Man Tells—Restructuring Inner Maps

It is one thing to process memories of trauma, but it is an entirely different matter to confront the inner void—the holes in the soul that result from not having been wanted, not having been seen, and not having been allowed to speak the truth. It is to the credit of human nature, that, expect where its selfishness is brought into play, it loves more readily than it hates. Hatred, by a gradual and quiet process will even be transformed to love, unless the change be impeded by a continually new irritation of the original feeling of hostility. If your parents’ faces never lit up when they looked at you, it is hard to know what it feels like to be loved and cherished. If you come an incomprehensible World filled with secrecy and fear, it is almost impossible to find the words to express what you have endured. If you grew up unwanted and ignored, it is a major challenge to develop a visceral (internal organs) sense of agency (feeling of being in charge of your life) and self-worth, which is why so many people focus on the elevation of their houses, status of their careers, and material possession. However, if your heart and mind are not in the right place, none of that even matters. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 6

Many people wonder why some do not seem to benefit from therapy when it is clear that they have a problem. Some adults just continue to harass and attack others and you know for a fact that it cannot feel good to harbor such harsh feelings in one’s body. Like, the goal of their day is to wake up and inflict pain and suffering onto others for no good reason. Well, the problem with these defective people is that they felt unwanted as children, and those who did not remember feeling safe with anyone while growing up, did not fully benefit from conventional psychotherapy, presumably because they could not activate old traces of feeling cared for. So they are in pain, and they want to make others feel their pain and feed off of you. Turn away from those type of people. Despite their hard work in therapy and their share of personal and professional accomplishments, they cannot erase the devastating imprints of a mother who was too depressed to notice them or a father who treated them like he wished they had never been born. If they could reconstruct those implicit maps of mental trauma, it is clear that their lives would change fundamentally. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 6

How can we help people become viscerally acquainted with feelings that were lacking early in their lives? Well, using brain scans to visualize mental states, instead of opinion is one way that could make psychiatry more of a science and not junk science. Many experiments used in psychiatry that might be revealing are impractical, unethical, or impossible to do. In instances such as these, information may be gained from a case study (an in-depth focus on all aspects of a single subject). Clinical psychologist rely heavily on case studies. Case studies may sometimes be thought of as natural clinical test (accidents or other natural events that provide psychological data). Gunshot wounds, brain tumors, accidental poisonings (like knowing someone has a latex allergy and continuously and prolonged exposure to latex), and similar disasters provide much information about the human brain, but conducting these experiments without knowledge of the participant could be consider attempted murder. Unnecessary experimentation on children and unnecessary and questionable human experimentation is not limited to pharmaceutical development. In experiments at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a genetically engineered human growth hormone (hGH) is injected into healthy short children. Consent is obtained from parents and affirmed by the children themselves. However, children are still developing and do not have the mental capacity to understand the impact nor the implications that these experiments could have on their lives, and many of the parents do it for financial gain, and have a total disregard for the lives of their child. The children receive 156 injections each year in the hope of becoming taller. Short stature, of course, is not a disease. The hGH injection, on the other hand, poses significant risks, both physical and psychological. Those injections are linked in some studies to a potential for increased cancer risk, are painful, and may aggravate, rather than reduce, the stigma of short stature. Moreover, while growth rate is increases in the short term, it is unclear that the final net height of the child is significantly increase by the treatment. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 6

The studies also put healthy children and adults at risk. Case studies can provide special opportunities to answer interesting questions. For instance, how do you know what kind of person you are? Would your self-image change if you lost your memory for past events? However, a biased sample does not accurately reflect the population from which it is drawn. And no one should have to bear so much pain. Experimenting with someone’s life, for unethical and unlawful scientific research, is no different than what happened in Fort Myers, Florida USA. Early Monday morning, at 12.30 am, on 24 July 2016, a shooting outside a nightclub’s teen party for people ages 12 to 27 left two people dead. In fact, 14-year-old Shawn Achilles and 18-year-old Ste’fan Stawder were killed and 14 others were injured with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening. Authorities detained three adults in relation to the shooting, but the motive remains unclear. You can compare this to an unethical case study because the perpetrators knew the shooting would hurt some and kill others, much like scientist know their case studies are harmful to human life. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 6

Protagonists become the directors of their own plays, creating around them the past they never had, and they clearly experienced profound physical and mental relief after these imaginary scenarios. However, the victims are left with painful experiences. People process spatial relations with the right hemisphere of the brain, and our neuroimaging research had shown that the imprint of trauma is principally on the right hemisphere as well. Caring, disapproval, and indifference all are primarily conveyed by facial expression, tone of voice, and physical movements. Up to 90 percent of human communication occurs in the nonverbal, right-hemisphere realm. Projecting your inner World into the three-dimensional space of a structure enabled you to see what is happening in the theater of your mind and gives you a much clearer perspective on your reactions to people and events in the past. As you position placeholders for the important people in your life, you may be surprised by the unexpected memories, thoughts, and emotions that come up. You can experiment with moving the pieces around on the external chessboard that you have created and see what effect it has on you. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 6

