A Note on Obscenity—Studies of Savages and the Sex in Studio 54

On the most admired stages of the World, it is astonishing that it should still be necessary to justify obscenity. Right now, in every big city, tens of thousands of yesterday’s and today’s school drop-outs are keeping body and soul together by some form of hustling. Hustling, in this since, means to obtain goods and services by forceful action or persuasion. And hustlers inevitably move into more and more, and worse and worse, illegality and immorality. Full-time hustlers never can relax to appraise what they are doing and where they are bound. As is the case in any jungle, hustler’s every waking hour is lived with both the practical and the subconscious knowledge that if he or she ever relaxes, if he or she ever slows down, the other hungry, restless foxes, ferrets, wolves, and vultures out there with him or her will not hesitate to make one their prey. Hustlers usually rob people by gun point, but now that electronic technology exists, they are able to hack into databases and obtain your private information including credit card numbers, social security numbers, bank statements, and medical record, so they may even call you on the phone and try to persuade you to make a payment on a debt you never created and read by your private information, to make it seem legitimate, and they may even threaten financial and legal penalties. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 7

For what we may still term morals, since it has now become an individual outcome, will not be entirely the same for all individuals. Some hustlers may even actively use the system to try to kidnap high profile people, kids of celebrities and politicians, and virtually hold them captive in their own houses, until they are able to abduct them. Between jobs, hustlers stay high on narcotics to keep from getting nervous. Over they move from place to place, never staying in one location for too long so no one, including the law could catch up with them. Many hustlers actually wear nice suits and work in newsrooms, the mayor’s office, or they may even be members of the city council. Any experienced hustler will tell you that when you get greedy is the quickest road to prison. Hustlers keep “cased” in their head vulnerable places, people, and situations they can perform their next job on when the bankroll  in their pockets begins to get low. Living by their wits, hustlers abuse every faculty that they can just like beasts. All our moralities, indeed, cannot fail to be modifications of a common pattern because we all belong to the same community; but the differences involve a greater degree of mutual understanding and forbearance than when uniform taboos were imposed from outside. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 7

It would seem that for many years there can be no common emotional or intellectual background which may be taken for granted; and if in the result not a little of a man’s power must be spent in creating his own scheme of values, still there is no immediate remedy, for it is in the nature of contemporary thinking that it demands an effort as an individual as it must be unsparingly honest if it is to have any meaning for our generation. So if the people of the old generation now leaving the World are often shocked to see swept away the old rigid taboos they were brought up in, they may leave it in peace. Life, after all, may not have been so hard for them, not so hard, perhaps, as for the younger generation, also, may continue to carry lightly its burden, on youthful shoulders, joyfully creating a new World. The wayfarer in the toilsome path of human life sees, with each returning Sun, some new obstacle to surmount, some new height to be attained. Distances stretch out before him, which, last night, were scarcely taken into account, and the light which gilds all nature with its cheerful beams, seems but to shine upon the weary obstacles that yet lie strewn between him and the grave. Life is full of cares and anxieties; man has occasion for, and a right to make use of, many expedients to make it pass on with tolerable ease. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 7

Obscenity is a permanent element of human social life and corresponds to a deep need of the human mind, or, for all we know to the contrary, of mind generally. Things have grown so tight in Sacramento, California USA that some of these hustlers have been forced to go to work. Even some prostitutes have gotten jobs in office buildings. Many of the jobs these hustlers have gotten would be considered impossible. However, you know they are all connection to someone with political power to get these prestigious jobs and still engage in organized crime. However, it is not confined to any nation or any stage of culture, low or high, savage or civilized. The obscenity definitely exists and is recognized among the peoples we often call “primitive,” and it is joyfully manifested by the greatest men and women of genius among all races. If we realize this fundamental permanence of obscenity we are relieved not merely from an ambiguous intellectual problem, but from a troublesome more task, all the more annoying since, as experience has shown, it is labour in vain. Intellectual discrimination and moral tact remain necessary, but our efforts are no longer bound to be futile when we understand that it is our primary task to revalue obscenity. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 7

Such a task has ceased to be meaningless when we remember that we have already gone far in a corresponding task: the revaluation of sex with which obscenity has so largely been associated or confused. A madam I had come to know—introduced me to a special facet of the night Word. It was the World where, behind locked doors, men and women catered to monied people’s weird sexual tastes. Rich men, middle-aged and beyond, men well past their prime: these were not college boys, these were their Ivy League fathers. Even grandfathers, I guess. I hardly ever knew their identities, but I recognized a few people’s names I happened to hear. Society leaders. Big politicians. Tycoons. Important friends from out of town. City government big shots. All kinds of professional people. Star performing artists. Theatrical and Hollywood celebrities. And, of course, racketeers. Sacramento was their sin-den, their flesh pot They stole off among the middle class, and took off whatever antiseptic, important, dignified masks they wore in their elite World. These were men and women who could afford to spend large amounts of money for two, three, or four hours indulging their strange appetites. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 7

In the realm of the sexual life one is sure to meet with exceptional difficulties which are at present really unsolvable, if one wishes to draw a sharp line between the mere variations within physiological limits and morbid symptoms. Anything they could name, anything they could imagine, anything they could describe, they could do, or could have done to them, just as long as they paid. The quality of the new sexual aim in some of these perversions is such as to require special consideration. Some of the perversions are so remote in content from the normal that we cannot help calling them “morbid.” This is especially true of those in which the sexual instinct, in overcoming the resistances (shame, loathing, fear, and pain), has brought about surprising results (eyes stared at the big black hole, the faces fell slack and the mouths sagged open, licking of feces and violation of cadavers). That girl greased her big Amazon body all over to look until it had a luminous sheen and looked blacker. Her buttocks flexed and swung rhythmically. Her eyes fluttered open, she looked around the room through the prism of light, her eyes resting briefly on each object, touching his body to orient herself with him. She used small, plaited whips, she would draw blood, and she was making herself a small fortune off these old black and white men. Some people liked to cringe on their knees and beg and cry out for mercy under a girl’s whip. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 7

Some of them would pay extra to have people watch them being beaten, as she placed one foot solidly on a chair, in between his thighs. She compared her body to a honey bowl and said that her honey was deep and hot. He curled his toes and moaned, as her breast shook like big balloons in the delta breeze. Then she looked right at me with her glistening crotch, inhaling deeply, as if to draw in my scent, smiling at me, she seemed lost in a dream. I was too light she told me that nearly every white woman in her clientele would  specify “a black one”; sometimes they would say a “real one” meaning black, no brown or golden complexion men. The Lesbian thought up her messenger service idea become of some trade wanted dark black men to come to their homes, at times, carefully arranged by telephone. These women lived in neighborhoods of swanky brownstones, Victorians, and exclusive apartment houses, with doormen dressed like admirals. Doormen would telephone up and hear, “Oh, yes, send him right up, James”; service elevators would speed those neatly dressed black messenger boys right up so that they could “deliver” what had been ordered by some of the most privileged men and women in the city. I would not tell all the things I have seen. And so many of these men held responsible positions; they exercised guidance, influence, and authority over others. Yet, even in these cases, one cannot feel certain of regularly finding among the perpetrators of such acts persons of pronounced abnormalities or insane mind. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 7

The Crime of Loving is when that Love Leads to the Injury of Others

Life, as we live it today, is more highly socialized, more urbanized, more—so far as external relationships are concerned—standardized than it used to be. The Word has become uncomfortably small; we have not yet gained a complete control of our excessive procreational activity; so that there are far too many humans, and being so closely crowded together, we have to adopt all sorts of new precautions to avoid friction and permit of the greatest amount of mutual freedom available within our unduly narrow frontiers. So many of the old traditional social taboos having become antiquated or no longer adequate, there has been a furious activity in making new laws and regulations, without a due recognition of the fact that old taboos can only be replaced by new taboos, and that mere legal enactments, enforced, or left unenforced, by paid officials or the police, to be effective must themselves become taboos, printed on the fleshly tablets of the individual citizen’s heart.  #RyanPhillippe 1 of 11

