Demise of the American Empire

We believe in being honest. Complete honesty is necessary for our salvation. If we accept salvation on the terms it is offered to us, we have got to be honest in every thought, in our reflections, in our meditations, in our private circles, in our deals, in our declarations, and in every act of our lives. God is honest and just in all things. “I perceive that it has been made known unto you, by the testimony of His word, that He cannot walk in crooked paths; neither doth he vary from that which he hath said; neither hath He a shadow of turning from the right to the left, or from that which is right to that which is wrong; therefore, His course is one eternal round,” reports Alma 7.20. Honest people love truth and justice. They are honest in their words and actions. They do not lie, steal, or cheat. If you do what is righteous, when you think about it, there would be to reason to lie. Those who choose to cheat and lie and deceive and misrepresent become slaves of the enemy. Lying is intentionally deceiving others. Bearing false witness is one form of lying. The Lord is not pleased with dishonesty, and we will have to account for our lies. “And our spirits must have become like unto Him, and we become devils, angels to a devil, to be shut out from the presence of our God, and to remain with the father of lies, in misery, like unto himself; yea, to that being who beguiled our first parents, who transformeth himself nigh unto an angel of light, and stirreth up the children of men unto secret combinations of murder and all manner of secret works of darkness,” reports 2 Nephi 9.9. #RandolphHarris 1 of 22

The altruistic ideal is set up for aspirants as a practical means of using the will to curb egoism and crush its pettiness. However, these things are to be done to train the aspirant in surrendering his personal self to his higher self, not in making him subservient to other human wills. The primacy of purpose is to be given to spiritual self-realization, not to social service. This above all others is the goal to be kept close to his heart, not meddling in the affairs of others. Only after he has attended adequately—and to some extent successfully—to the problem of himself can he have the right to look out for or intrude into other people’s problems. This does not mean, however, that he is to become narrowly self-centered or entirely selfish. On the contrary, the wish to confer happiness and the willingness to seek the welfare of mankind should be made the subject of solemn dedication at every crucial stage, every inspired hour, of his quest. However, prudence and wisdom bid him wait for a more active altruistic effort until he has lifted himself to a higher level, found his own inner strength, knowledge, and peace, and has learnt to stand unshaken by the storms, passions, desires, and greeds of ordinary life. “And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God—He will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbour; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God,” reports 2 Nephi 28.8. #RandolphHarris 2 of 22

Hence it is better for the beginner to keep himself any pretension to altruism, remaining silent and inactive about them. The dedication may be made, but it should be made in the secrecy of the inmost heart. Better than talk about it or premature activity for it, is the turning of attention to the work of purifying himself, his feelings, motives, mind, and deeds. Just as the word compassion is so often mistaken for a foolish and weak sentimentality, so the words egoless, unselfishness, and unself-centeredness are equally mistaken for what they are not. They are so often thought to mean nonseparatness from other individuals or the surrender of personal rights to other individuals or the setting aside of duty to us for the sake of serving other individuals. This is often wrong. The philosophical meaning of egoism is that attitudes of separateness not from another individual on the same imperfect level as us but from the one universal life-power which is behind all individuals on a deeper level than them all. When we allow the personal ego to rule us, when we allow the personal self to prevent the one universal self from entering our field of awareness, we are separated from that infinite mind. Jesus’ preachment of love of one’s neighbour as oneself is impossible to follow in all fullness until one has attained the height whereon his own true self dwells. #RanolphHarris 3 of 22

Obedience to it would mean identifying oneself with the neighbour’s physical pain and emotional suffering so that they were felt not less keenly than one’s own. One could not bear that when brought into contact with all kinds of human sorrow that shadow of life. It could be borne only when one had crushed its power to affect one’s own feelings and disturb one’s own equilibrium. Therefore, such love would bring unbearable suffering. By actively identifying oneself with those who are sorrowing, by pushing one’s sympathy with them to its extreme point, one gets disturbed and weakened. This does not improve one’s capacity to help the sufferer, but only lessens it. To love others is praiseworthy, but it must be coupled with balance and with reason or it will lose itself ineffectually in the air. Not to let his interest in other matters or his sympathy with other persons carry him away from his equilibrium, his inner peace, but to stop either when it threatens to agitate his mind or disturb his feelings, is wisdom. Love of the divine is our primary duty. Love of our neighbour is only a secondary one. Compassion is the highest moral value, the noblest human feeling, the purest creature-love. It is the final social expression of man’s divine soul. For he is able to feel with and for another man only because both are in reality related in harmony by the presence of that soul in each one. #RandolphHarris 4 of 22

There must be an end, a limit to his sacrifices on behalf of others. They must not play upon his kindness to the extent of ruining his own life. He may help them, certainly, but there are various other ways to do so than by surrendering what is essential to his own life to satisfy their emotional demands or material desires. For this notion of love is a sadly limited one. To bestow it only on a wife or a child, a sweetheart, or a sister, is to bestow it in anticipation of its being returned. Man finds in time that such giving which hopes for a getting is not enough. Love cannot stop there. It seeks to grow beyond the restricted circle of a few friends and relations. Life itself lead him on to transcend it. And this he does firstly, by transcending the lure of the pitiful transient flesh and secondly, by transforming love into something nobler and rarer—compassion. In the divine self-giving of this wonderful quality and in its expansion until all mankind is touched, love finally fulfills itself. Jesus taught, “Thou shalt not steal,” reports Matthew 19.18. Stealing is taking something that does not belong to us. When we take what belongs to someone else or to a store or to the community without permission, we are stealing. Taking merchandise or supplies from an employer is stealing. To become completely honest, we must look carefully at our lives. If there are ways in which we are being even the least bit dishonest, we should repent of them immediately. When we are completely honest, we cannot be corrupted. #RandolphHarris 5 of 22

The ideas of activation, responsibility, participation—that is, of the humanization of technological society—can find full expression only in a movement which is not bureaucratic, not connected with the political machines, and which is the result of active and imaginative efforts by those who share the same aims. Such a movement itself, in its organization and method, would be expressive of the aim to which it is devoted: to educate its members for the new kind of society in the process of striving for it. The first step would be the formation of a National Council which could be called the “Voice of America Conscience.” I think of a group of, say, fifty Americas whose integrity and capability are unquestioned. While they might have different religious and political convictions, they would share the humanist aims which are the basis for the humanization of technological society. They would deliberate and issue statements which, because of the weight of those who issued them, would be newsworthy, and because of the truth and rationality of their contents would win attention from at least a large sector of the American public. Such Councils could also be formed on a local level, dealing with the general questions bet specifically with the practical questions relevant for the city or state which they represented. One could imagine that there might be a whole organization of Councils of the Voice of American Conscience, with a nationally representative group and many local groups following basically the same aims. #RandolphHarris 6 of 22

The National Council would deal with the broad aspects of national affairs, that is, foreign and domestic policies, while the local councils would take up the questions relevant to state and communities, again concerned with broad aspects rather than with details of execution. For example, the National Council would debate the question of the Afghanistan War, our foreign policy in Asia, our assistance to the development of less affluent nations and Ukraine, the reconstruction of our cities, the problems of values, education, and culture. The local councils would debate problems of conservation, city planning, slum clearance, relocating industries, etcetera. These debates would not be conducted on a general and abstract level. On the contrary, they would constitute the best thinking of the best minds in America. Often the Counsil would form subcommittees to study special problems and call upon specialists for advice. It would be up to the Voice of American Conscience (1) to clarify the issues, (2) to show the real possibilities and alternatives, (3) to recommend solutions, (4) to respond to statements and actions by other important social bodies, and to any criticism of their own recommendations. The examination of the issues and the recommended solutions would be rooted in the rationality and humanist values which the best in American culture stands for. #RandolphHarris 7 of 22

These Councils would balance the structure based on political power represented by the government, the legislature, and the political parties. They would be the voice of reason and conscience, addressing themselves to the organs of power and to the population. Whenever the Councils did not arrive at unanimous solutions, one or more minority reports would be issued. It is easy to underestimate what such Council could do by pointing out that they would have no power. This is true in an obvious sense; it is not quite so true in a more subtle sense. Technological society, more than any society before, rests upon knowledge, on education in science and rational thought. While the average professional is not a true scientist but a mere technician, the development of scientific ideas depends on the development of scientific theory; this means that economic and political progress rest in the long run on the progress of culture. Those who represent culture have no direct power; but since the progress of society depends on their contribution, their voice will be taken seriously by a new class of people with college educations (teachers, technicians, programmers, laboratorians, research workers, professionals, etcetera) whose cooperation is a vital necessity for the functioning of the social system. Extreme importance should be attached to the training of will-power and the habit of making firm decisions, also the habit of being always ready to accept responsibilities. #RandolphHarris 8 of 22

