Your Body is a Temple

All flesh is not the same: Men have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another, fish another. There are also Heavenly bodies and there are Earthly bodies; but the splendor of the Heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the Earthly bodies is another. The Sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another, and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor. So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raise in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So it is written: The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam, a life-giving sprit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was out of the dust of the Earth, the second man from Heaven. As was the Earthly man, so are those who are of the Earth; and as is the man from Heaven, so also are those who are of Heaven. And just as we have borne the likeness of the Earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from Heaven. I declare to you brother, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed–in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true.

Bad company corrupts good character. Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say to this your shame. We are mostly accustomed to look upon all opposition which is not animate as that of the stolid, inexorable hand of indifference, which wears out the patience more than the strength. We are not saved only to be instruments for God, but to his sons and daughters. As His disciples, our lives must be a holy example of the reality of our message. Even the natural heart of the unsaved will serve if called upon to do so, but it takes a heart broken by conviction of sin, baptized by the Holy Spirit, and crushed into submission to Gog’s purpose to make a person’s life a sacred example of God’s message. The only way to be obedient to the Heavenly vision is to give our utmost for His highest—our best for God’s glory. This can be accomplished only when we make a determination to continually remember God’s vision. However, the best way to be is obedient in the details of our everyday life. The goal is self-control. Try to directly alter troublesome thoughts and actions. You do not need people to pry into your past or emotions and conflicts; you simply need to break the habit of drinking too many colas. Even when more serious problems are at stake, techniques like the self-control have proved valuable. If you have learned responses that cause problems, then you can change these issues by relearning more appropriate responses. Behavior modification is any classical or operant condition to directly alter human behavior.

We cannot feel, or if we feel we cannot so intensely feel, our oneness, except by dividing ourselves from the World. Every man thinks that perfection, that he is himself; that the only knowledge that he possesses; and that the only pleasure that he pursues. Trust me, there are as many ways of living as there are men, and one is no fit to lead another, than a bird to lead a fish, or a fish a quadruped. Then the LORD God Almighty will have mercy. You oppress the righteous and take bribes and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts. Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times for the times are unlovely. Seek good, not bad, that you may life. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Do not like bad, love well; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph. There will be wailing in all the streets and cries of anguish in every public square. The farmers will be summoned to weep and the mourners to wail. There will be wailing in all the vineyards, for I will past through your midst, says the LORD. Why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.

He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. However, the one who hear my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete. Imagine that you are eating a chocolate bar, and then suddenly you discover that you just half of a chocolate laxative. You vomit. Months pass before you eat chocolate again without feeling ill. You now have a conditioned aversion to chocolate. (A condition aversion is a learned disliked or negative emotional response to some stimulus.) For example, is every one of your neighbors is women, and all of them are mean and friends with each other, you will have a conditioned aversion in your generalizations about women.  How is a conditioned aversion used in Therapy? This notion, which establishes the nature of the serpent’s role in sexual symbolism rather concisely, also summarized the character of the male boundary fear. It was thought by the ancients, and is still believed by the European peasantry, that during sexual conjunction the male serpent introduces its head into the mouth of the female, and that the latter gnaws and bites it off, thus becoming fecundated.

The serpent represents, among other things, the widespread notion of female vagina dentate (Latin for toothed vagina) describes a folk tale in which a woman’s vagina is reported to contain teeth, with associated implication that sexual intercourse might result in injury, emasculation or castration for the man involved, and is often portrayed biting the penis. The serpent is not so much a phallic symbol, but the symbol of oral aggression against the phallus. The trivial realities upon which these grotesque fears are based are nothing more than the ejaculation and detumescence, with the accompanying emotional quiescence. The oral-narcissistic conflict translates detumescence into castration-what once was is no longer—ejaculation into vampirism, and satiation into death. Concern over the loss of semen is rife in Asian countries, where hunger and deprivation contribute to oral definitions of sexuality. However, the sudden emotional quiescence is probably the most powerful factor in activating male fears, particularly in societies where masculine prestige is strongly dependent upon activity of some type. Alexander is reputed to have reported that only sleep and sexual intercourse made him conscious of his mortality. The fear of penetration usually betokens other boundary fears, such as those found in a patient: he was afraid to have intercourse because he is allergic to latex.

There was no reason for him to have sex, as he could not reproduce and orgasms are said to be painful. In two other cases the father’s embrace is feared as lethal. The association between snakes and death, and even in this sense, however, the snake as phallus is relatively infrequent in Greek myth, and it may be that the obstinacy with which psychoanalysts cling to this equation is based on a genuine cultural difference between Greece and Victorian Europe. It is assumed today that the fear of snakes is found primarily among women (partly perhaps because Victorian ladies were expected to be somewhat phobic), but this was certainly not true in ancient Greece. I have already related how Alexander’s mother, Olympias, slept peacefully (I refer to the presumed reality, not the associated myth) beside a serpent; and Plutarch reported that tells of wild Dionysian dancing with serpents, which wound themselves around the women and their spears and chaplets, frightening the men out of their wits. We would expect, from our analysis thus far, that in given culture the male would also be phobic of sexual encounter and such intimate situations and sexual innuendos tends to inflict its anxieties on him, so that the difference would be far from absolute. We find his fears are justified. They make too many demands of the young man. Psyche begs him ceaselessly to let her see her sisters, so she can flaunt her good fortune; he yields, they frighten her with the snake story, and she peeks at him, discovering that it is indeed a handsome boy in bed, sleeping alone peacefully, rather than a serpentine mass of transference. However, it is too late, she has hurt him, and he leaves.

