Ripped Pants and Big Plans—We did Not just Play Backgammon for 26 Hours!

US-flag-purchase-2The eternity of God, is the full and perfect possession of endless life always present in its entirety, and the aeviternity of the created Universe, without beginning or an end but existing in the ever-changing succession of time. Many have tried to solve the problem raised by God’s prevision of free human acts. God in eternity has a simultaneous vision of all temporal reality, and he sees free acts as free. The risks and disasters of medieval life and modern life are declarations that creatures form mentally separate from the substance of God. Philosophizing is the most excellent human activity, for philosophers alone are wise people of this World, and creation ex nihilo (out of nothing) is impossible, the World and the human species are eternal. The ultimate purpose of human life, is the philosophical contemplation of truth and virtuous living according to the norms of nature. Sin is an alien element in our blood. This is the Apple-Disease with which Nature has striven since Adam. To treat Youth as naturally sinful, is, therefore, false, and bad; as it is bad, and false, to esteem it radically pure. We must consider that we have forfeited Paradise, but were yet grown there. The philosopher alone lives rightly and achieves the ultimate end of human life.  #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

IMG_-ld3r1lYou do not take a break from truth love and eternal life is much more important than life is on this Earth. I do not want you to mess up eternal life for a man on this Earth. Christian faith but sought an ultimate reconciliation with life, and many philosophers never abandon their Christian faith. Philosophy, however, is the work of human reason investigating the natural causes and principles of the Universe, whereas the Christian religion rests on supernatural revelation and miracles of God. Because the teachings of faith have a higher source than those of philosophy, in cases of conflict the latter must always give way to the former. Human reason is fallible and often comes to only probable conclusions. Even when its conclusions seem necessary, if they are contrary to revealed doctrine they are not true. In these cases, truth is one the side of revelation and not on the side of reason. For example, the philosophical conclusion that the World is eternal must give way to the revealed truth that the World was created in time. If the World is eternal, it was never created because it always existed. Much like the conundrum, what came before God? Or how did God come to be. The human mind is liner time and there always has to be a begging and an end for people to be able to grasp the concept.  #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

Screenshot_2016-04-23-20-48-30Linear time is a concept where by time is seen sequentially, as a series of events that are leading toward something: beginning, and an end. In Newtonian theory, time is something absolute in reality, regardless of human perception.  When God made time, he made plenty of it, and some cultures view time differently. Many people think that humans control time. However, the cycle of life actually controls time and people and human activity, and because we are not in control of the World, nature, or time, we must live in harmony to do our best to prevent catastrophic events. Those tears which the innocent heart pours forth with the first actual discovery that sin in the World makes people Lords over those pleasures that intemperance enslaves them to. Time is precious and if you want your dreams to come true, you cannot waste it oversleeping. I know it feels good to stay in that soft warm bed and keep your eyes closed and not worry about the drama of daily life, but people are counting on your presence. People who view time in a linear fashion like to keep schedules and for people to be on time, so they can maximize the most of their days and lives. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

cgvhjkThe psychic is an experience individually organized and the physical as experience collectively organized. There is nothing more real than experience, but experience that is collective and stand is more real than that which is individual and transient. In this sense, the objective physical World is more real than the subjective psychic World. Intermediate in reality are space, time, and causality as organizing forms of the collective experience. We deal with organization, energy transfer, and equilibrium. Tensions develop—not within, but among, entities and processes—when a dynamic equilibrium is restored. Synthesis and harmony is more permanent and productive than opposition and conflict. In ethics and social philosophy, we distinguish between coercive norms (normy prinuzhdeniya) and expediency norms (normy tselesoobranosti). Time develops all of us one way of another. When hours are no longer possible, minutes become precious, and the more precious time is, the more valuable. Time might better be called sanctioning and instrumental norms.  #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

Screenshot_2016-04-23-20-54-05If you want X, you must do Y. The X that free humans will want is vaguely characterized as a maximum of life. The chronological ideal is a collective in integration of human life beyond both coercive obligation and functional specialization. Historically, ruling classes have been so successful because they are strategic organizers of production. The capitalist monopoly of managerial experience will be broken by abolishing private ownership of the means of production, but by disseminating managerial experience and knowledge among the noncapitalists. The redistribution of wealth makes no sense, it is like going home and everything you have worked for is gone from your house, while others who have not put in any effort get a portion of your earnings for just being alive. Time is the master of those who have no master. Time will be flexible for some cultures, schedules are less important than human feelings. When people and relationships demand attention or require nurture, time becomes a subjective commodity that can be manipulated or stretched.  Most people cannot afford a great relationship because they are not willing to invest the time that it takes.#RyanPhillippe 5 of 5

Dialogue of Seven Wise Men—We Will Not Play Nature to your Culture

They who never enter into public life cannot possibly have the same feeling as those who are fond of society; at least, we do not have many examples of their doing generous actions. Their purses are generally as contracted as their minds, and both, as it were, are confined to a corner. The mysteries of nature by his awareness of the abyss that separates the Creator from the World of creatures. Among my ancestor’s mystical experience, the seminal one occurred in 1600, when he glanced at a pewter dish that reflected the Sunlight and in a rapt state saw the Being of Beings, the Byss and the Abyss, the eternal generation of the Trinity, the origin and descent of this World, and of all the creatures through the Divine Wisdom. The Abyss is God considered as the Ungrund—the undifferentiated Absolute that is ineffable and neither light nor darkness, neither love nor wrath. The eternal generation of the Trinity occurs because the Ungrund contains a will to self-intuition. This will (identified with the Father) finds itself as the heart (the Son). Emanating from these is the moving life (the Spirit).  This eternal process toward self-knowledge and outgoing dynamic activity generates the inner spiritual World, which is the prototype of the visible Universe. With differentiation, conflict of wills becomes possible; and Satan, in serving himself from the heart, falls. Sometimes it seems that evil is necessary, others times evil seems to spoil the cosmic harmony. Some lives are blessed; it is God’s will: it is the attesting trace and lingering evidence of Eden. Other lives run from the first another course.

Other travelers encounter weather fitful and gusty, wild and variable—brave adverse winds, are belated and overtaken by the early closing of Winter nights.  The doctrine of the Trinity considers the theory of seven qualities or energies in nature; and the fluidity of these metaphysics results from different ways of coordinating these two main aspects of thoughts. The seven qualities divide into two triads, a higher and a lower, between which there is a crucial energy called the flash (Blitz). God winds you up, and you go till He stops you. Energy is perhaps of all qualities the most valuable. The lower triad is contractions (whereby substances become individuated), diffusion (where by things gravitate to one another), and rotation or oscillation (the tension produced by the interplay of the forces of contraction and diffusion). The higher triad is in effect the lower triad transformed: it is love, expression, and eternal nature of the Kingdom of God, through which there is achieved a harmony between the material and spiritual World. The soul is corporeal and is the form of the body, it seems to have been constructed for another sphere of existence. The soul separable from the body in life and at death. It possesses unity, and its function is to vivify the extended matter of the body. The powers of the soul, including sensation and appetite, are seen as modeled on the will: they act directly upon the body with no need of an intermediary. When my soul shall be separated from my body, will there exist less order or perfection in the creation? Angels, too, are material, and the human soul is inhabited not only by a good angel and a bad angel, but also by a large number of spirits, each in charge of a special gift.

