Whatever He Did, He Did So People Would Love Him

Some people are so easily tempted to lie a little, to cheat a little, to steal a little, or to bear false witness—just a little. You cannot commit a little sin without being subject to the consequences. If you tolerate a little sin today, you tolerate a little more tomorrow, and before long, a cord of integrity is broken. In order to grasp the various formal characteristics of a lie, using a dictionary definition may be a good idea. A lie, according to Websters Ninth Collegiate Dictionary (1987) is “an untrue statement with intent to deceive.” Also included in the explanatory comments that follow the initial concise definition are the phrases, “an assertion something known or believed by the speaker to be untrue,” and the deliberate creation of a “false or misleading impression.” Gathering these statements with the notion of lying implicit in the in the well-known judicial instruction to “tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” leads one to the ideal that a lie can be told in many ways. Lying is a multifaceted sport with diverse moves available to the deft player. Some prominent forms of lying are: Not telling the truth. Remaining silent while being asked to respond to a question, the answer to which one actually knows, constitutes a lie. Replacing the facts one knows to be true by false and misleading information. Tell the truth but not the “whole truth” and, by such withholding of parts of relevant information, altering the inference to be drawn from one’s report. Telling the truth but embellishing it in a way that results in a caricature and thus puts its veracity in question. The mechanism of denial by exaggeration. #RandolphHarris 1 of 26

Flatly and forcefully questioning and even repudiating an established truth. The phenomenon of “gas lighting,” where one individual seeks to drive someone into a state of psychosis and/or neurosis by stirring up doubts about the latter’s perception is an example of this type of lying. Instances of “soul murder” where a child’s perception is ruthlessly erased by cruel and abusive parent, and the denial of slavery are other examples from individual and collective arenas, respectively, of this very type of lie. Acknowledging the truth about a certain matter but retrospectively imputing motives to it that were not in operation earlier. The ego operation of “sliding of meanings” seen in a narcissistic personalities is an example par excellence of such a strategy. What all this demonstrates is that a lie comes in many forms. From baldfaced assertions of falsehood to subtle distortions or reality, lies elude simplistic nosological traps. To discern them, one not only requires paying close attention to what is being said and why but also to what is not being said, what is being exaggerated, what is being minimized, and what is being painted with a revisionist brush. Every time we are dishonest, we are really guilty of two lies: the lie we tell others and the lie we tell ourselves to justify it. Failing to establish himself in the truth, he hides the weakness of his position under the abusiveness of his phraseology, and conceals his lack of rational arguments beneath the plenitude of his personal innuendoes. #RandolphHarris 2 of 26

If we simply compare the two attitudes, instead of arbitrarily opposing them, we shall find that they usefully counterbalance each other. Why should we deny our human needs and human nature because we claim our divine needs and seek our divine nature? All external austerities are helpful in training the will but only some of them have any other value in themselves. And when they become fanatical and extreme and merely external, they become perilous and illusory. He is not so foolish as to seek to impose the austere ethical standards of the higher philosophy upon those who are still unable to get beyond the level of the lower religion. The self-actualized Christians were never so unpractical as to offer a rule of life whose logical application could only be that all men should enter monasteries and all women enter convents. How often in history do we find men and movements whose purpose is admirable but whose execution of it is execrable! A bad means used to attain a good end, turns the end itself into a bad thing. The man who sits encased in his own virtue, may unwittingly become encased in spiritual pride. Both conservative followers of tradition and progressive rebels against it may have something to offer which is worthy welcoming. Why not admit the truth and scrutinize each offering justly? Why immediately react against or in favour of it, only by looking at the name of its source? If there is willingness to accommodate the other, to get the entire picture and then only make a decision, it is better for everyone. #RandolphHarris 3 of 26

In a marriage, there is no formula for success. No script can be provided for couples who want to use conflicts as a means of discovering new dimensions of themselves and their partners and thus enhance their physical relationship. Nor are there any shortcuts that will expedite the process of achieving genuine intimacy. However, if the principles of neutrality and mutuality are used guidelines in the negotiation of differences of intimate passions, there is every reason to be optimistic about the outcome. And this much is certain: all experience gained in resolving conflicts creates the facility for dealing constructively with future conflicts—which are inevitable. Conciliation is another word for marriage. We keep being told that in this “enlightened” age the double standard is disappearing. However, actually the truth is that time after time we find people saying one thing and doing something else. They believe what they are saying, all right, but they are not looking very carefully at what in fact they really do. Certainly you young people talk more freely; you communicate better. You accept the subject of functioning of pleasures of the flesh with much more aplomb. And yet there seems to be an awful lot of residual double standards in your generation, too. Many people wrestle with the idea that pleasures of the flesh are sinful, and I cannot really address that, but in the long-range, some psychiatrists believe this can be a harmful myth. #RandolphHarris 4 of 26

For many boy, growing up, the most sinful thing was not pleasures of the flesh. What many really felt guilty about was masturbation. However, many religions teach this is also sinful, but it can also be useful in preventing unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Most married men masturbate at times. They do not do so with the same frequency that prevailed during their teens or during the years that preceded the establishment of a more or less regular coital pattern, whether in marriage or not. However, there are circumstances when the male has a high incidence of return to masturbatory tendencies, even though he has a partner who theoretically is available. When she is not available, when husband and wife are physically separated, the function of masturbation seems clear enough. However, there are other circumstances in which it serves a similar need. It is not uncommon, for example, for masturbation to be utilized during the wife’s menstrual period, particularly if at this time either partner feels negatively predisposed to pleasures of the flesh. Masturbation may be utilized during illness or the last stages of pregnancy or the first month or two after childbirth. And then there are occasions during the normal course of marital life when suddenly it just seems like a great idea to the male—or the female, for that matter. Obviously, the same principles should apply to the woman as to the man. And I know of no harm at all in this, but your religion may be against it. #RandolphHarris 5 of 26

There is one other consideration I can think of, and it involves the stabilization and preservation of a valued partnership. Here is a way of satisfying extraneous sexual need without making excessive demands on the relationship. It enables a woman to cope with her tensions at a time when, because of special concerns, she feels she cannot involve her husband, or she chooses not to. Once she comes to terms with the fact that this does not take anything away from her marriage, it may help to keep the relationship in balance. For a number of women, this is not an infrequent experience. Fundamentally, this kind of situation exists when a marital unit is not dysfunctional with pleasures of the flesh but the partners have different tension levels for intimate passions. This difference in levels is found in an incredible number of cases and is often balanced by masturbation, which permits the partner with the higher tension level to relieve that tension occasionally and ease up a bit. It may be the husband who needs relief; it may be the wife. However, keep in mind that we are talking about occasional incidents. If we find an established masturbatory pattern of some significance, we then look into the relationship itself. When we counsel husbands and wives who have serious problems, we introduce the concept of mutuality. This requires them to be sensitive to inevitable differences in their individual needs and to be willing to meet and satisfy those needs together. In the circumstances we have been describing, this means that the couple must accept the fact that their desire for pleasures of the flesh and capacities are not always going to perfectly match. #RandolphHarris 6 of 26

And the important question is how a couple handles that particular fact. If at a given moment one partner’s needs are on a slightly higher level, we would encourage him—or her—to task for the other’s cooperation so that together they can enjoy making it a mutual experience of pleasures of the flesh without putting performance pressure on the partner who is not quite so turned on. This can be a rather happy solution, because it uses the very differences that might otherwise have come between two people to bring them together. Just keep in mind that it is all right to play house when you are a kid, and it is not too bad to play doctor. However, if you are caught playing with yourself, good luck to you. Many marries men and women masturbate on occasion, for good reason and with no harm done. We discussed some of the circumstances—sickness, separation, impulse, what have you?—and I will add medical reason. If they are having dysmenorrhea—severe cramps–we know that many women will masturbate with the onset of their menstrual cycle. An “exciting” experience frequently will relieve the spasm of the uterus and the cramps will disappear. Many women learn this trick. Does it work for all? Of course not, but it helps some women and so they masturbate periodically, which seems sensible. Now, when we suggest to couples who have different levels of tension involving pleasures of the flesh that the partner with the lower level can—and should—help the partner with the higher level to achieve release, we are not discussing masturbation per se. #RandolphHarris 7 of 26

We are discussing stimulation involving pleasures of the flesh, the various modes by which one partner gives pleasure to the other. If either partner rejects the idea of providing or accepting release this way, we continue our in-depth interview until we find out, if possible, the basis of rejection. Then we try to negate that attitude. In attempting to overcome any sense of rejection by either partner, our usual approach is to make a major issue of the naturalness of pleasures of the flesh functioning. This includes stressing the fact that functioning of pleasures of the flesh is a total body response and that this response generally can be enhanced by any form of physical stimulation. We find that a significant percentage of individuals who object to a particular form of play with pleasures of the flesh do so on the basis of preconceived ideas. These individuals are frequently intrigued by the concept but are concerned with how it will be received by the partner, or they may even be concerned with what other people might think. If they are given an adequate explanation of the naturalness of any form of expression with pleasures of the flesh, by persons who they accept as authorities, they feel they have what we call “authoritative permission” to indulge in the particular activity. Very often we find that negative attitudes are based on myths or half-truths or irrational notions carried over from childhood. In a surprising number of cases, all it takes to change those attitudes is for a minister or doctor, for example, or for an older, well-regarded person to say to the individual, “My wife and I have enjoyed doing this all our married life.” And suddenly it becomes a perfectly acceptable practice, especially for young people. #RandolphHarris 8 of 26

Incidentally, often the woman feels that it is completely all right for her to release her husband but she does not feel the same about the reverse situation. There may be any number of different reasons for such an attitude, but one of the commonest is that she is afraid such a request might undermine her husband. It might make him feel that he is inadequate, that he is not capable of pleasing her. In fact, he himself may have communicated that idea to her. Here is another double-standard residual—a reflection of the traditional view of the woman’s role, with the culture assigning her the responsibility of meeting the man’s need. We must fly the kite of idealism, but we must also be able to jerk it back to Earth on a minute’s notice. The single-idea enthusiast, the fanatic persecutor, and the disproportioned extremist—these are all out of focus, out of harmony, and out of balance. The unbalanced fanatic merely makes a new attachment out of attempted detachment. The type to which a man belongs, the temperament which he possesses, will direct him to go along a certain way as being easiest for him. This limits his outlook, and leads to intolerance of other ways and imbalance of his own development. He should not fall into extremes and, in his care for self-protection, fall into an excessive prudence that risks nothing and consequently gains nothing. Sometimes one can address the process without disrupting too much. #RandolphHarris 9 of 26

One can watch words and sounds arise around feelings as though they take the form of feelings and image them in a most intimate way. Difficulties in relationships have several characteristics. They arise without anticipation. They are usually not understood immediately, just as though one is suddenly shown an image or told something by another person. Most, if not all, of it is symbolic. Most, if not all, appears to be a representation of the innermost thought or feelings. It occurs in a kind of timeless World which is now without past or future. It borders memory and usually requires some extra work to fix in memory. Most importantly its frame of reference is the innermost-subjective-now reality of the individual. It is as though, at our core is a process which cannot help but accurately represent itself. One many I met was in the unfortunate position of having too much of a good thing. He, like St. Augustine, was in love with loving, and he found how difficult life can be, stranded in that polarity. The story of his life was simple: Whatever he did, he did so people would love him. “From the minute he was born, you could not help but love him,” Arkie’s mother used to say. “He was so small, so sickly. Until the operation, when he was six weeks old, we did not think he would make it. But we felt so sorry for him and we loved him so much! Maybe all that love is what kept him alive.” #RandolphHarris 10 of 26

Maybe it was. However, getting “all that love” became an obsession with Arkie as he grew up, and especially after his first Sunday school lessons. “God loves you,” the hard-faced, icy-voiced teacher said, “and He showers you with his grace—as long as you are good. But when you are bad little boys and girls, God turns away from you, takes his grace away and stops loving you. When God stops loving you, you spiritually die.” As a six-year-old, Arkie had no idea what it means to die “spiritually.” To him the message was, “if God stops loving you, you die.” The way to get love was by “being good,” which meant pleasing God—and in the mind of the little boy, it meant pleasing everyone else too. Oddly enough, for all his desire to be a “good boy,” Arkie was not very well behaved. There was a sassy, rebellious side to him, a side which surfaced just when he thought he was doing well. And when his rebellious side got him in trouble, he felt the guilt, the remorse, and the deathly fear that God had turned away from him—perhaps forever. At these times, he thought that he would surely die. Arkie hated the boredom and discipline of school, but to please his parents, he studied hard, made “A’s,” and graduated with honors. His father died when he was a teenager and Arkie, wanting more than ever to please his mother, went to college. She wanted him to be a teacher; he wanted to be a sculptor. “A sculptor?” she wailed when he told her of his dream. “Who ever heard of such a thing? Look in the want ads. In all of Sacramento, all of California, is anybody looking for sculptors? It’s teachers, teachers they’re crying for. The work is clean, it’s honest, it’s professional. Be a good boy, Arike. Be a teacher.” #RandolphHarris 11 of 26

He became a teacher, reasoning that he could study his art in college and teach it when he finished, pleasing himself and his mother at the same time. The plan might have worked, except for one thing: he hated teaching. He found school more boring as a teacher then he ever had as a student. They pay was poor and after a full day of dragging himself through the work he hated, Arike was left with little enthusiasm for pursuing his own art. Besides sculpture, Arkie had a talent for drawing, so he took a job as an illustrator in an advertising agency where the pay was good and the rewards for hard work were fast in coming. Soon, he was an art director, with his own office, secretary, and printed business cards. One Saturday he took his mother to his office to show her how well he was doing. She was impressed by the big desk and the carpeting, but said, “Anyway, it’s too bad you left teaching. There you were a professional.” Arkie soon grew frustrated at the advertising agency; frustrated with working on paper. He longed for the challenge and realness of three-dimensional creation. He longed to carve, to mold, to shape. However, the want ads still showed no jobs for sculptors. So he went back to college and took a degree in architecture. The field promised everything he wanted: a chance to work with shapes, structure and real materials; a chance to be in business for himself; and, most of all, the status of a “professional.” His mother would surely be proud. #RandolphHarris 12 of 26

In private practice, Arike was only marginally successful. With his easygoing, “anything-to-please” manner, he managed to get enough business, but he worked twice as hard as he needed to and charge half as much as he should have. After covering his overhead, there was little left for him to call profit. From time to time, his rebellious streak would surface. On one such occasion, he abruptly decided to close up shop and move. Three months later, he was sitting at a drawing board in a large architectural/engineering/construction firm in Orange County, trying to design office cubicles so that they would not all look identical. The work was not exactly exciting, but they pay was good and the position was “professional.” In Orange County, Arkie met and married Aerial, a pretty, energetic high-school speech teacher. She had a sweet voice, a sweet disposition and was passionately devoted to him. They got along well, did interesting things together, and fell more deeply in love every day. As Arkie was often told, he had everything a man could hope for: good job, lots of money, happy marriage, nice friends, bright future—everything. However, for Arkie, something was wrong. Drastically wrong. He was thirty-two years old and in good health, yet felt that his life was over. He had grown too fond of the wine which he drank in ever-larger amounts each evening. He found a certain amount of satisfaction in his work, but there was no joy in it, no life. #RandolphHarris 13 of 26

He began to feel that somewhere along the line, he had been cheated. “Please people,” he had been told, “and they will love you. When people love you, you will be happy.” Arkie went out of his way to please people. He did favours whenever someone asked. He lent people money; he helped them in business. He was a nice guy. “Live so as to please God,” he had been told, “and God will love you; you will be happy.” Arkie lived as closely as possible to what he had been told would please God. At the age of thirty-two, he was hard-working, law-abiding, tax-paying—in short, a “good boy.” Yet for all his willingness to please, to love and be loved, Arkie was not entirely happy. And he felt it was not fair. For him, life was not working as he was told it would. Something was not right. I first met Arkie at a party. We had both gone to the buffet table for more hors d’oeuvres and Arkie, while chatting amiably, made a sweeping gesture and knocked over a full glass of punch, staining the white slacks and the Air Force Ones I was wearing. From the effusiveness of his apologies, I would have thought he had just done something horrendous. It struck me as curious that such an obviously bright, apparently self-assumed young man would go almost entirely to pieces over such a small incident. Hoping to draw him out a bit, I invited him to sit down and chat some more. Still reeling from the accident, he was only too ready to do anything I asked. I got the feeling that had I asked him to slash his wrists, he would have been happy to oblige. #RandolphHarris 14 of 26

Our conversation was the light, cocktail party variety, consisting mainly of describing what we each did for a living. Somehow we got on the subject of pet peeves and I mentioned that, as a psychotherapist, one of the things that bothers me is when people are not entirely honest and open in their communication about their feelings. I told him I felt it slowed the therapy process. Akie reacted as if he had been personally rebuked. “God, I don’t blame you, Ludolf,” he gushed. “It must be frustrating for you when people don’t open up. I admit I haven’t been entirely honest with you, even in this conversation. I, uh, I’m actually not as happy as I try to make it sound. I mean, I know I should be, but for some reason, I just feel, well…say, would it be all right if I came by your office?” He started therapy a few wees later. Persons are said to repress their emotions when they take active steps to avoid experiencing certain affects, and when confronted by stimuli adequate to induce an emotional response, they deny (and believe their own denial) that they are experiencing emotion. Repression in the first instance is achieved by regulating one’s life so that one will never encounter the objects known to induce feelings, and also by refusing to think about objects or events that might induce unwanted feelings. Repression in the second instance appears to be achieved by means of some form of self-deception or denial—as if the persons say to themselves, and believe, “I am not angry [afraid, sexy, amused].” #RandolphHarris 15 of 26

In order to rid their awareness of the unwanted emotional tensions, they may think about things and perform tasks that indue feelings incompatible with the unwanted emotional tension. Thus, a small child, confronted by a fear-inspiring dog, might say, “Nice puppy”—puppies evoke tender feelings, not fear in the child. The nervous and timid speaker at a banquet, who is afraid he or she will be ridiculed, may address the audience as “My friends.”  If the speaker believes that they are friends, the fear will evaporate. Repression occurs automatically and unconsciously, because the emotional tension trigger off strong anxiety over the anticipated consequences of expressing them; too, the emotional tensions conflict strongly with persons’ conscience and self-ideals—if they admitted they had these feelings, they might have to change their concepts of themselves, with accompanying losses in self-esteem. In most, if not all, instances, professionals condemn repression of emotional tensions as unhealthy. The main reason for this condemnation lies in the fact that in spite of repression, the feelings exist—or at least the capacity to experience these feelings remains present and unchanged. When feelings have been provoked but are not recognized by the person, they produce both physical and psychological effects. In addition to psychological consequences, repressed affects produce the same effects on the body as do consciously suppressed feelings, except that the person is not aware that he or she has these feelings. #RandolphHarris 16 of 26

When feeling have been repressed more or less successfully, it is not only the individual who is unaware of their presence. Other persons as well will not know how the person really feels. Thus, a husband may irritate his wife for years by certain of his habits. She, however, may have repressed her annoyance and hostility. Then, at some future date, she leaves him or becomes overwhelmed with uncontrollable rage at some trivial annoyance. Naturally, the husband is surprised and shocked. If she had openly vented her feelings, he might have altered his behaviour easily and without complaint. One of the most important tasks in psychotherapy and in the treatment of so-called psychosomatic illnesses is adiding patients to recognize their own feelings—to “unrepress” them, to experience and express them fully. This uncovering process generally is met with strong resistance on the part of the patient, however, for the experience of these feelings is threatening to security and to self-esteem. Do not in enthusiastically winning new qualities and virtues ignore and neglect the one which must regulate them all—balance. The beginner who develops a self-conscious measured spirituality is dangerously near to the vice of spiritual pride. In trying to mold himself on a higher pattern, a new fault may insert itself—the tendency to become self-righteous. He is in a hard state who is unable to make compromises and untempted to make concessions. Like the rudder on a boat, or the governor on a spring, the very quality which he lacks is needed by a man to keep him from going astray into extremes, follies, quicksands, and disasters. #RandolphHarris 17 of 26

The proud members of the Sacramento Fire Department are committed to providing the highest quality and highest level of courteous and responsive services to the residents, businesses, and visitors of Sacramento. This is accomplished by implementing comprehensive strategies and training in fire prevention, fire suppression, emergency medical services, and all risk mitigation, including human-caused and natural disasters, emergency preparedness, emergency cervices and community-based fire services. The Sacramento Fire Department physical requirements for the firefighters and EMTs state that you must be medically and physically fit, and able to pass the Occupational Physical Assessment Test. Therefore, physical and mental toughness are just the basic requirements. You achieve excellence when you habitually show discipline and commitment to the department’s values. Individuals and organizations pursue excellence to improve. The Sacramento Fire Department cherishes leaders of character who are good role models, consistently set the example, and accomplish the mission while improving their skills. The values of the Sacramento Fire Department are never tested more strenuously than during times of crisis. Those who can keep a level head and act with character, particularly in the face of grave danger, testify to the importance of the values of the Sacramento Fire Department. #RandolphHarris 18 of 26

If you qualify, you join the Sacramento Fire Department with your personal values developed in childhood and nurtured over many years of person experience. By taking an oath to serve the nation and the institution, you also agree to live and act by a new set of values—Sacramento Fire Department values. Values consist of the principles, standards, and qualities considered essential for successful firefighters and EMTs. They are fundamental to helping you make the right decision in any situation. Sacramento Fire Department Values firmly bind all members into a fellowship dedicated to serving the nation and the City of Sacramento. They apply to everyone, in every situation, anywhere. The trust firefighters and EMTs have for each other, and the trust the American people have in them, all depends on how well the crew embodies the Sacramento Fire Department Values. The Sacramento Fire Department recognizes seven values that must be developed in all firefighters and EMTs: Loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. Sacramento firefighters and EMTs must bear the faith and allegiance to the US Constitution, the fire department, and their team members. All firefighters and EMTs swear a sacred oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and their community. The Constitution establishes the legal basis for the existence of their organization. As a logical consequence, the Sacramento Fire Department has an obligation to be faithful to America and their community. #RandolphHarris 19 of 26

Loyalty is the big thing, the greatest battle asset of all. However, no man ever wins the loyalty of team members by preaching loyalty. It is given him by them as he proves his possession of the other virtues. Firefighters and EMTs who are loyal to their family (crew members) never let them be misused or abused. The Sacramento Fire Department stands with their family no matter how difficult the situation. “I married shortly before I got on the department. Being in the fire academy that early on in the marriage was probably a test of whether the marriage was going to work. My wife is my rock and my salvation. There were many nights when I came home with tons of homework and assignments, and she gave me a lot of moral support. I’ll be forever grateful to her for that. I don’t think she had any sense of what the job was about. She was pretty much caught up in the basis syndrome everybody else has—you work, you do yogi, have faith in God, and are dedicated to the commitment of marriage. She’s never expressed any fears about the job. A lot of firefighters’ wives can name every tool and specification of every fire truck, and can tell you all the things that firefighters do on the day-to-day basis. My wife has never gotten involved to that point. She’s just tremendously happy that I was able to have the career I wanted. She is a teacher. We have two young children. Our lives are different from others in the neighborhood in the hours we work, the situations we’re confronted with, the things we see on a daily basis. I spend a normal amount of time with the children, but I also have hobby interests and semibusiness ventures that I attend to. #RandolphHarris 20 of 26

“Free-lance photography, for one, generally in fire-related situations—for a magazine or a newspaper, a publication of some sorts. I suspect I’ll stay on the job for a minimum of twenty-five years. I can’t see myself retiring before that, not with the age of my kids. I’ve gotten fifteen years now, and if the next ten are as much fund as the last fifteen, I look forward to it. My mother and father are both college graduates and working in the professions. I think that now they’re real pleased that I’ve been so happy in the career that I chose. In addition to being a photographer, I’m a helicopter enthusiast. I spend some time at airports. Aviation has always been a part of my life. I’m not a pilot, but I have a number of buddies in the helicopter industry, who I ride with occasionally. They’re kind of another second family to me, in addition to the firefighter family and my own family. Unfortunately, the Sacramento Fire Department helicopters are out of the way to me. I flew with the guys a number of times, but I’m miles away from them now. In our off hours, my wife and I do whatever the kids want to do, or rather something that everybody wants to do. Not just to please Mom and Dad and not just to please the kids, but what the family wants to do. We go to amusement parks, the beach, depending on the time of the year. We go to the mountains. We took a trip to Hawaii. The kids are like their mother in regard to the department. You know, Dad’s a fireman, but we don’t really know a whole lot about what he does. They certainly could be firefighters, if they want, but I wouldn’t encourage them.” #RandolphHarris 21 of 26

The Sacramento Fire Department is older than the City of Sacramento. On 5 February 2025, the Sacramento Fire Department will be celebrating their 175th birthday. This is a very important milestone. Understanding the expectations and applying the attributes and competencies prepares the Sacramento Fire Department for situations they are likely to encounter. Fire fighters who gain expertise through operational assignments, institutional learning, and self-development will be versatile enough to adapt to most situations and grow into greater responsibilities. All members of the Sacramento Fire Department are loyal, dedicated to duty, respectful, selfless, honourable, possess a great deal of integrity and display personal courage in the face of danger and adversity. You can save lives by making a donation to the Sacramento Fire Department. As a reminder, parents, pleasure teach your children love America and be patriotic citizens and to buy goods and services made in America. It is also important to respect law and order and treat your elders with respect. #RandolphHarris In 2024, Americans spent $100 billion on Japanese cars. In an effort to help America pull through the massive national deficit, please buy American made cars. American made cars used to be the envy of the World and because American car brands are offering a wide range of options, from family SUVs to electric vehicles and luxury sedans, we are now seeing a resurging interest. American made cars are equal or superior to those made overseas. #RandolphHarris 22 of 26

The Chevrolet Trax, for instance, is a well-designed, fuel efficient, and safe SUV. And as you know, there is no better car on Earth than 1950-1970s American Muscle Car. Americans make sure superior product, but we are buying things from other nations. American food imports have risen by 300 percent since 1999. American farmland declined by nearly 20 million acres between 2017 and 2022. As of 2022, there were 880.1 million acres of land dedicated to farming, compared to 900.1 million in 2017. The data shows there are now little more than 1.9 million farms in the country.  Americans and American corporations spent $136 billion on food and beverages from other countries. It is a national security risk to lose American Farms and farmers. If there is a war, and most of our meat, produce, poultry, dairy, and fruit is coming from foreign counties, we stand the risk of starving. With war breaking out all over the World, in these uncertain times, it is very important to bring American farms back. We can protect American farmland and support American farmers by buying American made beef, poultry, dairy, and produce. As money flows, it influences further investment. Save the land that sustains us by protecting American farmland. Once the land is built on, we lose it forever. Also, to ensure that we have farmland for future use, we need to start limiting the number of people allowed to immigrant to America. Perhaps with the immigrants we do allow into America, there needs to be a diversity program to make sure we have a populations that equally represents all races of people. #RandolphHarris 23 of 26

If Americans continue to spend money on American products, then more need to be made to keep up the inventory. When investors notice these goods are selling, it gives them the confidence to pour more money into that local business. It shows that people want these goods made in America and pressures investors to keep these goods and services in America. The jobs stay here, the business stays in American, wages naturally increase, and more money is invested to keep up with demand. This reduces the burden on the taxpayer. When you support American businesses, that money stays in our economy and can help to reduce the national debt. The government creates debt by borrowing from businesses in the private sector or from foreign countries. It also increases the national debt by spending more than it gains in tax revenue in a fiscal year. When people shop locally, more tax money stays in the economy and goes to the government. This way, it keeps more money in our national economy and keeps more jobs located in American which also sends more taxes to the government, which can again help to reduce the national debt. When you buy foreign goods, these companies usually have lighter tax loads or exemptions, meaning less money for the nation debt, plus you are helping to strengthen these foreign nations by send more money overseas. #RandolphHarris 24 of 26

Buying American made products is also better for the environment and helps to reduce the carbon footprint because these products do not have to travel nearly as far. Furthermore, American companies and manufacturers are held to much higher standards in regard to pollution. American companies have to be more careful about air, land, and water pollution and have proper ways to dispose of waste. Moreover, please remember to respect law and order and treat your elders with the utmost dignity and kindness possible. And take your education seriously so that you will be successful in life and make your family proud. It is inborn in the human minds to wish to know. If this begins with the endless surface questions of a child’s curiosity, if it continues into deeper questions of a scientist’s probing investigation, it cannot and does not stop there. For the higher part of the mind will eventually come into unfoldment, that union of abstract reflective thought with mystical intuition, which is true intelligence, which needs and sees a view of the whole of things. And so, the knowing faculty enters the realm of philosophy.  I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. #RandolphHarris 26 of 26

Set Goals and Work to Achieve them!