Psyche wanders from one mother-goddess to another, but they all refuse her, and she finally comes face to face with her angry mother-in-law, Aaliyah, who sets her a series of impossible tasks, including sending her to the underworld. She manages to perform them, however, and is reunited with her husband, Eros. Thus she resolves the conflict by returning to the source of it and fulfilling her apparently insatiable needs (which she has thoughtlessly projected onto the mother figure, perhaps with some psychological justice). Note that while in the underworld, Psych must not permit herself to accept any appetizing food or comforts, nor nature any of those who seek help; she must maintain a cold, narcissistic detachment—otherwise, as is always the case with such tales, the visit will be permanent. For going to Tartarus and back is the precise equivalent of the ultimate insatiable need—the desire for the complete peace and security of the womb, without being destroyed.  I noted earlier that while the serpent was associated with death and fears of the dead, it also connoted immortality. In a similar fashion, the serpent appears as a homeopathic remedy for the fears of boundary violation which sexuality arouses in orally fixated individuals. The snake is often utilized as a bisexual symbol, and bisexuality, like parthenogenesis, is an obvious solution to boundary fears.

However, while the parthenogenetic fantasy eliminates the male intruder, it does not resolve the more fundamental problem of sexual limitation. The oral-narcissistic conflict, it will be recalled, arises from a failure to cope with the loss of the infantile illusion of oneness with the World, of completeness and self-sufficiency. Almost everyone has a phobia or two. Many people fear heights, snakes, public speaking, spiders, and so forth. Usually this causes little difficulty because the person carefully avoids feared situations. However, consider the following: an entertainer with stage fright, a student with test anxiety, a reporter who fears people, and aspiring producers who fears heights, or a newlywed with a fear of sexual intimacy. Each may be hampered enough by fears or anxieties to seek aid. Now about the collection for God’s people: Do what I told the financial advisors to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Sacramento. If it seems advisable for me to go also, they will accompany me. If anyone does not love the Lord—a curse be on them. Come, O Lord! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love to all of you in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Inelastic Hope

Inelastic hope is a situation, in which the supply and demand for a good or service are unaffected, when the price of that good or service changes. Inelastic means that when the price goes up, consumers’ buying habits stay about the same, and when the price goes down, consumers’ buying habits also remain unchanged. Mankind is getting so far beyond the childhood of their race that they scorn to be happy any longer. We have yet to learn again the forgotten art of gaiety. The human mind, in its eager, though too often unavailing, struggle after happiness, in being well deceived of human happiness, the mind must first focus on Christian duties.   If there is a human being I could envy, it would be the one who can raise the desponding heart to hope and peace. To hope for better days is half to deserve them. What likelihood of corrupting a man who has no hope of ambition? Just to tear his block down. Hope gives an ardor which subsides in certainty. A lover’s hope resembles the bean in the nursery tale—let it once take root, and it will grow so rapidly, that in the course of a few hours the giant Imagination builds a castle on the top and by and by comes Disappointment with the curtal axe, and hews down both the plant and the superstructure. The greatest of painters only once painted a mysteriously divine child; he could not have told how he did it, and we cannot tell why we feel it to be divine.

There are stories laid up in our human nature that our understandings can make no complete inventory of. As the great man hath his different kinds of salutation, so the porter to some bows with respect, to others with a smile, to some he bows more, to others less low, to others not at all. Some he lets in, and others he shuts out. The nature of man is far from being itself evil; it abounds with benevolence, charity, and pity, coveting praise and honor, and shinning shame and disgrace. Bad education, bad habits, and bad customs, debauch our nature, and drive it headlong as it were into vice. No man is born into the World without his particular allotment. Then I heard a loud voice in Heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. Therefore rejoice, you Heavens and you who dwell in them! However, woe to the Earth and the Sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short. When the dragon saw that he has been hurled to the Earth, he pursued the woman who had given the two wings of a great eagle, so that he might fly to the place prepared for her in the desert, where she would be take care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach. Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. However, the Earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth.

Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages. Who will not fear you, O, Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed. After this, I looked and in Heaven the temple, that is, the tabernacle of the Testimony, was opened. Out of them temple came the seven angels with the seven plagues. They were dressed in clean, shining linen and wore golden sashes around their chest. Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls filled with the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed. Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the Earth.” The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land, and ugly and painful sores broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshipped his image. The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead man, and every living thing in the sea died. The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood. Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say: “You are just in these judgments, you are and who were, the Holy One, because you have so judges; for they have shed the blood of your saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.”

And I heard the altar respond: “Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are your judgments.” The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the Sun, and the Sun was given power to scorch people with fire. They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him. The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was plunged into darkness. Men gnawed their tongues in agony and cursed God of Heaven because of their pains and their sores, but they refused to repent of what they had done. The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. Then I saw three evil spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. They are spirits of demons performing miraculous signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole World, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty. “Behold I come like a New York minute! Blessed is he who stays awake and keeps his clothes with hum, so that he may not go naked and be shamefully exposed.” Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of them temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!” Then there came flashes of lightening, rumbling, peals of thunder and severe earthquake. No earthquake like this has ever occurred since man has been on Earth, so tremendous was the quake. The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Sacramento the Great and gave the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath. Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found. There he sat, his very indifference speaking a nature in which there lurked no civilized hypocrisies and bland deceits. Every generation has its improvements. No limits to the impudence of an impudent man. If you would have your son to walk honorably through the World, you must not attempt to clear the stones from his path, but teach him to walk firmly over them—not insist upon leading him by the hand, but let him learn to go alone. Honest indignation does sometimes counsel us wisely. Philosophy never had any remedy that can cure an indifferent mind.

Love is a Delight, but Hate a Torment

To be a World class city means desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and to have pride in possessions. Sacramento, California is a loving community and a great place to raise a family. They want to keep their treasure hidden and land untouched. The city of Sacramento takes no part in the unfruitful works of the unlovely, but instead exposes them. As he goes through childhood, the individual moves from being dominated by the need to learn and maintain his safety and security to stage of testing out his abilities in a more social area. In this stage, which comes in middle childhood and early adolescence, he needs assurance that he has a permanent place in the family, that his parents value and love him. He spends more and more time out of his home, as he goes to  school and outside to play, but he needs as a base the sense that his home and family’s love are always there, whenever he decides to return. Many children test this out by running away, pushing parents to declare that their love is flexible and stretchable. Parents may fail to recognize that running away is a testing of the quality of their love, not a rejection of that love. During this time, a child often adopts new adults into his life: teachers, friends, others’ parents, playground supervisors, or scout leaders. An insecure parent faced with this situation may think he or she has failed and the child has abandoned him or her for another seemingly more competent or more loving adult. Of course, if parents really are not giving enough love or feeling of belonging, the child may actually be going outside his home to satisfy those needs. However, usually this is not the motivation. A fixation is an abnormal attachment to some person, object, or level of development. Those needs which he shares with the animals….are important. ….However, even their complete satisfaction is not a sufficient condition for sanity and mental health. These depend on the satisfaction of those needs and passions which are specifically human, and which stem from the conditions of the human situation: the need for relatedness, transcendence, rootedness, the need for a sense of identity, and the need for a frame of orientation and devotion.