Most psychologist agree that if people are not mentally mature by the age of 50, they will never mature. And speaking of taboos, I learned my lesson about doing things I am not supposed to, even if it is just simply an unspoken rule. I am very inquisitive, and I was in the mansion and knew I was not supposed to go above the second floors, but the elders were in the other room occupied with a conversation about a beam that needed to be replaced. I took this as an opportunity to go beyond my boundaries. I went into rooms that were really cool, but had been shut off. As I opened the door to one of the rooms, there was distressed gold lincrusta Walton wall coverings, etched with a flower vine type of design. The Cherubim chandelier, encrusted with crystal turned on and began to spin around and illuminate the room, it was as it the angel was alive and the lights reflected onto the gold wall paper and it was beautiful. I picked up my camera and started recording, but it was hard to keep a steady hand because I was so nervous. #RyanPhillippe2 of 11

As I walked further into the mansion, I was surprised that the elders did not hear me and reprehend me for going beyond the imposed barriers. The floors started to creek, but I was so enchanted that I kept going higher and higher in the mansion and capturing as many beautiful picture as I could. The mansion was seven stories tall, and it was supposedly built in 1885, but some of these places were so archaic, it seems that they were 5,000 years old and I loved that about them because they were not inexpensive, but had been hand crafted and built by people before we had all of these machines, and as you can imagine, a few people died and were seriously injured in the building process, so these mansions had souls. The higher I climbed, the weaker the floors became, but not like they were going to give away, but more like taffy, but I was so curious as to why the upper floors and certain rooms in the house had been closed off. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 11

Although it was daytime, the higher I got in the mansion, the more nervous I became because the floor became more emotional. The creaked and moaned like they were alive, it was a sound I never heard in my life and as I kept walking the more frequently and intense the creaking become, but I have to keep going. The wood banister and gold walls were amazing, the sunlight was filtered and hazy as it beamed through the large windows covered by sheers, the close I got to the seven floor, the more nervous I got, as the mansion seemed to be coming alive. The floors kept moaning, as if they were feeding off of me, and my knees started to buckle, the floors felt completely like walking on taffy and the souls of my feet hurt. Then I must have blacked out. However, I woke up in my bed, at 5am, and the lamp was on. I did not remember going to bed, and I always turned the lamp off before I went to sleep because I am sensitive to the light. I was all alone in the mansion and there was not a sound to be heard. I think the house eats people, and is a nexus of energy. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 11

It was an interesting place; I could go seasons without seeing my dad. And it was like my mother would make a rare cameo once or twice a year. Sometimes you would see people in the house and I was not sure if they were supposed to be there, if they were contractors, or if they were hunters. No matter, I felt comfortable around some of them, and while others seemed nice, I kept my distance because you never know. Sometimes I would see people in rooms they were not supposed to be in and they would wave at me, then I would never see them again. Once we had family members from out of town over, and they had a six-month old son. I went a month without seeing them, and I asked what happened to them, then I saw them later that night, and their son was now five. It was quiet as kept, but everyone knew there was something unusual about the house, and they would not say anything, but would give me looks or subtle ques to let me know something was going on. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 11

Personally, I think the mansion had other realms within it. And there would be other people in there all the time, but you may not see them because it was so large, and it possibly distorted time, but no one said a word because they did not believe their eyes either. It was like the place could read your thoughts and would project what you focused on. Of course, there were practical jokers, who tried to make it seem like the mansion was haunted, which it was, but we could always detect the difference from a prank and the mansion manifesting things. Because it was so large and had such a bizarre reputation, it attacked a lot of envy, mentally unstable people, and some of the kindest souls you would ever imagine. Nonetheless, everyone seemed kind of stand offish, and conversations were fleeting. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 11

And the sex was absolutely prohibited. The sex taboos are at the centre of this process, not only because it so happens that the sex is a sphere in which change has of late taken place with unusual rapidity, but because the sex is at once, an extremely important region—so that it become a training ground for the social activities generally—and yet a region in which most of the essentials do not lend themselves to direct external control, and so its taboos must be both made and maintained, at all events in the first place, privately. And in a house that could sallow you a live and moaned and creaked like this, I knew this was a very spiritual house. During recent years, a half of this truth, the more destructive half has become widely realized. Real love and truth are stronger in the end than any deviance or misfortune. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 11

It is realized, that is to say, that many of the family and other social restrictions which were once inculcated on youth are outgrown and no longer to correspond of to the facts of the modern situation. I suspect that God was on Earth. A lot of people had started acting mentally unwell, and some thought it was the water or the heat. However, I watched my parents and they behaved normally. So after years of contemplation, I think the people who are having anal coitus, and the sex other for procreation had slowly been driven sane. Because you would see people come to the house, and after about a year, they started acting like they were drunk off dumby juice and everyone could see they were behaving bizarre, but them. They house slowly drove entire families insane. The discovery was made with enthusiasm by many who jumped to the conclusion that a go-as-you-please policy—a naïve obedience to the crude and uninformed impulse of the moment—was henceforth right and justifiable. #RyanPhillippe 8 of 11

Reflecting on the Victorian respectability, by taking the common form of sensuality, has often too exchanged the features of the present for the features of the past it has bartered the Puritanical repression of the sex (Netflix and Chill) for another form of repression, just as full of hatred and contempt as the Puritanic, but effected by the deadening influence of promiscuous indulgences. It seldom takes long, however, for those who follow this line of conduct to find where it inevitably leads. They have failed to see that in throwing away the antiquated worn-out taboos, they had still retained the license that those taboos assumed. The taboos, having largely become merely external restraints, had the function of keeping within the bounds an impulsive licence which was always tending to break those bounds, and demanded, perhaps rightly, and occasional orgy. #RyanPhillippe 9 of 11

The two, on the whole, balanced each other and were necessary to each other; the external taboo was functionless without the licence, and the licence was mischievous without the taboo. The man who loves, and loves truly, should not long permit its object to remain in any doubt of his feelings and intentions. The mind of a lover moves in a circle, or at least on a more circular course than other minds, some of which at times even seem to move almost in a straight line. I actually talked to a few men, who are heterosexual and homosexual and they admit that they do not like intercourse and refuse to engage in the process. The gay man said that the “thought of anal sex fills me with fear and is a serious turn-off.” He goes on to say that he loves intimacy, but fears that his preference is a deal-breaker and does not know if he should overcome his phobia or not? #RyanPhillippe 10 of 11

He has to understand that he does not have a phobia, but a preference, and he is perfectly entitled not to have intercourse. It was recommended that he recognizes predators—and never allows himself to be coerced into something he does not enjoy. Real love can only arise where there is either a void in the heart, occasioned by the falsehood or indifference of once favoruite object, or where love before has never been admitted. In wars the sorer the fight is, the greater is the glory of the victory; and the harder a person is to be won, the sweeter is their love when it is obtained. Fire in straw will not be hidden, and the flames of affection will burst forth at length, though it be long kept under. Life under the former conditions was certainly a discipline, but a discipline mainly imposed from without, whence the rebellion against it as soon as its prohibitions were found to be dead. #RyanPhillippe 11 of 11

Ships Fitted for Rough Weather are those Built and Stored for a Long Voyage

A recordplayer maintained the right, soft music, the atmosphere, plus the food, made the place. There is a principle in the human mind destine to be eternally at dealing with improvement and science.  The youthful heart belongs to you—a youngster, for you are in possession of all—mirth, sorrow, lightheartedness and somberness. Make the best of youth and applaud for your burgeon vitality. We cannot wait for the charity of nature; we must ask for it—that is our mission. The most welcomed people are those who have confident, hopeful, brave, and happy eagerness for knowledge. And be ready for the future; never are those who recall the hardships, sadness, failure, and frustration of the past successful. When I had been around long enough to show signs of permanence, inevitably everyone thought of my astonishing potentiality. I believed my power and youth and told myself everything was up to me. Readiness requires persistence, perseverance, and austerity. There is no one who does not reap what has been sown, and one can succeed only by firmness and concentration, after overcoming hardships and unproductivity. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

