humiliate him. An objection to, or a criticism of, some suggestion or activity of his does not constitute an honest criticism of the particular activity, et cetera, but becomes evidence of the other’s despising him. The person himself, as we see in analysis, is either unaware of his experiencing his relations with others in this way, or he is unaware of the distortions involved. In the latter case, he may take it for granted that others’ attitudes toward him are really of this sort, and even pride himself on being “realistic.” In the analytic relationship, we can observe to what extent a patient can take it for granted that others look down on him. After much analytic work is done, and the patient is apparently on good friendly terms with his analyst, he may mention casually and without affection that it was also so self-evident to him that the analyst was looking down on him that he did not feel it necessary to mention it or to give it any extended thought. All of these distorted perceptions in human relations are understandable because the attitudes of others are indeed open to several interpretations, particularly when torn out of context, while the externalized self-contempt feels unmistakably real. Also, the self-protective character of such a shift in responsibility is evident. If possible, at all, it is probably intolerable to live with a constantly awake, sharp self-contempt. The neurotic has an unconscious interest in regarding others as the offenders. Although it is painful for him, as it would be for anybody, to feel slighted and rejected, it is less painful than coming face to face within his own self-contempt. It is a long and hard lesson for anybody to learn that others can neither hurt nor establish self-esteem. #RandolphHarris 11 of 31

The vulnerability in human relations caused by self-contempt combines with that brought about by neurotic pride. It is often difficult to say whether a person feels humiliated because something has hurt his pride or because he has externalized his self-contempt. They are so inseparably interwoven that we must tackle such reactions from both angles. Of course, at a given time, one or the other aspect will be the more easily observable and the more accessible. If a person reacts to a seeming disregard with vindictive arrogance, hurt pride is uppermost in the picture. If, as a result of the same provocation, he turns abject and tries to ingratiate himself, as self-contempt sticks out most clearly. However, in either case, the reverse aspect is also operating and should be kept in mind. Thirdly, a person in the clutches of self-contempt often takes too much abuse from others. He may not even recognize a flagrant abuse, whether it be humiliation or exploitation. Even if indignant friends call it to his attention, he tends to minimize or justify the offender’s behavior. This occurs only under certain conditions, such as in a morbid dependency, and is the outcome of a complicated inner constellation. However, essential among the factors producing it is the defenselessness produced by the person’s conviction that he does not deserve any better treatment. For instance, a woman whose husband is flaunting his affairs with other women may be unable to complain or even to feel conscious resentment because she feels unlovable and regards most other women as more attractive. A last consequence to be mentioned is the need to alleviate or balance self-contempt with the attention, regard, appreciation, or love of others. The pursuit of such attention is compulsive because of the compelling need not to be at the mercy of self-contempt. It is also determined by a need to triumph, and may amount to an all-consuming life goal. The result is a total dependence on others for self-evaluation: it rises or falls with the attitudes of others toward him. #RandolphHarris 12 of 31

Thinking along the broader theoretical lines, observations like these help us to understand better why the neurotic clings so tenaciously to the glorified version of himself. He must maintain it because he feels only one alternative: to succumb to the terror of self-contempt. There is thus a vicious circle operating between pride and self-contempt, one always reinforcing the other. This can change only to the extent that he gets interested in the truth about himself. However, again, self-contempt renders it difficult to find himself. As long as his degraded image of himself is real to him, his self appears despicable. Alienation is the name that Dr. Hegel gives to the condition that arises from the experience of the failure of personhood as a conception of the self. When the predominant conception of what it means to be a self fails to capture those elements of my constitution that are essential to my own self-understanding, alienation arises. Intersubjective relations are alienating when others strive to recognize me according to that incomplete and flawed conception of the self. There are several indicators of self-alienation that a person can look for in self or in others: The general capacity for conscious experience is impaired. The person is living “as if in a fog. Nothing is clear to them. Not only their own thoughts and feelings but also other people, and the implications of a situation, are hazy.” There may be a decrease in awareness or concern for the body, for its needs and feelings, or for material possessions such as a house, car, or clothing. There is a loss of the feeling of being an active, determining force in one’s own life. There are a few factors that are responsible for the process of self-alienation which include: The development of compulsive solutions to neurotic conflicts, such as striving for affection, detachment from others, or chronic hostility to others. Active moves away from the real self, such as the drive for glory and striving to live up to an impossible self-ideal. Active moves against the real self, as in self-hate or self-destruction. #RandolphHarris 13 of 31