The deliberate training of fine and noble traits of character in our schools today is almost negative. In the future much more emphasis will have to be laid on this side of our educational work. Loyalty, self-sacrifice, and discretion are virtues which a great nation most possess. And the teaching and development of these in the school is a more important matter than many other things now included in the curriculum. To make the children give up habits of complaining, whining, and howling when they are hurt, etcetera, also belongs to this part of their training. If the educational system fails to teach the child at an early age, when the boy has grown to be the man and is, for example, in the trenches, the postal service is used for nothing else than to send home letter of weeping and complaint. If our youths, during their years in the primary schools, had had their minds crammed with a little less knowledge, and if instead they had been better taught how to be masters of themselves, it would have served us well during the 2020-2024 years. Lacking an influential military caste, the United States of America never developed a strong military cult audacious enough to glorify war for its own sake. Such outbursts as Roosevelt’s “Strenuous Life” speech were rare; and it was also rare for an American writer to extol war for its effects upon the race, although Rear Admiral Stephen B. Luce, one of Mahan’s patrons, once declared that war is one of the great agencies of human conflict and that “strife in one form or another in the organic would seems to be the law of existence…Suspend the struggle, well called the battle of life, for a brief space, and death claims the victory.” #RandolphHarris 9 of 22

Most writers on war seemed to agree with Spencer that military conflict had been highly useful in developing primitive civilization but has now long outlived its value as an instrument of progress. The advocates of preparedness did not usually take the stand that there is anything inherently desirable in war, but rather quoted the old maxim, “If you wish for peace, prepare for war.” “Let us worship peace, indeed,” conceded Mahan, “as the goal at which humanity must hope to arrive; but let us not fancy that peace is to be had as a boy wrenches an unripe fruit from a tree.” Others took the position that strife is inherent in the nature of things and must be anticipated as an unhappy necessity. Once the martial fever of the short and easy war with Spain had subsided, the psychology of the American people between 1898 and 1917 was surprisingly nervous and defensive for a nation that was rapidly rising in stature as a World power. Encouraged by the eugenics movement, men talked of racial degeneracy, of race suicide, of decline of western civilization, of the effeteness of the western peoples, of the foreign peril. Warnings of decay were most commonly coupled with exhortations to revivify the national spirit. The higher races can live only live in the temperate zone, and will be forever barred from effective colonization in the tropics. Overpopulation and economic exigencies will give rise to state socialism, which will extend its tentacles into every corner of western national life. Because of the increasing dependence of the citizen upon the state, nationalism will grow, and religion, family life, and old-fashioned morality will decline. There will also be a consolidation of peoples into great centralized empires, for only these will have the capacity to survive. #RandolphHarris 10 of 22

Large armies, great cities, huge national debts will hasten cultural eclipse. The decline of competition, coupled with state education, will render the intellectual more mechanical in its operations and deprive it of the initiative that alone is capable of outstanding achievement in the arts. The result will be a World of old people, scientific rather than esthetic, unprogressive, stable, without adventure, energy, brightness, hope, or ambition Meanwhile other races will not fail in vitality, for biology shows that some are more fertile than others. Genocide is a horrible idea, but other nations will on the contrary be likely to challenge the supremacy of western civilization by industrial rather than military means. Perhaps the best that the governing races can do is face the future with courage and dignity. If all this should come to pass, it is idle to say that our pride of place will not be humiliated. “We were struggling among ourselves for supremacy in a World which we thought of as destined to belong to the Aryan races and to the Christian faith; to the letters and arts and charm of social manners which we have inherited from the best times of the past. We shall wake to find ourselves elbowed and hustled, and perhaps even thrust aside by peoples who we looked down upon as servile, and thought of as bound always to minister to our needs. The solitary consolation will be that the changes have been inevitable. It has been our work to organize and create, to carry peace and law and order over the World, that others may enter in and enjoy. Yet in some of us the feeling of caste is so strong that we are not sorry to think we shall have passed away before it arrives,” reports Charles Pearson. #RandolphHarris 11 of 22

Pearson’s fears were the beginning of a reaction from the optimism expressed by Fiske and Strong in the 1880’s. For middle-class intellectuals, reeling under the shock of the panic of 1893 and the deep social discontents of the prolonged depression that followed, his prophecies of doom had a ring of truth. They were particularly suited to the morbid mood that overcame Henry Adams in the 1890’s. He wrote to C.M. Gaskell: “I am satisfied that Pearson is right, and that the dark races are gaining on us, as they have already done in Haiti, and are doing throughout the West Indies and our Southern States. In another fifty years, at the same rate of movement, the white races will have to reconquer the tropics by war and nomadic invasion, or be shut up, norther of the fortieth parallel.” Pearson’s fears are once again being heard echoing through Congress. Republicans realize that with the southern border being invaded by 20,000,000 illegal immigrants in the past four years, and national security being threated that is Donald Trump does not win the 2024 election, not only will they lose the nation, but it could also be the demise of the American Empire. The American Empire will have to fight for its existence. It will not gain or secure nor secure this existence by singing documents like that of The American Rescue Plan. However, for its existence and defence it will precisely need those things which our present system believes can be repudiated. The more worthy its form and its inner national being, the greater will be the envy and opposition of its adversaries. The best defence will not be in the arms it possesses but in its citizens. Bastions of fortresses will not save it, but the living wall of its men and women, filled with an ardent love for their country and a passionate spirit of national patriotism. #RandolphHarris 12 of 22

Americans must realize that the science may also be a means of promoting a spirit of pride in the nation. Not only the history of the World but the history of civilization as a whole must be taught in the light of this principle. An inventor must appear great not only as an inventor but also, and even more so, as a member of the nation. The admiration aroused by the contemplation of a great achievement must be transformed into a feeling of pride and satisfaction that a man of one’s own race has chosen to accomplish it. However, out of the abundance of great names in American history, the greatest will have to be selected and presented to our young generation in such a way as to become solid pillars of strength to support the national spirit. The spirit of nationalism and a feeling for social justice must be fused into one sentiment in the hearts of the youth. Then a day will come when a nation of citizens will arise which will be welded together through a common love and a common pride that shall be invincible and indestructible forever. The dread of chauvinism, which is a symptom of our time, is a sign of its impotence. Since our epoch not only lacks everything in the nature of exuberant energy but even finds such a manifestation disagreeable, fate will never elect it for the accomplishment of any great deeds. If they had not been inspired by ardent and even hysterical passions, the greatest changes that have taken place on this Earth would have been inconceivable, but only by the bourgeois virtues of peacefulness and order. #RandolphHarris 13 of 22

One thing is certain: our World is facing a great revolution. The only question is whether the outcome will be propitious for the American portion of mankind or whether the everlasting Democrat will profit by it. By educating the young generation along the right lines, the American Empire will have to see to it that a generation of mankind is formed which will be adequate to this supreme combat that will decide the destines of the World. That nation will conquer which will be the first to take this road. If they are allowed to go on, not only do certain life courses have predictable outcomes, but a certain dialogue of specific words spoken a certain way is necessary to establish the proper motivation for the outcome. In both the theater and in real life, the cues must be memorized and spoken exactly right so that other people will respond in a way that justifies and advances the action. If the hero changes his lines and his ego state, the other people respond differently. The two of them might then take off together instead of skulking around the castle—a bad play, but probably a better life. A script must be rehearsed and rewritten before it is ready for the most dramatic performance. In the theater there are readings, rewrites, rehearsals, and tryouts before the big time. A life script states off in childhood in a primitive form called the protocol. Here the other players are limited to parents, brothers, and sisters; or in an institution or foster home, to tablemates and those in charge. These all play their roles rather rigidly because every family is an institution, and the child does not learn much flexibility from them. #RandolphHarris 14 of 22

As he moves into adolescence, he begins to meet more people. He seeks out those who will play the roles his script requires (they will do it because he plays some role their scripts require). Currently, he rewrites his script to take account of his new environment. The basic plot remains the same, but the action is a little different. In most cases (except for adolescent suicide or murder), this is rehearsal—something like a small-town tryout. Through several such adaptations, he gets it into final form for the biggest production of all—the farewell performance, the final payoff on the script. If it is a “good” one, it takes place at a farewell dinner. If it is a “bad” one, he says good-by from a hospital bed, the door of a prison cell or psychiatric ward, the gallows, or the morgue. The whole organization of education and training which the American Empire is to build up must take as its crowing task the work of instilling into the hearts and brains of the youth entrusted to it the racial instinct and understanding of the racial idea. No boy or girl must leave school without having attained a clear insight into the meaning of patriotism and the importance of maintaining chastity unadulterated. Thus, the first indispensable condition for the preservation of our nation will have been established and thus the future cultural progress of our people will be assured. Almost every script has roles for “good guys” and “bad guys,” and for “winners” and “losers.” What is considered good or bad, and what is a winner or a loser, is something peculiar to each script, but it is noticeably clear that every script has these four characters, sometimes combined in two roles. #RandolphHarris 15 of 22

In a cowboy script, for example, the good guy is a winner, and the bad guy is a loser. Good means brave, quick on the draw, honest, and pure; bad may mean cowardly, slow on the draw, crooked, and interested in girls. A winner is someone who survives; a loser is hanged or gets shot. In a soap opera, a winner is a girl who gets a man; a loser is a girl who loses a man. In a paper-shuffle opera, the winner is the man who gets the best contract or the most proxies; a loser is a man who does not know how to shuffle papers. In script analysis, winners are called “princes” or princesses,” and losers are called “frogs.” The object of script analysis is to turn frogs into princes and princesses. To do this, the therapist has to find out who the good guys and the bad guys are in the patient’s script, and also what kind of a winner he can be. The patient fights being a winner because he is not in treatment for that purpose, but only to be made into a braver loser. This is natural enough, since if he becomes a braver loser, he can follow his script more comfortably, whereas if he becomes a winner, he must throw away all or most of his script and start over, which most people are reluctant to do. All scripts, whether in the theater or in real life, are essentially answers to the basic question of human encounter: “What do you say after you say Hello?” The Oedipal drama and the Oedipal life, for example, both hinges entirely on this question. Whenever Oedipus meets an older man, he first says Hello. The next thing he has to say, driven by his script, is: “Wanna fight?” If the older man say “No,” Oedipus has nothing further to say to him, and can only stand dumbly wondering whether to talk about the weather, the conduct of the current wars, or the terrible display on the Olympics mocking Christianity. #RandolphHarris 16 of 22

