Life is Teaching Us All the Time—Happiness Depends on Our Understanding of Life and Understanding Depends Upon the Penetration of Insight!

ImageMy song was the only sad note in Heaven, and yet the sadness was transfigured immediately into harmony, into a form of psalm or canticle, into hymn of praise and wonder and gratitude. Sensitive souls have reacted with shock to the elemental drama of life on this planet. We raise our heads over the face of the Earth, smiling into the Sun, and declare life is good. Once we realize that we need prosperity, we also realize that anything that works against continued prosperity is bad. Disease defeats the joys of prosperity while one is alive, and death cuts prosperity off coldly. Beings transcend death not only by continuing to feed their appetites, but especially by finding a meaning for one’s life, some kind of larger scheme into which one fits: one may believe one ha fulfilled God’s purpose, or done one’s duty to one’s ancestors or family, or achieved something which has enriched humankind. This is how beings assure the expansive meaning of one’s life in the face of real limitations of the body; the immortal self can take very spiritual forms, and spirituality is not a simple reflex of hunger and fear. It is an expression of the will to live, the burning desire of the creature to count, to make a difference on the planet because one has lived, has emerged on it, and has worked, suffered, and transcended. #RandolphHarris 1 of 16

ImageIf not for ourselves, then at least in the larder scheme of things, we want to know that our lives have somehow mattered, that is has left a trace, a trace that has meaning. And in order for anything once alive to have meaning, its effects must remain alive in eternity in some way. Culture itself is sacred, since it is the religion that assures in some way the perpetuation of its members. As soon as you have symbols you have artificial self-transcendence via culture. Culture is in this sense supernatural, and all systematizations of culture have in the end the same goal: to raise beings above nature, to assure them that in some ways their lives count in the Universe more than merely physical things count. If we seek to avoid evil and assure our eternal prosperity, we are living a fantasy for which there is no scientific evidence so far. Id the fantasy is a harmless one, that would be all right. Since beings must now hold for dear life onto the self-transcending meanings of society in which they live, onto the immortality symbols which guarantee them indefinite duration of some kind, a new kind of instability and anxiety are created. And this anxiety is precisely what spills over into the affairs of beings. #RandolphHarris 2 of 16

ImageAt the gateway that leads from the Middle Ages into the modern World stands Science (which later became the spirit of the Enlightenment), Protestantism, and Capitalism. At first glance, the Spirit of Protestantism would seem to have very little to do with the of the New Science, since in matters religious Protestantism placed all the weight of its emphasis upon the irrational datum of faith, as against the imposing rational structures of medieval theology, and there is Luther’s famous curse upon “the whore, Reason.” In secular matters, however—and particularly in its relation toward nature—Protestantism fitted in very well with the New Science. By stripping away the wealth of images and symbols from medieval Christianity, Protestantism unveiled nature as a realm of objects hostile to the spirit and to be conquered by puritan zeal and industry. Thus Protestantism, like science, helped carry forward that immense project of modern beings: the despiritualization of nature, the emptying of it all the symbolic images projected upon it by the human psyche. With Protestantism beings that long modern struggle, which reaches its culmination in the twentieth century, to strip humans naked. To be sure, in all of the aim was progress, and Protestantism did succeed in raising the religious consciousness to a higher level of individual sincerity, soul searching, and strenuous inwardness. #RandolphHarris 3 of 16

ImageThe object of ritual is to secure full life and to escape from evil. One can read anthropology for years—even the very best anthropology—without ever really understanding what beings are trying to do in society. There are so many fact, so many strange customs, and the give a picture so complex and overflowing that there does not seem to be a center anywhere, and so we cannot get any conceptual grip on the phenomenon. However, the Universal human ambition is the achievement of prosperity—the good life. To satisfy this craving, only beings could create that most powerful concept which has mad them heroic and brought them utter tragedy—the invention and practice of ritual, which is first and foremost a technique for promoting the good life and averting evil. Let us not rush over these words: ritual is a technique for giving life. The thing is momentous: throughout vast ages of prehistory of humankind imagined that it could control life! We scoff at the idea because we do not believe life can be controlled by charms, spells, and magic. However, just that we do not believe in the efficacy of the technique is no reason for overlooking the momentous place that ritual has had in the life of humankind.  #RandolphHarris 4 of 16

ImageHuman beings were impoverished in order to come face to face with their God and the severe and inexplicable demands of their faith; but in the process they were stripped of all the mediating rites and strict and rigid doctrines that could make this confrontation less dangerous to their psychic balance. The fact is that primitive beings imagined they could transfer life from one thing to another, that one could, for example, take the spirit-power that resided in the scalp of an enemy and, by proper dancing and chanties, transfer that life from its former owner to the new one. Or, in the famous totemic increase ceremonies of the Australian aborigines, primitive beings imagined that by going through the motions of imitating animal birther that could increase the number of kangaroos, emus, grubs in the World. The technique was so precise that the aborigine could even prescribe the color of the kangaroos—brown, say, rather than gray. Or again, the aim of the technique could be general and vast, and make the renovation of the whole Universe, the Sun, and all the Earth. Or finally, ritual could generate not only bears or yams, or the life of the whole Universe, but the individual soul as well. This is the meaning of the rites of passage rituals which took place at birth puberty, marriage, and death: by means of symbolically dying and being reborn via ritual the individual was elevated to new states of being. #RandolphHarris 5 of 16