The consequence of alienation from the self is that the person’s relation to himself has become impersonal. More specifically, in the self-alienated person, pride governs feelings—the individual does not react with spontaneous emotion. Instead, the person feels what he or she should feel. Further, the self-alienated person does not feel in possession of his or her own energies; the person’s powers are not his or her own. Another consequence of self-alienation is an impairment in the ability to assume responsibility for the self. The self-alienated person is lacking in plain, simple honesty about self and his or her life. The lack of honesty manifests itself as an inability to recognize oneself as one really is, without minimizing or exaggerating, an unwillingness to accept the consequences of one’s actions and decisions, and an unwillingness to realize it is up to oneself to do something about one’s difficulties. Self-alienated persons insist that others, fate, or time will solve these difficulties for them. Self-alienation means, basically, that a person is not choosing action by consulting all components of the real self, such as needs and values; instead, the person serves as some part of the real self. However, if the total self is not the source of direction for the individual’s behavior, what is? Dr. Riesmen’s concept of the “inner-directed character” is an excellent illustration of persons whose behavior expresses the dictates of conscience and self-ideal rather than the real self. When choices for action arise, such persons experience a conflict between what they really want to do and what they believe they ought to do. Implicitly, such persons believe that real selves are unreliable guides to conduct, and so they repress them. The consequence of ignoring the real self in favor of a rigid conscience is that these persons may behave in a moral and exemplary fashion, but their real needs are ignored, and they will be perpetually thwarted. #RandolphHarris 14 of 31

The “authoritarian character” is a person who seeks some authority figure to direct his or her conduct. These persons strive to discern what behavior the authority figure expects of them, and they hasten to comply. If there is any conflict between their own wishes and the demands of authority, they habitually suppress their wishes and compulsively comply with the authority’s wishes. Indeed, they experience their real selves as evil or weak, not worth considering. Dr. Fromm interprets the manner in which authoritarian characters perceive authority as a byproduct of real-self repression, followed by a projection to the authority figure of all of one’s own repressed “powers.” Hence, authoritarian characters perceive themselves as weak and the leader as all-powerful and possessing unusual strength and wisdom—the “charismatic” leader. Dr. Riesman’s concept, the “other-directed” character, describes an individual who allows the wishes and expectations of social peers to direct personal actions. The other-directed character becomes sensitized to others’ wishes and actively seeks to comply with them. The result may be popularity and acceptance, but it is purchased at the cost of knowledge of the real self and of thwarting many basic needs. Dr. Riesman’s concept, the “other-directed” character, describes an individual who allows the wishes and expectations of social powers to direct personal actions. The other-directed character becomes sensitized to others’ wishes and actively seeks to comply with them. The result may be popularity and acceptance, but it is purchased at the cost of knowledge of the real self and of thwarting many basic needs. Impulses and emotions are a part of the real self, just as are will and ideals. Everyone has to struggle to reconcile the conflicting demands of impulses, ideals, and the expectations of other people. #RandolphHarris 15 of 31

An impulse-directed person is one who habitually ignores all demands upon behavior save those imposed by personal impulses and feelings. This person ignores the conscience, the rights of other people, even his or her own long-range welfare and growth. All is subordinated to the immediate expression of the feelings. Psychoanalysts refer to such individuals as “instinct-ridden” characterss; they idealize and rationalize their drives and emotions because they cannot voluntarily control them. They are like adult children who have evaded growth. The goal is to get the patient “out of his script” during his treatment hours so he will behave like a real person, called colloquially, “a card-carrying member of the human race.” The chief difficulty to be overcome is the pull of the script, something like the “Id resistance” of Dr. Freud. The unconscious, instinctual forces that oppose the therapeutic process often manifest as the patient’s compulsion to repeat unhealthy patterns rather than explore them. The “resistance” is driven by the id’s fundamental nature to satisfy innate desires and impulses, such as urges for pleasures of the flesh and aggressive urges, and the inherent pleasure principle of immediate gratification. It opposes the ego’s efforts and the superego’s moral constraints by clinging to the “disease” or symptom. Professional patients adopt that role because they decided when they were very young, with encouragement from their parents, to be mental cripples, and may have been helped along by their previous therapists. This is usually a family script, and the brothers and sisters and parents may also be in treatment. A typical example is where a brother or sister is in a psychiatric hospital, where he or she continually “acts out” (as the staff calls it), or “acts crazy,” as Jeff now learns to call it. Jeff is a little huffy, and will soon say quite frankly that he is jealous of his brother or sister, because he or she is in a hospital while Jeff must be contented without-patient therapy. As one man put it, “How come my brother is in a nice plushy mental hospital on the East Coast while I have to be contented with this lousy little therapy group? I was enjoying it much more when I was a professional patient.” #RandolphHarris 16 of 31