The easiest way out is to mumble “Pleased to meetcha,” “Si vales bene est, ego valeo,” or “Everything in moderation,” and go on his way. However, if the older one says “Yes,” Oedipus answers “Groovy!” because now he has found his man and he know what to say next. To conceptualize something is to fit it into a class. Such abstracting and classifying is essential in human existence, because it frees a person to act in service of needs once the person has classified what has just been perceived. If I classify a person over there as a woman, and a married woman at that, I act differently toward her than if I classify her as an unmarried woman. When we conceptualize, however, we “close down” our perception, and we no longer notice the continuing disclosure of the being in question. Once I identified someone as “Mother,” I assume I know her, know what to expect of mothers in general and of mine in particular. In fact, concepts of persons and things inevitably go out of date, because every person and everything is more than we presently believe to be the case’ and everything changes in time. My mother today is not identical with my mother yesterday. In self-analysis resistances express themselves in the same three ways, but with an inevitable difference. Clare’s self-analysis produced only once an open and direct resistance, but it produced a great deal of diversified inhibition toward the analytical work and much evasive maneuvering. Occasionally, Clare felt a conscious emotional reaction to her analytical findings—such as her shock at discovering her sponging attitude to loved ones—but such reactions did not prevent her further work. And I believe that this is a typical picture of the way resistances operate in self-analysis. At any rate, it is a picture that we might reasonably expect. #RandolphHarris 17 of 22

Emotional reactions to the findings are bound to occur: the person will feel apprehensive, ashamed, guilty, or irritated about what he discovers in himself. However, these reactions do not assume the proportions they do in professional analysis. One reason for this is that there is no analyst with whom he can engage in a defensive fight, or whom he can make responsible: he is thrown back upon himself. Another reason is that he usually dies with himself more gingerly than an analyst would: he will sense the danger far ahead and almost automatically shrink back from a straight approach, resorting instead to one or another means of avoiding the problem for the time being. What does the patient want? If he has serious symptoms such as psychogenetic headaches, or a wash compulsion, or if he suffers from impotence, he wants to be cured of his symptoms. This is what motivated most of Dr. Freud’s patients to seek analytic help. In general, it is not too difficult to cure such symptoms psychoanalytically and it is, if anything, an underestimation to assume that at least 50 percent of such patients are cured. However, in the last eighty years, these patients with symptoms no longer constitute the majority of those seeking the help of the psychoanalyst. An increasing number of people come who do not suffer from any “symptom” in the traditional sense, but who suffer from what the French called over a century and a half ago la maladie du siècle; they suffer from a general unhappiness, from lack of satisfaction in their work, from lack of happiness in their marriages, from the fact that “they are without joy in the midst of plenty,” to use a Biblical expression. #RandolphHarris 18 of 22

This new type of patient often seeks nothing but the relief which the psychoanalytic procedure can give, even when it is not successful; the satisfaction of having somebody to talk to, of “belonging” to a cult, having a “philosophy.” The aim of therapy is often that of helping the person to be better adjusted to existing circumstances, to “reality” as it is frequently called; mental health is often considered to be nothing but this adjustment or, to put it differently, a state of mind in which one’s individual unhappiness is reduced to the level of the general unhappiness. The real problem, of man’s loneliness and alienation, of his lack of a productive interest in life, need not even be touched in this type of psychoanalysis. The purpose of most helping professions, including guidance counseling, is to enhance the personal development, the psychological growth toward a socialized maturity, of its clients. The effectiveness of any member of the profession is most adequately measured in terms of the degree to which, in his work with his clients, he achieves this goal. Our knowledge of the elements which bring about constructive change in personal growth is in its infant stages. Such factual knowledge as we currently possess indicates that a primary change-producing influence is the degree to which the client experiences certain qualities in his relationship with his counselor. In a variety of clients—normal, maladjusted, and psychotic—with many different counselors and therapists, and studying the relationships from the vantage point of the client, the therapist, or the uninvolved observer, certain qualities in the relationship are quite uniformly found to be associated with personal growth and change. #RandolphHarris 19 of 22

These elements are not constituted of technical knowledge or ideological sophistication. They are personal human qualities—something the counselor experiences, not something he knows. Constructive personal growth is associated with the counselor’s realness, with his genuine and unconditional liking for his client, with his sensitive understanding of his client’s private World, and with his ability to communicate these qualities in himself to the client. These findings have some far-reaching implications for the theory and practice of guidance counseling and psychotherapy, and for the training of workers in these fields. Compassion is an emotion felt by one ego when considering the suffering condition of another ego. However, spiritual development eventually lifts itself above all emotions, by which I do not of course mean above all feeling. The wish to help another person should not spring out of compassion alone, nor out of the aspiration to do what is right alone, nor out of the satisfaction derived from practicing virtue for its own sake alone. It should certainly come out of all these, but it should also come even more out of the breaking down of the ego itself. With that gone, there will be a feeling of oneness with all living creatures. This practice of self-identification with them is the highest form of love. #RandolphHarris 20 of 22

The mission of the Sacramento Fire Department is to provide a sustainable quality of life for the entire Sacramento community. They achieve this by protecting and preventing the loss of life and property through professional and efficient planning, preparation, training, fire prevention, public education, and deliver of emergency services. “In my early days, I never realized the heat and the smoke conditions in a fire and the punishment the fellows take in there. And along with that was the damage. You see people’s treasures just absolutely destroyed. Again, when you have people burned and killed, it isn’t that detaching thing it was before you got involved. And seeing the teamwork of the men, it’s fantastic. I loved from a quiet engine company to the downtown district of Sacramento. Down there is where I grew on the job, because of the experience in various types of fire. We got everything from ships to grain elevators to high rises and warehouses, and slum housing. I thought it was great. The guys are certainly aware of the dangers and are safety conscious. Once you become an officer, you become even more acutely aware of it. It’s a different thing to go diving in yourself, from sending somebody else in there. And as you go higher in rank, you’re sending more and more people into danger. There are times when the responsibility is awesome. But of course, when you get to the scene of the fire, you are methodically thinking of different things, and it really doesn’t enter your mind. It’s in the back of your mind, but you can’t dwell on it. #RandolphHarris 21 of 22

“I’ve been to many funerals of friends of mine who were killed. You know that it can happen, you read about it all the time, but when it happens to a firefighter it’s just like a person in your family dying, completely unexpected, like possibly in an auto accident. You know it’s there, but you kind of think it isn’t going to happen to you. And when it does, it’s an awful blow. But I have it, the danger, really affect the job. I’ve never worried about it going to a fire, or worried about myself. When you come back, though, you kind of second-guess everything—should I have done this, what if that happened—and you learn that way.” Exceeding the needs and expectations of those they serve with the highest level of valor, integrity and commitment is what the Sacramento Fire Department is dedicated to doing. Please donate to the Sacramento Fire Department and you could save lives and property. They provide optimum prevention and protection to our community. There lives a God! Each finite creature proclaims His rule on sea and land; throughout all changing forms of nature is clearly shown His mighty hand. In every place is heard the call: The Lord of Host has made us all. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. Remember to raise your children to love America, to love God and Jesus Christ, to respect law and order, buy goods made in America, and be kind and respectful to everyone, especially their elders. There lives a God! #RandolphHarris 22 of 22

Joy is Virtuous and Sadness is Sinful

A leader is someone who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. If it is true that the policy of the arms race (controlled or not) will most likely result in thermonuclear war, and that, and if the “stable deterrent” could prevent such a war, the arms race will result in militarized, frightened, dictatorial societies, then the first condition for the possibility of peace and democracy supposedly is universal controlled disarmament. Even if the United States of American, India, Britain, France, Germany, China, and Japan were the only owners of nuclear weapons, this is believed by some to hold true. However, it is a lot like law enforcement making an agreement with known offenders that they both will disarm and so will everyone else. How likely is it that everyone involved will keep this agreement and what if someone who once had no use for arms or could not previously afford them decided to stock up? Well, someday Mexico and Africa, for instance, will have the capability and/or need to produce thermonuclear weapons and this will still further reduce the possibilities for peace. In discussing this danger of the “nth country” having nuclear weapons, small countries like Israel or Sweden could, of course, explode their thermonuclear bombs either by accident or because of the irrationality of their leaders, but they can hardly make their nuclear power part of their policy. The much greater danger lies in the extension of nuclear armament to other great powers, especially African and Mexico since those countries, like present members of the “atomic club,” would use their military power as an adjunct to their political ambitions. Thus the chance of nuclear war as a result of mutual threats in the context of such overall political strategy would be considerably enhanced. #RandolphHarris 1 of 19