ImageLife was not a curve as we see it, where birth is zero and death a return from zero. For primitive beings birth was zero, but very often death was considered the final promotion of the soul to a state of superhuman power and indefinite durability. Protestantism achieved a heightening of the religious consciousness, but at the same time served this consciousness from the deep unconscious life of our total human nature. In this respect, its historical thrust runs parallel to that of the New Science and capitalism, since science was making the mythical and symbolic picture of nature disappear before the success of its own rational explanations, and capitalism was opening up the whole World as a field of operations for rationally planned enterprise. Faith, for Protestantism, is nevertheless the irrational and numinous center of religion; Luther was saturated with the feeling of St. Paul that beings for themselves can do noting and only God working in us can bring salvation. Here the inflation of human consciousness is radically denied, and the conscious mind is recognized as the mere instrument and plaything of a much greater unconscious force. Faith is an abyss that engulfs the rational nature of beings. #RandolphHarris 6 of 16

Image The Protestant doctrine of original sin is in all its severity a kind of compensatory recognition of those depths below the level of consciousness where the earnest soul demand to interrogate itself—expect that those depths are cast into the outer darkness of depravity. So long as faith retained its intensity, however, the irrational elements of human nature were accorded recognition and a central place in the total human economy. However, as the modern World moves onward, it becomes more and more secularized in every department of life; faith consequently becomes attenuated, and Protestant beings begins to look more and more like a gaunt skeleton, a sculpture by Giacometti. A secular civilization leaves one more starkly naked then the iconoclasm of the Reformation has ever dreamed. The more severely one struggles to hold on to the primal face-to-face relation with God, the more tenuous this becomes, until in the end the relation to God Himself threatens to become a relation to Nothingness. In the middle of the nineteenth century, was the reckoning point of the whole Protestant Reformation that began three centuries earlier: faith is seen as the uncompromising and desperate wager it is, if one takes it in all its Protestant strictness; and one cannot say, “Stupefy yourself, take holy water, receive the sacraments, and in the end all shall be well”—for Protestant beings have forsworn the sacraments and natural symbols of the soul as the snares and pomp of the devil.  #RandolphHarris 7 of 16

ImageOur contemporaries are so excused or merely passed over as the personal outpourings of a very melancholy temperament; yet they are the truthful record of what the Protestant soul must experience on the brink of the great Void. Protestant beings are the beginning of the New World’s fateful encounters with Nothingness—an encounter that was long overdue and is perhaps only now in the twenty first century reaching its culmination. Life could not continue without throwing the past into the past, liberating the present from its burden. Without this power life would be without a future; it would be enslaved by the past. Nothing new could happen; and even the old could not be, for what is now old was once something new, that might or might not have come into existence. Life, without pushing the past into the past, would be altogether impossible. However, life has this power, as we are able to observe in the growth of every plant and every animal. The earlier stages in the development of a living being are left behind in order to provide space for the future, for a new life. However, not everything of the past is pushed into the past; something of the past remains alive in the present, so that there is ground from which to grow into the future. Every growth displays its conquered past, sometimes in the form of scars. #RandolphHarris 8 of 16

ImageLife uses its past and battles against it at the same time, in order to thrust forward towards its own renewal. In this pattern, beings are untied with all beings. It is the universal character of life, whether living beings are aware of it or not. Only humans can be fully aware of it. One saves the past by remembering it, and one pushed it back by forgetting it. This is the way that every child grows, both physically and in spirit. One preserves and one leaves behind. One remembers and one forgets. In healthy development, the balance between the two enables one to advance towards the new. However, if too much is preserved, and too little forgotten, the way is barred: the past, with its infantile forces and memories, overpowers the future. We know that some of this occurs in the recesses of the inner life of all of us. We discover remnants of infancy that were never pushed into the past, where they belong. They constrict our freedom and narrow our path into the future. They may even produce a distortion of growth. Think of the preservation of infantile habits in our action and language: our adolescent with withdrawal and aggression; the early images of ourselves and our World, far removed from reality; unfounded anxieties and foolish desires; a yet unshaken dependence on childhood authorities—father or mother; and our unquestioned prejudices that have no connection with our present stage of growth. #RandolphHarris 9 of 16

ImageThere were occasions in the past when we lacked the strength to leave behind what belonged to the past; we forgot what belonged to oblivion. We forgot to forget, and now we may find it too late. There have been nations that were unable to throw anything of their heritage into the past, and thus cut themselves off from new growth, until the weight of their past crushed their present and brought them to extinction. And sometimes we might ask if the Christian church, as well as foreign religions, have not carried with it too much of its past, and left behind too little. Forgetting is probably more difficult for a religious tradition than any other human heritage. However, God is not only the beginning from which we came He is also the end to which we go. God is the creator of the new as well as the ancient of days. To all creatures God has given presence; and presence, although it rests on the past, drives into the future. Therefore, all life has received the gift of forgetting. A church that does not accept this gift denies its own creatureliness, and falls into the temptation of every church, which is to make itself God. Of course, no church or nation or person should ever forget its own identity. We are not asked to forget our name, the symbol of our inner self. And certainly, no church is required to forget its foundation. However, if it is unable to leave behind much of what was built on this foundation, it will lose its future. #RandolphHarris 10 of 16

