Please Wear Seat Belts

It is important to wear your seat belt, especially in these foggy conditions that we are experiencing because many times others cars cannot see you on the road. In the fog, you need at least 1,000 feet between the car in front of you, as the visibility can be zero. The California High Way Patrol reported that fog played a factor, in a collision, which exterminated five people, along Highway 4 and Highway 99, East of Stockton, California, on the morning of 13 January 2015, at about 6.50am. The exact location of the fatal crash was on Farmington Road at Van Allen Road.

Adult seat belt use is the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in crashes. Yet millions of Americans do not wear their seat belts on every trip; it is estimated that 87 percent of drivers to wear their seat belts. Nonetheless, motor vehicle crashes and collisions are the leading cause of unintentional injury and death across all groups. More than 2.2 million adult drivers and passengers, in America, were treated in emergency rooms, as the result of being injured in a car accident, and 40,000 people are killed in car accidents, each year.

Car accidents are the leading cause of death for people 54 years of age and under. Protecting yourself and your loved ones means not only being a better drive, but setting a good example. One must understand that to stay save on the roads, you need to reduce your speed, drive sober, and wear your safety belts, which are put in your vehicle, by the auto manufacture, to keep you from flying out the window or hitting your head on the windshield, if you are involved in a car accident.
When used properly, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injuries by 45 percent and reduce moderate to critical injury by 50 percent. It is estimated that seat belts saved 12,359 lives in 2014. And since 1975, seat belts have saved more than 300,000 lives.

How Serious are the Health Risk of Smoking?

I

n death, there is nothing new and surprising.  Nicotine is a natural stimulant found mainly in tobacco, and it one of the most widely used psychoactive drugs in the World, nicotine is also a carcinogen. How does nicotine compare with other stimulants? Nicotine is a potent drug. It is so toxic that it sometimes used as an insecticide! In large doses it causes stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea, cold sweats, dizziness, confusions, and tremors. In very large doses, nicotine may cause convulsions, respiratory failure, and death. For a nonsmoker, 50 to 75 milligrams of nicotine taken in a single dose could be lethal. (Chain smoking, which means one smokes anywhere from 17 to 25 cigarettes a day, will produce this deadly dosage.) Most first-time smokers get sick on 1 or 2 cigarettes. In contrast, heavy smokers may inhale 40 cigarettes a day without feeling it, but it is having a devastating impact on their mind, body and lungs.  However, this indicates that smokers build a tolerance for nicotine, but that does not negate the fact that it is hurting your body.  Cigarettes contain over 4,000 poisonous chemicals including formaldehyde, arsenic, tar, cyanide, carbon monoxide, nicotine, ammonia, benzene, acetone, and thousands of others that have never been studied. Smoking also causes your skin to wrinkle and you may prematurely age.

Is it true that nicotine can be addicting? Abuse—a vast array of evidence confirms that nicotine is extremely addictive, and for many smokers, withdrawal from nicotine causes headaches, sweating, cramps, insomnia, digestive upset, irritability, and sharp cravings for cigarettes. These symptoms last from 2 to 6 weeks and can be worse than heroin withdrawal.  So you can get an idea of how powerful nicotine is, we need to discuss heroin for a moment. Heroin (discetylmorphine) is derived from the morphine alkaloid found in opium and is roughly 2-3 times more potent. Heroin is highly addictive; so just because nicotine is legal, does not mean it is safe, as it is more addictive than some other powerful illegal drugs. While on the topic of heroin, just to show you how dangerous nicotine and heroin is we need to talk about a current event.  Just today, 13 January 2015, law enforcement officials arrested 23 drug dealers for selling heroin in the Northern Westchester area, and seized more than $1 million dollars’ worth of drugs.  Also, you have to be very careful with nicotine because sometimes it is laced with heroin. Quitting smoking can be very difficult, but it is possible. Nicotine is so addictive that relapse patterns are nearly identical for alcoholics, heroin addicts, cocaine abusers, and tobacco users. A staggering 80 percent of people who quit smoking relapse within a year, but it is possible to quit, you just have to be determined. And if you are not a smoke, please do not try any kind of drugs, as it can be a battle to let them go. Impact on healthy—a burning cigarette releases a variety of potent carcinogens, which are cancer causing substances.

Lung cancer and other cancers caused by smoking are not considered the single most preventable cause of death in North America. Among men, 97 percent of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. For women, 74 percent of all lung cancers are due to smoking. Here are some facts about smoking: every cigarette reduces a smoker’s life expectancy by 7 minutes. Something is the number one cause of death in North America—more than the number of deaths from alcohol, drugs, car accident and AIDS combined. In the United States of America alone, smoking related deaths cost total $50 billion a year, and taxpayers pick up 43 percent of the bill, which equals about $21.5 billion a year. Nicotine is so addictive that 40 percent of the people who develop throat cancers try smoking again. The good news, each year, 25 percent of the people stop smoking are successful.  The reason it is so hard to stop smoking is because many tobacco companies manipulate nicotine levels in their cigarettes to keep the smokers addicted. Daily exposure to second-hand smoke, at home or work, causes a 24 to 39 percent increase in cancer risk to non-smokers.  One billion people around the World smoke and 5 million people die each year from tobacco related illness, and secondhand smoke kills 600,000 people each year. Smoking can also cause babies to born with defects, low birth weight and unformed lungs, so it can also kill your unborn baby.

If you think smoking is harmless, or that there is no connection between smoking and cancer, you are kidding yourself. The link between tobacco smoking and cancer is undeniable. Skeptics please note: Wayne McLaren, who portrayed the rugged Marlboro Man, in cigarette advertisements, died of lung cancer at age 51. Smokers do not just risk their own health, they also endanger those nearby. Secondary smoke causes 20 percent of all lung cancers. Non-smoking women, who are married to smokers, suffer a 30 percent increase in their risk of developing lung cancer. Babies born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy are three times more likely to die of sudden infant death syndrome. It is highly irresponsible of smokers to expose young children to second-hand smoke. And more people die from fires caused by people, who fall asleep smoking, than fires caused by anything else. Is it better for a person to quit smoking abruptly (cold turkey) or taper down gradually? Quitting smoking—for many years, smokers were advised to quit cold turkey. We know that quitting all at once is not always better than tapering off. Going cold turkey makes quitting an all-or-nothing proposition. Smokers who smoke even one cigarette after they have quit tend to feel they have failed. Many figure they may as well continue smoking. Those who quit gradually accept that success may take many attempts, spread over several months. Sometimes it may take years to successfully stop smoking.

Sometimes people only smoke out of peer pressure or to fit in. There was once a guy who had no friends, and the one he did have smoke daily, so in order to hang out with them and fit in, he started smoking, too. Then it became a habit. It took him 13 years to drop the habit because everyone thought that it was cool to smoke. If you have friends who smoke, and you are trying to stop, I suggest you stay away from them, and spend time with them where you all cannot smoke, so you do not relapse. New strategies to stop smoking—if you smoke, and would like to quit, here are some basic steps you can take: delay having that first cigarette of the day. Then try to delay a little longer each day. Also, when you pick up the cigarette think about all the black tar that you are ingesting in your lungs, then gradually reduce the total number of cigarettes you smoke each day. Quit smoking completely, but for just one week. Then quit again, a week at a time, for as many times necessary to make it stick. You may find that your nerves are bad, after you stop smoking, so consider meditation, religion, or even an anti-anxiety medication, until you are able to deal with the stress of day-to-day life.

Gradually stretching the time periods between cigarettes is the key part of the program. Immediately after you stop smoking, your body and lungs start to heal and repair. You blood pressure will go down, carbon monoxide levels in the blood reduce to about half and oxygen levels return to normal in just 8 hours after you stop smoking. After 48 hours, your chances of having a heart attack will already have decreased. All nicotine will have been purged from the body and sense of taste and smell begin to return. After 72 hours, of quitting smoking, bronchial tubes will relax and energy levels increase. Lung capacity will also increase.  After two weeks of being smoke free, circulation is greatly improved and will continue to improve for about 10 weeks. Within 3 to 9 months, lung capacity will improve by about 10 percent and coughing, wheezing, and breathing problems related to smoking will resolver. Cilia in the lungs regenerate. There is also an increased ability to detoxify the lungs and reduced risk of infection.