I always loved waking up before dawn, the dark hours were my favorite, early in the morning before the Sun rose. I felt like the World was mine. Everyone else was busy sleeping, and it was so peaceful. I enjoyed this time of day. This was a time when I could escape the realities of life, forget about those annoying people stirring about to cause trouble. Free to do what I pleased, upon impulse. We live in a World beset on all sides with mysteries and riddles—and so this is no matter—else it seems strange, that Nature, who makes everything so well to answer its destination, and seldom or never errs, unless for pastime, in giving such forms and aptitudes to whatever passes through its hands, that whether it designs for the plough, the caravan, the cart—or whatever other creature Nature modeled, be it but an ass’s foal, you are sure to have the thing you wanted; and yet at the same time should so eternally bungle it as Nature does, in making so simple a thing as a committed man. I really enjoy peace and wish that people could be good to each other and find what they loved, that did not cause harm to others. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

The World has long ago settled that morality and virtue are what bring men peace at the last. Unfortunately, though we are all of a mind about the main opinion that virtue is what tends to happiness, and vice what ends in sorrow, we are not so unanimous about details—that is to say as to whether any given course, such, we will, as smoking, has a tendency to happiness or the reverse. Is there any human character that is always consistently good? One reads of them sometimes in books. In the worst books you could possibly read—the only really immoral books written in our time. Why are they immoral? For this plain reason, that they deliberately pervert the truth. A good friend is enough to me and I will hold the same attitude to the World. When I enjoy success, you always make perfection still more perfect. When I meet difficulty, you provide timely help to me, you are my friend, indeed, like a brother. Expediency is the root of all morality. It is stupid to be unmoral, and that is the long and short of it. People seem to forget there is a God and that they will be punished for their sins. When your lives start to unravel, you will know exactly why and remember what you did. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

There are times when, the elements being in unusual commotion, those who are bent on daring enterprises, or agitated by great thoughts, whether good or deviant, feel a mysterious sympathy with the tumult of nature, and are roused into corresponding violence. The lifeless symmetry of architecture no man would be so mad as to put in competition with the animated charms of nature. Every greeting conveys the feelings of gratitude from your heart. Let these words carry all my gratitude from my heart, which resembled a stone, but is in blossom under your care. What I can do now is to report to you that I have learned how to repay you inculcation. The most valuable thing is youth in one’s life. Let our youth hold splendid the rising Sun emitting bright rays in the sea of our life. All hours and all seasons are alike to the genuine lover of nature. Nature has given to every man enough of frailty to enable him to estimate the workings of selfishness and corruption, but its truly privileged are those who can shroud their motives and intension in a degree of justice and disinterestedness, which surpass calculation of the designing.  #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

The head and the heart are at variance, but when nature pleads, the voice of reason is feeble. At any time, and under any circumstances of human interest, is it not strange to see how little real hold the objects of the natural World can gain on our hearts and minds? What you have given me is a beautiful reminiscence and what you have impressed in my mind is purity and love. You are like a short poem or a serenade from which waft an elegant rhythm and tender musical notes, which bring about health and mirth to me. Could you know from afar the feelings of someone jilted? Distance is melancholically beautiful, so I have left you for a better memory. I have collected all the past dates into a book of verse waiting for your autograph. The learned compute that seven hundred and seven millions of millions of vibrations have penetrated the eyes before the eyes can distinguish the tints of a violet. What philosophy can calculate the vibrations of the heart before it can distinguish the colors of love? The course of true love never does run smooth. May it not be because when there are no obstacles, there are no tests to the truth? Ships fitted for rough weather are those built and stored for a long voyage. The Sin of Prohibited Correspondence in Studio 54!

To do what is forbidden always has it charms, because we have an indistinct apprehension of something arbitrary and tyrannical in the prohibition. Giver her two drinks and she would tell you her life story in a minute. She was the daughter of a dark, businessman looking West Indian. Their methods were indirect. What I was learning was the hustling society’s first rule; that you never trusted anyone outside of your own close-mouthed circle, and that you selected with time and care before you made any intimates even among these. I saw people on their long, wild spending sprees, after they made big hits. I do not mean just hustlers who always had some money. I mean ordinary working people, the kind that we almost never saw at Studio 54, who, with a good enough hit, had quit their jobs working somewhere downtown for a capitalist. Often they had bought a BMW, Cadillac, or Mercedes-Benz, and sometimes for three or four days, they were setting up drinks and buying steaks and shakes for all their friends. I would have to pull two tables together into one, and they would be throwing me forty and fifty dollar times each time I came with my tray. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 14

Some of these guys were making $9,000.00 to $130,000.00 in a day on the New York Stock Exchange and famous hits like that had brought controlling interest in lots of New York’s bars and restaurants, or even brought some of them out right. The cops looked on; no runner lasted long who did not, out of his pocket, put a free “figger” (figure, meaning monetary donation in this reference) for his workings in area’s foot cops, and it was generally known that the numbers bankers paid off at high levels to the police department. Evangelists, who on Sunday’s Peddled Jesus, and mystics, would pray a lucky stock for you for a fee. Some of the ablest New York’s hustlers took a liking to me, and people like Steven Rubell, Ian Schrager, and Mark Fleischman began in a paternal way to straighten me out. When I came to work the next afternoon, one of the bartenders handed me a package. In it was an expensive, dark blue suit, conservatively cut. The gift was thoughtful, and the message was clear. The bartenders let me know that this customer was one of the top executives of the Roundabout Theatre Company. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 14

Gene Feist and Elizabeth Owens loved classic Broadway plays and musicals. They liked the staff well-dressed so they would blend in with Manhattan’s elite. There were always plainclothes detectives around who were quietly identified to me by a nod, a wink. Knowing the law people in the area was elementary for them, and in time I would learn to sense the presence of any police types. The nightclubs patronized were geared to entertain and jive the night crowd to get their money. The other bartenders would let me know which among the regular customers were mostly “fronts,” and which really has something going; which were really in the underworld, with downtown police or political connections; which really handled some money, and which were making it from day to day; which were the real gamblers, ad which had just hit a little luck; and which ones never to run afoul of in any way. The latter were extremely well known about Manhattan, and they were feared and respected. It was known that if upset, they would break your head open and think nothing of it. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 14

These were the old-timers, not to be confused with the various hotheaded, wild, young hustlers out trying to make a name for themselves for being crazy with a pistol trigger or a knife. The old heads that I am talking about were such as Steven Rubell, my Self Shane O’Shea, Disco Dottie (Aunt Dot), Romeo, Julie Black, Anita Randazzo, and Greg Randazzo. Most of us had worked as strongarm when gangster had awakened to the fortunes being made in what they had previously considered the black market (a racial term). Some used to “persuade” people with lead pipes, wet cement, baseball bats, brass knuckles, fist, feet, and tire irons, and worked for some of the biggest bankers. There seemed to be an understanding, we never clashed with the police. The light-skin black dude with the perm (European American) and a Cadillac was the World’s most unlikely pimp. He had a string of the about a dozen of the stringiest, scrawniest, black and white street prostitutes in New York. We used to tease Cadillac because his women were so skinny, it looked like he did not make enough to feed them. He would roar with laughter right along with us; I can hear him now, “You got damn right mutha fucker, skinny bitches work harder!.” #RyanPhillippe 4 of 14

They are about as beautiful as any prostitutes who operated anywhere, I would like to imagine. Cadillac would pick out prostitutes by watching their facial expressions in dance halls. He was a cool and collected expert in his business, and his business was women. Someone once tried to steal one of his women and the theft ended up with his finger joints knotted and gnarled so that it made people uncomfortable to look at them. I have thought about it, and what it really meant to work at Studio 54. In one sense, we were huddled in there, bonded together in seeking security and warmth and comfort from each other, and we did not know it. All of us—who might have become a doctor and cured cancer, or an architect and built industries, or s successful banker—were, instead, victims of the capitalistic American social system. To the wolves who still were able to catch some rabbits, it had meaning that an old wolf who had lost his fangs was still eating. Jimmy Jumpsteady like to sit on the curb at 2am in the morning, pretending to smoke a cigarette, but he was really casing the houses, and watching people come and go. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 14

Jimmy Jumsteady was known as a cat-man thief, regularly exposing himself as one of the most popular people in Midtown. He was called Jimmy Jumpsteady because, it was reported, that he would jump from roof to roof and was so steady that he maneuvered along window ledges, leaning, balancing, edging with his toes. If he fell, he would have been dead, or walking with a walker. He got into apartments through windows. It was reported that he was so cool that he had stolen even with people in the next room. I later found out that Jimmy Jumpsteady always keyed himself up high on dope when he worked. Instead of money, he gave promises. The first apartment I got was mostly a cat house, full of women. You could walk into one or another room in this house and get a hot fur coat, a good camera, fine perfume, a gun anything from hot women to hot cars, even hot ice. I was one of the very few males in this apartment house. In several of the apartments, the women tenants were prostitutes, some were in some other racket or hustle—boosters, number runners or dope-peddlers. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 14

