Delaware’s Favorite Dad Teaching the Pathway to Forgiveness

3Anger is binding, not freeing. Humans are a creature of fellowship, created with tendencies that find their fulfillment in a variety of natural groupings, each concerned with a certain facet of human’s life in society. One of those groupings was church, another the state. Church and state are differentiated primarily by reference to their different tasks. The concern of the church is the spiritual realm, the life of the inner human, the concern of the state is the temporal realm, the regulation of external conduct. In regulate external conduct, the general aim of the state is to ensure justice or equity in society at large. This equity has two facets. Obviously, the state must enforce restrictive justice, but the state should also secure distributive justice, doing its best to eliminate gross inequalities in the material status of its members. If the Senate makes a weak person weaker, it makes a strong person stronger, owing to the very temptations one must resist from the day one enters, the compromises one is forced to make, and the danger to one’s convictions from the subtler brains of others. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 5

You speak the Lord loving his own; you make out the Lord to be your own, and use your religion like a drug. There are some remains of religion left in the human mind, even after every moral sentiment hath abandoned it; the most execrable ruffian finds means to quiet the suggestions one one’s conscience, by some reversionary hope of Heaven’s forgiveness. It is the duty of the church to seek the welfare of the state, but equally it is the duty of the state to seek the welfare of the church. Thus, part of the state’s duty is to promote piety; and it is generally regarded that blasphemy is a civil crime. However, the church and state ought to be structurally independent of each other. Church officials are not, by virtue of their office, to have any official voice in the state; and state officials are not, by virtue of their office, to have any official voice in the church. There are none whose conduct should be so strictly watched as that of bailiffs, these necessary evils in the society, as their office concerns for the most part those poor creatures who cannot do themselves justice, and as they are generally the worst of people who undertake it. Good laws should execute themselves in a well-regulated state. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 5

Although the best forms of government will vary with circumstances, it is firmly believed that the ideal government would be a republic in which those of the aristocracy who are competent to rule are elected by the citizenry, and in which powers is balanced and diffused among a number of different magistrates. The magistrate has their authority from God. In a sense of their authority is God’s authority; for magistrates are ministers of Divine justice, vicegerents of God. Thus, the duty of the magistrate is to apply the law of God, implanted on the hearts of all and clarified in the Scriptures, to the affairs of civil society. To what extent and under what circumstances are regarded as civil disobedience as justified is a matter of debate. Where our self-interest sleeps and the real interest is awakened. God writes our new name only on those places in our lives where the Lord has erased our pride, self-sufficiency, and self-interest. Some of us have our new names written only in certain spots, like spiritual air. And in those areas of our lives we look all right. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 5

A true hearted lover forgets all trespasses, and a smile cureth the wounding of a frown. However, do not dare look at us when we are not in the mood. A true disciple is one who has one’s new name written all over themselves—self-interest, pride, and self-sufficiency have completely erased. What is clear is that the law of nature is regarded in some sense a standard by which the decisions of the magistrate are to be judged, and at the same time regarded revolutions which rip apart the entire fabric of human society as not to be condoned. A secure attachment combined with the cultivation of competency builds an internal locus of control, the key factor in healthy coping throughout life. Securely attached children learn what makes them feel good; they discover what makes them (and others) feel bad, and they acquire a sense of agency: that their actions can change how they feel and how others respond. Securely attached children of God learn the difference between situations they can control and situations where they require help. They learn that they can play an active role when faced with difficult situations. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 5

In contrast, people with histories of abuse and neglect and abuse learn that their terror, pleading, and crying do not register with their caregiver. Nothing they can do or say stops the beating or brings attention and help. In effect, they are being conditioned to give to when they face challenge later in life. There are enough negative influences in our life without adding more. Especially when we look at the fact that all emotions generate vibrational energy in the Universe, what is the point of surrounding ourselves with negative thought forms about those we view as enemies? Why go out of our way to hold onto them as enemies by stockpiling resentments and negativity in ourselves? Likely, when we review our own personal experiences, we will see relinquishing anger brings us many benefits. We are free to experience emotional comfort and ease, gratitude for the daily opportunities to grow and heal, mutual caring with another without subtle special demands or limitations that affects something such as an agreement, improvement in health, and more life energy. These breakthroughs allow us to move up to a more effective and effortless state of state of inner freedom. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 5

A Good Conscientia is the Best of All Narcotics Written Upon the Heart of All!

All that virtue can afford is quietness of conscience and a steady prospect of a happier state; this may enable us to endure calamity with patience, but remember that endurance must suppose pain. Conscience (conscientia), as a subjective mode of revelation, is closely related to the sense of divinity. Conscience too, is part of the native endowment of all humans, written upon the heart of all. It is sort of knowledge whose object is God’s will; or, equivalently, the difference between good and evil, the law of God, or the law of nature. Inward law written, even engraved, upon the hearts of all, in a sense asserts the very same things that are to be learned from the [Decalogue]. Decalogue is the Ten Commandments, the list of ethical principles in Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:4-21 in the Holy Bible. It is a basic set of rules carrying binding authority. The Decalogue requires perfect love of God and of our neighbor. Of all liars and false accusers, a sick conscience is the most inventive and indefatigable. However, no evil is insupportable (unable to be endured; intolerable), but that which is accompanied with consciousness of wrong.

The subjective awareness of divinity and of its will can be supplemented by reflecting on the structure of the external World and the pattern of history. [God has] not only sowed in human’s minds that seed of religion of which we have spoken but revealed himself and daily discloses himself in the whole work-human-ship of the Universe. As a consequence, humans cannot open their eyes without being compelled to see God. The Universe is a large book, a mirror, and a theater for the display of God’s attributes—preeminently for the display of his goodness to us but also of his glory, wisdom, power, and justice. God can be known through his works, but not by speculation concerning his essence. It is by nourishing God’s sense of divinity and his conscience, with the contemplation of God’s works, that humans can in principle arrive at a knowledge of God. We know that God is everywhere; but certainly, we feel his presence when his works are on the grandest scale spread before us; and it is in the unclouded night-sky, where his Worlds wheel their silent course, that we read clearest his infinitude, his omnipotence, his omnipresence.

When you would conceive of the great Being truly and fully, you must be able to realize the duration of eternity, obliterate the little periods of time and chronology, which require a starting and resting-place in our human minds—soar out of the reach of the sickly atmospheres which surround these little planets, and stand straight in the broad and fathomless light of God’s own atmosphere. Nothing, but vast wisdom and unlimited power should dare to sweep off humans in multitudes; for it is only the one that can know the necessity of the judgment; and what is there, short of the other, that can replace the creatures of the Lord? Human folly is not needed to fill up the great design of God. There is no stature, no beauty, no proportions, nor any colours in which humans themselves can well be fashioned, that is not already done to their hands. Humans only reap the harvest they have sown in the World. Even in this life, God is just. Long may it remain in this mixed World a point not easy of decision, which is the more beautiful of the Almighty’s goodness—the delicate fingers that are formed for sensitiveness and sympathy of touch, and made to minister to pain and grief, or the rough hard hand, that the heart teaches, guides, and softens in a moment

Sin is a resistance to God’s demands. Thus, sin is not primarily ignorance about God; although such ignorance, or blindness will always be a consequence. Sin is an active willful opposition to God, as a positive refusal to acknowledge his demands of worship and obedience and as a deliberate alienation from him. Its prime characteristic is perversity, and its root is ordinarily pride and self-love.  A person who does not know God because he or she refuses to worship and obey him can still know or believe a variety of propositions about God that happen to be true. I hold with Christ that afflictions are not sent by God in wrath as penalties for sin. Human’s natural ability to know God is the greatest genius. Certainly, I do not deny that one can read competent and apt statements about here and there in the philosophers. However, knowing or believing competent and apt proposition about is not sufficient for knowing God; human’s proud refusal to worship and obey God led them to resist acknowledging the truth about God. Sin, although primarily a matter of the will, infects human’s reason as well.