ImageHowever, all life, including beings, not only leaves behind. It also preserves. It not only forgets. It also remembers. And the inability to remember is just as destructive as the inability to forget. An aged tree demonstrates that the live forces of its original seed that determined its final form still exists. An animal would perish if it forgot the adjustments to life it learned from its first hour. The same is true of the human infant; and it is true of all one’s later growth in body and mind. Remembrance of the past preserves the identity of a human being with oneself. Without it, one oneself would be left behind by oneself. This applies equally to all social groups. A formless rushing ahead, indiscriminate severing of the roots of the past, results in emptiness, a lack of presence, and thus, also, a lack of future. There are churches that, in their desire to forget, have lost the memory of their origins. There are nations that have cut themselves off from their traditions. Perhaps one of the most conspicuous examples is our own nation, which has used a whole ocean as the drug of forgetfulness with respects to the sources of the civilization to which it belongs—Jerusalem and Athens. I do not speak of the scholarly knowledge of the past, of which there is no lack, but rather of the pushing forward of this nation into a future in which the creative forces of the past no longer exist. #RandolphHarris 11 of 16

ImageMore than any other, our nation possesses the great power of forgetting. However, this power is not balanced equally with the power of remembering, a fact that might become our undoing, spiritually and even politically. For if we lose our identity, we are lost. Detached knowledge brings detached action. A drug addict can be stopped from using drugs, but one remains an addict. An abuser can be removed from society, medicated, or educated; but one’s attitude will remain the same. A depressive can be adjusted, but one’s depths will remain tormented. Unless therapy can reach clients experientially, it cannot promote holistic change. It can promote behavioral and intellectual change, to be sure; but it cannot awaken clients to the affect, sensations, and intentions that underlie that change and that will urge it persistently forward. We are entirely our bodies, and nothing else; and soul is only a word for something about the body. The body is a great reason, a plurality with one sense, a way and a peace, a herd and a shepherd. An instrument of your body is also your little reason, which we call spirit—a little instrument and toy of our great reason. What the sense feels, what the spirit knows, never has its end in itself. However, sense and spirit would persuade one that they are the end of all things: that is how vain most are. #RandolphHarris 12 of 16

ImageInstruments and toys are sense and spirit: behind them still lies the self. The self also seeks with the eyes of the senses; it also listens with the ears of the spirit. Always the self listens and seeks: it compares, overpowers, conquers, destroys. It controls, and it is in control of the ego too. Behind your thoughts and feelings, there stands a mighty ruler, an unknown sage—whose name is self. In your body one dwells; one is your body. There is more reason in your body than in your best wisdom. And who knows why your body needs precisely your best wisdom? Your self laughs at your ego and at its bold leaps. “What are these leaps and flights of thought to me?” it says to itself. “A detour to my end. I am the leading strings of the ego and the prompter of its concepts.” The self says to the ego, “Feel pain here!” Then the ego suffers and thinks how it might suffer no more—and that is why it is made to think. The self says to the ego, “Feel pleasure here!” Then the ego is pleased and thinks how it might often be pleased again—and that is why it is made to think. I want to speak to the despisers of the body. It is their respect that begets their contempt. What is it that created respect and contempt and worth and will? The creative self created respect and contempt; it created pleasure and pain. The creative body created the spirit as a hand for its will. #RandolphHarris 13 of 16

ImageEven in your folly and contempt, you despisers of body, you serve your self. I say unto you: your self itself wants to die and turns away from life. It is no longer capable of what it would do above all else: to create beyond itself. That is what it would do above all else, that is its fervent wish. However, now it is too late for it to do this: so your self wants to go under, O despisers of the body. Your self wants to go under, and that is why you have become despisers of the body! For you are no longer able to create beyond yourselves. And that is why you are angry with life and the Earth. An unconscious envy speaks out of the squint-eyed glance of your contempt. I shall not go your way, O despisers of the body! You are no bridge to the Overself. It is unfortunate and regrettable, but all history bears out the fact that among religious believers and mystical followers, organizations sooner or later leads to exploitation. It is more likely to happen, of course, after the prophet, teacher, guru has passed away, but in a number of recent cases it was by no means absent even during one’s lifetime. There is no hint in Jesus’ words that he wanted beings to form themselves into an organized religion, to appoint a hierarchy, to create a liturgy. Was he himself not in protest against the Hebrew version of these things? #RandolphHarris 14 of 16

ImageDid Jesus not suffer from its tyranny, and in the end die by it? Why should he want to set up a new institution, which would inevitably end in the same way? As a spiritual organization grows in numbers, it grows also in the potentialities of internal dissension. The history of most organizations confirms this. The service of an organization or a group association is that it may be able to point out the way to those who are just starting to travel the path. This disservice begins when it seeks to keep its own power over one and misguides one and misinterprets the truth under the sway of such selfish infatuation. The struggle between a high original purpose and low personal ambition goes on within the organization. Any organized sect which claims a monopoly on salvation, by that very act disproves its claim. For in the end we are saved by Grace alone, which comes from or through the Overself within us, whereas the sect is a humanmade thing outside us.  It is not necessary for those who follow philosophy to enroll members or hold group meetings. They need collect no dues and seek no converts. Once this stage is attained, neither the knowledge of reality nor the feeling of serenity will ever leave one again. One has found them not for a few hours but forever. Therefore the being who perceives this naturally, perceives the ultimate reality everywhere. One does not need to meditate or to go into a trance to find it. #RandolphHarris 15 of 16