It always does seem to me that I am doing more work than I should do. It is not that I object to work, mind you; I like work; it fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours. I love to keep it by me; the idea of getting rid of it nearly breaks my heart. The fire-boys mounted to the hall and flooded it with enough water to annihilate forty times as much fire as there was there; for a village fire company does not often get a chance to show off, and so when it does get a chance it makes the most of it. Such citizens of that village as were of thoughtful and judicious temperament did not insure against fire; they insured against the fire company. A good night cannot go to the grave with more satisfaction than when falling and dying in his vocation. Profit brings honor, and is, indeed, the most substantial support of it. Straightforward dealings do not bring profit—it is the sly and the underhand that get on in these times; When godliness is gain, I believe in serving ourselves as well as others. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 14

Everyone who lived in the house used dope, you can smell it outside, in the hallways, and in the individual units. This should not reflect too badly on that particular building, because almost everyone in the city needed some kind of hustle to survive, and needed to stay high in some way to forget what they had to do to survive. It was in this house that I learned more about women that I ever did in any other single place. It was these working prostitutes who schooled me to things that every wife and every husband should know. Later on, it was chiefly the women who were not prostitutes who taught me to be very distrustful of most women; there seemed to be a higher code of ethics and sisterliness among those prostitutes than among numerous ladies of the church who have more men for kicks than the prostitutes have for pay. They would lay up with other men, giving away their husband’s money. And many women just faked as mothers and wives, while playing the field as hard as prostitutes—with their husband’s children right there in New York. #RyanPhillippe 8 of 14

I was young, working in the bar, not bothering with these women. Probably I touched their kid-brother instincts, something like that. Some would drop into my apartment when they were not busy, and we would listen to some music and talk. It generally would be after their morning rush—but let me tell you about the Gold Rush! Seeing the hallways, elevators, and stairs busy any hour of the night with white and black men coming and going was no more than one would expect when one lived in a building out of which prostitutes were working. However, what astonished me was the full-house crowd that rushed in between, say, six and seven-thirty in the morning, then rushed away, and by about nice, I would be the only man in the house. It was husbands—who had left home in time to stop by this apartment house before they went on to work. Of course, not the same ones every day, but always enough of them to make up the Gold Rush. And it included white men who had comes in cabs. #RyanPhillippe 9 of 14

Domineering, complaining, demanding wives who had just about psychologically castrated their husbands were responsible for the early Gold Rush. These wives were so disagreeable and had made their men so tense that they were robbed of the satisfaction of being men. (Someone them even used to sneak to the gay clubs at night and dress up like their wives.) To escape this tension and the chance of being ridiculed by his own wife, each of these men had gotten up early and come to a prostitute. The prostitutes had to make it their business to be students of men. They said that after most men passed their virile twenties, they went to bed mainly to satisfy their egos, and because a lot of women do not understand it that way, they damage and wreck a man’s ego. No matter how little virility a man has to offer, prostitutes make him feel for a time that he is the greatest man in the World. That is why these prostitutes had that morning rush of business. If women realized that the greatest urge of a man is to be men, they could keep their humans. #RyanPhillippe 10 of 14

Most men, the prostitutes felt, were too easy to push around. Every day these prostitutes heard their clients complaining that they never anything but griping from women who were being taken care of and given everything. The prostitutes said that most men needed to know what the pimps knew. A woman should occasionally be babied enough to show her the man had affection, but beyond that should be treated firmly. These tough women said that it worked with them. All women, by nature, are fragile and delicate: they are attracted to the male in whom they see strength. Prostitution is typically thought of in terms of women selling sexual services to a man, although transactions between two males are also common. Payment for a man’s service to a woman is less usual. Nude dancers, phone and Internet sex workers, and X-rated video performers are also part of the sex industry. Relationships that exchange sex for money also occur outside of prostitution. Advertising frequently portrays the “trade goods for sex” theme, and the TV specials “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” highlighted the prostitution-like aspects sometimes present in common relationships.  Women trade sex for men’s financial resources in numerous ways. A case could be made that a woman who married a good provider instead of her heartthrob, the wife who is especially sexually pleasing before asking for extra money from her husband, or the woman who wants out of her marriage but stays for economic security all play out the dynamics of prostitution. #RyanPhillippe 11 of 14

Economic incentive is usually the primary motivation for becoming a prostitute. Some go into prostitution as a matter of free personal choice or the right of sexual liberation, others are pressured because of dire economic conditions of the lack of remunerative alternatives, and yet others are forced through deception, violence or debt bondage. Some prostitutes work on a part-time basis and otherwise pursue conventional school, work, or social lifestyles. Prostitutes have exceedingly diverse life histories, aspiration, and present life conditions. People who work as prostitutes on a temporary, part-time basis and have other occupational skills can more easily leave prostitution. The full-time prostitute, who is alienated from traditional values and have identified herself or himself as part of the subculture (being arrested facilitates this identification), typically has little education and few marketable skills. These people usually find it very difficult to become successfully independent of prostitution. Legal problems, health hazards, and fear of personal injury are serious concerns of prostitutes. The price of doing traditional sex work for strippers, nude dancers, and prostitutes is diminished person health and safety. #RyanPhillippe 12 of 14

Male prostitution is as old as female prostitution. Evidence exist that men sold sexual services to other men as far back as the 8th century BC. In our era, there is no a “typical” male prostitute in terms of cultural, socioeconomic, or personal background. Young men ranging from illiterates to middle class to wealth work on the streets, in clubs, or through high-class escort services. Most male prostitutes do not have a pimp and work independently. Men who provide sexual services for women in exchange for gifts are called gigolos. Male prostitutes who cater to homosexual men called hustlers, call boys, kept boys, or peer-delinquent prostitutes. Hustler make contact with customers on the streets, inn gay bars or bath houses, or in public parks or toilets. Most hustlers come from chaotic family backgrounds and live in social milieu of drug abuse and unstable personal relationships. One study found that male street hustlers lack knowledge about sexually transmitted disease and do not take adequate precautions. One hustler said, “I always look them over, if they look clean like me, then they are all right.” #RyanPhillippe 13 of 14

Male sex workers are increasingly operating through escort agencies, advertising, and the Internet.  Peer-delinquent often work in small groups and use homosexual prostitution as a vehicle for assault and robbery. Most Peer-delinquent prostitutes are between the ages of 14 and 17 years old. Their usual modus operandi is for one or more of them to solicit a customer who is willing to pay to perform fellatio on them; they then rob then and physically assault them. Peer-delinquent prostitutes often define their contacts with clients as a demonstration of their masculinity and heterosexuality to their peers. However, beneath this façade many have strong homosexual feelings. All prostitutes, male and female, have a higher risk of contracting and transmitting deadly diseases. This one male prostitute, I could hardly move without falling over him. Every time I saw him, he had his mouth wide open, “Hey, Shane—who have we got here?” They would make a big deal over my sons. My oldest son could not stand him and used to call him Jim Crow. He even wore a wild zoot suit, used a heavy grease in his hair to make it look like a conk (perm), and he wore the knob-toed shoes, the long, swinging chain—everything. Jim Crow, as my son called him would not be seen with any woman, but this blonde midget, in fact, they lived in the same little apartment. I never was sure how they worked that one out, but I had my idea. #RyanPhillippe 14 of 14

That is Little Boy Blue!

Man does not speak by words alone. There he was, looking like a fly in buttermilk among colleagues—and he was trying to eat me up. We cannot lose sight of the fact that persons who otherwise behave normally sometimes have insane minds and are sometimes recorded as sick in the realm of sexual life, where they are dominated by the most unbridled of all instincts. On the other hand, a manifest abnormality in other relations of life will always show an undercurrent of abnormal sexual behavior. In the majority of cases, we are able to find the morbid character of the perversion not in the content of the new sexual aim, but in its relation to the normal. It is morbid if the perversion does not appear beside the normal (sexual aim and sexual object), where favorable circumstances promote it and unfavorable impede the normal. The exclusiveness and fixation of the perversion justifies us in considering it a morbid symptom. However, I tell you without a question, the most gruesome sexual diatribes that I have ever heard give us a hint that the carnal instinct itself may not be something simple, that it may, on the contrary, be composed of many components, some of which detach themselves to form perversion. It may be a fusion, which has lost its expression in the uniform normal behavior.