Pregnant women who quit before the fourth month of pregnancy greatly reduce the risk of stillbirth and low birth weight associated with smoking. After 1 year, chances of having a heart attack will have decreased by 50 percent. After 5 years, chances of having a stroke will be that of a non-smoker, and chances of mouth and bladder cancer will decline as well. In 10 years, chances of lung cancer will be the same of a non-smoker, and after 15 years of not smoking, chances of having a heart attack will decrease to that of a nonsmoker. So save your lungs and body and reduce your health care cost by not smoking, and you will also save money. Pack a day smokers will save $180.00 a month, once they stop smoking. The LORD will march out like a mighty man, like a warrior, he will stir up zeal; with a shout, he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies. However, now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant. I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn rivers into islands and dry up the pools. I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths, I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. There are the things I will do; I will not forsake them. For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. –The Bible

Should you Punish a Corrput Governor?

Clearly, the story of learning is unfinished without a return to the topic of punishment. Sin is always punished in this World, whatever may come in the next. On 6th January 2015, former Governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell, age 60, was sentenced for two years for corruption. He was convicted of taking loans, clothing and private plane trips and other gifts from businessman Jonnie Williams. Prosecutors had sought to put McDonnell behind bars twelve years , while his defense team had pressed for community service and no prison time. Bob McDonnell’s wife, Maureen McDonnell, who was also found guilty of corruption charges in the case, is due for her sentencing hearing on 20th February 2015. As Governor Jerry Brown of California knows, there is always some penalty in health, in comfort, or in peace of mind to be paid for every wrong.  It is unheard of that a person would be governor of the same state for four terms, and it is actually illegal, in California.

Spankings, reprimands, fines, jail sentences, firings, failing grades, and the like are commonly used to control behavior.  Recall that punishment lowers the probability that a response will occur again. To be most effective, punishment must be given contingently (only after an undesired response occurs).  Fines and imprisonments and corporal punishments operate more forcibly on the human mind than all the fears of damnation. Punishers, like reinforcers, are best defined by observing their effects on behavior. A punisher is any consequence that reduces the frequency of a target behavior. It is not always possible to know ahead of time what will act as a punisher for a particular person. For example, when Ian’s mother reprimanded him for throwing his toys, he stopped doing it. In this instance, the reprimand was a punisher. However, Kenny is starved for attention, of any kind from his parents, who both work full time.  For Kenny, a reprimand, or even a spanking, might actually reinforce toy throwing. Remember, too, that a punisher can be either onset of an unpleasant event, or the removal of a good state of affairs (response cost).

Punishers are consequences that lower the probability that a response will be made again. If a reporter is fired for lying and slandering a person, that termination of their employment is directly punishing because the reporter is noted for being unethical and reprimanded. Looking for another job will be difficult because the reporter did something wrong to get fired and others news agencies will not want to hire them, once the perspective employer fines out why he or she was terminated, and that adds to the punishment, in form of response cost.  Punishments are of service to the offenders. Rewards should be only to the meriting, and the former are to be dealt out rigorously in willful cases. How effective is punishment? Many people assume that punishment stops unacceptable behavior. Is this always true? Actually, the effectiveness of punishers depends greatly on their timing, consistency, and intensity. Punishment works best when it occurs as the response is being made, or immediately afterward (timing), and when it is given each time a response occurs (consistency). Thus, you could effectively (and humanely) punish a child that cries incessantly, every Sunday morning, from 7am until 11am, by asking it to stop each time it cries. Ten to fifteen such treatments are usually enough to greatly reduce crying.  This would not be the case if you applied punishment haphazardly or long after the crying stopped. If you discover that your son dug up a tree and ate it while you were gone, punishing the boy hours later will do little good.

Severe punishment (an intensely aversive or unpleasant stimulus) can be extremely effective in stopping behavior. If a 65-year-old Dave sticks his finger in a light socket and gets a shock, that may be the last time he ever tires it. More often, however, punishment only temporarily suppresses a response. If the response is still reinforced, punishment may be particularly ineffective, and responses suppressed by mild punishment usually reappear later. If 25-year-old Maria sneaks a snack from the refrigerator before dinner and is punished, she will probably try sneaky snacking again, sometime later (the beautiful little angel). She may not even want to eat again. It is worth nothing, however, that intense punishment may permanently suppress responding, even for actions as basic as eating. Parents and teachers have three basic tools to control simple learning: Reinforcement strengthens responses; non-reinforcement causes responses to extinguish; punishment suppresses responses. If punishment is used at all, it should always be mild. However, remember that mild will be ineffective if reinforcer are still available in the situation. That is why it is also best to reward an alternate, desired response. For example, a child who has a habit of taking toys from her brother should not just be reprimanded for it. He should be praised for cooperative play and rewarded for sharing his toys with others. Punishment tells a person that the response was wrong. However, it does not say what the right response is, so it does not teach new behaviors. If reinforcement is missing from the formula, punishment becomes less effective.

There are side effects of punishment. What are the draw backs of using punishment? A basic problem is that punishment is usually aversive (painful or uncomfortable). As a result, people and situations associated with punishment tend, through classical conditioning, to become feared, resented, or disliked. The aversive nature of punishment makes it especially poor to use when teaching children to eat politely or in toilet training. Escape and avoidance—a second major problem is that aversive stimuli usually encourage escape and avoidance learning. In escape learning, we learn to make a response in order to end an aversive stimulus. For example, if you work with an excessively cheerful and outgoing person, you may at first escape from conversations with him to obtain relief. Later you may dodge him altogether. This is an example of avoidance learning (making a response in order to postpone or prevent discomfort). Each time you sidestep him, your avoidance is reinforced by a sense of relief. In many situations involving frequent punishment, similar desires to escape and avoid are activated. For example, children who run away from punishing parents (escape) may soon learn to lie about their behavior (avoidance) or to spend as much time away from home as possible (also an avoidance response).

Aggression—a third problem with punishment is that it can greatly increase belligerence. Researchers have shown that people consistently react to pain by attacking whomever or whatever else is around. A common example is the nice old lady, who has a hot flash, and attacks the first people she can think of when she awakens from her nightmare of a painful procedure, at Planned Parenthood.  We also know that one of the most common responses to frustration is aggression. Generally speaking, punishment is painful frustrating or both. Punishment, therefore, sets up a powerful environment for learning belligerence. When a child is spanked, the child may feel angry, frustrated, and hostile. What if the child then goes outside and hits his brother? The danger is that destructive acts may feel good because they are releasing anger and frustration. If so, violence has been rewarded and will tend to occur again in other infuriating situations. One classic study found that overly aggressive adolescent boys had been severely punished for hostility at home. Since aggression was suppressed at home, parents were often surprised to learn that their good boys were in trouble at school for fighting. A more recent study of classroom discipline problems found that physical punishment, yelling, and humiliation are generally ineffective. Good reinforcement, in the form of praise, approval, and reward, it much more likely to quell classroom disruptions, defiance, and inattention.

There are times when punishment may be necessary to manage the behavior of a child, or even another adult. If you feel that you must punish, here are some tips to keep in mind. Do not used punishment at all if you can discourage misbehavior in other ways. Make liberal use of good reinforcement, especially praise to encourage good behavior. Also, try extinction first: see what happens if you ignore a problem behavior; or shift attention to a desirable activity and then reinforce with praise. Apply punishment during, or immediately after, misbehavior. Of course, immediate punishment is not always possible. With older children and adults, you can bridge the delay by clearly stating what act you are punishing. If you cannot punish a child immediately, wait for the next instance of misbehavior. Use the minimum punishment necessary to suppress misbehavior. Often, a verbal rebuke or a scolding is enough. Avoid harsh physical punishment. (Never hit a child in the head, for instance.) Taking away privileges or other good reinforcers (response cost) is usually best for older children and adults. Frequent punishment may lose its effectiveness, and harsh or excessive punishment has serious negative side effects (discussed in a moment).