Rough Grace is Required to Create Structure

It is not that something different is seen, but that one sees differently. It is as though the spatial act of seeing were changed by a new dimension. Let your body relax, close your eyes, focus your attention inside, and ask that critical part—the one you identified as callous—what it is afraid would happen if you stopped your ruthless judgment. Some think that is they criticize others; nobody can hurt you. These people incorrectly think that by hurting others they are protecting themselves against emotional assaults and humiliation. Human emotional expressions are a carryover from a more primitive stage of human evolution. Notice how tigers, monkeys, dogs, and humans all bare their teeth in the same way during emotional rage. That is why in some culture it is considered offensive to smile. Emotional expressions retained during the course of human evolution allow for communicating feelings to others as a means to assist survival. For instance, a tiger might growl at you in an effort to get you to back off, letting you know it feels threatened, and is going to defend itself before you have a chance to attack him. Emotional expressions give us valuable hints about what others are feeling. It would be difficult to live, work, or play with others without such messages. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

Many adult facial expressions are influenced by learning. As a result, some are unique to certain cultures. Among the Chinese, for example, sticking out the tongue is a gesture of surprise, not of disrespect or teasing. And in Victorian culture and Middle Eastern culture, spitting in someone’s presence is a sign or extreme disrespect and a lack of hygiene. If a person comes from a culture other than your own, it is wise to remember that you can easily misunderstand their expressions. At such times, the social context in which the expression occurred helps us interpret what others are feeling. Despite cultural differences, facial expressions of fear, anger, disgust, sadness, and happiness (enjoyment) are recognized around the World. Contempt, surprise, and interest may also be universal, although researchers are less certain of these expressions. Facial displays and gestures that express complex emotions can be difficult to judge accurately. For instance, a father ditched his Sun and smiled at him and he followed this lady who had been stalking his son. He did this to let he know she was a threat and that he was watching her, as the father never smiles. He is actually known for looking stern or grumpy even when he is happy. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

Faced with the fear of losing his family, Ben Crawford, felt uncomfortable by the idea that his son was becoming too Americanized. When Ben arrived at the house, his son was excited to see him, but he slapped him for disobeying his orders and thinking he was cute, but got caught cutting class, when he knew he was not supposed to be walking around outside by himself. I was surprised that this harsh callous man knew exactly how to take care of his son. Then Ben put his arms around the boy to show him that he loved him. Ben actually wanted his son to play at beautiful camp garden where he could play and frolic with the ponies while he watched over him. In this sense he has taken his son out of danger and has a feeling of control over him and the environment. Responses are reinforced that lead to mastery of threat or control over one’s environment. People who undergo such training become more resistant to learned helplessness. This might be a way to immunize people against helplessness and depression by allowing them to master difficult challenges. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

To cut through illusions, we have to get disillusioned—the more thoroughly the better—so long as we do so at a pace that allows for proper digestion of the shifts we are making. Before us stretches an array of digestive assistance: there is a pill of sedation, and there is the pill of thrill, and then there is the pill that wakes us up in the midst of our dreaming and scheming. We do not require a prescription for these, since the inevitable challenge of life do a great job of providing them. Disillusionment is commonly taken to mean a kind of disappointment, a sense of being let down, but they very structure of the word speaks of something much more fundamental: being free from illusion. This of course, might sometimes feel far from pleasant, hence the darker connotations of disillusionment. A crucial challenge is to stop treating disillusionment as a problem or something negative, and use it as an awakening force. See through the illusions, and this will in conjunction release its hold on you. If a challenge is not delivered with at least some compassion, it will tend to overpower rather than empower, and will generate either submission or rebellion. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

Mastery training can occur informally when people learn to cope with challenges. For instance, 18- to 21-year-old trainees on a transatlantic sailing voyage showed marked improvements in their ability to cope with stress when they were stuck dealing with and maintaining a specific environment. Things as small as choosing what to eat for lunch or being allowed to decorate one’s room can be enough to counteract feelings of helplessness. Therefore, the value of hope should not be overlooked. As fragile as this emotion seems to be, it is a powerful antidote to depression and helplessness. As an individual, you may find hope in religion, nature, human companionship, or even technology (www.thedeedle.com ). Wherever you find it, remember its value: Hope is among the most important of all human emotions. Having beneficial beliefs, such as optimism, hope, and a sense of meaning and control is closely related to personal well-being. We thus become disenchanted, no longer spellbound by our conditioning. And fare more able to skillfully approach our edge. This is a kind of sobriety, a catalyst for waking up a great opportunity. This man certainly did not seem to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Ryan loved talking about his work, proud of the fact that residents and fellows competed fiercely to be on his service and also of scuttlebutt he has heard about his staff being terrified of him. He described himself as brutally honest, a real scientist, someone who just looked at the facts and—with a meaningful glance in my direction—did not suffer fools gladly. He had high standards, but no higher than he had for himself, and he assured me that he did not require anyone’s love, just their respect. Ryan also told me that his psychiatry rotation in medical school had convinced him that psychiatrists still practiced witchcraft, and his one stint in couples’ therapy had further confirmed that people in were in back room smoking dope and having séances, and that is why they could not distinguish the past from the present or the future and were mixing people up. He expressed contempt for people who blamed their parents or society for their problems. Even though he had his own share of misery, he was determined never to think of himself as a victim. While Ryan’s toughness and his love for precision appealed to me, I could not help but wonder if we could discover something I had seen all too often: that internal managers who are obsessed with power are usually created as a bulwark against feelings of helplessness. At the beginning of the 1990s, a number of people had become part of the Witchcraft and Neopaganism religious movements. It is estimated that there are 30,000 witches and neopagans in North America who practice magic, psychic healing, astrology, and “self-improvement.” Many of these witches actually strive for gender equality because Paganism is the only religion that not only perceives the Goddess as equal or superior to the God, but follows through by giving women equal or superior spiritual status. Satanism is often thought to be an unusual cult with virtually no literature, little organization, and few members. Most satanic cults include three to five members, and their life spans are typically a few months or at most a few years. Even Anton LaVey’s church, which I believe was in a black Victorian house, which if I am not mistaken was seized and torn down, had less than 5,000 members. Other tan exotic rituals that center on Satan motifs, individual pragmatisms and hedonism are more important that devil worship. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