While such things are said jokingly, they are the core of the resistance against getting well. First of all, Jeff is losing all the advantages of being in a hospital and all the fun of acting crazy. However, more than that, he says quite frankly (after he begins to understand his script), his Child is scared to get well and cannot accept the permission offered by the therapist and the other group members to do so, because if he does, his mother (in his head) will desert him. No matter how miserable he is with all his fears, anxieties, obsessions, and physical symptoms, he is still better off, he thinks, than being out in the world on his own without his Parent to protect him. At this point, there is a phase where script analysis becomes almost indistinguishable from psychanalytic probing. The protocol of his script becomes the subject of investigation, and the early influences which led him to decide on a not-O.K. position and way of life come under scrutiny. Here is pride at being a neurotic, a paranoid schizophrenic, an addict, or a criminal will begin to emerge, and he may bring in his diary or talk about his plans for writing an autobiography, as so many of his predecessors have done. Even people who are cured of “mental retardation” may have some nostalgia for their previous condition. People who are mentally healthy often do not know what they think or how they really feel until they have a chance to express themselves and to hear themselves and then decide whether that is actually what they believe. Sometimes just saying something aloud to another person is enough to make one realize that they do not fully believe what they have said—which frees them to change their minds. If you do not try to make every disagreement into a federal case, speaking your mind is important and helpful. People do not have to agree on everything. #RandolphHarris 17 of 31

People always think that they understand themselves, and they always think that they are being honest with themselves, and then later, after something happens and they see themselves differently, they can see how wrong they were. One can kid about how they feel until it hurts too much to go on pretending. Like you might walk with a Lego in your shoe, but sooner or later it would hurt too much and one would have to stop walking and get rid of it. Where there is gathered a sufficient number of facts on which to base a reasonably correct decision, it is still possible that one or more fact, of an importance outweighing all the others, could induce a man’s mind to alter the decision. The order of his thoughts may be perfectly logical yet the truth of them may be largely absent. For the premises with which they start may be ready-made theories, the facts upon which they rest may be less important than those which they ignore, and personal factors may have unconsciously accepted the one and chosen the other. Just as mysticism may give the dangerous illusion that it is dealing with reality when it is not, so logic may give the equally dangerous illusion that it is dealing with truth when it too is not doing so. To call a man a “philosopher” when he is only a mere logician is to demean the word. Logic is a useful tool, for certain limited purposes, but it can as easily lead a man into great error as into great wisdom. Let them not mistake exercises in logic for penetration into truth. Logic is always beset by the serious charge that its so-called truths are fallacious ones. For instance, it insists on the law of contradiction, the law which says that a statement of facts cannot be true and false at the same time. However, the careful study of illusions produces conclusions which falsify this law. We do not mean by this criticism to declare logic to be useless. We mean only that it is a good servant but a bad master. If our original assumptions are wrong, then the irony is that the more logically we travel from them to our conclusions, the more distantly we travel from truth. You can have sacred, revelatory, profoundly instructive experience with the Lord in the most miserable experiences of your life—in the worst settings, while enduring the most painful injustices, when facing the most insurmountable odds and opposition you have ever faced. #RandolphHarris 18 of 31

Heroes and heroines are archetypal in that they emanate and embody an immediate, recognizable pattern. Humans know one when they see one. The hero can be seen as the central human archetype of transformation for wholeness. The transformation comes through the hero’s own journey. Like the magical threshold, the sphere of rebirth, the awakening to the flow of forces, and the creation of wakefulness to dissolve the unconscious into timelessness, the hero emerges. Although talk of improving health and fitness is nothing new to emergency response providers, there are signs that it has now been moved to the front burner. As a result of the unacceptable number of line-of-duty deaths every year, movements have come from different directions to ensure that health and fitness standards are developed that apply to what these heroes do. Some argue that firefighting is a strenuous job, and that sudden cardiac arrest is just the cost of doing business. If that were really true, we would see the same trend of fatalities in other physical occupations, such as professional sports. Although professional athletes have to try out each year and firefighters tend to have a longer career, not many active athletes die from overexertion. When a professional team invests a significant amount of money in a player, they insure their investment through proper diet, physical training, and medical observation. Although the award-winning Sacramento Fire Department does not get as much attention or money as an NFL star, they still have a physically demanding job. As the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1583, Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Fighters, explains, firefighters need “to be medically and physically fit in order to perform the required tasks. #RandolphHarris 19 of 31