Be consistent. Be very clear about what you regard as misbehavior. Punish every time the misbehavior occurs. Do not punish for something one day and ignore it the next. If you are usually willing to give a child three chances, do not change the rule and explode without warning after a first offense. Both parents should try to punish their children for the same things and in the same way. Expect anger from a punished person. Briefly acknowledge this anger, but be careful not to reinforce it. Be willing to admit your mistake if you wrongfully punish someone or if you punished too severely.  Punish with kindness and respect. Allow the punished person to retain self-respect. For instance, do not punish a person in front of others, it at all possible. A strong, trusting relationship tends to minimize behavior problems. Ideally, others should want to behave well to get your praise, not because they fear punishment. The most common error in using punishment is to rely on it alone for training or discipline. The overall emotional adjustment of a child disciplined mainly by reward is usually superior to one disciplined mainly by punishment. Frequent punishment makes a person unhappy, confused, anxious, aggressive, and fearful.

Parents and teachers should be aware that using punishment can be habit forming. When children are being noisy, messy, disrespectful, or otherwise misbehaving, the temptation to punish can be strong. The danger is that punishment often works. When it does, a sudden end to the adult’s irritation acts as a negative reinforcer; this encourages the adult to use punishment more often in the future. Immediate silence may be golden, but its cost can be very high in terms of the child’s emotional health. Sparing the rod will not spoil a child. In fact, the reverse is true: two recent studies found that young children with behavior problems had been harshly punished at home. And if your child is abused and their toys damaged, and you blame them for damaging the toy, but then punish them six to nine months later, and they did nothing wrong, you tortured that Child. Then end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sin. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to sever others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. However, rejoice that you participate in the suffering of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief, or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear the name. For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And, if it is this hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly sinner?  So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

Does Parctice Make Perfect?

happiness 001

Most behavior is learned. Imagine if you suddenly lost all you ever learned. What could you do? You would be unable to read, write, or speak. You could not feed yourself, find your way home, and drive a car, play Sony Play Station, or party. Needless to say, you would be totally incapacitated. You brood of vipers, how can you who are unlovely say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. The good man or woman brings out of them the virtuous stored up in hearts and minds, and the ungodly brings up the unscrupulous things out of the immoral thoughts stored up in them. However, we will have to give an account, on the Day of Judgment, for every careless word that they have spoken. For your words, you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.

Happy Sunday 003

Learning is obviously important. What is a formal definition of learning? Learning is a relatively permanent change in behavior due to experience. Notice that definition does not mention temporary changes caused by motivation, fatigue, maturation, disease, injury, or drugs. Each of these factors can alter behavior, but none qualifies as learning. Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men and women, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in Heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with Twitter and Facebook, as the hypocrites do, to be honored by men. Do good deeds in secret and you will please God.

Happy Sunday 005

Is not learning the result of practice? It depends on what you mean by practice. Merely repeating a response will not necessarily produce learning. You could close your eyes and swing a tennis racket hundreds of times without learning anything about tennis. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good. You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. Teach the older men and women to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.  Likewise, teach your friends and loved ones to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but teach what is good to them. Then teach the people to love their spouses and families, to be busy at home, to be kind, and encourage people to be self-controlled.

Happy Sunday 006

Reinforcement is the key to learning. Reinforcement refers to any event which increases the probability that a response will occur again. A response is any identifiable behavior. Responses may be observable actions, such as blinking, eating a piece of candy, or turning a doorknob. They will also be internal, such as having a faster heartbeat. To teach a child a new action, one could reinforce correct responses by giving the child a hug each time they do something good.

Happy Sunday 011

Similarly, you could teach children to be good by praising them for picking up their toys. Learning can also occur in other ways. For instance, if a boy or girl gets slandered by a reporter, he or she may learn to dislike reporters. In this case, the child’s apprehension is reinforced by the pain he or she feels immediately after seeing the reporters. Do you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? However, the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man or a woman unclean. For out of the heart come malicious thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander. These are what make men and women unclean.

Happy Sunday 018

Antecedents and Consequences—unlocking the secrets of learning begins with noting what happens before and after a response. Events that that precede a response are called antecedent. Effects that follow a response are consequences. Paying careful attention to the before and after of learning is a key to understanding. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling the same prayers over and over. God knows what you need before you ask him. Spend more time thanking God for the good things you already have and you will see more blessings in your life.

Happy Sunday 024

Classic conditioning is based on what happens before a response. We begin with a stimulus that reliably triggers a response. Imagine, for example, that a puff of air (the stimulus) is aimed at your eye. The air puff will make you blink (a response) every time. Your eye-blink is a reflex (automatic, non-learned response). Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: the Lord knowns those who are his, and everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from immoral activity.

Happy Sunday 039

Now, assume that we sound a trumpet (another stimulus) just before each puff of air hits your eye. If the horn and the air puff occur together many times, what happens? Soon, the horn alone will make you blink. What happened? Clearly, you have learned something. Before, the horn did not make you blink. Now it does. Similarly, if you are happy every time you hear Aaliyah sing, you may learn to be happy every time you see Aaliyah—a picture of Aaliyah, an Aaliyah CD, or an Aaliyah movie.

BabyGirl-aaliyah-23653994-1591-2142

These are your goals; Aaliyah brought you out of darkness and depression and into the light. You have a desire to find stimulus that make you feel good. Your heart and mind are in the right place. You are filled with the spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts—to make artistic designs in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts. Basically, when you focus on what you love, you will see more blessings and miracles in your life.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Happy Sunday 051

In classic conditioning, antecedent events become associated with one another: a stimulus that does not produce a response is linked with one that does. (A horn is associated with a puff of air to the eye, for example.) Learning is evident when the new stimulus will also elicit (bring forth) a response.  Some may ask, why do I help my enemies?

Happy Sunday 155

God commands: love your enemies, do go to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. However, love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be the children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and unlovely. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Happy Sunday 057

In operant conditioning, learning is based on the consequences of responding. A response may be followed by a reinforcer (such as food), or by punishment, or by nothing. These results determine whether a response is likely to be made again. For example, if you wear a particular hairstyle, and gets lots of compliments (reinforcement), you are likely to wear that hairstyle more often. If people snicker, insult you, call the police, or scream (punishment), you will probably wear that hairstyle less often. Do not judge, or you too will be judged.

Happy Sunday 192

For in the same way you hate on others, people will hate on you. Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your knowledge to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.  The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. However, if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.

The Most High

Marijuana and hashish are derived from the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. Marijuana consists of the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant. Hashish is a resinous material scraped from Cannabis leaves. The main active chemical in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol (tet-rah-hydro-cah-NAB-ih-nol) of THC as an acronym.  THC is a mild hallucinogen, which is a substance that alters sensory impressions. Hallucinogens—the drug Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) is perhaps the best-known hallucinogen. Even when taken in tiny amounts, LSD can produce hallucinations and psychotic-like disturbances in thinking and perception. Two other common hallucinogens are mescaline (peyote) and psilocybin (magic mushrooms). Incidentally, the drug Phencyclidine (PCP) can have hallucinogenic effect. However, PCP, which is an anesthetic, also has stimulant and depressant effect. This potent combination can cause extreme agitation, disorientation, violence—and too often, tragedy. All of the hallucinogens, including marijuana, typically affect neurotransmitter systems that carry messages between brain cells. Marijuana’s psychological effects include a sense of euphoria or well-being, relaxation, altered time sense, and perceptual distortions. At high dosages, however, paranoia, hallucinations, and delusions can occur. All considered, marijuana intoxication is relatively subtle to such drugs as LSD or alcohol. However, you have to be careful. Even if marijuana is not laced with other drugs, it can be so strong that you pass out or fall asleep in an instance. Driving a car or operating heavy machinery, while on marijuana, can be extremely hazardous. As a matter of fact, driving under the influence of any intoxicating drug is extremely dangerous.