The true peace of God begins at any spot a thousand miles from the nearest land. The meaning of this evolutionary scheme is that the Trinity considered in itself is merely formal or ideal. The abysmal will needs a real object to arouse self-knowledge. Thus, the Father differentiates himself through the first (lower) triad into material nature. An obstacle is thereby created to the abysmal will, which can be overcome, not by abolition, but only by transformation. The flash is the collision, as it were, between the absolute will and nature. Herein, the Spirit reveals in its light the higher triad, identifies with the Son as the incarnation of spirit in matter. This is the goal of the divine operation, whereby the opposition is overcome and made into harmony. There is no happiness like that of being loved by your fellow-creatures, and feeling that your presence is an addition to their comfort. When there is a belief in happiness, a new creed becomes yours. Psychologically, the flash reveals to humans their choices. One can remain at the level of anguish implicit in the welter of sensation represented by the oscillation of nature; or one can die unto self, and identify oneself with the abysmal will—which also has to negate itself in order to achieve victory. Thus, the mystical life is an imitation of Christ’s suffering and triumph. In the contemplation of beauty, the inherently corrupt soul could transform its love for the physical and material into a purely spiritual love of God. When the people around me were not only inexpressive, but preoccupied, I turned to my physical environment, taking on a new appreciation for the garden’s towering trees, midnight green grass, vibrant colourful flowers, and decorative bushes.

I noticed that the garden was bisected by a brick path, and the pattern of its rectangles reminded me of the charming architectural details in the brick walls of the elaborate houses in Wilmington, Delaware USA, which is near my parents’ house; the verticals and horizontals were also to be discovered in the ornate clapboard walls, the fences lining the peaceful houses, and the lattices in the enchanting gardens. In my newfound passion (no other word will do for the adore I felt) for something to love, I came to cherish the architecture, landscape, and the sweet smell of the air. This love welled up inside of me, igniting a desire that united me with my community and family and that feeling has occupied me ever since, tracing its source back to my childhood. If you do not find love in your heart or something delightful to focus on, you can think yourself crazy. However, I decided to use my mind, as I was taught by my teachers in school, to expand the World of art into a global village, a brave new World of art, in which my ways of seeing are almost limitless. This exposes the traditional nature and culture to a strategy that authorizes the intellectual domination of one’s environment. We can change identities as readily as we change our clothes, picking and choosing who we are from the images we have in our minds. One can learn to draw on personal experiences. Since God made the Earth, one could sense the majesty of His soul in His handiwork, much as one can sense their heart beating in their chest.  Winter leaves me a dream, although it is mysterious, it is sweet. When I open my eyes, I find a colourful spring ahead of me. Memories bring us the past years warmth and worries at departing time. I wish you have only warm things and have no more worries. Year by year, trials and hardships; day by day, Sunrise and Sunset—friendship is in our hearts. Pass through boundless years and list good memories. Remember me just like I remember you, now and then. I wish you a healthy and happy life and dream come true. I post my sincere blessing to you, my whispers of blessings are all around you. May happiness rain down on you. I wish you lobe and creditable life. Let us listen to the blessings of the Earth in this beautiful and warm World, and have a successful and promising new year.

That Love of the Earth which is Recognition of God

What are the comprehensible terrors of humans compares with the interlinked terrors and wonders of God!

That Love of the Earth which is Recognition of God

Nothing but vast wisdom and unlimited power should dare to sweep humans off in multitudes; for it is only the one that can know the necessity of the judgment; and what is there, short of the other, that can replace the creatures of the Lord? Long my it remain in this mixed World a point not easy of decision, which is the more beautiful of the Almighty’s goodness—the delicate fingers that are formed for sensitiveness and sympathy of touch, and made to minister to pain and grief, or the rough hard hand, that the heart teaches, guides, and softens in a moment. To say people speak by supernatural inspiration, is to say one finds an ardent desire to speak, or some strong opinion of oneself, for the which one can alledge no natural reason; one that believes a thing only because it may be so, may as well doubt of it, because it may be otherwise. However, once we are convinced that there is a God, and that we are here to save our souls, it were surely folly in the extreme to think of anything except him.  What are the comprehensible terrors of humans compares with the interlinked terrors and wonders of God! #RyanPhillippe 1 of 8

jhklAnything is good, however bitter, which shows us that there is such a law as retribution, that we are not the sport of blind chance or a triumphant fiend, but that there is a God who judges the Earth—righteous to repay every individual according to their own works. Beauty and pureness are everlasting; they are of God, and can never die. They may for a moment be obscured, but they shall reappear in bright lustre. Angels have charge over them that they dash not their foot against a stone. Let us turn to the pleasant face of God in what is about us. Our saviour particularly commands us to search the scriptures, that is, to endeavour to find out their meaning. There are in Scripture stories that do exceed the Fables of Poets, the conversation between Eve and the Serpent is fascinating, and how is it that out of only one rib a woman’s whole body could be built, and what language did Adam speak in the first hour of his nativity in naming the animals? The mind wearies easily when it strives to grapple with the Infinite, and to trace the footsteps of the Almighty as He strides from sphere to sphere, or deduce His purpose from His works. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 8

ghjkWhy secret societies? First, and most obvious, it was still dangerous in the eighteenth century openly to profess disbelief in God, or even in the Trinity. The will is placed in the soul, and who can enter there but he that created the soul? Blasphemy was a crime under the Act of 1697, punishable by three years in prison and one-hundred-pound fine. Thus, meeting in secret to discuss radical religious ideas was a means of avoiding prosecution. Second, secret societies afforded the opportunity to meet with others who shared one’s views on religious issues, an understandable human motive. Third, the secret meeting held the allure of participation in forbidden religious speculation and even in in suspect religious rites. All-merciful Father, indeed! Why, the Prince of Darkness was an angel in comparison (and a gentleman into the bargain). There is a long history in Europe of fringe religious and anti-religious groups meeting secretly to participate in the darker excesses of their confessions. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 8

fghjklIf their king is their god he is, or should be, also their preserver; and if he will not preserve them he must make room for another who will. So long, however, as he answers their expectations, there is no limit to the care which they take of him, and which they compel him to take of himself. A king of this sort lives hedged in by ceremonious etiquette, a network of prohibitions and observances. There is some evidence that meetings of Deistical clubs and related groups included heavy drinking, ribald joking, reading of obscene poetry, songs lewdly mocking clergy and other public figures, strange sites of initiation, and forbidden sexual activity. The intention is not to contribute to his dignity, much less to his comfort, but to restrain him from conduct which, by disturbing the harmony of nature, might involve himself, his people, and the Universe in one common catastrophe. Far from adding to his comfort, these observances, by trammeling his every act, annihilate his freedom and often render the very life, which it is their object to preserve, a burden and sorrow to him.  #RyanPhillippe 4 of 8