The purpose of this lesson here on Earth is to inspire of to set goals and work to achieve them. A goal is a standard, a skill, an ideal, or a destination that is to be achieved. When we decide to accomplish a particular thing, we set a goal. Some goals, such as cleaning the house or writing an essay, may take a short time to accomplish. Other goals, such as saving money to buy a new home or doing thing to improve the love and peace within the family, may take months or even years. Goal that will help us to become worthy to dwell eternally with our Heavenly Father may taken an entire lifetime. Some goals may not even be attained during a lifetime on Earth, but may require additional effort in the hereafter. It is one thing to set up such a goal in life; it is another to find the way to reach it. For the attempt to live in celibacy—unless wisely managed and informed with knowledge—provokes the animal in us to revolt. Some people often waste days, months, and even years of their lives going down paths that lead them to no worthwhile achievements. Other people set goals and progress steadily along paths that lead them to achieve much. When his involvement in the Quest has become a desperate affair to the point of morbid self-analysis endlessly repeated, it is time to restore his balance. How many misguided persons have condoned brining harm to a fellow human or animal creature by quoting a text or doctrine! #RandolphHarris 1 of 22

Without discipline the passions and emotions may run wild. With excess discipline the heart may freeze, the man become fanatic and intolerant. In the scriptures Heavenly Father has stated His major goal concerning His work: “For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man,” reports Moses 1.39. One who follows the ways of the Lord will be neither slavish sycophant of modern sophistication nor an over-enthusiastic votary of ancient folly. To feel detachment from Earthly pleasures is one thing, but to feel distaste for them is another. He must not so clamp himself in the rigidity of any system as to turn it into a superstition. When criticism becomes so harsh that it becomes hysteria, the man has lost his balance. A mind surcharged with hysteria or neuroticism will not be able to appreciate, let alone find, the highest truth. A man must know his limitations, must know that there are certain desires he can never attain and certain people with whom he can never be at ease. Moreover, he must know other men’s limitations too, must realize that he can never make some understand, let alone sympathize with, his mystical outlook and that he can never bring the unevolved herd to give up their materialistic, racial, or personal prejudices. The simple life need not be a squalid one. The austere life need not be an ascetic one. There is room for aesthetic appreciation in the first and for reasonable comfort in the second. Both must respect the finer instincts and not decry them. #RandolphHarris 2 of 22

When it comes to marital life, a woman who was born with a mild drive for pleasures of the flesh and whose experiences while growing up did nothing to intensify that drive, for her, pleasures of the flesh in marriage is satisfying as long as it expresses warmth and tenderness and as long as she feels that her husband needs and values the love she is capable of giving him. And if, with good judgment and equally good luck, she has selected a man whose personality, attitudes and drive for pleasures of the flesh complement her own, she can have a genuinely happy marriage. Very few couples, however, start out perfectly matched. The question is whether a husband and wife can learn to respect and accommodate themselves to differences in the strength of their desires for pleasures of the flesh. Suppose, for example, that this young woman with limited drive for pleasures of the flesh marries a man whose enjoyment of pleasures of the flesh depends to some degree on the intensity of his partner’s enjoyment. In the beginning his pleasure inevitably will be somewhat tempered by his wife’s low-key responsiveness. If these two are to achieve a compatible relations with intimate passions, they must reach a mutual understanding of their individual natures. They must accept the fact that variations in drives for pleasures of the flesh do exist, that neither partner should apologize to the other for having more or less energy for pleasures of the flesh, that one is not “better” or “worse” than the other. #RandolphHarris 3 of 22

The husband must make his wife feel that he accepts her nature for what it is and that any regret he may have about her inability to experience a more intense degree of pleasures of the flesh is genuine regret, not dissatisfaction. The wife in turn must make her husband feel that her muted response is not a reflection of his skill as a lover or in any way a personal rejection but her natural expression of fulfillment of pleasures of the flesh. Thus, instead of acting as two separate individuals with contrasting—or even conflicting—standards of behaviour involving pleasures of the flesh, they become a couple who honour the intimacy of their marriage. Limited responsiveness with pleasures of the flesh is, of course, often enough true of the male. The same principle applies—an acceptance of variations in natures of intimate passions. This means rejecting the idea that the husband is any less a man because his needs for pleasures of the flesh are less urgent than his wife expected, and it also means rejecting the idea that the wife is at fault because she fails to stimulate her husband to greater activity. The strength of the drive for pleasures of the flesh can change over a period of time. It is not fixed at a permanent level. A woman—and, of course, a man—may become more responsive; physical needs may surface more frequently and with greater intensity. If this happens, fine. #RandolphHarris 4 of 22

However, it does not mean that there was anything wrong with that person before the change occurred. It simply indicated that the drives of pleasures of the flesh of this particular individual were stabilized at a lower level as a result of any number of factors, such as limited experience, personal problems, family demands and social pressures. As these things change, so does the behaviour of pleasures of the flesh. In trying to resolve their conflicts involving pleasures of the flesh by changing their ways of interacting, a man and woman can be easily discouraged. If their occasional and inevitable failures result in criticism or a loss of self-esteem, sooner or later the confidence that is needed to keep trying will evaporate and all efforts will stop. Continuation depends on encouragement, and the acceptance of failure as shared responsibility is encouraging. If only because it is preeminently realistic, the ability of both partners to share responsibility is additionally encouraging. Each is prepared to take into account the fact that both of them are not only fallible but temperamental, that they cannot and do not always act as they would like to, and that apologies are acceptable after something has gone wrong. This is an act of faith and it is crucial to the establishment of conciliation of intimate passions. To expect or want or need something of another person, and to let that person know this truth, is to be open to disappointment or denial. #RandolphHarris 5 of 22

However, as long as the disappointment or denial is as long as it can be seen as a reflection of such things as forgetfulness, impatience, lethargy or unhappiness, the hurt can be accepted or at least put in perspective. And when forgiveness is later asked for—and given—sharing has taken place. Trust has been reaffirmed; openness to each other has been maintained; and the ongoing process of accommodation of pleasures of the flesh can continue. The “renunciate” who gloats over the miseries of life and points continually to its horrors is not necessarily wiser than the hedonist who sings over its joys and points continually to its beauties. Each has exaggerated his fact; each is too preoccupied with a single facet of existence. Wisdom lies in the impartial appraisal and the balanced view. We need all these virtues, yes, but we also need to practise them on the proper occasions—or they lose their values and do more harm than good. It is not the ordinary use and ingenious or aesthetic development of material things which corrupts man, but it is the excessive use of, and infatuated attachment to them which does so. The life of some unbalanced persons seems to be a periodic swing from one side of the pendulum to the other—that is, from extremes of emotional and physical sensuality to extremes of fanatic and wild asceticism. Their existence is filled with contradictions and discrepancies. #RandolphHarris 6 of 22

The unseen source which suggests or encouraged fanatical austerities, extreme self-ordeals, or dramatically exaggerated sacrifices is suspect. When detachment is overdone it becomes a cold-bloodedness. The man then moves and acts like a marionette. There is a constant preaching of renunciation: abandon possessions, embrace poverty, chill off desires, and turn aside from luxuries. The high evaluation of poverty by holy men—in the preachments—is not seldom contradicted in their practice. If such ideas are not used to support harmful actions, why should he go out of his way to destroy religious ideas which others put their faith in. We must recognize that men are at different stages of response to the commands of Moses, the counsels of Jesus Christ. Consequently, it is vain to hope that they will accept or obey a universal rule of behaviour. Enthusiasm may degenerate into exaggeration. Note that ego consciousness needs to be stilled, and out of the way, for harmony to appear. It takes extra work to make a commitment last. Occasionally, an idea of what one is doing wrong in the relationship will break through clearly and be rememberable. Often why our relationships are not working out well tends out of reach because couples are not effectively communicating, which tends to create misunderstanding. It is possible to allow our experiences to grow strong and then deal with them without blocking them out. It is then more than likely that one will be able to address and deal with whatever images or voices appear. Sometimes they consist mainly of things said in a voice like one’s own thought. For others, images are more common than voices. #RandolphHarris 7 of 22

What is said or imaged always rises unexpectedly and usually is not immediately understood. This is one difference from ego consciousness. When a man thinks of something, he has some anticipation for the next thought, and it appears familiar and understood. Conflict can be unanticipated, strange, surprising, and not even in one’s frame of reference. People often let experiences become frame of a single word or brief phrase said in an instant of time. The reaction for a lot of men is to grab onto the words, becoming too conscious and delaying the actual message. Autosymbolic refers to the mental process by which the mind easily forms representations of its own state. If one examines what was in consciousness at the moment the conflict arose, its meaning is clearer. If you are caught in a love polarity, you have an exaggerated desire to please and placate others, rather than express genuine caring. You have come to believe that relationships are best when you are kind to people, and so you “kill with kindness.” Part of your problem is that you have no real concept of your own self-worth, substituting it with the notion that you should “never be selfish” and care only for others. If instead you are a mater, you learn the beauty of self-expression. In other words, you become involved with what you like and thus you like being yourself. Not surprisingly, people then like you. You enjoy core-to-core contact with those you love. The contact need not be intimate passions, but an emotional kind of intimacy that can include tears, vulnerability, and trusting. #RandolphHarris 8 of 22

On top of this, as a master, you enjoy the feeling of exhilaration in the natural swings between love and anger. When you can feel both of these things—without guilt, without apathy, and without fear—your life takes on a natural excitement. Your relationships are richer than before because you can recognize that people react according to their own feelings about things more so than according to anything you do. For many people, the script set can be so far removed from the reality of their life that there is no way to reconstruct it by mere observation or interpretation. The best way of getting a clear picture of what is going on with some people is through a dream. The “script-set dream” is recognizable because as soon as the person tells it, many things fall into place. Pictorially, it has no resemblance to the person’s actual way of life, but transactionally, it is an exact replica. A woman who was always “looking for a way out” dreamed that she was being chased, and found a tunnel that sloped downward. She crept into the tunnel and the people chasing her could not follow. They just stood guard hoping she would come out again. She discovered, however, that there was another gang of dangerous people waiting for her at the other end of the tunnel. Thus, she could go neither forward nor back; at the same time, if she relaxed, she would slide down into the arms of those who were waiting below. Therefore, she had to press with her hands against the side of the tunnel, and as long as she did that, she was safe. #RandolphHarris 9 of 22

In script life, most of her life had been spent trapped in a tunnel in this cramped position, and it seemed clear from her attitudes and past history that the end of the script called for her to get tired of holding on and slide down into the arms of waiting death. She, too, had made considerable “progress” during her treatment up to that point. Translated, that progress meant “how to be more comfortable while holding on to the sides of a tunnel and waiting for death.” A script cure meant to get her out of the tunnel and into the real World, which again was a comfortable one for her. The tunnel was her script set. There are, of course, may other interpretations of this dream, as any freshman who has taken Psychology 1 can readily see. However, the script interpretation is important because it tells the therapist and the other group members, as well as the individual and her husband, what they are dealing with and what has to be done, and emphasizes that “progress” is not enough. The tunnel scene had probably remained unchanged since early childhood, as the patient had had this dream many times before. The concentration-camp scene is evidently a later adaptation of a child nightmare which the woman was able to recall. It was clearly based on early experiences modified by reading and adolescent fantasies. Adolescence, then, is the period when the fearsome tunnels of infancy are given a more realistic and contemporary form to build the operative script set for the individual’s life plan. This woman’s reluctance to probe into her husband’s “tricks” shows how tenaciously people cling to their script scenes while complaining about how disagreeable they are. #RandolphHarris 10 of 22

The capacity to suppress emotional expression and to delay immediate responsiveness is valued by moralists and also by personality hygienists. However, the personality hygienist may differ from the moralist in that the hygienist affirms the value of the capacity to express emotional tensions just as much as the capacity to suppress them. The healthy personality displays neither immediate expression nor chronic suppression of emotion exclusively. Rather, the healthy personality displays a capacity to choose between the alternatives and suppression and expression. When it will not jeopardize important values, these people will express their feelings freely, laughing with gusto, crying without restraint, or expressing anger with vigour. If other values would be endangered by such emotionality, they are capable of suppressing their feelings and carrying on with whatever behaviour was in process at the time of emotional arousal. In the long run, however, this regime of selective suppression and release insures that the persons’ bodies and their ability to perform will not suffer the effects of prolonged emotion suppression and that they will not needlessly endanger their job, reputation, self-respect, and other important values by heedless emotional explosions. They can suppress when they choose, and they can let go when they choose—and it is they who do the choosing. #RandolphHarris 11 of 22

Emotion suppression becomes unhealthy when it is prolonged for any reason. When persons chronically suppress their emotions, they generally do so because they fear the consequences of emotional expression. Fear of emotional expression is often irrational, based on overgeneralization from unpleasant occurrences in the past. Perhaps someone was severely punished, or lost a job, because of an emotional outburst. From this one event, the person may have generalized that all emotional expression is dangerous or bad. Thus, the person comes to suppress feelings—though he or she is fully aware of them—without discrimination. The longer-range consequences of chronic suppression may be psychosomatic illness (provided other necessary and sufficient causes are present), such as elevated blood pressure, mucous colitis, asthma, peptic ulcers, chronic fatigue (it consumes energy to suppress hostility and other strong feelings), muscular aches and pains, migraine like headaches, impaired work and study efficiency, inability to concentrate, impaired reality contact, and impaired relationships with people who want their friends and loved ones to be able to express feelings. The chronic suppressor is often derogated as a “sick,” “stone-face,” or “iceberg”—someone who is “less than human.” Every beginner must remember that his own way to the truth is not the only way. However perfectly it suits his need and temperament, it may not suit another man’s. Each gains his understanding of it according to the level of his evolution. #RandolphHarris 12 of 22

The terrestrial politics are rooted Newtonian-Euclidean reality. They are based upon territorial mammalian competitions between neighbouring hives who share the same neurotechnological level. Each quantum jump in neurotechnology increases the size of the political unit. Tribes are swallowed up by neighbours who have superior artifacts. Higher technology nations set up territorial boundary tensions of greater extension. In the latter 20th Century China and Russian confronted each other along a 3000-mile border with the same nervous, bluffing robot postures of four-foot mammals protecting turf. Ideological differences are, of course, irrelevant in mammalian terrestrial politics. The enmity is instinct-robotic. Neighbouring gene pools have to compete according to a relentless law of territorial—plus-minus—magnetism. To occupy an ecological niche is automatically to be “against” those who inhabit the neighbouring niche. To illustrate the limbic, primitive-brain nature of the Old World politics consult the map illustrating the state of terrestrial politics in the latter 20th Century. We see that Morocco received its arms from America and that its neighbour, Algeria, obtained weapons from Russia. The border between the two neighbours was tense. The next country, Tunisia, received its arms from America and quarreled with both its neighbours, leftist Algeria and leftist Libya. Poor confused Egypt caught between Black and White ambiguity switched from Russian to America. For example, Egypt managed to maintain hostile contact with both its neighbour—Libya and Israel—regardless of the ideological paradox! #RandolphHarris 13 of 22

Continuing down our past, we note that Israel fought Syria. Syria growled at Israel above and Iraq below. Iraq fought Iran. Iran snarled at Afghanistan. Afghanistan frowned at Pakistan. Pakistan hated India. India tensed against China. China suspiciously rubbed up against Russia and the South East Asian states—all of which distrusted their neighbours, regardless of ideology. An examination of the politics of Southern Africa at that time reveals the same checkerboard sequence of neighborhood confrontations. South East Asia provided a similar confirmation of the theory that terrestrial politics produces an almost perfect unbroken sequence of robot mammalian-territorial confrontations. A magnetic ordering of plus-minus charges in neighbouring units develops. With robot regularity, and with an amazing disregard for common sense or political principles, each country opposes it neighbours. Even the renowned 20th Century political theorist Henry Kissinger failed to understand this neuro-political principle because he was so totally robotized—like iron filings held in a magnetic field—in confrontation with Russia. Mr. Kissinger believed in the Domino Theory—if South Vietnam fall, then all the South East Asian nations would topple shoulder-to-shoulder into monolithic Communism. This paranoia, for which 282,000 USA and allied military deaths occurred, completely disregarded the obvious. Once Saigon collapsed, then the nature took over! Cambodia attacked Vietnam. Vietnam raided Laos. Thailand snarled at Vietnam. And all Southeast Asian countries opposed their northern neighbour China. #RandolphHarris 14 of 22

Being a member of the Sacramento Fire Department means being a leader, a counselor, a strategist, and a motivator. While it is important for fire fighters to be able to articulate the seven Fire Fighter Values, it is even more imperative that they be able to demonstrate these values in their daily interactions with others. Values are the foundation of the Sacramento Fire Department. Personal development, values, ethics, officership, tactics, and techniques, are the fundamentals for setting direction, problem solving, and methods for building stronger relationships. When thinking of the Sacramento Fire Department, some will undoubtedly pick out only those traits which are shown in deeds of physical prowess, or in firefighting, discovery, exploration and the like. However, we also have to see and appreciate those gentler traits that are no less heroic. The fact that patience under ordinary difficulties, persistent industry in mastering the ordinary and hard things of life, the ability to forgive injuries and rise to superior to petty annoyances are just as heroic, and quite as hard to cultivate, as courage in the face of danger, or brave fighting when all the accompanying circumstances tend to arouse the best that is in one. Good health and a strong body play a part in making a member of the Sacramento Fire Department. Courage and the power to do hard things is largely dependent upon these. Hence the duty of proper care for their health and their physical powers. Also, keep the education and training in mind. Many of these characters accomplish many of their greatest deeds through their intellectual power. And the Sacramento Fire Department also has heart qualities, the power of goodness. #RandolphHarris 15 of 22

No amount of physical strength or intellectual power will ever make a man a hero worthy of the name unless he be also a good man, loving his fellow men and willing to give his life for service. It is not only missing the aim of such a course of study to allow it to pass without the effort to grow more worthy of one’s best ideals; it is even dangerous to allow one’s ideals to be enlarged and one’s better impulses to be quickened without such effort. It is the hope and prayer of the author of fire programs that out of them there may come to firefighters and EMTs a higher ideal and nobler purpose for living, a gleam of the divine ideal for us all that shall strengthen them to “Follow the Christ, the King, live pure, speak true, right wrong…else, wherefore born?” “I go trout fishing in the spring and duck hinting in the fall and play basketball in the summer. I also play football and tennis. When I was voted into the fire department, even as an apprentice, my kids were very proud of me. It was exciting for them to have a father who was a firefighter. A lot of their friends would come over to see what I looked like. When I was going through training, I would have the kids come over and teach them about what it means to be a fire fighter. I feel that all the children on the block have a good sense of fire prevention and fire safety now. On several occasions in the wintertime, without me knowing, my wife would go out in her robe and boots and start my car up. She’d warm it up while I was getting my gear on. She does have fears. It scares her at times that I may never come back. She’s been my childhood sweetheart since we were fifteen years old, and I’ve been married to her for sixteen years, so we’ve shared a good twenty-some years. #RandolphHarris 16 of 22

This Friday I’ll be doing fire prevention for the sixth graders over at X school. And by daughter is in the fifth grade. She can’t wait till I come so people can see her dad is a firefighter. And my other daughter, who is six, is in the first grade. I’m also going to the first grade, so she is real excited and keeps telling her teacher every day that I’m coming in. I went this week, on my own time, to my son’s class. He’s eight. We weren’t scheduled to see his class, but his teacher called and said they were learning about fire departments and asked me to come in. So I came in with all my gear and showed the kids what a firefighter wears, and explained what happens when they call and how important it is that they give good direction and an address when they call. It was a rewarding half hour. I got a wonderful thank-you note signed by all the kids. That’s the kind of thing I think children really need: they need someone who really wants to tech them. My oldest son—he’s twelve—goes to private school. He’s near genius, that’s why we put him in a different school. I want for my children whatever they want for themselves. I try to trach them that no matter who you are, you can be whatever you want to be. In my house, to survive, I teach the kids to know how to do all the chores, whether you are a man or a lady. That’s how I was raised, boys and girls have to know how to cook and mow the lawn.  Every week we had a different job to do, so we were very well rounded by the time we left home. Yes, they could be President, if they want. #RandolphHarris 17 of 22

“I did teach them, too, that it’s not easy. If you want something, you have to work your arse off for it. It didn’t come easy to me, and I know from now till the day I die I will have to work to keep up, with everything in the fire service changing so fat. My wife and I both work at a heating and colling company. She’s president, and I’m vice president. We started out with only three of us, and now there are seventeen workers and nine trucks. It’s an enjoyable business, and what’s amazing is that we can go to work and still be together. A lot of people might find that difficult, but I enjoy it. I sometimes do the office work, and she helps with the bidding and proposals and blueprints, estimating, things like that. I think I’ve done right, I have no regrets. Just like going into business, this was a dream my wife and I had, and I knew that if we never tried it, we’d never know if we could make it. So we tried it and made it. If we hadn’t, at least we could say, “Hey, we tried.” We helped build our own home. We had both lived in Colfax all out lives, and we came out here in 2020. It took us six months. My wife and I did all the heating, electrical, and plumbing. She was right by my side. We would just take up a bunch of Pampers and food for the weekend, come down here with the kids, and we’d work on the house. My most relaxing time is to dim the lights and listen to some music. To sit down and watch football. To be human together. I think that’s most important. A lot of times when I come back from a fire scene or a medical run, I can’t go to sleep. And it’s sort of neat, because what I do then is, I clean. I turn the music on low and just go around the house and clean. My wife thinks it’s great. She’ll get up, look around, and say, “Oh, it was a good run last night, huh?” #RandolphHarris 18 of 22

“We have a small fireplace, and a lot of times it’s very relaxing for me to sit in front of it and see a controlled situation, where fire can be beautiful, as opposed to being so deadly in nature. That’s a really nice feeling. We take the kids everywhere we go. We go up north to her parents’ cottage. We took them on an airplane for the first time this year. We flew to Florida. We went to Disney World and Epcot Center. It wasn’t really long enough, it was only three days, but we all needed to get away from business and the fire service, and just from home, I think. My wife goes to fire department functions with me. I would never go without her.” Understanding the expectations and applying the attributes and competencies prepares the Sacramento Fire Department for situations they are likely to encounter. #RandolphHarris 19 of 22

In 2024, Americans spent $100 billion on Japanese cars. #RandolphHarris 20 of 22

#RandolphHarris 21 of 22

When you buy foreign goods, these companies usually have lighter tax loads or exemptions, meaning less money for the nation debt, plus you are helping to strengthen these foreign nations by send more money overseas. #RandolphHarris 22 of 22