Some people have been hospitalized from smoking marijuana, so marijuana cannot be considered harmless. Particularly worrisome is the fact that THC accumulates in the body’s fatty tissues, especially in the brain and reproductive organs. Even if a person smokes just once a week, the body is never entirely free of THC. Scientists have located a specific receptor site on the surface of brain cells where THC binds to produce its effect. These receptor sites are found in large numbers in the cerebral cortex, which is the seat of human consciousness. Does marijuana produce physical dependence? Studies of long-term heavy users of failed to find any physical dependence. Marijuana’s potential for abuse rests primarily in the realm of psychological dependence, not addiction.  There have been very alarming reports in the press about the dangers of marijuana. Are they accurate? As one pharmacologist reported, William Randolph Hearst and those reading Good Housekeeping would have to believe that marijuana is considerably more dangerous than the black plague because people start to hear things and think too deeply and they create thoughts and situations, which may not be happening in reality. Unfortunately, an evaluation of marijuana’s risk has been clouded by an emotional debate. Let us see if we can make a realistic appraisal.

In the past, it was widely reported that marijuana causes brain damage, genetic damage, and a loss of motivation. These changes can be criticized for being based on poorly done or inconclusive research. However, that does not give marijuana a green light. For about a day after a person smokes marijuana, his or her attention and coordination and short-term memory are affected. Some people have gotten high, for the very first time, and reported feeling like they were out of their minds for weeks. People would talk to them, and they would just go blank and blackout standing up. Only to come to, without even hitting the ground, and have no memory of what just happened. In addition, long-term users tend to show small, but persistent learning, memory, attention and thinking. However, that is not always the case. Some people say that marijuana helps them concentrate, on their college studies. I had a friend who smoked a lot of marijuana, while at a private university, and got a 4.0, all four years. Nonetheless, for the average person, the changes in your behavior and thinking will be impaired, but the changes may be subtle, and can be a serious problem for frequent users.

Health Risk—in regular users, marijuana causes pre-cancerous changes in lung cells. However, at present, there is no direct link between marijuana and lung cancer has been proved, but it is suspected. Marijuana smoke contains 50 percent more cancer-causing hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke does. One marijuana cigarette has 16 times more tar than one tobacco cigarette. Thus, smoking several joints or blunts a week may be the equivalent of smoking a dozen cigarettes a day. Marijuana temporarily lowers sperm production in males, and users produce more abnormal sperm. This could be a problem for a man who is marginally fertile and wants to have a family. THC can cause women to have abnormal menstrual cycles and disrupt ovulation. THC causes higher rate of miscarriages and that it can reach the developing fetus. THC can also suppress the body’s immune system, possibly increasing the risk of disease. Marijuana can cause genetic damage within the cells of the body. It is not known to what extent this happens in humans, but it does suggest that marijuana can be detrimental to health. Activity levels in the cerebellum are lower than normal in most marijuana abusers. This may explain why chronic marijuana users tend to show some loss of coordination. There is some evidence that THC damages parts of the brain important for memory.

When the preceding findings are compared with the studies of veteran marijuana users, it is clear that no one can report with certainty that marijuana is extremely harmful or completely safe. Although, much is still unknown, marijuana appears to be in a class with two other potent drugs—tobacco and alcohol. Only future research will tell for sure what is in the pot. Why is drug abuse such a common problem? People seek drug experiences for any reason, ranging from curiosity, and a desire to belong to a group, to a search for meaning or an escape from feelings of inadequacy. Let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. Not only must our relationship to God be right, but the outward expression of that relationship must also be right. Ultimately, God will allow nothing to escape every detail of our lives is under God’s scrutiny. God never tired of bringing us back to that one point until we learn the lesson, because God’s purpose is to produce the finished product. God’s wonderful work in us makes us know that overall, we are right with Him. Whatever it may be, God will point out with persistence until we become entirely His.  My heart rejoices in the LORD; in the LORD my mind is lifted high. I cry out to God Most High, to God, who vindicates me.

Echoes of War

Those who never have been guilty of any indiscretion are generally people who have very little active virtue. West of Lone Pine, spiritual battles rage. In the 1920s, passengers and crew aboard a narrow-gauge mountainside train witnessed a terrible conflict between the United States of America Cavalry, and the Paiute Indians. The strangest thing about this conflict was that the fighting had actually occurred in the 1860s; the people on the train were actually seeing a spectral replay of the deadly combat. Echoes of a similar skirmish have been heard on nearby Portal Road for more than 100 years. If the human mind is not actively good, it will generally be actively unhealthy. Alcohol is the common name for ethyl alcohol, the intoxicating element in fermented and distilled liquor. I am sure you have heard people call alcohol spirts, and many people want to know why? Alcohol comes from the Arabic term al-huhl, which is the name of a body-eating spirit. When alchemists ingested alcohol, their senses deadened, and they named the substance according to its body-taking qualities. Knowing this, Europeans called alcohol spirits because it seemed like when people were under the influence of this power drug, a spirit would jump into their body and take control of their mind program and reactions, people seemed to be possessed.

The greatest devil among us has his white spots, and the purest saint has ink-black stains which will be clearly visible if he does not keep his white clothing too tight about him. People seldom commit a sin without intending to derive benefit from it. It is said in Victorian myth that drugs and alcohol open the gateway to hell and allowed for spirits to infect you, and take control, until the drug wears off, if it ever does. Kennedy Meadows is just southwest of Lone Pine. As with so many spots in this part of California desert, a mining community once existed there in 1849, when the Gold Rush, in California was at its heights. During the 1800s, a lot of the miners used to drink moonshine, and they recalled seeing a solitary spirit—and a rather unnerving one at that. The Specter’s first name is no longer known because he was commonly called “Mac,” short for his surname of MacSpreem. Mac was certainly not a bad man—he was merely eccentric, and he liked to drink rather a lot. His death was a direct result of that habit; he was murdered in 1948 during an argument that involved the lethal combination of alcohol and guns. It is unlikely that Mac’s ghost ever intentionally frightens anyone; it is just that his invisible spirit manifests itself as a rather unnerving icy coldness. In the Early 1970s, two brothers, Jake and Frank Davis, were hiking in the Lone Pine area with their dog. The weather was mild and they intended to camp out. When the brothers came across a depression, in a sheltered area, it seemed like the perfect spot to set up camp.

Although they had no way of knowing this at the time, they were not the first to choose the camp site—MacSpreem had lived there some 30 years earlier. It had also been the site of his murder and was the spot where his ghost continued to linger. Jake was the first of the Davis brothers to encounter the phantom, after having just one shot of moonshine, which is an adult alcoholic beverage, once illegal, but now being produced and sold in stores. It is a watered down version of the original moonshine, but very strong. He was crouched down to unite some camping equipment, when a terrible chill seemed to pass right through his body. Standing up in a near panic, he looked around to see what might have caused the uncomfortable sensation. Judging by stillness of the nearby trees, it had not been wind that he felt. Equally puzzling was the fact that Frank seemed oblivious to any unusual occurrence, but Frank had not been drinking with Jake. “I told myself it was only my imagination,” Jake explained. So he offered his brother Frank a shot of moonshine, so he could warm up, and set about to finish the chore at hand. To help them stay warm, the brothers needed to build a fire pit. Thinking he saw an ideal spot, Jake called his brother over to see if he agreed. As Jake watched, Frank started to make his way across the 10 feet that separated them.