Many people think that those who worship the devil are evil, but I have never seen them do anything bad. However, I see many Christians who are constantly gossiping, harassing people, fighting and starting wars in the name of “God.” Sometimes you can even walk into a church and I swear it smells like sulfur. Despite the fact that the number of Satanists is few and their influence is slight, many ordinary citizens remain convinced that satanic churches are growing and think that Satanism is a major threat to American society. Yet, many of them do not practice black magic nor voodoo. However, you hear Christian churches saying it is okay to kill people because they are homosexual. In fact, as the nation mourned the Orlando massacre, in which 49 innocent people were shot to death and 50 people were injured in a homosexual nightclub, a Verity Baptist Church Pastor Roger Jimenez called the victims Sodomites and said Orlando, “Florida USA was a safer place without them, and that no one should be grieving the homosexual victims of the shootings because they abuse children.” #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

The pastor Roger Jimenez went on to say, “Are you sad that 50 expletives were killed today?” asked Roger Jimenez. He then replied to himself and said, “Um no. I think that’s great. I think that helps society. I think Orlando, Florida, is a little safer tonight. The tragedy is that more of them didn’t die. The tragedy is I’m kind of upset he didn’t finish the job—because these people are predators. They are abusers. I wish the government would round them all up, put them up against a firing wall, put the firing squad in front of them and blow their brains out,” said Roger Jimenez a pastor at the Verity Baptist Church. My question is why are people like Roger Jimenez even allowed to live in America? Why does he not just move to Mexico or the Middle East or African where things like he is describing is legal. The purpose of the United States Constitution is to establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty and our Posterity for all American people. The Constitution seeks to address the inequities in the global economy by teaching the poor that poverty and suffering are neither God’s will nor the individual fate, but the result of specific social, political, and economic forces. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

Many people go to church every Sunday, but are still the most wicked people you will ever meet. They never talk about love, nor the Bible, but are always gossiping and hurting other people. In contrast, I have seen people who never go to church, but are very nice, and say nice things and always talk about the Bible. I guess it is true that your body is the temple of God and what matter is not how you look rushing up to this expensive church to worship some man who drives a car that cost more than your house, but what is important is what you feed your mind, body, and soul. In recent years, the New Age Religious Movement swept across America; today it includes hundreds of thousands of followers. New age offers a novel blend of magic and religion, ancient and futuristic beliefs, and utilitarian and mystical ethics and philosophies. It directly confronts the apparent chaos, destructiveness, fragmentation, and dehumanization of the contemporary society with a utopian vision of a New Age that will arrive after enough individuals have evolved to a higher spiritual consciousness. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 5

Distraction Can Reduce Pain—This Will Not Hurt a Bit

Pain rather seemed to increase life than to weaken life in these champions. However, the goal is to teach people how to accept and understand their inevitable fear, hopelessness, and anger and to treat those feelings as members of your own internal family. One must learn the inner dialogue skills that will enable them to recognize their pain, identify the accompanying thoughts and emotions, and then approach these internal states with interest and compassion. A basic problem usually emerges early, so many trauma survivors are alexithymic (have an inability to identify and describe emotions in the self), so they never complain about their pain or disability unless they are totally overwhelmed. When asked how they are feeling, they will almost always reply, “I am fine.” Heir stoic parts clearly helped them cope, but these managers also kept them in a state of denial. Some shut out their bodily sensations and emotions to the extent that they could not collaborate effectively with doctors. Cookin’ some fish–think about walking into a house where fried fish, sauerkraut, and head cheese were prepared for dinner. (Some dinner!) You would probably pass out at the door. Yet, the people who live there would be unaware of the smell of their food odor. Why? Because sensory adaption decreases our response to a constant or unchanging stimulus. However, if I took some of their food to work and heated it up in the microwave, my coworker might response by saying, “Whoa! It smells like shit here, what is it?!” Fortunately, the olfactory (smell) receptors adapt quickly. When exposed to a constant odor, they send fewer and fewer nerve impulses to the brain. Soon, the odor is no longer noticed. Adaptation to sensations of pressure from a wristwatch, ring, or glasses is based on the same principle. Sensory receptors generally respond best to changes in stimulation. We need above all not to know about changes; no one wants or needs to be reminded 16 hours a day that his shoes or on or that his back hurts. We simply learn to cope and limit our activities to reduce the sensations of the pain.