How then can these powers like Africa and Mexico be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons? It is possible that even though these countries have made agreements not to produce nuclear weapons, if they decided that they would like the capabilities to produce them or deem them necessary, the United States of America and Russia could prevent these countries by economic or even military pressure from acquiring nuclear arms. However, this would mean a Russo-American alliance, directed against China (and Germany), which is most unlikely. It seems that the only way to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons to the other great countries is by global disarmament, in which all the great countries would participate. However, Western reaction to the disarmament proposal has been lukewarm. The West had not declined universal disarmament outright, but it has also never fully accepted it as a practical goal. The Russians, in their turn, are not willing to accept inspection by which they would lose one of their military advantages, namely the factor of secrecy, in exchanged for a limited “arms control” which would only be another form of prolonging the arms race. It is important under these circumstances to ask oneself why the West so far has not been willing to consider universal disarmament seriously. One stock answer which is usually given is that the Russian do not permit inspection. However, this answer is not tenable in view of the fact that they have repeatedly declared that they are willing to permit any kind of inspection provided the West accepts universal disarmament as the concrete and immediate goal; at least we must negotiate in order to find out if they are serious about inspection. #RandolphHarris 2 of 19

Furthermore, we must be aware of the fact that there is no foolproof system of inspection, but that the risks of an inspection system are smaller than those of the armament race. In considering the pros and cons of the inspection system, we must also give some weight to their contribution to an atmosphere of legality. In leading the Russians, Chinese, Germanys, Japanese and other members of the atomic club into the formal observance of agreed-upon rules—even if it is only a symbolic observance—we make it harder for either side to break the rules thereafter and flout the hopes for peace and legality that have been generated on all sides. Is it that we see less clearly than others the dangers of an atomically armed World, or is it that we are so caught in our picture of their “wish for World domination” that we can not believe that they mean what they say? Or is it that we are afraid that we could not cope with the economic consequences disarmament would have for our system? Or is it that the armed services, being opposed to disarmament, have already such power that they can prevent even a serious consideration of disarmament? Since this is a matter of life or death for the United States of America and the rest of the World, it would seem to be of the utmost importance to examine not only, as we usually do, the possible flaws in the other members of the atomic club’s posture, but also the possible reasons for our refusal to consider disarmament more seriously. However, keep in mind the Taiwan actually a secret nuclear program and after it was discovered, they abandoned it. Iran and Iraq also had secret nuclear programs at one time. Saudi Arabia has openly threatened to develop nuclear weapons if Iran successfully tests one and is rumoured to have a secret nuclear purchasing deal with Pakistan. Therefore, it is possible that one or more countries secretly have nuclear bombs already. #RandolphHarris 3 of 19

There is no way of victory over falsehood but by truth. To have victory over the ultimate negative as a liar, and over his lies, the believer must be determined always to know the truth and speak the truth about everything—in oneself, in others, and all around one. The ultimate negative the liar, through his lying spirits, persistently pours lies on the believer all day long: lies into one’s thoughts about oneself, one’s feelings, one’s condition, one’s environment; lies misinterpreting everything in oneself, and around one—about others with whom one is in contact; lies about the past and the future; lies about the ultimate concern; and lies about the ultimate negative himself, magnifying one’s power and one’s authority. To have victory over this persistent stream of lies from the father of lies, the believer must stand one’s ground with the weapon of God’s truth in the written Word, and with truth about facts in oneself, others, and circumstances. As the believer increasingly triumphs over the ultimate negative as a liar, one grows better able to discern one’s lies, and is equipped to strip away the covering for others. The interpretation of history necessarily leads to Christology and, conversely, this Christology must yield the interpretation of history. The interpretation of history is a search for meaning, and in Jesus the Christ is found the victory over meaninglessness. That Jesus as the Christ is the source of the meaning of history is expressed by the metaphour “center.” The center of history is the place where the meaning-given principle of history is seen. Since, according to its subject-object structure, history is not a purely objective temporal process, the center of history is not a point between a temporal beginning and end. Nor is the center of history the culmination point of a progressivistic development. #RandolphHarris 4 of 19

There is, however, a progressive element in the sense that the center of history is a moment in history for which everything before and after is both preparation and reception. The manifestation of the Kingdom of God is revelation, and this revelatory moment is prepared for by a movement from immaturity to maturity, for humankind had to mature to a point in which the center of history could appear and be received as the center. The Old Testament is the record of the maturing process which led to the final revelation in Jesus the Christ. The point to note, however, is that what happened once the process of original revelation happens again and again whenever the Christ is received as the center of history, regardless of time and place. The maturing or preparatory process toward the central manifestation of the Kingdom of God in history is, therefore not restricted to the pre-Christian epoch; it continues after the center’s appearance and is going on here and now. And just as there is an original history of preparation for the central revelation, so too there is an original history of reception which is the history of the church. The reception of revelation by the manifest church is clearly documented, but it must be borne in mind that the church is also latent, and the latent church receives revelation only by anticipation of the center. The historical dimension of Christology demonstrates that the appearance of Jesus as the Christ is the historical event in which history becomes aware of itself and its meaning. In determining the center of history, this allows history to be created. #RandolphHarris 5 of 19

Biophilic ethics have their own principle of good and evil. Good is all that serves life; evil is all that serves death. Good is reverence for life, all that enhances life, growth, unfolding. Evil is all that stifles life, narrows it down, cuts it into pieces. Joy is virtuous and sadness is sinful. Thus it is from the standpoint of biophilic ethics that the Christian Bible mentions as the central sin of the Hebrews: “Because thou didst not serve thy Lord with joy and gladness of heart in the abundance of all things” (Deuteronomy 28.47). The conscience of the biophilous person is not one of forcing oneself to refrain from evil and to do good. It is not the superego described by Dr. Freud, which is a strict taskmaster, employing sadism against oneself for the sake of virtue. The biophilous conscience is motivated by its attraction to life and joy; the moral effort consists in strengthening the life-loving side in oneself. For this reason the biophile does not dwell in remorse and guilt which are, after all, only aspects of self-loathing and sadness. One turns quickly to life and attempts to do good. Mr. Spinoza’s Ethic is a striking example of biophilic morality. “Pleasure,” he says, “in itself is not bad but good; contrariwise, pain in itself is bad.” And in the same spirit: “A free man thinks of death least of all things; and his wisdom is a meditation not of death but of life.” Love of life underlies the various versions of humanistic philosophy. In various conceptual forms these philosophies are in the same vein as Mr. Spinoza’s; they express the principle that the sane man loves life, that sadness is sin and joy is virtue, that man’s aim in life is to be attracted by all that is alive and to separate himself from all that is dead and mechanical. #RandolphHarris 6 of 19

The pure forms of the necrophilic and the biophilic orientations are, of course, rare. The pure necrophile is insane; the pure biophile is saintly. Most people are a particular blend of the necrophilous and the biophilous orientations, and what matters is which two trends is dominant. Those in whom the necrophilous orientation gains dominance will slowly kill the biophilic ide in themselves; usually they are not aware of their death-loving orientation; they will harden their hearts; they will act in such a way that their love of death seems to be the logical and rational response to what they experience. On the other hand, those in whom love for life still dominates, will be shocked when they discover how close they are to the “valley of the shadow of death,” and this shock might awaken them to life. Hence it is very important to understand not only how strong the necrophilic tendency is in a person, but also how aware one is of it. If one believes that one dwells in the land of life when in reality one lives in the land of death, one is lost to life since one has no chance to return. Dr. Freud discovered that certain circumscribed disorders that have no discernible organic basis—such as hysterical convulsions, phobias, depression, drug addictions, functional stomach upsets—can be cured by uncovering the unconscious factors that underlie them. In the course of time disturbances of this kind were summarily called neurotic. #RandolphHarris 7 of 19

Psychiatrist realized that neurotic people not only suffer from these manifest symptoms but also are considerably disturbed in all their dealings with life. And they also recognized the fact that many people have personality disorders without showing any of the definite symptoms that had previously been regarded as characteristic of neuroses. In other words, it gradually became more apparent that in neuroses symptoms may or may not be present but personality difficulties are never lacking. The conclusion was thus inevitable that these less specific difficulties constitute the essential core of neuroses. The recognition of this fact was exceedingly constructive in the development of psychoanalytical science, not only increasing its efficacy but also enlarging its scope. Manifest character disorders, such as a compulsive indecision, a repeated wrong choice of friends or lovers, gross inhibitions toward work, became as much an object of analysis as the gross clinical symptoms. If factors within an individual bar one from expression, the composer is flatly unable to work; one is unproductive. Similarly, a patient, despite one’s best intensions to be cooperative, becomes unproductive as soon as one’s efforts meet some “resistance.” However, the more frequent the period in which one is able to express oneself freely, the more one can tackle one’s own problems and the more significant is the common work of the patient and analyst. I have often told my patients that it would be ideal if the analyst merely played the part of a guide on a difficult mountain tour, indicating which way would be profitable to take or avoid. #RandolphHarris 8 of 19