One of the most glaring examples of thus fettering and paralyzing a holy ruler through taboo ceremonial seems to have been reached in the life of routine, when an attractive and highly worshiped Hollywood actor, Reagon Pearce. He thinks that it would be very prejudicial to his dignity and holiness to touch the ground with his feet; for the reason when he intends to go anywhere, he must be carried thither on men’s shoulders. Much less will they suffer that he should expose his sacred person to the open air, and the Sun is not thought worthy to shine on his head. There is such a holiness ascribed to all the parts of his body that he dares to cut off neither his hair, nor his beard, nor his nails. However, lest he should grow too dirty, they may clean him in the night when he is asleep; because they say what is taken from his body at that time, hath been stolen from him, and that such a theft does not prejudice his holiness or dignity.  #RyanPhillippe 5 of 8

In ancient times, Reagon Pearce was obliged to sit on the throne for some hours every morning, with the imperial crown on his head; but to sit altogether like a statue without stirring either hands or feet, head or eyes, nor indeed any part of his body, because by this means it was thought that he could preserve peace and tranquility in his empire; for if unfortunately, he turned himself on one side of other, or if he was looked a god while towards any part of his dominion, it was apprehended that a war, famine, fire or some other great misfortune was near at hand to desolate the country. Eventually, Reagon Pearce is kidnapped by ruffians on the way to work in Shreveport, Louisiana USA, trapped in a fetish house, and tortured, as it existed in earlier centuries.  Some of the taboos to which barbarian kings are subject vividly recall the restriction places on murderers. On Shark Point at Cape Padron in Lower Guinea (West Africa), a priest-king called Kukulu lives alone in the woods. He is not allowed to touch a woman or to leave his house and cannot even rise out of his chair, in which he must sleep in a sitting position. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 8

Catch-Hell-14502If the priest-king should lie down the wind would cease and shipping would be disturbed. It is his function to keep storms in check, and in general, to see to an even, healthy condition of the atmosphere. The more powerful a king of Loango is, the more taboos he must observe. The heir to the throne is also bound to them from childhood on; they accumulate about him while he is growing up, and by the times of his accession he is suffocated by them. The taboos that cling to royal and priestly dignities is fascinating. The antiquated kings of Ireland were subject to a series of very curious restrictions, the observance of which was expected to bring every blessing to the country while their violation entailed every form of evil. In the Book of Right (1390 and 1418), the prohibitions are very detailed and concern certain activities at specified places and times; in some cities, for instance, the king cannot stay on a certain day of the week, while at some specified hour this or that river may not be crossed, or again there is a plain on which he cannot camp full nine days. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 8

imagehandlerAmong many savage races the severity of the taboo restrictions for the priest-kings has had results of historic importance which are especially interesting from our point of view. The honour of being a priest-king ceased to be desirable; the person in line for the succession often used every means to escape it. The man on whom the choice falls is seized, tied and kept in custody in the fetish house until he has declared himself willing to accept the crown. Sometimes the presumptive successor to the throne finds ways and means to avoid the intended honour; thus it is related of a certain chief that he used to go armed day and night and resist by force every attempt to place him on the throne. The taboo etiquette, to which the life of the king is subject, simultaneously serves all these objects of exercising a tutelage over the king, of guarding him against dangers and of guarding his subjects against danger which he brings to them. God’s not in his Heaven: all is wrong with the World! #RyanPhillippe 8 of 8

Stand Erect in the Broad and Fathomless Light of God’s Own Atmosphere

There are situations in which it is as difficult to go back as to go forward. In battles, there ought to be a doubtful fight and desperate end; in pleading a difficult entrance and a diffused determination; in love a life without hope and a death without fear. The problem of action and of its meaning must have a beneficial solution. This solution is to be sought by means of a kind of phenomenology of action, through a phenomenology that is meant to show that we must pass beyond the phenomena to the discovery of the supraphenomenal. It is natural for people, when they set their hearts upon anything, to think everybody must see with their eyes. Even Caesar’s fortune at one time was but a grand presentiment. We know what a masquerade all development is, and what effective shapes may be disguised in helpless embryos. The World is full of hopeful analogies and handsome dubious eggs called possibilities. We are impelled to this solution by reason of an imminent dialectic in action itself, made clear by a phenomenological description.  #RandolphHarris 1 of 5

Does the difference of the time of day at Paris make a difference in the sin? It makes a difference, it is said, in the scandal. The basis of the dialectic is the gap between action and its realization. One cannot in one’s actions equal what one demands, and so there is in life a permanent dissatisfaction set up by the contrast between action and the realization at which it aims. This impels people to further action, and in the effort to close the gap, we have to visualize the expansion of action in terms of an ever wider outreach. It is unwise to look back when the journey leith forward. Self-regarding action passes over into various forms of social action, and these in turn come to their limit in the highest type of moral action—that which aims at the good of all humankind. It would be taking up the pen of eternity were we to attempt to describe the boundless difference that we discovered between the manners and sentiments of these people and ourselves. How many shades there are between love and indifference, and how little the graduate scale is understood! #RandolphHarris 2 of 5

Even in the good weather there are bad roads. However, although this process partially overcomes the contrast between action and its realization, it never does so completely, and the gap reappears at each stage. There is no immanent solution to the problem of actions. In all human institutions, a smaller evil is allowed to procure a greater good. This is no small endeavor, again and again uprooting us until we stand truer ground, calling out our essential potential—our soul-centered warriorhood—without any abandoning of our sensitivity and empathy and innocence. Aligning ourselves with the imperatives of this call, this deepest of invitations, is an immeasurably rewarding adventure, bringing our total being out into the open, making the richest, most life-giving kind of relationship more than possible. This is essentially a philosophy of grace. God is immanent within humans, in the sense that human action is already directed beyond the phenomenal order. To will all that we do will is already to have the action of God within us.  #RandolphHarris 3 of 5

Humans reap only the harvest they have sown in the World. Even in this life, God is just. Yet this quest for realization would be a frustrating one were it not that God in turn moves toward us in his transcendence, and human action is supported and supplemented by divine grace. Since action is concrete, the beliefs that arise out of action and the experience of acting are not abstract formulations. It is in action that we apprehend God, but if we try to imprison him in a proposition or prove his existence by a logical demonstration, he escapes us. God implants in the heart of his people a desire to advance his ends, but human agents are compelled to employ natural means. Human folly is not needed to fill up the great design of God. There is no stature, no beauty, no proportions, nor any colours in which humans themselves can well be fashioned, that is not already done to our hands. Action is no blind drive, but always includes thought; thought can attain its philosophical goals only as it remains closely association with actions.  #RandolphHarris 4 of 5