Perversity leads to blindness and distortion, and these people infected by sin always show a giddy imagination. Their seeing does not direct them to the truth, much less enable them to attaint it. Thus, human’s willful alienation from God is not merely that one does not know God, but also that one’s views about God are not so incomplete and distorted that nothing at all can be built on them. People who do not know God are always infuriated and ignorant because the effects of sin are far more pervasive then have been indicated. Not only does sin disrupt human’s relation to God; it thereby spreads corruption throughout the whole of human, animal, and plant life. Of course, sin does not impair the human’s natural faculties as such, not immediately, anyway. Reason and will are humanities chief faculties, and human beings in sin may be as intelligent and as capable of making decisions as the individual who knows God. The corruption is to be found, rather, in the use we make of our native capacities. The greatest spirits, when overwhelmed by their afflictions, are subject to the greatest dejections.

Human nature will not flourish, any more than a potato, if it be planted and replanted for too long a series of generations in the same worn-out soil. If we are to state accurately what sin does to human’s use of their native talents, we must distinguish between human’s supernatural gifts, their abilities concerning Heavenly things, and their natural gifts, and their abilities concerning Earthly things. The supernatural gifts comprise human’s ability to know God, to worship him properly, and to obey him inwardly as well as outwardly. However, we have been stripped of these gifts. The natural gifts pertain to matters of the present life, such as government, household management, all mechanical skills, and the liberal arts. Concerning these, our abilities have certainly not been destroyed. Not only are ancient law, medicine, and natural philosophy worthy of the highest admiration, but humans, even in their estrangement from God, retains some sense of the laws that must be obeyed if human society is to be preserved. Humans, through natural instinct, are supposed to foster and preserve society.

Consequently, we observe that there exist in all human’s minds Universal impressions of a certain civic fair dealing and order…And this is ample proof in the arrangement of this life no human is without the light of reason. However, although the human’s abilities concerning Earthly things have not been destroyed, they have been profoundly corrupted. Both reason and will have been gravely wounded; the mind is both weak and plunged into deep darkness. And depravity of the will is all too well known. If human’s natural gifts are to be restored, their sin must be overcome; they must come to know God. We have already seen that for this purpose human’s conscience, their sense of divinity, and their awareness of God’s revelation in the objective World are all inadequate. How can you remove God from a World he created, and expect people to behave? Because they are not God’s people. They worship meaningless paper, and will burn the flesh and spill blood for paper, because that is their deity. However, God’s people know, no matter what people put you through, all this pain and suffering is better than burning in Hell for eternity.

Thus, if human life is to be renewed, it is necessary that God should choose some special means. This he in did by revealing himself with special clarity to the World, culminating in the life and words of the Holy Bible. When God leads people to respond to this revelation with faith, then humans again knows God. Indeed, faith, consisting as it does in clear knowledge about God coupled with proper worship and true obedience, is a certain sort of knowledge of God—that sort which focuses on Christ as interpreted in the Scriptures. Thus, there is never a contrast between faith in God and knowledge of God; rather, given human’s prior perversity, faith is the only kind of knowledge of God availed to humans. Also, faith is never understood in scholastic fashion as an assent to divinely revealed propositions. Rather, the object of faith is God as revealed in Christ. The death side—in the process of sanctification, the Spirit of God will strip me down until there is nothing left but myself, and that is the place of death. Lord, show me what sanctification means for me. He will show me. It means being made one with Jesus. Sanctification is not something Jesus puts in me—it is Himself in me!

Mechanism of Creation and the Itinerary of the Mind to God AB7446-AB7315

Humans must every be the slave of routine; but in the old days it was a routine of great thoughts, and now it is a routine of little ones, and we must revert to the predecessor. The programming of human concerns as a legitimate scientific endeavor represents the central hope of all scientific-love-seekers. Sensation is the necessary cause of our ideas, feelings, needs, and will. Since sensitivity is the connection between the biological life and mind, the mental is only the physical considered from a certain point of view. The stomach is a machine for digesting food, and the brain is a machine for digesting impressions, by the secretion of thought. There are no causes except those which can act on our senses, no truths except in relation to the general way of feeling of human nature, which varies with such optimistic factors as age, gender, disposition, health, climate, and so one. To act right simply because it is one’s duty is proper; but a good action which is the result of no law of reflection shines more than any! To do right, for the pure love of right, or the love of God, is a very difficult thing. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 13

Thus, the state of abdominal viscera may influence the formation of ideas. People are regularly thrust into situations that put them in danger, and so they gain protection from the anxiety surrounding death by investing in supernatural beliefs that make them feel, in some way, immortal. Generally, religious beliefs involve supernatural thinking: thoughts and attitudes that relate to entities, events, or actions that are at odds with our understanding of the laws of physics. Supernatural thinking is a normal part of human development, which can help people understand what they see around them. The first point is to know one’s own mind. The next is, to act up to the decision. We are not judges of our own ailments: physicians do not often prescribe for themselves.Perhaps, on the whole, more power is lost than gained by habits of secrecy. When each individual has subdued one’s own spirit, then there will be no war and no other enemies to conquer. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 13

Supernatural thinking helped our ancestors make sense of the World. The organs, like all else in nature, are in constant motion, and are therefore involved in decomposition and recomposition. If we accept God as infinite, all must be contained in Him. Where, then, is there a place for matter outside of God? It is believed that God is a voluntary self-contraction with the concept of emanation. God, prior to creation, was actually infinite. To make room for creation, however, He voluntarily contracted or limited Himself. Some excess of spiritual substance overflowed into the space from which God had removed Himself, and this excess, or emanation, is how the World was created. The completed series of emanation served the additional purpose of providing the conduit by which humans aspiring spirit might reach the heights of divinity; thus, it served both as the mechanism of creation and as the itinerary of the mind to God. Supernatural beliefs are still activity in the twenty-first-century and are derived from faith in God and the power of prayer. And believing in God serves psychological functions. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 13

Believing in God manifests psychological well-being because it increases people’s sense of control when they feel uncertain or stressed out. For instance, Elle Woods had to attend church one morning, and she had some animosity towards Polly. So, in perpetration, she drank some sweet tea before church to calm her nerves. “I had to drink a jar of sweet tea before church because if I seen this harlot at the cathedral, I was finna kick her grits (in reference to ‘Kiss my Grits’ from Mel’s Diner).” Because supernatural beliefs are at odds with a scientific understanding of the World, though, tension may arise between religious individuals who hold such beliefs and nonreligious people who reject such beliefs. Religion is like an ancient weapon, but many people are “frightened with your sorcerer’s ways” because they think it has the power to conjure up the stolen data tapes or gives clairvoyance enough to find the rebel’s hideaways. Therefore, religion can create friction between believers and nonbelievers and can be a source of animosity and derision. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 13

Though science and religion are often portrayed as being at odds with each other, we have the framework to help organize and make sense of the information.  This allows science and religion to co-exist peacefully. Sensitivity and irritability is a basic biological phenomenon; sense both are dependent on the nerves, they are essentially the same. There are metaphysical forces beyond science at work in the World, which will lead to a coronation a reign of truth, justice, and mercy. The ideal of salvation in thus the establishment of an Earthly paradise of human life, raised to its highest humanity. There is an idea that this regeneration cannot take place until all pre-existing souls have had satisfactorily completed their Earthly existence and that, since some souls are too weak to go unassisted through life to perfection, other superior souls might coexist with them in one body to insure their success. Transmigration means to pass from one condition, place, or body to another. The entrance requirement for God’s kingdom is a new birth. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 13

Transmigration is usually identified with the Greek word metempsychosis (change of the soul), the transmigration of souls draws on the Greek Orphic mysteries, which combined genuine piety with magic. “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, one cannot see the kingdom of God,” reports Christ in John 3:3-8. Nicodemus wondered, how could be born when he is old? Christ replied “Most assuredly, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, one cannot enter the Kingdom of God. The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. And all who trust in Him—God’s Son—to save them have eternal life; those who do not believe and obey Him shall never see Heaven, but the wrath of God remains upon them,” reports Christ in John 3.36. German Hasidism promoted a new religious ideal of spiritual equanimity. They believed that God could assume a visible form in the guise of fire and clouds. It is not the mystic who ascends through the palaces, but the relational aspects of God that descends to humans. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 13