When Frank stopped and gave an enormous shudder, Jake knew that his brother had just experienced the same, strange sensation he had felt a few minutes earlier. “What was that? It felt like a sheet of ice passed right through me!” Frank blurted out. “I don’t know, but I felt it myself a few minutes ago,” Jake answered. “Well, whatever it was, I’m glad it’s gone. Yeah, that looks like a good location for the fire. What are you waiting for?” the older brother teased. “Get to digging!”
As Jake dug, Frank collected rocks to rim the pit. The men had not been working more than five minutes when each of them felt the same icy shadow pass through their bodies. “I’ve had enough of this place,” Jake exclaimed. “Let’s get out of here!” “Yeah, it feels like something keeps walking right through me,” Frank whispered. “I sure don’t like it—and I get the impression it doesn’t like us much either.” The two brothers packed up their gear in record time. Once they were safely back in Lone Pine, they began to make discreet inquires, at a local drinking hole. Before long, they were told about a little piece of local history that might have changed their camping plans if they had known about it beforehand. It seemed that Frank and Jake, like many others before them, had been attracted to the spot that MacSpreem had called home. No one actually seeing Mac’s ghost, but everyone was convinced that his invisible—and icy cold—soul remained at the site of his murder.

Mac seems to be merely carrying on with his life—after death—and probably has no idea that his bone-chilling presence has been spooking people for ages now. Then again, how could he know if he does not even realize that he is dead? Contrary to popular belief, alcohol is not a stimulant. The apparent gaiety at drinking parties is due to alcohol’s effect as a depressant. Small amounts of alcohol reduce inhibitions and produce feelings of relaxation and euphoria. Larger amount cause ever-greater impairment of the brain, until the drink loses consciousness. Alcohol is also not an aphrodisiac. It usually impairs sexual performance, particularly in males. Drinking provokes the desire, but takes away the performance. Abuse—Alcohol, the World’s favorite depressant, breeds our biggest drug problem. Over 200 million people in North America use alcohol. An estimated 25 million have serious drinking problems. An alarming trend is the high level of alcohol abuse among adolescents and young adults. Fifty person of male college students and 40 percent of college women are considered alcoholics because they binge drink. For fraternity and sorority members, the figure jumps to 84 percent—would be nice to see college student have more daytime parties, with no drinking, as it would reduce sexual assaults and deaths.

Binge drinking is defined as downing 5 or more drinks in a short time. However, many of you can actually only handle one mixed drink before you blackout. Apparently, many students think it is entertaining to get completely wasted and throw up on their friends. However, binge drinking is responsible for an estimated 50 death of United States of America college students a year and thousands of trips to the Emergency Room. Children of alcoholics and those who have other relatives who abuse alcohol are at greater risk for becoming alcohol abusers themselves. So are youths, who begin drinking, before the age of 15. Women also face some special risks. For one thing, alcohol is absorbed faster and metabolized more slowly by women’s bodies. The result is that women get intoxicated from less alcohol than men do. Women who drink are also more prone to liver disease, osteoporosis, and depression. A few as 3 drinks a week may increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer by 50 percent. In addition, women who abuse alcohol are more likely to face social rejection and stigma than men, who drink similar amounts. Encouraging reinforcement—drinking for pleasure—motivates most people, who consume alcohol, but what sets alcohol abusers apart is that they also drink to cope with negative emotions, such as anxiety and depression. That is why alcohol abuse increase with the level of stress in people’s lives. People who drink to relieve bad feelings are at great risk of catching the disease of alcoholism.

What are the signs of alcohol abuse? Because alcohol abuse is such a common problem, it is important to recognize the danger signals. The path from a social drinker to a problem drinker to and alcoholic is often subtle. Early warnings: you are beginning to feel guilty about your drinking. You drink more than you sued to and tend to gulp your drinks. You try to have a few extra drinks before or after drinking with others. You have begun to drink at certain times or to get through certain situations. You drink to relieve feelings of boredom, depression, anxiety, or inadequacy. You are sensitive when others mention your drinking. You have had memory blackouts or have passed out while drinking. Signals not to be ignored: there are times when you need a drink. You drink in the morning to overcome a hangover. You promise to drink less and are lying about your drinking. You often regret what you have said or done, while drinking. You are on social media drunk and cursing people out and think you are talking to demons. You have weekend drinking bouts and Monday hangovers. You have lost time at work or school because of your drinking. You are noticeably drunk on air Diane, at work, or on important occasion. Your relationship to family and friends has change because of your drinking.

In the initial phase, the social drinker begins to turn more often to alcohol to relieve tension or to feel good. Four danger signals in this period that signal excessive dependence on alcohol are: increasing consumption—the individual drinks more and more and may begin to worry about his or her drinking. Morning drinking is a dangerous sign, typically, unless you work nights and morning is your night. No one has the right to judge your purchases or when you make them. Regretted behavior is bad and a dangerous sign, you should not feel guilty or embarrassed. If you do, there is a problem. Be careful of blackout, abusive drinking may be revealed by an inability to remember what happened during intoxication. Drinking becomes crucial when a person loses control and after one drink is taken, they cannot stop drinking, it should not lead to a chain reaction. However, chronic phase is extremely concerning. At this point, alcoholics drink compulsively and continuously. They rarely eat, they become intoxicated from far less alcohol than before, and they crave alcohol when deprived of it. Work, family ties, and social life all deteriorate. Their self-drugging is usually so compulsive that when given a choice, the bottle comes before friends, relatives, employment, and self-esteem. The alcoholic is an addict.

Treatment for alcohol dependence begins with sobering up the person and cutting off the supply. This phase is referred to as detoxification (literally, to remove poison). It frequently produces all the symptoms of drug withdrawal and can be extremely unpleasant. Next step is to try to restore the person’s health. Heavy abuse of alcohol usually causes severe damage to the body organs and the nervous system. When alcoholics have dried out and their healthy has been restored, they may be treated with tranquilizer, antidepressants, psychotherapy or religion—maybe a combination of them all. Some people even benefit from group counseling, at Kaiser, Sutter, or Mercy hospital. However, there is a tendency for abusive drinkers to deny that they have a problem. If you think you have a drinking problem, then stop, and see how long you can go without having a drink. The sooner they seek help, the better. My vision of God is dependent upon the condition of my character. My character determines whether or not truth can even be revealed to me. There must be something in my character that conforms to the likeness of God. What I need is God’s surgical procedure—not moonshine. The use of God’s external circumstances tends to bring about internal purification. Keep paying the price. Let God see that you are willing to live up to the vision. I will write of God’s great love forever; my typewriter will make your faithfulness known through all generations. God’s love stands firm forever.

Climacteric–Change of Life

It is clear that difficulty at the midpoint of life is not universal. Most people thrive during the age of 50, and have no serious issues. A transition period ends one life pattern and opens the door to new possibilities. At such times, people address concerns about themselves, their work and their relationships to others. While in Saudi Arabia, Carol and her husband, John Muir, a Bechtel executive, had dreamed of becoming inn keepers. Fantasy took a quantum leap toward reality when the couple put last things first. While vacationing in Nepal, Carol and John visited a rosewood factory where, on an impulse, they placed an order for ten tables, forty chairs, ten mirror frames, trim for forty doors, and one magnificent front door. Now they have to do it! Upon returning to California, Carol and John proceeded to search for the perfect house to use as a hotel style bed and breakfast. However, the search was elusive, until one day saw John Paxton’s mansion.  John Paxton was a state legislator, who made a fortune in mining, banking, lumber.  It was a Gothic Victorian mansion with a wraparound veranda and mansard roof; everyone was awed by the fascinating grand mansion, set on a knoll, surrounded by towering trees. The mansion was built in 1880, and it was the showplace sitting on a 40-acre ranch. However, in 1887, Hannah Paxton received word that her husband, John Paxton, had died of a sudden heart attack, on a steamer, while returning from a business trip to Liverpool.