A child who finds that his parents are threatened or angered by such testing often panics. Many a child assumes that love has a price tag on it—is subject to conditions, as in a contract. And unfortunately, there are parents who attach strings: “I will love you if you will just work hard and get good grades. I do not love you when you run away.” These may seem like fairly innocent comments to a parent, but they can be a real source of fear for children. As a young person moves into adolescence, assuming that his survival needs are met and he has gained a sense of autonomy, security, and love, he now faces a still more difficult task. Now, the child-become-adolescent must begin to answer the difficult questions, “Who am I?” and seek satisfaction for his individuality needs. Disaster, depression and sorrow often precede illness. Taylor (our intrepid student) found after finals week, stressful events reduce the body’s natural defenses against disease. More surprising is the finding that major life changes—both good and bad—can increase susceptibility to accidents or illness. How can I tell if I am subjecting myself to too much stress? Immediately after the distress of those days, the Sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. Some 30 years ago, Dr. Thomas Holmes and his associates developed a rating scale to estimate the health hazards faced when stresses add up. According to Dr. Holmes, there is a high chance of illness or accident when you are stressed out to the point you do not feel well. Research has also shown that the health of college students is also affected by stressful events, such as entering college, changing majors, or the breakup of a steady relationship. People who have high stress scores are much more likely to actually get a cold. There must be more to stress than major life changes. Is there not a link between ongoing stresses and health?

When a man of robust and vigorous constitution has a fit of sickness, it produces a much more powerful effect than the same indisposition upon a delicate valetudinarian. Nature is health; for health is good, and nature cannot work ill. As little can she work error, get nature, and you will get well. In addition to having a direct impact, major life events spawn countless daily frustrations and irritations. Also, many of us face ongoing stresses at work or at home that do not involve major life changes. The impact of minor, but frequent stresses, such as distressing daily annoyances, hassles, or microstressors takes a toll on your well-being. Hassles range from traffic hams to losing classroom notes and photographs; from an argument with a neighbor to an employer’s unrealistic demands. However, you have to realize that the stress occurs in people, not in the environment. Stress is always related to personality, values, perceptions, and personal resources.  What can be done about stress and feeling excessively hassled? We know not what we do when we hate. Hate is a thankless thing. So, let us only hate hatred; and once give love play, we will fall in love with a unicorn. Ah! The easiest way is the best; and to hate, a man must work hard. A good response is to use stress management skills. For serious problems, stress management should be learned directly from a doctor or at a stress clinic. Where ordinary stresses are involved, there is much you can do on your own. The maximum of the healthy man is: up, and have it out in exercise when sleep is for foisting base coin of dreams upon you. And as the healthy only are fit to live, their maxims should be law. Too much health is inductive disease. As we have screen, chronic or repeated stress can damage physical health, as well as upset emotional well-being. Prolonged stress reactions are closely related to a large number of psychosomatic illnesses. In psychological factors contribute to actual bodily damage or to damage changes in bodily functioning. Psychosomatic problems, therefore, are not the same as hypochondria. Hypochondriacs imaginary that they suffer from disease.

There is nothing imaginary about asthma, a migraine headache, or high blood pressure. Do no harm to others for the sake of any good it may do you. An injury is the object of anger, danger of fear, and praise of vanity; goodness is the object of love. Never trust the man who hath reason to suspect that you know he hath injured you.  Severe psychosomatic disorders can be fatal. The person who says, “Oh, it is just psychosomatic” misunderstands the seriousness of stress-related diseases. Are stomach ulcers psychosomatic? For many years, stomach ulcers were thought to be caused by stress. However, recent medical research has linked stress and stomach ulcers that they form and believe that they are an infection caused by stress, which manifests bacterial infections of the stomach. Stress and lifestyle factors can contribute to stomach infection. However, it is more likely that a person suffering from stomach pain has functional dyspepsia. This psychosomatic disorder causes ulcer-like pain, but does not make holes in the stomach lining. The most common psychosomatic problems are gastrointestinal and respiratory (dyspepsia and asthma, for example), but many other exist. Typical problems include eczema (skin rash), hives, migraine headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension (high blood pressure), colitis (ulceration of the colon), and heart disease. Actually, these are only the major problems. Lesser health complaints are also frequently stress related. Typical examples include sore muscle, headaches, neck aches, backaches, indigestion, constipation, chronic diarrhea, fatigue, insomnia, premenstrual problems, and sexual dysfunctions. For some of these problems biofeedback may be helpful.

Neither love nor valor can withstand the influence of that sea-demon, [seasickness]. It is estimated that at least half of all patients who see a doctor have a psychosomatic disorder or an illness that is complicated by psychosomatic symptoms. Good and bad events occur in all lives. What separates happy people form those who are unhappy is largely a matter of attitude. Happy people tend to see their lives in more optimistic terms, even when trouble comes their way. For example, happier people tend to find humor in disappointments. They look at setbacks as challenges. They are strengthened by losses. Overall, happiness tends to be related to hardiness. It is a general personal characteristic, not simply a reaction to circumstances. At this point, we have left a basic issue unexplained: How does stress, and our response to it, translate into disease? The answer seems to lie in the body’s defenses against stress, a pattern known as the general adaptation syndrome. Researchers have noticed that the first symptoms of almost any disease or trauma (poisoning, infection, injury, or stress) are almost identical. The body responds in the same way to any stress, be it infection, failure, embarrassment, a new job, trouble at school, or a stormy romance. The G.A.S. consists of three stages: an alarm reaction, a stage of resistance, and a stage of exhaustion.