The three chief elements in this devoutness were mental serenity, ascetic renunciation, and extreme altruism, leading to heights of devotion in which true fear of God and love of God becomes one. At these heights, the Hasid is thought to achieve a creative power of a magical nature. God can be made manifest in the World through prayer. God is one and unique, yet He can create occasional representations of Himself that can appear in a visible form in the World. Despite the problems inherent in reporting that God has a created representation on Earth, the German Hasidim were able to preserve both the concepts of God’s absolute uniqueness and His accessibility to humanity. The nervous system is affected by internal changes, that is, by memory and imagination; thus, within humans exists another internal human in constant action, the effects of which are noticeable in dreams. The pre-scientific conception of the dream which obtained among the ancients was, of course, in perfect keeping with their general conception of the Universe, which was accustomed to project as an external reality that which possessed reality only in the life of the psyche. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 13

Many people take for granted that dreams are related to the World of Supernatural beings in whom believe, and that they brought inspirations from the gods and demons. Moreover, it appears to some philosophers that dreams must serve a special purpose in respect of the dreamer; that, as a rule, they predicted the future. Further, it accounted for the main impression made upon the waking life by the morning memory of the dream; for in this memory the dream, as compared with the rest of the psychic content, seems to be something alien, coming, as it were, from another World. It would be an error to suppose that the theory of the supernatural origin of dreams lacks followers even in our own times; for quite apart from pietistic and mystical writers—who cling, as they are perfectly justified in doing, to the remnants have been swept away by scientific explanations—we not infrequently find that quite intelligent person, who in other respects are averse to anything of the romantic nature, go as far as to base their religious belief in the existence and co-operation of superhuman spiritual powers on the inexplicable nature of the phenomena of dreams. #RyanPhillippe 8 of 13

The validity ascribed to the dream-life by certain schools of philosophy—for example, by the school of Schelling—is a distinct reminiscence of the undisputed belief in the divinity of dreams which prevailed in antiquity; and for some thinkers, the mantic or prophetic power of dreams is still a subject of debate. This is due to the fact that the explanations attempted by psychology are too inadequate to cope with the accumulated material, however strongly the scientific thinker may feel that such superstitious doctrines should be repudiated. However, the hereditary disposition, the state of the organs, dreams, and automatic or unconscious impulses are factors that are more significant than experience (sensations) in determining the individual’s behavior; for the tabula rasa concept ignores what the child or adult brings to experience. The influence of temperament is the determining effects of the inherited physical constitution. Because of heredity, the human race can be improved by hygienic methods. #RyanPhillippe 9 of 13

The inheritance of acquired characteristics and can be used to advance the species through crossbreeding, programs of eugenics will do for the human species what human beings have done for dogs and horses. Psychology tends to impoverish human experience by reducing it to the physical and mechanical level, and by denying the possibility of transcending internal and external sensations. Humans are ultimately considered to be their own justification and the master of their own destiny. They have faith in their capacity to progress indefinitely by means of their own resources. God is too close to humans and the World to be the Supreme Mystery that the mystical temper insists He must be. God Himself, the Boundless, the Infinite, the Transcendent, did not perform the material act of creating the World. This was the work of lesser spirit, or demiurge, who was brought into existence by God in order to do this specific job. As the conception of God’s transcendence developed, one demiurge seemed insufficient to express the sense of awesome distance between the divinity and the material World. #RyanPhillippe 10 of 13

The remoteness of God from the World was heightened, therefore, by adding other intermediaries and thus forming a chain from God to matter whose links were increasing materiality. Intellectual abstraction is an act of objective illumination. The first principles of reasoning are known by virtue of the sense experience; not only them meaning of the terms of such principles but also the nexus of the judgment enunciating them originates in sense perception. Thus, our knowledge comes from the sense. Concerning the human soul, it is immortal. However, immortality of the soul is not rationally demonstrable, the mysteries are put in faith. Nonetheless, there are reasons not everyone can invent flying machines, even now that the blueprints exist. Nearly all wisdom we possess consists of two parts: the knowledge of God and ourselves. Knowledge of God is so interrelated with knowledge of ourselves that the one cannot be had without the other. When we accurately reflect on ourselves, we realize that our exercise of these gifts that our being is subsistence with the one God. Without this realization of our misery and dependence—especially of our misery—none of us comes, or even tries to come, to a knowledge of God. #RyanPhillippe 11 of 13

On the other hand, there is also no knowledge of self without a knowledge of God. Without a standard by which to measure ourselves, we invariably yield to pride, overestimating the worth of our natural gifts and overlooking the corruption that has resulted from the exercise of those gifts. The philosopher, without knowing God, can give us so much accurate and worthwhile information concerning human’s faculties and constitution. However, philosophy cannot yield a true estimate of our worth and condition. It is very important to understand what it means to know God. To know God, we must know the truth about God and an essential aspect of our knowledge of God is our acknowledgment of his attitude toward us, especially his attitude of benevolence and love. God’s benevolence toward presupposes worshiping and obeying him. The concept of knowing God, there is no knowledge of God apart from worship of, and obedience to, him. What can be known about God is never his nature (quid est), but only what he is like (quails est); and more specially, what he is like toward us. #RyanPhillippe 12 of 13

How is knowledge of God to be achieved? Knowledge of God can, in principle, be achieved by nourishing one’s subjective awareness of deity and its will, with reflection on the structure of the World. There is, within the human mind, and indeed by natural instinct, as awareness of divinity [sensus divinitatis]. The Universally innate sense of divinity in humankind, accounts for the Universality of religion in human society. It is a seed of life; it was not invented by the subtlety and craft of a few to hold the simple folk in thrall. Never tolerate, because of sympathy for yourself or for others, any practice that is not keeping with a holy God. Holiness means absolute purity of your walk before God, the words coming from your mouth, and every thought in your mind—placing every detail of your life under the scrutiny of God Himself. Holiness is not simply what God gives me, but what God has given me that is being exhibited in my life. All of us possess every good and bad instinct in the whole book of human nature, but few of us have imagination enough to find it out. No one knows till the time comes, what depths are within one. #RyanPhillippe 13 of 13

The Heart Knoweth–Read the Language of these Wandering Eye Beams

ghbjnkml,When you view another person as less than human, you feel entitled to do whatever you want to the person. Fear of those who are different can lead to mistreatment; fear of losing power and privilege can lead to inequality; fear of change can lead to close-mindedness; and fear of pain can lead to desperation and betrayal. Why do some feel guilty about hurting people who have hurt them over and over without seeming to care about the consequences? Many of us actually have a conscience and care about people. Some prefer to deal with problems in private, but that is not always possible and it can be embarrassing when you are trying to help a person and when they do something bad, they run and hide. However, deep down you know that person is hurting and being a good person you do not want to hurt them in return. And although people may know what is going on, it is still very embarrassing to get upset with another person and the perception of being means and knowing that you might have made someone sad, can in turn make you sad. When you combine unhealthy fear with a lack of empathy, you open a psychological door that allows people to harm others without pangs of conscience. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 7

IMG_-rfk3gxWe are all ready to be savage in some cause. The difference between a good person and a bad one is the choice between the cause. The lack of human companionship or the loss of a loved one can have serious effects on our physical and mental well-being. And, somethings can trigger painful memories, especially when the person has not apologized nor paid for the damage. Some people will do things they know hurt you because they know that it will alter your life and because you pain. And others allow them because they need money. Sometimes we can tell people who hurt us have good inside, there is a light hidden deep inside the dark shadows. Both light and the dark sides unite us all. The unconscious is not just evil by nature, it is also the source of the highest good: not only dark but also light, not only bestial, semihuman, and demonic but superhuman, spiritual, and divine. Even if other people have hurt us or behave in ways we do not understand, why should try to be kind to them because traumatic brain injury can alter the way a person acts, feels, or thinks. An individual may not be able to express himself like he was able to in the past. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 7

catch-hell-image-ryan-phillippe-stephen-louis-grushJust like many people see others who look perfectly normal, but they are autistic and we may be unaware. However, because the people look perfectly normal, we expect them to behave in certain ways and community the way we do, but they may not be able to. A normally empathic individual will be particularly prone to experiencing sadness when others around him or her feel blue, fear when others get scared, or happiness when others are upbeat. And some people do not communicate verbally as others do. They speak with their eyes, facial expression, and the like. And so, learning to forgive others is to make sure we do not coldly exploit them or hurt them when they may need us most. Basic human emotions such as fear and anger, all of which serve a variety of adaptive survival function, send some down the path to the dark side. Good people can lose touch with their own moral concerns for many reason beyond their control when they do not learn to forgive and try to understand others. That is why it is important to rise to the occasion when friends and others need you most, especially if you know the worse days are behind you. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 7