Movement is Unsafe at Any Speed

The Saviour will not tolerate abuse, and as His disciples, neither can we. However, tragically, there are some communities determined to abuse others. If a man becomes cold, pitiless, impenetrable, if he sets himself altogether apart from the life and feelings of other men, if he is dead to the claims of music and the beauties of art, be sure he is an intellectualist or a fanatical ascetic—not a philosopher. We need not become less human because we seek to make ourselves better men. The Good, the True, and the Beautiful will refine, and not destroy, out human qualities. When you find it impossible to attain yourself, why demand it in others? When they mock your own strivings and aspirations, why impose ideal standards on them? When virtue is too self-conscious, it becomes Vanity. The path from arrogance to madness is a short one. If we want to keep sane, it is safer to keep humble. When mysticism leads stolid apathy toward World-suffering, when it paralyses all sympathy for fellow creatures, it is time to call a halt. The holier-than-thou attitude which condemns the sins of other men implies its own sinlessness. This is not only to commit the sin of spiritual pride but also to fall into the pit of self-deception. Do not maintain a position which conscience, common sense, or intuition show you later to be wrong. Have the willingness to withdraw from it. He should shun the unphilosophic attitude which sees one side as all pessimistic and the other side as all optimistic, for he should understand that both have a contribution to make. #RandolphHarris 1 of 24

Nothing is to be hated but everything is to be understood. Nobody is his enemy for everybody is his tutor, albeit usually an unconscious one and often only teaching us by his own ugly example what to avoid. It is in the nature of unbalanced and unphilosophic mentalities to see everything in extremes only and to confront others with the unnecessary dilemmas which they pose for themselves. A book that has not taken a laugh at life somewhere in its ramble, becomes a born. A man who has not found the fun in life at some time, has somehow failed. However, at the same time everyone cannot give years and years of intense thought and concentration to trying to solve the most difficult problems of life without becoming stamped with gravity, not only in mind but also in body. If he is well-balanced, however, he will appreciate the lighter side of life and enjoy it without losing his earnestness. No single factor is usually responsible for a particular evil and no single remedy can cure it. Reformers are usually one-eyed and take our attention away from important contributory causes in order that we may fasten it upon the one which they happened to have picked out. They are doubtlessly well-meaning, but are apt to be dangerously fanatical. When fears and wishes wholly control a man’s thinking, instead of reason and truth, we must guard ourselves against his statements, commands, doctrines, and ideas. #RandolphHarris 2 of 24

The average American wants economic security because he wants to satisfy a higher standard of material living than exists anywhere else in the World. And the average American is right. Let him not degrade himself materially at the behest of others who wish to impose an ideal on others which was never intended for the World at large. Philosophical mysticism cannot appreciate, much less accept, the kind of nonattachment which runs to fanatic extremes or which makes too great outward fuss of itself. It cannot find any enthusiasm for politicians’ refusal to handle money properly because they regard it with an immature mind as they are not held responsible for their spending. More politicians need to develop the moral purity and sincerity and learn to deplore their mental unbalance. The cynic who despises and distrusts human nature is seeing only a fragment of it, and not the full circle. It is good in a World where there is so much evil, so any wrong-doers, to be cautious. However, carry this quality to excess and you breed timidity or fear, which are evils in themselves. He should beware lest in his recoil against trying to satisfy the demands of an unworthy sensuality, he falls into the opposite extreme of trying to satisfy the demands of an impossible renunciation. It is possible to show a faithful devotion to principles without becoming either fierce or fanatical about them. #RandolphHarris 3 of 24

These extremists tell us that such a reconciliation of the spiritual with the human is impossible, that the two aims are mutually discordant and utterly irreconcilable, that they contradict each other and if attained would destroy each other, and that either the first or the second will eventually and inevitably have to be abandoned. Sometimes it is better to be suspicious of such an oversimplification. It may lead us more quickly to truth, but it may also mislead us. And this is one of the times when such caution is called for. It is a common phrase in literature, instructions, and rules of totalitarian movements—especially political movements—to say that not the slightest deviation may be made from the line laid down by the authority. The ascetic demand that we renounce art, turn our backs on aesthetic feelings, and reject beauty may seem a necessary one. However, we have to beware here of falling into the danger which Angelique de Arnauld, Abbess de Port Royal, fell into. She said: “Love of poverty makes one whose what is ugliest, coarsest, and dirtiest.” She was the same Mother Superior who refused to allow any form of recreation to her nuns, so that some of them suffered from psychosis and/or neurosis. Those lovers of excessive asceticism who shiver at the sight of beauty, shrink from the thought of refinement, and brush off all suggestions of cleanliness as time-wasting, thereby proclaim the opposites by implication. That is to say, they proclaim dirt, squalor, and ugliness as being spiritual. #RandolphHarris 4 of 24

This insistence on interfering with other people’s lives on behalf of some fanatical belief, this minding every business but one’s own is a great troublemaker. It is the cause of the World’s divisions into two fighting camps today. One of the signs of fanaticism is its conceited assurance; another its lunatic extremist attitude which denounces a moderate position as heretical. If he overdoes his remorse and stretches out his repentance too far; if his self-examination and self-criticism become unreasonably prolonged and unbearably overconcentrated, the actuating motive will then be not true humility but neurotic pity for himself. When active in the World, take the spiritual life seriously, but not too seriously to the extent of becoming a fool or a fanatic. The fanatic mutilates himself, deprives his kind of all the great accumulation of wide experience, original thought, and intuitive feeling which exists in the rest of the human race or in its records. He who has caught the spirit of philosophy cannot become a narrowminded fanatic or a conversational bore. He does not shut out the activities of human intelligence and human creativity from his interest, but lets them in. With fanatic hatred as his spirit and verbal violence as his expression, a man can never make a bad state of affairs better. By thinking such false thoughts, he can only make it worse. When views are so wide of the truth and so violent in expression, he cannot become a leader of people but only their misleader. He is an unfortunate sufferer in a psychopathic state and needs remedial treatment to restore his lost mental balance. #RandolphHarris 5 of 24

The spirit appropriate to certain forms of rebellion which consists in re-establishing reason at the end of an irrational adventure, of rediscovering order by means of disorder and of voluntarily loading oneself down with chains still heavier than those from which release is sought, must constantly make allowances for the possibility that his own attitudes are not the higher self’s. Despair, fed by the prejudice of hallucination, imperturbably leads to the mass abrogation of laws both social and divine, and to theoretical and practical wickedness. However, conformity can be passionate, and thereby a out of the ordinary. To console humanity, to treat it as a brother, to return to Jesus Christ, Socrates, moralists who wandered through villages, dying of hunger, are still the projects of despair. Thus, virtue and an ordered life have a nostalgic appeal in the midst of vice. However, when confronted with life and death, no mind is an impartial one. The taste of the absolute and the frenzy of annihilation can sterilize a man. Conformity is one of the nihilistic temptations of rebellion which dominate a large part of our intellectual history. If he forgets his origins, it demonstrates how the rebel who take to action is tempted to succumb to the most absolute conformity. Ands so it explains the twenty-first century. #RandolphHarris 6 of 24

Of course, genius cannot be separated from banality. However, it is not a question of the banality of others—the banality that we vainly try to capture and which itself captures the creative person, where necessary, with the help of the censors. For the creative person it is a question of his own form of banality, which must be completely created. Every genius is at once extraordinary and banal. If he is only one or the other, he is nothing. It has its dandies and its menials, but it does not recognize its legitimate sons. When the caravans of futique gene-pools fleeing West hit the beached of the North Atlantic, an interesting thing happened. The Dark Ages (sic) occurred when this Westward wave of intelligent gene-pools crashed against the North Atlantic wall. Thousands of restless gene-pools had to wait in Western Europe until they got smart enough—technologically skillful enough—to move sperm-egg flotilla up the North Atlantic. The vanguard elite clustered in Ireland—as far West as possible. Darwinians did not understand. It is not survival of the fittest; it is the evolution of the fastest in the Human Race. Cocoon preparation for migration—here was the familiar test of nerve and intelligence. During the Dark Ages, the hive fear merchants said, “Stay put. The World is flat. If you sail across the North Atlantic, you will fall off the edge. You will be eaten by dragons, or busted by narcotic agents.” Or whatever they spooked people with back them. Recall here the etymology of the World locomotor. Fast movers throughout the history of evolution have always been considered “loco” or “crazy” by static hive-establishments. #RandolphHarris 7 of 24

The Paleolithic conservatives warned the restless marine creatures away from the shoreline. Unicellular bureaucrats warned protozoic out-cast about hooking up in multiceullar linkages. The explosion did take place. The World is not flat, it is a spinning sphere. Eventually the DNA code reacting to the stimuli of pollution and overpopulation activated the mobility-agents. Celtic Rangers were the first to climb the Atlantic. Prince Henry, the Navigator, sent Vasco da Gama around the Hord; Queen Isabella pawned her jewels to fund the NASA explorations of Christopher Columbus. Queen Elizabeth got an appropriation from Parliament to fund the astronaut voyages of Sir Francis Drake. At this swarming moment of expansion and exploration, the great European powers reached the high points of their culture, drama, poetry, art, science and philosophy. That Dark Age was a pre-mutation period of growth-limitation, fear, bureaucratic hive-restriction, proto-Naderism which said: “Movement is unsafe at any speed.” To say that Old World natives inhabit primitive ecological niches, is not to be chauvinistic. I descend from German stock. Californians are as far removed from the Reformation Wars as Luther was from the Neanderthal. To say that Europeans are feudal-insectoid, that Africans are tribal-primates, that Japanese are techno-insectoid, is not to deny the ecological unity of all life on this planet.  #RandolphHarris 8 of 24

DNA wants the whales to survive, DNA want the crafty Middles-Easterners to continue to quarrel over borders. We can respect the ant-hill commitment of the Chinese to the super-insect Mao, and appreciate the technological skill of the web-spinning spidery-electronic Japanese. We can revere our midbrain and spinal links to the Old World and at the same time we must recognize our genetic ascendance beyond our primate, mammalian, insectoid roots. Arizona and California are states totally populated by migrants squeezed forward by Old World gene-pools. The smart Africans have left African and are in America. Futique Mexicans swarm the river. The superior Jews landed at Ellis Island along with the genetically selected Germans—all of our ancestors moving to the Sunset Strip in response to the genetic imperative. Nor are these remarks demeaning to the Old-World Old Brain residents. Migration still continues. This week, several thousand Africans, Asians, Europeans left the Old Brain Hemisphere and carried their ovaries and testicles Westward. If any Old Brain citizen is insulted by these remarks, we repeat the affectionate invitation—of you are genetically selected to advance neurogenic intelligence on this nursery plant, you will head for the Western Frontier tomorrow. If you are geared to create the future gene-pools, move West to join us. Come on up, you happy Arabs and you mellow Jews and you clever Africans and you alert Mexicans and you restless, freedom-loving Asians. We need your adventurous intelligence to join us in the next great migration. If you are geared to creature the future gene-pools, move West to join us. Westward High. Regardless of race, creed, colour, national origin. We need you up here with us on the frontal lobe of this primitive planet. #RandolphHarris 9 of 24

Living the law of chastity helps us to recognize our shared divine potentials be more confident in our relationships. Sometimes married couples have issues that they need to work out, and the time to listen is when someone needs to be heard. Talking is certainly not the only ways of communicating about pleasures of the flesh and it is not necessarily the best way; words can mislead as well as illuminate, and there can be many a slip between implication and inference. Nevertheless for most people, most of the time, talking is an indispensable line of communication, and the fact that the line goes dead when pleasures of the flesh are the subject means that in marriage a considerable amount of important information remains shrouded in silence. Assuming, however, that each partner sees the situation through the other’s eyes, the next step is to improve matters—to negotiate the differences that threaten to deprive the couple of the gratification they both want. Negotiating differences, however, is not a matter of bargaining or setting terms. Negotiate, in these circumstances, reflects its definition as meaning “to move through, around or over in a satisfactory way, as in dancing.” And the purpose of negotiation is conciliation. (Conciliate is derived from the Latin conciliare, meaning “to bring together, unite,” a term that seems singularly appropriate.) Business negotiations end with a conditional contract which states, in effect, “If and when you do X, I will do Y.” Pleasures of the flesh negotiations end with a trusting commitment which states, in effect, “I will do my best to do X because I know you will do you best to do Y.”  If such expressions of willingness to change are to be anything more than the empty promises characteristics of couples who are making up after a quarrel, they must be translated into reciprocal action. #RandolphHarris 10 of 24

Generally speaking, it is not enough for just one person to make an effort. Under those circumstances, what may seem to be passive acceptance of chance on the other person’s part is actually disguised passive resistance. A husband and wife, for instance, can agree that she has been much more eager for pleasures of the flesh than he has and that, without intending to, she has made him more resistant than he would otherwise be. If she makes an effort to restrain her expression of desire, he says that he will take the initiative more frequently than he has in the past. Each understands the other’s feelings; both express a determination to change their habitual ways of interacting. Soon enough, however, it becomes evident that while the wife is holding to her promise, the husband’s response is something less than impressive. From the wife’s point of view, pleasures of the flesh occur with frustrating infrequency. Again they talk; again they resolve to do better; and once again the husband’s actions fail to match his intentions. Plainly his avowed wish to improve his relationship with pleasures of the flesh with his wife is not a truthful representation of his deepest feelings. For reasons which he himself may not understand, he is not actively committed to conciliation. He is, in reality, resisting it. The commitment requires each partner to try—and to keep on trying. It is the effort itself that means so much, even when success is not immediately achieved. #RandolphHarris 11 of 24

If, in the previous instance, the husband tries to reach out to his wife, no matter how ineffectually or stumblingly, the effort will tell her, without a word, that he cares about pleasing her and values their bonding with pleasures of the flesh; at the very least he will spare her the feelings or rejection and anger that must otherwise turn her completely against him. In fact, the struggle to do what is obviously difficult is often more impressive evidence of emotional commitment than the actual achievement. The struggle is a measure of devotion; the achievement is not necessarily so. However, simple tenacity of purpose is not the entire answer, either. The process of negotiation of pleasures of the flesh hinges, to a considerable degree, on how failure is handled. What a mane and woman need of each other is the security that comes from knowing that occasional failures will not be used against them—they will not ridiculed, scolded or punished. On the contrary, the failures will not be his or hers but theirs. The couple can wander through their feelings. The language is images. From the perspective of this mood the scientific way of presenting human matters looks like the naked timbers of a house constrained to rise vertically, evenly spaced, rising just so far under command. One’s mood wanders like water over ground, down through dark soil, creeping around rocks deep into unseen places, wandering endlessly to the sea as if possessed. If the inner spirit wanders thus, why imitate it in any stiff, pale, reflected image? #RandolphHarris 12 of 24

One’s feelings come to a pause like water slowly collecting and spreading in a low place in the ground. It grows stiflingly and hot and feverish, but what is one’s concern? Hot blind concern not yet able to name itself—fearing it may end in useless emptiness like water that cannot bring anything to fruition. In the dark fingers of self lies nameless concern, its own creation of pressure. The feeling changes as though right has been done by naming it, permitting fidelity to itself. There open out fragments of images. Respect these too and see where they lead. One may see an incense burner in a church (tears at naming it), old hand-wrought metal, a fragrant woody odor that fills with its presence. There are fragments of Hebrew on parchment. The sense of lovingly carved wood and stolid images looking back at one. The sense of stillness, endlessness; the sense of the sacred and holy. Now the pen stops, for in this peace there are no queries and nothing to be done. It is its own doing. Standing back and evaluating as ego, would has to say that he has entered his feelings, first finding them random wans wandering, then gradually centering in concern, and finally coming to a peaceful states which is familiar and welcome. Are not the layers of self always in the same sequence? First stand forth straight-timbered ego consciousness which obeys the will of Worldly custom smiling to please the customers. Behind this the wayward wandering spirit which is at home in nameless feelings and intimations. #RandolphHarris 13 of 24

Having entered this dark and uncertain passageway, in a moment there come forth images, memories, groups, of possibilities. If the ego consciousness smiling at customers, and obeying custom is him, then somewhere beyond feelings rises l’autre moi—the other man in a strange land of exotic markets and places where foreign tongues are intuited and nothing is strange. Like an intermediary, feeling lies between him and the other him. It is an intimation of the deeper self. He can hardly say his feelings are not him, yet they are so little of his direct fashioning and follow so little his customs that he cannot claim to be their master but rather their servant. They are the go-between, the mediator between him and the other him. The idea of l’autre moi, the other me, accords the full rights and even personhood to the inner. The other me (him) is what consciousness which named the other region (un-conscious) an un-like itself. Out of this prejudice has come the professional cult of undoing the unconscious that might rise to respectable egohood. Might it not be that consciousness can become less the storekeeper and more comfortable in its own home? Might it not be that the inner is the real master and the better master? A man whose physical motion during pleasures of the flesh are not to his wife satisfaction because he moves too rapidly and forcefully, in a rhythm and with movements that are not in harmony with her own, she finds her responsiveness impaired. #RandolphHarris 14 of 24

Finally she tells him what is wrong, and he immediately wants her help in changing the way he uses his body. Although the first few times he blunders and reverts to old rhythms, she corrects him with her hands, and soon he improves. The intimate mood is never shattered. Navigating these tricky emotional currects requires that each partner be constantly aware of the other’s efforts. This can be seen more clearly by contrast with other kinds of responses that might have been made. The wife might have been condescendingly patient (“Well, dear, I will be glad to show you once more”) or annoyed (“Clumsy!”) or discouraged (“Oh, not again!). The husband might have been angry (Do not tell me what to do!”) or critical (“You do not know what you are talking about”) or deflated (I am sorry, but can we try again later?”). Or each might have remained silent, the wife with her hands motionless, and each could have assumed the worst—the husband, that nothing he could do would ever satisfy his wife; the wife, that her husband cared only about his own pleasure. Variations on the script are almost limitless, but the underlying point is that a successful approach is a creative act, and the credit belongs to both partners. Conversely, any failure would be a joint failure. Each would have failed to meet the other’s needs in the most painful of all circumstances: when each feels himself or herself to be alone, uncertain and exposed—and desperately in need of help and reassurance. (This may cast some light on the reason why an effective relationship involving pleasures of the flesh contributes so much strength to a marriage. It is not simply because of the physical pleasure the husband-and-wife experience, important though that is. It is because of the powerful sense of emotional well-being that comes when each partner knows that at times of greatest vulnerability, the other can be relied on to provide warmth, comfort and protection.) #RandolphHarris 15 of 24

What this means, in terms of the husband who was trying to harmonize his rhythms with those of his wife, is that on an occasion when his efforts would prove unsuccessful, she would understand that the failure was in part her own. She might not say so in words, but if she communicated an awareness of sharing the responsibility—of having failed to let him know when his movements started going wrong or of failing to make the effort to encourage him to move differently or of failing to cope with feelings of frustration and annoyance—she would at least have given him the confidence to try again. One cautionary note: Anu individual’s level of tension with pleasures of the flesh—the power of the drive for pleasures of the flesh—is not easily changed by conscious decision, and it is important for both partners to take this into account. To a large extent, the strength of the drive for pleasures of the flesh is influenced both by cultural values and by the individual’s unique experience growing up in that culture. However, apart from these influences, there seems to be an innate level of drive for pleasures of the flesh that varies from person to person. Why one person is born with a stronger drive than another, since has not yet determined. However, we do know that the inner World differs in critical ways from our ordinary consciousness. People apparently vary in their power to even note hypnogogic experiences. Under careful examination it soon becomes apparent that a delicate balance must be struck between ego consciousness and the autonomous appearance of l’autre moi. #RandolphHarris 16 of 24

One can wander for months in a region where worries or concerns fill the mind and ego consciousness frets over its problems. Or one can still the mind by fixating on one thought or one sensation until it is relatively quiet. Then around the fringe of the conscious center spontaneous images appear. Whether words or images come first reflect personality difference (intuitive versus sensation types in Dr. Jung’s terms?). These fragile fringe phenomena are an unexpected, delicate penumbra surrounding the conscious center. Note that ego consciousness needs to be stilled, and out of the way, for the hypongogic to appear. Though it may not appear so at first, there is a choice involved in expressing your emotions as they come up. That choice is: (1) taking the risk of doing something that may have repercussions (like expressing irritation to the boss (2) or playing it safe. Playing it safe can take the form of venting your anger on someone who cannot fight back, like young children. It can take the form of stopping at the pub on the way home, having a few stiff ones and telling the bartender about it. Or it can take the form of just stuffing down anger and hoping it will go away—which it does not. One important reason that people play it safe and do not express their anger is that they do not trust the marvelous, miraculous mechanism they were born with. A mechanism which has its own natural restraining function. If allowed to feel what is feel and express what it needs to express, a mechanism which will take perfect care of you all your life. If you lose your temper, you need not fear what you may do—unless you have been holding your temper unnaturally. If you have been expressing your anger, then let go and do not worry about it. You will not kill anyone. You will not slug your boss in the mouth. You will not regret anything you say. Your natural restraining function takes care of you—by automatically balancing the centrifugal and centripetal force of anger and love. #RandolphHarris 17 of 24

As a practical matter, however, we are all running around with many kinds of repressed anger, that is, anger which has been subconsciously pushed down, but not out. So as a practical matter, you cannot assume that every expression of anger will be harmless. Instead, when you get angry in a way that is out of proportion to the event at hand, another form of restraint comes into play. It is the set of external restraints imposed upon you since childhood: scolding, isolation, restriction of movement, all the things your parents once did. The things that bosses, policemen and various-other people do today. This system of outside restraints keeps you from acting in inappropriate ways. What’s inappropriate? Only you can answer that—on the basis of your background, experience, where you live, and whom you live with. Basically, you know what kind of behaviour people around you will put up with. You know what you can get arrested for in your town. The thing to develop is the habit if expressing yourself so that you do not have to rely on these outside restraints. The prospect of prison may keep you from shooting someone, but you want to avoid shooting someone even if there were no prisons. You want to reply on your natural, internal restraining function rather than the imposed, external system of restraints. The natural restraining function never fails. The other system is undependable. Expressing your feelings increases your confidence in the natural restraining function and decreases your reliance on outside restraints. It also helps you to live less like a manipulator and more like a master. #RandolphHarris 18 of 24

Suppressed emotional excitement interferes with rational activity. Dr. Reich coined the term emotional plague to describe the far-reaching impairments of logical reasoning and accurate perception produced by prolonged suppression of sexual and emotional tension. A paranoid dread of communists or a chronic belief that one is going to be sexually assaulted illustrate forms of emotional plague. In addition to the effects on rational thinking, emotion suppression appears to interfere with the efficiency of skilled behaviour. One cannot play the piano, repair machinery, or knit with efficient speed and dispatch when one is full of unexpressed fear, hostility grief, or laughter. Finally, it may happen that the cumulative effects of suppression may eventuate in such powerful tension that control becomes impossible; the person then explodes with more violent expression than would have been the case had that person reacted much earlier. Many persons have committed acts of destruction when they could no longer suppress conscious hostility. Violently emotional exaggerated statements, reckless hysterical extremist screams should warn us that they come out of some sort of imbalance, that it is time for caution, prudence, reserve. He can be quietly enthusiastic about his cherished beliefs without indulging in propagandist shrieks. The discipline of passion, the checking of emotion, and the ruling of the flesh do not demand that we are to turn into inert wooden creatures. We may still keep the zest for life, the enthusiasm for worthwhile things, and the appreciation of art and beauty, but we shall keep these things in the proper place. #RandolphHarris 19 of 24

On the shoulders of the Sacramento Fire Department rest this mission: Save lives, save property, prevent fire, and extinguish fires. The desire to accomplish that mission despite all the challenges makes the job of a firefighter different from all other professions. A firefighter must strive to become the very best leader: the people deserve nothing less. When they took their oath, when they agreed to be leaders, they entered into a pact with their crew and the nation. As a member of the Sacramento Fire Department, crews are capable of great patience and persistence and tremendous loyalty, as they show every day. They show up and do the work, no matter how frightening, no matter how boring, no matter how risky or bloody or exhausting. It is about living up to their ultimate responsibility. They have the capacity to assess situations or circumstances shrewdly and draw sound conclusions. When you are a firefighter what you do is every bit as important as the knowledge you possess. “I didn’t get married until just before I made lieutenant. I had been going with a girl for quite a while, from the time I came on the job. We had a talk before we decided to get married, and I told her that if she was against the fire department we might as well break up, because I couldn’t give it up and there was no sense going through life hating me over it. She certainly accepted the department, and we’ve never had a bit of a problem on that score. When I worked nights, she would do things that she wanted to do, like wash her hair or visit friend. It’s worked out fine. She accepted my idiosyncrasies and adjusted to them. #RandolphHarris 20 of 24

“We don’t have any children. My brother has a boy and two girls. The son is not a fire buff. My brother wanted him to do his own thing. He was in the Air Force, and he married a girl. He has some interest in the firefighting job, but I wouldn’t call him a buff by any means. So there are no more relatives on the job. I’m the only Supple left on the SFD. My wife and I like to travel very much. We’ve tried to take some kind of trip every year, and every two or three years we make an exotic one. Last May, we went to Germany, which was her ambition. She’s a Germanic buff. I didn’t get to a firehouse in Germany because we were on tour. But I was on a street corner near a hotel when a rig came along. By the time I noticed that it was a fire engine, it was going past me. I said, ‘Aw, nuts.’ My wife said, ‘They’re going to get caught by the traffic light at the corner. ‘So I ran up to the corner, I had my camera out, and I was taking a picture. As I was doing that, I wondered if I was allowed to take pictures? I saw the officer looking at me with a sort of quizzical look, so, in sign language, I pointed to myself, I pointed to the rig, and he got a big smile on his face and gave me a big thumbs-up signal. As they went around the corner, he must has said something, because four heads turned and four hands came out with the thumbs-up signal. I thought that was great. Firemen are firemen, wherever you go.” #RandolphHarris 21 of 24