Basically, people learn to grin and bear it because no one wants to hear about their pain anyway. This is also called selective attention (voluntarily focusing on a specific sensory input). We are able to tune in on a single sensory message, while excluding others. Another familiar example of this is the cocktail party effect. When you are in a group of people, surrounded by voices, you can still select and attend to the voice of the person you are facing. Or if that person gets dull, you can ease drop (eavesdrop) on conversations all over the room. (Be sure to smile and nod your head occasionally!) The cocktail party effect is quite powerful. If you are listening to one person, another person nearby can talk backward and you will not notice the strange speech. What makes this possible? Selective attention appears to be based on the ability of various brain structures to select and divert incoming sensory messages. Then, as they asked the stoic parts to step back, they started to acknowledge the angry part that was in pain and wanted to tell and wreak havoc, the part that wanted to stay in bed all the time, and the exile who felt worthless because he was not allowed to talk. These people were raised to be seen and not heard—safety meant keeping their need under wraps. And that is why the antiquated generations are so strong. They were taught not to complain, to be quiet, polite, and respectful. And to work hard and they could get what they wanted out of life and that their word was their bond. Yet, some people feel trapped by conflicts at their job, where a manager part insisted the only way out was to overwork until their back pain flared up to the point where he could barely walk. And so, these type of people really need to dial it back a little and rest so they do not end up being paralyzed. When people have nerve damage, they may be injuring their body and not even be aware. Stop and think, what about messages that have not reached my brain? Is it possible that some are blocked while others are allowed to pass? Evidence suggest there are sensory gates that control the flow of incoming nerve impulses in just this way. Specifically, sensory gating refers to facilitating or blocking sensory messages in the spinal cord.

A fascinating example of sensory gating pain in the spinal cord is that one type of pain will sometimes cancel another. The gate control theory suggest that pain messaged from different nerve fibers pass through the same neural gate in the spinal cord. If the gate is closed by one pain message, other messages may not be able to pass through. How is the gate closed? Messages carried by large, fast nerve fibers seem to close the spinal pain gate directly. Doing so can prevent slower, reminding system pain from reaching the brain. Pain clinics use this effect by applying a mild electrical current to the skin. Such stimulation, felt only as a mild tingling, can greatly reduce more agonizing pain. So just because a person looks good and seems happy, you never know what they are going through. A visual inspect cannot tell you what is going on internally. For example, there are Victorian houses that look very beautiful inside and out, but you cannot see if the pipes are rotted out or if the studs are about to collapse, or if they knob and tube wiring is about to start a fire, unless a professional goes in an examines these things. Just like many used cars look nice, but you would not buy one without having a mechanic look under the hood, would you? So you never know what a person is going through just because they look good. It is not your job to manage the lives of other people. The sense of the human body supplies raw data to the brain, but the information remains mostly meaningless until it is interpreted. It is as if the senses provide only the jumped pieces of a complex puzzle. A variety of psychological factors affect the severity of pain. Psychological interventions can help people in physical pain. Cognitive behavioral therapies and mindfulness-based practices have also been shown to have a beneficial impact on pain, joint inflammation, physical disability, and depression. However, none of these studies has asked a crucial question: Are increased psychological safety and comfort reflected in a better-functioning immune system? Instead of listening to the whirr of a dentist drill, for example, you might imagine that you are lying in the Sun at a beach, listening to the roar of the surf. At the house, music can be a good distractor from chronic pain. Distraction can reduce pain.

Please Pray for those in Kabul, Afghanistan

There is so much going on in the World today, and I wish we all could learn to be more loving. There was a deadly attack in Kabul, Afghanistan on 23 July 2016. At least 80 people were killed and 231 wounded in a suicide bomb attack, on a peaceful demonstration, which was claimed by the Islamic State group. As a result, Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry has issued a ban on public gatherings of all type of the next 10 days. This news leaves us so saddened because human life is so precious. While we have so much to be thankful for, I would like to take this time to offer prayers for our brothers and sisters in the Middle East and all over the World. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. I arise today through the strength of Heaven; light of the Sun, splendor of fire, speed of lightening, swiftness of the wind, depth of the sea, stability of the Earth, firmness of the rock. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 2

How Zika is Impacting Eugenics Education Society

There are disturbing influences in our larger Universe not found in this smaller one, but the general drift of events is evidently the same. The rate of increase will be slackened. However, it lies with us to decide whether this shall happen destructively, with accompanying misery and degeneration, or constructively, in accordance with increasing knowledge. The “unclean spirits” which now possess Man may rightly be termed Legion. We know what happened to those Gadarene swine who were possessed by the spirits of Legion. However, it is still not too late for mankind to check the swift career down that steep place into the sea where the two thousand swine were choked. The goal of human life on Earth is now visibly in sight, and the great question before us is: What kind of people are they to be who will inherit the Earth? To-day is still in our power to determine the answer to the question. At the present rate of increase, the time when there will be no more room left on Earth is not so far distant, but that some of our grandchildren will live to see it. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 7

Now it is certain that the present rate of increase will not be maintained. The growing difficulty of obtaining food must cause an ever larger number to perish long before every swap has been drained and every desert and mountain top rendered available for agriculture. However, if we assume that Man will continue to make but feeble efforts to control his own fate, while the final catastrophe will thus be delayed, it will not be averted. All life, when left to itself, follows the same laws. At first very slow, the rate gradually increased, reaching he maximum probably the point at which Man is now arriving—and then began to decrease in rapidity, though numbers still increased, finally reaching a point at which the density of population will result in complete saturation. Currently, the Zika Virus Infection is a natural form of population control as the Earth starts to reach this point of complete saturation. There now are 1,404 people in the United States of American who have the Zika virus, and 3,827 people in US territories, for a total of 5,231 people infected in America and American territories. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 7

Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters, and they can also bite at night. Zika can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defect. Zika is not currently being spread by mosquitoes in the continental United States. However, mosquitoes that can carry Zika are found in some areas of the United States of America. There is no vaccine or medicine for Zika. Zika virus can be spread during the sex. A man with Zika virus can pass it to his female or male partners during vaginal, anal, or oral (mouth-to-penis) sex without a condom. Condoms can reduce the chance of getting Zika from the sex if used correctly from start to finish, every time you have vaginal, anal, or oral (mouth-to-penis) sex. Nonetheless, not having the sex eliminates your risk of getting Zika from the sex. We do not know if a woman with Zika can pass the virus to her partners, during vaginal or oral (mouth-to-vagina) sex. We do not know if Zika can be passed through saliva during kissing. We do not know if Zika passed to a pregnant woman during the sex has a different kind of risk for birth defect than Zika transmitted by a mosquito bite. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 7

Here, at the threshold of eugenics, which is the study or belief in the possibility of improving the qualities of the human species or a human population, especially by such means as discouraging reproduction by persons having genetic defects or presumed to have inheritable undesirable traits, we must find a reasonable practical instrument, whatever its defects, for limiting the family and eugenically moulding the future race is the method of contraception, henceforth the most obvious though not only form of birth control. It is practically a new method, and as yet has no measurable influence in restraining the ever increasing flood of human fertility. The pessimists may shake their heads, but it is too early to despair of the future of humanity and meekly become swine. Some day, let us be sure, the World will recognize all that it owes to those noble pioneers who, at the risk of obloquy, had the vision to see the fate that threatens Man and the courage to face it with hope. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 7

Ground for amusement has in fact not seldom been afforded alike by cranks and by well meant cranky legislation. It is just as foolish to suppose that a new race can be created by legislation as that a new morality can be so established. The details of the methods by which the human race may be purified and invigorated have always been left free and open because at the present stage of investigation, they cannot be determined. We would rather have eugenics to be a kind of religion than a subject for legislation, doubtless because Parliamentary statutes are only sound in so far as they approximate to common law and merely asset that which the community is already spontaneously doing. It is education that, above all, we need, education in existing knowledge and determination to assist the further growth of knowledge, together with training in personal and social responsibility. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 7

The process of Eugenics is probably taking place in England, with a threat of national decay, for the whole tone of a nation is permanently affected by the moral and intellectual contagion which is due to the presence in its ranks of persons of inferior type, even though they are not of the lowest type. No compulsory sterilization can be enforced here; it is a problem which must be met indirectly. Yet, clearly mother nature is stepping in with the Zika virus and making more people aware of how important having the protected sex is because otherwise, if you do not, a bug might bite you and you baby could be born with a serious birth defect that is extremely noticeable and will make them be born with an abnormally small head, and possibly an intellectual and physical limitations. In former days, sterilization meant castration, and while it was carried out extensively in the form, not only was it adopted to merely preserve the singing voices of boys, it has now been superseded. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 7

Castration, it is recognized, is harmful by depriving the organism of the internal secretions necessary for full development, which was indeed precisely why it was adopted from the Papal choirs. The methods of sterilization now employed have no wicked effect whatever on the organism. They merely present the sperm cell or the ovum from reaching their normal exit, and so inhibit procreation, while leaving the sexual desire and sexual potency intact. The operation itself is so slight that, on the man at all events, it can be carried out without interference with his daily work. That is why sterilization has become the safest and surest method of contraception when procreation is underisible. So simple it is indeed that the fear has been expressed that it might become popular among men who for selfish reasons did not wish to have children. That possibility, however, it should be added, is by no means to be regretted. People who do not wish to have children are the last people who ought to have children; they could make undesirable parents, and it is in the social, economic, and medical interest that they should be shut out from parenthood. Streets with Only One Side to them—Half Justice is Injustice

Mercy to a criminal may be gross injustice to the community. Because they hold memories, sensations, beliefs, and emotions associated with trauma, exiles are the toxic waste dump of the system, and it is hazardous to release them. Exiles contain experiences of inescapable shock—and with it, terror, collapse, and accommodation. Exiles may reveal themselves in the form of crushing physical sensations or extreme numbing, and they offend the reasonableness of the managers of the thought process and the bravado of the firefighters, in the mind, who defend you against unreasonable attacks so you do not spend your days alone hating life and whimpering alone in your bed. When exiles overwhelm managers, they take us over—we are nothing but that rejected weak, unloved, and abandoned child. The Self becomes blended with the exiles, and every possible alternative for our life is eclipsed. We see ourselves, and the World, though the eyes of our harshest critics and believe it is the World. In this state it will not occur to us that we have been hijacked. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 7

From many, when their life is hijacked by exiles, it is like being on the Albatross, during a White Squall. No matter how deep one penetrates into their psyche, no matter what levels of depth to which one descends, one finds a fundamental lack of clarity and sharpness between the various aspects of life and the problems and the issues with which one is struggling with. It is like you are being tosses around and shaken up and cannot see in front of your face, have no idea what is coming at you, but you know death is eminent. Keeping the exiles locked up, however, stamps out not only memories and emotions, but also the pats that hold them—the parts that were hurt most by the trauma. Usually those are your most sensitive, creative, intimacy-loving, lively, playful, and innocent parts. By exiling them when they get hurt, they suffer a double whammy—the insult of your rejection is added to their original injury. As you will soon discover, keeping the exiles hidden and despised will condemn you to a life without intimacy or genuine joy. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 7