ImageOne’s whole nature has come completely to rest in the Overself. The disciple is aware of the Overself at some times but not at other times. The adept, however, always has this awareness in an unbroken flow. Inner strength, divine joy, deep understanding, and unspeakable tranquility will pervade one always and not be limited to the hours of solitary mediation. This is so because the Overself whence these things come is always with all beings. Only, they know it not, whereas one has awakened to its abiding presence. At this stage one’s mind never loses its magnificent poise but remains always fixed on its own deepest level. When this has been fully achieved without fluctuations or breaks, when the mind is always established in this lofty state, it is characterized by a beautiful peace. One sits, poised in this great Mind. Because there is something of God in me as the Overself, Godlike qualities and capacities are in me. I am essentially wise, powerful, loving; but to the extent that I identify myself with the little ego, I obscure these grand qualities. I have the power to work creatively on my environment as well as on the body in which I am housed, just as the World-mind, the Creative Spirit, works on the Universe. “Know ye not that ye are in the hands of God? Know ye not that he hath all power, and at his great command the Earth shall be rolled together as a scroll? Therefore, repent ye, and humble yourselves before him,” reports Mormon 5.23-24. #RandolphHarris 16 of 16Image

The Rhythmic Life Alternates and Reacts, it Brings Alternation of the Alternations and Reactions against the Reactions

ImageIf I never lay eyes on you again after tonight, if I never come across a single shred of evidence that you really exist or were here with me, or that any of these things were said, I will still be transformed by you as I am not. You are my miracle of sorts. You are greater proof than millions of mortals have ever been given. You are proof not only of the supernatural and the mysterious and the wondrous, you are proof of exactly what I believe! The central fact of modern history in the West—by which we mean the long period from the end of the Middle Ages to the present—is unquestionably the decline of religion. No doubt, the churches are still very powerful organizations; there are millions of churchgoers all over the World; and even the purely intellectual possibilities of religious belief look better to church people now than in the bleak days of self-confident nineteenth-century materialism. A few years ago there was even considerable talk about a religious revival, and some popular and patriotic periodicals such as Life magazine gave a great deal of space to it; but the talk has by now pretty much died down, the movement, if any, subsided, and the American public buys more automobiles and television sets than every before. #RandolphHarris 1 of 18

ImageWhen Life magazine promotes a revival of religion, one is only too painfully aware from the nature of this publication that religion is considered as being in the national interest; one could scarcely have a clearer indication of the broader historical fact that in the modern World the nation-state, a thoroughly secular institution, outranks any church. The decline of religion in modern times means simply that religion is no longer the uncontested center and ruler of being’s life, and that the church is no longer the final and unquestioned home and asylum of one’s being. The deeper significance of this change does not even appear principally at the purely intellectual level, in loss of belief, though this loss due to the critical inroads of science has been a major historical cause of the decline. The waning of religion is a much more concrete and complex fact than a mere change in conscious outlook; it penetrates the deepest strata of being’s total psychic life. It is indeed one of the major stages in being’s psychic evolution. Religion to medieval beings was not so much a theological system as a solid psychological matrix surrounding the individual’s life from birth to death, sanctifying and enclosing all its ordinary and extraordinary occasions in sacrament and ritual. #RandolphHarris 2 of 18

ImageThe loss of the church was the loss of a whole system of symbols, images, dogmas, and rites which has the psychological validity of immediate experience, and within which hitherto the whole psychic life of Western beings have been safely contained. In losing religion, beings lost the concrete connection with a transcendent realm of being; one was set free to deal with this World in all its brute objectivity. However, one was bound to feel homeless in such a World, which no longer answered the needs of one’s spirit. A home is the accepted framework which habitually contains our life. To lose one’s psychic container is to be cast adrift, to become a wanderer upon the face of the Earth. Henceforth, in seeking one’s own human completeness beings would have to do for oneself what one once had done for one, unconsciously, by the church, through the medium of its sacramental life. Naturally enough, being’s feeling of homelessness did not makes itself felt for some time; the Renaissance being was still enthralled by a new and powerful vision of mastery over the whole Earth. No believer, no matter how sincere, could possibly write the Divine Comedy today, even is one possessed a talent equal to Dante’s. #RandolphHarris 3 of 18

ImageVisions and symbols do not have the immediate and overwhelming reality for us that they had for the medieval poet. In the Divine Comedy the whole of nature is merely a canvas upon which the religious symbol and image are painted. Western beings have spent more six hundred years—over half a millennium—in stripping nature of these projections and turning it into a realm of neutral objects which one’s science may control. Thus it could hardly be expected that the religious image would have the same fore for us as it did for Dante. This is simply a psychic fact within human history; psychic facts have just as much historical validity as the facts that we now, unlike the beings of Dante’s time, travel in airplanes and work in factories regulated by computing machines. A great work of art can never be repeated—the history of art shows us time and again that literal imitation leads to pastiche—because it springs from the human soul, which evolves like everything else in nature. This point must be insisted upon, contrary to the view of some of our more enthusiastic medievalist who picture the psychic containment of medieval beings as a situation of human completeness to which we must return. #RandolphHarris 4 of 18