To be accurate one should add that the analyst is a guide who is not too certain of the way oneself, because though experienced in mountain climbing he has not yet climbed this particular mountain. And this fact makes the patient’s mental activity and productivity all the more desirable. It is scarcely an overstatement that, apart from the analyst’s competence, it is the patient’s constructive activity that determines the length and outcome of analysis. The significance of the patient’s mental activity in analytical therapy is often revealed when an analysis has to be interrupted or terminated for some reason or other while the patient is still in a bad condition. Both patient and analyst are dissatisfied with the progress attained, but after some time has elapsed without further analysis, they may find themselves pleasantly surprised by the patient’s considerable and lasting improvement. If careful examination does not show any change in one’s circumstances that might account for the improvement, one may be justified in regarding it as a belated effect of analysis. Such an aftereffect, however, is not easy to account for. Various factors may contribute to it. The previous work may have enabled the patient to make such accurate self-observation that is convinced more deeply than before of the existence of certain disturbing trends, or is even able to discover new factors within oneself. Or it may be that one had regarded any suggestion made by the analyst as a foreign intrusion and that one can take hold of insights more easily when they re-emerge as one’s own findings. Or, if one’s trouble was a rigid need to be superior to others and to defeat them, one may have been incapable of giving the analyst the satisfaction of doing successful work, and thus be able to recover only when the analyst is out of the picture. Finally, it must be remembered that delayed reactions occur also in many other situations: only much later may we grasp the real meaning of a joke or a remark made in a conversation. #RandolphHarris 9 of 19

Different as these explanations are they all point in one direction: they suggest that some mental activity must have gone on in the patient without one being aware of it, or at least without consciously determined effort. That such mental activities, and even meaningful directed activities, do occur without awareness we know from the existence of meaningful dreams and from such experiences as being balked by a task in the evening and knowing the solution after awakening from sleep. Not only is there the famous mathematical problem, of which the solution presents itself in the morning, but a decision befogged in the evening may be clarified after having “slept” over it. A resentment not even perceived in daytime may have worked itself though to awareness so keenly that we awake suddenly at five o’clock in the morning, clearly recognizing provocation and reaction. As a matter of fact, every analyst relies on the operation of these underground mental activities. Such reliance is implicit in the doctrine that an analysis will proceed satisfactorily if the “resistances” are removed. I should like to stress also the positive aspect: the stronger and the less hampered a patient’s incentive toward liberation, the more productive activity will one display. However, whether one emphasize the negative aspect (resistance) or the positive one (incentive), the underlying principle is the same: by removing obstacles or by eliciting sufficient incentive the patient’s mental energy will be set to work and one will produce the material that will eventually lead to some further insight. If the analyst relies on the patient’s unconscious mental activity, if the patient has the faculty to work alone toward the solution of some problem, could this faculty be utilized in a more deliberate fashion? Could the patient scrutinize one’s self-observations or one’s associations with one’s own critical intelligence? #RandolphHarris 10 of 19

Usually there is a division of labour between patient and analyst. By and large, the patient lets one’s thoughts, feelings, and impulses emerge, and the analyst uses one’s critical intelligence to recognize what the patient is driving at. One questions the validity of statements, one put together seemingly disconnected material, one makes suggestions as to possible meanings. I said “by and large” because the analyst uses also one’s intuition and the patient, too, may tie things together. However, on the whole such a division of labour exists, and it has definite advantages for the analytical session. It enables the patient to relax and merely express or register whatever emerges. However, what about the day or the days between the analytical sessions? What about longer interruptions that occur for various reasons? Why leave it to accident that some problem will inadvertently clarify itself? Would it not be possible to encourage the patient not only to make deliberate and accurate self-observations but also to arrive at some insight by using one’s power of reasoning? Granted it would be a hard job fraught with hazards and limitations—which will be discussed later—these difficulties should not prevent us from raising the question: is it impossible to analyze oneself? We know, particularly since Dr. Freud’s basic findings, that the task is infinitely more intricate and difficult than the ancients ever imagined—so difficult, indeed, that it is like an adventure into the unknown merely to raise the question seriously. All suggestions that say it is an easy matter to recognize oneself are an illusion. These suggestions are beliefs built on wishing thinking, and a positively harmful illusion at that. #RandolphHarris 11 of 19

People who embark on that promised easy road will either acquire a false smugness, believing they know all about themselves, or will become discouraged when they are blocked by the first serious obstacle and will tend to relinquish the search for truth as a bad job. Neither result will happen so easily if one is aware that self-analysis is a strenuous, slow process, bound to be painful and upsetting at times and requiring all available constructive energies. One can free oneself from one’s difficulties only when re-experiencing one’s infantile desires, fears, and attachments in relation to the analyst; left to one’s own devices the patient could at best reach ineffective, “merely intellectual” insights. If arguments such as this were scrutinized in detail, they would ultimately boil down to a disbelief that the patient’s incentive is strong enough to enable one to overcome by oneself the obstacles littering the road to self-recognition. The patient’s incentive to arrive at some goal is an important factor in every analysis. One may safely say that an analyst cannot bring the patient any further than the patient oneself wants to go. In an analysis, however, the patient has the advantage of the analyst’s help, one’s encouragement, one’s guidance. If the patient is left to one’s own resources the matter of incentive becomes crucial—so crucial, indeed, that the feasibility of self-analysis hinges on its strength. Dr. Freud, of course, recognized that manifest gross suffering under neurotic problems may provide such an incentive. However, apparently he felt at a loss to account for an incentive if gross suffering has never existed or has disappeared during treatment. #RandolphHarris 12 of 19

Dr. Freud suggested that the patient’s “love” for the analyst might provide an additional incentive, provided this “love” does not aim at a concrete sexual satisfaction but is contented with receiving and utilizing the analyst’s help. This sounds plausible. We must not forget, however, that in every neurosis the ability to love is greatly impaired, and that what appears as such is mostly the result of the patient’s excessive need for affection and approval. It is true that there are patients—and I supposed Dr. Freud has them in mind—who go to considerable lengths to please the analyst, including a willingness to accept interpretations more or less uncritically and including also an attempt to show improvement. Effort of this type, however, are not prompted by “love” for the analyst, but represent the patient’s means of allaying one’s lurking fear of people and in a broader sense of one’s way of coping with life, for one feels helpless to do it in a more self-reliant manner. In consequence, this motivation to do good work depend entirely on the relation with the analyst. A soon as the patient feels rejected or criticized—as this type does easily—one will lose sight of one’s own interest, and psychoanalytical work then then becomes the battlefield for the patient’s spite and vengeance. Almost more important than the unreliability of this incentive: the analyst has to discourage it. The tendency to do things merely because someone else expects it, regardless of one’s wishes, is a considerable source of trouble to the patient; therefore it has to be analyzed, not utilized. Thus the only effective incentive that Dr. Freud rightly asserted, does not carry far because it is bound to diminish in exact proportion with a decrease of symptoms. #RandolphHarris 13 of 19

Still, this incentive might suffice if a removal of symptoms were the only goal of analysis. However, is it? Dr. Freud never expressed unambiguously his view of these goals. To say that a patient should become capable of work and enjoyment is not meaningful without a qualification of both capacities. Capable of routine work or of creative work? Capable of enjoying pleasures of the flesh or life in general? To say that analysis should constitute a re-education is likewise vague without an answer to the question, education for what? Probably Dr. Freud did not give this question much thought because from his earliest to his latest writings he was primarily interested in the removal of neurotic symptoms; he cared about change of personality only in so far as it would guarantee a permanent cure of symptoms. Dr. Freud’s goal is this essentially to be defined in a negative manner: gaining “freedom from.” Other authors, however, including myself, would formulate the goal of analysis in a positive way: by rendering a person free from inner bondages make one free for the development of one’s best potentialities. This may sound like a mere difference in emphasis, but, even if it were nothing but that, the different emphasis suffices to alter the matter of incentive entirely. To set the goal in the positive fashion has a realistic value if there is in the patient an incentive, sufficiently powerful to be reckoned with, to develop whatever faculties one has, to realize given potentialities, to come to grips with oneself despite all the ordeals one may have to go through at times; to put it in the simplest way possible, if there is an incentive to grow. #RandolphHarris 14 of 19

When the issue is stated thus plainly it is clear that there is more involved here than a difference in emphasis, because Dr. Freud emphatically denied that such a wish exists. He even scoffed at it, as if the positing of such a wish were a sort of hollow idealism. He pointed out that urges toward self-development emanate from “narcissistic” desires, that is, they represent a tendency toward self-inflation and toward excelling others. Dr. Freud rarely made a postulate merely for the love of theoretical considerations. At bottom there was almost always some astute observation. In this instance it is the observation that tendencies toward self-aggrandizement are sometimes a forceful element in the wish for self-development. What Dr. Freud refused to recognize is that fact that this “narcissistic” element is a contributing factor only. If the need for self-aggrandizement has been analyzed and abandoned, the wish to develop still remains, yes, it emerges more clearly and powerfully than before. The “narcissistic” elements, while they have kindled the wish to grow, have at the same time hampered its realization. To use the words of a patient: “The ‘narcissistic’ impulse is toward the development of a phony self.” The fostering of this phony self is always at the expense of the real self, the latter being treated with disdain, at best like a poor relation. My experience is that the more the phony self evaporates, the more the real self becomes invested with interest and the more unbridled an incentive emerges to unfold by becoming free from internal bondage, to live as full a life as given circumstances permit. It seems to me that the wish for developing one’s energies belongs among those striving that defy further analysis. #RandolphHarris 15 of 19