As we have seen, those aspect of the mind that were programmed by evolution for purposes of survival are especially ripe for exploitation by various forms and mechanisms of unreality that we have identified for. Much of our thinking is accompanied by micromovements throughout the body. Micromovements are tiny, nearly imperceptible motions of the muscle. Peace may be broken without actual force, and that to destroy morality is to destroy public order which is the peace of government. Morality is the fundamental part of religion, so that an offense against morality is an offence against the common law. As we have seen, thinking sometimes takes place without language. Everyone has searched for a word to express an idea that exists as a vague image or feeling. Nevertheless, most thinking leans heavily on language, because it allows the World to be encoded (translated) into symbols that are easy to manipulate. Such meanings can influence how we think about important issues. Many early sociologists viewed deviant behavior, as a form of social pathology, a problem that potentially threatens the survival of society. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 7

Crime, mental illness, drug abuse, suicide, and other forms of deviance were viewed as social pathologies in need of study and remedy. Deviance is a result of the tensions or strain experienced by people because of their position in the social structure. The primary cause of deviance is social situations in which people, because of their place in the social structure, are unable functionally to purse socially accepted goals through culturally approved means. Most Americans are socialized from birth to strive for material possessions (e.g., nice houses, new cars, fashionable clothes, expensive jewelry) and high social status (usually based on the prestige of one’s occupation). While virtually all Americans are encouraged to internalize these measure of success, some find it impossible to attain them by culturally approved means (staying in school, hard work, thriftiness, and deferred gratification). When some people are not able to obtain the material possessions they want, they often feel loosely integrated into society and feel like they are not meaningfully integrated and might do some strange things for some change. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 7

Some people will find an adaptive strategy to innovate the advances they would like to see. Basically, they find a new way to do an old thing. Innovators internalize goals of society, but they either reject the culturally approved means of achieving them or, because they find the approved means unavailable, develop alternative means for pursuing the goals. For instance, most Americans have internalized goals of accumulating lots of money. The culturally prescribed way of realizing that goal is to stay in school, work hard, save, and defer gratification. Other ways to amass a fortune include robbing banks, dealing drugs, embezzling, participating in insider trading, and committing a host of other crimes. According to court records, 22 year-old Moussa Sissoko met Tiffany Paris in in 1999, while she was still in high school. When he found out she was pregnant with his child in 2000, he was at college in Florida and asked her to terminate the pregnancy, but she did not. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 7

Moussa Sissoko eventually moved in with Tiffany Paris, who was pregnant with his child, and had some cruel intentions. After Shane Sissoko was born, his father Moussa Sissoko got a job at a lock and security company and purchased a $750,000.00 life insurance policy for his new born son, Shane Sissoko. The father, Moussa Sissok, listed himself as the sole beneficiary on the policy. On 15 September 2001, Moussa Sissoko was watching his 3-month old son Shane, while Tiffany Paris was at work. Two hours after he put the baby to bed, Moussa called emergency medical services because Shane was unresponsive and bleeding from his nose. Shane was taken to a hospital immediately, but never regained consciousness and was on a ventilator for 10 days before it was removed and he died. Abusive head trauma, by either shaking and/or causing soft impact trauma to the child was determined to be the cause of death. Moussa Sissoko was convicted for his son’s death in 2002. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 7

Judge Michael Mason, who ruled alone on the trial asked it court, “Why would you put a $750,000.00 policy on a newborn infant?” Any reasonable person would wonder the same thing. “It seems to make no sense, just on its face,” the judge said. Moussa Sissoko claimed it was a form of a college saving plan for the infant. Some people may become involved in property offenses and even violent crimes because they find few legitimate opportunities to achieve some of the middle-class goals (especially material possessions) to which they aspire, or they are too lazy to work or think they are above the law and will never get caught. These blocked opportunities may lead to the formation of deviant subcultures that provide increased social statues through illegitimate means and support deviance such as dropping out of school, joining gangs, stealing, dealing drugs, or otherwise pursuing status and material possession through illegitimate means because they feel cut off from larger society and consequently find it function to band together for social purposes, mutual support and protection. Nothing, to the noble heart, is so afflicting as the consciousness of having done injustice. Moussa Sissoko killed his 3-month-old son Shane Sissoko in 2001 to collect the life insurance policy. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 7

If I am Not Decent I will be Indecent

Gratitude and treachery are merely the two extremities of the same procession. Awareness is paramount to the individuation process. One must surrender to the unconscious, first accepting that it was swayed, and always can sway, feelings and actions outside of one’s immediate awareness. The individuating person must strike a balance in allowing the unconscious to permeate one’s actions, while also remaining cognizant of and vigilant regarding its grasp. To allow for individuation to occur, one must occasionally let the ego sit back and simply observe. People have firefighters and managers that are inside of their brains, which control their pain and emotions. When someone triggers your exiles, which carry the burden of your trauma, your internal firefighters will go on a rampage and will do anything to make the emotional pain go away. Asides from sharing the task of keeping the exiles locked up, your internal firefighters are the opposite of managers: Managers are all about staying in control, while firefighters will destroy the house in order to extinguish the fire. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

Somewhere within the three-pound mass of the human brain contains all we know: ZIP codes, faces of loved ones, history, favorite melodies, the taste of cake, and much, much more. The struggles between the uptight managers of the brain and hypervigilant firefighters will continue until the exiles, which carry the memory of the trauma, are allowed to come back to the house and be cared for. Anyone who deals with survivors will encounter those firefighters. I have met firefighters who shop, hydrate, play computers games (www.thedeedle.com) addictively, have happy relationships, or exercise compulsively. A sordid encounter can blunt the trauma of an individual’s horror and shame, even if only for a few hours. Scientists are beginning to identify the exact ways in which nerve cells record information. Learning also alters the activity of the structure, and chemistry of brain cells. Such changes determine which circuits get stronger, and which become weaker. This results in a reprogramming of the brain that records information. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