The body was returned to Hannah, and she kept it in a leadlined, glass coffin, in the house until her own death in 1902. The couple’s two sons, Blitz and Charles, inherited the dynasty. Blitz Paxton, who took over the family mansion, as well as the presidency of the Bank of Santa Rose, shocked the community by deserting his wife and their two children to marry another woman. And his brother, Charles Paxton took his  life after his wife deserted him for another man. The Paxton mansion was sold in 1913, and passed from one owner to another, until the bright Victorian was held together by prayers, standing empty and waiting. In 1982, when Carol and John Muir purchased the house, Carol wondered about the former tenants. Who had walked within those walls, loving, laughing, and crying? What angry words were spoken there? She had inkling that the house just might be haunted. A crew of carpenters from Red Bluff would drive down late Sunday, working and camping in the house, until their return him on Friday. None of them saw anything. However, Carol swears she could feel a presence, and had a sense of being watched and she often complained of things being moved to strange, unexpected places. However, John Muir believed it was nonsense. Carol used to complain that there was not much to do, and when the night falls, it is like a great black curtain over the entire estate. As Carol was sleeping, one night, she got the thrill that she had been begging for. Carol suddenly awakened to confront a woman, possibly in her mid-20s, wearing a long black dress, a narrow black ribbon fastening her white Peter Pan collar.

Carol then closed her eyes, and forced herself to breathe more slowly. When she felt more in control, with fear and trepidation, she opened her eyes. The woman had moved and was sitting in the blue velvet chair by the window. “What do you want?” Carol asked. There was no answer and as she watched, straining to make out more details, the slender form dissolved. A few years later, during breakfast, on 19 June 1986, Carol had another episode. After completing dinner, Carol was startled to see one of the French doors open and a small gray-haired lady dressed in the clothing of the last century entered the room. No one else was aware of here, but as Carol continued to stare, the woman approached. “I am glad that you can see me, I feel so badly sometimes that no one can. This was my house once and I like what has been done to it. I would like to tell someone that—now you can tell them,” the mysterious woman said. Carol could not tell her husband, John Muir, what had happened. Her husband had been sitting beside her the entire time and had seen nothing; but Carol Muir felt the need to confide her experience. Then she literally shrieked because a cup of coffee revolved on its saucer right before her eyes. It is hard to ignore that kind of evidence, but John Muir did not even blink an eye, as if nothing even happened.

Attractive, gregarious, and highly efficient—it seemed Carol Muir was losing her mind. Often some people see their 50s as the last chance to achieve their goals. Such goals often started as a key event, such as reaching a certain income, or becoming a supervisor, a full-time professor, a shop steward, and so forth. For these individuals, like Carol Muir, the midlife period was stressful, but manageable. A smaller percentage of men experience a serious midlife decline, and that is probably why John Muir did not notice the “ghosts.” Often, this pattern of decline is based on having chosen a job haunted by a dead-end or lifestyle.  In some cases, it meant that the men did not decline because they have achieved material success; unless they believe what they are doing is pointless. It seems that Carol was having a midlife crisis, which can be both a danger and an opportunity. Ideally, the midlife transition involves a time of reworking old identities, of achieving long-sought goals, of finding one’s own truths, and preparing for later maturity and aging. Much like John and Carol, it important to emphasize again, however, that many people’s lives differ greatly from the generalized description. Adult development is complex and each person’s path through life is unique. At the very least, however, in can be noted that everyone’s life repeatedly moves through cycles of stability and transition; when individuals reach their 40s and 50s, declining vigor, strength, and youthfulness make it clear that more than half of their years are gone! At the same time, greater stability comes from letting go of the impossible dream. That is, there is an increased attempt to be satisfied with the direction one’s life has taken and to accept that hoped for life goals may longer be possible.

Perhaps Carol’s midlife crisis was extreme because for most women, their 50s is when they experience menopause. At menopause, which occurs at an average age of 51, monthly menstruation ends, and a woman is no longer able to bear children, in most cases. At the same time, the level of hormone estrogen drops—sometimes causing changes in mood, mental state, vision, and/or appearance. Menopause also may cause symptoms, such as hot flashes (a sudden uncomfortable sensation of heat) or night sweats.  A few women, like Carol Muir, find menopause as difficult to adjust to as adolescence, and some experience anxiety, irritability, hallucinations, or depression. Most women, however, are neutral about the loss of reproductive ability—some are actually happy not to menstruate and no longer be fertile, so menopause is not all bad, there are some good aspects. All considered, the vast majority of women easily take the pause in stride, with no major emotional problems.  Carol learned to brag about her son’s cooking—Todd, a graduate of the California Culinary Academy, worked at the famed Chez Panisse Restaurant before coming to the Madrona—or discuss her prized winning wine lost, than ponder ghostly possibilities. “If you can say live and let live, about a ghost (menopause) that is how I feel. I do not bother them—they do not bother me. We are happy,” reports Carol Muir.

Males do not undergo any physical changes that are directly comparable to menopause. With aging, the production of the male hormone testosterone gradually lessens. However, men remain fertile, at this time. One the other hand, aging males may be affected by changes in their appearance and physical vigor. Some 40- to 60-year-old men do appear to pass through a climacteric, change of life. However, their symptoms (depression, anxiety, and irritability) are probably psychological in origin. Well-being at Midlife–the pitfalls of adulthood are all too familiar: marital discord, divorce, career difficulties, unemployment, health issues, financial pressures, legal conflicts, and personal tragedies—to name, but a few. How do people maintain a state of well-being as they run the gauntlet of modern life? Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Your Heavenly Father knows you need these things. However, seek first, his Kingdom, and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Do not judge, or you too will be judged.

For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the stars in my eyes, and pay no attention to plank in your own eye? How can you say to me, let me monitor you and show you what you are doing wrong, when all the time it is none of your business? You hypocrite, first clean up your thoughts and life, and then you will see more clearly to be the change in society that you want to see.  Well-being during adulthood consists of six elements: self-acceptance, good relationships with others, personal freedom, environmental mastery, a purpose in life, and continued personal growth. Thus, sharing life’s joys and sorrows with others, coupled with a better understanding of how the World works, can help carry people through the midlife period and into their later years. Signs of aging may be unmistakable, in middle age, but people are also at their peak, in many respects. Instead of emphasizing decline, many of today’s adults seek active, healthy lifestyles. This can make the middle-age years a good experience, not something to be dreaded or endured. You no longer are trying to impress people, you do not have teenager dramas, and you know what you want in a mate. So there are benefits to aging. Enter through the narrow gate, for the wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. However, small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

JUST IN Jobs Report: Esteem is the Groundwork of Happiness

There is commonly something extraordinary in the fortunes of those who fly from society.  If people were equal tomorrow and all wore the same coats, they would wear different coats every day.  In December of 2014, the United States of America added 252,000 jobs to the economy. Where are these jobs being created? Well, professional and business sector increased the number of jobs by 52,000. There have also been increases in construction where we saw 48,000 new jobs created. Many experts, like Rebecca Jarvis, chief business and economic correspondent for ABC World News are surprise to see such a high increase in food services jobs, which saw employment numbers surge by 44,000, which is 14,000 above expected projections. There were 34,000 new positions created in the health care industry, and manufacture experienced modest growth of 17,000 jobs. The average hourly earnings, however, decreased by $.05, to $24.57 an hour, which means the average worker makes $47,174.40 annually.

Losing a job can be the most distressing economic event in a person’s life. Most people rely on their labor earnings to maintain their standard of living, and many people get from their work not only income, but also a sense of person accomplishment. Typically, a job loss means a lower living standard in the present, anxiety about the future, and reduced self-esteem. Unemployment means that people are not employed, are unavailable for work, and have tried to find employment during the previous 4 weeks. It also includes those waiting to be recalled to a job, from which they had been laid off. The unemployment rate is currently 5.6 percent, which is just a little above the natural unemployment rate of 5.2 percent. Here are the unemployment rates by worker groups: adult women are at 5 percent, adult men are displaying a rate of 5.3 percent. Teens have the highest unemployment rate of 17 percent, while African Americans come in with the second highest unemployment rate of 10 percent, which is almost twice as high as the national unemployment rate. Hispanics are experiencing a 6.5 percent rate of unemployment, and Asians are doing the best with only 4 percent unemployed.