There was once these two little boys, and they both were pretty normal. However, one went away to Summer camp and suffered a traumatic injury and his friend did not know. When he came home, the boy who suffered the injury looked angry and made faces at his friend and then would vanish for weeks, then return and just look at his friend and walk away. So, of course this created conflict between the two. Then the boy who went to Summer camp, let the air out of his friend’s bike tires and locked his bike so he could not use it. And the boy got so upset that he yelled and screamed at his friend and did not want to talk to him anymore. However, later on, he found out the boy who went to Summer camp suffered an injury and had late set autism. And he did not know how to verbally communicate. So, he would do things like let the air out of his friend’s tires so he would not go anywhere and get hurt. And he would vanish because he was sad and liked to spend time alone in his room watching the TV. Different strengths contribute to our virtues. People judge heroic acts in terms of how altruistic those actions are, the degree to which they involve selflessly helping other is not always clear. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 7

We have to remember that just because people look normal, it does not mean that they do not have physical, mental, or verbal limitations. One delightful discovery we will make when we learn to accept others and ourselves as we are, we discover that our capacity for love is far beyond what we ever dreamed. The more we let go of our expectations of others, the more loving we become. As this happens, our life will become transformed. We look different. People respond differently to us. We are relaxed, happy, and easy-going. People are attracted to us because they feel comfortable and happy around us. As we let go of the negative, we come into our own power. So, the boys we talked about earlier, the one who was not autistic finally realized his friend has changed. When he saw him one night and said, “Hello,” and his friend just opened his mouth and tried to say, “Hello” back, but the words did not come out. No one told him that his friend had went through some changes because it was a private matter. What made him finally let go of his anger and see that something was different is because he did not want to be a bully, too. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 7

rtyuijklLove is the most powerful of the emotional vibrations. For love, people will go to any lengths and do things that they would never do for any amount of money. When I turn to God and by belief accept what God reveals, the miraculous atonement by the Cross of Christ instantly places me into a right relationship with God. And as a result of the supernatural miracle of God’s grace, I stand justified, not because I am sorry for my sin, or because I have repented, but because of what Jesus has done. Having the reality of God’s presence is not dependent on our being in a particular circumstance or place, but is only dependent on our determination to keep the Lord before us continually. Our problems arise when we refuse to place our trust in the reality of God’s presence. If our everyday decisions are not according to His will, God will press through them, bringing restraint to our spirit. Then we must be quiet and wait for the direction of His presence. It is generally recognized that children need love, and if they do not receive it from their biological parents, society has an obligation to help them. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 7

Similarly, when adults suffer from interruptions in dialogue of life—when they are bereaved, experiencing divorce or separation, living alone or lonely—they too need help, and it is in society’s collective interest to provide it. How many persons we meet in houses, whom we scarcely speak to, whom yet we know, and who know us! How many we see in the street, or sit with in church, whom though silently, we warmly rejoice to be with! Read the language of these wandering eye-beams. The heart knoweth. We must also remember another aspect of the connection between health and companionship, everyone’s life is unique. No two people experience precisely the same social support, either in childhood or in adult life. Thus, while overall health trends can be assessed by examining mortality statistic in large populations, eventually that macroscopic view must be complemented by an examination of the unique social experiences of the individual. In order to bridge this gap and examine how human relationships affect the healthy status of individual people, we must focus on the individual through his unique life experiences. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 7

Everything is More Mysterious than We Can Imagine

Ultimately, everything is more mysterious than we can imagine. The need for philosophy arises from the apparently irreconcilable opposition between different elements in our spiritual life—between subject and object, religion and science, freedom and determination, reason and desire. Unless we reconcile these antagonisms in a higher unity, we cannot achieve the spiritual harmony without the highest achievements of humankind are possible. While none of us can escape our limited mental maps of the World, we can sample from other cultures and subcultures and discover new ways of looking at things. To teach the material of knowledge, one is given a sense of perception and the mind then goes to work on it, ordering by concept supplied by itself. There are no objects until thought has done its work. Thought enters into the very constitution of experience. And further, the process of knowing is dominated by an idea of Reason, which drives the mind to seek a form of experience in which all differences are seen as elements in a single system. We can, in a sense, begin to triangulate the truth.  #RandolphHarris 1 of 6

Activity confines us to appearances and bars us from things-in-themselves. Our knowledge of objects will be imperfect insofar as we fail to recognize that they are only partial aspects of the ideal whole toward which reason points. We can refine our necessarily aggressive preconceptions (as what we learn morphs into habit), but until we are part of eternal life, we will not learn everything. Until then there remain vast areas of knowledge—of ideas, people, and places—where our mental models are not fully informed. Yet we can be bighearted and acknowledge these gaps. We can work, persistently, to seek out the contradictions our minds naturally work to eliminate. When we can establish the power of human beings to determine their conduct by reference to the self, as a permanent center, as distinct from its relatively isolated and transient desires, we become inspired and eradicate contradictions. Healing beings in a wound, an imperfection—a wound inherent in the nature of life itself—and is an attempt either to learn to live with the wound or to heal it. A self-conscience being seeks self-satisfaction, not just the satisfaction of this or that desire. And in this power of determining conduct by reference to the self lies human freedom.  #RandolphHarris 2 of 6

Many people have been in situations that they have tried to help another person, but that other person never does anything in return, never gives back to the relationship, but constantly needs you. And no matter how many times you forgive him or her, you are reminded of what they did to hurt you and how much of it was intentional and you get upset. Although you may love an individual, life is about self-preservation and if someone is not helping you in return, you have to save yourself. No one wants to live in a state of conflict habitual. Studies have shown that a high need for closure hurts healing. Cultivating ambiguity helps us keep an open mind and empathize with different viewpoints. When we assemble, we can take the uncertainties in our lives and create something out of them. The most obvious and visible effect of letting go of negative feelings is a resumption of emotional and psychological growth and the solving of problems, which often have been long-standing. There is pleasure and satisfaction as we begin to experience the powerful effects of eliminating the blocks to achievement and satisfaction in life.  #RandolphHarris 3 of 6

We soon discover that the limiting thoughts and negative beliefs, which we have naively held to be true, were all merely the result of accumulated negative feelings. When the feelings are let go, them the thought pattern changes from feeling constricted to feeling a sense of freedom and being happy. Entire areas of life can open up. What used to be awkward or unexpressed can become effortless and joyously alive. Surrender at great depth is complete when a person has let go of needing or wanting a physical healing to occur. A state of peace about the situation is reached when all three aspects of illness—physical, mental, and spiritual—have been addressed and the final outcome or wished-for recovery has been surrendered. Peace comes with total inner surrender to what is clearly the known method or program that is usually followed. Repressed and suppressed feelings require counter energy to keep them submerged. It takes energy to hold down our feelings. As these feelings are relinquished, the negativity is now freed for constructive use. #RandolphHarris 4 of 6

Because we let go, there is an increase in available energy for creativity, growth, work and interpersonal relationships. The quality and enjoyment of these new activities increases. Most people are too exhausted to bring a really high quality into their experiences unless the negative programs opposing them have been resolved. Take a guess as to how much you have changed over the last ten years on a scale from 1 to 10. Now, on the same scale, estimate how much you will change over the next decades. How do your two ratings compare? Do you assess your past changes differently from how you predict your future ones? Most people do. Vulnerability can be a risk, especially emotionally, but not doing what we can to access it is a bigger risk. Turning toward our pain is an enormously important step in our personal evolution. It does not matter how small the step is, so long as we take it, and keep taking it. Because we are conditioned to turn away from or avoid our pain, turning toward it may feel counterintuitive, at least at first.  #RandolphHarris 5 of 6