The energy of the sexual instinct does not merely contribute to the forces supporting the morbid manifestations (symptoms), but I advisedly maintain that this contribution supplies the only constant and most important source of energy in the neurosis. The problems in the sexual life of so-called psychoneurotic (a person suffering from hysteria, obsession, and surely also dementia praecox and paranoia) is that they develop a series of emotionally accentuated psychic processes, wishes, and desires, towards an individual, and the person with the symptoms may strive for expression, and the hysterical character shows a fragment of sexual repression, which reaches beyond the normal limits. It is an exaggeration of the resistance against the sexual instinct, it is an instinctive flight from intellectual occupation with the sexual object, the consequence of which in pronounced cases is a complete sexual ignorance. This feature, so characteristic of hysteria, is not seldom concealed in crude observation, they person with the symptoms of hysteria may develop an enormous sexual craving for an individual to the point that they create effigies, constantly referencing the person they desire, and constantly making sexual innuendoes to the point everyone can see there is something abnormal going on.

Usually this sort enigma of hysteria and immense sexual desire for an individual will lead to a very exaggerated sexual rejection from the person who is the object of affection. They may express the find the person suffering from the hysteria extremely disgusting and may feel uncomfortable in the presence of such a lustful beast. The provocation of the disease in hysterically predisposed persons is brought about by the pressure of the craving and the opposition of the sexual rejection, which transforms the libidinal strivings into symptoms. It is becomes exceptionally more of a banal emotional disturbance when the person suffering from hysteria focuses on an individual who shows no sexual interest. Psychoanalysis will regularly show that it is the sexual components of the disease may cause the predator to become aggressive and violent towards their target. In some cases, it is possible that there is a cult of sexually repressed men, who are in denial about their sexuality, and find an object, usually a young man to exclusively or preponderantly focus on, and they represent the converted expression of impulses which in a broader sense might be designated as perverse if they could manifest themselves directly in phantasies and acts without deviating from consciousness. The symptoms are, therefore, practically formed at the cost of abnormal sexuality. The neurosis is, so to say, the negative of the perversion.

It rocked me like a tidal wave. Scenes from a depraved mind lashed through my life. This repressed homosexual cult was living like animals, thinking like animals. The awareness that their obsession with me was deep like a religion, and myself being stalked as prey in this rotting World. Greek history flickered in my head—specifically Caligula. The well-known fancies of perverts which under favorable conditions may be changed into actions, the delusional fears of paranoiacs which are in a hostile manner projected on others, and the unconscious fancies of hysterics which are discovered in their symptoms by psychoanalysis, agree to content in the minutest details. The sexual instinct of the psychoneurotic shows all the aberrations which we have studied as variations of the normal and as manifestations of morbid sexual life. In most neurotics we find without exception in the unconscious psychic life feelings of inversion and fixation of libido on person of the same gender. I have also read recently read about groups of young couples who get together, the husbands throw their house keys into a hat, then, blindfolded, the husbands draw out a key and spend the night with the wife that the house key matches. I have never heard of anything like that being done by poor, even poor who live in the worst ghettos and alleys and gutters.

Without a deep and searching discussion, it is impossible adequately to appreciate the significance of this factor for the formation of the picture of the disease; I can only asset that the unconscious tendency to inversion is never wanting, and renders the greatest service, especially in the explanation of male hysteria. A psychoneurosis very often associates itself with a manifestation inversion, in which the heterosexual feeling becomes subjected to complete repression. It is but just to psychoneurotics of sexual perversion has been discovered, not sufficiently valued, must markedly influence all theories of homosexuality. All the tendencies to anatomical transgression can be demonstrated in psychoneurotics in the unconscious, and as symptom-creators. Of special frequency and intensity are those to the mouth and the mucous membrane of the anus the role of genitals. This obsession becomes a mania for looking, exhibitionism, and the actively and passively formed impulses of cruelty. The transformation of love into hatred, of tenderness into hostility, is a characteristic of a large number of neurotic cases and apparently of all cases of paranoia, and takes place by means of the union of cruelty with libido. These people will tell you anything. Funny little stories about the bedroom differences they saw between white and black men. The perversities!

Every active perversion is here accompanied by its passive counterpart. He who in the unconscious is an exhibitionist is at the same time a voyeur, he who suffers from sadistic feelings as a result of repression will also show another reinforcement of the symptom from the source of masochistic tendencies. In a pronounced case of psychoneurosis we seldom find the development of one single perverted impulse; usually, there are many and regularly there are traces of all perversions. In the perversions which claim sexual significance for the oral cavity and the anal opening, the part played by the erogenous zones is quite obvious. In most psychoneurotics, the disease first appears after puberty following the demands of the normal sex life. Against these the repression above all directs itself. Or the disease comes on later, owing to the fact that the libido is unable to attain normal sexual gratification. In both cases the libido behaves like a stream, the principal bed of which is dammed; it fills the collateral roads which until now perhaps have been empty. Thus. The manifestly great (through to be sure negative) tendency to perversion in the psychoneurotics may be collaterally increased.

I got my first schooling about the cesspool morals of this city from the best possible source, the media. And then as I got deeper into my own life, I saw their morals with my own eyes. Some would drop into a room with a comfort woman when they were not busy, get a rub down, smoke some crack, and he guide him to the sick things he wanted. I thought I had never heard the whole range of perversities until I later become aware of a steerer taking perverted men what they wanted. Everyone in the house laughed about the little Italian fellow whom they called the “Steak ‘n Shake.” He came without fail every evening, from his little basement apartment; the joke was after what they did to him, he would not last a year . . . but they were always able to get money out of him. Like he did not have any human rights, whatsoever. The fact of the matter is that sexual repression as to be added as an inner factor to such external ones as restriction of freedom, inaccessibility to the normal sexual object, dangers of the normal sexual act, which cause the origin of perversions in individuals who might have otherwise remained normal. God’s wrathful judgment is close upon these deviant men stumbling and groping blindly in wickedness and perversion and spiritual darkness.

There is More Moral Science in Physical Science than People Realize

Moral truth, resting entirely upon the ascertained consequences of actions, supposes a process of observation and reasoning. It was like being on a battlefield—with intellectual and philosophical bullets. It was an exciting battle with ideas. I never need fear any man’s intellect who tries to defend or to justify their vain, token-integrated self-hatred, which is what they are really trying to escape. I have focused my every effort toward building my own business, and a decent house for myself. That is the only way one is every going to get respect. One thing no one else can every give you is self-respect! No person can become independent and recognized as a human being who is truly equal with other human beings until one has what they have, and until one is doing for himself what others are doing for themselves. People have to start self-correcting their own material, moral, and spiritual defects and deviance. We need to start programs in our own communities to end drunkenness, drug addiction, prostitution. As valuable members of the global community and Americans, we have to lift up our own sense of value. For any man of culture to accept the standard of his age is a form of the grossest immorality. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 6

Human rights! Respect as human beings! That is what America’s masses want. That is the true problem. People do not want to be shrunk from as though they are plague ridden. They do not want to be walled up in slums, in the ghettoes like animals. They want to live in an open, free society where they can walk with their heads up, like men, and women! Few of these hypocrites realize that many people today dislike and avoid spending any more time than they must around these self-exalted derelicts, and they are convinced that we want to sleep in bed with them—and that is a lie! My prime desire is not to bed one of you. I prefer the company of my own kind. Why, even these fancy, bourgeois—when they get back to the house from the fancy cocktail parties, what do they do but kick off their shoes and talk about those liberals they just left as if the liberals were dogs. And these liberals probably do the same. I am never around them in private—but the bourgeois know I am not lying. Faulty morals deservedly level all distinctions and bring down the rank and birth to the canaille. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 6