Measuring the amount of unemployment in the economy might seem like a simply task, but it is actually more complex than it seems. While it is easy to distinguish between a person with a full-time job and a person who is not working at all, it is much harder to distinguish between a person who is unemployed and a person who is not in the labor force.  Because people move into and out of the labor force so often, statistics on unemployment are difficult to interpret. One the one hand, some of those who report being unemployed may not, in fact, be trying hard to find a job. They may be calling themselves unemployed because they want to qualify for a government program that financially assists the unemployed or because they are actually working and paid under the table. It may be more realistic to view these individuals as out of the labor force or, in some cases, employed. However, some of those who report being out of the labor force may want to work.

Nonetheless, most spells of unemployment are short. These individuals may have tried to find a job and may have given up after an unsuccessful search. Such individuals are called discouraged workers. Discouraged workers do not show up in unemployment statistics, even though they are unemployed because they have been out of the work force for more than 4 weeks. One reason economies always experience some unemployment is job search. Job search is the process of matching workers with appropriate jobs. If all workers and all jobs were the same, so that all workers were equally well suited for careers, job search would not be a problem.  Teens and African Americans supposedly have such high unemployment rates due to the fact that some are allegedly inexperienced and require an advanced degree.

In Fact, workers differ in their tastes and skills, jobs differ in their attributes, and information about job candidates and job vacancies is disseminated slowly among the many firms and households in the economy. There are currently 2.8 million Americans, who are long-term unemployed (discouraged workers), they have been jobless for 27 weeks or more, and account for 32 percent of the employed, but because they have been out of the workforce for so long, they are considered jobless, not unemployed. Nearly 66 percent of nonworking men ages 25 to 64 received income from some source. Among those with unearned income, the average amount was $11,551.00 a year, with the largest sums coming from Social Security and disability payments. However, could you imagine being single and living off of $962.58 a month—in many places you would not even qualify to rent an apartment because your income is less than the average rent of $1,003.00 a month. Not surprisingly, wives are also an important source of financial support for nonworking men, but only 42 percent of male non-workers between the ages of 25 and 54 are married; compared with 68 percent of their employed counterparts. So many people are left wondering, if you only make $962.58 a month, how you can even afford to live, as they do not qualify for food stamps and some individuals alone spend $400.00 a month on food.

Well, Social Security is usually for people who retire. By the time they retire, these people have paid off their cars, homes, and only have to worry about utilities, and are usually married, so they are fine, and probably having savings. However, some people are young and disabled. They once used to work and make a lot of money, but are now hurt and cannot afford to work and are living on disability, so how are they able to make it? Well, some of them get settlements, for being injured at work or in an accident, and they used that money to pay for their housing and live off disability, until they are well enough to go back to work, or decide that they would rather run the risk of reinjuring themselves, or making the injury worse, than to live off of such low pay.  Another misconception I want to clear up, not all people who are disabled or lazy or disfigured, nor are they crazy. Maybe there is something internal going on. You actually have some coworkers who are mentally disabled and physically disabled, but they are still able to work.

However, for those who cannot work or choose not to, living off of less than $1,000.00 a month can be challenging. The experiences of nonworking adult men and women can be quite varied, and many have severe disabilities. A lot of them end up homeless because they cannot afford to rent or live out of shelters. Others rent rooms from people, or someone is kind enough to share a sofa with them. Others are lucky to find limited low income housing and still life on tight budgets. And I know what you are thinking….but what about the people born with disabilities and cannot work.

Well, their parents usually build a nest egg for them and support them their entire lives, and that is far better than aborting a child. And some born with disabilities do, in fact, work and make just as much as your local news anchor. So there is always hope.  The one thing I do not recommend is abusing government services because it is a trap, when you have to go back to work or need to, you will have no skills and be competing with teenagers for low skill jobs, and it will crush yourself esteem. Not only that, but you have a new added cost of getting to work and pay for insurance. Speaking of transportation, the United States of America is seeing gas prices drop to less than $2.00 a gallon, so that may help some who are jobless, in their search for work, and lower fuel prices will help those who commute everyday put more food on the table. Therefore, esteem people for what we find in them, not what they may have been. Even people with high incomes do not want you in their financial information because they do not want people to target them and use them for their income, position, assets, network or resources—love me for who I am, no matter if I am rich or poor.

Behind me is Infinite Power

The most scared engagements are daily violated; friendship and love, the most endearing bonds of society, are made a cloak to perpetrate the most execrable villainies, the ruin of innocence, the destruction of the most unsuspecting and honest men and women. It is a heathenish and atheistical dogma, to assert, that people are born evil; that evil is implanted in, and is co-existent with his nature; and that an inevitable combination of circumstances makes the commission of what is termed crime unavoidable to him. Either we must suppose that the love of evil is born with us (which would be an insult to the Deity), or we must attribute them to the suggestion of infernal influence. After a settling down period somewhere in the age of 20s, adult development is uniform and uninteresting, right? Wrong! A fairly predictable series of challenges is associated with development from adolescence to a classic age. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

What personality changes and psychological developments can a person look forward to in adulthood? One can be very happy with much less trouble, than very wise. From ages 16-18, youth are trying to escape from parental dominance. Efforts to do so cause considerable anxiety about the future and conflicts about continuing dependence on parents. Happy is the man or woman, who knows his or her follies in youth. You are the salt of the Earth. However, if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled on. If we act only for ourselves, to neglect the study of history is not prudent; if we are entrusted with the care of others, it is not just. Leaving the family usually occurs between the ages of 18-22. The majority of people breaks away from their families, in their early 20s, leaves home and builds new friendships with other adults. These friends serve as substitutes for the family and as allies in the process of building new bonds. You are the light of the World. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven.

Every calm is succeeded by a storm, as is every storm by its calm. Building a workable life is usually a trend that happens from the ages of 22-28, people seek to master the real World. Two dominant activities are striving for accomplishment (seeking competence) and reaching out to others, a lot of adults seek intimacy at this time. Married couples, in this age range, place a high value on unity. Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your work will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the ungodly one. If we act only for ourselves, to neglect the study of history is not prudent; if we are entrusted with the care of others, it is not just. When one is the age range of 29 to 34, many people experience some challenges in life. The issue is usually what life is all about? Assurance about previous choices and values tends to waver. Unsettled by these developments, the person actively searches for a style of living that will bring meaning to their life. Marriages are particularly vulnerable during this time of dissatisfaction. Extramarital affairs and divorces are common symptoms of the crisis of questions. It has been reported, anyone who divorces must give a certificate of divorce. However, I tell you that anyone who divorces their spouse, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes their mate to participate in adultery.

Crisis of urgency–with these unsophisticated savages, the history of a day is the history of life. People ages 35 to 43 are typically beginning to become more aware of the reality of death. Having a limited number of years to live begins to exert pressure on the individual. Intensified attempts are made to succeed at a career or to achieve one’s life goals. Generativity, in the form of nurturing, teaching, or serving others, helps alleviate many of the anxieties of this stage. Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in Heaven. Basically, do not do nice things for others just to look good. If you do well for others, it must come from your heart for you to receive a blessing from God.
Attaining stability—everything may be dreaded from a hypocrite. What you wanted in purity of heart, will be supplied by exterior sanctity. The urgency of the previous stage gives way to a calmer acceptance of one’s fate in their late 40s. The predominant feeling is that I am whole, complete; know the World and I know myself. I know what I am looking for in life and in a mate. Those who have families begin to appreciate their children as individuals and ease up on their tendency to extend their own goals to their children’s behavior. You have heard that it was reported, love your neighbor and hate your enemy. However, I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons and daughters of your Father in Heaven. He causes his Sun to rise on the ungodly and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what are you doing more than other? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your Heavenly Father is perfect.