About 50 percent of all patients hospitalized for heart disease show moderate to severe depression, with the most severe depression usually accompanying the more serious disease. It has been estimated that up to 33 percent of all patients who have had a heart attack fail to return to work not because of physical problems but because of psychological problems. This failure to return to work will itself often lead to increased social isolation, loneliness, and depression—all of which are quite certain to affect the heart adversely. The problems cause by this new type of loneliness may ultimately be lethal. Love and affection are major influences on the human heart. To end your suffering, enter your pain. This means getting to know it and its roots, exploring it deeply, moving through it slowly but surely. You cannot emerge from your pain unless you enter it, and this begins with turning toward it. For me, my pain came from being alone, but I realized maybe being alone was the best thing for me because being there for someone who only uses one and is never there, is basically a painful form of being alone. Each of our emotions is worth getting to know very, very well—its nature, its purpose, its expression, its containment, its value, one’s history with it, one’s use and misuse of it. #RandolphHarris 6 of 6

Two Versions of Evolution

There is a temper of mind which borrows a degree of virtue even from self-love. All freedom can do is to illuminate the possibilities that can be opened to us and toward which we can steer ourselves by making our choices real. To regard God as merely a spirit is tantamount to atheism. The grand design of the cosmos points to the existence of some vaster Person who looms out behind our God, and who stands in the same relation to him as he to us. And yet another, and another, and another. This pyramiding of deities is one of many items with enlivening the Victorian scene. All things on Earth have their price; and for truth we pay the dearest. We barter it for love and sympathy. The road to honor is paved with thorns; but the path to truth, at every step you set your foot down on your own heart. It is the first policy in a time of difficulty or danger always to know the worst—never to hide the truth from yourself—never to persuade yourself that the evil is unreal, and that things are better than they are. There is nothing so dangerous as a question which comes by surprise on a person whose business it is to conceal truth or to defend falsehood. It is impossible to study the human frame without a little studying the human mind. As we have seen, those aspects of the mind that were programmed by the evolution for purposes of survival are especially ripe for exploitation by the various forms and mechanisms of unreality that we have identified. For instance, the TV takes advantage of the brain’s special attentiveness to recent events and particularly those which filter the visual span of the viewer with speed or heightened color. We are programmed by evolution to unreality’s special fondness for hyper activeness. However, the brain’s receptiveness to fast moving stimuli is not sufficient in itself to account for America’s special preoccupation with unreality. More than the workings of the brain alone are needed to account for the intensity with which Americans pursue unreality with a fever that approaches a national crusade. And indeed, to inveigh the phrase national crusade already implies that another part of the answer is to be found in American culture.

Hyperactivity is not only a deeply ingrained feature of American culture by virtue of the special fortitude of those who journeyed to the new land in order to settle it—it was a dire necessity for survival—but, as a result, it has become linked with other fundamental American values and beliefs. Americans have always believed deeply in material progress. The two words material and progress are virtually inseparable. Each implies the other in the context of the American experience. The major foundation of the belief in progress: the idea that nations (like individuals) can never stand still. They must always be growing, changing, improving their material lot: life is a race to be won by the swiftest. Like the progressive faith, itself, this notion is often left implicit. Yet its impact has been incalculable. It accounts for the relentless dynamism at the heart of capitalist development, spreading an obsessive need for change throughout modern culture. And for most educated and affluent Americans, change means progress. The old nations of the Earth creep on at a snail’s pace, and many want it to thunder past with the rush express. There is a belief that those who are rich and successful are the highest types thus far produced in the evolutionary process. Poor people are considered biological misfits; hence, the sooner they disappear and leave room for those better able to take care of themselves, the better. This Erewhon philosophy holds true that is a person has made a fortune of over $2 million, they are exempt from all taxation, and are considered a work of art and too precious to be meddled with. Society is no so much a guide for making something—it is a design or pattern that can be followed to create a place in which the government, laws, and social conditions are perfect. Thus, in Erewhon bodily illness is considered a punishable crime, whereas moral failings deserve sympathy and are given therapeutic treatment. Such progress we have learned was bought at a considerable price. To the uprooting and mass migration from farms and small country hamlets into the cities with their slums and social problems on the scales not experienced before, Americans reacted against what they experienced as the unreality of the new social order.

Removed from nature with its natural sounds, sights, and rhythms, Americans felt a sense of uneasiness. They found the new factories with their vast management hierarchies and impersonal rules the very epitome of everything that was unnatural, unreal, stultifying, and suffocating. People felt that they were in danger of becoming the very machines with which they worked and were charged with controlling. Instead of fostering machinery, the Erewhonians, after a long struggle, destroyed it when they realized the machines, like organisms, were evolving and would soon acquire a mastery over humans.  The recoil from the artificial, overcivilized qualities of modern existence has sparked a wide variety of quests for more intense experience, ranging from the fascist fascination with violence and death, to the cults of emotional spontaneity of avant-grade artists to popular therapies stressing instinctual liberation. Antimodern impulses, too, were rooted in longings to recapture an elusive real life in culture evaporating into unreality. The darkest and most contemptible ignorance is that of not knowing oneself. The history of race relations in the United States of America has so sensitized us all that the initial phase of any interracial relationship between strangers is likely to be characterized by cautious attempts by each party to discern dominant or subtle indications of the racial attitudes of the other. Some violence is created by mental and emotional disorders, for which successful treatment is sometimes available. However, society needs to create an improved climate of acceptance for these programs of help and therapy that are available. In reaction to the growing sense of unreality brought on by the difficult adjustments to the new realities of modern life, Americans of all social classes will eventually retreat and engage in a frenzy-like search for authentic experiences. Elaborate home workshops where handicraft projects will be pursed with a vengeance. They will begin to look at family, friends, and true love as something desirably and that they need throughout an individual’s lifetime. They will never forget how each day can be described by the possibilities it contains and how tomorrow shall be well. One day, after a long life, we will find each other again.

A Specific Antibiotic for a Specific Infection—How to Cure the Broken Heart?

vbnm,.The great truth, this World is well designed, and we weaken ourselves if we do not love the real World. We live in an age that reads too much to be wise, and that thinks too much to be beautiful. People are strongly inclined to worship what they do not understand. A grand secret, upon which imposers on humankind have total relied for the success of their frauds, causeless distrust is able to drive deceit into a simple person’s head. Our capacity to destroy one another is matched by our capacity to heal one another. Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well-being; language gives us the power to change ourselves and others by communicating our experiences, helping to define what we know, and finding a common sense of meaning; we have the ability to regulate our own physiology, including some of the so-called involuntary functions of the body and the brain, through such basic activities as breathing, moving, and touching; and we can change social conditions to creative environments in which children and adults can feel safe and where they can thrive.  #RyanPhillippe 1 of 9

CmWrHbhVIAAdMVsWhen we ignore these quintessential dimension of humanity, we deprive people of ways to heal from trauma and restore their autonomy. Being a patient, rather than a participant in one’s healing process, separates suffering people from their community and alienates them from an inner sense of self. Suddenly, your life turns into a horror movie nightmare. With the experience of alienation, an open life imperceptibly merges into a limited life.  Whereas there was a time when there were few if any boundaries, there is now a time when there is nothing but boundaries. Abilities go, memories decay into painful experiences; what one has worked so hard to create is labor lost. It brings limitations and liabilities, loneliness and loss. Even so, however limited and exiled in the present, one still remains the person he or she was. All of these complex problems ultimately lead to a key question that still must be addressed: What can be done to help alleviate the spread of loneliness-induced diseases in our society? We become more sensitive to the rush of time. Years accumulate with increasing rapidity. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 9