Raw, naked truth exchanged between people is what a whole lot more of is needed in this country—to clear the air of mirages, clichés and lies that this very atmosphere has been filled with. Oh, my young friends and fellow sinners! Beware of presuming to exercise your poor carnal reason. Oh, be morally tidy! Let your faith be as your stockings, and your stockings as your faith. Both ever spotless, and both ready to put on at a moment’s notice! In many communities, especially small communities, hypocrites have created a benevolent image of themselves as having so much “good-will toward our oppressed and underrepresented,” every time any someone starts letting the local derelicts know the truth—that the oppressed and unrepresented are sick of being hind-tit (the least valuable part), second-class, disfranchised, that that is when you hear, uttered so sadly, “Unfortunately now because of this, our Stuarts of good-will are starting to turn against you. It is so regrettable . . .progress was being made . . . but now our communications have broken down and your attacks are going to cause you to lose a friend!” #RyanPhillippe 3 of 6

Persons of little strictness in their own morals take it not into their heads to be very inquisitive after the morals of others. What are they talking about? There never was any communication.  Well, then, why is it that whenever I speak up, these hypocrites are caught up in surprise and even shock? This is the situation which has permitted combustion to slowly build up to the point where everyone knows what these sinners are doing, without them realizing it. The people belonging to the power structures in office know that I am describing what has been the true pattern of “communications” between these “Stuarts of good-will” and myself. It has been a pattern created by domineering, ego-ridden sinners. Its characteristic design permitted the sinners to feel “noble” about stealing from me, slandering me, and throwing crumbs back, instead of feeling guilty about their local community’s system of cruel exploitation. Rushing to throwing away their money in luxury hotels, swanky nightclubs, and big, fine, exclusive restaurants. Knowing they cannot afford it. Many of them are one installment payment away from disaster. What they look like somewhere downtown out to dine, grinning at some headwaiter who has more money than they do? #RyanPhillippe 4 of 6

However, I want to tell you something. This patter, this “system” that these sinners created, of teaching us to hide the truth from them being a façade of grinning, “yessir-bossing,” foot shuffling and head-scratching—that system has done them and their community more harm than an invading army would do to them. Why do I say this? Because all this has steadily helped these derelicts to build up, deep in their psyche, absolute conviction that they are “superior.” This is exactly the reason why whenever people hear anything about what they have done, these sinners are finding themselves in deeper and deeper trouble and peril. I am surprised they still show up to work and pretend they have not done anything wrong. Let us just face truth! Facts! Whether or not the hypocrites are about to face truth, and facts, about the true reasons for their troubles—that is what essentially will determine whether or not they will now survive. Because men without exception are more or less tainted with error, all pretensions to superior moral principles are laughed at as false and ridiculous. Immorality brings its punishment. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 6

We are all of us born in moral stupidity, taking the World as an udder to feed our supreme selves. Immorality implies some forethoughts. Recently, American Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte apologized for this behavior with three of his teammates, James Feigen Jack Conger, and Gunner Bentz, as they allegedly vandalized a fuel station bathroom in Rio de Janeiro, and urinated on the premises. The group initially said that there were pulled over in a taxi and robbed at gunpoint, but police deny that a robbery took place. It is nice that they apologized, but if the apology only came because the group faced a judicial review, and the media caught wind of the vandalism. It seems that only when bad behavior is publicly acknowledged in the media, or when the courts threaten punishment is the only time they people will apologize for their behavior, and that otherwise, they would keep lying and pretend that they did nothing wrong. There is almost a musical rhythm. Those bourgeois out draping big tablecloth-sized napkins over their knees and ordering quail under glass and stewed escargot—why, Americans do not even like snails! What they are doing is proving they are civilized. I had to do the same thing in China to show respect for another culture. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 6

The Case of Salmon and Mayonnaise

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness. The path to embracing other cultures has to traverse the imagination. A high need for closure hurts creativity. I am addicted to enlightening moments when I get to see a new meaning in something. However, it may be true that every technique of wit shows the tendency to economize in expression, but the relationship is not reversible. Indeed, we have not yet given consideration to one of the largest groups into which the techniques of wit may be divided. In this we perhaps been influenced by the low estimate in which this form of wit is held It embraces those jokes which are commonly called “puns.” These are generally counted as the lowest form of wit, perhaps because they are “cheapest” and can be formed with the least effort. They really make the least demands on the executive functions of the brain and can be formed with the least effort. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 10

Puns really make the least demand on the technique of expression just as the actual play on words makes the most. Where in the latter, bother meanings find expression in the identical word, and hence usually in a word used only once, in the pun it is enough if two words for both meanings resemble each other through some slight similarity in structure, in rhythmic consonance, in the community of several vowels, or in some other manner. The following examples illustrate these points: We are now fallen into that critical age where in censores liberorum are become censores librorum: Lectores, Lictores. Professor Cromwell says that Rome in exchanging her religion changed from Jupiter to Jew Peter. It is related that some students, wishingto play a trick on Agassiz, the great naturalist, constructed an insect made up of parts take from different bugs and sent it to him with the question, “What kind of a bug is this? His answer was “Humbug.” #RyanPhillippe 2 of 10

I have given much attention to this form of wit and insist upon making a sharp distinction between it and the “play on words.” A pun is a bad play on words, for it does not play with the word as a word, but merely as a sound. The play on words, however, transfers itself from the sound of the word into the word itself. There are persons who have the ability, when they are in a high-spirited mood, to reply with a pun for a long time to every sentence addressed to them. At a gather, someone spoke disparagingly of a certain film called “Popstar,” and wound up by saying, “It was so poor that the first act had to be rewritten.” “And now it is rerotten,” added the punster of the gathering.  What frustrated me was that the previous research in my field was not able to generalize to help with real complex problems. Think of features as common associations that include but go beyond an object’s functions—physical properties, like what occasion it is usually used for, the place it is usually used, whether it moves or not, and what energy is involved in its use. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 10

It is a “bath” joke treating of the dread which some are said to have for bathing. We demand no patent of nobility for our examples, not do we make inquiries about their origin. The only qualifications we require are that they should make us laugh and serve our theoretical interest. It is to be remarked that both these demands are satisfied best by jokes. Two guys meet near a bathing establishment. “Have you taken a bath?” asked one. “How is that?” replies the other. “Is one missing?” When one laughs very heartily about a joke, he is not in the best mood to investigate its technique. It is for this reason that some difficulties are experienced in delving into their analyses. That is a comic misunderstanding is the thought that comes to us. Yes, but how about the technique of this joke? Obviously, the technique lies in the double meaning of the word take. In the first case, it is the verb in its full meaning. It is, therefore, a case where the same word is take now in the “full” and now in the empty sense. And if we replace the expression “take a bath” by the simpler equivalent “bathed” the wit disappears. The answer is no longer fitting. The joke, therefore, lies in the expression “take a bath.” #RyanPhillippe 4 of 10

Once more, we shall resort to a joke in which, the essence is universally human, especially in this economy. In his distress, a needy man borrowed seven hundred and twenty-five dollars from a wealthy acquaintance. The same day, he was discovered by his creditor in restaurant eating a dish of salmon with mayonnaise. The creditor reproached him in these words: “You borrow money from me and then order salmon with mayonnaise. Is that what you needed the money for?” “I do not understand you,” responded the debtor, “when I have no money I cannot eat salmon with mayonnaise. When I have money, I must not eat it. Well then, when shall I ever eat salmon with mayonnaise?” Here, we no longer discover any double meaning. Even the repetition of the words “salmon with mayonnaise” cannot contain the technique of the witticism, as it is not the manifold application of the same material, but an actual, identical repetition required by context. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 10

What else worthy of notice can be said about the answer of the poor man? It may be supposed that the striking thing about it is its logical character, but, as a matter of fact, the answer is illogical. The debtor endeavors to justify himself for spending the borrowed on luxuries and asks, with some semblance of right, when he is to be allowed to eat salmon. However, this is not the correct answer. The creditor does not blame him for eating salmon on the day that he borrowed the money, but reminds him that in his condition, he has no right to think of such luxuries at all. The poor bon vivant disregards this only possible meaning of the reproach, centers his answers on another point and acts as if he did not understand the reproach. It is possible that the technique of this joke lies in this deviation of the answer from the senses of reproach? It does not depend upon words, but upon the mental trend, and to abrogate it we are not helped by substitution so long as the sense of the answer is adhered to. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 10