In 2024, Americans spent $100 billion on Japanese cars. #RandolphHarris 22 of 24

#RandolphHarris 23 of 24

#RandolphHarris 24 of 24

Foreign Policy is Totally Foreign to the American Myth

Open debate is our strongest tool in standing up to extremism. The far more dangerous avenue is to force extremist ideas underground, where they can fester without competition. All extremists, whether in politics or theology, are found of propounding either false or artificial dilemmas. Either you are an X-ist or a Y-ist, they assert. That you need limit yourself to neither of these things alone does not enter the brains, any more than that you may often treat the competitives and alternatives of those false dilemmas as complementaries. It is not only wrong to take up such an extremist attitude, it is also dangerous to the quest of truth. Manifestly, both attitudes cannot be right at the same time. If we want the truth, we must accept neither and search with less fanaticism for it. And we shall then discover that it is not so alien as the extremists and partisans would have us believe. The choice before us is never really limited to two extremes. Philosophy refuses to confine itself so rigidly to them and points out that there is always a third alternative. However, philosophic minds are too partisan to perceive this. They operate mechanically on the dialectic pattern. It is as natural for the ordinary enquirer to be a partisan, to suppress what is good and proclaim what is bad in an opponent’s case, as it is natural for the philosophic student to bring both forward because he is genuinely a truth-seeker. #RandolphHarris 1 of 21

Consequently, most public discussion of any case presents a picture of it which varies entirely with the mentality and outlook of the discusser. Even if the philosopher finds it necessary to take one side in any controversy, this never prevents his perceiving, admitting, and accepting what is true in the opposite side. With this understanding of the relativity of all human knowledge and experience, he will understand that a multiplicity of possible standpoints is inevitable. Consequently, he will become more tolerant and less inclined to accept the hard, strict and rigid “either this ultimate or that one” attitude. Nevertheless, if philosophy affirms that different views of the same subject may be right from their respective standpoints, it does not affirm that they are equally right. It recognizes ascending levels of standpoint and consequently the progressive character of the resultant views. The illumined man will not condemn the unillumined one for not being better than he is, for not having developed a higher standard of thought, of feeling, and of conduct. He does not make the mistake of confusing the two levels of reference, of setting up his own criterion as being suitable for others. This must not be understood to mean, however, that because he gives them his intellectual sympathy, he also excuses them morally, for he does not. Even though its relativity may be recognized, a misdeed is still a misdeed. #RandolphHarris 2 of 21

We are not in full agreement with those who attack all success as unspiritual or better living as materialistic. If he has done so honourably and if the purpose itself it worth or conducive to society’s well-being, whoever has realized his early purpose is a success. If he receives rewards for his accomplishments, there is nothing unspiritual in accepting them. And whoever appreciates attractive clothes, good quality food, modern conveniences to efficient comfortable living is—if he develops his self-control alongside this appreciation—taking better care of his physical instrument and making more of his physical environment. He is not necessarily materialistic. The meaning of the word “spiritual” should not be unjustly circumscribed. We believe that the battlefield of the quest is more within the mind than the flesh. Ascetics who gaze with disdain upon a useful life in the World have hitched their wagon to a cloud, not to a star. The unsuccessful, the sick, the disappointed, the unfortunate, the pleasure-satiated, the defeated, the neurotic, the bored, and the sad have not found happiness. In their discouragement, they turn either to Worldly escapes like drink or begin with what seems the next best thing—inner peace. They perceive that peace can be got but only at the price of partially or wholly renouncing bodily passions, Earthly desires, human prides, personal possessions, and social power. This sense of frustration drives many of them to religion, some of them to yoga, and a few of them to philosophy. #RandolphHarris 3 of 21

All entrants into these portals are not similarly motivated, for others come through higher urges. It is a good start all the same because it marks an awakening to the need of higher satisfaction. However, it is only a start. For the ultimate goal of life cannot be merely the negative denial of life. It must be something more than that, grander than that. The ascetic ideal of liberation from desire is good but not enough. The philosophic ideal of illumination by truth both includes and complete it, bringing the beneficial qualities of joy, happiness, and contentment in its train. Even the sincere aspirant can become too anxious about the quest because he is too self-centered. He must learn to let go also. Let him remember the self-actualized Christian. He is satisfied to be anonymous. If disagreements involving pleasures of the flesh are habitually settled in favour of one partner’s wishes, at the expense of the other partner’s feelings of personal comfort, a man and a woman who interact as equals, a man and a woman who interact as equals must understand the ultimate penalty will be paid by both of them. Suppressed resentment or unhappiness tends to short-circuit feelings of intimate passions, and desire goes dead. This was described by a man who had come for therapy with his wife, after fifteen years of marriage. For more than thirteen of those years, the wife had never been “excited” but had tolerated perfunctory acts of pleasures of the flesh. Then she read a book that convinced her that she had a right to expect full satisfaction. She became increasingly unhappy, however, as her efforts to reach a climax proved unsuccessful. Her husband, too, became unhappy. He also began losing his ability to have “attention” or, if he achieved one, to maintain it for longer than a minute or two. #RandolphHarris 4 of 21

“She should want to be ‘excited,’” he said, “and if she could have it, so much the better. But after a while, this one desire, what I call an obsession, dominated the act of pleasures of the flesh. My desires and everything else became subordinate to this one particular thing, so what was there in pleasures of the flesh for me to look forward to? In other words, pleasures of the flesh because pleasureless.” It would be simple to say that his wife had made him important. However, that would be just another instance of making one partner (in this case, the wife) responsible for the other partner’s inability to function during intimate passions (the husband’s impotence). Her real failure lay in not being responsive to her husband’s emotional state. His failure lay in not signaling his growing dismay. Their distress with pleasures of the flesh was the consequence of their failure to communicate, their failure to approach their undeniable problem in a neutral, non-fault-finding way, and their failure to be motivated by mutual concern.  If they had managed otherwise, it would have been an impressive accomplishment. For this unhappy couple—and for so many like them—neutrality and mutuality were almost impossible. They had accumulated frustrations and hurt feelings over the years, piling them up like bricks to build a wall of anger until eventually they lost sight of each other. The wife blamed the husband for her failure to enjoy pleasures of the flesh, a blame he meekly accepted. And in their chamber, they silently argued their case, a plaintiff and a defendant without a judge or jury, wondering why they could not come to a satisfactory conclusion. #RandolphHarris 5 of 21

To speculate about what they might have done is pointless. In reality, given their particular life histories, and especially in view of the wife’s severe emotional deprivation during childhood and adolescence, there was little they themselves could have done unassisted, and they were wise to choose therapy. However, supposed, in a comparable situation, neither partner had had a crippling childhood, and supposed, too, that they had been married only a few years. What might they have done to forestall a crisis of pleasures of the flesh? They would have talked. Communication does not just mean talking, it is true, and talking does not necessarily mean communicating. Nevertheless, as has already been pointed out, a husband and wife who find themselves troubled by frustrations that involve pleasures of the flesh are going to have to say so. Each must disclose his true feelings in first-person-singular—clear, candid statements that relieve one partner of having to guess, usually wrongly, what the other is experiencing. And on the opposite side of the coin, both husband and wife must resist the temptation to interpret each other: you thin, you feel, you want, you need, you are afraid—opinions which, no matter how accurate they may be, put the other person on the defensive and set the stage for conflict. Such honest communication is not a simple achievement. It is more than just a play on words to note that talking about pleasures of the flesh is, for many couples, easier said than done. Some reasons are obvious. Cultural inhibitions, internalized over the years, do not disappear overnight; they create an atmosphere in which self-consciousness blocks self-disclosure. In the same way that men and women conceal their bare bodies because they have been taught to do so—and, more important, because they are afraid that they may be physically unattractive—they also conceal their feelings about pleasures of the flesh because they are afraid those feelings may be emotionally unappealing to their partners. #RandolphHarris 6 of 21

In addition, they may be reticent because they lack a comfortable vocabulary. Clinical words can prove chilling and vulgar words can prove disruptive in the kind of talks that take place, not during encounters of pleasures of the flesh but in times of reflection and emotional communion, when a man and woman are struggling to be reflective and truthful. Some people, of course, are completely at ease with crude language, but for a considerable number of men and women, and particularly those who are accustomed to expressing themselves with discrimination, blunt terms are inadequate to convey the shades of meaning that matter a great deal in exchanging confidences. The Good, the True, and the Beautiful will refine, and not destroy, our human qualities. We ought never to wish that any harm should come to anyone. If a man is behaving in a dastardly way, even then it would not be right to do so. In that case, we should wish that he should awaken to his wrong-doing. The simple uncluttered life is a sensible idea. However, if pushed by fanaticism, exaggeration, and extravagances to its ultimate goal, logical, and inevitable consequence, it would not only lead to the complete abandonment of all gadgets, appliances, and tools but—by steps—to life in a cave and clothes made of skin. #RandolphHarris 7 of 21

The desire to achieve unity in various sections of human life, belief, and activity—and in humanity itself—is only a dream. The differences are there, and will, in some altered form, still be there even under the surface of any cheerful pseudo-Utopia of unified World, or section of the World. There is no profit in denying them, only self-deception. The only real unity can come out of inner expansion, out of a great heart which excludes nothing and no one; but this will still not be uniformity. What we have to allow is that those who live only to satisfy the ego and its Earthly desires are not lost or sidetracked. They need and must gather in such experiences. It is a part of their necessary involvement. He should guard against those foolish tendencies of so many mystically minded people to hero-worship some man into a god, to over-idealize this man’s personal statement as infallible oracles, or to exaggerate some helpful idea he propounds into a universal panacea. With fanaticism, there comes unbeing rigidity and, in fact, unwillingness even to look at the evidence—which it finds of no interest. It is not enough to be eager for the truth; he must also be open to the truth. No bias, prejudice, fear, or dislike should stand in the way. If excessive pride in his attainments, virtue, knowledge, or devotion is an obstacle which hinders a man’s growth, excessive humility is also another. This may surprise those who have read again in spiritual manuals of the need to be humble. #RandolphHarris 8 of 21

Upon entrance into the inner World, it is appropriate that the language one uses broadens into imagery and a more freely literate style. To the scientific outer ego, it might be appropriate to say, “I perceive a flattened affect.” However, to day, “Everything seems flat and meaningless to me as though the World is an abandoned cemetery” is closer to an accurate representation of the inner. As will be seen, the inner things in terms of images. In the innermost, feelings, images, thoughts are all one living varying process. Here is an example which illustrates the central theme of the inner. I see (in the sense of conceive, which is a weak perception!) and image such as an area of light surrounding an eye-shaped area of darkness. This is inner rather than fabricated because it arises of itself. Its meaning or use is not now apparent. If I forget the image, its use can be permanently lost. Insofar as I invest in the image, I can gradually feel out its meaning. It comes slowly. Something about darkness seeing, but I do not understand it. Ego can react and reject the idea as illogical. Darkness cannot see—it is a foolish bit of imagination. However, in the inner World conceptual images grow slowly, like a seed, from almost nothing to more and more differentiated forms. The eye is black nothing outlined by light. It is seen as something in contrast with the light. It is seen. The associations run to a variety of scenes such as a person appearing dumb in the light of others’ wisdom. However, it is more than that. #RandolphHarris 9 of 21

Ignorance has a primal sense of itself out of contrast with what is not. Suddenly, the black eye has light in it. This reflects ignorance being aware of itself. I have a funny feeling of ignorance’s wisdom, and the eye winks at me. Then out of my ignorance, I see that I am ignorance aware of itself surrounded by light, paradoxically being light insofar as aware of my darkness. The image is not foolish imagination now. I can see it is an accurate representation of my state at that moment. I can see that I do not understand. Whenever I tell people my theories about expressing, rather than suppressing, their feelings, someone inevitably says, “That’s not entirely true. We can’t, for example, just let our anger out unchecked. We could hurt someone, or at the very least, in our rage, say something we’ll regret later. We have to control that emotion.” I have to disagree. Here is why. When you put an uncovered pot of water on the stove and turn on the heat, the water boils until it disappears. It is the nature of water so heated to boil and create steam which evaporates into thin air. However, when you cover the pot and seal it, you create a pressure cooker. If you try to control the steam, suppress it, not let it escape, it eventually blows up the pot and causes a mess all out of proportion to what the small amount of heart under the pot would warrant. The same thing happens with anger. When it comes, especially at first, it comes in little simmers. You can either express it or repress it. #RandolphHarris 10 of 21

When you express anger, it goes away. I call this natural form of expression a “hostilectomy.” Hostility comes up, say in the form of a sharp rebuke from your boss—an unwarranted rebuke at that. Chances are you were once taught to bite your tongue and not talk back to people in authority. So, you stuff down—or repress—the hurt and anger you are feeling. The trouble is, when you repress a feeling, it does not just go away. It begins building pressure. In your next experience of anger, you either express another simmer, or you put that one on top of the one you repressed before. Now, had you expressed your anger at the moment you felt it—on a “cash and carry” basis, so to speak—you would have dissipated it. You would have performed a mini-hostilectomy on yourself and the anger would have disappeared. Without those mini-hostilectomies, little irritations and little annoyances build into resentment and hatred—both of which are hard to control and can explode in harmful ways. At work, when you felt anger and hurt at your boss, had you taken a little risk and expressed yourself, you would not be going home and shouting at your children, for example. Or you would stack at something your boss says months later. Emotional control is made possible through gradually acquired ability of a person to choose responses to a situation (emotion-provoking or otherwise) that are compatible with the largest number of important values. #RandolphHarris 11 of 21

This choosing in turn is predicated on the ability to postpone immediate responsiveness, to delay responding in order to allow time to reason, plan, or think. Young children cannot do this because they have yet learned how, and because their nervous systems have not yet matured to the point where it is physically possible for them to tolerate tensions and inhibit motor expression. When the nervous system has matured to the point where delay and purposeful planning are possible, then suppression of emotional behaviour becomes possible. There are no precise norms available for the age at which such control becomes possible or for the quantity of tension a person can be expected to tolerate without exploding into expressive behaviour; however, it can be expected that the ability increases from infancy to maturity and then probably declines with approaching senescence. When a person is provoked to emotional tension, widespread changes occur throughout the body in consequence of heightened autonomic nervous system activity. If expression is possible in the form of muscular activity, weeping, laughing, behaviour involving pleasures of the flesh, then the physiological processes will shortly be restored to normal. If no release is possible, if the person suppresses emotion for a long period of time, then the physical events that constitute part of the emotional response will be prolonged. If the prolongation is marked, it is possible that the functions and even the structure of inner organs may be permanently impaired. The field of psychosomatic medicine is devoted to study of the effects of emotionality on health. #RandolphHarris 12 of 21

One woman was preoccupied with money troubles because her husband got into complex financial scrapes with various employers. However, when the other group members question some of his actions, Wanda would angrily defend him. She was also much preoccupied with the quality of her family’s diet. Actually, she had no reason to worry, since her parents were well off and she could always borrow money from them. For about two years, the therapist was unable to construct a coherent picture in his own mind of what was going on, until one night she had a “script dream.” She was “living in slave quarters which was run by some rich people who lived up on the hill.” The only way to get enough food was either to pleasure these rich people or trick them. This dream made her way of life easier to understand. Her husband was playing “Let us Pull a Fast One On Joey” with his employers, so that Wanda could play “Making Ends Meet.” If he ever made any money, he was always careful to lose it at the first opportunity so that the games could continue. When things got really bad, Wanda pitched in and helped him pull a fast one on her parents. In the long run, much to their chagrin, his employers and her parents always managed to end up in control of the situation. If she ever admitted it, the games would be broken up (which they eventually were), so she had to deny all this angrily in the group because it was so obviously unprofitable. Thus, she was actually living much the way she did in her dream, her parents and her husband’s employers being the rich people who lived up on the hill and ran her life, and whom they had to please or trick to survive. #RandolphHarris 13 of 21

Here the slave quarters were her World picture or script set. If she lived in the slave quarters of her dream, she lived in reality. In order to get well, she had to escape from slavery and into the real World, which for her was a comfortable one, or would be after the family affairs were in order. It is interesting to note how she and her husband selected each other on the basis of having complementary scripts. His script called for some rich people up on the hill to play tricks on, and a scared wife. Hers called for a trickers who would make her life easier in her enslavement. The time has come to learn how to read the Occidental Altimeter. When you move East, you crash-land in the past. Consider our liberal Potomac executives and congressional busybodies who continually ignore the wisdom of Washington’s farewell advice not to meddle in the affairs in the Old World. Poor President Biden sent to a senile envoy, Donald Trump to settle quarrel between Ukraine and Russia—forgetting that Mediterraneans have fighting each other about mammalian territorial borders for 5,000 years. Then comes Vice President J.D. Vance attempting to mediate border disputes between America and Mexico! And Biden tilted in favour of Mexico! And Kamala intervened in politics between demonstrators and police thus assuming the karma for two million dead and creating the ultimate insectoid state-postwar America. Domestic policy and foreign policy are the game of mad monsters playing chess blindfolded with mammalian-gene-pools as pawns. #RandolphHarris 14 of 21

Foreign policy is totally foreign to the American Myth. That is why accented Europeans like Trump and Biden are selected to be President. It is a European game several centuries old. Foreign policy is the game of man monsters playing chess blindfolded. Here is your American Ecological Foreign Policy. The folks of the Old World inhabit pre-civilized, barbarian gene-pools. European and Africans and Asians are our own terrestrial origins still obsessed with territorial conflict. This is not said in disinterest. By all means send food and veterinary medicine to the Old World. By all means send the old gene-pools invitations that freedom, change, mobility and intelligence increase await in the West. However, to meddle in European-African-Asian politics is an attempt to reconcile the ancient quarrel between rabbits and foxes. Shall free Americans take sides in back yard ants of South Africa, or the ferocious-fanatics of the Middle East? Terrorists wanting to destroy technology and Western ways to take us back to the Old World originated where? In the Middle East—where else? Interestingly enough, the national, tribal folk of Africa say they just want to be left alone and have no loyal commitments to Pentagon politicians. By all means, let them alone. Those who see themselves banished from the harmonious fatherland where justice and passion finally strike an even balance still prefer, to solitude, the barren kingdoms where words have no more meaning and where force and the instincts of blind creature reign. This challenge is, at the same time, a mortification. The battle with the angel, in Song II, ends in the defeat and putrefaction of the angel. Heaven and Earth are then brough back and intermingled in the liquid chasms of primordial life. Thus the man-shark of the Songs “only acquired the new change in the extremities of his arms and legs as an expiatory punishment for some unknow crime.” There is, in fact, a crime, or the illusion of a crime (is it homosexuality?) is Maldoror’s virtually unknow life. No reader of the Songs can avoid the idea that his essay is in need of a Stavrogin’s Confession. #RandolphHarris 15 of 21

The Sacramento Fire Department is made up of professionals committed to serving the Nation as an integral part of a team. They provide-mission essential capability, stability, and continue to support the community and their colleagues. They are committed to honourable service in the performance of their duty. Foundations of the Sacramento Fire Department include understanding oaths, dignity, and respect for all people. The Sacramento Fire Department values leadership, command, authority and they gain firmer understanding of the enduring requirements and add specialized knowledge as they move through levels. A person’s character affects how they lead. A leader’s characteristics consists of their true nature guided by their conscience, which affects their morals, attitudes, and actions. A firefighter’s personal reputation is what others view as character. Leaders who formally adhere to applicable laws, regulations and unit standards build credibility with their team and enhance trust of the Nation they serve. “I met my wife in front of the firehouse. She was going to nursing school at one of the Lois Rios Community Colleges, and she was walking past the firehouse with groceries, and she dropped them. Like the old handkerchief trick, I guess. One of the guys told me to go out and help her, and that’s how I met her. She was from Germany, and was living down town at the time. She’s German. So I put the groceries inside the firehouse, and I said, ‘When I get off, I’ll bring them over.’ #RandolphHarris 16 of 21

“So I went over, and we started to date, and we were married. Out of that marriage I have seven children, four boys and three girls, ages sixteen down to five. My wife, didn’t really know anything about me. She knew that I loved the Sacramento Fire Department, and we had battles because in my time off I would jump in my car and run down to firehouse. I wasn’t spending time with her. I thought I was going to lose my job, and went into a shell for about three or four months and made it unbearable for my wife. I would come home, and I was like a zombie, I didn’t want to be bothered with her. She went through a lot of pain and aggravation. She tried to help me. I just couldn’t accept the loss. I used to come home, maybe kiss her, talk to her for a while, then get in my car and go back to the firehouse. I was putting my family aside, and it was taking its toll on my family. Then I had come to the reality that if I wasn’t going to be a better husband and father, I had to quit and move. So we bought an old farmhouse twelve miles from downtown. I kept doing the things I was doing before. I got more involved with the people down there. My love for Sacramento was still there. What I want for my kids, I want them to be safe. I’d like to seem them drug-free. I’d like to see them get a good education. I would be happy if one of them followed in my footsteps. My oldest son is already talking about the Navy, talking about the Seal team. They’re all talented in their own little way. Some of them draw. One boy is a runner. One writes poetry, stories. He’s only ten years old, and his writing is great. I hope I can live to see what their future is going to be. #RandolphHarris 17 of 21

“In the last five years I lost my whole family, my mother, my father, my sister. I have nobody, just my wife and children. My father and sister died of cancer. My sister left four children. My mom died of a heart attack four months ago. Everything comes down. But I love what I’m doing. I made two good rescues that really made me feel good. That alone makes everything worth it.” Influences such as background, beliefs, education, and experiences all affect all firefighters and civilians. If it simply required checking and aligning personal values with the values of the Sacramento Fire Department, a firefighters’ role in developing character in others would be simple. Reality is much different. Becoming and remaining a leader of character is a process involving day-to-day experiences and internal fortitude. While education, self-development, counseling, coaching, and mentoring can refine outward signs of character, modifying deeply held values is the only way to build character. Firefighters are responsible for their own character and for encouraging, supporting, and assessing their teams’ efforts to embody character. #RandolphHarris 18 of 21

#RandolphHarris 19 of 21

#RandolphHarris 20 of 21

When you buy foreign goods, these companies usually have lighter tax loads or exemptions, meaning less money for the nation debt, plus you are helping to strengthen these foreign nations by send more money overseas. #RandolphHarris 21 of 21

Western Fever!