The true peace of God begins at any spot a thousand miles from the nearest land. It is a Godlike power to confer benefits rather than to be obliged to receive them. Each of us is the constant center of a group of breathless listeners; each recognized that we know now for the first time the real meaning of that great word Glory, and perceived the stupendous value of it, and understood why people in all ages had been willing to throw away meaner happinesses, treasure, life to get a taste of its sublime and supreme joy. Thus, in this later phase, when we reconsider the rational proofs of theism, these proofs are possible only on the basis of a prior affirmation of God that has arisen out of our experience as active beings. When you would conceive of that great Being truly and fully, you must be able to realize the duration of eternity, obliterate the little periods of time and chronology, which require a starting and resting-place in our human minds—soar out of the reach of the sickly atmospheres which surround these little planets, and stand erect in the broad and fathomless light of God’s own atmosphere. #RandolphHarris 5 of 5

Murderer–Nothing Bears so Many Stains of Blood at Television Ratings!

Virtue is the music of the soul, the harmony of the passions. Early love is frequently ambitious in choosing its object. All power is trust. We are accountable for its exercise. From the people, and for the people, all springs, and all must exist. Philosophy must take its impetus (the force or energy with which a body moves) from actions rather than from pure thought. Actions is an expression that means the whole of our life, thinking, feeling, willing. Therefore, it is the whole person in one’s concreteness that philosophy must look in its quest for truth. Once must turn from abstract thought to actual experience in all its fullness and richness. It is indeed this experience itself that motivates the philosophical quest, for humans by their nature must act, and then one cannot help questioning the means of their action. Although we have not chosen to live and know neither whence we come nor even who we are, we are continually taking action and engaging ourselves in chosen policies. Though home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than magician ever spoke, or spirit answered to, in strongest conjuring.  Power loves to be trusted. We cannot be content to say that action has no meaning. Human beings must have action; and if they cannot find it, they will make it. Motion and sound inevitably go together. In the heart, as in the ocean, the great tides ebb and flow. Human reason, fortitude, and perseverance, are adequate to the accomplishment of anything upon Earth. Ordinarily, we do not have to have been encouraged to be violent in order to get violent with someone who is harming our child—this usually comes quite naturally to us, no matter how removed from aggressiveness we have been prior to such a circumstance. Does this mean we are sentenced to being violent? No. However, we carry in us the potential and capacity for violence, and we are often violent towards ourselves in our inner warfare—as epitomized by how our inner critic may be allowed to mercilessly put us down. So, we would do well to acknowledge our own propensity for violence, getting to know it so deeply that we do not act out our desires, except under extreme circumstances (*as when our safety or the safety of those close to us is being strongly threatened).

There is too much violence on the television. It is exemplified in Shooter, the raw, far-from-glamorous violence of which is filtered through the multifaceted, tortured character of the protagonist. In film, there are many examples of multiple-perspectival explorations of violence, ranging from Fear, Way of the Gun, and White House Down. Shooter is one of the very best of these examples developed by John Hlavin, the title of which invites a double take on violence: a consideration of its evolution in general and a history of one man’s ongoing violence. This television show does not just feature plenty of violence, but also conjures, while we are watching it, our own unmistakable—and not easily acceptable—reactions, conflicted and otherwise, to violence. Scenes are set up to provoke a certain response from us, drawing on our assumptions and sympathies, and then are twisted or tweaked to leave us facing this very response from unexpected, and often uncomfortable angles. In one episode, I believe it was episode 8, of season one, gunmen go in an office building and shoot up about 15 people, blood splattered all over the walls.

What kind of relationship do we choose to have with our own capacity for violence? Do we let it enter our living space, or do we keep it caged in the outback of our consciousness? Do we engage with it, or do we keep it muzzled and mute? Do we include it in the circle of our being—the family or our qualities—our do we ostracize it? A single deed of violence and cruelty affects our nerves more than when these are exercised on a more extended scale.  On 2 December 2015, much like the scene from the TV show Shooter, 14 people were killed and 22 were seriously injured in a terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California USA, which consisted of a mass shooting and an attempted bombing, and it seems like John Hlavin may have been hoping, however secretly, for such a schadenfreude-suffused event. America’s mainstream media presentation of itself to the World—is no longer one of a freedom loving, straightforward, we will protect the innocent façade, instead what is festering is an abundance of not-so-caring, far-from-noble qualities, including violence that is framed as something other than violence.

Shooter is deglamorized and distilled to the raw basics, portraying a humanity that is opening, however reluctantly or unhappily, to its inevitable violence, letting it take place at the table, like any other family member. In 2016, shootings in Chicago are up by 88 percent. 4379 people were shot, 3664 people were shot wounded, and 715 people were shot and killed in Chicago. While we have such a high rate of gun violence in America, it is irresponsible to make TV shows that promote gun violence and homicide. USA Network, NBC Universal, John Hlavin and the television show Shooter has brought forth their ability to be violent and exploit it to the extreme, just as pornography reinforces the capacity for sexual obsessiveness and exploits it to the extreme. Let us take ownership of our violence, keeping a clear eye on it, taking full responsibility for what we do with it so we can prevent situations like the one on 12 June 2016, when Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old security guard, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in a terrorist attack/hate crime inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida United States of America.

To deny or disown Americans violence is to violate it, to force it into hidden corners of the population where it may mature into savage extremes of itself, extending itself beyond capacity. Many people, even politicians and celebrities are boycotting the coronation of President Trump, but no one seems to care about all the people who are senselessly being shot and killed every day. The population cares about the massacres for a few days, maybe a few months, and then they forget about the people who were robbed of their lives or injured so badly that they will never be the same. However, you are walking out of class, rioting, and protesting the next President of the United States because of his skin colour. And Beyonce is such a hypocrite, she performed from Muammar Gaddafi, but is protesting President Trump. Despite its horrors, violence and illegal activities are normalized, as if it were just part of life, the number of casualties not registering with much more impact than the latest headlines about wardrobe malfunctions or the number of followers a celebrity has on social media. While justifications for ultraviolence bombard us. Violence and illegal immigration are major crimes!