In adapting puzzle-solving insights to real-World challenges, most inventions are unlike toy insight problems in one key aspect. Inventors do not generally have in front of them all of the objections they need for a solution. With the whole World at their disposal, they have to sniff the right answer out of an overwhelming number of possibilities. The reduction is possible only when we change the mental trend and permit the gastronomist to answer directly to the reproach which he eluded in the conception of the joke. The reduced conception would then be: “What I like I cannot deny myself, and it is all the same to me where I get the money for it. Here you have my explanation as to why I happened to be eating salmon with mayonnaise today just after you loaned me some money.” However, that would not be witticism but a cynicism. Most poor people would only borrow money to maintain things they have and try to invest in things for their new business, like books and computer, with not many options left, possibly due to injury and bad reputation, they are trying something instead of just sitting there like a sloth. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 10

Unlike the case of “salmon and mayonnaise”, the problem with borrowing money to start a business, is it may never take off. And due to competition, people may slander you and oppress you. Some people have worked a decade just to make themselves more marketable, but when your competitors are desperate and harassing and physically attacking you, it can make it nearly impossible to move forward, and while some need a break, they work through the pain and keep going, and to them, a luxury meal might be McDonalds, a pizza, a hamburger, or a cake because every dime they spend has to be accounted for, and may already not be able to afford the lifestyle they are living, but the load helps pay for materials and WiFi and so forth. Being good people, after the terms are up, and the loan repayments come due, with interest, they will in good faith make payments, which will mean that they have to cut back on necessities if their business does not become a success or they are not able to generate more revenue, so it can be a stressful and depressing situation for young people who are trying to make it the best way they can. #RyanPhillippe 8 of 10

Some people get paid to clown around at work and make life harder on others, while the people they target often wonder where their next meal will come from. And each year the cost of living goes up. For example, the price of energy might double and the cost of food items might go up a few dollars per item. While these increases seem meager to people with high paying jobs and houses in the hills, for people with low incomes it can be crippling. It will be instructive to compare this joke with one which is closely allied to it in meaning. A man who was addicted to drink supported himself in a small city by private teaching. His vice gradually became known and he lost most of his pupils in consequence. A friend of his took it upon himself to admonish him. “Look here, you could have the best pupils in town if you would give up drinking. Why not do it?” “What are you talking about?” was the indignant reply. “I am teaching in order to be able to drink. Shall I give up drinking in order to get pupils?” #RyanPhillippe 9 of 10

This joke, too, carries the stamp of logic which we have noted in the case of “salmon with mayonnaise,” but it is no longer displacement-wit. The answer is a direct one. The cynicism, which is veiled there, is openly admitted here, “For me drink is the most important thing.” The technique of this witticism is really very poor and cannot explain its effect. It lies merely in the change in order of the same material, or to be more exact, in the reversal of the means-and-end relationship between drink and teaching or getting pupils. As I gave no greater emphasis in the reduction to this factor of the expression, the witticism is somewhat blurred; it may be expressed as follows: “What a senseless demand to make. For me, drink is the most important thing and not the pupils. Private teaching is only a means to more drink.” The wit is really dependent upon the expression. For my experience, people who do not face consequences will never care about what they do wrong, they understand what they are doing wrong, but know you will not punish them, so no matter what, you cannot reason with them, unless you have the power to punish them for their sins. However, Ryan Phillippe is a hero and here to save the day! #RyanPhillippe 10 of 10

The Shoes Men Walk in

I am interested in civilization, and peace is civilization’s only climate; you cannot have civilization and war at the same time. By going among primitive people, I have learned what civilization was not. The Western “love” concept, you take it apart, it really is lust. All of that Hollywood stuff! Like these women wanting me to pick them up and carry them across thresholds and some of them weigh more than you do. I do not know how many marriages break ups are caused by these movie and television-addicted women expecting some bouquets and kissing and hugging and being swept out like Cinderella for dinner and dancing—then getting mad when a poor, scraggly husband comes in tired and sweaty from working like a warrior all day, looking for some food. Love transcends just the physical appearance. Love is disposition, behavior, attitude, thoughts, likes, dislikes—these thing make a beautiful person, a beautiful partner for life. This is the beauty that never fades. You find in Western civilization, often times, that when a spouse’s physical beauty fails, they lose their attraction. However, we are supposed to look into the person, and teach our spouse to look into us. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

I mentioned, you remember, how in a big city, a sizable organization can remain practically unknown, unless something happens that bring it to the general public’s attention. I have learned that people were civilized to the extent that they did not make way, did not plug one another with arrows, did not tolerate male dominance in their society, and so on. I have tried to get something that over in these essays.  Only time will tell whether I am more successful at writing of life or living it. I feel it is more important to make a success of living then writing. The two do not always coincide. I want to record my experiences, or rather record what I have learned of them, but to do this truthfully and courageously one must first establish himself as a man. That is the most difficult task of all. All the races of human beings must be honored and recognized. Separation must end. Supremacy of a chosen few must end. It is long enough that for you to know that we the people are the dream of Earth; we are the Earth’s gift to the Universe. Listen to your own heart. If you learn that, you will know the wisdom of ages. Learn to speak your own words, and sing your own song, while you learn to allow others to enjoy the same state of being. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

I have tossed away safe jobs with wonderful prospects. So I must be, at heart a gambler. I do not lay poker or bet on horses, and I am trying to wean myself off the flutters on the Stock Exchange. These are minor forms of gambling compares with authorship. Nothing I have written has paid off yet, however. It is an interesting challenge and craftsmanship to command a World audience. We must learn to respect all life—respect the planet. It I all consciousness. It is all life. We are all related, just different expressions of divine intelligence. It is all in the song of the creation, and the song is made up of many notes. If you can no longer get u in the night to listen to the falling rain, or to listen to the sound of the owl outside your window with joy in your heart. If you can no longer enjoy the wind rustling through the grass of the warmth of the Sun upon your face, if there is no longer a song in your heart and a dream in your heart—you are going to need it. You must make the conscious decision to change your life. I am not talking about changing roles or using different words. If you do not love yourself enough to change, then you will not be able to come into alignment with the new frequencies. My prayer for you, is that you will wake up tomorrow and walk this Earth consciously. I pray that every movement you live will have purpose, that every work you speak has a meaning, and that every thought you have be a prayer of gratitude for being alive, knowing that you are the life of this planet.  #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

A proper contribution to the knowledge of the sexual instinct in persons who are at least related to the normal can be gained only from one source, and is accessible only by one definite path. There is only one way to obtain a thorough and unerring solution of problems in the sexual life of so-called psychoneurosis (hysteria, obsessions, the wrongly named neurasthenia, and surely also dementia praecox and paranoia), and that is by subjecting them to that cathartic or psychoanalytic investigation. These psychoneuroses, as far as my experience goes, are based on motive powers of the sexual instinct. I do not mean that the energy of the sexual instinct merely contributes to the forces supporting the morbid manifestations (symptoms), but I advisedly maintain that this contribution supplies the only constant and most important source in the neurosis. The sexual life of neurotics manifests itself either exclusively, preponderantly; or partially in these symptoms. The symptoms are the sexual activities of the patient. The proof for this assertion I have obtained from an increasing number of hysteric and other neurotics during a period of a decade. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

Psychoanalysis abrogates the symptoms of hysteria on the supposition that they are the substitutes—the transcriptions as it were—for a series of emotionally accentuated psychic processes, wishes, and desires, to which a path of discharge through the conscious psychic activities has been closed by a special process (repression). These mental formations which are restricted to the unconscious state, strive for expression; that is, for discharge, in conformity to their affective value, and find such in hysteria through a process of conversation into somatic phenomena—the hysterical symptoms. If, lege artis (according to the law of art), and with the assistance of a special technique, retrogressive transformation of the symptoms into the affectual and conscious thoughts can be effect, it then becomes possible to get the most accurate information about the nature and origin of these previously unconscious psychic formations. The hysterical character shows a fragment of sexual repression, which reaches beyond the normal limits because of shame and loathing. It is an instinctive flight from intellectual occupation with the sexual problem, the consequences of which in pronounced cases is a complete sexual ignorance, which is preserved until the age of sexual maturity is attained. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 5