There is a reason that countries in the tropics tend to suffer disproportionately from deadly infectious disease. The heat and humidity makes it easier for many pathogens to survive and thrive—especially those borne by parasites and insects. That includes malaria, which kills 1 million people a year and afflicts as many as 1 billion people in 109 countries throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America. As global temperatures rise, the heat will likely enhance the ability of infected mosquitoes to transmit the disease and widen the geographical distribution of the bugs. Climate change will not be the only factor affecting the spread of malaria—far more important than temperature is the ability of governments to control the disease, which is why the rich tropical country of Singapore has all but wiped out malaria. However, a warmer World will be one in which malaria and other tropical diseases are an even greater threat to the World’s most vulnerable people, and in that day you will ask me nothing. If anything is a mystery to you and is coming between you and God, never look for the explanation in your mind, but look for it in your heart, your true inner nature—that is where the problem is.

Once your inner spiritual nature is willing to submit to the life of Jesus, your understanding will be perfectly clear, and you will come to the place where there is no distance between the Father and you, His child, because the Lord has made you one. When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say. However, at that very moment, God said to him: You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?! This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself, but is not rich toward God.  Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And you can expect that as long as you follow his rules, God will provide for you, too. Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

Love and Esteem Needs

There are no devils but those which are begotten upon selfishness and reared by cunning. There are similarities between learned helplessness and depression. Both are marked by feelings of despondency, powerlessness, and hopelessness. To be depriving themselves of the advantage of other eyes and other judgments might be an evil even beyond the loss of present pleasure. Helpless humans display decreased activity, lowered aggression, blunted appetite, and a loss of sex drive, and tend to see themselves as failing, even when they are not. A true friendship with God brings out true delight. This friendship means being so intimately in touch with God that you never even need to ask Him to show you His will. It is evidence of a level of intimacy which confirms that you are nearing the final stage of your discipline in the life of faith. When you have a right-standing relationship with God, you have a life of freedom, liberty, and delight; you are God’s will. To deny a man the preferment which he merits, and to give it to another man who doth not, is a manifest act of injustice, and is consequently inconsistent with both honor and honesty. Satan has faithful instruments, and the dedication of these humans, to ungodly behavior, is a stronger bond than the ties of virtue. Depression is one of the most widespread emotional problems, and it undoubtedly has man causes. However, learned helplessness seems to explain many cases of depression and hopelessness.

For example, the fate of Archie, age 15, and a young man. For Archie, school is an unending series of shocks and failures. Other students, especially the older women, treat him as if they have lost their minds; in class he rarely answers questions because he does not know some of the words. He feels knocked down everywhere he turns. Is there such depravity in man as that he should injure another without benefit to himself? There is no human institution, however wise and salutary in its natural effects, which the depravity of a man cannot prevent to the most pernicious purpose. Men will not be depraved beyond the persuasion of some motive, and self-interest will often be the parent of social obligation. These may not be electric shocks, but they are certainly emotional shocks, and Archie has learned to feel helpless to prevent them. When he leaves school, his chances of success will be poor unless he has a talent he can hone. He has learned to passively endure whatever shocks life has in store in him. Therefore, make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as you were told, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. Do not let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming to be God himself.

The secret power of the lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so until he is taken out of the way. The people who do wrong do not believe the truth, but have delighted in unmentionable ways. Because men are by nature prone to sin, is therefore the devil a good being, which eternally solicits and prompts them to it? It seems obvious, for instance, that someone like Archie would benefit from an educational program that would allow him to succeed repeatedly. In mastery training, responses are reinforced that lead to a mastery of a threat or control over one’s environment. People who undergo such training become more resistant to learned vulnerability. For example, people who learn to run from trouble become more persistent in trying to flee inescapable drama and sad stories. In effect, they will not give up, even when the situation really looks destitute. Such findings suggest that we might be able to immunize people against defenselessness and despair by allowing them to master difficult challenges. The people who stand up to the rigors of aggression, and learn to survive are healthier than the average person. Do not engage in conflict. Do not feed it. Similarly, psychologist have found that the mental and physical health of seniors, who live in dorms or nursing homes, can be improved by giving them more control over their lives.

Things as snack as choosing what to eat for lunch or being allowed to decorate one’s room can be enough to counteract feelings of feebleness. Men will not be depraved beyond the persuasion of some motive, and self-interest will often by the parent of social obligation. Finally, the value of confidence should not be overlooked. As fragile as this emotion seems to be, it is a powerful antidote to unhappiness and weakness. You can always control your own behavior, even if it means looking like a wimp, better to be at peace than to act like a violent wild animal. As an individual, you may find optimism in religion, nature, human companionship, or even technology. Wherever you find it, remember its value: Courage is among the most important of all human emotions. Having good beliefs such as optimism, faith, and a sense of meaning and control is closely related to personal well-being. You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, through for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. However, when God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While you were still sinners, Christ died for you, and since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, and how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

The Cost of Satification are the College Blues

The defense called sublimations is defined as working off frustrated desires through socially acceptable activities. Are you read to be poured out as an offering? Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering, on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. It is one thing to follow God’s way of service, if you are regarded as a hero, but quite another thing if the road marked out for you by God requires becoming a doormat under other people’s feet. Are you ready to be sacrificed like that? Are you willing to give and be poured out until you are used up and exhausted—not seeking to be ministered to, but minster? I am already being poured out as a drink offering. Are you ready to be poured out as an offering? It is an act of your will, not your emotions. Tell God you are ready to be offered as a sacrifice for Him. Then accept the consequences as they come, without any complaints, in spite of what God may send your way. Tell God you are ready to be poured out as an offering, and God will prove Himself to be all you ever dreamed He would be. Some believe that art, music, dance, poetry, scientific investigation, and other creative activities can serve to rechannel sexual energies into productive behavior. Actually, almost any strong desire can be sublimated. For instance, a very aggressive person may find social acceptance as a professional soldier, boxer, or football player. Greed may be refined into a successful business career. Lying could be sublimated into storytelling, creative writing, or politics.

Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your people. For your sake, Oh, Lord, look with favor on your desolate sanctuary. Give ear, Oh God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name, Sacramento. We do not make request of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. Oh, Lord, listen! Oh, Lord, forgive! Oh Lord, hear and act! For your sake, oh my God, do not delay, because you r city of Sacramento and your people bear your Name. Sexual motives appear to be especially prone to sublimation. Psychiatrists have a field day with such pastimes, as surfing, motorcycle riding, drag racing, and dancing to or playing Aaliyah’s music, to name a few. People enjoy each of these activities for a multitude of reasons, but it is hard to overlook the rich symbolism apparent in each. Those who shew contempt, even though they are the most contemptible, always seems on the higher ground; dislike is always associated with contempt. Contempt may be said to be its own object; none so despicable as those who despise others. Those who eat from the king’s provisions will try to destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall in battle. The two kings, with their hearts bent on evil, will sit at the same table and life to each other, but to no avail, because an end will still come at the appointed time. The king of the North will return to his own country with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the sacred covenant. He will take action against it and then return to his own country. At the appointed time he will invade the South again, but this time the outcome will be different from what it was before.

Ships of the western coastlands will oppose him, and he will lose heart. Then he will turn back and vent his fury against the holy covenant. He will return and show favor to those who forsake the holy covenant. His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation. With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist him. Those who are wise will instruct many though for a time they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered. When they fall, they will receive a little help, and many who are not sincere will join them. Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined, purified and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time. What would happen if a person’s defenses failed or if the person appraised a threatening situation as hopeless? Bruno Bettelheim (1960), who survived the Nazi concentration camps, described a reaction he called give-up-it is. Many prisoners felt so helpless that they displayed a zombie-like detachment and became walking corpses. Randolph Harris has described a similar reaction in Vietnam prisoner of war camps. Randolph Harris reported the case of a young marine, who had adapted unusually well to the stresses of being Prisoner of War (POW). His health was related to a promise made by his captors: If he cooperated, they reported that he would be released on a certain date.

As the date approaches, his spirits soared. Then came a devastating blow. He had been deceived. His captors had no intention of ever releasing him. He immediately lapsed into a deep depression, refused to eat or drink, and died shortly thereafter. Those seem like extreme examples. Does anything similar occur outside of concentration camps? Apparently, so. For example, researchers in Finland recently found that even in everyday life people who feel hopeless die at elevated rates. The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against God of gods. He will show no reguard for the gods of his father or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all. Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end. Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand. From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up here, there will be 1,290 days. Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days. As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance. When the laugh is raised upon a great man, he never fails to dwindle into contempt. How can we explain such patterns?

Psychologists have focused on the concept of learned helplessness. Learned helplessness is an acquired inability to overcome obstacles and avoid aversive stimuli. To observe learned helplessness, let us see what happens when animals are tested in a shuttle box. If places in one side of a divided box, dogs will quickly learn to leap to the other side to escape an electric shock. If they are given a warning before the shock occurs (for example, a light that dims), most dogs learn to avoid the shock by leaping the barrier before the shock arrives. This is true of most dogs, but not those who have learned to feel helpless. How are dogs made to feel helpless?
He who is content with less gets nothing. Moralists who declaim so copiously on the duty of contentment betray an ignorance of human nature. No situation, however, splendid, in which one is compelled to remain fixed and stationary, can long afford pleasure. The minds of these simple savages, unoccupied by matters of graver moment, were capable of deriving the utmost delight from circumstances which would have passed unnoticed in more intelligent communities. Discontent increases with the increase of information.

Before being tested in the shuttle box, a dog can be placed in a harness (from which the dog cannot escape). The dog is then given several painful shocks. When placed in the shuttle box, dogs pretreated this way react to the first shock by crouching, howling, and whining. None of them try to escape. They are helplessly resigned themselves to their fate. After all, they have already learned that there is nothing they can do about the shock. As the shuttle box experiments suggest, helplessness is a psychological state that occurs when events appear to be uncontrollable. Helplessness also afflicts humans. It is a common reaction to repeated failure and to unpredictable or unavoidable punishment. A prime example is college students who feel helpless about their schoolwork. Such students tend to procrastinate and give up easily. Beautiful credit! The foundation of modern society. Who shall say that this is not the golden age of mutual trust, of unlimited reliance upon human promises? Credit cards were the symbols of wealth. Attributions have a large effect on helplessness. Persons who are made to feel helpless, in one situation, are more likely to act helpless in other situations because they attribute their failure to lasting, general factors. All the moral rules God gave his people in the Old Testament are called law. Because of his sinful nature of all people, this highly coveted law of God could not produce righteousness. So Jesus gives a right standing with God as a gift to his people. Law can refer to all the practical instruction God still wants his people to obey. This law helps people show their love for God. It tells them how to live together peacefully. Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you, so that you may take the cloak and respect and honor with you and act like you are of God, not man.

You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor’s house or land, his manservant or maidservant, his food, his care, or anything that belongs to your neighbor is off limits to you!
There are the commandments the LORD proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountains from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets. Nothing in this World is probable, unless it appeals to our trumpery experience; and we only believe in a romance when we see it in a newspaper. If I conclude I must be stupid, after failing to solve a series of puzzles, you may feel helpless when you try to solve other problems. In contrast, attributing failure to specific factors in the original situation (I am not too good at puzzles, or I was not really interested) tends to prevent learned helplessness from spreading. We look for visions from Heaven and for Earthshaking events to see God’s power. Even the fact that we are dejected is proof that we do this. Yet we never realize that all the time God is at work, in our everyday events, and in the people around us. If we will only obey and do the task that He has places closet to us, we will see Him. One of the most amazing revelations of God comes to us when we learn that. It is in the everyday things of life that we realize the magnificent deity of Jesus Christ. May the God of peace, Himself, sanctify you completely.