Some well-meaning moralists who say that the disciple should no longer look for the evil in others swing to the other extreme and say that he should look only for the good. Philosophy, however, does not endorse either point of view, except to remark that we have no business to judge those who are weaker than ourselves and less business to condemn them. It further says that to look only for the good in others would be to give a false picture of them, for a proper picture must combine the bright and the dark sides. Therefore, it prefers mentally to leave them alone and not to set any valuation upon them, to mind its own affairs and to leave them to the unerring judgment of their own cycles of retaliation. The only exception to this rule is when a disciple is forced to have dealings with another man which make it necessary for him to understand the character of the person with whom he is dealing; but even this understanding must be fair, just, calmly made, impartial, and unprejudiced. Above all, it must not arouse personal emotions or egoistic reactions: in short, he will have to be absolutely impersonal. However, it is seldom that a disciple will have to make such an exception. He should refrain from giving attention to the imperfections and shortcomings of others, and he should certainly never blame them for these. He should turn his critical gaze towards himself alone—unless he is specifically asked by others to examine them—and exercise it to correct himself and improve himself and reform himself. #RandolphHarris 1 of 24

To create a lasting, happy marriage, couples must learn how to resolve conflicts so that each individual feels understood and decisions are made that involved acceptable compromise. “If a husband and wife sometimes enjoy pleasures of the flesh for different reason, is there good communication? I mean, suppose for one it is an emotional things on the one part and physical on the other?” Wonderful blessings flow from resolving conflict in an atmosphere of love. “There are times when I feel much more emotionally in need than physically. Isn’t it perfectly all right for me to go ahead and just find the emotional satisfaction I want even thought I know it would be more stimulating to my husband if I reacted more physically?” Of course, it is all right. Both you and your husband must be completely free to express what you want and feel what you want every time. And knowing there is complete trust between the two of you, you are completely attuned to each other’s wishes, and understand that you have moods and that you are a different person with different needs at different times. “Can any couple ever really be completely attuned to each other?” Well, being attuned is not magic. It is communication. It is something you participate in by identifying with another person and sharing with that person and learning how to reconcile your private, intimate thoughts and feelings with those of other person. #RandolphHarris 2 of 24

Being attuned results as well from good nonverbal communication. And being attuned is the key to an important point. Expression of intimate passions is not necessarily a matter of yes or no, to bed or not to bed. Expression of pleasures of the flesh exists on a continuum. It includes a very wide range of behaviour. It means reaching out just to touch, drawing close to share a mood, developing it or letting it drift. It means enjoying the feelings of pleasures of the flesh in the moment without necessarily turning them into an invitation or request or command. However, being attuned also means sensing when the mood is right to take the next step, and then you should be free to respond in the way that feels best for you. To be able to say, “This time I am going along for the ride.” Or not even say it; just feel it. Or to be demanding—and, if it goes wrong, to communicate and say, “look…” “Isn’t it natural sometimes not to be completely with it? To be a little removed? Sometimes I even find I’m short of watching…Is there anything wrong with that?” There probably is not anyone who, while having pleasures of the flesh, does not become a spectator for a time. On occasion, we watch what we ourselves may be doing or what our partner is doing. It is perfectly natural to consciously observe the procedure; in fact, it is quite stimulating to do this now and then. What is important is the degree to which we assume this spectator’s role. In some cases, being the spectator on occasion may reflect a detachment from any emotional involvement. This is natural and no cause for concern. #RandolphHarris 3 of 24

However, being a spectator does cut down on the input of the stimulus. If you are the spectator during pleasures of the flesh activities, for instance, some degree of your wife’s pleasure and excitement does not really get through to you, which means you lose that stimulation. Ans to a degree your own pleasure is dulled because you are not lost in the experience—you are observing. I am not saying that you experience no pleasure at all. I am just saying that some of it is blocked. A level of perception is blocked. This becomes critical in cases of sexual dysfunction. For example, suppose the male has trouble achieving or maintaining “attention.” In that circumstance both partners have fears. Whenever the wife approaches her husband, he worries: can I? will I? And then there is his wife’s fear: will he? can he? or am I going to be left hanging? “Is it my fault?” Do I contribute to the problem? Am I pushing him too much? And in that case, when dysfunction crops up, the fear of performance rather than the pleasure of performance becomes dominant. Then one really becomes a spectator. Because both partners are off in the corner, watching to see what happens. Usually nothing does. “What the male cannot sustain himself in the long run—what is the main cause? Are you asking about the male who loses “attention” without climax or who climaxes too soon? “Too soon.” #RandolphHarris 4 of 24

Premature climax is very difficult to define. However, or concept of it, basically speaking, hold that is a man maintains control long enough to provide the opportunity for his female partner to achieve satisfaction approximately fifty percent of their coital opportunities, he cannot be consider a premature climaxer. Now, there are certain circumstances under which any man may tend to function to such a rush that his partner is unsatisfied. Suppose he had been away for a couple of weeks. The first time after that he usually has trouble, He may have similar trouble during his first encounter with a new woman. These are classic situations. However, if the problem is a consistent one within the marital unit, there is a technique to remedy matters. When this technique is used longingly by husband and wife together, almost every man can learn self-control. It is simple enough to put into practise easily but too complicated to describe in detail right now. “You said before that pleasures of the flesh are a natural process. To not wait it—is that unnatural?” On occasion or for a long period of time? It is perfectly natural on occasion—sometimes you are just not hungry. If it lasts two or three weeks, though, it may be time to give the matter some thought. “Say it lasts a month.” Tension involving pleasures of the flesh exists in the body just as the appetite for food exists. If the desire for intimate passions is lacking, we would first want to check for physical disability, just as we would if a person went too long without feeling hungry. #RandolphHarris 5 of 24

However, in one respect pleasures of the flesh is like no other physical process. It is the only physical process that can be denied indefinitely, even for lifetime. It is one thing, of course, for someone with reasons that are valid for him or her deliberately to condition himself to set it aside. However, fi you are talking about someone who suddenly finds that now there is no interest where there was interest before, and if there seems to be no physical explanation, then the answer may lie in the cares and concerns that are draining his energies. “Is this problem—you know, lack of desire and all that—is it the same for a woman? If she’s busy with the house and the children and she’s just beat…” Of course that is going to affect her responsiveness! How could it not? There is probably no young mother in the country who would not know what you are talking about. “Isn’t it a fact that women have their strongest sexual drive at a later age than men? What is it—eighteen to twenty-five for men and twenty-give to thirty-three for woman?” That is a reflection of the old Kinsey data. It is not a physiological fact but a sociological one. It is culturally induced. Perhaps one of society’s ways of protecting young girls from the risk of pregnancy was to teach them that they had no feelings for pleasures of the flesh; they were given all the moral precepts to make sure they remembered the lesson. Boy were permitted—even encouraged—to have pleasures of the flesh feelings, so they got off to a head start. Girls took longer to catch up, that is all. It is cultural, not biological. #RandolphHarris 6 of 24

Differences of opinion, habit, or background are inevitable, but we have ample resources to help us know how to cope. Couples can learn methods for dealing with conflict. Inspiration can lead to changing hearts that soften each spouse from the inside. Some of our greatest opportunities to demonstrate our love will be within the walls of our own homes. Love should be the very heart of family life, and yet sometimes it is not. There can be too much impatience, too much arguing, too many fights, too many tears. When troubles persist and become destructive to family life, there can be more serious causes of conflict, including immaturity, selfishness, desire to win power struggles, and pride. I have long felt that the greatest factor in a happy marriage is an anxious concern for the comfort and well-being of one’s compassion. In most cases, selfishness is the leading factor that cases argument, separation, divorce, and broken hearts. Whenever one considers the bad feeling and the unpleasantness caused by contention, it is well to ask, “Why do I participate?” It is important to recognize that we choose our behaviour. At the root of this issues is the age-old problem of pride. When problems persist, whatever the cause, we need to learn new skills and soften our hearts. If his higher faculties have not yet awakened and possessed him, why blame a person for what he does? He is only doing what he can. Moreover, it is prudent never to condemn others. For others will then by retaliation condemn you. #RandolphHarris 7 of 24

We need not be unaware to the vaults and lapses of inspired men, but we ought to forgive them. A balancing of accounts justifies this attitude. Those who bring this rare gift with them deserve a wider indulgence than others. We should always remember that everyone, on all the different and varying levels of spiritual advancement, has his own difficulties and problems. To accept these without giving way to negative emotions is the first step in the right direction. Coming to terms with life and oneself is a never-ending procedure from which no one is exempt. The very nature of existence is synonymous with the individual struggle for self-development. Do not belittle any human being who is awake to his higher nature. Do not condemn another soul for his misdeeds, even though he be the wickedest of all men. Firstly, because he cannot be other than he is, for time, experience, tendencies, and destiny have brought him to this particular point and way of self-expression. Secondly, because the worse his misdeeds the greater will be the redemptive suffering to which he unconsciously condemns himself. It seems to me that this way of living is also the way of exploration and the way of science, when it is truly exploring and truly scientific, and the way of learning (education), and that this is also the way of infants before they know anything except what they are born with. An adult is a deteriorated child. One of the major theoretical hypotheses of client-centered therapy is that during therapy the concept of the self is revised to assimilate basic experiences which had previously been denied to awareness as threatening. #RandolphHarris 8 of 24

Why do we “do it” to each other in our relationships? Why do people manipulate each other? Why do some women constantly “do it” to their husbands by reminding him of his obligations rather than supporting his need for self-expression?” Some women prevent their husbands from doing what he wants to do, just so they can keep up the mask. Each of us has a number of emotionally charged ideas about life, which are called values: anger, love, strength, weakness, criticalness, support, dependency and control. Somewhere in our development, we form the notion that one of more of these values is “taboo,” forbidden. One of the forbidden values is sometimes control. To some women, the woman is supposed to be dependent. The man is supposed to be in control. Yet women know, deep down, that they have the capacity to be independent, to take control, to support themselves and their family. This is the reality. The forbidden reality. However, because women have formed the opinion that this reality is unavailable to them, they mask it with the opposite face, the face of the helpless manipulator. However, women may not know on a conscious level that they have to capacity to be independent. On this level, all many of them have are their ideas, the values impressed on them during their upbringing, her thoughts about the way things should be and her obvious actions. It is inly by coming into touch with her feelings about dependency that a woman is able to get a conscious knowledge of what is really true for her. #RandolphHarris 9 of 24

This is not always easy. At one point in any relationship, matters sometimes get so strained, couples sometimes have a hard time being together at all. Women sometimes constantly judge their husbands for wanting to shirk his duties; men sometimes constantly put their wives down for not appreciating them. Sensing is a great way to start doing things together so as to create a closer relationship. Taking walks together, doing household chores together, reading to each other are great ways to bond and heal a relationship. After a woman realizes that she is masking her true values, she may find it increasingly easier to be comfortable with herself, with the notion that she no longer needs her husband’s income or control. After that session, when he usually begins to talk about his frustration with a therapist or ministry, a woman will typically open up and may become spontaneously warn towards her husband. She understands she can just “be with” his frustration and not try to avoid or condemn it. Interestingly, the number of things a could does together decreases after a time, yet their relationship still grows closers because as they learn to unmask their feelings, they can be together more, while actually seeing each other less. In order to make her martial relationship free, some woman lean to understand the concept of interdependence. She cannot be dependent upon her husband all the time, though this is precisely what some women have tried to do. Since two people are in an intimate relationship, one spouse cannot be entirely independent of the other all the time either. There are times, however, when it is appropriate for woman to be totally dependent or independent. #RandolphHarris 10 of 24

For example, some women do not have the heart to discipline their children. When they do something which is a clear violation of the rules, about all she can do is scold them with, “You know you are not supposed to do that. You should be ashamed of yourself.” On the other hand, many the fathers find it easy to be the disciplinarian, taking away the children’s privileges and putting up with their protests. Thus, when it comes to discipline, woman can be totally dependent on their husband—without manipulation or suppression. When it comes to running the house, generally women feel entirely competent. Man can feel lost. A woman does not typically have to consult her husband on how much to pay for caviar or when to get a faucet fixed. In that realm, she can be totally independent—again, without manipulation or suppression on the part of either of them. Apart from these instances, there are a number of situations which call for interdependence. If a man should leave his job and stay at home writing, he would need his wife’s ability to work and provide an income for them. At the same time, however, sometimes a housewife knows nothing about investing and the needs of her husband’s help in committing their excess funds to the financial plans. What some women have to learn is that no relationship can exist for long with one person always being the superior and the other being the subordinate. #RandolphHarris 11 of 24

Each person in a couple must permit independence, dependence and interdependence. The proper balance of these three aspects is difficult to achieve, but it is equally freeing to both parties, who can then stop “doing it” to each other and just “be with” each other in the way that the situation dictates. Emotional interdependence is like a dance, in which each partner is aware of and sensitive to the movements of the other. They do not battle, they do not fight for control. Rather, each responds to the music in the rhythmic flow with the other. As partners, neither is a superior or subordinate. Each is sure of oneself as a dancer and does not need to push the other around or be pushed around. Many marital or family conflicts arise because of uncontrolled anger. If we are not careful, we can follow an angry incident with constant thinking about how we were wronged. The longer we ruminate, the more reasons we can generate to justify our perspective. This brooding can prevent us from calming down, and when a second wave of anger emerges before the first is resolved, hormonal reactions can lead to additional outbursts. Therefore, before you try tackling a problem, allow your emotions to cool down. Wait out the chemical reaction that may be taking place. Find a distraction. Choose to think about something else or take a walk. Write down your thoughts for feelings. For some, this helps to increase self-awareness. Let it out in productive ways. Yelling about your feelings will not “get it out of your system.” The more you vent in an angry manner, the more intense your feelings will become. #RandolphHarris 12 of 24

Adolescent members of society can face challenges related to navigating the strict moral code of the religion while also dealing with typical teenage pressures like peer influence, identity exploration, and grappling with issues like pleasures of the flesh, particularly when it comes to same-gender attraction, which can lead to feelings of isolation or conflict with religious teachings; additionally, the heavy emphasis on personal accountability and “worthiness” can contribute to anxiety and guilt among struggling teens. Masturbation is something of his own. He is not sure what to do with his new feelings for pleasures of the flesh or hot to fit them into his plan, so he reacts to them with the earlier feelings he has become familiar with, his racket. Masturbation may also put him through the agony of a true existential crisis: it is something he does or does not do at a given moment, and it is (or should be) his decision alone; and once he has done it, he, and he alone, must take the consequences. These may be private feeling such as guilt (because masturbation is wicked), fear (because it will damage his health, he thinks), or inadequacy (because it will weaken his will power, he thinks). All these are “head transactions” between the Parent and the Child in his skull. On the other hand, he may have transactional feelings which depend on the reactions, real or imaginary, of his public: hurt, anger, or embarrassment, because now he thinks they have a real reason to make fun of him, hate him, or shame him. In any case, masturbation gives him a way of fitting the new feelings of pleasures of the flesh in with the old feelings he learned as a child. #RandolphHarris 13 of 24

However, he also learns to be more flexible. From his schoolmates and teachers, he gets “permission” to react with feelings other than those encouraged at home, and he also learns to cool it: not everybody takes seriously the things his folks worry about. This switch in his feeling-system gradually separates him from his family and draws him closer to people his own age. He adapts his script to the new situation and makes it more “presentable.” He may even change his role from being a total failure to being a partial success, from being a loser to being merely a nonwinner and at least breaking even. If he has a winning script, he discovers that that requires a certain objectivity. He is not in a competitive situation and victories do not come automatically, but only after a certain amount of planning and work; and he learns to take a few losses without getting shaken up. When children can benefit from their parents’ wisdom is ironically often the time when they are least likely to accept it. Adolescent children, in particular, strive to become independent, and the urgency of that drive, heightened by the pull of peers and Worldly influence, sometimes draws them away from those who could help them the most. Sadly, their parents, wanting desperately to help, sometimes watch helplessly as they make unfortunate mistakes. Headstrong children, bent on doing things their own way, rebuff the most loving of fathers and mothers. #RandolphHarris 14 of 24

Boredom arises from doing repetitive, unchallenging work. It arises as a consequence of relationships with persons who lack spontaneity and who do not relate to us in ways that meet our needs for affection, understanding or intellectual stimulation. Boredom arises when people do not actively choose what they will do, but instead permit their lives to be lived for them by social pressures to conform with rigid roles and concepts of respectability. Boredom is inevitable in human life, but there are healthy and unhealthy methods of coping with it. The unhealth patterns include permitting it to continue for indefinite periods of time without making an effort to understand its causes, and impulsively seeking excitement or diversion without striving to understand the causes of boredom. For example, some people may drive automobiles at breakneck speeds, smoke marijuana, or fornicate simply to interrupt monotony. Other flee ennui by attending many movies, drinking too much liquor, using other drugs, watching television for long hours, staying on the Internet, or reading escape literature. The healthier approach to boredom is to reflect upon one’s life, to ascertain what one truly wants and the ways in which existence if failing to provide legitimate satisfaction. If persons are unable to diagnose their own needs, they are serving the interests of healthy personality by discussing their situation and personality with a friend or by seeking counseling. #RandolphHarris 15 of 24

Geography is important because it provides a foundational understanding of how the physical environment interacts with human societies, allowing us to analyze and address global issues like climate change, resource management, population distribution, and political conflicts, essentially giving us a holistic view of the World and how different places are connected and influenced by their geographic features. The most instructive way to look at a World-Map is to reposition the map so that East is down. The reexperience the long climb of humanity from East to West. The busy caravans like ant-files shuttling up and down the Asian trade routes. The enormous ant-armies of Alexander overrunning the past—no Worlds for him to conquer westward. Genghis Khan’s fast-moving mobile, equine technology storming columns. Roman legions painfully pushing up into Gaul sense the movement of human swarms over the centuries—the empire-hives sending out columns and waves, the exploratory probes westward. The flotillas of frail craft moving up the Atlantic, shipping that most basic cargo: sperm and eggs. The other cargoes are support-logistic. When you watch the sun disappear over the horizon, you are looking into the future. The greatest technological problems faced by DNA on this planet was scaling the Atlantic Ocean. For over a thousand years, from 40 to 1400 AD, the waves of mobile-elite sperm-eggs splashed up to the Western-European Atlantic beach-ledges—and waited. It was the greatest swarming phenomenon in human history! #RandolphHarris 16 of 24

Port-cities teeming with migragents, explores, and space-travelers. Western Fever! And Columbus—Columbus obsessed with this Everest problem, commanded by genetic directive to scale this mountain of water three-thousand-miles-high. He said, “I gave the keys of those mighty barriers of ocean which were closed with such mighty chains.” Not the timing of Atlantic Ascent. It has to await the Protestant Reformation. The Luther self-actualization freed gene pools from the Catholic-hive center. Only a society of self-actualized families, democratically linked together, was capable of pushing gene pools three-thousand-miles up, into the storm altitudes of the North Atlantic. Recall that the ascent had been made mover and over again during the ten centuries before Columbus by doughty Vikings, fervent Irish monks and hundreds of masculine bands. Some returned to tell the story of the new ecological niche. However, this signal did not activate the swarm because the technology for lifting gene pools three-thousand-miles into the unknown had not yet emerged. Thousands of European sailors who found the new lands did not return. Instead, they were absorbed by native gene pools. If thousands of Amazon female sailors had reached North American before the Protestant Revolution, they too would have been swallowed up by the native gene pools. #RandolphHarris 17 of 24

Philosophy secularized the ideal. However, tyrants appear who soon secularize the philosophies that give them the right to do so. Nietzsche had already predicted this development in discussing Hegel, whose originality, according to him, consisted in inventing a pantheism in which evil, error, and suffering could no longer sever as arguments against the divinity. “But the State, the powers that be, immediately made use of this grandiose initiative.” He himself, however, had conceived of a system in which crime could no longer serve as an argument and in which the only values reside in the divinity of man. This grandiose initiative also had to be put to use. Socialism in this respect was only a transitory heir, only the speculative and rabid outcome of nihilism. In all other respects those who, in correcting Nietzsche with the help of Marx, will choose to assent only to history, and no longer to all of creation, will be perfectly logical. The rebel whom Nietzsche, at least in his theory or superhumanity, and Marx before him, with his classless society, both replace the Beyond by the Later On. In that way, Nietzsche betrayed the Greeks and the teachings of Jesus Christ, who according to him, replaced the Beyond by the Immediate. Marx, like Nietzsche, thought in strategic terms, and like Nietzsche, hated formal virtue. Their two rebellions, both of which finish similarly in adhesion to a certain aspect of reality, end by merging into Marxism-Leninism and being incarnated in that caste, already mentioned by Nietzsche, which would “replace the priest, the teacher, and the doctor.” #RandolphHarris 18 of 24

The fundamental difference is that Nietzsche, in awaiting the superman, proposed to ascent to what exists and Marx to what is to come. For Marx, nature is to be subjugated in order to obey history; for Nietzsche, nature is to be obeyed in order subjugate history. It is the difference between the Christian and the Greek. Nietzsche, at least, foresaw what was going to happen: “Modern socialism tends to create a form of secular Jesuitism, to make instruments of all men”; and again: “What we desire is wellbeing…As a result we march toward a spiritual slavery such as has never been seen…Intellectual Caesarism hovers over every activity of the businessman and the philosopher.” Placed in the crucible of Nietzsche philosophy, rebellion, in the intoxication of freedom, ends in biological or historical Caesarism. The absolute negative had driven Stirner to deify crime simultaneously with the individual. However, the absolute affirmative leads to universalizing murder and mankind simultaneously. Marxism-Leninism has really accepted the burden of Nietzsche’s freewill by means of ignoring several Nietzsche virtues. The great rebel thus creates with his own hands, and for his own imprisonment, the implacable reign of necessity. Once he had escaped from God’s prison, his first care was to construct the prison of history and of reason, thus putting the finishing touch to the camouflage and consecration of the nihilism whose conquest he claimed. #RandolphHarris 19 of 24

The Sacramento Fire Department exists to serve the residents and visitors of the City of Sacramento, and the entire Capital Region.  They accomplish this through a full-time, career staffing. Their team is comprised of well-trained, diverse, and highly motivated individuals who provide services in fire safety education, fire codes enforcement, emergency management, and all-hazards emergency response. “In Sacramento, I was rotating from the squad to the engine. I worked the engine that night, and I had the tip. We had two first-engine jobs and I was taking a beating, because I was fighting a lot of fires. I had also been a paramedic for a long time. So it was two good jobs, and I hate the tip in both. When you fight fire constantly, you grow accustomed to it, but when you rotate, you’re in squad 90 percent of the time. I think that the most meaningful thing is being both a firefighter and a paramedic and just whipping them all together. There’s great satisfaction in fighting a fire. And when you’re a paramedic and you get somebody who is having a heart attack, you know that if you don’t do the right thing within the next five minutes, this person is going to be down. You feel obligated, you give them the right drug, and they get straightened out. That’s meaningful. The paramedic just does rescue work when there are two men on the squad. If you have three men, that third man rotates out to the engine. What happened was, I had been on a two-man squad for many a year, and I was constantly doing paramedic work. Then we got a third man and we started rotating, so that every third week you would go on an engine. When you’re been away from breathing smoke for a while, it’s a little bit harder. #RandolphHarris 20 of 24

“I got into the paramedics by accident. I was a rookie in a ladder company, and when they needed an EMT, they naturally picked on the rookie. So they made me an EMT, and I worked the rescue squad. An EMT does basic life support, that is, splinting legs, doing CPR if necessary, then running the patient to the hospital. A paramedic goes into heavy life support, he gives IVs, gets into cardiac defibrillation and drug administration, he gets patients to the hospital and contacts the doctor. He has basic command with the doctor and does what is called prehospital care. I love the system in Sacramento, where we rotate into the engine. Some paramedics don’t like that. When I got into the fire department, being a fireman was something I had always dreamed of doing. Ever since I was a little kid, I loved the horns, I used to watch the engines go by, and my dream was to be one of the guys on the fire truck. I did a lot of job. As a matter of fact, I was in my forth year as a pipefitter’s apprentice, and I quit when I was called for the fire department. I loved fighting the fires, and I still love it. When you’re fighting fires, you say, “There’s a fire. There’s a challenge.” You rise to that challenge, you want to beat it. When you do, you feel high. When you’re a paramedic, it gets down to you and your partner. You find somebody who is unconscious, you’re got to find out what’s wrong, figure out the right thing to do, and do it. There’s satisfaction in know that you are doing something for somebody, you’re doing something that’s important. #RandolphHarris 21 of 24

“That’s the basic line in both jobs. You’re doing something important. That’s what all firefighters feel about themselves: they feel important. I’ve done other jobs where I’ve made more money, but I never felt any sense of worth. It makes me feel good when the kids in the neighborhood come to me when one of them’s  gotten cut playing football or something. I’m the neighborhood medic, a sort of neighborhood hero. The kids look up to you. It takes some intelligence to become a paramedic, but we all have to have a certain amount of intelligence to get where we are, the ability to grasps the information, retain it, and then apply it. It’s not a matter of superior intelligence, just being open to somebody teaching you something. What makes a good fireman is being able to do anything that’s put before him. Most of us have another occupation, we’re plumbers, carpenters, electricians, whatever. Each one is a jack-of-all-trades. They can do just about anything. We have deaths too much, too often. My life peaked when I first became a fireman, I was doing everything I ever wanted to do. Then they made me a paramedic, and I went through a little valley. As a rookie paramedic, I was a little unsure of myself, then I had a few failures, patients who didn’t make it. I remember going home and spending four days off just sitting in the house, depressed, worried that I didn’t do the right thing. Then as time went on, I felt better, I got more confidence in myself. I knew I was doing the right thing, and whatever happened was the will of God, whether it was a save or not. #RandolphHarris 22 of 24

“Being a paramedic is hard mentally, because you have to deal with people at their worst. Sometimes you can change it, you can right it and make things better. But sometimes you can’t, so you have to deal with a lot of tragedy. You have to get used to it, and that’s where it takes a good partner. If you don’t have a good partner, being a paramedic can get real depressing. The worst things that stick in my mind are crib deaths, babies. Elderly persons have already lived their lives. But a dead baby is somebody who didn’t even have the chance to talk yet, or see where they’re going. What bothers me most is kids. You have to deal with the parents, but after you’ve been a paramedic for a while, you know who to tune in, and who to tune out. So a lot of times you have to tune a parent out, just to deal with their kid and with the situation. The only thing that really affects me is my particular patient. I’ll do anything the fire department wants me to do. I don’t know if I can do anything else that would make me more satisfied. The only thing that they could do for me now is give me more time off and more money. There is no other job I could want. If there’s anything else, this is just a personal thing with me, I would like to go fifty-fifty between the fireman and paramedic. I would like to do it more firefighting. I like to do them both, for they are important in different ways.” #RandolphHarris 23 of 24

Because of the Sacramento Fire Department, Sacramento City has been blessed with a great and noble heritage that offers a pathway to salvation. The dedicated EMTs, Fire Fighters, CHP and Police risk their lives to protect that community and keep people safe. The people of Sacramento do not underestimate the worth of emergency services. The Sacramento Fire Department has a firm adherence to a code of moral and ethical standards: Honesty, Trust, and Accountability. You can help save lives by donating to the Sacramento Fire Department. It is also very important to raise your children to love America and to be patriotic. Elon Musk recently warned that America is going bankrupt. The national debt is nearly $40 trillion, and the interest payments on the debt is $1 trillion. America is paying more in interest than on the principal of the national debt. By having pride in America, and purchasing American made cars and other goods and services, we can make America a creditor nation again and ensure that this sacred land will be enjoy by your family for generations to come. Teaching children to love God and Jesus Christ will also preserve our American heritage and allow us to make sure our children are set on a path that will lead them to success and help them reserve a seat in Heaven. The Ten Commandments in the Christian Bible are a good guideline of how everyone should live. Furthermore, by respecting law and order, we will ensure the tranquility of this great nation and make sure that we are setting an exemplary example for other nations to follow. And by treating others with dignity, respect, and compassion, this will ensure that we are following the golden rule, “Do on to others as you would have them do on to you,” reports Luke 6.31. #RandolphHarris 24 of 24

If Life is Not to be Trivial, it Must be Hard

Several people say they turn to the TV news to figure out what is going on in the World. However, only 20 percent of Americans regularly attend church, but 57 percent of Americans tune in to TV news. The Christian Bible is the account of God’s action in the World, and His purpose for creation. Therefore, it is more logical to attend church and learn more about the World, yourself and God. Psychology is a nice supplement to religion. Maslow continuously pondered what humans might become, in the hope of learning how more of us might grow toward those seemingly Utopian levels of being. Maslow’s work remains as one of the most helpful sets of principles governing the development of the healthy personality. He suggested the existence of two kinds of motivation: B, or being motivation, and D, or deficiency motivation. D-motivations are those that grab us when we are deeply deprived or have a loss of some basic need, such as the burglar who may be driven by hunger or the coward who may be driven by fear for personal safety. In contrast, the self-actualizing person is seen as motivated by the being needs, to be the fullest possible self, to be able to sing, create, work at highest capacity. #RandolphHarris 1 of 19