Scientists continue to study a bewildering array of chemicals and brain processes that affect memory. If their research succeeds, it may be possible to help the millions of persons who suffer from memory impairment. Will researcher ever produce a memory pill for those with normal memory? Some neuroscientists are confident that memory can be and will be artificially enhanced. At presents, however, the possibility of something like a physics pill or a math pill seems especially remote. In fact, researchers have discovered that ADHD drugs like Ritalin and Proviigil may offer a boosts in mental performance, but it is a short term-crutch that can actually adversely impact the brain’s plasticity, interfering with an individual’s ability to plan ahead, switch between task, be overall flexible in their behaviors, and can even impair their memory. Methylphenidate (otherwise known as Ritalin and Concerta) is used by at least 1.4 million teens without a prescription, and studies have shown that young brains are very sensitive to methylphenidate and that even low doses can harm nerve activity in the brain as well as memory and complex learning abilities. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

It is critical to remember that, at their core, firefighters are also determined to protect the memory system and the brain structure. Unlike the managers, who are usually superficially cooperative during therapy, firefighters do not hold back: They hurl defensive statements and storm out of the room, never for an attack. Firefighters are vigilant, and if you ask them what would happen if they stopped doing their job, you discover that they believe the exiled feelings would crash the entire system of the self. They are determined to do the best they can to guarantee physical and emotional safety to prevent you from being harmed by attacks from the outside and keep you from harming yourself. And these systems rest only when the Self is able to take charge and feel safe. The individuating person must make a lifelong commitment to self-examination and knowledge of oneself. An evolving familiarity with the limits of one’s consciousness is central to avoiding the ignorance of a life unexamined. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

Words are only painted fire; a look at the fire itself. At its most basic, thinking is an internal representation (mental expression) of a problem or situation. (Picture a chess player who mentally tried out several moved before actually touching a chess piece.) The power of being able to represent problems internally is complex and involves attention, pattern recognition, memory, decision making, intuition, knowledge, and more. Seeing in your mind’s eye is closely related to seeing real objects. Messages from the eyes normally activate the primary visual area of the brain, creating an image. Other brain areas then help us recognize the image by relating it to memories and stored knowledge. When you form a mental image, the system works in reverse. A stimulus, such as an odor, a song, or a question, activates memories in higher brain areas. These areas send signals back to the visual cortex, where, once again, an image is created. True respect, true value, lies not in words: words cannot express it. The silent awe, the humble, the doubting eyes, and even the hesitating voice, better show it by much than, as the rattling tongue of saucy and audacious eloquence. Little said is soon amended. Do Not Cry—I will Give you Something to Cry About!

Internal family systems (IFS) is considered not just a passing emotional state or customary thought pattern but a distinct mental system with its own history, abilities, needs, and Worldview. Trauma injects parts with beliefs and emotions that seize them out of their naturally valuable state. For instance, we all have parts of our personality that are youthful and fun. When we are abused, these are the parts that are hurt the most, and they become frozen, carrying the pain, terror, and betrayal of abuse. This burden makes them toxic—parts of ourselves that we need to deny at all costs. Because they are locked away inside, IFS calls them exiles. At this point, other parts of the human system organize to protect the internal family from the exiles. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

These protectors keep the toxic parts away, but in so doing they take on some of the energy of the abuser. Critical and perfectionistic managers can make sure we never get close to anyone or drive us to be relentlessly productive. Another group of protectors, which IFS calls firefighters, are emergency responders, acting impulsively whenever and experience triggers an exiled emotion. Emotional literacy blends emotional sensitivity, understanding, and savvy. It means knowing what you are feeling while you are feeling it, and being able to both contain and openly express it. Each split-off part holds different memories, beliefs, and physical sensations; some hold the shame, others the rage, some the pleasure and excitement, another the intense loneliness or the abject compliance. These are all aspects of the abuse experience. The critical insight is that all of these parts have a function: to protect the self from feeling the full terror of annihilation. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5
The point is not to get rid of shame—an impossibility—but to develop enough intimacy with it so that it cannot crush or run you, regardless of its intensity. Children who act out their pain rather than locking it down are often diagnosed with oppositional defiant behavior, attachment disorder, or conduct disorder. However, these labels ignore the fact that rage withdrawal are only facets of a whole range of desperate attempts at survival. Trying to control a child’s behavior while failing to address the underlying issue—the abuse—leads to treatments that are ineffective at best and harmful as worst. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

As children grow up, their parts do not spontaneously integrate into a coherent personality but continue to lead a relatively autonomous existence. Parts that are out may be entirely unaware of the other parts of the system. Recognize that each part is stuck with burdens from the past and respecting its function in the overall system makes it feel less threatening or overwhelming. If one accepts the basic idea that people have an innate drive toward nurturing their own health, this implies that, when people have chronic problems, something gets in the way of accessing inner resources. Recognizing this, it is important to seek comfort and remove yourself from the problem. The first step in this collaboration is to assume the internal system that all parts are welcome and that all of them—even those that are suicidal or destructive—were formed in an attempt to protect the self-system, no matter how much they now seem to threaten it. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