Daniel’s Vision of a Ram and a Goat and Lender of Last Restort

Discontent increases with the increase of information. The minds of these savages, unoccupied by matters of graver moment, were capable of deriving the utmost delight from circumstances which would have passed unnoticed in more intelligent communities. An economy’s production depends on its natural resources, including its land, minerals, and weather. A discovery of new mineral deposit shifts the long-run aggregate supply curve to the right. A change in weather patterns that make farming more difficult shits the long-run aggregate-supply curve to the left. In many countries, important natural resources are imported. A change in the availability of these resources can also shift the aggregate-supply curve. Events occurring in the World oil market have historically been an important source of shifts in aggregate supply for the United States of America and other oil-importing nations. Right now oil prices are at their lowest point since 2009, some people are finding 89 octane gasoline, for an average of $2.48 a gallon, which is really helping because prices of everything are at an all-time high. It is poor consolation to think that one might be worse offHowever, California is facing a new gas tax, which will range be about $.12 a gallon, raising the total gas tax to $.75 a gallon. However, prices are not expected to top $3.00. Some in the media are trying to mislead you and hype the satiation and make you run out and buy gas to cause a supply shock, that will spike prices and generate more money for investors. So be sure to use conservation efforts and keep gas prices low. In this case, financial instruments serve primarily as a means of speculation rather than hedging, and should not influence behavior.

However, a simple common-sense principle guides this distinction. Imagine this, an oil producers faces the risk that oil prices will fall, while a consumer faces the risk that oil prices will rise. The producer and the consumer might use a futures construct to hedge this risk by conducting a transaction today, expecting, in the future, prices will be higher, thereby effectively purchasing insurance against the potential risk they might face higher prices in the future. However, consumer still worries about the price of fuel because it is a substances most people use weekly, and higher prices will interfere with everyone’s daily commute, while the produce reaps the benefit of increased revenue, from an artificially created supply shock, by speculation. The increasing feul prices will increase the unpredictability of prices in the overall economy. Nonetheless, it would be premature to conclude that the United States of American no longer needs to worry about oil prices.

Moralists who declaim so copiously on the duty of contentment betray an ignorance of human nature. No situation, however splendid, in which one is compelled to remain fixed and stationary, can long afford pleasure. In Shanghai, China, during a New Year’s celebration, 35 students were killed in a stampede, at a block party, when coupons, which looked like money came falling from the third floor. In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of Heaven churning up the great sea. Four great beasts, each different from, the others, came up out of the sea. While I was thinking about then horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth that spoke boastfully. As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him.  Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened. Then I continue to watch because of the boastful word the horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire. (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.) In my vison at night I looked, and there before me was like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven.

He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. I approached one of those standing there and asked him the true meaning of it all.
So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things: compensatory reactions are defenses against feelings of inferiority. A person who has a defect or weakness (real or imagined) may go to unusual lengths to overcome the weakness or to compensate for it by excelling in other areas. The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the Earth. However, the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever. Oh, great Lord, you are awesome, God, and you keep your covenant of love with all of those who love and obey your commands.

A Man Who Was the Bully of Humanity

That most contemptible of all human beings, a social bully, usually does nothing, when matters come to a crisis. Even when he fights, he fights bunglingly, and innocently.  Threating situations are often accompanied by unpleasant emotions called anxiety. A person who is anxious feels tense, uneasy, apprehensive, worried, and vulnerable. This can lead to the emotion-focused coping that is defensive in nature. Since anxiety is unpleasant and uncomfortable, we are usually motivated to avoid it. Psychological defense mechanisms allow us to reduce anxiety caused by stressful situations or our shortcomings. What are defense mechanisms, and how do they reduce anxiety? You can always recognize who has been through the fires of sorrow and received himself, and you know that you can go to him in your moment of trouble and find that he has plenty of time for you. However, if a person has not been through the fires of sorrow, he is apt to be contemptuous, having no respect or time for you, only turning you away. If you receive yourself in the fires of sorrow, God will make you nourishment for other people. Sometimes, to make us fear, and, even, for a short space, to hate, is productive of the contrary extreme. A defense mechanism is any process used to avoid, deny, or distort sources of threat or anxiety. Defense mechanisms also help protect an idealized self-image so that we can comfortably live with ourselves.

Often, defense mechanisms create large blind spots in awareness. For instance, I know an extremely stingy person, who is completely unaware that he is a tightwad. Everyone has at one time or another used defense mechanisms. Day after day, and almost every day, one meets censure which is felt to be unjust;–but the general result of all this injustice is increased efficiency. Nothing fatigues the body so much as weariness of spirit. This is your hour, and the power of darkness. Not being reconciled to the fact of sin—not recognizing it and refusing to deal with it—produces all the disasters in life. In your human relationships and friend ships, have you reconciled yourself to the fact of sin? If not, just around the next corner you will find yourself trapped and you will compromise with it. However, if you reconcile yourself to the fact of sin, you will realize the danger immediately. The inexorable law of human souls, that we prepare ourselves for sudden deeds by the reiterated choice of good and evil, which will gradually determine character. One of the most basic defenses is denial (protecting oneself from an unpleasant reality by refusing to accept it or believe it). And as they followed, they were afraid. The discipline of dismay is an essential lesion that a disciple must learn. The danger is that we tend to look back on our times of obedience and on our past sacrifices to God in an effort to keep our enthusiasm for Him strong.

However, when the darkness of dismay comes, endure until it is over, because out of it will come the ability to follow Jesus truly, which brings inexpressibly wonderful joy. Fire maketh the gold shine and the straw to smother. We differ from ourselves, just as we differ from each other. Sometimes patients have tremendous difficulty recalling shocking or traumatic events from childhood or adulthood. It seems that powerful forces were holding these painful memories from awareness. This is known as repressions. Some people protect themselves by repressing threatening thoughts and impulses. Feelings of hostility toward a family member, the names of the people we dislike, and past failures are common targets of repression. This tremendous conflict of opening manhood, which is our life here what, is the landing of a soul to the life to come. All mankind is to be plagued by its contrary. Everybody liked better to conjecture how the thing was, than simply to know it; for conjecture soon became more confident then knowledge, and had a more liberal allowance for the incompatible. He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who cherishes understanding prospers. A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will perish.