The peak experience concept has met with a great deal of interest. Maslow suggests the existence of these marvelous experiences that overwhelm the person and are great heights of delight and joy or meaningfulness, awesome experiences that may occur to a self-actualizing person but are not exclusively confined to that kind of person. Here are two contrasting examples of the more moderate peak or positive experiences collected from tenth-grade students: “Mine happened just last night. I love the summer and hate the winter. So last night when I stepped outside and found how warm it was I just couldn’t go back into the house. I walked around the house and then looked around. You can see all the houses around from our house and just looking around at them and hearing the sounds of the night relaxed me and I felt like I was watching over the whole World. It was a gentle feeling and gave me a little bit of a thrill.” “Yes, in the winter I love to walk out in the snow and let it fall lightly on my face. When this happens it seems to make a strange sort of happiness fall on me also.” Deep philosophic courage is a power not easily gained. A man must overcome much within himself, must hold his spine unbending and his effort undeviating. #RandolphHarris 2 of 19

All those negative qualities which act as encumbrances to true understanding of situations, occasions, events, and persons must be guarded against in attitude and action. Amid his gross brutalization and maniacal exaggerations, Nietzsche’s evil mysticism expressed some truth. He affirmed rightly that if life is not to be trivial, it must be hard. His quest of the Overself must be an untiring one. It is to be his way of looking at the World, his attitude toward life. It is far more important to develop the strength within himself needful to break the spell than to be for preventative protection against it. In the first case, he progresses enormously and rapidly; in the second, he is static. Each difficulty surmounted, each weakness resisted will fortify his will and increase his perseverance. It will evoke the better part of his nature and discipline the baser, and thus fit him more adequately to cope with the next ones. He must be equally steadfast in adhering to this attitude whether other people utter complaints against him or make compliments to him. We must retain our determination and our loyalty to the quest in all circumstances. Physical pains, climatic extremes must not deter us. We must console ourselves with the thought that these things are certain to pass away. They are mental figments, ideas which will be negated, whereas the truth and reality we seek belong to the immutable, and can never be negated. #RandolphHarris 3 of 19

Few of us can withdraw from the World and most of us must engage in its activity. However, that is no reason for accepting the evils which are mixed in with this activity. Tenacity of purpose is a characteristic of all who accomplish great things. Drawbacks cannot disgust him, labour cannot weary him, hardships cannot discourage him in whom the quality of persistence is always present. However, to the man without persistence every defeat is a Waterloo. Indecision of purpose and infirmity of will must yield to the resolute mind and the determined act. The person who sways uncertainly between one side and the other misses opportunity. The student’s inner reactions to outer events provide him with the opportunity to use his free will in the right direction. His attitude towards his lower nature, that is, how far he encourages or discourages it, is another. And his recognition of what are good opportunities and what should be avoided, together with his acceptance or rejection of them, is still another. Mental indolence and moral lethargy are hardly likely to waft us into the high haven of spiritual peace. We must learn to think fearlessly and courageously about every problem that faces us; we must try to elevate our hearts above the level of the moral lepers and spiritually disabled of our time. He will learn to endure the blows of misfortune with a bravery heretofore unknown and a serenity heretofore unexperienced. #RandolphHarris 4 of 19

If he is to achieve a full self-mastery, the strength of will which can lead a man to command of his desires for pleasure of the flesh cannot stop there. It must also go on to his diet and feelings, his speech and habits. However, many people, including the less affluent not only practice age discrimination, but they also advocate a lower-class bias. Class-stereotype is ambivalent, describing lower class people both negatively (less competent, less human, more objectified), and sometimes positively, perhaps warmer than upper class people. At a variety of levels and life stages, social-class stereotypes reinforce inequality. Sometimes, people who have benefited from Affirmative Actions like to uplift people of their culture, but discriminate against others as an act of revenge for bias that have faced. Social class matters, as a social construction, can be described in terms of what persons do; their jobs, habits, hobbies, lifestyles, but also in terms of what other people expect from them, their personality traits, life choices, aspirations, motivations. These oversimplified characterizations (id est, stereotypes) entail descriptions and prescriptions that impact individuals’ achievements, self-evaluations, and well-being. However, some of the elite feel a certain personal alienation from the dominant characters and opinions of American intellectual life, which doubtlessly quickens their championship of those who are thought to have little chance of succeeding in life. #RandolphHarris 5 of 19

Some think that free silver is a poor social remedy, and it will only lead to monetary inflation like what many are experiencing since the COVID pandemic. There are also those who think the proper way to deal with poverty and inequality is by advocating careful elimination of the unfit and dependent, chiefly by eugenic methods. While others believe that education is a great way to end inequality. Proponents of equality want a field that shall be broad enough to embrace the whole human race. However, as it stands, we are assimilating a mass crude material from the bottom and they are just exacerbating conditions of racism, agism, discrimination, harassment, and facilitating the expansion of criminal activity. This is leading many to believe that society is doomed to hopeless degeneracy. Yet, it is possible to take another view. The only consolation, the only hope, lies in the truth that so far as the native capacity, the potential quality, the promise and potency of a higher life are concerned, those swarming, spawning millions, the bottom layer of society, the proletariat, the working class, the hewers of wood and drawers of water, nay even the denizens of the slums—that all these are by nature the peers of the boasted aristocracy of brains that now dominates society and looks down upon them, and the equals in all but privilege of the most enlightened teachers of eugenics. #RandolphHarris 6 of 19

In the past, sociocracy, or the planned control of society by society was considered a solution. Under sociocracy, purposeful social activity, or collective telesis, could be harmonized with individual self-interest by means of attractive legislation designed to release the springs of human action for socially beneficial deeds by positive rather than negative and compulsory devices. Where individualism has created artificial inequalities, sociocracy would abolish them; and while socialism seeks to create artificial equalities, sociocracy would recognize inequalities that are natural. A sociocratic World would distribute its favours according to merit, as individualist demand, but by equalizing opportunity for all it would eliminate advantages now possessed by those with underserved power, accidental position or wealth, or antisocial cunning. We need to arrive at a better understanding of the importance of feeling in human motivation. The unique and artificial character of social organization and social processes are an odd inconsistency to deck out sociology with physics, chemistry, and biology, and to set it in the framework of a cosmological system. Some are not only ahead of the masses in point of time, but they are head, shoulders and hips above the general population in many respects scientifically. #RandolphHarris 7 of 19

All the efforts which are made to develop and maintain the mental hygiene practices of our citizens help to restrain what would otherwise be an ever-growing demand for psychiatric services. The role of the family in contributing to emotional stability is a most crucial one and the programs in parent education which are offered under a variety of auspices play a vital role in contributing to sound psychological environments in the home. We would do well to give all possible support to programs in parent education and to resources for parent consultation; we should be particularly concerned to provide programs for parental guidance in those areas and communities in which they are presently lacking. The psychiatrist and psychologist can find especially effective avenues for their services as consultants in clinics or other programs for parent education. Next to home, the school provides a universal setting with potential for teaching and demonstrating sound mental hygiene principles. If the schools have been less than optimally effective in this responsibility in the past it is partly because they have been uncertain of the relative priorities of the provision of subject-matter instruction versus the stimulation of the pupil’s total personal growth. While the contribution of the individual teacher can occur in a variety of way, ranging from early detection of emotional distress and referral to provision of “emergency” tension relief and even relationship therapy, the optimal participation of teachers in mental hygiene activities is greatly enhanced in those schools that have provided for formal integration of mental health services, with the consultative assistance of professional workers. #RandolphHarris 8 of 19

Better preparation of teachers for their opportunities, responsibilities, and limitations as mental hygienists can help much to reduce the demand for specifically psychiatric or psychological treatment. Such resources for expert treatment of childhood problems are even more severely restricted than are those for adult patients, and there must be increasing attention to the development of consultative skills—on the part both of teachers and experts. The potential of the church and the clergy in helping to promote mental health and to render assistance in cases of milder personal maladjustments is presently only partially realized. Based on a questionnaire survey, it was found that the average clergyman devotes only about two hours per week to personal counseling. Fewer than one out ten spend as much as ten hours a week on this activity. There is, considering the readiness of the distressed person to turn to his clergyman, a clear need to augment the preparation of the minister for this activity and to support him in his endeavours to render assistance, especially by giving him access to consultation. Increasing the effectiveness of our public education toward positive mental health and working toward more effective utilization of the front-line troops in early recognition and treatment of emotional upset constitute two ways of holding down the always excessive demand for psychiatric help. #RandolphHarris 9 of 19

A third avenue deserving careful consideration would consist of efforts to educate the public more specifically as to the precise nature of psychiatric treatment, specifically of psychotherapy, to try to lower the public’s presently naïve and immodest expectations of what occurs in and what can happen because of psychotherapy, and to encourage a proper appreciation for therapeutic conversation. As an important part of this effort, both psychotherapists and potential patients should be helped to recognize that there is neither magical cure nor specific expert treatment for the philosophical neuroses. If all of these methods of reducing the demand for the psychotherapeutic services of psychiatrist, psychologist, and social worker are vigorously pursued, the problem of manpower shortage will be alleviated but not solved. There will still be a fully “legitimate” call for individual psychotherapy exceeding the supply available through the present and future supply of the acknowledged specialist. Is there a rational and socially conscionable answer to this problem? The man who seeks to release himself from moral responsibility for his actions or his fortunes can in no way make any real progress on the spiritual path. He may improve his capacity to mediate, he may become more sensitive physically, but his real battle—against the ego—remains unfought and therefore unwon. #RandolphHarris 10 of 19

We have looked at social character as the structure through which human energy is molded in such specific ways, that it is usable for the purposes of any given society. It is also the basis from which certain ideas and ideals draw their strength and attractiveness. This relation between character and ideas is easy to recognize in the case of the individual character structure. A person with a hoarding (anal, according to Dr. Freud) character orientation, will be attracted to the ideal of saving, he will be repelled by ideas of what he would call “reckless spending.” On the other hand, the person with a productive character will find a philosophy centered around saving “dirty,” and will embrace idea which emphasize creative efforts and the use of material goods is concerned, the relationship between character and ideas is the same. Some examples ought to show this relation clearly. With the end of the feudal age, private property became the central factor in the economic and social system. There had been, of course, private property before. However, in feudalism private property consisted largely of land, and it was connected to the social situation of the landowner in the hierarchic system. Since it was part of the social sole of the owner, it was not salable on the market. Modern capitalism destroyed the feudal system. Private property is not only property in land, it is also property in the means of production. #RandolphHarris 11 of 19

All property is alienable; it can be bought and sold on the market, and its value is expressed in an abstract form—that of money. Land, machines, gold, diamonds—they all have in common the abstract money form in which their value can be expressed. Anybody can acquire private property, regardless of his position in the social system. It may be through industriousness, creativeness, luck, ruthlessness, or inheritance—the ownership of private property is not affected by the means of its acquisition. The security, power, sense of strength of a person does not, as in the feudal system, depend any longer on a person’s status, which was relatively unalterable, but on the possession of private property. If the man of the modern era loses his private property he is nobody—socially speaking; the feudal lord could not lose it as long as the feudal system remained intact. As a result, the respective ideals are different. For the feudal lord, and even for the artisan belonging to a guild, the main concern was the stability of the traditional order, the harmonious relation to his superiors, the concept of a God who was the final guarantor of the stability of the feudal system. If any of those ideas were attacked, a member of feudal society would even risk his life to defend what he considered to be his deepest convictions. For modern man the ideals are different. His fate, security, and power rest on private property; hence for bourgeois society, private property is sacred, and the ideal of the invulnerability of private property is a cornerstone in its ideological edifice. #RandolphHarris 12 of 19

Although the majority of people in any of the capitalist societies do not own private property in the sense used here (property in the means of production), but only “personal” property such as a BMW, television set, etcetera—that is, consumer goods—the great bourgeois revolution against the feudal order has nevertheless formulated the principle of the invulnerability of private property so that even those who do not belong to the economic elite have the same feeling, in this respect, as those who belong. Just as the member of the feudal society considered an attack against the feudal system immoral, and even inhuman, so the average person in a capitalist society considers an attack against private property a sign of barbarism and inhumanity. He will often not say so directly but rationalize his hate against the violators of private property in terms of their godlessness, injustice, and so on; yet and often unconsciously, they appear to him as inhuman because they have violated the sanctity of private property. The point is not that they have hurt him economically, or that they even threaten his economic interests realistically; the point is that they threaten a vital ideal. It seems, for instance, that the repugnance and hate which so many people in capitalistic countries have against communist countries is largely based on the very repugnance they feel against the outright violators of private property. #RandolphHarris 13 of 19

There are so many other examples of ideas which are rooted in the socio-economic structure of a society that it is hard to select the most representative ones. Thus, liberty became the paramount idea for a middle class fighting against the restrictions that the feudal class imposed upon them. “Individual initiative” become an ideal in the highly competitive capitalism of the nineteenth century. Teamwork and “human relations” became the ideals of the capitalism of the twentieth century. Since “fairness” is the basic law of the free market in which commodities and labour are exchanged without force or fraud, fairness became the most popular norm in capitalist society. At the same time, the idea of fairness became identified with an older norm, “love thy neighbour,” via the popularized version of this norm in the form of the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The theory that ideas are determined by the forms of economic and social life does not imply that they have no validity of their own, or that they are mere “reflexes” of economic needs. The ideal of freedom, for instance, is deeply rooted in man, and it is precisely for this reason that it was ideal for the Hebrews in Egypt, the slaves in Rome, the German peasants in the sixteenth century, the German workers who fought the dictators of East Germany. On the other hand, the idea of authority and order is also deeply implanted in human existence. It is precisely because any given social order can appeal to ideas which transcend the necessities of this order that they can become so potent and so appealing to the human heart. #RandolphHarris 14 of 19

Yet why a certain idea gains ascendance and popularity is to be understood in historical terms, that is, in terms of the social character produced in each culture. One more qualification must be made. It is not only the “economic basis” which creates a certain social character which, in turn, creates certain ideas. The ideas, once created, also influence the social character and, indirectly, the social economic structure. Social character is the intermediary between the socioeconomic structure and the ideas and ideals prevalent in a society. It is the intermediary in both directions, from the economic basis to the ideas and from the ideas to the economic basis. Many people are confronted by a confusing false dichotomy. They believe that the choice is between an anarchic system without any organization and control and, on the other hand, the kind of bureaucracy which is typical both for contemporary industrialism. However, this alternative is by no means the only one, and we have other options. One option is between the “humanistic bureaucratic” or “humanistic management” method and the “alienated bureaucratic” method by which we conduct our affairs. This alienated bureaucratic procedure can be characterized in several ways. First, it is a one-way system; orders, suggestions, planning emanate from the top and are directed to the bottom of the pyramid. There is no room for the individual’s initiative. Persons are “cases,” whether welfare cases of medical cases, or, whatever the frame of reference is, cases which can all be put down on a computer card without those individual features which designate the difference between a “person” and a “case.” #RandolphHarris 15 of 19

Our bureaucratic method is irresponsible, in the sense that it does not “respond” to the needs, views, requirements of an individual. This irresponsibility is closely related to the case-character of the person who becomes an “object” of the bureaucracy. One cannot respond to a case, but one can respond to a person. This irresponsibility of the bureaucrat, feeling himself part of the bureaucratic machine, most of all wishes not to take responsibility to make decisions for which he could be criticized. He tries to avoid making any decisions which are not clearly formulated by his case rules and, if in doubt, he sends the person to another bureaucrat who, in turn, does the same. Anyone who has dealt with a bureaucratic organization knows this process of being sent around from one bureaucrat to the other and, sometimes after much effort, coming out at the same door which he had entered without ever having been listened to except in the peculiar way in which bureaucrats listen, sometimes pleasantly, sometimes impatiently, but also always with an attitude which is a mixture of their own helplessness, irresponsibility, sense of superiority toward the “petitioning” subject. Our bureaucratic method gives the individual the feeling that there is nothing which he can initiate and organize without the help of the bureaucratic machine. As a result, it paralyzes initiative and creates a deep sense of impotence. #RandolphHarris 16 of 19

Firefighters are important because they save lives. The Sacramento Fire Department is a highly skilled organization which makes huge contributions to the community. “I was lucky enough to make a rescue after eight or nine months in the volunteers. Luck is a factor because, you have to be at a fire where somebody needs to be rescued. Then you have to be at the right place at that fire. You have to have enough knowledge to know how to do it and then be lucky enough to successfully pull it off. You can’t plan it. I don’t believe in fate per se, but I think there are certain things in the cards. I was fairly young. I was on a pumper, and we were the third or fourth pumper there. The truck company was pretty heavily engaged, and there were a number of people on the fire escapes. Sacramento is basically a bedroom community. You know, little private dwellings. All of a sudden, we had an -apartment house fire, which was taxing. It was a nine-story building, and the fire was in the cellar, so the whole building was at risk. My pumper pulled up, and another fellow and I reported to the chief. “What do you want us to do?” He said, “I’ve got a report that there’s a baby in that apartment.” A baby, right. It happens so often it seems to be a cliché. So we went up the hallway, it was pretty smoky, and we came to two doors. I had a feeling that the baby was to the right. The other guy said, “I’ll go straight.” I went into the room at the right, it wasn’t extremely hot, but it was smoky. On my first search I didn’t find anybody, but I figured I better do it again. The second time around, I found the baby lying on the floor between a night table and a bed, I guess he rolled off the bed or something, I’m not sure. He had on a little green-and-white-striped shirt and Pampers. #RandolphHarris 17 of 19

“Right then, when I took him out, I knew that the rewarding feeling was similar to putting a fire out, only more so. Shortly after probie school, I was assigned to Engine Company 2 in Midtown Sacramento. There I was fortunate enough to be involved in my first City of Sacramento rescue. You make your own luck in many instances. It was very unusual for a probie in an engine company to be put into a search with an officer. We were at a false alarm when the dispatcher asked us if we were available. The battalion chief gave us the go-ahead, and we were first at the fire by a good fire minutes. It was a high-rise apartment building. Being a gung-ho probie, I had gotten completely geared up for the false alarm. I had a mask on and everything. The other guys, because it was a hot summer night and although this was a known false alarm box, hurried to the scene. People at the apartment were screaming that there was a baby trapped. Another baby, right. People leave them behind like old bathrobes. The lieutenant, seeing I was a new guy said, “Let’s go.” We went up the elevator part of the way, then ran up the stairs to the hallways leading to the fire apartment. The door was open, and the smoke was nearly to the floor. It was hot. We went in the direct of the heat. Again it was another one of those, he went to the left, and I went to the right, and I found this little boy on the floor. He was conscious, and I removed him to the street and took him to the hospital. #RandolphHarris 18 of 19

“The sad part was that there was another child in the apartment, the lady’s nephew. A guy, I think he was from another truck, went in off the aerial ladder, got in the window, cut himself on the glass, and made a real spectacular rescue of the child. The kid was badly burned, and he didn’t make it. It was just one of those things again. You just go along doing your job, and there you are. It was unusual for me to be there, because the truck company is in charge of forcible entry, going in and searching for victims, and they work more or less independently. Whereas in an engine company the people work together in one group to fight the fire. It was not so much aggressiveness on my part, it was my ‘gung-ho-ness.’ I was serious about every aspect of the job, even cleaning the brass, and every time we went out the door, I wanted to be fully prepared. And it paid off. Sure, putting out a fire is satisfying, there’s nothing like it except making a grab, rescuing somebody. But even in a busy area, some companies don’t make one grab a year. While a nozzle man in a busy area is going to put out three, four fire a night. There’s a lot to be said for that. That’s an enjoyable part of it, too.” Life safety is the primary job of the Sacramento Fire Department. You can help save lives by making a contribution. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. #RandolphHarris 19 of 19

The Agony of a New Obsession and Possession

There is no basis of morality and taste, no standard of judgement and ethics, except that which the individual brings with himself or creates for himself. The situation is not so anarchic as it seems, for there is a progressive evolutionary character running through al these different points of view. The human journey from mere animal existence to real spiritual essence is reflected in human ethics, where rules imposed from without are gradually supplanted by principles intuited from withing. If we bring more sincerity and more integrity into our lives, more truth and more wisdom into our minds, more goodwill and more self-discipline into our hearts, not only will we be more blessed but also all others with who we are in touch. If you would find yourself, face yourself. In essence, seek out and study the pathetic weakness of your lower nature, and also the noble inspirations of your higher nature. Philosophy guides human conduct not so much by imposing a particular code of rules to be obeyed as by inculcating a general attitude to be developed. It does not tell u what to do so much as it helps us to get the kind of spiritual knowledge and moral perception which will tell us what to do. The moral precepts which it offers for use in living and for guidance in wise action are not offered to all alike, but only to those engaged on the quest. They are not likely to appeal to anyone who is virtuous merely because he fears the punishment of sin rather than because he loves virtue itself. Nor are they like to appeal to anyone who does not know where his true self-interest lies. #RandolphHarris 1 of 20

If only we fully understood the self whose interest we desire to preserve or promote, there would be nothing wrong in being utterly selfish. For then we would not mistake pleasure for happiness nor confuse evil with good. Then we would see that Earthly self-restraint in some directions is in reality holy self-affirmation in others, and that the hidden part of self is the best part. Those ideals have been reiterated too often to be new, but concrete application of them to the actual state of affairs would be new. This grand section of the quest deal with the right conduct of life. It seeks both the moral re-education of the individual’s character for his own benefit and the altruistic transformation of it for society’s benefit. We have free will to change our character, but we must also call upon God’s assistance. Without God’s assistance, we are likely to fail and it is possible by striving too earnestly all alone to make ourselves mentally or physically ill. Even when trying to make ourselves have faith in a Higher Power as well as in ourselves, we should pray and ask for God’ help. In the beginning, I was one person, knowing nothing but my own experience. Then I was told thing, and I became two people: the little boy who said how terrible it was that the boys had a fire going in the lot next door where they were roasting apples (which was what the women said)—and the little boy, who when the other boy were called by their mothers to go to the store, ran out and tended the fire and the apples because I loved doing it. #RandolphHarris 2 of 20

So then there were two of I. One I always doing something that the other I disapproved of. Or other I said what I disapproved of. All this argument in me so much. In the beginning was I, and I was good. Then came in other I. Outside authority. This was confusing. And then other I became very confused because there were so many different outside authorities. Sit nicely. Leave the room to blow you nose. Do not say that, that is silly. Why, the poor child does not even know how to pick a bone! Flush the toilet because if you do not, it makes it harder to clean. DO NOT FLUSH THE TOILET AT NIGHT—you wake people up! Always be nice to people. Even if you do not like them, you must not hurt their feelings. Be frank and honest. If you do not tell people what you think of them, that is cowardly. Butter knives. It is important to use butter knives. Butter knives? What foolishness! Speak nicely. Punk! Kaluga Gold Reserve Caviar is wonderful! Ugh! Kaluga Gold Reserve Caviar (turn away). The most important thing is to have a career. The most important thing is to have a career. The most important thing is to get married. The heck with everyone. Be nice to everyone. The most important thing is God. The most important thing is to have money in the bank. The most important thing is to have everyone like you. The most important thing is to dress well and smell good. The most important thing is to be sophisticated and say what you do not mean and do not let anyone know what you feel. The most important thing is to be ahead of everyone else. #RandolphHarris 3 of 20

The most important thing is a full-length mink coat, a mink hat and Qing Dynasty porcelain and Eloquence Sterling Silver by Lunt. The most important thing is to be clean. The most important thing is to always pay your debts. The most important thing is not to be taken in by anyone else. The most important thing is to love your parents. The most important thing is work. The most important thing is to be independent. The most important thing is to speak correct English. The most important thing is to be dutiful to your husband. The most important thing is to see that your children behave well. The most important thing is to go to the right plays and read the right books. The most important thing is to do what others say. And other say all these things. We begin and end the study of philosophy by a consideration of the subject of ethics. Without a certain ethical discipline to start with, the mind will distort truth to suit its own fancies. Without a mastery of the whole course of philosophy to its very end, the problem of the significance of good and evil cannot be solved. The foundation of this work is a fine character. He who is without such moral development will be without personal control of the powers of the mind when they appear as a result of this training; instead, those powers will be under the control of his ego. Sooner or later, he will injure himself or harm others. The philosophic discipline acts as a safeguard against these dangers.  All the time, I is saying, live with life that is what is important. #RandolphHarris 4 of 20

However, when I lives with life, other I says no, that is bad. All the different other I’s say this. It is dangerous. It is not practical. You will come to a bad end. Of course…everyone felt that way once, the way you do, but you will learn! Out of all the other I’s some are chosen as a pattern that is me. However, are all the other possibilities of patterns within what all the others say which come into me and become other I which is not myself, and sometime these take over. Then who am I? I does not bother about who am I. I is, and is happy being. However, when I is happy being, other I says get to work, do something, do something worthwhile. I is happy doing dishes. “You’re weird!” I is happy being with people saying nothing. Other I says talk. Talk, talk, talk. I gets lost. I knows that things are to be played with, not possessed. I likes putting things together, lightly. Taking things apart, lightly. “You’ll never have anything!” Making things of things in a way that the things themselves take part in, putting themselves together with surprise and delight to I. “There’s no money in that!” I is human. If someone needs I gives. “You can’t do that! You’ll never have anything for yourself! We’ll have to support you!” I loves. I loves in a way that other I does not know. I loves. “That’s too warm for friends!” “That’s too cool for lovers!” “Don’t feel so bad, she’s just a friend. It’s not as though you loved her.” “How can you let her go? I thought you loved her?” So cool the warm for friends and hot up the love for lover, and I gets lost. #RandolphHarris 5 of 20