Hospitals and clinics are stretched well beyond their capacity to treat patients who need mental health care, according to new federal data—utilizing 144 percent of impatient beds designated for psychotic treatment. How many psychiatric patients are there in the United State of America? 60 million. There are at least 1 million patients housed in public and private mental hospitals at any given time. There are approximately 350,000 new admissions annually to public institutions for custodial care of psychiatrically ill persons. Of the total number of patients admitted to state hospitals each year, nearly one third are patients who are entering such hospitals for at least the second time. Some people believe that in addition to more affordably housing units, that there also need to be assisted living units for people with severe mental disabilities because traditional employees are not trained to deal with people with mental issues as rental apartments are for self-sustained adults, it is not supposed to be an outflow for mental hospitals or jails. For some people, these affordable housing apartments could be a trap. Due to the fact that some of the staff and administrators are mentally ill and criminals, and there are deadly code violations that are ignored, this could be the first and last home for some people. Then the administrators are given an indefinite timeline to fix the danger in these apartments, and they will have the media highlight the homeless crisis, as if they are saying, “at least we got them off of the streets.” However, not all of these people came from bad situations, some came from good homes and are just starting out and did not want to make a career out of living in low-income housing. Some of these places literally abuse tenant and threaten them. Such facts impress upon us the size of the problem in respect to the sheer number of persons who require hospitalization. They imply to us the tremendous economic costs that are involved—in terms of the expense of the custody and care of the patients, and in terms of the loss to our economy entailed in their incapacitation as productive citizens. These data state clearly the position of mental illness as our nation’s paramount health problem. The facts do not and cannot convey in themselves, to even the most sensitive and imaginative of persons, the true dimensions of hurt and loss experienced by these thousands upon thousands of psychological invalids. #RandolphHarris 16 of 19

Statistics which are intended to bring precision to descriptive communication fail utterly when the essential subject is suffering. Human misery does not yield to quantification. One can make a census of the bodies of patients, but the psychic pain and emotional torment of one patient is not additive to that of another. When men and women are bereft of reason, tyrannized by emotion, or reduced to vegetative automatism, their summering does not permit of numeration. Really to know such suffering at all, short of experiencing it ourselves, we must see it directly. We must visit a mental hospital; we must see the faces of patient after patient; we must observe the daily routine of their mechanical existence; we must ask where they came from, how long they have been here, what tomorrow promises for them; and then, we must think that these are but a very few. These lives of monotonous melancholy and empty euphoria are multiplied one million-fold. Perhaps then we approach the true magnitude of the pathology. And if we succeed in capturing a full vision of the suffering stemming from mental disorder, it is for a brief instant only. Protective forgetting guards us from the distress of constant awareness of these isolated mentally ill ones. At home again, surrounded by the small pleasure and large pursuits of our existence, we do not remind ourselves of what we saw or thought; we do not bring up painful images of the human deprivation we observed. Newspapers, magazines, radio, and television carry programs designed to inform the public with regard to the massive enigma of mental illness and to exhort our interests and efforts in campaigns to increase funds or improve facilities. Our attention may be momentarily arrested by a statement that one out of every 30 individuals who live to be 85 years of age will have spent some period of one’s life in a mental hospital, but such a statement does not nourish the persistent questioning attitude that comes through personal acquaintance with a single patient. #RandolphHarris 17 of 19

Suppose that an embodied will to contradiction and counternature is brough to philosophize—on what will it unleash its inner willfulness? On whatever it experiences most certainly as true, as real: it will seek error precisely where the real vital instinct finds truth most unconditionally. It will, for example, like the ascetics of Vedanta philosophy, disparage bodily being as illusion, likewise pain, plurality, the entire conceptual opposition of “subject” and “object”—errors, nothing but errors! Renouncing belief in its I, denying its own “reality”: what a triumph!—and not just over the senses, over appearances, but a far greater kind of triumph, a violation and a cruelty to reason: this lustfulness reaches its peak when the ascetic self-contempt, self-ridicule of reason decrees, “There is a realm of truth and being, but reason is barred from it!” (Incidentally, even in the Kantian concept of the “intelligible character of things” there is still a remnant of this lascivious ascetic discord that loves to turn reason against reason: “intelligible character” in Mr. Kant means a kind of constitution of things of which the intellect comprehends just this much, that it is for the intellect—utterly incomprehensible.) Finally, let us not be ungrateful we knowers, for such resolute reversals of customary perspectives and valuations with which the spirit has so wickedly and so uselessly ravaged itself for so long: to see differently like this for once, to want to see differently, is no small cultivation and preparation of the intellect for its eventual “objectivity”—the latter understood not as “disinterested contemplation” (which is incoherent and nonsense) but as the ability to hinge and unhinge and to hold sway over its pro and con, so that one knows how to make the very diversity of perspective and affective interpretations useful for knowledge. #RandolphHarris 18 of 19

Henceforth, my dear philosophers, let us guard against the dangerous old conceptual fiction that posited a “pure, will-less, painless, timeless subject of knowledge”; let us guard against the snares of such contradictory concepts as “pure reason,” “absolute spirit,” “knowledge in itself”; for this always demands thinking of an eye that would have no direction at all, in which the active and interpretive forces—through which, after all, seeing first becomes seeing something—are to be disabled, are to be lacking; here, what is demanded of the eye is always something nonsensical and incoherent. There is only perspectival seeing, only perspectival “knowing”; and the more affects we bring to expression about any one thing, the more eyes—different eyes—we know how to bring to bear on the same thing, the more complete will be our “concept” of that thing, our “objectivity.” To eliminate will altogether, though, to suspend the affects, one and all, supposing we could do it—what would that not mean castrating the intellect? May the day soon dawn, we pray, that day of liberty, when every shackle forged by man is loosed to set one free, when serfdom’s yoke is broken, every politician and TV news media person is humbled low, when humans shall take their brother’s hand and lovingkindness show, and all are free to worship Thee and to Thy Law adhere. Then nevermore the wanderer’s staff, and nevermore the sowrd, o may we never weary grown and may we never cease to work for such a blessed World where humans shall be at peace. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic, for which it stands, one nation under God with liberty and justice for all. May we always know the sweet delights of liberty. #RandolphHarris 19 of 19

Dining rooms are perhaps the best evidence of the revolution that took place in society in the middle of the nineteenth century. The Industrial Revolution not only made all the furniture, dishes, and silver plate possible, but also created a new class of people to use them. Early in the nineteenth century, the existence of a dining room at all was the mark of gentry. Ordinary folk cooked and ate and lived in all-purpose rooms. The landed gentry of the South and the merchant shippers of the North might boast a separate room just for eating, but they represented only a very call part of the population. By 1860, a separate dining room was considered de rigueur for even a cottage, and eating “in the kitchen” was thought of as rustic and rude. Middle-class people could even aspire to a sideboard in the dining room, by far the most expensive piece of furniture in the house.

In the Venetian Dining Room at the Winchester Mystery House, there have been reports of an unusual figure. It is described as resembling a tall man in a hat, and his presence was attested by numerous letters written to the estate complimenting them on the authentic ghost. Here are some of the extracts from a range of correspondence: “My husband spotted a most unusual form about a year ago. It just seemed to glide across the floor. I am glad someone else has spotted it.” “To my understanding the ghost always takes the form of a pale figure and has been appearing for several years.” “Suddenly from the corner of my eye, I saw something move which seemed to be walking towards us from the table, and sent us running into the gift shop as fast as we could.” “My advice is to avoid the Winchester Mystery House during dark evenings, if at all possible.”

Holy Alliance

Respect. Learning how to respect begins with learning how to listen. To those who have followed the argument about the conservative nature of the Russian system and about the threat to Russia as well as to the United States of America by the Asian, African, and Latin American revolutions under the leadership of China, it will not sound too unreasonable to propose another way to peace that may enjoy increasing the favour in the near future. Why should not Russia and the United States of America be able to form a close military and political alliance, force the Chinese government (by the threat of nuclear attack) to accept disarmament, prevent the smaller states (also if necessary by force) from acquiring thermonuclear weapons, and organize the Word under American-Russian domination? (It would not matter whether this American-Russian domination of the World were called World Government, United Nations, or whatever.) This idea may be tempting to some military and political leaders both in Russian and in the United States of America, because it is an essentially conservative idea, it leaves the power in the hands of the military groups, and it does not require any basic change in the American or the Russian systems. Yet, I believe this solution is most undesirable and, what is more important, practically impossible. It is undesirable because it would mean the establishment of a most reactionary World dictatorship exercised by the two greatest powers. #RandolphHarris 1 of 17