ImageHistory has never allowed beings to return to the past in any total sense. And our psychological problems cannot be solved by a regression to a past state in which they had not yet been brought into being. On the other hand, when beings fail to recognize that every major step forward by beings of the past and present entails some loss, the sacrifice of an older security and the creation and heightening of new tensions, enlightened and progressive thinkers are equally blind. (We should bear this in mind against some of the criticism of Existentialism as a philosophy that has unbearably heightened human tensions: it did not create those tensions, which were already at work in the soul of modern beings, but simply sought to give them philosophic expression, rather than evading them by pretending they were not there.) It is far from true that the passage from the Middle Ages to modern times is the substitutional of a rational for a religious outlook; on the contrary, the whole of medieval philosophy is one of unbounded rationalism in comparison with modern thought. Certainly, the Whole natural World, and particularly this natural Would as it opens toward God as First Cause should be transparently assessible to human reason. However, it is also possible that the limits of human reason have very radically shrunk. #RandolphHarris 5 of 18

ImageHuman reason, in some cases, has been applied like an acid solvent to all things human and divine. The rationalism of the medieval philosopher was contacted by the mysteries of faith and strict and rigid doctrines, which were altogether beyond the grasp of human reason, but were nevertheless powerfully real and meaningful to beings as symbols that kept the vital circuit open between reason and emotion, between the rational and non-rational in the human psyche. Hence, this rationalism of the medieval philosophers does not end with the attenuated, bleak, or grim picture of beings we find in the modern rationalists. Here, once again, the condition under which the philosopher creates one’s philosophy, like that under which the poet creates one’s poetry, has to do with deeper levels of one’s being—deeper than the merely conscious level of having or not having a rational point of view. We could not expect to produce a St. Thomas Aquinas, any more than a Dante, today. The total psychic condition of beings—of which after all thinking is one of the manifestations—has evolved too radically. Which may be why present-day Thomists have on the whole remained singularly unconvincing to their contemporaries. #RandolphHarris 6 of 18

ImageThe true deathlessness must be a changeless one. Consequently it must be an eventless one. However, this does not necessarily mean a boring one. For if we realize our higher individuality, we shall be able to hold consciously and unaffected such an immortal life within our hearts whilst entering into relations with a changeful World process without them. And this will be true whether the World be on our present physical level of perception or not, whether in the flesh or out of it. One who has reached this degree will be always poised in the Overself, always aware of one’s identity with its inimitable nature yet also conscious of one’s limitations as an ego. This may seem queer and contradictory yet the being will never feel oneself pulled in different directions but, on the contrary, will feel a perfect harmony between the human and the divine. When all else is but a heap of ashes, this, once established, will remain. Insight always remains with its possessor whereas intuition only comes and goes. Insight deals solely with the Real whereas intuition deal with the phenomenal. Amid all this variegated World-activity, the Real remains unchanged and unchangeable just as the dream-World which is emanated from the mind of a dreamer leaves one’s mind unaffected and unaltered. It never changes. Hence the first characteristic of insight—that faculty in beings which can perceive this reality—is likewise that it never changes. #RandolphHarris 7 of 18

ImageWhile still continuing to feel the presence and enjoy the peace of the Infinite, one attends to ordinary everyday affairs. However, it is inevitable that the attention demanded by the later forces some reduction in awareness of the former. One’s work in the World, one’s life in the home, and even one’s pleasures in society will not at any moment stray outside one’s divinized consciousness but will always be held within it. One will remain in relation with the mystical part of one, the part that is forever alone. What I say here appears perhaps to many an obscure and foolish saying, since they even boast of never having been in dread. However, doubtless one should not be in dread of being, of finite things, but only the being who has gone through the dread of possibility is educated to have no dread—not because one avoids the dreadful things of life, but because they always are weak in comparison with those of possibility. If on the other hand the speaker means that the great things about one is that one has never been in dread, then I shall gladly initiate one into my explanation, that this comes from the fact that one is spirit-less. If the individual cheats the possibility by which one is to be educated, one never reaches faith; one’s faith remains the shrewdness of finitude, as one’s school was that of finitude. #RandolphHarris 8 of 18

ImageHowever, beings cheat possibility in every way—if they did not, one has only to stick one’s head out of the window, and one would see enough for possibility to begin its exercises forthwith. “One thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,” reports Philippians 3.13. These very personal words of Paul, which appear in one of his most personal letters, lead us to ask—what did he want to forget? What do we forget, and what so we remember? What is the function of forgetting in a being’s life and in the household of the Universe? Above all, what should we remember and what should we forget? However, in raising these questions, another more disturbing one comes to mind—what does it mean for a thing, for a being, to be forgotten? When we are forgotten, in parts of our being, or totally, for a period, or for life, what does it mean for us? What does the thought we may be forgotten in eternity do to us? When he says of the dead that “the memory of them is dead,” that they are forgotten “with their love and their hate,” and according to the psalm, that their place knows them no more, how can we endure the words of the Preacher? #RandolpHarris 9 of 18