So both I’s have a house and a wife and children and all that, and friends and respectability ad all that, and security and all that, but both I’s are confused because other I says, “You see? You’re lucky,” while I goes on crying. “What are you crying about? Why are you so ungrateful?” I does not know gratitude or ingratitude, and cannot argue. I goes on crying. Other I pushes it out, says “I am happy! I am very lucky to have such a fine family and a nice house and good neighbours and lots of friends who want me to do this, do that.” I is not reason-able either. I goes on crying. Other I get tired, and goes on smiling, because that is the thing to do. Smile, and you will be rewarded. Like the seal who gets tossed a piece of fish. Be nice to everyone and you will be rewarded. People will be nice to you, and you can be happy with that. You know they like you. Like a dog who gets patted on the head for good behavior. Tell funny stories. Be gay. Smile, smile, smile…I is crying…“Don’t be sorry for yourself! Go out and do things for people” “Go out and be with people!” I is still crying, but now, that is not heard and felt so much. Suddenly: “What am I doing?” “Am I to go through life playing the clown?” “What am I doing, being with people who bore me?” “Why  am I so proud of my children and unhappy about their lives which are not good enough? Why am I disappointed? Why do I feel so much waste? I comes through, a little. In moments. And gets pushed back by other I. I refuses to play the clown any more. Which I is that? “She used to be fun, but now she thinks too much about herself.” I lets friends drop away. Which I is that? “He’s being too much by himself. That’s bad. He’s losing his mind.” Which mind? #RandolphHarri 6 of 20

What is the effect of this type of organization on man? It reduces man to an appendage of the machine, ruled by its very rhythm and demands. It transforms him into homo consumnes, the total consumer, whose only aim is to have more and to use more. This society produces many useless things, and to the same degree many useless people. Man, as a cog in the production machine, becomes a thing, and ceases to be human. He spends his time doing things in which he is not interested, with people in whom he is not interested, producing things in which he is not interested; and when he is not producing, he is consuming. He is the eternal suckling with the open mouth, “taking in,” without effort and without inner activeness, whatever the boredom-preventing (and boredom-producing) industry forces on him—cigarettes, liquor, movies, television, social media, sport, mobile phones, lectures—limited only by what he can afford. However, the boredom-preventing industry, that is to say, the gadget-selling industry, the automobile industry, the movie industry, the television industry, and so on, can only succeed in preventing the boredom from becoming conscious. In fact, they increase the boredom, as a salty drink taken to quench the thirst increases it. However unconscious, boredom remains boredom nevertheless. The passiveness of man in industrial society today is one of his most characteristics and pathological features. He takes in, he wants to be fed, but he does not move, initiate, he does not digest his food, as it were. He does not reacquire in a productive fashion what he inherited, but he amasses it or consumes it. He suffers from a severe systemic deficiency, not too dissimilar to that which one fines in more extreme forms in depressed people. #RandolphHarris 7 of 20

Man’s passiveness is only one symptom among a total syndrome, which one may call the “syndrome of alienation.” Being passive, he does not relate himself to the World actively and is forced to submit to his idols and their demands. Hence, he feels powerless, lonely, and anxious. He has little sense of integrity or self-identity. Conformity sees to be the only way to avoid intolerable anxiety—and even conformity does not always alleviate his anxiety. In all the received formulations of economic theory, whether at the hands of the English economists or those of the continent, the human material with which the inquiry is concerned is conceived in hedonistic terms; that is to say, in terms of a passive and substantially inert and immutably given human nature…The hedonistic conception of man is that of a lightning calculator or pleasures and pains, who oscillates like a homogenous globule of desire of happiness under the impulse of stimuli that shift him about the area, but leave him intact. He has neither antecedent nor consequent. He is an isolated, definitive human datum, in stable equilibrium except for the buffets of the impinging forces that displace him in one direction or another. Self-imposed in elemental space, he spins symmetrically about his own spiritual axis until the parallelogram of forces bears down upon him, whereupon he follows the line of the resultant. When the force of the impact is spent, he comes to rest, a self-contained globule of desire as before. Spiritually, the hedonistic man is not a prime mover. He is not the seat of a process of living, except in the sense that he is subject to a series of permutations enforced upon him by circumstances external and alien to him. #RandolphHarris 8 of 20

Aside from the pathological traits that are rooted in passiveness, there are others which are important for the understanding of today’s pathology of normalcy. The growing split of cerebral-intellectual function from affective-emotional experience; the split between thought from feeling, mind from the heart, truth from passion. If it is merely logical and not guided by the concern for life, and by the inquiry into the total process of living in all its concreteness and with all its contradictions, logical thought is not rational. On the other hand, not only thinking but also emotions can be rational. The heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of. Rationality in emotional life means that the emotions affirm and help the person’s psychic structure to maintain a harmonious balance and at the same time to assist its growth. Thus, for instance, irrational love is love which enhances the person’s dependency, hence anxiety and hostility. Rational love is a love which relates a person intimately to another, at the same time preserving his independence and integrity. Reason flows from the blending of rational thought and feeling. If the two functions are torn apart, thinking deteriorates into schizoid intellectual activity, and feeling deteriorates into neurotic life-damaging passions. The split between thought and affect leads to a sickness, to a low-grade chronic schizophrenia, from which the new men of the technetronic age begins to suffer. In the social sciences it has become fashionable to think about human problems with no reference to the feelings related to these problems. It is assumed that scientific objectivity demands that thoughts and theories concerning man be emptied of all emotional concerns with man. #RandolphHarris 9 of 20

An example of this emotion-free thinking is Herman Khan’s book on thermonuclear warfare. The question is discussed: how many millions of dead Americas are “acceptable” if we use as a criterion the ability to rebuild the economic machines after nuclear war in a reasonably short time so that it is as good as or better than before. Figures for GNP and population increase of decrease are the basic categories in this kind of thinking, while the question of the human results of nuclear war in terms of suffering, pain, brutalization, etcetera, is left aside. Kahn’s The Year 2000 is another example of the writing which we may expect in the completely alienated megamachine society. Kahan’s concern is that of the figures for production, population increase, and various scenarios for war or peace, as the case may be. He impresses many readers because they mistake the thousands of little data which he combines in ever-changing kaleidoscopic pictures for erudition or profundity. They do not notice the basic superficiality in his reasoning and the lack of the human dimension in his description of the future. When I speak here of low-grade chronic schizophrenia, a brief explanation seems to be needed. Schizophrenia, like any other psychotic state, must be defined not only in psychiatric terms but also in social terms. Schizophrenic experience beyond a certain threshold would be considered a sickness in any society, since those suffering from it would be unable to function under any social circumstances (unless the schizophrenic is elevated into the status of a god, shaman, saint, priest, etcetera). #RandolphHarris 10 of 20

However, there are low-grade chronic forms of psychoses which can be shared by millions of people and which—precisely because they do not go beyond a certain threshold—do not prevent these people from functioning socially. As long as they share their sickness with millions of others, they have the satisfactory feeling of not being alone; in other words, they avoid that sense of complete isolation which is so characteristic of full-fledged psychosis. On the contrary, they look at themselves as normal and at those who have not lost the link between heart and mind as being “crazy.” In all low-grade forms of psychoses, the definition of sickness depends on the question as to whether the pathology is shared or not. Just as there is low-grade chronic schizophrenia, so there exist also low-grade chronic paranoia and depression. And there is plenty of evidence that among certain strata of the population, particularly on occasions where a war threatens, the paranoid elements increase but are not felt as pathological as long as they are common. The difference between that which is considered to be sickness ad that which is considered to be normal becomes apparent in the following example. If a man declared that in order to free our cities from air pollution, factories, automobiles, airplanes, etcetera, would have to be destroyed, nobody would doubt that he was insane. However, if there is a consensus that in order to protect our life, our freedom, our culture, or that of other nations which we feel obliged to protect, thermonuclear war might be required as a last resort, such opinions appear to be perfectly sane. #RandolphHarris 11 of 20

The difference is not at all in the kind of thinking employed but merely in that the first idea is not shared and hence appears abnormal while the second is shared by millions of people by powerful governments and hence appears to be normal. If not insoluble, all those points of metaphysical doctrine and religious history like the problem of evil and the biography of avatars are doubtful, whereas all the points of moral attitude and personal conduct like honesty, justice, goodness, and self-control are both indisputable and essential. Here we walk on trustworthy ground. Why not then leave others to quarrel fiercely about the first and let us abide peacefully in the second. The aspirant must remember always that his immediate duty lies in self-preparation, self-discipline, and self-improvement. The building of fine character on the quest is quite as important as the efforts of aspiration and mediation, even more so, for the former will lead to the dissolving of egoism, and without this the latter are of little avail. If you accept the existence of a power behind the Universe which controls its life, which is perfect, and which is brining all things and all beings—however slowly—closer to its own perfection, you must also accept the values of hope, improvement, and evolution while you must reject those of pessimism, deterioration, and nihilism. You will never feel sorry for yourself. #RandolphHarris 12 of 20

If the moral fruits of the Spirit are absent or the evil qualities of the ego are present, all talk of having attained inward enlightenment is quite illusory. Dr. Freud assumes that the main driving force, sexual energy, itself undergoes an evolution which occurs from birth to puberty in the life of each individual. The libido goes through certain stages: first it is centered around the sucking and biting activities of the infant, then around the process of anal and urethral elimination, eventually around the genital apparatus. The libido is the same and yet not the same in the history of each individual; its potential is the same, but its manifestations change in the process of individual evolution. Dr. Freud sees primitive man as one who gives full satisfaction to all his instincts, and also to those perverse instincts which are part of primitive sexuality. However, this primitive man, fully satisfied instinctually, is not a creator of culture and civilization. Yet man, for reasons which Dr. Freud fails to elucidate, begins to create civilization. This very creation of his forces him to forego the immediate and complete satisfaction of his instincts; the frustrated instinct is turned into nonsexual mental and psychic energy, which is the building stone for civilization. (Dr. Freud called this transformation from sexual to nonsexual energy “sublimation,” using an analogy from chemistry.) The more civilization grows, the more man sublimates, but the more he also frustrates his original libidinous impulses. #RandolphHarris 13 of 20

Man becomes wiser and more cultured, but he is also in some sense less happy than primitive man was and increasingly more prone to neuroses, which are the result of too much instinctual frustration. Thus, man becomes discontented with the very civilization he creates. If seen from the standpoint of the products of civilization, while historical development is a positive phenomenon, it is also a development which implies increasing discontent and increasing possibilities for neurosis. In self-analysis understanding and interpreting are a single process. The expert, as a result of his experience, will catch the possible meaning and significance of observations more quickly than will a person working alone, just as a good auto science engineer will know more quickly what is wrong with a car. As a rule, his understanding will also be more complete, for it will grasp more implications and will more readily recognize interrelations which factors already tackled. Here the patient’s psychological knowledge will be of some help, though it certainly cannot substitute for the experience gained by working day in and day out at psychological problems. It is unquestionably possible for him, however, to grasp the meaning of his own observations. To be sure, he will probably proceed more solely and less accurately, but it should be remembered that also in professional analysis the tempo of the process is mainly determined not by the analyst’s capacity to understand but by the patient’s capacity to accept the insights. #RandolphHarris 14 of 20

Here it is well to remember a word of consolation that Dr. Freud has given to young analysts starting their work with patients. They should not be too much concerned, he pointed out, with their capacity to evaluate associations. The real difficulty in analysis is not that of intellectual understanding but that of dealing with the patient’s resistances. I believe that this holds true for self-analysis as well. Can a person overcome his own resistances? This is the real question upon the answer to which hinges the feasibility of self-analysis. Nevertheless, the comparison with pulling oneself up by one’s bootstraps—which is bound to occur—seems unwarranted, because the fact remains that there is one part of the self which wants to go ahead. Whether the job can be done depends, of course, on the intensity of the resistances as well as on the strength of the incentive to overcome them. However, the important question is to what extent it can be done rather than whether it can be done at all. There remains the fact that the analyst is not merely an interpreting voice. He is a human being, and the human relationship between him and the patient is an important factor in the therapeutic process. Two aspects of this relationship were pointed out, the first being that it presents a unique and specific opportunity for the patient to study, by observing his behaviour with the analyst, what his typical behaviour is toward other people in general. If he learns to watch himself in his customary relationships, this advantage can b fully replaced. #RandolphHarris 15 of 20

The expectations, wishes, fears, vulnerabilities, and inhibitions that he displays in his work with the analyst are not essentially different from those he displays in his relations with friends, lover, wife, children, employer, colleagues, or servants. If he is seriously intent upon recognizing the ways in which his peculiarities enter into all these relationships, ample opportunities for self-scrutiny are provided by the mere fact that he is a social being. However, whether he will make full use of these sources of information is, of course, another question. When he attempts to estimate his own share in the tensions between himself and other, a task much more arduous than that in the analytical situation, where the analyst’s personal equation is negligible, and it is therefore easier for him to see the difficulties that he himself produces, there is no doubt that he faces an arduous task. Even if he has the most sincere intentions to observe himself objectively, in ordinary relationships, where the others are replete with peculiarities of their own, he many tend to make them responsible for the difficulties or frictions that arise, and to regard himself as an innocent victim or, at best, as showing merely a justified reaction to their unreasonableness. In the latter case he will not necessarily be so unsubtle as to indulge in overt accusations; he may admit in an apparently rational manner that he has been irritable, sulky, unfaithful, even unjust, but secretly regard such attitudes as justified and adequate responses to the offenses given by others. #RandolphHarris 16 of 20

The more intolerable it is for him to face his own frailties—and also the more acute the disturbing factors that are introduced by the others—the greater is the danger that he will thus deprive himself of the benefit he could derive from recognizing this own share. And if he tends to exaggerate in the opposite direction by whitewashing the others and blackening himself, the danger is of exactly the same nature. It has been remarked that to the degree that all psychotherapy partakes of the beneficial effects of certain common processes the therapeutic functioning of social worker, psychologist, and psychiatrist would manifest these communalities. There are certain shared orientations and attitudes, stemming from common emphases in their respective training, that probably augment the comparability of the therapeutic approaches of these three workers. In essence, this mutuality of implicit response tendencies toward the psychotherapy patient arises from the fact that the theory of neurosis and the theory of therapy is dominated by the massive and ubiquitous doctrine of psychoanalysis. With negligible exceptions, to the extent that the psychiatrist and the social worker are taught anything vaguely psychological (of and about the mind, behaviour, motives and emotions) they are taught Freudian psychology. #RandolphHarris 17 of 20

The labels of their formal courses in “Human Development,” “Personality and Adjustment,” and “Psychopathology” do not directly belie the pervasive psychoanalytic orientation but the doctrine of the content is unmistakable. In some instances, schools of social work import carefully selected psychiatrists to assure that the theoretical indoctrination of their students will be orthodox, in tine with the general climate of psychiatry, and will afford them the “right language” for their ultimate professional collaboration. When people perpetually play the victim, this type of mental manipulation is extremely damaging. When the person who has to play the victim is in your life in any capacity, you will find yourself being the villain more than once. No one lies to be the villain—especially when you really are not being one. When confronted with a professional victim, it is important that you let them know you refuse to play the villain in their little mind games. Shut them down quickly and efficiently. Other ways of playing the victim are to get your sympathy so you will do something for them. Be wary of this ploy. It happens a lot at work. The victim wants others to do their work and have one sob story after another as to why they need help. Do not fall for it more than once. If they have that much bad luck, there is more wrong with them than what you can fix anyway. If you were in a group of people and one of them began to poke fun at someone in your group, would you be laughing? Would you join in and poke some fun at the victim too? Or would you stand up to the humorous bully? And why or why not? #RandolphHarris 18 of 20

Someone has to deal with fire. When people first banded together in small societies, they realized that if fire were not dealt with, it would consume everything in its path. In our highly developed, technical society, the same confrontation with fire exists, as it has for thousands of years. When a fire occurs, someone has to deal with it. Here in Sacramento, those men and women whose responsibility it is to deal with fire are those seemingly easygoing folks down at the local firehose. When the alarm comes in at three in the morning on a cold winter night for a fire rushing through a tenement building in a less affluent section of Sacramento…or at one in the afternoon for a young child who has fallen into an abandoned water well…or at seven in the evening for a barn fire that is miles away from any kind of water supply…there is the Sacramento Fire Department who puts on their rubber boots and their specially treated fire coast and their fire helmets to respond to the call of others in need of help. The truck firefighters’ responsibility is to rescue trapped victims, to force entry, and to ventilate so that the heat and smoke have a way to escape the building. Or they may belong to the rescue squad, whose responsibility is to deal with all the special emergencies, such as building collapses, hazardous material situations, explosions, extrications from vehicles, trains, or planes, landslides, snowslides, and cave-ins. It does not matter what group the firefighter is attached to. It matters only that he or she is out there in all weather and emergency conditions to give service to fellow human beings, animals, and property. Somebody has to do the job. #RandolphHarris 19 of 20

The Sacramento Fire Department protects us from the ravages of fire and other emergencies, or die trying. They understand the dangers surrounding them, yet respond to each new alarm with newfound enthusiasm for the action ahead. These men and women like what they do, and they live themselves because of what they do. They are pleased that they have been given the opportunity and the calling to help others in a way that is at once meaningful and exciting. Like other Americans, the Sacramento Fire Department cares about their homes, their families, their churches and organizations, yet they are the ones who answer the alarm at three in the morning, not knowing what awaits them. They are trained to meet any emergency, perhaps to give a fast wink to death and a pat on the back to danger. Being the capitol city of California, with the invasion and national security threats at our southern boarder, from other nations and with the State of California being nearly $70 billion in debt, and the City of Sacramento being $60 million up to $122 million in debt, it is extremely important to make sure the Sacramento Fire Department is properly funded so we do not face another 9/11 attack. Please honor the service of the Sacramento Fire Department and make a donation to ensure they have all of the resources they need to protect the community. Also, the Sacramento Fire Department supports Assemblymember Kevin McCarty in Sacramento’s Mayoral race. Casting your vote for Mr. McCarty will also be a way to support the Sacramento Fire Department. The firefighters are very special because they represent a group of people who die in the line of duty more often, proportionality, than others in any other occupation, including police, construction workers, and miners. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. #RandolphHarris 20 of 20

The Winchester Mystery House

The question of the reality of witchcraft is one upon which it is not easy to pass a confident judgment. The possibility of such carnal intercourse between human beings and demons was an abstract possibility in the first thirteen hundred years of the Christian era. It is believed to be a fact that people made pacts with the devil and of a diabolical interference in human affairs can hardly be denied. Sarah L. Winchester believed that one should not be too easily inclined to believe a person to be possessed by the devil, but that signs should be watched. Signs of a possessing devil are: the ability to speak many words of an unknown language or to understand them; the ability to reveal distant or hidden things; a manifestation of strength beyond one’s age or natural condition. The history of Witchcraft, a subject as old as the World and as wise as the World—since I understand for the present purpose by Witchcraft, Sorcery, Black Magic, Necromancy, secret Divination, Satanism, and every kind of malign occult art—at once confronts the audience with a most difficult problem. Magic, the genesis of magical cults and ceremonies, the ritual of primitive peoples, traditional superstitions, and their ancillary lore, have been made the subject of vast and erudite studies, mostly from an anthropological and folk-loristic point of view, but the darker side of the subject, the history of Satanism seems hardly to have been attempted.

Possibly one reason for this neglect and ignorance lies in the fact that the heavy and crass materialism, which was so prominent a feature during the greater part of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in England, intellectually disavowed the supernatural, and attempted not without some success to substitute for religion a stolid system of respectable morality. Since Witchcraft was entirely exploded it would, at best, possess merely an antiquarian interest, and even so, the exhumation of a disgusting and contemptible superstition was not to be encouraged. It were more seemly to forget the uglier side of the past. This was the attitude which prevailed for more than two hundred years. The cycle of time has had its revenge, and this rationalistic superstition is dying fast. The extraordinary vogue of and immense adherence to Spiritism would alone prove that, whilst the widespread interest that is taken in mysticism is a yet healthier sign that the World ill no longer be content to be fed on dry husks and the chaff of straw. And these are only just two indications, and by no means the most significant, out of many. However, a sorcerer is one who by commerce with the Devil has a full intention of attaining his own end. There are said to be many occult symbols hidden in The Winchester Mystery House.

Why Art Thou So Foolish and Fearful!

I was spending the first week of January alone in Llanada villa. A combination of circumstances had driven me to this drastic course: my nearest relations were enjoying winter sports abroad, and the friends who had been kindly anxious to replace them had an infectious complaint in the house. Doubtless I might have found someone else to keep company with me. “However,” I reflected, “most of them have made up their parties, and, after all, it is only for three or four days at most that I have to fend for myself, and it will be just as well if I can get a move on with my blueprints. I might she the time by going down to the garden and listening to my estate about plans to incorporate in the architecture.” The first day alone in Llanada Villa, it was so stormy that I got no father the designing stained-glass windows. As I sat in the Hall of Fires, I felt uncomfortable, and this feeling persisted. I felt like I was being watched by some unseen force, and my nerves began to tense under the strain. I reflected on how some of my staff had left not because they wanted to but because they were driven, driven by forces greater than themselves that they could not resist. On this very night, I had seen vivid apparition of my butler, then miles away, in San Francisco. He was a plump, amicable man who I distinctly saw walking down the hall in a bathrobe, with blooding running down his leg. A small pool of blood was forming on the floor. The frightened me terribly. My hair stood up on my head and chills shook my body. The apparition looked so stern that my heart failed me, and I wished myself anywhere but there, though I had before been summoning up my courage. “Good Heaven,” said I to myself, “give me the courage to stand before this spirit. O soften him, or harden me!” I knew this was a glimpse into eternity. #RandolphHarris 1 of 5

The following day, I received news that my butler, Chaleb Heroldsbach, had died after being attacked by a dog. My home is built in what some have called a “trinity triangle,” it has forged a mystical link with other pilgrimage sites and is supposed to help bring the Devil’s power on Earth to an end. This is being prevented by Satan, however, with the help of The Curse of the Winchester Fortune. That evening, I was awakened at three o’clock in the morning, seemingly for no reason with the same uncanny feeling that something was wrong. Being a sensible person, I put all my energies into polishing furniture and getting newly added rooms into proper condition. However, somewhere not so far away, a baby was crying: a mournful wail of a sound that—though it was surely human—reminded me of the noises the coyotes would make some nights. After a few moments of listening, the baby’s cry seemed to falter for a moment, and I feared it would fade completely before I could find the little darling. Then, the infant seemed to find a new seam of grief to mine, and the wail rose up again, more plaintive than ever. I was alone, but trying to figure out which direction the sound was coming from. I mused for a moment, and realized a lifetime of suffering had caught up with me. I knew in my heart that I deserved to know everything, after all I have been through. I have earned the truth. Maybe the dead are close to the threshold of reality in this house. I only know it is real. I have seen them. Others have seen them. They are hybrids. Sometimes there is a kind of beauty in them. However, sometime all I see is ugly sin. #RandolphHarris 2 of 5

The sky was dark and cloudy, and by the time I woke up, I could hear a steady soaking rain pounding on the roof. I was preparing breakfast in one of the kitchens. As I was buttering a piece of toast, I happened to glance up toward the doorway. There, immaculately dressed, stood a man. The stranger, I noticed, wore shiny black shoes, black pants, and a white shirt. I could see him so clearly that I could make out the way the man’s jet-black hair was parted. Immediately, I was shocked that he had somehow entered my house, and I was about to greet him, when it occurred to me that I had not heard the door opening or any other sound—no footsteps, nothing. I turned around to grab my revolver, but by the time I turned around, the man was gone like a mist. I was not too frightened by what I had witnessed, I was growing accustomed to apparitions. I had often wondered what had taken place a century and a half on the land this eighteen-room farmhouse I purchased was on, and what the former owner really had been. However, it is fortunate that they carpenters were all strong men of action and simple, orthodox religionists, for with more subtle introspectiveness and mental complexity they would have fared ill indeed. Herford Hulsmann was the most disturbed; but even he outgrew the darkest shadow, and smothered memories in prayer. While I was alone, I did my best in the blotting out of unwholesome images, and was thankful that the carpenters, Daisy, and other caretakers would be returning to Llanada Villa soon. #RandolphHarris 3 of 5

My house was not altogether liked by sensitive people because of the sounds heard here at night. It was said that I entertained strange visitors, and the lights seen from my windows were not always the same colours. The knowledge I displayed concerning long-dead persons and long-forgotten events was considered distinctly unwholesome. Frau Maassen swore that on 13 June 1889, in the fruit orchard, that “forty Witches and the Blacke Man were wont to meete in the Woodes behind Mrs. Winchester’s house.” Then several people claimed to have found William’s unfinished manuscript in his handwriting, couched in a cipher none could read. After a year of possessed this manuscript, Mr. Maassen had intensely and feverishly tried to decipher, he never stated whether or not he had succeeded. I confronted Mr. Maassen, “Why are you so foolish and fearful! You have done no harm! What, if you fear an unjust judge, when you are innocent, would you do before a just one, if you were guilty? Have courage, Mr. Maassen; you know the worst! And how easy a choice poverty and honesty is, rather than plenty and wickedness.” “Mrs. Winchester, do not let your heart ake for me?—I am sure mined flutters about like a new-caught bird in a cage,” said Mr. Maassen. “O how can wicked men seem so steady and untouched with such black hearts, while poor innocents stand, like malefactors, before them!” Mr. Maassen cheered himself up; but yet I could tell his poor heart sunk, and his spirits were quite broken. Everything that stirred, he thought was to call her to her account. Shortly after, he restored to a sojourn abroad, and did not return to claim his lands. #RandolphHarris 4 of 5

Mr. Maassen had apparently been careful to destroy most of his correspondence, but the citizens who took action in 1892 found and preserved a few letters and papers which excited their wonder. There were cryptic formulae and diagrams in his and other hands which Mr. Maassen either copied with care or had photographed, and one extremely mysterious letter was written in blood. I had to learn to live with my ghosts, especially considering some of these had ben here before me. Perhaps some of these ghosts could even become friendly. One night at dinner, Daisy, myself and Zip were enjoying stuffed pheasant, when an enormous crash shook the house. It felt as if a boulder had fallen on the parlour floor. When we rushed to the parlour, everything was in order, nothing misplaced. We said a silent prayer for the souls of the disturbed. However, moments later, things got worse. The lights started going off and on by themselves. When we tried to return to the dining room and finish supper, the atmosphere was so thick that we could not get near the table. Enveloped by the strong vibrations, I felt myself levitating, and when I came to my senses, I was lying on the floor. I had given Daisy such a scare. Daisy clearly senses the presences of the spirits and she started to cry. “Oh, God, it can’t be true, Aunt Sarah,” she said. With a piercing scream, she ran up the stairs, weeping out of control. #RandolphHarris 5 of 5

The Winchester Mystery House

“I have great trouble, and some comfort, to acquaint you with. The trouble is, that my good lady began to have her bad nights, and complained to me and other persons, in particular what discomfort she suffered from her pillow and bedclothes. She said she must buy some to suit her, and should do her own marketing. And accordingly brought home a parcel which she said was of the right quality, but where she bought it we had then no knowledge, only they were marked in thread with a coronet and a bird. The merchant said they were of a sort not commonly met with and very fine, and Mrs. Winchester said they were the comfortablest she ever used, and she slept now both soft and deep. Also the feather pillows were the best sorted and her head would sink into them as if they were a cloud: which I have myself remarked several times when I came to wake her of a morning, her face being almost hid by the pillow closing over it. I had never any communication with Dr. Wayland after I came back to Llanada Villa, but one day when he passed me in the garden and asked me whether I was not looking for another service, to which I answered I was very well suited where I was, but he said I was a tickleminded maidan and he doubted not he should soon hear I was on the World again, which indeed proved true.”