Signs of the Times

Darkness is more eligible than light to those whose deeds are evil. Many people have normal and loving family and friends, but others are experiencing conflict with their family and friends. It seems that their loved ones bring them nothing but lies, stress and hardship, even if you are kind and loving and forgiving to them.  This is a sign of the times, and it is discussed in the Bible. Fortitude stamps upon those who possess it an unfading lustre. In the case of role strain, there are contradictory expectations and demands attached to a single role, which is quite common in everyday life. When a person cannot fulfill the roles of one status without violating another, role conflict occurs. It has been prophesied that father will be against son, and son against father, mother against daughter, and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law. Sin has a habit of persisting and is remorseless in its choice of vehicles.  People usually try to fulfill their roles as they understand them, but role performances also are influenced by the fact that multiple roles are attached to almost every status.

The parent role, for example includes all of the patterned expectations of all people with whom the parent interacts. The role set of a parent included rights and duties toward spouse, children, family, friends, employers and many others in reciprocal roles. Relationships are about exchange. There is usually a profit motive—people seek to maximize rewards and minimize cost. Social exchange is based on the norm of reciprocity—that we help not harm those who have helped us. This norm established the expectation that gifts, recognition, love, and other favors will be returned. In the course of a day, people exchange smiles, waves, and other simple courtesies. Exchanges of this kind are most often taken for granted—at least until people fail to meet our expectations. The norm of reciprocity, of course, has a negative side, which includes the expectation that hostilities, threats, social slights, and other acts meant to harm will be reciprocated. People, groups, organizations, and nations keep a running account of what they are owed and what they owe others. Top priority is given to exchange relationships with business partners, political allies, friends, kin, or lovers who provide the greatest benefits at the lowest cost. Because people have an interest in searching for the most favorable cost-benefit ratios in their dealings with others, relationships are forever shifting. Nevertheless, exchanges and ties of mutual obligations are a vital social glue.

One man’s courage is not another’s. Your courage is skin deep. Cooperation is a pattern of interaction in which individuals, groups, and societies work together to achieve shared goals. Cooperation is fundamental to human survival; without it social life would be impossible. Cooperation sustains routine, face-to-face encounters. It is also necessary if people are to have loving relationships, raise children, protect themselves, and make a living. Good senses will shew you the power of self-conquest, and point out its means. Competition is much like cooperation, in that both individuals and groups strive to achieve a shared goal. It differs from cooperation, however, in that in competition, instead of joining with others to achieve valued goals, people or groups contest for them, recognizing that society’s prizes are in limited supply and only one group or person can attain them. Competitive relationships are especially common to capitalist economies and pervade almost all aspects of people’s lives. More sin is the only anodyne for sin, and the only way to cure the ache of conscience is to harden it. The pangs of conscience, so much vaunted by some, do most certainly drive ten deeper into sin where they bring one back to virtue. Conflict is a pattern of interaction in which people or groups struggles to achieve a commonly prized object or goal. Conflict is especially common when competitors violate rules and seek to gain their objective by any means available. There is no group or relationship, however, small and intimate, in which conflict does not occasionally occur. We most often consider conflict to be opposed to human interest, harmful to the social order, and something to be avoided or resolved as quickly as possible.

Strong wind, earthquake-shock, and fire may pass by: but I shall follow the guiding of that still small voice which interprets the dictates of conscience. When people or groups are compelled to interact with each other, coercion is the glue that binds them together. Coercion is the actualization of the threat of force that those with power sometimes use to achieve their objectives. The relative strength of coercion as a cohesive force lies not so much in blatant expressions of power and authority as in the myriad expressions it may assume in everyday life. Ridicule, gossip, the silent treatment, and withdrawal of affection are but a handful of coercive devices people use in their daily interactions with others. Coercion involves an individual or group that dominates another, the superordinate, and a person or group that is dominated, the subordinate. There cannot be one without the other, the behavior of one is conditioned by the other. The founders of a new colony, whatever Utopia of human virtue and happiness they might originally project, have invariably recognized it among their earliest practical necessities to allot a portion of the virgin soil as a cemetery, and another portion as the site of a prison. Our Lord took Himself the sin of the World, through identification with us, not through sympathy for us. He deliberately took on His shoulders, and endured in His own body, the complete, cumulative sin of the human race. Jesus Christ reconciled the human race, putting it back to where God designed it to be. And now anyone can experience that reconciliation, being brought into oneness with God. If your child say he hates you and he has always been nice and caring, it is a sign you are doing something wrong and ruining your relationship.

2 Kings 2.19: They are Afraid

Good sees the deepest dissembled thoughts, nay sees the thoughts before they are thought. God is just to exercise his might, and mighty to perform his justice. None should take life but him who gives it. God is good security of all the debts of the poor. There is no cause but one why one man’s nose is longer than another’s, but because that God pleases to have it so. The unlovely may work against us, but God sends us men when we want them. God has always been to me not so much like a father, as like a dear and tender mother, he turneth the shadow of death into morning. How much kinder is God to us than we are willing to be to ourselves! In 1760, John Michell, a British engineer and seismology pioneer, reported that Earthquakes and their resultant energy were produced by shifting masses of rock miles below the surface. The planet has seven major tectonic plates, which correspond with the seven continents, and about a dozen smaller ones; upon these tectonic plates sit all the continents and oceans. The plates represent a barrier between the Earth’s solid surface and its liquid core. Their various fault lines separate them from one another. Along these lines there are constant motions, so there are Earthquakes all day long, but many of them cannot be felt by humans. This is moderate, but highly consequential activity: During the past three million years, movement along the San Andreas Fault, on the California coast, which demarcates border between the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate, has shifted at a rate of approximately two inches a year (about the same pace it takes for a finger nail to grow).