ImageThe simple word “forget” can plunge us into the deepest riddles of life and death, of time and eternity. The Bible abounds in its use. For forgetting and remembering are two of the most astonishing qualities by which the divine image of a being is made manifest. I ask you to concentreate with me on the myster of forgetting and remembering and of being forgotten, knowing in advance how limited our words and insight and courage must be in the face of such a mystery. Let us first consider forgetting and remembering, and then being forgotten and perhaps also being remembered. The biggest deceiver in religio-mystical life is the institutional establishment, the organizational group. For here the followers have the experience of being nourished when in actuality only the social need is being nourished. Here the truth and its virtue, beauty, strength, reality, and above all its transcendence, which is totally outside ordinary Worldly experience, are imitated effectually and successfully. So the followers are satisfied and fall into complacence. The Quest is deserted and the copy which is substituted for it has the advantage of being much easier and pleasanter for all concerned. #RandolphHarris 10 of 18

ImageThe most commonplace life has events enough, no doubt, but the question is whether the possibility in the individuality is honest towards itself. It is recounted of an Indian hermit who for two years had lived upon dew, that he came once to the city, tasted wine, and then became addicted to drink. This story, like every other of the sort, can be understood in many ways, one can make it comic, one can make it tragic; but the being who is educated by possibility has more than enough to occupy one in such a story. Instantly one is absolutely identified with that unfortunate being, one knows no finite evasion by which one might escape. Now the dread of possibility holds one as its prey, until it can deliver one saved into the hands of faith. In no other place does one find repose, for every other point of rest is mere nonsense, even though in being’s eyes it is shrewdness. This is the reason why possibility is so absolutely educative. No being has ever become so unfortunate in reality that there was not some little residue left to one, and, as common sense observes quite truly, if a being is canny, one will find a way. However, one who went through the curriculum of misfortune offered by possibility lost everything, absolutely everything, in a way that no one has lost it in reality. #RandolphHarris 11 of 18

ImageIf in this situation one did not behave falsely towards possibility, if one did not attempt to talk around the dread which would save one, then one received everything back again, as in reality no one ever did even if one received everything double, for the pupil of possibility received in infinity, whereas the soul of the other expired in the finite. No one ever sank so deep in reality that one could not sink deeper, or that there might not be one or another sunk deeper than one. However, one who sank in the possibility has an eye too dizzy to see the measuring rod which, Brenda, Kelly, and Dylan hold out as a straw to the downing being; one’s ear is closed so that one is just as good as most of them. One sank absolutely, but then in turn one floated up from the depth of the abyss, lighter now than all that is oppressive and dreadful in life. Only I do not deny that one is educated by possibility is exposed—not to the danger of bad company and dissoluteness of various sorts, as are those who are educated by the finite, but—to one danger of downfall, and that is self-slaughter. If at the beginning of one’s education one misunderstands the anguish of dread, so that it does not lead one to faith but away from faith, then one is lost. #RandolphHarris 12 of 18

ImageOn the other hand, one who is educated by possibility remains with dread, does not allow oneself to be deceived by its countless counterfeits, one recalls the past precisely; then at last the attacks of dread, though they are fearful, are not such that one flees from them. For one dread becomes serviceable spirit which against its will leads one wither one would go. Then when it announces itself, when it craftily insinuates that it has invented a new instrument of torture far more terrible than anything employed before, one does not recoil, still less does one attempt to hold it off with clamor and noise, but one bids it welcome, one hails it solemnly, as Sokrates solemnly flourished the poisoned goblet, he shuts himself up wit it, he says, as a patient says to the surgeon when a painful operation is about to begin, “Now I am ready.” The dread enters into his soul and searches it thoroughly, constraining out of him all the finite and the petty, and leading him hence whither he would go. When one or another extraordinary event occurs in life, when a World-historical hero gathers heroes about one and accomplished heroic feats, when a crisis occurs and everything becomes significant, then beings wish to be in it, for these are things which educate. Quite possibly. #RandolphHarris 13 of 18

ImageHowever, there is a much simpler way of being educated much more fundamentally. Take the pupil of possibility, set one in the midst of the Jutland heath where nothing happens, where the greatest event is that a partridge flies up noisily, and one experiences everything more perfectly, more precisely, more profoundly, than the being who was applauded upon the stage of universal history, in cause one was not educated by possibility. The establishment of spiritual ashrams or communal colonies is an enterprise of which, we hope, we shall never be guilty. Such institutions usually find an enthusiastic response from persons who like to join cranky cults, indulge in endless tea-table talk, and worship leaders suffering from inflated egos. We however are working for those who have understood that it is better to worship God in solitude than in public hall or church and who believed us when we constantly repeated that institutions invariably end as the greatest obstructions to the progress of genuine spirituality. Their material expansion is usually taken as a sign of the expansion of spiritual rot. Just as the League of Nations erected magnificent million-pound buildings as its headquarters only a short while prior to its total collapse, so these institutions flourish externally at the cost of their internal life. We ask those who have faith in our teachings to keep clear of spiritual organizations, unless you are sure they are safe and righteous. #RandolphHarris 14 of 18