Such a dictatorship would have to curb all revolutionary movements among the Asian, African, and Latin American peoples, and hence it would have to build a dictatorial police system in order to stop a historical process, which in the long run can not be stopped by force. Such a system might save the World from immediate nuclear war, but since by its very nature it would require a fully armed United States of America and Russia, it could hardly prevent the outbreak of war eventually, when Russian-American confidence will have worn thin. There is, however, hardly any need to consider the advantages and disadvantages of such a new “holy alliance,” because it is clearly unacceptable to Russia. Not primarily because it would be too difficult for Russia to change its ideological position so drastically that there would be no visible break. This could be done by accusing China of having betrayed communism, et cetera, and “proving” why the “peace-loving” circles in the United States of America are to be preferred to the “adventurist” elements in China who want to start a World war with the aim of World domination by China; to take this line would be difficult, but not impossible. However, the reason why a United States of America-Russian Union “holy-alliance” seems impossible lies not in the field of ideas, but in that of political facts. While Russia today feels menaced by an ever-growing China, her position vis-à-vis the West is nevertheless greatly strengthened by the existence of China and by the strength of the colonial peoples. #RandolphHarris 2 of 17

If Russia were to give up her role as an ally of China and as the spokesman for the aspirations of colonial peoples, she would face the combined American-Western European alliance alone and without support, and would have to fear that her “allies” would attack Russia after China and the colonial peoples had been disarmed. For these reasons it seems quite clear that such an alliance is unacceptable to the Russians, and hence is not a feasible possibility for peace. The ending of the cold war can bring about a greater independence of Russia from her Chinese ally, but all attempts to split the two powers and to break the alliance will be repelled by the Russians for reasons of sheer survival. Many people dismiss Africa as an economic superpower. However, there are ongoing efforts toward regional integration of the whole of African uniting. The African Union (AU), through its eight Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and its Agenda 2063, offers blueprints for these possibilities. The African continent is not monolithic; its 54 countries are characterized by diverse cultures, languages, landscapes, and colonial pasts. African has an abundance of valuable natural resources, (exempli gratia, oil, uranium, copper, gold, cobalt, and cast uninhabited land) and a large entrepreneurial, tech-savvy youth base. Huge disparities in wealth and income also characterize the continent. #RandolphHarris 3 of 17

Furthermore, Africa has great potential and could become the next economic frontier. It is home to some of the World’s current fastest-growing economies; its population is also expected to grow by 184 percent and increase to 2.1 billion by 2050. Africa has immense resources, key sea connections, and potential for economic expansion. The diversity of the continent, both in terms of its people and its wealth, has attracted the World’s superpowers. Africa still need financial resources, armed force, and more international clout to become a superpower. However, Africa is gaining momentum. Africa will be home to 42 percent of the World’s youth in 2030 (the continent will benefit from the demographic dividend caused by the additional population growth rate). Moreover, by 2050, 25 percent of the World’s population will come from Africa. It is somewhat astonishing that the birthrate is 1.24 in Italy, a highly developed European nation, but 5.31 in Nigeria, a West African nation. The war to rule Africa pits the present superpowers against one another. Africa can also be carried long by the tide of economic progress, similar to how China has done over the past 40 years; thanks to its abundant human resources. The path to an export-oriented economy opens for a nation when its enormous labour force can be transformed into competent human resources while also being made available at competitive wages. This is precisely what occurred in 1978 in China. Large businesses throughout the World are now looking for new locations where they can operate inexpensively, even though the wages of workers in China have climbed several times in the past several years. #RandolphHarris 4 of 17

Mexico thus became a significant marker for America. The factories of large American companies are being relocated from China to Mexico. In addition to competitive labour, security, and integrity are also important. It is crucial to remember that, except for South Africa, no other African nations have experienced industrialization. Over 60 percent of people in Africa still solely rely on agriculture. Because people are accessible there at reasonable wages, the largest businesses in the World can establish a presence there. The superpowers are investing billions of dollars in Africa because it still lacks the solid institutional framework and robust economy that were anticipated. About $300 billion has been invested in Africa, primarily by China. For the sake of defending its interest Beijing has never questioned the legitimacy of democracy or the state of human rights in African nations. In that area, China has constructed 100,000 km of roadways, 13,000 km of railways, 1,000 bridges, and 100 ports. About 10,000 Chinese businesses are operating in Africa. As a result, China’s commercial activity with Africa surged from 2021 to 2022 by 11 percent, reaching about $282 billion. This continent has been transformed into a market for Chinese goods. India is also attempting to develop investments there as a challenger to China. #RandolphHarris 5 of 17

Additionally, Turkey collaborates with Muslim nations in Africa. Russia’s influence over the continent is growing along with everything else. The involvement of African nations in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine is a clear indicator of Russian influence in Africa. Russia’s resurgence as a dominant player in Africa has raised significant concerns about the nature of its involvement and the motivations driving its activities on the continent. Amid the evolving landscape of global influence, Russia’s presence in Africa is becoming increasingly pronounced, yet its intentions appear to echo a pattern of resources exploitation rather than a genuine commitment to sustainable development or partnership. One striking example of Russia’s expanding influence in Africa is the intricate web of connections it has established with various governments and non-state actors. The insidious connection between Russia and coup leaders, as seen in Niger, illustrate a concern willingness to support undemocratic regimes that serve Moscow’s interest. In Niger’s case, the overthrow of a democratically elected president in favour of leader sympathetic to Russia’s resources demands presents a disheartening reality: the erosion of democratic norms in favour of opportunistic resource extraction. The exploitation of mineral resources is a cornerstone of Russia’s approach to Africa. The Wagner Group, a shadowy private military organization with alleged links to the Russian government, has been at the forefront of securing mining rights in Sudan and other countries. #RandolphHarris 6 of 17

To manage its operations in the African nation, the private military group established Meroe Gold, a Prigozhin-controlled business that was subsequently sanction by the USA. It soon started looking into Sudan’s gold resources. As a result, Wagner started to establish ties with General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, and his paramilitary RSF. Locals in Al-Ibadyia said that RSF members protected Russian businessmen looking to purchase gold from miners. Additionally, it is reported that a number of RSF paramilitaries who collaborate closely with Russian security officers thought to be from the Wagner Group guarded the Russian-owed gold processing facility. This raises concerns about the transparency and ethics surrounding these resource deals. The Wagner Group’s involvement highlights a broader strategy that revolves around leveraging political instability to secure lucrative contracts, often to the detriment of local populations and sustainable development. While President Vladimir Putin has masterfully portrayed Russia as Africa’s new partner, the reality remains clouded by opportunism. Mr. Putin’s public diplomacy campaigns and high-profile engagements mask the underlying motives of Russian interests. This rebranding effort serves as a smokescreen for the pursuit of strategic resources and geopolitical influence, harkening back to the era of colonial powers that sought to exploit Africa for their own gains. The African Nuclear-Weapon-Free-Zone (ANWFZ) Treaty of Pelindaba established the African continent as a Nuclear-Weapons-Free-Zone. Thus South African ended its nuclear weapons programme in 1989. #RandolphHarris 7 of 17

By 2050, the top ten economies will be China, India, USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Japan, Germany, and UK. In fact, by 2050, the global market is projected to double its current size, even as UN forecasts the World’s population will only grow by a modest 26 percent. This growth will bring with it plenty of changes. Though it can be challenging to predict exactly how the future will unfold, most economist agree on one thing: today’s developing markets will be tomorrow’s economic superpowers. With a clear path in technology development, Mexico aspires to become a technological superpower Worldwide. Technology occupies an essential place to enhance the economy and development opportunities in Mexico. The capacity and talent of Mexican programmers generated innovation and gave rise to a new economy, largely driven by the employment relationships started with technologies in the United States of America. The Mexican programming community has become one of the most sought after by USA companies for technology-related positions. In Mexico there is a lot of talent and a desire to progress. The programmers are of a high standard, trained and competent, making the best candidates to be part of any technology development team. This new reality shows us an evolution, and a significant and promising paradigm shift, regarding professional relations between Mexico and the United States of America. #RandolphHarris 8 of 17

Now American companies see the country as a source of resources, as a vital ally for their activities and economic development, and, above all, as a region of programmer talent for technology startups. By 2050, Mexico is poised to become the World’s seventh-largest economy, jumping in the rankings. A focus on manufacturing and exports have driven much of its growth in recent years, though current economic conditions have hampered potential gains. Healthcare and transportation are notably more affordable in Mexico than they are in the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico. As with many developing economies, infrastructure and road conditions can be challenging, but the government just unveiled a $44 billion infrastructure investment to be spent over the next for years. There are currently 130 million citizens in Mexico. Mexico is one of the few countries possessing the technical capability to manufacture nuclear weapons. However, it has renounced them and has pledged to only use its nuclear technology for peaceful purposes following the Treaty of Tlatelolco in 1967. In 2002, India’s government launched a ubiquitous international tourism campaign known as “Incredible India.” Not just enthusiasts within the country, but a chorus of global analysts, have declared India as the next great economic power. By 2050, India’s purchasing power will be 30 percent larger than that of the United States of America. By 2030, India’s working-age population is expected to be 1.04 billion with a dependency ratio to be the lowest in its history at 31.2 percent, contributing just under a quarter of the incremental global workforce. The working-age population bulge is expected to last till 2055. #RandolphHarris 9 of 17