Intimate Strangers

9My reading has my mind like steam under pressure, as I was totally unprepared for the physical impact on my emotions. I stared at the great man who had taken time out of his life and got to know me, but I was still a little bitter towards him, at times, because of somethings I did not understand and because I had these deviant gossip birds in my ear and constantly annoying me, and sometimes I started to suspect he was involved with them. He is the man who spent years of his life in suffering and sacrifice to lead me because he loved me so much. And then, hearing his voice, I sat leaning forward, riveted upon his words, he said that he was also deprived of a father’s love for his family, while he was defending himself from hypocrites and other enemies of God. The word of God will give life to you, and put you on the same level with all other civilized and independent nations and peoples on this planet Earth. Many people in this wilderness of North America have been brainwashed and are mentally, morally, and spiritually dead. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

vbnmMany people have been stripped of the King’s English and speak this smuggler language where things have different meanings, and “cooking some fish” might not actually mean putting a halibut in the oven for dinner. Humans have been robbed of their culture and are taught to worship products, and disrespect their families, until they do not know who they are. However, the teachings of true knowledge of ourselves will lift us up from the bottom of this capitalist society and place us where we began, at the top of civilization. The World is always on the side of prudence. Communities always establish a higher standard of justice and truth, than is exercised by their individual members. We commend the virtue we cannot imitate. Thus it is that those countries, in which public opinion has most influence, are always of the purest public practice. It follows that a representation should be as real as possible, for its tendency will be inevitably to elevate national morals. Miserable is the condition of that people whose maxims and measure of public policy are below the standard of its private integrity. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

Cov7DrkUAAEBQHLIn my effort to do honest work, I listen to anyone who I believe has knowledge, but it does not mean that I buy into their politics. I have learned some of the most amazing things from people, who many of you would stop listening to or ignore because of their religions or personal beliefs. However, many of you who consider yourself neutral do not have anything to convey besides sleazy gossip or slanderous accusations. It is really hard to find anyone who can captivate my imagination, and if I specially prize two sentences of Auguste Rodin, the nineteenth century French sculptor, it is because of the joy of intelligence which I see the Universe clearly by what he is saying, and his words re-creates by the illumination of the consciousness. Literature and Art are the most sublime mission of man, since it is the exercise of thought which seeks to understand the World and to make others understand it.  It seems to me you get into closer sympathy with people by writing about the realities of life for human beings, and interpreting, or trying to interpret, the depths of the human consciousness. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

bnmThe worst thing you can do is assume you know someone or their ideology and you have never spent time with them, nor have had a real conversation. All great movements are popular actions. They are the volcanic eruptions of human passions and emotions, stirred into activity by the ruthless Goddess of Distress or by the torch of the spoken word cast into the midst of the people. And although I show less interest in my father, I still find myself peering over my shoulder at times, wondering if he will drop on me again. By the skillful and sustained use of propaganda, one can make a people see even Heaven as hell or an extremely wretched life as paradise. I show less interest in my father because of the public’s envy and jealousy, and I do not look for him to save me, I am trying to do that myself. It is my desire to be independent and not depend on any man, nor express emotion because then no one can let me down. Do you know why these people hate me? It is because every time they see my face, they see a mirror of their crime—and their guilty conscience cannot bear to face it! They should actually fall to their knees and beg for my forgiveness. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

vbnm,There is no Heaven in the Sky, and no Hell is in the ground. Heaven is your home, where you live. And all of this religious propaganda about Heaven and Hell is simply taught to you so you will learn to accept dysfunction and deviance on Earth, but Earth is a very beautiful place and it is also meant to be peaceful. Too many people are only tricky, deceitful, untrustworthy flesh. I have seen too many men ruined, or at least tied down, or in some other way messed up by women. Even Ryan Phillippe, a  great actor, was destroyed by a slut from Stanford, who slept in arms.  I have talked to too many prostitutes and mistresses. They know more about husbands than the wives of the husbands did. The wives always fill their husbands’ ears so full of wife complaints that it is not the wives, it is the prostitutes and mistresses who hear the husbands’ innermost problems and secrets. They think of him, and comforted him and that included listening to him, and so he would tell them everything and that is why a whore is able to wreck a house. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 5

The Awakening from Heaven through the World

The soul’s life has seasons of its own; periods not found in any calendar, times that years and months will not scan. It caught me totally unprepared. It through me into a state of confusions. If you once believed in the truth, and now you are beginning to doubt the truth, you did not believe the truth in the first place. What could make you doubt the truth other than your weak self? Because right is right, and wrong is wrong. All of the influence that my brother had wielded over me was broken.  It is impossible to dream, or to see, or to have a vision of someone whom you never have seen before—and to see him exactly as he is. To see someone, and to see him exactly as he looks, is to have pre-vision. I am preparing for what my life is about to become. And you will not find anybody more time-conscious than I am. I live by my watch, keeping appointments. Even when I am using my car, I drive by my watch, not my speedometer. Time is more important than distance. Time is the pacifier of every woe, the qualifier of every disappointment. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

The restless mind creates and observes at the same time. Indeed, there is scarcely any popular tenet more erroneous than that which holds that when time is slow, life is dull. It is very often and very much the reverse. If we look back on those passages of our life which dwell most upon the memory, they are brief periods full of action and novel sensation. This was to be the year of commitment and we would be tested in many ways. We have to, by necessity, let go of things which do not strengthen our pathway and help us develop our character to the fullest potential. That which is unnecessary will not follow us to the year’s end. Many of us will completely change the direction our lives have been taking. Others will find that they will be compelled to wander as if directionless, to seek new places they would be moving to. I warn you that relationships will also see radical shifts as our true nature resonates to a higher vibration. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

You know, it is really sad that so much of what we truly are has been repressed within us. People cannot feel themselves any more. They do not know who they are any longer in the scheme of things. They have lost their way in life. Several people stumble around like they are drunk and are not connected to Earth. They just stagger around, bumping into each other. It has become an accidental Universe. Living only in the mind of man and not in the heart leads only to being mentally unwell, because the mind cannot feel. As a result, people lose their ability to feel themselves again. Mankind is only an ephemeral blossom on the tree of time. Penelope crossed the sea. No, she did not, but that is what I would have done if it were me. I would sail the Albatross in a White Squall to Malta to ask her why she keeps you in misery. Forget us all for wasting you, for being imperfect, for existing the way that we do. I could never be what you want, and I am the only one who will end up dying of a broken heart. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

I will never be what you want and I will end up dying of a broken heart. Because of death was not a broken heart, it was removal of the stolen part. This is our own Greek tragedy. We write our very own twisted ending. Perhaps, it is precisely that we must recognize the most prolific psychic participation for transformation of the sexual instinct. In these cases, a piece of psychic work has been accomplished in which, in spite of its gruesome success, the value of an idealization of the instinct cannot be disputed. The omnipotence of love nowhere perhaps shows itself stronger than in this one of her aberrations. The highest and lowest in sexuality are everywhere most intimately connected. (From Heaven through the World to Hell.) I had been looking at the exploitation that for the first time I really saw and understood. Now, I watched brothers entwining themselves in the economic clutches of the capitalistic system, bankers went home every night with another bag of the money drained out of the ghetto. The money, instead of helping the poor, was going to enrich these merchants, who usually lived in an exclusive area where a poor man had better not get caught unless he worked there for someone. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

The men were quietly, tastefully dressed. The women wore ankle-length gowns, no makeup, and elaborate hairstyles. The neat children were mannerly not only to the adults, but to other children as well. I have never dreamed of anything like that atmosphere among black people who had learned to be proud they were black, who had learned to love other black people and white instead of being jealous and suspicious. The men used both heads to grasp a brother’s both hands, voicing and smiling our happiness to meet him again. The sisters, both married and single, were given an honor and respect that I never seen any man give to their women, and it felt wonderful to me. The salutations which we all exchanged were warm, filled with mutual respect and dignity: “Brother” . . . “Sister”. . . “Ma’am” . . . “Sir.” Even the children speaking to other children used these terms. The opinion a man forms of his own prudence is measured by that of the company he keeps. If forethought consists in wishing well to one’s self, young hearts are as prudent as antiquated souls. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 5