In every city, there seems to be one place or street where everything seems to happen. In Sacramento, California, one particular block of Capitol Avenue seems to be that place. Just a sampling of events in less than twenty years reveals several major fires, gang activity, drug dealing, mail theft, threats, over sixty-six deaths, animal attacks, stalking, many instances unlawful entries, a few missing persons cases, shootings, hit and run accidents, sexual assaults, felony assault, theft and vandalisms, financial crimes, and miraculous rescues. The amount of death and destruction that happened in just this one block area of the city is unparalleled in the community’s history. Upon one occasion, a night watchman discovered a fire burning. The fire department came quickly, but the blaze had spread to two adjoining buildings. The fire department, however, was able to prevent the massive blaze and stop the spread to the rest of the street. Despite the roaring fire, there were no deaths or injuries. Compared to automobiles, fire apparatus and ambulances do not provide the amount of protection you would expect. Much of the engineering designated to automobile design is related to either fuel efficiency or meeting federal crash standards. In contrast, custom emergency vehicles are engineered more to function and aesthetics. For instance, a modern sports utility vehicle (SUV) with three rows of seats might safely transport seven people. Lap and shoulder seat belts are in every riding position, and side curtain airbags protect the driver and passengers in an intersection crash. Padded seat backs and cushioned door liners assist in containing passengers in the event of a rollover. Compare that to a Type III ambulance with the same wheelbase. It may have lap and shoulder belts for the two front seats and the captain’s chair, yet only provide lab belts for the other bench positions, which are positioned perpendicular to the direction of travel. Although it may be capable of transporting seven occupants, very little restraint protection is provided. Now factor in that some of the occupants in the back will be providing patient care and might not be restrained at all. By the 1980s, most “impaling hazards” had been removed from the dashboards of automobiles, replaced with flush-mount knobs and rounded corners on the dash. Take a look in the back of the ambulance. How many sharp corners, after-market interior modifications, or potential missiles are present during patient transport? Some ambulances do a good job of securing the sharps container for contaminated needles, yet the container has an open top or nonlatching lid. A rollover could pepper the back of the ambulance with poisoned darts. #RandolphHarris 20 of 31

If you see a fire truck stopped in the street without the lights on, be very careful. Sometimes there is an emergency, and you should not pass the fire truck. It might be a good idea to safely turn around and go another way because if you hit someone and they happen to die, you could be charged with manslaughter. Sometimes fire firefighters are getting back into their vehicle, and if you pass the apparatus, you may collide with a firefighter who is on foot. Also, be sure to look at their signals; sometimes emergency vehicles are in motion, albeit slowly, and drivers try to pass them, and this could lead to a dangerous situation. Also, if you are in an intersection when you see an emergency vehicle, continue through the intersection. Drive to the right as soon as it is safe and stop. Obey any direction, order, or signal given by a law enforcement officer or a firefighter. Even if they conflict with existing signs, signals, or laws, follow their orders. When their siren or flashing lights are on, it is against the law to follow within 300 feet of any fire engine, law enforcement vehicle, ambulance, or other emergency vehicle. If you drive to the scene of a fire, collision, or other disaster, you can be arrested. When you do this, you are getting in the way of firefighters, ambulance crews, or other rescue and emergency personnel. The concept of professional courage does not always mean being as tough as nails, either. It also suggests a willingness to listen to other people’s problems, to go to bat for them in a tough situation, and it means knowing just how far they can go. It also means being willing to tell the boss when he or she is wrong. #RandolphHarris 21 of 31