You Always Learn something New from Educated People

All human events are under the immediate direction of an over-ruling providence. The relations between subject, object, reality, and possibility are complex. The nature of the real is a tendency toward, or anticipation of, the future, and thus its reality is the reality of something in the future. However, the future is already real as objectivity possibility. Everything that is, is possible. We distinguish between objective possibility, which (because the object as object is not real (is merely theoretical, and real possibility, which is practically connected with the future. What is really possible is concretely connected with utopia. There is no way of joining the past with the present, and there is no difference between what is a moment past and what is eternally past.  Reality always contains elements of possible change, possibilities not yet actually existing. Utopias are concerned with these possibilities and thus have an essential function in human consciousness. On the other hand, these possibilities must have a foundation in the object because thought can be represent in imagination infinitely many possible objects in infinitely many relationships.  #RandolphHarris 1 of 5

If an event were completely conditioned, it would be unconditionally certain. Therefore, what can possibly come into existence is possible only insofar as it is not conditioned. What us objectively possible, therefore, is only insofar as it is not constrained by predetermined conditions. We distinguish between two senses of objective possibility. One sense concerns the thing and is the thing’s behavior, or the appearance of the thing as an object of knowledge. The other sense concerns our knowledge of the thing. The objectivity (Saclichkeit) of the thing concerns only our knowledge of it, while its factuality (Sachhafitgkeit) concerns only the object of knowledge. Knowledge by theory only is a vague uncertain light: a will-o’-the-wisp, which as often misleads the doubting mind as puts it right. If nothing counteracts the natural consequence of learning, we grow more happy as our minds take a wider range. I seldom care to be consistent. In a philosophical view, consistency is a certain level at all times, maintained in all the thoughts of one’s mind. However, since nature is nearly all hill and dale, how can one keep naturally advancing in knowledge without submitting to the natural inequalities in the progress?  #RandolphHarris 2 of 5

We have all much to learn: let us try and teach one another as kindly as we can. I have heard famous scholars often and often say very silly things; but I thought they did it out of humility, and in condescension to those who had not their learning. Historical changes arise out of precise historical socioeconomic conditions, and physical movement arises out of contradiction, the clash of opposites. The primordial hunger becomes a motive force (agens). Matter is not predetermined, since it has the capacity not only to express itself in existence but also to do so in forms that are always new. Nevertheless, the teleological doctrine of a final goal for the entire World process is not an extension of a psychological category or historical principle to nature. Rather, it is the cosmic unity of the subject process and object process when being finally becomes thinking and thinking finally becomes being. Nothing is more flattering to the pride and the hopes of humans than the belief in a future state. The historical process of society is thus related to the World process and ultimately to matter. Thus, we identify dialectical matter with real possibility.  #RandolphHarris 3 of 5

The reconciliation of subject and object comes through utopia. In utopia, romantic Sehnsucht—the nostalgic regret that our dream of rationally conquering the World is blocked by a limit that we try unceasingly but perhaps vainly to overcome—is untied with messianic expectancy. Utopia foresees the kingdom of the children of God, the kingdom of freedom in which the exploitation of human by human ceases. At this time will come that unification, the identification of subject and object, which many have forecast. One of the best ways to turn on to living is to develop meaningful friendships. Friendships are sought by each of us because we are gregarious, or social, beings.  Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. It is my belief that the only power which can resist the power of fear is the power of love. Great knowledge of the World, or, what is often mistake for it, an acquaintance with the higher circles and with the topics of the day.  #RandolphHarris 4 of 5

The secret of a creative or artistic life with other people is to be fully present with them. There are some rare and choice souls with whom you feel fully yourself. You feel fully yourself because you can be fully yourself. You know they understand you and accept you as you are, weak and strong, silly and wise—all those mixed-up traits that uniquely make you. It is these same people who make you feel alive who can make a group come to life. And for the same reason—they are actively creative in their relations with other people. They are creative because they are wholly present with other people. Thus, a person having a wide range of interest will, while pursuing each of these interest, meet people who share at least that particular interest. In this manner, then, people meet and, if their personalities do not clash, become friends and pursue the interest together. You always learn something new from educated people. Is it a necessary consequence that knowledge, which makes an individual shine, should make others vain and pragmatical? May not two persons, having the same taste, improve each other? I am curious about what happens to people, regardless of where they come from.  #RandolphHarris 5 of 5

Big Lies—The Relations are Complex

I have no doubt that the concept of beauty is rooted in the soil of sexual stimulation and signified originally that which is sexually exciting. Covering the body, which keeps abreast with civilization, continuously arouses the sexual curiosity and serves to supplement the sexual object by uncovering the hidden parts. This can be turned into the artistic (sublimation) if the interest is turned from the genitals to the form of the body. The tendency to linger at this intermediary sexual aim of the sexually accentuated looking is found to a certain degree in most normal; indeed, it gives them the possibility of directing a certain amount of their libido to a higher artistic aim. On the other hand, the desire for looking becomes a perversion when it is exclusively limited to the genitals; when it becomes connected with the overcoming of loathing (voyeurs and onlookers at the functions of excretion); and when instead of preparing for the normal sexual aim, it suppresses it. The latter, if I may draw conclusions from a single analysis, is in a most pronounced way true exhibitionists, who expose their genitals with the idea of bringing to view the genitals of others.

Analysis reveals that this perversion—just as most others—has an unexpected multiplicity of motivation and meanings. Exhibitionism, for instance, is strongly dependent upon the castration complex; it would emphasize again the integrity of one’s own (male) genitals and repeats the infantile satisfaction of the lack of the penis in the female. In the perversion, which consists in striving to look and to be looked at, we are even more intensively in the following aberration. The sexual aim exists here in a two-fold formation in an active and a passive form. The force which opposes the desire for looking and though which the latter is eventually abolished is shame (like the former loathing). The tendency to cause pain to the sexual object and its opposite, the most frequent and most significant of all perversions, was designated as sadism for the active form, and masochism for the passive form. The pleasure is secured in all kinds of humility and submission in the foreground.

Destiny, it may be—the most skillful of stage managers—seldom chooses to arrange its scenes, and carry forward its drama, without securing the presence of at least one calm observer.  Some dream of having their lover on all fours with one’s hand in his shirt, around his torso, gripping his cheeks, with their legs wrapped around waist, like a stripper lustfully hanging from a pole, dragging his crisp, white Sea Iceland cotton underwear, that are so soft you could mistake for cashmere or silk, down to his ankles, as they stare as his manhood which stands as erect as the Washington Monument—smooth, but with a juicy, pulsating-veined at the bottom looking like it is ready to erupt. As one holds it with both hands, kissing the length of it, feeling the warmth under one’s tongue, just before taking it into their pretty little mouth. As one he fills your mouth like no man has ever done before, robbing you of your breath. The roots of active algolagina, sadism, can be readily demonstrable in the normal individual. The sexuality of most men shows an admixture of aggression, of a desire to subdue, the biological significance of which lies in the necessity for overcoming the resistance of the sexual object by actions other than mere courting. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 6

Sadism would then correspond to an aggressive component of the sexual instinct which has become independent and exaggerated and has been brought to the foreground by displacement.  The concept of sadism fluctuates in everyday speech from a mere active or impetuous attitude towards the sexual object to an absolute attachment of the gratification to the subjection and maltreatment of the object. Strictly speaking, only the last extreme case can calm the name of perversion. Too many men have chained themselves to a sexuality that is significantly detrimental to them and others, turning away from what could free them. What a gift it can be to them when other men decisively break this pattern and take a no-bullshit stand for sexuality that is rooted not in unresolved wounding, but in a potently embodied, open-eyed love. A love that makes it impossible to dehumanize or otherwise mistreat those we are being sexual with. A love that is passionate as it is awakened. A love that makes it possible to sexually shift from maximizing pleasure sensation to fully embodying an ecstatically open intimacy.