CmWrIPZUEAELKMC In contrast to physical activity, we tend to look more to mental activity for satisfaction and recognition. Even though there is occasional tiredness, life remains full, active, intact. The very complexity of the issues involved in human loneliness make it clear that no simple or single approach will successfully provide all the answers. Loneliness is ultimately an internal, subjective human experience. Therefore, in order to effectively combat its lethal influence, we must acknowledge that loneliness is an important social factor in physical disease and the implicit denial to this fact has contributed to, and perhaps even fostered, cultural attitudes that have blinded people to human relationships. Human relationships much be taken every bit as seriously as we take such physical factors as serum cholesterol levels, blood pressure, or significant loss of blood. As advisers to our society, we must make people aware that their family and social life are every bit as important to health as dieting and exercise, cars and fashion, food and technology. After all, if you knew something was wrong with your mobile device, you would replace it or repair it right away, but many ignore their human relationships until they decay and disappear. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 9

IMG_-k07quwFew physicians would deny the reality of a broken heart. However, at the same time, most feel they can do precious little to influence psychosocial factors that cause disease, or to alleviate the physical impact of divorce or bereavement. These seems so complicated and overwhelming when compared with other, more precise aspects of modern scientific medicine—a specific antibiotic for a specific infection—that many clinicians see the whole problem as unmanageable. The idea that we are asking people to go out in the World completely alone and call themselves independent is absurd. We need to teach people how to be interdependent, which means teaching them how to have relationships. Playing tragic characters, in life, you have to express emotions and create a reality that comes from a place of depth and sorrow and hurt. That is all some people know. It is life and death every day for them. Losses exceed gains. It is harder to keep life together; we can do it, but only with a greater expenditure of energy. We are fragile, perhaps disabled, and virtually done in. At best, we merely manage to exist. At worst, we simply vegetate. And the nightmare of aging turns into a trauma. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 9

xcvbnmThere are yet greater truths to tell, if we had either the courage to announce or the temper to receive them. And so, the weight of attention needs to be shifted more and more away from scientific medicine and to human contact. Many people feel like their life is a case file, and every day they are just managing their files and not really living. Everything they do is a formality to make sure they still have a place to live. One may not like most of the people they see every day, but still have to be nice. People damage your property and pretend not to know what they did, and they pretend to be your friends just to pump you for information, or make a negative statement or insult. The focused subtype reduces the range of involvement by a self-conscious selectivity and prioritizing.  Out of love to oneself, one should confine oneself to truth, for by doing otherwise, one injures the noblest part of oneself, one’s mortal soul. One must possess as much real psychic space as possible. Even if the choice is limited to wearing a pair of shorts that make you feel comfortable, a certain hair style, or a particular shirt, the right to be part of the process of your life is protected. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 9

dfghuiConcrete decisions and specific acts are what enable people to continue to experience themselves as a part of life. Through such experiences, people feel that they are sharing in the continuing flow of life. A sense of continuity requires an anticipated confidence that what one has known is a hard rind of truth which is discerned by unimaginative, unsympathetic minds. Evolution has attributed to the cause of variations to the activity of organisms and to the inherited effects of the use or disuse of their various functions. Not luck, but cunning displayed by organisms in coping with their environment lies at the basis of evolution. Hence, the activity of organisms is profoundly beneficial. We learn to live with our conditions and function as best we can.  The great mistake of Sir Charles Darwin was to dismiss teleology from the domain of living things, for they then become indistinguishable from machines. Machines are adjuncts to organisms, like extra, though inferior, limbs, by means of which organisms have become more highly evolved. Hence, a leg is only a much better wooden leg than anyone can manufacture. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 9

f4e91d2ffbd6c082cc1679717c0ed40cLiving things have come to produce their natural organs and to equip themselves with adaptive habits. The individual plant or animal must know at the start what to do. A fertilized ovum possesses the knowledge it requires to make itself into an embryo and subsequently into an adult organism. This knowledge is really a remembering of what its ancestors did in the past, Hence, we must postulate an unconscious memory (soul) at work in all living things, binding successive generations and providing the basis for the transmission of acquired characteristics. Since evolution involves a continuous process of derivation, there must be an identity between parents and offspring: the latter are not different individuals, but are the parents at a later evolutionary stage. Birth has been made too much of. A new born infant is simply part of an unbroken biological process, not an utterly separate individual. Accordingly, there is a deep unity of all life, so that it constitutes in reality, nothing but one single creature, of which the component members are but, as it were, blood corpuscles or individual cells. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 9

IMG_soqqwrSeparation of the organic from the inorganic was unwarranted. What we call the inorganic World must be regarded as up to a certain point of living, and instinct with consciousness. Hence, all space is at all times full of a stuff endowed with a mind and both stuff and mind are immaterial and imperceptible, so long as they are undisturbed, but the moment they are disturbed, the stuff becomes material and the mind perceptible. Evolution is therefore the life history of this primordial World stuff, to which no name can be so fittingly applied as God. If Truth does not speak through the people, it never speaks at all. Although interruptions in human dialogue may be very painful, at least they are clear-cut. Individual may suffer acutely when they lose a loved one, but they usually realize they are suffering, and they understand why. To engage a bereaved person in dialogue means sharing in his or her pain. What emerges from the eyes of a bereaved individual is grief, what emerges from the eyes of those recently divorced is anxiety; what emerges from the eyes of those who live alone is loneliness; what emerges from the eyes of the unloved adolescent is frightened anger. #RyanPhillippe 8 of 9

fghjThese people all need to share these painful aspects of their lives through dialogue. The dialogue of pain, anxiety, anger, and loneliness is also part of life. How convenient to label these as scientific-medical problems and therefore have others look into their eyes. In much the same way that medicine slowly abandoned its appreciation for the healing role of bedside manner, society has abandoned its appreciation for the healing capacity of human contact. Emotional support that once came from families, neighbors, friends, ministers, deacons, rabbis, and various other social service agencies. While delivering needed support to people, these professional helping groups have also tended to usurp our functions and relieve us of our sense of personal responsibility. The very fact that a person can tolerate deteriorated dialogue and sometimes even encourage it is something that we would often prefer to deny, for reflecting on the implications is not pleasant. Since dialogue must also be reciprocal, each person must share part of the responsibility. An individual can only receive to the extent that he or she gives, and, in that sense, dialogue is a mirror of one’s personality. The Devil often builds the ladder by which truth climbs up. #RyanPhillippe 9 of 9

The Way of the Flesh Verses the Doorway to the Kingdom of a Future Life

Our own hearts are our best prayer-rooms, and the chaplains who can most help us are ourselves. Nature is a product of providential design; by studying nature, one will find confirmation there for the revealed doctrines of Christianity. That light is the ray of rays, the Sun of Suns, the Moon of Moons, the Star of Stars. It is the light of Terewth. If, next to mistrusting Providence, there be aught that humans should pray against, it is against mistrusting their fellow humans. There is nothing miraculous or mysterious about the things we can explain. We control what we are able to explain; consequently, it is only natural to seek an explanation for everything. If one rules another by saying, “You must do this,” and “You will do that,” he or she breaks the human spirit, making it unfit for God. A person is simply a slave for obeying, unless behind his obedience is the recognition of a holy God. Our Lord never insists on having authority over us. No, God leaves us perfectly free to choose—so free, in fact, that we can spit in His face or we can put Him to death, as others have done; and yet He will never say a word. #RandolphHarris 1 of 6

Truth, the most powerful of all things, is the strongest friend of innocence. Once God’s life has been created in me through His redemption, I instantly recognize His right to absolute authority over me. It is a complete and effective domination. Having the reality of God’s presence is not dependent on our being in a particular circumstance or place, but is only dependent on our determination to keep the Lord before us continually. Our problems arise when we refuse to place our trust in the reality of His presence. If our everyday decisions are not according to His will, God will press through them, bringing restraint to our spirit. Then we must be quiet and wait for the direction of God’s presence. The known constitution and course of things is what is said to be the moral system of nature. A very sublime and grand thing is Truth, in its way, through like other sublime and grand things, such as thunderstorms and that, we are not always over and above glad to see it. The acknowledged dispensations of Providence is the (natural) government which we find ourselves under. Religion teaches us to believe and expect. #RandolphHarris 2 of 6