ImageThe words “annihilate,” “destroy,” “fight,” “tear out”—these are surely aggressive. Aggression has many more facets than is customarily recognized. In contrast to self-assertion, which may be simply a holding fast—“Here I stand; you can come this far and no farther”—aggression is a moving out, a thrust toward the person or thing seen as the adversary. Its aim is to cause a shift of power for the interests of one’s self or what one is devoted to. Aggression is the action that moves into another’s territory to accomplish a restructuring of power. This level in our spectrum occurs because of the individual’s or group’s conviction that the restructuring cannot come by self-affirmation or self-assertion. Perhaps the aggressor wants land and resources, as nations do when they annex the other’s territory in war. Or perhaps the aggressor has an intellectual stake in the change, as Mondrian did in his new art forms. Or perhaps the aggression grows out of a hated of injustice, or it has a spiritual aim, like that of the abolitionists. Whatever the aim and motive may be, and without reference at the moment to when it is justified and when it is not, aggression itself consists of the endeavor to seize some of the power, prestige, or status of the other for one’s self or for the ideas to which one is devoted. #RandolphHarris 15 of 18

ImageThe question does arise, however, as to the conditions which generate this jealousy. Are jealous reactions as they are observed in sibling rivalry and in the Oedipus complex bound to arise in every child, or are the provoked by definite conditions? Dr. Freud’s observations concerning the Oedipus complex were made on neurotic persons. In them he found that high-pitched jealousy reactions concerning one of the parents were sufficiently destructive in kind to arouse fear and likely to exert lasting disturbing influences on character formation and personal relations. Observing this phenomenon frequently in neurotic persons of our time, he assumed it to be Universal. Not only did one assume the Oedipus complex to be the vary kernel of neuroses, but also one tried to understand complex phenomena in other cultures on this basis. It is this generalization that is doubtful. Some jealousy reactions do arise easily in our culture in the relations between siblings as well as in those between parents and children, as they occur in every group living closely together. However, there is no evidence that destructive and lasting jealousy reactions—and it is these we think of when talking of the Oedipus complex or of sibling rivalry—are in our culture, not to speak of other cultures, so common as Dr. Freud assumes. They are in general human reasons but are artificially generated through the atmosphere in which a child grows up. #RandolphHarris 16 of 18

ImageSuffice it to mention the lack of warmth and the spirit of competitiveness contribute to jealousy. Besides, neurotic parents who create the kind of atmosphere we have discussed are usually discontented with their lives, have no satisfactory emotional or relationships in pleasures of the flesh and hence are inclined to make their children the objects of their attention. They lose their need for affection on the children by excessively meddling in their lives, and this can go on well into adulthood. If a parent is jealous of their child, because a child as an adult has freedom and the opportunities that the parent does not, the parent may try to profit off their child’s demise so he or she can live the type of lifestyle he or she thinks one deserves. Some parents choose to skate by in life, instead of working for what they want, and are often stuck in relationships and with material items that are nice, but they do not find satisfying. Therefore, exploiting their child for profit may be very appealing. We, however, are accustomed to believe that a hostile opposition to the family or to some member of it is unfortunate, of course, if the child had to fight against the actions of neurotic parents. If there are good reasons for opposition, however, the danger for the child’s character formation is possessed not so much in feeling or expressing a protest, but in repressing it. #RandolphHarris 17 of 18

ImageThere are several dangers arising from the repression of criticism, protest or accusations, and one is that the child is likely to take all the blame on itself and feel unworthy of love; the implications of this situation we shall discuss later on. The danger that concerns us here is that repressed hostility may create anxiety and start the development we have discussion. There are several reasons, effective in various degrees and combinations, why a child who grows up in such an atmosphere will repress hostility: helplessness, fear, love or feelings of guilt. The increase in violence and destructiveness on a national and World scale has turned the attention of professionals and the general public alike to the theoretical inquiry into the nature and causes of aggression. Such a concern is not surprising. It is due to the lack of spiritual vitality, where institutions become more important than the teaching and the Worldly strength of the human-made organization is preserved by the sacrifice of its mortal strength. However, we establish institutions to uplift beings. The institutions turn themselves by degrees of vested interests. The original purpose is then lost and a selfish purpose replaces it. The consequence is that beings are both affected and infected by this moral deterioration of the institutions. They are no longer helped to rise, nor even prevented from falling. #RandolphHarris 18 of 18Image

How Long is it Since You were Really Bothered? About Something Important, About Something Real?