California is the third most expensive state in the nation. A single person making an income above $100,000 is now considered low-income in five counties in California. This distinction now applies to individuals living in Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, and Marin counties. In 37 percent of counties, a family of four living on a six-figure income is now considered low-income. In fact, Governor Gavin Newsom of Democratic controlled California, brags about being the world’s “fifth largest economy,” but it also facing a $12 billion deficit, looking to cut $747 million for state worker’s pay, pushing to keep medical insurance for illegal immigrants, but wants to cut medical for anyone who has assets over $2,000 and the state has the largest homeless population in the nation. If they are all officially counted, California has approximately 4 million homeless people. The highest home prices in the nation, the highest taxes, and the most unfriendly business regulations known to man. The average home price in California is nearly $1,000,000.00 USD, while the average salary is $96,036.00, meaning that most Californians cannot even afford to buy a home. California is having an affordability crisis. In 2025, many people in California saw their bills increase by an estimated $500 a month. This includes items such as food, automobile insurance, homeowners’ insurance, and electricity. In fact, more than 3 million people in California are facing household hardship, and more than 300,000 of them are facing eviction soon. This comes at a time when California is having a shortage of affordable housing. This is caused by nearly half a century-old laws that discourage home sales and encourage higher rents. #RandolphHarris 22 of 31

Meanwhile, China, where we are sending all our jobs and money, has more than 50 ghost cities, with 65 million vacant homes. Ghost cities are regions will housing has been overdeveloped to the point that these places are uninhabited. Because California is so hostile towards people and businesses, more than 360 companies have fled the state since 2020. Businesses like Chevron, SpaceX, Oracle, and Hewlett-Packard are among the names on that list. Also, more than 500,000 people a year are abandoning California because it is too expensive to live in, Gavin Newsom has criminalized homelessness and actually started arresting people without homes, crime is out of control, and they are losing their jobs due to companies relocating. More than 100 companies have announced layoffs in California for 2025. Intel is cutting 15,000 jobs, PayPal 2,500, and Meta has terminated 4,000 employees. California also has the highest unemployment rate in the country at 5.4 percent, while the national average is 4.1 percent. The California crisis created by Democrats is driving up home prices and mortgages, and rents all over the nation and the world, making living unaffordable for all, and advocates say the crisis is far from over. Accordingly, California has more than 3.5 million illegal immigrants. Having the Southern American border open and not having American farmland protected, not producing beef, poultry, fish, fruit, produce and dairy in America, and without American goods and services being our number one manufactured and selling items, America has created a dangerous and significantly elevated risks to national security, national economic security, and national public health. Some people may believe that these claims are overstated, but by not routinely monitoring Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CEVs) or other security-relevant alerts, such as the end-of-life of machinery is how the Oroville Dam Crisis occurred in 2017. #RandolphHarris 23 of 31

Other crises that have occurred due to neglect of critical infrastructure are the 2025 Palisades fires because Southern California ran out of water, when they are located next to an ocean and they could have simply created desalination plants to help with the water shortage. The water is so plentiful that it is currently eroding land and causing homes to fall into the sea. Desalination has been identified as one technology that will help solve California’s water scarcity problem. Desalination is a cost-effective technology that can transform an abundance of salt water into a reliable supply of potable, fresh water, which is a great way to fight climate change and have enough water for our region’s water requirements. Ras Al Khair, Saudi Arabia, is producing 1,036,000 meters (273,682,192) per day of desalinated water. As we see gangs fighting with federal law enforcement, states and cities refusing to honor federal laws, and politicians showing an utter disregard for the Constitution of the United States of America, anarchy is becoming increasingly common. Anarchism is a cluster of doctrines and attitudes centered on the belief that government is both harmful and unnecessary. Derived from the Greek root anarchos, meaning “without authority,” anarchism, anarchist, and anarchy are used to express both approval and disapproval. The anarchist denies man-made laws, regards property as a means of tyranny, and believes that crimes are merely the product of property and authority. #RandolphHarris 24 of 31

However, the anarchist would argue that their denial of constitutions and governments leads not to “no justice” but to the real justice inherent in the free development of human sociality—the natural inclination, when unfettered by laws, to live according to the principles and practice of mutual aid. Anarchism is also a form of treason. Treason, the crime of betraying a nation or a sovereign by acts considered dangerous to security. In English law, treason includes the levying of war against the government and the giving of aid and comfort to the monarch’s enemies. In the United States of America, treason was defined restrictively by the framers of the Constitution. Treason against the United States of America “shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them aid and comfort,” which is something that many politicians are currently guilty of. The American government should know all exploitable vulnerabilities and fix them before the situation becomes a crisis. Failure to take such mitigating actions is dangerous and significantly elevates risk to national security, national economic security, and national public health and safety. The American government must understand that significant time and resources must be invested in America. They must also encourage corporations to plan for both mitigating safety vulnerabilities in the short term and eliminating them in the long term. For instance, a company might begin by reaching out to the federal, state, or local government and requesting tax incentives to provide security to dangerous communities, to help the government repair bridges and potholes. #RandolphHarris 25 of 31