If we begin by assuming that the existence of nature implies an operating agent, then the good and bad consequences of our actions occur by His appointment. Any foresight we have of the consequences of our actions is a warning given by him on how we are to act. The satisfaction we feel at certain consequences, and the pain we suffer at others, are ordained by God and are signs that we are already under his government. Thus, a consideration of nature alone shows that we must acknowledge the place of God in our lives. Hence, if Christian doctrines really are revealed truths, our discoveries in nature have already prepared us to accept the main claims of revelation about God as a creator and judge. We must treat the detail with patience and respect. From the assumption that nature implies an operating agent, it seems clear that these arguments are not intended to appeal to religious skeptics. At best, we hope to convince deists, who already acknowledged the existence of a god, that their convictions might reasonably lead them to accept Christianity. #RandolphHarris 3 of 6

At the very least, the goal we expect to make is for deists acknowledge Christianity’s right to be treated as a subject worthy of serious discussion.  In the Bible, clouds are always associated with God. Clouds are the sorrows, sufferings, or providential circumstances, within or without our personal lives, which actually seem to contradict the sovereignty of God. Yet, it is through these very clouds that the Spirit of God is teaching us how to walk by faith. What a revelation it is to know that sorrow, bereavement, and suffering are actually the clouds that come along with God! If I can stay calm, faithful, and unconfused while in the middle of the turmoil of life, the goal of the purpose of God is being accomplished in me. God is not working toward a particular finish—His purpose is the process itself. It is the process, not the outcome, that is glorifying to God. There is a clear distinction between demonstrative reasoning and probable reasoning by pointing out the probability admits of degrees, while demonstration does not. A slight presumption in favor of a thing does not make it probably true. #RandolphHarris 4 of 6

However, the slightest possible presumption is, nonetheless, of the nature of probability, for such low presumption, often repeated, will amount even to moral certainty. Thus, a human having observed the ebb and flow of the tide today, affords some sort of presumption, though the lowest imaginable, that it may happen again tomorrow: but the observation of this even for so many days, and months and ages together, as it has been observed by human kind, gives us a full assurance that it will. While an infinite intelligence must see everything as certainly true or certainly false, for us, with our limited capacities, probability is the very guide of life. In the consideration of the acquisition and practice of moral virtues, knowledge and habit are of the greatest interest. Perceptions come into our minds readily and of course, by means of there having been there before; and this reappearance of perceptions seems a thing of the same sort as readiness in any particular kind of action, proceeding from being accustomed to it. #RandolphHarris 5 of 6

One of our habits of perception is our constant and even involuntary readiness in correcting the impressions of our sight concerning magnitude and distances, so as to substitute judgment in the room of sensation imperceptibly to ourselves. It seems as if all other associations of ideas not naturally connected might be called passive habits. (A natural connection of ideas would be, for example, flame and fire.) In this discussion of a future life, there is probability that the mind may be separable from the body. Hence, death may have no effect on the mind because the soul comes enriched with knowledge. What is worship? —to do the will of God—that is worship. And what is the will of God?—to do to my fellow humans what I would have my fellow humans do to me—that is the will of God. Do not overlook what we are really interested in: not an identity of acts of consciousness, but an identity of the object of which we are conscious—ourselves. Of this identity, we can be as certain as we are of the identity of any other thing. Anyone who asks for a greater certainty of personal identity than this wishes for something which the subject will not admit. Nothing in the newspapers is ever true and that is why they are so popular; the taste of the age being so decidedly for fiction. The way of all flesh. #RandolphHarris 6 of 6

Three Sermons on Human Nature and The Superior Principle

My own thoughts are the worst company you could leave me in at the present. We know not to what inconveniences a small departure from principle will lead. Therefore, it is important distinguish between unverified information heard or received from another and error, the former must be eradicated, but latter tolerated for humanity’s sake. We know the World only through our own ideas, and these do not give us its real nature. On the contrary, our ideas transform the nature of things into qualities which a purely subjective. Similarly, our values are our own; and such relative judgments as those involving categories of cause and effect, or whole and part, are arrived at through the constitution of our minds, not discovered embedded in rerum natura (in the nature of things in the World of nature as distinguished from the World of human beings). The things themselves, though remaining unknowable, nevertheless cause ideas to arise in our minds. The human mind projects relations into the external World and no confidence can be placed in an idea contradicted by sensation. There are two kinds of ideas, those of sensation and those of reflection.  #RandolphHarris 1 of 6

Thoughts cannot always be controlled by will. Truth, the most powerful of all things, is the strongest friend of innocence. There are also two kinds of truth—metaphysical and logical. Metaphysical truth is found in the conformity between our ideas and those in the mind of God; logical truth, in the conformity between our ideas and the things of which they are ideas. We cannot apprehend the former kind of truth; but since the latter involves knowing the unknowable, logical truth is reduced to consistency. Many do not accept the doctrine of innate ideas, that the mind is born with ideas and knowledge, and therefore the mind is not a blank slate at birth because we would be able to discover truth through introspection alone. There is a coherent system of ideas, duplicating the system of things, even though no individual possesses it. This system exemplifies God’s ideas, not all knowledge is gained from experience and the senses. However, at least certain ideas, such as those of God, infinity, and substance, must be innate because no satisfactory empirical origin of them could be conceived. The new born child has an explicit awareness of such ideas.  #RandolphHarris 2 of 6

Just as the Universe is held together by tonos (tension, intensity), pneuma (breath, spirit) and logos (reason), so the physical and metaphysical metabolism and the vital functions of each individual thing in the Universe are also regulated by tonos, penuma, and logos. All these are thus related to the cosmic pneuma and to each other, and account for the harmony in the Universe. This is breathed into things by God himself, but is not to be identified with God. If nothing else, this treatise is valuable as an example of the philosophy of nature which was accepted and learned by humans in the 17th century. Some people like to find a foundation for morals in something other than appeals to the divine will because nature and revelation are complementary. Self-love and the partisan of an instinct for benevolence are vigorous and impressive ways to analyze human nature. Do not be misled about human nature, either by judging only from one’s own natures or by giving too much weight to exceptions from the general run of others. Humans are neither exceptionally self-regarding to the exclusion of benevolence nor exceptionally benevolent to the exclusion of self-interest. #RandolphHarris 3 of 6

What is more, is that these affections of self-interest and benevolence are not necessarily incompatible and may even reinforce one another. The satisfaction of performing a benevolent action will certainly encourage acts of benevolence in some who desires the advantage of society. Nevertheless, self-love and benevolence are but two affections among many; that neither has any priority over the rest; and that neither is such that all other affections can be reduced to it. Self-love is a complex affection, in that its object is not simply the self, but rather the gain of all things pleasing to the self. There are no affections directly contradictory to self-love or benevolence, namely self-hatred and ill will towards others. Rather, when self-love or benevolence is opposed, it is by passions for particular things; and it is in the pursuit of these objects we may harm ourselves or injure others. It must be remembered that this is a description of the generality of humankind, and not exceptions. Human are something more than a bundle of affections. Human possess a faculty superior to affections, which judges both them and the actions which flow from them.  #RandolphHarris 4 of 6

Humans have a faculty of reflection, or conscience. In one’s strongest characterization of this superior principle, determinately, some actions will be in themselves just, right, good; others will be in themselves evil, wrong, unjust. Conscience without being consulted, without being advised with, magisterially exerts itself, and approves or condemns one the doer of them accordingly. It is conscience (the capacity to reflect on one’s affections) which distinguishes humans from the beasts, by rescuing people from subjection to whatever passions is uppermost at the moment. It is conscience which makes a human a moral agent, by enabling one to be a law unto oneself—a law which one is obliged to obey, because it is the law of your own nature. Conscience approves of whatever contributes to the good of the whole humankind and condemns whatever disproportionately favors some part of the whole. However, how does conscience learn to assess these matters? No question about how conscience does its job need be asked, since it has been designed by God for its appointed end. Conscience, if not forcibly stopped, naturally and always of course goes on to anticipate a higher and more effectual sentence, which shall hereafter second and affirm its own.  #RandolphHarris 5 of 6

ghbjnkml,When faced with the danger or the threat of danger, human beings can derive an enormous sense of comfort from their fellow humans. Whether the danger is artificially contrived in a laboratory or part of the infinite variety of real life stresses, human beings instinctively seek out each other’s company in adverse circumstances. The child frightened by the darkness of night reflectively cries out to its parents for reassurance and comfort. Indeed, all of us seek human and spiritual reassurances. The idea of being alone, all alone, in the face of danger terrifies children and adults alike. I believe that humans are naturally fitted for life in society, and of course, I approve of social virtues; but virtues are never reckoned to be inherently valuable, unless there is an agent that makes being virtuous more advantageous.  Christ urges us to keep our minds filled with the concept of God’s control over everything, which means that a disciple must maintain an attitude of perfect trust and an eagerness to ask and seek. Fill your mind with the thought that God is there. God is my Father. He loves me, and I will never think of anything that He will forget, so why should I worry? How much more will your Father who is in Heaven give good things to those who ask of Him! #RandolphHarris 6 of 6

On the sixth year of the 2011 Japan Earthquake, we would like to send our hearts and good thoughts to those in Japan. God bless. (11 March 2011).