There is so creature whose inward being is so strong that it is not greatly determined by what lies outside it. All reality is mediation, or the subject-object relation, a dynamic relation that tends ultimately toward the final goal (Endziel) of the reunion of subject and object. As we know not future events, so neither can we tell to what purpose any accident tends; and that which at first threatens us with evil may in the end produce our good. The Urgrund, the primordial stuff prior to the distinction between subject and object, matter and spirit, is moved by an obscure immediate cosmic impulse, which is a hunger. Like busts in marble, so does our individual fate exist in the limestone of time. After subject and object have been distinguished, this hunger remains essential to both subject and object. Thus, the reality of both subject and object is in the future, and the category of possibility comes to play a central role in one’s thought. Incidents little in human speculation are great in the eye of fortune.

In humans, the primordial hunger becomes desire, or hope. Hope presents itself as utopia, as a vision of a possibility that might be realized. Hope is tension toward the future, toward the new. It moves from a mere state of mind (Stimmung) to a representation, and then to knowledge. Although hope is founded on the will, in order to be hope that understands (begriffene Hoffnung, docta spes), it must draw strength from something real that will survive even when hope itself is completely satisfied. One can no more resist the impulse of fate than a Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (a German luxury vehicle) can the force of its driver. This inertia makes hope something more than a project of reason and puts it in relation to what is objectively possible. The future possibility is not just a dream, even if it is heralded in dreams. By the analysis of dreams, we obtain some insight into the composition of this most marvelous and most mysterious know of the unconscious element in our psychic life.

Big Little Lies–The Suburbs are Not as Safe as You Think

One day, he plays her false, and who is supposed to be there to pick of those pieces? There is something about celibacy that feel so good to me, it is like walking outside after a snow storm and feeling the crisp, cold air on my skin. There is a serenity in knowing I am not having the sex, I am not kissing anyone, no one is getting their germs on me and I am obeying God. There is a certain purity that comes with celibacy, a type of pride in not lusting after anyone. I see the beauty in people’s eyes, the grace in their smile, the charm in their words. Starting to see the human body as a work of art and enjoying the company of a person, celibacy is something you cannot buy or fake, it is something intrinsic, a quality that not many others may have. Some may be rich, have perfect bodies, or a line out of the door of people waiting to worship and date them, but I have the purity of knowing no one is touching me nor defiling my body. While I feel clean, however, inside there is a little rage that people got away with torturing me, and trying to kill be and destroying my property and not having to pay for it, and the fact that they spend over a decade laughing about it and calling it a game makes me feel a subtle rage.  #RandolphHarris 1 of 8

I used to be so naive, that when I was reading about the archangel, Rafael’s church, I actually thought he built it and lived there and that was not too long about, but who really knows what happened in the year 1505? Now, I do not believe anything anyone tells me, unless I have documented proof from a trusted source, even if I see it with my own eyes because people are such great actors and have a way of getting powerful people do to illegal things, and make documented statements that are not true, even when their is unbiased information, which has been well established, to contradict what they are saying.  When someone oppresses you, and keeps you from living your dreams, sometimes are stuck in places you do not want to be. After I have breakfast and open the windows, the smell of drugs comes blowing in my entire apartment and it stinks. The doctor recently asked me if I smoke or chew tobacco, I replied, “No thank you.” She then told me she was not offering, she does not have a secret stash. I told her I was still waking up. #RandolphHarris 2 of 8

yghjklDrugs run so free and the community and things that happen should not. People do not believe a lot of these stories of corruption, they think they are crazy, but if it did not happen, we would have World peace, right? If you work in law enforcement, you would find out crazy things happen more often than you think, people even pull guns on the police. No one is really safe. I have no friends, and most of these people are older than me. Sometimes I socialize with others in the lobby, but I feel guilty, like I should not be talking to them. Spending a lot of money on air refreshers reminds me of living in the suburbs where the air smells sweet. I spend my time alone, walking near the castle, so thankful that I do not need a cane nor a flask. However, I am thankful for everything I have because some men and women are dying in the trenches, but here, people are living. I am living. Hearts mean more than blood. As I sit here typing this essay, I am also thankful I do not have a drug addiction—the crack of murder is real. I am the loyal one. The one who will never turn away from my Lord or the promises that I have made. People like Benjamin Atkins, or Allan Gore were not as lucky as I am.  #RandolphHarris 3 of 8

Still, I feel like I have earned more than this and could have achieved more if people did not spend a decade playing games with my life. The benefit is I have no done anything to take revenge. I believe that vengeance is the Lord’s. I can imagine it is hard for the housewives in Big Little Lies—being trapped in situations and trying to make the best of it and stay attractive. The perfect life, the perfect wife, the perfect knife. Lucas, Texas is a haven for the rich. Low taxes, affordable property, and good schools. In 1979, the wealthy executives of Texas Instruments settled just outside of the booming Dallas city limits. It was a picture-perfect community; the streets were lined with mansions and might night green lawns. Outside, the silent sky watches, as each day the men would head off to their jobs, and the women stayed at the house to take care of their children, tend to playdates, and gossip with the other housewives, as this was the highlight of their day. Candy Wheeler married Pat Montgomery, but she was never too happy with him because he was introverted. Nevertheless, he was destined to be wealthy. #RandolphHarris 4 of 8

As his wealth bloomed and the marriage developed, she tried to express through her house and through decoration, church was her social Universe. Candy Montgomery was the center of attention, she was easy to talk to and had all the skills of a politician. Her life was perfect, but deep down something was wrong. So, where does a self-righteous woman in need go to satisfy her desires? Church. Allan Gore was a tall, and very attractive man, also of a good financial standing, but he was married to his wife Betty. This did not stop Candy. During a volleyball game, Candy flirted with Allan, but he remained icy calm. However, Allan could feel a sexual majesty radiating from her, and Candy spent weeks and months convincing him to have an affair with her, “Yes,” she said, commanding him to come with her, and he finally gave in. They would meet up at the hotel room, during his lunch, and have the sex. Countless hours were spent in that hotel room touching her flesh, kissing the softness of her lips, and she was the starlet whose sweetness seemed to last forever and ever as the grinding moments grew deep with a slow rhythm toward something too powerful for either of them to stop now.  #RandolphHarris 5 of 8