India’s financial markets are in a better state than ever before. With the China opportunities cooling, investors need alternative, and India comes closet. The MSCI India Index is up 12 percent this year, compared to 2 percent for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index. Bank balance sheets are stronger and credit markets are functioning well. It is telling that many Indian banks are valued higher than U.S.A. peers. HDFC Bank—which merged with its parent, mortgage lender HDFC—has a market capitalization of $171 billion, making it the 4th largest financial company in the World. Even before the merger, the 29-year-old upstart was more valuable than the 154-year-old Goldman Sachs. The change can be seen even in the traditionally underfinanced informal sector, comprising over 86 percent of India’s workforce. Avendus, a leading Indian investment bank, calculate that Indian small-and-medium-enterprise sector’s total demand of debt is $1.5 trillion. Of this, $725 billion is unaddressable because of lack o collateral, and formal credit is only available to the tune of $289 billion. This is motivating lenders to deepen their offerings. New-to-credit customers are at 34 percent up from 9 percent of customers for small business lenders in 2017. Loans by small business lenders have jumped 43 percent annually in the past two years. #RandolphHarris 10 of 17

A critical barrier that sticks in the mind of anyone who has visited India is its lagging infrastructure. Historically, investing in handouts may have been more politically expedient, but the current administration’s popularity gives it greater leeway to invest in infrastructure. Capita expenditure as a percentage of total government expenditure has increased from 11 percent in 2010 to a projected 22 percent this year. Infrastructure expenditure this year will see a 33 percent hike to $122 billion. The outcomes have been striking. India has been adding 10,000 km of highway annually. Since 2014, the number of Indian airports has doubled and an upgraded train system will have new high efficiency “freight corridors” connecting the economic center of India. In addition, one of the most distinctive changes has been in the digital infrastructure. With 881.25 million Internet subscribers, India has the second-highest Internet-enabled population in the World behind China’s 1.05 billion. Riding on this access, there is a digital public infrastructure—a model being studied by other countries—that combines a population-scale unique identity system, a payment interface that makes digital payments seamless, and a data management system, whereby citizens can access essential documents online, such as tax documents, vaccination certificates, et cetera. All of this helps make public services and credit more easily accessible to a wider swath of the population. India has a goal of producing 20 million iPhones a year, 50,000 new jobs will be created by one such project alone. #RandolphHarris 11 of 17

In addition, when it comes to military-grade technology used for space launches, there is greater confidence in India as a host than China and there is already a thriving ecosystem in place. India has hosted 111 international space launches since 2020, and successfully landed a rover on the moon in late August. India possesses approximately 164 nuclear weapon, which it can launch from missiles and, mostly aircraft. It may also be able to launch them from submarines. India conducted a total of three nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998. In 2022, India spent an estimated $2.7 billion to build and maintain its nuclear forces. Now, the opposite of the necrophilous orientation is the biophilous; its essence is love of life in contrast to love of death. Like necrophilia, biophilia is not constituted by a single trait, but represents a total orientation, an entire way of being. It is manifested in a person’s bodily processes, in one’s emotions, in one’s thoughts, in one’s gestures; the biophililous orientation expresses itself in the whole being. The most elementary form of this orientation is expressed in the tendency of all living organisms to live. In contrast to Dr. Freud’s assumption concerning the “death instinct,” I agree with the assumption made by many biologists and philosophers that it is an inherent quality of all living substance to live, to preserve its existence; as Mr. Spinoza expressed it: “Everything insofar as it is itself, endeavours to persist in its own being.” He called this endeavor the very essence of the thing in questions. #RandolphHarris 12 of 17

We observe this tendency to live in all living substances around us; in the grass that breaks through the stones to get light and to live; in the animal that will fight to the last in order to escape death; in humans who will do almost anything to preserve their lives. The tendency to preserve life and to fight against death is the most elementary form of the biophilous orientation, and is common to all living substances. Inasmuch as a tendency to preserve life and to fight death, it represents only one aspect of the drive toward life. The other aspect is a more positive one: living substance has the tendency to integrate and to unite; it tends to fuse with different and opposite entities, and to grow in a structural way. Unification and integrated growth are characteristic of all life processes, not only as far as cells are concerned, but also with regard to feeling and thinking. The most elementary expression of this tendency is the fusion between cells and organisms, from non-sexual cell fusion to sexual union among animals and humans. In the latter sexual union is based on the attraction between male and the female poles. The male-female polarity constitutes the core of that need for fusion on which the life of the human species depends. It seems that for this very reason nature has provided man with the most intense pleasure in the fusion of the two poles. Biologically, the result of this fusion is normally the creation of a new being. The cycle of life is the of union, birth and growth—jut as the cycle of death is that of cessation of growth, disintegration, decay. #RandolphHarris 13 of 17

However, even the sexual instinct, while biologically serving life, is not necessarily one which psychologically expressed biophilia. It seems that there is hardly any intense emotion which cannot be attracted to and blended with the sexual instinct. Vanity, the desire for wealth, for adventure, and even the attraction to death can, as it were, commission the sexual instinct into their service. Why this should be so is a matter for speculation. One is tempted to think that it is the cunning of nature to make the sexual instinct so pliable that it will be mobilized by any kind of intense desire, even by those which are in contradiction to life. However, whatever the reason, the fact of the blending between sexual desire and destructiveness can hardly be doubted. (Dr. Freud pointed to this mixture, especially in his discussion of the blending of the death instinct with the life instinct, as occurring in sadism and masochism.) Sadism, masochism, necrophagia, and coprophagia, and coprophagia are perversions, not because they deviate from the customary standards of sexual behaviour, but precisely because they signify the one fundamental perversion: the blending between life and death. The full unfolding of biophilia is to be found in the productive orientation. The person who fully loves life is attracted by the process of life and growth in all spheres. One prefers to construct rather than to retain. One is capable of wondering, and one prefers to see something new to the security of finding confirmation of the old. One loves adventure of living more than one does certainty. #RandolphHarris 14 of 17

One’s approach to life is functional rather than only the parts, structures rather than summations. One wants to mold and to influence by love, reason, by one’s example; not by force, by cutting things apart, by the bureaucratic manner of administering people as if they were things. One enjoys life and all its manifestations rather than mere excitement. An ascetic life is a self-contradiction: a ressentiment rules here without equal that of an insatiable instinct and will to power, wanting to be master not of something in life but of life itself, of its deepest, strongest, most primal conditions; here, an attempt is made to use force to stop up the wellspring of force; here, physiological thriving itself I viewed with envy and derision, especially its expression, beauty, joy; while pleasure is sensed and sought in deformity, atrophy, pain, accident, the ugly, the self-inflicted wound, self-denial, self-flagellation, self-sacrifice. This is all paradoxical in the highest degree: here, we stand before a discord that wants to bediscordant, that enjoys itself in this suffering and becomes ever more self-confident and triumphant to the extent that its own presupposition, its own physiological capacity for life, diminished. Triumph in the final agony itself: the ascetic ideal has hitherto fought under this superlative banner; in this riddle of seduction, in this image of delight and torment it recognizes its brightest light, its salvation, its final victor. Crux, nux, lux—it in, these three are one. #RandolphHarris 15 of 17

The ultimate negative is a liar; “He was a murderer from the beginning, and stood not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speakteth a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and the father thereof” reports John 8.44. This does not mean that the enemy never tells the truth, but his truth has the objective of getting the believer involved in psychopathology; exempli gratia, when the spirit of divination spoke the truth that Paul and Silas were the servants of God, it was to suggest the lie that Paul and Silas derived their power from the same source as the girl under the evil spirit’s power. The ultimate negative and his wicked spirits will speak, or use, ninety-nine parts of truth to float one lie, but Paul was not deceived by the witness of a soothsaying prophetess acknowledging their divine authority. He discerned the wicked spirit and its purpose, exposed it, and cast it out. Even so must the believer be able to triumph over Satan as a liar, and be able to recognize his lies, and those of lying spirits, in whatever form they are presented to one. This one does by knowing the truth, and using the weapon of truth. The manifestation of the Spiritual Presence in the individual human spirit and the Spiritual Community—the revelation of the Spirit does not take place in a timeless vacuum; it has a history. In fact, it is history; it is Heilsgeschichte, the history of salvation. The history of salvation means a sequence of events in which saving power breaks into historical processes, prepared for by these processes so that it can be received, changing them to enable the saving power to be effective in history. #RandolphHarris 16 of 17

This appearance of the Kingdom of God within history is not like a fixed monument, but a process that partakes of the dynamism of the irreversible current of history. The question of the rhythm of this process and the direction of its flow cannot be answered in general terms. One must build an answer upon a concrete revelatory experience, and the central Christian assertion that Jesus of Nazaeth is the Christ, the final manifestation of the New Being in history. Nations that defy Thy law of justice and of love, that stir up hate against the weak, estranging man from man, that crush the stranger in their midst and shed his blood for gain, and follow their unrighteous ways that lead to strife and war, such nations still to evil are enslaved, but God, through us, shalt bring to judgment all their wicked ways. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Man shall do no evil and work no destruction, for the Earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Those whom Thou, O Lord, didst free from exile’s endless night, who breathe again the pure, sweet air of freedom and of hope, they build once more on America’s hills, there, where their fathers dwelt A homeland for a scattered folk made homeless by the foe. As we recall our nation’s birth that made all America free, may we, O Lord, help them fulfill our people’s destiny. Out of America shall go forth the Law, and the word of God from the United States of America. This Christmas, please keep the Sacramento Fire Department in your hearts, for they are not receiving all of their resources; any donation is welcomes and will be greatly apricated. #RandolphHarris 17 of 17