Pride Must Bear Pain but Pain is Recompensed by Pride

That pride of individualism that is half the fascination of sin. The intellect directly grasps the individual, only reaching the Universal by reflection. This is does by means of the active intellect, which directed the imaginative faculty to a true understanding of the object encountered. Information obtained in psychoanalysis concludes that dreams repeat impressions of our childhood—they refer to games involving movement which have such some extraordinary attractions for children. Where is the father who has never made a child fly by running with it across the room, with outstretched arms, or has never played at falling with it by rocking it on his knee and then suddenly straightening his leg, or by lifting the child above his head and suddenly pretending to withdraw his supporting hand? At such moments children shout with joy and insatiably demand a repetition of the performance, especially if a little fright and dizziness are involved in it. In after years they repeat their sensations in dreams, but in dreams they omit the hands that held them, so that they are free to float or fall.  #RandolphHarris 1 of 8

We know that all small children have a fondness for such games as rocking and see-sawing; and when they see gymnastic performances at the circus their recollection of such games is refreshed. In some boys they hysterical attack consists simply in the reproduction of such performances, which they accomplish with great dexterity. Not infrequently sexual sensations are excited by these games of movement, innocent through they are in themselves. To express the matter in a few words: it is these romping games of childhood which are being repeated in dreams of flying, falling, vertigo, and the like, but pleasurable sensations are now transformed into anxiety. However, as every mother knows, the romping of children often ends in quarrelling tears. I have therefore good reason for rejecting the explanation that it is the condition of our cutaneous sensations during sleep, the sensation of movements of the lungs, etcetera, that evoke dreams of flying and falling. As I see it, these sensations have themselves been reproduced from the memory to which the dream refers—that they are therefore dream-content, and not dream-sources. #RandolphHarris 2 of 8

The same assumption of the reality of Universal categories is apparent in many-sided scientific activity. The intensification and remission of forms takes place by means of latitudo, or variation, in the species of the existing form (heat, cold) could not itself by modified, the subject is which it inhered (water, for example) could take on new forms of the same species which were more or less perfect. According to the degree of this variation, intensification or remission followed. This is not an isolated hypothesis. It was derived from the analogy of movement. Here, in adherence to this traditional mode of thinking, the doctrine of the impetus is rejected. The impetus is supposed to be the source of movement in that which is moving and instead it is held that in each movement, a new place (ubi), a new terminus, and a new form is engendered, each displacing the previous one. This material, consisting of sensations of motion, similar in character, and originating from the same sources, is now used for the representation of the most manifold dream-thoughts. Principles are not always the only means of rendering people capable to face every storm of life with tranquility. #RandolphHarris 3 of 8

Dreams of falling are more frequently characterized by anxiety. Their interpretation, when they occur in women, offers no difficulty, because they nearly always accept the symbolic meaning of falling, which is a circumlocution for giving way to an erotic temptation. We have not yet exhausted the infantile sources of the dream of falling; nearly all children have fallen occasionally, and then been picked up and fondled; if they fell out of bed at night, they were picked up by the nurse and taken into her bed. People who dream often, and with great enjoyment, of swimming, cleaving the ways, excreta, have usually been bed-wetters, and they now repeat in the dream a pleasure which they have long since learned to forgo. So, whenever you experience the undertow, the drag of dependency in another, examine closely who is doing what work in the relationship. Whenever you find you are feeling too supportive or too directive or too exploitative, you may be certain you have taken over too large a share of the load. Even more, under such circumstances you are doing what you can not do: namely, express the uniqueness of another’s life experience.  #RandolphHarris 4 of 8

Each person has one’s own proper burden of being to bear. Dreams of passing through narrow alleys, or a whole suite of rooms; dreams of burglars, in respect of whom nervous people take measures of precaution before going to bed; dreams of being chased by wild animals (bulls, horses); or of being threatened with knives, daggers, and lances—the last two themes are characteristic of the manifest dream content of persons suffering from anxiety, excreta. Because of the exaggerated intensity of the dependent responses, we may find ourselves provoked into reacting in certain ways. We feel an obligation to care about the other. We know the demand to dominate the other. We sense the pressure to exploit the other. We find ourselves trapped in a box of logical illogicalness. The harder the ball of behavior is thrown at us and the closer to the edge of the circle of responses it originates, the more difficult to stop or deflect it. The dependent person narrows his or her actions in such an aggressive way that the World around is trained to take over. Remember principle: no expediency, no compromise. #RandolphHarris 5 of 8

Dissonance can come from different conflict. Living in two place, being part of two cultures, and social alienation are just some possible sources. This alienation is often reflected in another, more ordinary estrangement, the social displacement which occurs. In the unlucky, social displacement leads to maladjustment and to art that whimpers or snarls. In the lucky, it leads to a healthy doubling of vision, the healthy alternative to disorientation and emotional insecurity, the anxiety and ambivalence of the neurotic. Since it does not matter to you it will be done this way. In other words, we respond from a position of strength that frees the other without dominating or destroying the other. The attitude tends toward the matter-of-fact: This is it—do you what you want, I cannot change the way things are. However, the right way to sidestep the hanging-on parasite and to right the balance is to encourage: I am not certain about this, what ideas do you have that we might try? Come on, put your mind to work; you have got good idea when you give yourself a chance; what kind of things come to mind. #RandolphHarris 6 of 8

When we respond from a position of strong support that inspires the other without belittling or browbeating him or her, the attitude tends to produce active friendliness, reaching out without taking over, close without smothering. The corresponding and complementary responses are maintained but without their exaggerations. One is friendly and supportive appropriately. True intercession involves bringing the person, or circumstance that seems to be crashing in on you, before God until you are changed by God’s attitude toward that person or circumstance. People describe intercession by saying it is putting yourself in someone else’ place. That is not true! Intercession is putting yourself in God’s place; it is having God’s mind and God’s perspective. Our attitude must be one of complete reliance on God. Once we get to that point, there is nothing easier than living the life of a saint. We encounter difficulties when we try to usurp the authority of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps no surer test of high principles, as it is certain no more accurate test of high breeding can be found, than a distaste for injurious gossip. #RandolphHarris 7 of 8

Any problem that comes while I obey God increases my delight, because I know that my Father knows and cars, and I can watch and anticipate how God will unravel my problems. We seek to pull behavior patterns away from the lopsided outer ring of the behavioral circle and to move them closer toward the functioning center. We find, in the end, that all of us have times when we need and want to be close and taken care of by others. We appeal to love from others. We all have times when we need and want to be left alone and not bothered by others. We appeal to freedom for ourselves. We all have times when we need and want to be critical and skeptical about what is going on. We appeal to proper anger against what is happening. Such balancing fosters more fully functioning persons. If you cannot express yourself well on each of your beliefs, work and study until you can. Try to state to yourself what you believe to be and the absolute truth of God, and you will be allowing God the opportunity to pass it on through you to someone else. Always make it a practice to stir your own mind thoroughly to think through what you have easily believed. Peace I leave you with, my peace I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled. #RandolphHarris 8 of 8