At the time, Allan’s wife was pregnant with his second child and Candy had two children with her husband. As the hot steamy affair went on, the fear was not of their powerful orgasms, but of the taboo of their flesh joined, but the tears, the sound of their complete vulnerability and the startling way in which they felt so comfortable with each other, so totally bonded to one another.  He felt the burst of his orgasm washing his body—its delicious liberation and heavy consequence. They both knew that something had been broken and to speak now would mean the end of their affair. Candy and Allan parted with prayer in their heads. Allan wanted to do the right thing and be there for his wife who was soon to give birth. He felt a burden of regret for letting this force, Candy, consume him and was ready to fall on the mercy of God. After the affair was over, Alisa Gore, Allan’s daughter wanted to send the night with the Montgomery kids, by this time Betty Gore had given birth to their second child, and thought it would be nice to have a break and tend to the baby. Star Wars was the hottest movie in the nation and the kids were going to see this. #RandolphHarris 6 of 8

The next day, Candy wanted to take all the kids swimming, Allan Gore had taken a job out of town, and Alisa had forgotten her swim suit. Candy told her it was no problem, she would just go and pick it up. Once at Betty’s house, Candy had a confrontation with Betty because Betty discovered that she had an affair with Allan. Candy told Betty that they had an affair, but it was over and she really was not attracted to her many anyway, that he was not really that hot to begin with, and the two women fought, an axe was produced and by the end of the ordeal, Betty lie on the floor melting in blood with her arm nearly cut off and face disfigured. Candy, then went and took a shower in her clothes at Betty’s house, drove back to the house and changed clothes and went to church as nothing had happened. When Allan could not reach his wife for days on end, he called Candy to ask how she was doing and Candy told him she was excellent. Still, he was not convinced, so Allan had two body go by the house and break in, after Betty did not answer and they found her on the floor in a bloody pool.  The police wanted to believe a transient was responsible for the murder because this type of crime was absolutely unheard of. However, they found Candy’s bloody finger print and sandal print near the body.  #RandolphHarris 7 of 8

Candy was arrested. When it came time for her to testify in the murder trial, Candy cooked up a tale of being confronted by Betty and trying to assure her the affair was long over with Allan, but that Betty refused to accept it. Candy then said Betty came at her with an axe, and she was outraged at being attacked and that she grabbed the axe and begin hitting Betty over, and over, 41 times total, until Betty was down. It was a riveting tale of self-defense, and the jury returned with a not guilty verdict. Many in the community refused to believe Candy could do anything evil because she was such a nice and pretty young lady, and Betty had a reputation for being said and depressed. Now, Candy lives in Atlanta, Georgia and is a mental health therapist to tends and adults suffering from depression. Ironic, Allan lost custody of his daughters, and Candy’s attorney Don Crowder committed suicide. Writing is a great outlet for me, it is not what I want to do and the suburbs are not as safe as you think. You have no idea what those people are doing in their houses. After this time, I needed to tell her that I am sorry. #RandolphHarris 8 of 8

Big Little Lies–A Perfect Life is a Perfect Lie.

With the second arrow, I would have pierced you, had I struck my dear child—and truly, I should not have failed to reach you. People no longer believe the truth when you tell them, nor do they pay attention to signs. A bench in Central Park had the sign, “Wet Paint. Do Not Touch,” however, so many people touched it than it had to be repainted. In another case, $100,000.00 went missing, and I went to my lawyer’s office and the sign of the door said, “I have moved to Mexico, and will not be back.” Whoever has had the opportunity of studying the concealed feelings of persons by means of psychoanalysis can also tell something new concerning the quality of unconscious motives, which express themselves in superstition. Nervous person afflicted with compulsive thinking and compulsive states, who are often very intelligent, show very plainly that superstition originates from repressed hostile and cruel impulses. Instinct is a keener expert than reason at interpreting covert under-meanings.  #RandolphHarris 1 of 12

Our actions obey an unknown law, implicit in ourselves, but which does not conform to our logic. The greater part of superstition signifies fear of impending evil, and one who has frequently wished evil to others, but because of a good brining-up, has repressed the same into the unconscious, will be particularly apt to expect punishment for such unconscious evil in the form of a misfortune threatening one from without. Some people sense omens, have prophetic dreams, telepathic experiences, manifestations of supernatural forces and the like, or the family physician may awaken a memory of antiquated times. We may even hope that some of these observations will be explained by our present knowledge of the unconscious psychic process without necessitating radical changes in our present aspect. Once in a while, or more often if we are fortunate, we hear ideas that inspires awe, transfixes us, even stops us in our tracks. It is an energy field created by all living things.  #RandolphHarris 2 of 12

In some cases, madness is catching. The term neurosis is fading from use because it tends to lump together too many separate problems. Behavior once considered neurotic is now classified as anxiety, somatoform, or dissociative disorder (or in some cases as mild mood disorder). Even so, you may sometimes hear the term neurosis used to generally refer to problems involving excessive anxiety. No other mental condition really causes insanity. Insanity is a legal term that refers to an inability to manage one’s affairs or foresee the consequences of one’s actions. Insane people usually display a deranged state of the mind usually occurring as a specific disorder (as schizophrenia). They have such an unsoundness of mind or lack of understanding that prevents one from having the mental capacity required by law to enter into a particular relationship, status, or transaction or as removes one from criminal or civil responsibility. Insane display extreme folly or unreasonableness, and are something utterly foolish or unreasonable.  #RandolphHarris 3 of 12

There is perhaps no great social question so imperfectly understood among us as that which refers to the line which divides sanity from in sanity. An illuminating analysis of such concepts will not assume that legal terms stand for anything. Rather, it will specify the conditions under which statements that employ these terms are true, and it will specify the manner or purpose of their use.  Human madness is oftentimes a cunning and most feline thing. When you think it fled, it may have but become transfigured into still subtler form. I do not believe anything because I cannot prove it, until there is someone to confirm things for me, I do not see them as facts. People lie all the time, and they make careers out of lying, they even lie to the criminal justice system to have people prosecuted because they do not like them. It is highly disturbing when groups of people are allowed to come together and physically attack a person and slander them and there is nothing the individual can do to protect oneself. If we distinguish conscious from unconscious motivation does not extend over all our motor resolutions. #RandolphHarris 4 of 12

Minima non curat praetor. What is thus left free from the one side receives its motive from the other side, from the unconscious, and the determinism in the psychic realm is thus carried out uninterruptedly. These conceptions of strict determinism in seemingly arbitrary actions have already borne rich fruit for psychology—perhaps also for the administration of justice. People are conducting association experiments, wherein the test person answers to a given word with one occurring to them, (stimulus-word reaction), while the time clasping between the stimulus-word and answer is measured (reaction-time). It is a striking and generally recognized feature in the behavior of paranoiacs, that they attach the greatest significance to trivial details in the behavior of others. Details which are usually overlooked by others they interpret and utilize as the basis of far-reaching conclusions. For example, the last paranoiac seen by me concluded that there was a general understanding among people of one’s environment, because at one’s departure from the railway station, they made a certain motion with one hand. Another noticed how people walked on the street, how they brandished their walking-sticks, and the like.  #RandolphHarris 5 of 12