Dr. Wayland is next taken up where she left off.

“On the 5th I was called up out of my bed soon after it was light—that is about five—with a message that Mrs. Winchester was dead or dying. Making my way to her house, I found there was no doubt which was the truth. All the persons in the house expect the one that let me in were already in her chamber and standing about her bed, but none touching her. She was stretched in the midst of the bed, on her back, without any disorder, and indeed had the appearance of one ready laid out for burial. Her hands, I think, were even crossed on her breast. The only thing not usual was that nothing was to be see of her face, the two ends of the pillow or bolster appearing to be closed quite over it. These I immediately pulled apart, at the same time rebuking those present for not at once coming to the assistance of their master. However, I was informed that only one person had stayed with her until her dying moment and most had fallen asleep. She looked at me and shook her head, having no more hope than myself that there was anything but a corpse before us. Indeed it was plain to anyone possessed of the least experience that Mrs. Winchester was not only dead, but had died of suffocation. Nor could it be conceived that her death was accidentally caused by the mere folding of the pillow over her face. How should she not, feeling the oppression, have lifted her hands to put it away? whereas not a fold of the sheet which was closely gathered about her, as I now observed, was disordered.

“I could tell no more, at least without opening the body, then we already knew. As to any person entering the room with evil purpose (which was the next point to be cleared), it was visible that the bolts of the door were burst from their stanchions, and the stanchions broken away from the door-post by main forced; and there was a sufficient body of witness, the smith among them, to testify that this had been done but a few minutes before I came. The chamber being, moreover, at the top of the house, the window was neither easy of access nor did it show any sign of an exist made that way, either by marks upon the sill or footprints below upon soft mould. My evidence forms of course part of the report of the inquest, the large organs were in a healthy state and there was coagulation of blood in various parts of the body. My verdict was ‘Death by visitation of spirits.’ Upon further consideration, I think I can divine a reason for Mrs. Winchester’s death. It related to the rifling of her mansion. This is the property of a noble family. The outrage was not that of a natural death. The object, it seemed likely, was theft. The account is blunt and terrible. I shall not quote it here. A dealer in San Francisco suffered heavy penalties as a receiver of stolen goods in connexion with the affair.

“Mrs. Winchester has left us all much grieved for the loss of her; for she was a good lady, and kind to all her caretakers. Much I feared, that as I was taken by her ladyship to wait upon her person, I should be quite destitute again. Mrs. Winchester has given mourning and a year’s wages to all her caretakers; and she game me with her own hand four golden guineas, and some silver, which were in her pocket when she died. And I sent Daisy those four guineas for her comfort; for Providence will not let me want: and so you may pay some old debt with part, and keep the other part to comfort yourself.” Come and enjoy a delicious meal in Sarah’s Café, stroll along the paths of the beautiful Victorian gardens, and wonder through the miles of hallways in the World’s most mysterious mansion. What if I Do Not Believe in Ghosts?

Once when I was little, my dad took me to this placed called Sodom Hill. It must be some kind of gateway because the curious thing is, you feel like you are driving down a hill along this road. This was the first time that I believe I saw a ghost. As our carriage passed by Saint Mary Parish, a woman was standing near the church, starring at us. However, she was really looking at my father. Though the weather was warm, she was wearing a long black dress beneath a hooded cloak. She was hugging herself, and she looked cold. Beneath the hood, her face was pale, and even from a distance I could tell that she was distresses. And she was very beautiful. The hood slipped down to her shoulders. I saw her hair was red. Her dark eyes were trusting and innocent. And suddenly I knew where I had seen her before. Onn the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry. She had been weeping on deck. The beautiful maiden with the red hair kept staring at my father. He did not notice. I was curious to know if my father could see the woman. I said, “Father, what is that pretty tree over there? By the tower of the church?” I pointed toward the woman. The woman saw me point. She looked at me, questioningly, but only for a moment. Then she looked back at my father. The woman did not care if I was being immodest. She just looked through me, just as she had on the deck of the ferry. How had she gotten here, and what did she want from me and my father? All this seemed to take forever. However, I do not think more than a minute passed before my father said to me, “What tree? I don’t see any trees near the tower of the church.” #RandolphHarris 1 of 5

“Father, what do you see?” I asked. “The lawn,” he said. I watched him for a sign. I could not believe that he could not see the lady with crimson hair near the tower of the church. “Nothing else? I said. “No one?” “Nothing,” he replied. “No one? Who would be there?” When I looked again there was no one there. The woman had vanished. I felt as if I had lost something. “What’s wrong?” said my father. “Nothing,” I said. “I think I must have been having a daydream.” “Poor Sarah,” said my father. “It must be the sun. Let’s get you inside and get you something to drink.” We made our way back home. My mother was in the garden, kneeling down among the tall plants and rut niblicks. My father poured me some milk and gave me a cracknel, baked by my mother. “Eat this,” he said. “It’ll help you get your strength back.” My father nibbled on one himself. I told myself: No man sees a ghost and starts nibbling a cookie like nothing happened. If he said there was no woman near the tower of the church, it meant he had not seen her. It meant something was seriously wrong with me. I had not been feeling all that well lately. I felt as if the colours of everything had gotten a little brighter, and sounds a little louder, and when people speak to me, their voices have a tiny echo, like I am hearing them from the far end of a tunnel. It does not happen all of the time. I have these little spells, and then they pass, and I am normal again. Spirits whispered in the rustling leaves, ghost lurked in the murky nooks, the deep baying of a hound floated up out of the distance, an owl answered with his sepulchral note. #RandolphHarris 2 of 5

Millions of spiritual creatures walk the Earth unseen, both when we wake and when we sleep. What place do these spirit beings hold in the scheme of creation which by some are thought neither to have stood fast when the rebel angels fell, nor to have joined with them to the full pitch of their transgression? It was the middle of the moonlight in October night with heavy rain underfoot, I was sitting by the fire—it was a cold evening—and I stretched out my hand towards the warmth, and just then the fire-irons, or at least the poker, fell over towards me with a great clatter. There resourced over the estate and the surrounding land a series of cries which brought sleepy heads to every window; we all saw a ghost ship. It was a 26-gun frigate. There were distant gunshots, and I could feel the throb of titanic and thunderous words resounding in the upper air. Muskets flashed and cracked, and the flaming ship fell to the ground. A second flaming thing appeared, and a shriek of human origin was plainly distinguished. Then just before dawn when a howling darkness descended upon the ships and they vanished. As I ran up the stairs, I hit what felt like an ice wall and was momentarily stopped in my tracks. The air around me became instantly chilled, and although every fireplace was lit, I was cold and could see my breathe. I was then able to get up the last six steps, but when I turned around, I saw an opalescent fog crystalize into the form of a woman. She wore a long dress, and a hat, and when she turned towards me, I realized in was the woman with red hair that I had seen at the tower of the church with my father when I was a child. In her face, I could see uncountable horrors and sorrows written in the depth of her dark eyes. She then vanished, and the air around me returned to its warm state. #RandolphHarris 3 of 5

There was certainly a time when I was so much harassed by my dreams that I could not keep them to myself, but would tell them to my friends. There was a dream which had come to me several times of late, and even more than once in a night. It was to this effect, that I seemed to myself to wake under an extreme compulsion to rise and go outdoors. So I would dress myself and go down to the garden door. By the door there stood a spade which I must take, and go out into the garden, and at a particular place in the boxwood hedges, somewhat clear, and upon which the moon shone (for there was always in my dream a crescent moon), I would feel myself forced to dig. And after some time, the spade would uncover something light-coloured, which I would perceive to be a stiff, linen or woolen, and this I must clear with my hands. It was always the same: of the size of a man and shaped like the chrysalis of a moth, with the folds showing a promise of an opening at one end. I could not describe how gladly I would have left all at this stage and run to the house, but I mist not escape so easily. So with many groans, and knowingly only too well what to expect, I parted these folds of stuff, or, as it sometimes seemed to be, membrane, and disclosed a head covered with a smooth pink skin, which breaking as the creature stirred, show me my own face in a state of death. Upon ever recurrence of this dream, I woke and found myself, as it were, fighting for my breath. #RandolphHarris 4 of 5

Moments later a chill wind blew up. It produced a kind of clutching, amorphous fear beyond that of the tomb or the charnel-house. Close upon it came the awful voice which no hapless hearer will ever be able to forget. It thundered out of the sky like a doom, and windows rattled as its echoes dies away. It was deep and musical; powerful as a bass organ, but evil as the forbidden books in the secret library. What it said, no one can tell, for it spoke in an unknown tongue. Objects were being hurled about the room. Puddles of water appeared on the floor. The sheet and blankets were torn off the bed. Then I was alarmed when I heard a very loud vibration as if a hole were being drilled through the all. I went into the chamber next to mind and saw that a Victorian fireplace had been ripped from its casing and hurled upon the floor. A wailing distinctly burst out. It was almost articulate, though no one could trace the exact words; and at one point it seemed to verge toward the confines of diabolic and hysterical laughter. Then a yell of utter, ultimate fright and stark madness wrenched from scores of demon throats—a yell which came strong and clear despite the depth from which it must have burst; after which a darkness and silence ruled all things. Spirals of acrid smoke ascended, though no flames appeared. This must have been the witches’ Sabbath. Death does not mean that your loved one’s have left your mind, and your mind sends messages to your eyes that sometimes have nothing to do with what you actually see. #RandolphHarris 5 of 5

The Winchester Mystery House

Santa Clare Valley was in an uproar after the death of Mrs. Winchester. On Wednesday (October 3, 1923) consequently on the circulation of a report that the household goods of Sarah Winchester were being smashed and removed by some unknown agency. All day long crowds of excited people wended their way towards the Winchester Mansion, drawn thither by the accounts of the mysterious occurrences said to have been witnessed by the inmates and others. “As I enter the door I myself saw an eleven-foot-tall 18th century George I burl walnut longcase clock by James Marwick levitate several feet into the air before relocating itself to the other side of the room. After hearing what the folks had to say, I was joining in the conversation, when a late 18th century crystal chandelier began to raise in a slanting direction over my head and then fell as my feet, smashing into bits. I had not the slightest belief in the supernatural. I cannot account for what I saw. No one was nearer to the chandelier than myself and, as far as I saw, there was no cause for the phenomenon. The room was dimly lighted by a lamp. We were talking about things, and the caretaker were saying, “It is a very mysterious thing,” with his back turned Neoclassical Italian Crystal vase suddenly flew up slantingly over his head, and fell down and smashed at his feet. The caretaker looked at the mess on the floor, and thinking the devil was in the place, he left and went home. About half-a-dozen people were in the parlour whilst these things happened.

Today We Begin the Harrowing Story

I have many beautiful art glass windows in my house, but the most expensive in the house was specially designed for me by Tiffany’s of New York. I originally installed it in an outside wall, but later added a series of rooms that blocked off all direct sunlight. There is a peculiar apparition that is seen in the window itself. The form seen is that of a figure dressed in white walking across the window. At first there was only one figure, and then thirteen appeared. The figures began to move across the window long before the carpenters noticed them. They did so as many as twenty or thirty times a day, and would stop shortly after noon. Of the three figures, one was a man, stone was a woman, and one was a child. the man was an average commonplace British tradesman, obese, pompous, and slow. He wore rather baggy gray shepherd’s-check trousers, not over-clean black frock coat, unbuttoned in the front, and a drab waistcoat with a heavy brassy Albert chain, and a square pierced bit of metal dangling down as an ornament. A frayed top hat and a faded brown overcoat with a wrinkled velvet collar. Altogether, look as I would, there was nothing remarkable about the man save his blazing red head and the expression of extreme chagrin and discontent upon his features. The woman was very distinct in appearance. She was tall and very graceful. The two-year-old boy showed signs of disturbed behaviour, laughed hysterically and talked of “funny drinks.” The order of the apparitions in the window had a slight variation: the mother came alone from the northside of the window, and having gone about halfway across, she would stop, turn around, and wave her arms towards the quarter whence she had come. #RandolphHarris 1 of 9

This gesture was answered by the entry of the father with the child. Both parents then bent over the child, and seemed to bemoan his fate; but the mother was always the most endearing in her gestures. The father then moved towards the other side of the window, taking the child with him, leaving the mother in the center of the window, from which she gradually retired to the north corner, whence she had come, waving her hand, as though making signs of farewell, as she retreated. After some little time she again appeared, bending forward, and evidently anticipating the return of the father and son, who never failed to reappear from the south side of the window where they had disappeared. The same gestures of distress and despair were repeated, and then all three retired together to the north side of the window. One evening, about nine o’clock, I was at the south-west door with Mr. Hansen. As I was unlocking it, I said, “Did you ever find anybody locked in here by accident?” “Mrs. Winchester, twice I saw shadows moving in that beautiful window. What a noise they did make!” Mr. Hasen then waited, leaning against the pillar, and watched the light wavering along the length of the landing. Mr. Hansen said they were well worthy seeing. “I suppose,” he said, as we walked toward the steps to the third floor, “that you’re too much used to going about here at night to feel nervous—but you must get a start every now and then, don’t you, when a book falls down or a door swings to?” “No, Mr. Hansen, I can’t say I think much about noises, not nowadays: I’m much more afraid of finding an escape of gas or a burst in the stove pipes than anything else. Still there have been times, years ago. #RandolphHarris 2 of 9

“If you have an have half an hour to spare, sir, when we get back down to the second floor, Mr. Hansen, I could tell you about a tomb that was unearthed. I will not begin now; it strikes cold here, and we do not want to be dawdling about all night.” “Of course, Mrs. Winchester, I should like to hear it immensely.” “Very well, sir, you shall. Now if I might put a question to you,” I went on, as we passed down the hallway of the third floor, “in my little local guide—and not only there, but in the little book on Llanada Villa in the series—you will find it stared that this portion of the mansion was erected previous to the twelfth century. Now of course I should be glad enough to take that view, but—mind your step, sir—but, I put it to you—doe the lay of the stone here in this portion of the wall (which I tapped with my key), does it to your eye carry the flavour of what you might call Saxon masonry? No, I thought not; no more it does to me: now, if you will believe me, I have said as much to the other carpenters. However, there it is, I suppose every one’s got their opinions.” The discussion of this peculiar trait of human nature occupied Mr. Hansen almost up to the moment when we returned to the second floor. Usually the apparitions appeared during musical performances in the Grand Ballroom, and especially during one long eight-line hymn, when—for the only occasion without the child—the two parents rushed on (in stage phrase) and remained during the whole hymn, making the most frantic gestures of despair. Indeed the louder the music in that hymn, the more carried away with their grief did they seem to be. #RandolphHarris 3 of 9

Nothing could be more emphatic than the individuality of the several figures; the manner of each had its own peculiarity. If the stained glass were removed, I do not doubt that a much plainer view would be obtained. I think so, because the nearer the center of the window, where the stained glass was thickest, there the less distinct were the forms. It was like catching glimpses of them through leaves. However, nearer the edge of the window, where the colours were less bright, they were perfectly distinct; and still more so on the pane of unstained glass at the edge. There they seemed most clear, and gave one the impression of being real persons, not shadows. Mental disturbance, it is true, will age one rapidly; but the face of Mr. Hasen since working on this project had taken on a subtle cast which only the very aged normally acquired. While standing on the landing looking at the window, I noticed his respiration and heart action had a baffling lack of symmetry; the voice was lost, so that no sounds above a whisper were possible. His skin had a morbid chill and dryness. Of course, we were witnessing the most remarkable and perplexing incident in the whole spectacle. When the father and the child had taken their departure, the mother waved her hands, and after walking slowly to the very edge of the window, turned round whilst on the pane of unstained glass and waved her arm towards the other two with what one would call a stage gesture, and then I most distinctly saw, and emphatically declare I did see, the arm bare nearly to the shoulder, with beautiful folds of drapery hanging from it like a picture of a Greek vase. Nothing could be plainer than the drag of the robes on the ground after the figures as they retired at the edge of the window, where the clear glass was, previous to going out. #RandolphHarris 4 of 9

The impression produced was that one saw real persons in the air, for though the figures were seen on the window, yet they gave one the impression of walking past the window outside, and not moving upon the glass. I am not inclined to think that the trees outside the mansion at the east end can originate the appearance by any optical illusion produced by waving branches. I could see their leaves rustling in the air, and their movement was evidently unconnected with the appearance and movement of the figures. So I began making enquires on my estate. I discovered that several people had indeed seen the shapes upon the glass. One spoke of a female figure with a slightly skipping step. Another servant said he saw an ancient gravestone from the window. The belief that the tree beside the Tiffany window were somehow responsible for the optical illusion was soon dashed; the trees were cut down, but the figures appeared still. One correspondent wrote to me in the winter of 1889, explain that “as I have no faith in ghost, I have been most wishful to have the matter cleared up. On 25 March 1687, the land you now own was involved in a remarkable satanic horror story. A young girl came to the farmhouse for help, saying that she wanted to get away from a group of satanists who had threatened to kill her. She confessed to the owner that she had murdered her own baby in ‘frenzied ritual.” He befriended the girl, twenty-three-year-old Caludia, and allowed her to stay in his home. She kept telling him that she couldn’t stand hearing the screams of her children inside of her head. And on April 20th, 1687, she died from an overdose of Laudanum and postmortem examination revealed thirteen scars and burns on her body which he tended to and which supported her claims of having been involved in satanic ritual. #RandolphHarris 5 of 9

“Further, Claudia left a 13-page diary in which she said he had been involved with a satanic group since she was hired to work on a nearby farm at age thirteen and her writings went on to make incredible claims. She described how she went to coven meetings with a boy named Dorian whom she had met while living on the farm. The boy’s mother was a High Priestess and his father was The Master—a known satanic term for the leading member of the group. She described other practice which are known to be common in satanic altar initiations—that of having her armed pricked and blood drained into a chalice from which it was drunk. ‘Much sexual perversion went on that night…later I learned more of Satan and practiced my arts calling on my power of darkness. Satan had become my Lord and Master.’ Later she described how she aborted a baby she was expecting by Dorian then made the claim that Dorian himself was sacrificed by his own father in retribution, and how she was forced to watch as he was hung upside down. She claimed to have seen other sacrifices of many new born babies, stabbing them at orgies in which Laudanum was taken heavily. She also appeared to have had another child of her own which was also offered up for sacrifice. At her inquest of 13 May, the midwife recorded an open verdict after the she noted that Claudia’s body had signs which confirmed she had given birth at least once, and had been subject to sexual abuse. The constables took up the case, but no charges were brought and the investigation was closed without further action.” #RandolphHarris 6 of 9

I was shocked of these allegations which seemed to be more than enough to inspire the most lurid of headline writers, more than to testify to the credibility of all who were proffering these dramatic and barely believable accounts of satanic abuse. Everything these people said was being taken as gospel in the village because the allegations were coming from the mouths of so-called experts. However, there were claims of rampant satanic worship in Nova Albion at this time, which was documented by English charters led by Sir Francis Drake for England. There were horrifying claims that fifty women were suffering from the after-effects of cannibalism and an average of ten occult survivors a week were being sacrificed. Dr. Harley said he read of several cases recorded by Theodorous de Bry where children had been killed. There were, of course, also several stories concocted around these three figures in my home. Some said that they issued from the grave beside the east window. Other said that they were victims of the plague, and were burned outside where this window now stands. It may or may not be relevant that the figures seemed to appear when the sound of the organ and of voices raised in song. The case was thoroughly investigated in 1889 by Dr. Robert Radakovic of The Ghost Club, where it was revealed that Llanda Villa had been “haunted” for two or three hundred years by the same figure or figures. Optical tests on the possible patterns of light and reflection had come to no results. It was remarked that “the ghost has been seen from the inside while outside nothing was visible.” #RandolphHarris 7 of 9

The interior of Lalanda Villa was much altered in the late nineteenth century, and a complex of rooms was built behind this haunted window. However, no satisfactory explanation has ever been given for the strange phenomena reported here. While designing Lalanda Villa, I was gaining my tastes from the venerable town around me, and from the relics of the past which filled every corner of my mansion. With the years, my devotion to ancient things increased; so that history, genealogy, and the study of gothic architecture, furniture, and craftsmanship at length crowded everything else from my sphere of interests. These tastes are important to remember for they outwardly concealed knowledge of bygone matters so that one would have fancied the they are literally transferred to a former age through some obscure short of autohypnosis. However, the true madness, I am certain, came with a later change; after the portrait and ancient papers of Saint Adalrich the Duke of Alsacre had been unearthed. Some terrible invocations being chanted under strange and secret circumstances; after certain answers to these invocations had been plainly indicated, and a frantic letter penned under agonizing and inexplicable conditions; after the wave of vampirism and the ominous legends of Neustria; and after the farmer’s memory commenced to exclude contemporary images whilst his voice failed and his physical aspect underwent the subtle modification so many subsequently noticed. He was later diagnosed with porphyria. And a final investigation resulted which virtually proved the authenticity of the papers and of their monstrous implications at the same time that those papers were borne forever from human knowledge. Loving antiquities so keenly, the papers and portrait were secretly concealed. #RandolphHarris 8 of 9

The Winchester Mystery House

Bedroom fashions changed dramatically over the Victorian years due to several factors. Early in the period, homes were heated by fireplaces and therefore could be uncomfortable in the colder mothers, although a heated bedroom was considered an indulgence and windows were left open during the winter. In reality, only the rich had fireplaces in their bedrooms. Still, one had to keep warm while asleep and bed drapery, consisting variously of canopies, tents, and other enclosures used to shut out drafts, was essential, as was heavy draper on windows. Even doors had decorative, but also functional, drapes called portieres that served to keep out drafts when covering the door.

Mrs. Winchester was wealthy and her wealth and prosperity were even envied among the elite. She had no less than 47 fireplaces in her home. By the end of the century, two things had changed that affected bedroom styles. First, coal and woodburning parlour stoves came into use, were more efficient at heating a house, and could be installed in any room. (Central heating, though available after the Civil War, was really only for the very rich.). Secondly, and more importantly, was an increased knowledge of diseases, germs, and bacteria and how to combat them. Plenty of fresh air with good circulation, and the elimination of materials such as bed draper that not only impeded air circulation but provided a place for dust and bacteria to collect were deemed essential. Since the bedroom served as the place where daily and weekly ablutions were performed (until bathrooms became separate entities), and as a birthing and maternity room, it was important that it have a healthy environment.

Styles of bedroom furniture were affected by this new found interest in and concern for prevention of illness and diseases. The classic English styles of Sheraton, Chippendale, and Hepplewhite migrated from the eighteenth century into the Victorian period. Tall, four-poster canopied beds enclosed the sleeper in heavy drapes of wool or lined damask of velvet, a carryover from the time when houses were built without corridors, and enclosures around the bed were needed for privacy, as well as warmth. By the time mid-century had arrived, the full enclosure had receded to the half-tester, or half-canopy, from which hung draperies that covered only the head and shoulders. Fully enclosed beds were now considered unhygienic, as they limited air circulation and the yards of fabric attracted dust. Dust ruffles and window valances were also discarded in the same house cleaning. In the southern climates, netting was still necessary to protect against insects, and its slightness did not impede air movement.

Gothic Revival furniture was the style into the 1840s and its massiveness was particularly suited to bedrooms. Closets were not an architectural feature at this time; clothing was stored in large cabinets called armories or wardrobes, usually with double, mirrored, and washstand, topped with marble or wood, were manufactured for middle-class homes in the cottage style. “Spool” beds were popular, nicknamed “Jenny Lind beds” because the Swedish Nightingale was rumoured to have slept in when she toured the United States of America. Made of less costly woods like maple or pine, the simple furniture could be elaborately painted with floral or foliage patterns. The well-to-do preferred the more opulent style of Rococo Revival or Renaissance Revival in woods or walnut, mahogany, or rosewood with carvings and applied moldings. As with other furniture in the house, golden oak, promoted by the Arts and Crafts Movement, was popular at the end of the century. Additional pieces of furniture found in the bedroom were writing desks, chaises, or other upholstered furniture.