Some have considered the larger part of humankind in the light of actors, as personating characters no more their own, and to which they have no better title than the player hath to be earnest thought the king or emperor who one represents. Thus the hypocrite may be said to be a player; and indeed the Greeks called them both by one and the same name. Mellowing occurs around the vibrate age of 50 and up. Emphasis is placed on sharing day-to-day joys and sorrows There is less concern with glamor, people know that they are naturally beautiful and desirable, therefore, they are not as concerned with wealth, accomplishment, and abstract goals—they want to meet real people, with real hearts and real happiness—no matter what they do for a living or how much they make a week. Many of the tensions of earlier years give way to desire to savor life and its many pleasures. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on Earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. However, store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven. That means do not go around acting and buying things to look good and make people like you, be a good person and let people love you for who you are, not what you can buy them or how you can increase their status. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

It is generally the conscious over-fullness of conceit that makes the hypocrite most upon his guard to conceal it. What makes life good is a sense of purpose, wisdom, creativity, achievement, and love. Wealth is largely irrelevant to judgments of whether a person was leading a good life. Clearly, people want to be happy, it is desirable. Having a sense of meaning (a purpose or goal in life) also appears to be important. However, there is very little connection between income and happiness. I know people who make four times are much as I do, and they are never happy or nice. I do not even think they like themselves. Not to say being rich is bad, being rich is good and some people really enjoy it, but you do not have to be rich to be happy. Happiness comes from the inside of your heart and your actions. Perhaps some people, who have a lot, are unhappy because of the methods they used to gain their wealth. Money may make it possible to buy material objects, but money cannot buy a good life. Happiness and meaning usually come from other sources. I must learn that the purpose of my life belongs to God, not me. God is using me from His great personal perspective, and all He asks of me is that I trust Him. When I stop telling God what I want, He can freely work His will in me without any hindrance. He can crush e, exalt me, or do anything else He chooses. God simply asks me to have absolute faith in Hi and Hid goodness. I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ.

Where did you People get this Wisdom and these Miraculous Powers?

Fieldwork is a hallmark of journalism. Living with men, women and children—experiencing their work, social patterns, thoughts, and values—is one of the characteristics that often distinguishes our approach from that of other social sciences. Journalism is currently coming out of an era of hiring people not based on talent, but because of whom they are and who they know, which actually took away the credibility and academic focus of the news. In other words, the television news is moving back to the former model, where people were hired because of their skills, credentials and talents. This will actually improve the quality of news and reporters that come across your screen. Because hiring based on nepotism, established priorities and limited the availability of trained journalist and researchers. Although many reporters have emphasized the nation’s desire to drive toward modernization, some government leaders (Jerry Brown of California) still express concern about the possible emergence of a scholarly elite media, committed to challenging the present political direction of California. However, journalism cannot be separated from politics, and its impact on living and non-animated objects. Needless to say, questions of objectivity, in the development and utilization of knowledge, are raised in the United States of America, and other countries, too. A well-known example, in America, is the heated debated carried on by members of various newsrooms, and financial societies, on the role of retirement and pensions. The dollar lost 92 percent of its purchasing power, after World War II (1945) to the 2015. Therefore, the federal government’s recent policies are focusing only on current employment, and are crippling many retirees.

When you retire, your income is fixed, which means it does not really change, you have a set amount of money to live off of, until your body and mind retires. Therefore, skyrocketing prices of food, housing, clothes, and energy really hurt those who are retired, and they do not drive much, so do not really notice a reduction in fuel cost. Not only that, but the federal guarantee program, for private pensions, plans is running a $62 billion deficit, with many multi-employer pension funds expected to go bankrupt in the next ten years, and this will put many retirees at risk, and will soon wipe out much of the savings of millions of people in America. Keep in mind the Federal government is only funded through 2015 September 15, and then it runs the risk of shutting down. As a result, Administrations may be forced to print and distribute trillions of dollars in fiat currency over the next decade, which could lead to hyperinflation. Although Earthquakes can wreak much havoc, on a society, much like the billion dollar Napa Earthquake of 2014 August 24, they have the beneficial byproduct of providing much useful data for seismologist. The data can then illuminate theories, and help society predict and deal with future threats. Similarly, hyperinflations offer monetary economist a natural experiment they can use to study the changes in the money supply and price level of the economy. Hyperinflation is a situation where the inflation exceeds 50 percent per month. This means that the price level will increase more than 100-fold over the course of a year. Therefore, when the central bank increases the money supply rapidly, the result is a high rate of inflation. So basically, in 2015, car may cost $45,000.00, but with hyperinflation, it would cost $4,500,000.00 the next year. However, wages and transfer payments will no keep up. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them, reports Jesus Christ.

Developing countries, like America, could improve their standard of living without succumbing to the myriad of problems that come with expanding urbanization. Including its attendant dislocation and unemployment, heavy industrialization, with its heightened exploitation of the rural sector; increased economic dependence on outside capital, with the all-too-frequent inflationary spiral that accompanies it. The only way to improve life, and avoid hyperinflation is by not having money be the focus of your life.Yes, you still need to work, and pay bills, but learn to trade, save and enjoy free aspects of life. What I mean buy that is if you have a friend who knows how to paint, and you are an accountant, maybe they can paint your house and you do their taxes. That was you are not adding to hyperinflation by using fiat currency. Another thing you could do is stop buying cars, and technology (phones) unless you really need them. Yes, you have an extra hundred dollars, but the goal is to live life debt free. Pay off your debts and only buy what you need. You can also take a brown bag lunch to work, and eat outside with your co-workers and friends. The less debt you make, the better off you are. I will be honest; I think the community is improving vastly. Everyone, no matter race, culture, gender, or creed seems to be comfortable, happy or contempt. They are all getting along well, and respecting each other, and it is so nice. Not to mention, the city is beautiful. You walk into the stores, like Safeway, and they treated you like an honored guest. Men open doors for women, and people go to the park to just sit down and read books. I am completely overwhelmed by the transformation of the city of Sacramento going back to its former glory. People come here and it is so peaceful they think it is a ghost town.

There are a lot of breathtaking sights, and the educational institutions have some of the best perspective students, teachers, administrators, and other participants. Cosumnes River College is a great school. I know a lot of people try to make people feel ashamed to go to a junior college by saying it is for low income students, or people who are not too serious, but that is just to discount the value of your experience and education. However, blessed are your eyes because they see and your ears because they hear. For I tell you the truth, many students and professors longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it. Listen then to what the parable of this paragraph means. I have gone to college in China, and at Cosumnes River College, and at Sac State and even taken a class at University of Irvine, and the UCI, CRC and Beijing Language and Culture University off a very similar style of education. They want to make sure you are prepared for an Ivy League education. Junior colleges actually get compliments about how well prepared their students are and how they actually read the books from cover to cover and actively participate in lectures. The good men and women bring out the good that is stored in them. Behind me is infinite power. Before me is endless possibility. Around me is boundless opportunity. Why should I fear? A career is only one of the major challenges of adulthood; we will focus more on that later. However, I wanted to get back to the economy and tell you, do not let it stress you out, nor worry too much. Do your best to make money, cut unnecessary expenses and save money. The Earth has been around for 5 billion years, and people used to life off the land for free.

As long as the Earth is spinning, human life will go on. Instead of focusing on what someone does for a living or how much they make, get to know them as a person. Find out what they like, what they watched on TV and why they liked it. What are their hobbies, you know, really try to connect with people. Also, you may even want to get a book about communication or appropriate things to say at the water cooler. Also, remember, no one likes to feel bad or be made fun of. Park the sarcasm and move on. We are all trying to break out of a seriously flawed life structure, and 2015 is about starting over and being happy and peaceful. We are trying to rebuild the last 13 years. The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went out and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. Once again, the kingdom of Heaven is like a net that was let down into the Sacramento River and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fisherman pulled it on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of age, and that is why I am telling you not to worry so much about money, fait currency and finances. Do your best, but do not worry because the angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw the unlovely into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have you understood all of these things? Therefore, every teacher of the law, who has been instructed about the kingdom of Heaven, is like the owner of a house, who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as historical ones.