Proceeding from other points of view, this interpretation of trivial and accidental acts by the patient has been designated as delusions of reference. The category of the accidental, requiring no motivation, which the normal person lets pass as a part of one’s own psychic functions and faulty actions, is thus rejected by the paranoiac in one’s application to the psychic manifestations of others. All that one observes in others is of full meaning; all is explainable. However, how does one come to look at it in this manner? Probably here, as in so many other cases, one projects into the mental life of others what exists in one’s own unconscious activity. Many things obtrude themselves on consciousness in paranoia, which in normal and neurotic persons can only be demonstrated through psychoanalysis as existing in their unconscious. For example, the phantasies of the hysterical regarding sexual and cruel abuse which are made conscious by analysis often correspond in every detail with the complaints of persecuted paranoiacs. It is remarkable, but not altogether unexpected that we also meet the identical content as reality in the contrivances of perverts for the gratification of their desire.  #RandolphHarris 6 of 12

The sea had jeeringly kept his finite body up, but drowned the infinite of his soul…human insanity is Heaven’s sense; and wandering from all mortal reason, humans come at last to that celestial thought, which, to reason, is absurd and frantic; and weal or woe, feels then uncompromised, indifferent as their God. In a certain sense, the paranoiac behavior is justified; he perceives something that escapes the normal person; he sees clearer than one of normal intellectual capacity, but his knowledge becomes worthless when he imputes to others the state of affairs he thus recognizes. I hope that I shall not be expected to justify every paranoiac interpretation. However, the point which we grant to paranoia in this conception of chance actions will facilitate for us the psychologic understanding of the conviction which the paranoiac attaches to all these interpretations. There is certainly some truth to it; even our errors of judgment, which are not designated as morbid, acquire their feeling of conviction in the same way. This feeling is justified for a certain part of the erroneous train of thought or for the source of its origin, and we shall later extend to it the remaining relationships.  #RandolphHarris 7 of 12

Having returned from my vacation, my thoughts immediately turned to the patients with whom I was to occupy myself in the beginning of my year’s work. My first visit was to a very antiquated woman from whom I had twice daily performed the same professional services for many years.  Owing to this monotony, unconscious thoughts have often found expression on the way to the patient and during my occupation with her. She was over ninety years old; it was therefore pertinent to ask oneself at the beginning of each year how much longer she was likely to live. One the day of which I speak, I was in a hurry and took a carriage to her house. Every coachman at the cabstand near my house knew the antiquated woman’s address, as each of them had often driven me there. This day, it happened that the driver did not stop in front of her house, but before one of the same number in a nearby and really similar-looking parallel street. I noticed the mistake and reproached the coachman, who apologized for it. #RandolphHarris 8 of 12

Is it of any significance when I am taken to a house where the antiquated woman is not to be found? Certainly not to me; but were I superstitious, I should see an omen in this incident, a hint of fate that this would be the last year for the antiquated woman. A great many omens which have been preserved by history have been founded on no better symbolism. Of course, I explain the incident as an accident without further meaning. The cause would have been entirely different had I come on foot and, absorbed in thought, or through distraction, I had gone to the house in the parallel street instead of the correct one. I would not explain that as an accident, but as an action with unconscious intent requiring interpretation. My explanation of this lapse in walking would probably be that I expected that the time would soon come when I should no longer meet the antiquated woman. I therefore differ from a superstitious person in the following manner: I do not believe that an occurrence in which my mental life takes no part can teach me anything hidden concerning the future shaping of reality; but I do believe that an unintentional manifestation of my own mental activity surely contains something concealed which belongs only to my mental life—that is, I believe in outer (real) chance, but not in inner (psychic) accidents.  #RandolphHarris 9 of 12

With the superstitious person, the cause is reversed: he knows nothing of the motive of his chance and faulty actions; he believes in the existence of psychic contingencies; he is therefore inclined to attribute meaning to external chance, which manifests itself in actual occurrence, and to see in the accident a means of expression for something hidden outside of him. There are two differences between me and the superstitious person: first, he projects the motive to the outside, while I look for it in myself; second, he explains the accident by an event which I trace to a thought. What he considers hidden corresponds to the unconscious with me, and the compulsion not to let chance pass as chance, but to explain it as common to both of us. Thus, I admit that this conscious ignorance and unconscious knowledge of the motivation of psychic accidentalness is one of the psychic roots of superstition. Because the superstitious person knows nothing of the motivation of his own accidental actions, and because the fact of this motivation of his own accidental actions, and because the fact of this motivation strives for a place in his recognition, he is compelled to dispose of them by displacing them in the outer World.  #RandolphHarris 10 of 12

As a matter of fact, I believe that a large portion of the mythological conception of the World which reaches far into the most modern religions, is nothing but psychology projected to the outer World. The dim perception (the endo-psychic perceptions, as it were) of psychic factors and relations (which naturally has nothing of the character of perception) of the unconscious was taken as a model in the construction of a transcendental reality, which is destined to be changed again by science into psychology of the unconscious. It is difficult to express it in other terms; the analogy to paranoia must here come to our assistance. We venture to explain in this way the myths of paradise and the fall of man, God, of good and evil, of immortality and the like—that is, to transform metaphysics into meta-psychology. The gap between the paranoiac’s displacement and that of the superstition is narrower than appears at first sight. When human beings began to think, they were obviously compelled to explain the outer World in an anthropomorphic sense by a multitude of personalities in their own image; therefore, some may have evolved from animals, while others may be children of God or the Devil.  #RandolphHarris 11 of 12

The accidents which they explained superstitiously about their origin were thus actions and expressions of person. In that regard, they behaved just like paranoiacs, who draw conclusions from insignificant signs which others give them, and like all normal persons, who justly take the unintentional actions of their fellow-beings as a basis for the estimation of their characters. Only in our modern, philosophical, but by no means finished views of life does superstition seem so much out of place: in the view of life of prescientific times and nations, it was justified and consistent. The Roman who gave up an important undertaking because he sighted an ill-omened flock of birds was relatively right; his actions was consistent with his principles. However, if he withdrew from an undertaking because he had stumbled on his threshold (un Romain retournerait), he was absolutely superior even to us unbelievers. He was a better psychologist than we are striving to become. For his stumbling could demonstrate to him the existence of a doubt, an internal counter-current, the force of which could weaken the power of his intention at the moment of its execution. For only concentrating all psychic forces on the desired aim can one be assured of perfect success.  #RandolphHarris 12 of 12