How can we argue about God’s power in the other stars from the laws which he has given for our rule in this one? This Summer, 24 August 2014, at 3.20am, Napa, California USA was hit by a magnitude 6.0 Earthquake, on the Richter scale. Scientist are now using Napa as a laboratory because the closest, previously mapped fault was farther away, and was considered by state officials to be too old to be active, as the last time it ruptured was more than 11,000 years ago. When the fault ruptures—when plates crash or pull apart, when the Earth’s crust is broken—energy moves in waves throughout the planet, and we feel the outcome on the surface. However, inactive faults can awaken.  Even if there are not clues, faults can exist. And Evidence of recent movement can be washed away, or, as in the case of this section of Napa Valley, buried deep underneath soil deposits eroding from the mountains. Scientists had their suspicions that a fault could be buried in this area of Napa, but held back from mapping it because there was not enough evidence. Earthquakes are measured by the Richter scale, which was developed in 1935 by Charles Richter of the California Institute of Technology. It registers Earthquakes from micro (2.0 or lower) to massive (8.0 or higher). The largest ever recorded was the Chilean Earthquake of the 1960, a 9.5 magnitude on the Richter scale, which caused a phenomenon known as the free oscillation of the Earth. Seismic waves traveled around the planet for days after the initial shock. Scientists often have limited access to dig trenches and study possible faults, in areas filled with homes, that were built decades ago.

The Napa Earthquake woke several small previously unrecognized Napa Valley faults. The Earthquake tore up to the surface, producing a 9-mile-long scar that sliced through vineyards, asphalt and even homes, as the magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale was the largest Earthquake to shake Northern California, in 25 years, injuring more than 170 people, killing 1 woman, who died from brain bleeding caused by a falling television. There were also 800 homes damaged, 103 were deemed too dangerous to enter. Most of the damage was centered on the West Napa Fault. The  U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) found that the West Napa Fault moved a total of 18 inches (46 centimeters) along a 9.3 miles long (15 kilometers) length, and the estimated damage is anywhere from $362 million to $1 billion. While these newly found faults let off the region’s pent-up strain, an Earthquake with 30 times more energy is expected to hit the region in the future. The Napa Earthquake on 24 August 2014, marked the first time, since the 1971 Sylmar Earthquake, that a temblor in California has caused surface rupture in a residential area. “We are going to be taking a really hard look now, everyone should always be aware of where all of these faults are when they’re building. However, we can’t go around just doing it on a gut feeling. We draw the lines with the best information that we have available,” reports state geologist John Parrish. As of December 2014, more than 160 buildings, in Napa California, were still red-tagged, or severely damaged, and more than 1,640 yellow-tagged, or moderately damaged. The city has issued about 980 earthquake repair permits, with many homeowners still waiting to see whether they can get some federal help for the repairs. At least people in Napa have someone to help, other victims of Napa are not so lucky.

In 1906, San Francisco, had a population of 400,000, and was the largest American city on the West Coast. On Wednesday, 18 April 2014, the San Andreas Fault began to rupture at 5.13am, , the 7.9 magnitude Earthquake, on the Richter scale  damaged electoral wires, and overturned candles and coal stoves, which sparked huge fires, as dozens of fires merged into one. In a desperate move, the city’s 585 firefighters were helpless in the face of the conflagration, and the underground water mains had been destroyed, so they decided that houses, like the Hopkin’s Mansion, which were standing in the path of the blaze, would be destroyed by cannon fire and explosives, creating a firebreak 175 feet wide. Many beautiful mansions were lost, but huge sections of the city were saved by the unfortunate act, and it took four full days to extinguish all the fires. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of refugees fled the city by rail. With the New King’s basketball arena being built in Sacramento, any wonder why the city tore down perfectly good buildings, and historic buildings for this project, as the infrastructure is not adequate, and if there was a disaster, and rush hour traffic, it is possible that police, firefighters, nor emergency services will be able to respond.  Look our Lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive. The city of Sacramento is already in debt $2 billion, the new arena has no parking, and after it is all paid for will have a grand total of $1 billion more debt for the city and investors (taxpayers) to pay off.  And they know what happened once could happen again.

Surely the absurdity of all the doctrines of religion, and the iniquity of man, are sufficiently evident. To fear a being on account of his power is degrading; to fear him if he be good, ridiculous. How can we argue about God’s power in the other stars, from the laws, which he has given for our rule in this one? Agree with your adversary quickly. Do it quickly—bring yourself to judgment now. In moral and spiritual matters, you must act immediately. God is determined to have His child as pure, clean, and white as freshly snowed powder, and as long as there is disobedience, He will allow His Spirit to use whatever process it may take to bring us to obedience. The fact that we insist on proving that we are right is almost always a clear indication that we have repoint of disobedience. This is what the LORD says, “Bring me a new bowl and put salt in it. I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.” And the water has remained wholesome to this day.

The Purest Expression

The gifts of God are to be enjoyed, when the Giver is remembered. To prevent disease and promote well-being, health psychologists first try to remove behavioral risk factors. All the medicine in the World may not be enough to restore health, without changes in behavior. We all know someone, who has had a heart attack, or lung disease, who cannot or will not change the habits that led to their illness. Health-promoting behaviors include such obvious practices as getting regular exercise, controlling smoking and alcohol use, maintaining a balanced diet, getting good medical care, and managing stress. For example, here is how stress may harm you and cause illness. There is a Drug Enforcement Agent (DEA), called Princess, and she claims that the DEA sent her to Colombia, on an undercover assignment, in 1995; despite the fact that her life was in danger, and she had been receiving death threats and her identity had been exposed. During the investigation, Princess was kidnapped by a Colombian guerrilla group and taken to an unknown location. While being held captive, Princess’s captors tied a noose around her neck, for days, and locked her in a small room with a dirt floor, and a bed made of dried grass.

Princess was tortured and held for three and a half months. Soon after, Princess started having serious health problems. She was diagnosed by her doctors with multiple sclerosis, which medical experts said was caused by stressed related to her capture. The woman was awarded $1.1 million to cover her medical care for 25 years. Basic health practices should extend a person’s life. The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the Earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the East is from the West, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are made in his image. This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because people acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice in their hearts, and with ancient hostility sought to destroy Judah, I am about to stretch out my hand against these people, and I will cut off them off and destroy those who remain. I will carry out great vengeance on them and punish them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I take vengeance on them. Darkness is more eligible than light to those whose deeds are bad.