America needs an approach to eliminate safety vulnerabilities in American cities. There needs to be a road map by the end of 2025, outlining a prioritized approach to eliminate crisis situations in America. There is enough money to send aid to foreign nations, but the American government does not have enough money to care for its infrastructure, provide adequate resources, or end the affordable housing crisis. Nor is there enough money to fund other national critical functions (NCFs). These bad practices of putting America and Americans last are considered exceptionally risky, particularly to national security, national economic security, and national public health and safety. In 2024, Americans spent $100 billion on Japanese cars. As a result, the American automobile trade deficit with Japan was $39 billion. The maximum percentage of your gross income that you should earmark for a monthly mortgage payment is calculated at 28 percent, and no more than 36 percent of your gross income to all debts, including mortgage. If you take 28 percent of the median household income per home in Sacramento County, homeowners can only afford a mortgage of $2,070.23 per month. And if you take 36 percent of their gross income to all debts, including mortgage, they should be devoting no more than $2,661.72 a month to these debts. The mortgage lenders must be using some kind of sorcery to get buyers into these expensive homes. To afford one of these homes using traditional guidelines, a household would need to gross $11,280.24 per month or $135,362.88 per year, but the median household in Sacramento County is grossing $7,393.67 a month or $88,724.00 annually, and that typically means two to four people in the home are working and contributing to the mortgage. #RandolphHarris 26 of 31

Home prices in Sacramento County are rivaling the Bay Area. Historically, homes in the Bay Area have been more expensive because they have higher-paying jobs, a larger population, and the Bay Area is a tourist destination. Contributing to the housing affordability crisis is Gavin Newsom, who has been lavishing illegal immigrants with taxpayer-funded resources and cash aid. The State of California has a budget deficit of $12 billion because Governor Gavin Newsom granted 700,000 illegal immigrants free health care, which costs taxpayers $3 billion annually. At the same time, Newsom cut vital programs for veterans, school children, the disabled, and the homeless. Additionally, Newsom seems to be uneducated about economics and is proposing to fast-track his plan to build a $20 billion water tunnel beneath the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, which would eliminate environmental reviews and limit avenues for legal challenges. Gavin Newsom only cares about the environment when his policies allow him to raise taxes and restrict freedoms. To further highlight this illustration, Mexico has been causing one of America’s worst environmental disasters. Fifty million gallons a day of industrial chemicals, untreated sewage, and trash flow from Tijuana, Mexico, into southern San Diego County daily. This toxic waste has been turning up on Imperial Beach and is causing the miles of white sands to become polluted and the ocean breeze to smell of poop, which has been sickening residents and wildlife and costing San Diego millions in the form of lost tourism and health problems. The problem has been going on for more than a century. #RandolphHarris 27 of 31

Drug cartels have been threatening the health and safety of Native American communities. The trafficking of dangerous and illegal drugs into their territories is leading to a second genocide. The overdose rate for Indigenous people is 42 percent higher than the national average. A recent bust on Montana’s Blackfeet Nation’s Tribal Reservation resulted in the seizure of more than 700,000 fentanyl pills, which was the largest bust in Montana history. Recently, the Blackfeet Nation had to declare a state of emergency after facing 17 overdoses in just one week. There are only 6.8 million Native Americans left in the world, which is 2 percent of the American population. We should be doing more to protect these proud and honorable people; they should not want for anything. People rush and give away resources to illegal immigrants, but totally disregard the Indigenous people of this land, as their race silently fades away into extinction. We must secure our borders and increase federal funding to Native American tribes so we can save this precious population. Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom has given billions of taxpayer dollars away to illegal immigrants and protected them from law enforcement, while arresting law-abiding Americans because they cannot afford to pay rent or mortgage, and the homeless shelters are unsafe, overcrowded, and have restrictions on who is allowed inside. He has also totally ignored the cartel problems on American lands. Clean air, water, land, and preserving our heritage are extremely important. We cannot just allow criminals to kill off the people who are native to this land and do nothing about it. Wars have been started over governments that tax citizens without representation. Taxation without representation is what led to the American Revolution. #RandolphHarris 28 of 31