The internal system of an abuse victim differs from the non-abuse system with regard to the consistent absence of effective leadership, the extreme rules under which the parts function, and the absence of any consistent balance or harmony. Typically, the parts operate around outdated assumptions and beliefs derived from the childhood abuse, believing, for example, that it is still extremely dangerous to reveal secrets about childhood experienced with the World. However, rather than being a passive observer, this mindful Self can help recognize the inner system, and communicate with the parts in ways that help those parts trust that there is someone inside who can deal with all the aspects of life. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 5

Neurosis Seems to be a Human Privilege

This innocent house: long have my ears been accustomed to such inversions of words. We all have parts. Right now, a part of me feels like taking a nap; another part wants to keep writing. Still feeling injured by an offensive electronic-mail message I received from a snake, a part of me want to hit reply on a stinging condescending message, while a different part wants to dismiss the message and pretend it never happened. Most people who know me have seen my intense, sincere, and irritable parts; some have met the gentle little baby that lives inside me. My children reminisce about going on family vacations with my playful and adventurous parts. We used to go to Robert’s Park in Oakland, California USA and my kids really enjoyed the long trails and pristine redwood trees, fresh and, and babbling brooks. It is a far cry from when you walk into the office, in the morning, and see the storm clouds over your boss’s desk, you know precisely what is slithering away. That angry part has a characteristic tone of voice, vocabulary, and body posture—so different from yesterday, when you shared pictures of the giant red wood trees, and cute little raccoons playing in the water with your kids. Parts are not just feelings, but distinct ways of being, with their own beliefs, agendas, and roles in the overall ecology of our lives. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

Close examination shows that such misunderstandings are based on the fact that the person is too fine an observer and understands too much. The more nervous two persons are, the more readily will they give each other cause for disputes, which are based on the fact that one as definitely denies about his how person what he is sure to accept about the other. And this is, indeed, the punishment for the inner dishonesty to which people grant expression under the guise of “forgetting,” of erroneous actions and accidental emotions, a feeling which they would do better to confess to themselves and others when they can no longer control it. As a matter of fact, it can be generally affirmed that everyone is continually practicing psychoanalysis on his neighbors, and consequently, learns to “know” them better than each individual knows himself. The road following the admonition of God leads through the study of one’s own apparently casual commissions and omissions. How well we get along with ourselves depends largely on our internal leadership skills—how well we listen to our different parts, make sure they feel take care of, and keep them from sabotaging one another. When in fact they represent only one element, parts often come across as absolutes when in complex constellations of thoughts, emotions, and sensations. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

If Rene shouts, “I hate you, Pissy!” in the middle of an argument, Ryan probably thinks she despises him—and in that moment Rene might agree. However, in fact only a part of her is angry, and that part temporarily obscures her generous and affectionate feelings, which may well return when she sees the devastation on Ryan’s face. Innocent, not to say pathetic, as this passage may sound, it is pregnant with painful inferences concerning Ryan’s social hygiene and moral character. For if Rene knew that Ryan found associating with them a little flat and dead, it follows he must have tried to befriend them. People seemed to want escapist fantasy, a feeling of personal identification with fictitious characters, even more than they wanted to actually get to know a person. Our goal is to reveal the underlying mechanisms operating today to produce unreality. Our hope is that is we have a better understanding of how unreality is produced, then we may have a better change of assessing both its influence and the possibility of its containment, if not reversal. Every major school of psychology recognizes that people have subpersonalities and give them different names. It must be admitted that the total possible consciousness may be split into parts which coexist, but mutually ignore each other, and share the objects of knowledge between them. The psyche is a self-regulating system that maintains its equilibrium just as the body does. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

The natural state of the human psyche consists in a jostling together of its components and in their contradictory behavior and the reconciliation of these opposites is a major problem. Thus, the adversary is none other than ‘the other in me.’ Modern neuroscience has confirmed this notion of the mind as a kind of society. When split brain research was discussed, it was concluded that the mind is composed of semiautonomous functioning modules, each of which has a special role. However, that o the idea that the self is not a unified being, and there may exists within us several realms of consciousness? From our [split-brain] studies, the new idea emerges that there are literally several selves, and they do not necessarily ‘converse’ with each other internally. A study of artificial intelligence declared that the legend of the single Self can only divert us from the target of that inquiry. It can make sense to think there exists, inside your brain, a society of different minds. Like members of a family, the different mind programs can work together to help each other, individually still having its own mental experiences that the others never know anything about. This gives a brief explanation of the characteristic differences between reality and unreality. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

The line between reality and unreality is vanishingly thin at best because it sometimes depends on executive functioning of the brain. How are you feeling and what are you sensing in that moment? Therapist who are trained to see people as complex human beings with multiple characteristics and potentialities can help them explore their system of inner parts and take care of the wounded facets of themselves. There are several such treatment approaches, including the structural dissociation model developed that is widely practiced in Europe. The internal family systems therapy (IFS) offers a systematic way to work with the split-off modules of the mind program that result from trauma. At the core of IFS is the notion that the mind of each of us is like a family in which the member has different levels of maturity, excitability, wisdom, and pain. The parts from a network or system in which change in any one part will affect all the others. Dissociation, therefore, occurs on a continuum. In the trauma, the self-system psychosis and their way of thinking and perceiving is entirely different from the frame of reference that most people experience. Parts of the self become polarized and go to war with one another. Self-loathing coexists (and fights) with grandiosity; loving care with hatred; numbing and passivity with rage and aggression.