Much like the land crisis in Las Vegas, we could also run out of land to farm and will not be able to grow or cultivate our own food. We can protect American farmland and support American farmers by buying American made beef, poultry, dairy, and produce. Also, country of origin labeling is very important so Americans can know where their food is coming from and can support American farmers and ranchers. As money flows, it influences further investment. Save the land that sustains us by protecting American farmland. Once the land is built on, we lose it forever. And in the future, there may be food wars. Also, to ensure that we have farmland and buildable land for future use, we need to start limiting the number of people allowed to immigrate to America. Perhaps with the immigrants we do allow into America, there needs to be a diversity program to make sure we have a population that equally represents all races of people. If Americans continue to spend money on American products, then more need to be made to keep up the inventory. When investors notice these goods are selling, it gives them the confidence to pour more money into that local business. It shows that people want these goods made in America and pressures investors to keep these goods and services in America. The jobs stay here, the business stays in America, wages naturally increase, and more money is invested to keep up with demand. This reduces the burden on the taxpayer. When you support American businesses, that money stays in our economy and can help to reduce the national debt. The government creates debt by borrowing from businesses in the private sector or from foreign countries. It also increases the national debt by spending more than it gains in tax revenue in a fiscal year. #RandolphHarris 29 of 31

When people shop locally, more tax money stays in the economy and goes to the government. This way, it keeps more money in our national economy and keeps more jobs located in America which also sends more taxes to the government, which can again help to reduce the national debt. When you buy foreign goods, these companies usually have lighter tax loads or exemptions, meaning less money for the national debt, plus you are helping to strengthen these foreign nations by sending more money overseas. Buying American-made products is also better for the environment and helps to reduce the carbon footprint because these products do not have to travel nearly as far. Furthermore, American companies and manufacturers are held to much higher standards on pollution. American companies must be more careful about air, land, and water pollution and have proper ways to dispose of waste. Moreover, please remember to respect law and order and treat your elders with the utmost dignity and kindness possible. And take your education seriously so that you will be successful in life and make your family proud. #RandolphHarris 30 of 31

As you can see, President Donald Trump and his pledge to “Make America Great Again” is exactly what America needs to save the country and the American people. As of 31 August 2025, President Trump has brought $8 Billion in Tariff revenue into America and hundreds of thousands of new jobs. However, if President Trump’s Tariffs are deemed illegal by the Supreme Court, taxpayers will have to pay back trillions and trillions of dollars. And yes, diversity is important, so you can see why it is also important to preserve blonde hair and blue eyes, as the people with these characteristics are becoming a minority in America. We must think before we can understand the soul’s existence; we must understand before we can realize it. The earliest beginnings of thought, as apart from instinct, when it was itself still but a lurking tendency, belong far back in primeval time. The human intellect as we find it today, so rich and developed an instrument for the consciousness of the ego, did not arrive at this fullness without a series of graduated stages. We have had plenty of scientific thinking, business thinking, and political thinking long enough, but we have had very little inspired thinking. That is the world’s need. The intellect is cradled in selfishness but runs the evolutionary track into reason, where it will one day finish at the winning-post of selflessness. As a reminder, parents, please teach your children to love America and be patriotic citizens, and to buy goods and services made in America. It is also important to respect law and order and treat your elders with respect. Then conquer we must, when our cause is just, and this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’ And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” #RandolphHarris 31 of 31

According to locals, over a century ago, the land that houses The Winchester Mansion had been vacant forever. Then, sometime in the early afternoon of Saturday, March 13, 1886, Sheriff Angel Camilio began getting reports that a massive castle made of wood had suddenly appeared. Gables rose, towers peaked into the sky as the mansion mushroomed into a labyrinth overnight.

The house’s sudden manifestation had been both disconcerting and fascinating to the community. Some felt dark curses flowing from the estate, and things moving around in the darkness. Others saw a fairytale castle glimmering in the spring sunlight. Perhaps this is why there are no records of construction, no blueprints, and no permits filed with the county. Come and see what secrets this so-called, “Winchester Mystery House” may hold.

Experience an unforgettable journey back to the time of kings and queens with this entry ticket for The Winchester Mansion in Santa Clara, California, which was the residence of Heiress Sarah L.