EAmXu_dUEAAqkLvCans. Beer cans. Glinting on the verges of a million miles of roadways, lying in scrub, grass, dirt, leaves, sand, mud, but never hidden. Piel’s, Rheingold, Ballantine, Schaefer, Schlitz, shinning in the Sun, or picked by Moon or the beam of headlights at night; washed by rain or flattened by wheels, but never dulled, never buried, never destroyed. Here is the mark of savages, the testament of wasters, the stain of prosperity. These wise souls contemplated their past lives in a long wrathless reverie, and sought to answer prayers from below as I have said. They watched over their kindred, their clansmen, their own nations; they watched over those who attracted their attention with accomplished and spectacular displays of religiosity; they watched with sadness the suffering of humans and wished they could help and tried to help by thought when they could. However, who are these beings who defile the grassy borders of our roads and lanes, who pollute our ponds, who spoil the purity of our ocean beaches with the empty vessels of their thirst? Who are the beings who make these vessels in millions and then say, “Drink—and discard”? What society is this that can afford to cast away a million tons of metal and to make of wild and fruitful land a garbage heap? #RandolphHarris 1 of 14

ImageWhat manner of men and women need thirty feet of steel and four hundred horsepower to take them, singly, to their small destinations? Who demand that what they eat is wrapped so that forests are cut down to make the paper that is thrown away, and what they smoke and chew is sealed so that the sealers can be tossed in gutters and caught in twigs and grass? What kind of beings can afford to make the streets of their towns and cities hideous with neon at night, and their roadways hideous with signs by day, wasting beauty; who spill their trash into ravines and make smoking mountains of refuse for the town’s rats? What manner of beings choke off the life in rivers, streams and lakes with the waste of their produce making poison of water? Who is as rich as that? Slowly the wasters and despoilers are impoverishing our land, our nature, and our beauty, so that there will not be one beach, one hill, one lane, one meadow, one forest free from the debris of beings and the stigma of their improvidence. Who is so rich that ne can squander forever the wealth of Earth and water for the trivial needs of vanity or the compulsive demands of greed; or so prosperous in land that one can sacrifice nature for unnatural desires? The Earth we abuse and the living things we kill will, in the end, take their revenge; for in exploiting their presence we are diminishing our future. #RandolphHarris 2 of 14

ImageAnd when we are long dead, what will we leave behind us? Temples? Amphora? Sunken treasure? Or mountains of twisted, rusted steel, canyons of plastic containers, and a million miles of sores garlanded, not with the lovely wrack of the sea, but with the cans and bottles and light-bulbs and boxes of people who conserved their convenience at the expanse of their heritage, and whose ephemeral prosperity was built on waste. As the generations pass they grow worse. A time will come when they have grown so wicked that they will worship power; might will be right to them and reverence for the good will cease to be. At last, when no being is angry any more at wrongdoing or feels shame in the presence of the miserable, God will destroy them too. And yet even then something might be done, if only the common people would rise and put down rulers that oppress them. Loneliness can be conquered only by those who can bear solitude. We have a natural desire for solitude because we are beings. We want to feel what we are—namely, alone—not in pain and horror, but with joy and courage. #RandolphHarris 3 of 14

ImageThere are many ways in which solitude can be sought and experienced. And if it is true that religion is what a being does with one’s solitariness, each way can be called religious. One of these ways is the desire towards the silence of nature. We can speak without voice to the trees and the clouds and the waves of the sea. Without words they respond through the rustling of leaves and the moving of clouds and the murmuring of the sea. This solitude we can have, but only for a brief time. For we realize that the voice of nature cannot ultimately answer the questions in our minds. Our solitude in nature can easily become loneliness, and so we return to the World of being. Solitude can also be found in the reading of poetry, in listening to music, in looking at pictures, and in sincere thoughtfulness. We are alone, perhaps in the midst of multitudes, but we are not lonely. Solitude protects us without isolating us. However, life calls us back to its empty talk and the unavoidable demands of daily routine. It calls us back to its loneliness and the cover that it, in turn, spreads over our loneliness. Without a doubt, this last describes not only a being’s general predicament, but also, and emphatically, our time. Todays, more intensely than in preceding periods, beings are so lonely that they cannot bear solitude so they take to social media to build a fantasy life. #RandolphHarris 4 of 14

ImageThe epidemic of this fantasy life that people present on social media to cure their loneliness has become so pervasive that they even gather in groups in public to act out their roles they cast themselves in in the real World. It is as if life, for many people has become so lonely, that they feel the need to collect their fake friends and act out scenes in real life. People have become so lonely that they conjure up marriages, relationships, vacation and lifestyles all with the click of a button. Some do it for profit, others do it to make themselves feel better. However, the bottom line is they are trying to make an impression for an individual or a wide audience. People try desperately to become a part of the crowd. Everything in our World supports them. They are able to cyberstalk people, to figure out where they might be and what they might be think, and with the technology to track a cellphone or with the cameras all over the place, which are supposed to add to our security, people can then make a cameo in a person’s life and impersonate someone the individual know or act out a fantasy for a brief moment. It is a symptom of our disease that teachers and parents and the managers of public communication do everything possible to deprive us of the external conditions for solitude, the simplest assistant to privacy. #RandolphHarris 5 of 14

ImageEven our houses, instead of protecting the solitude of each member of the family or group, are constructed to exclude privacy almost completely with Alxea the virtual assistant, Roomba, and other devices spying on us, while pretending to make life easier. People can also access digital information and figure out where you go and be there waiting on you. Can you imagine how annoying that is? You wake up in the morning wonder what story is your mother going to tell you today? What scene are people in the community going to be acting out? What stupid question is someone going to ask? And who is going to become the fakest person in the World on social media, while all you are looking for is some solitude and something real, but people are all selling their souls because they want to look cool and feel special. The same holds true f the forms of communal life, the school, college, office and factory. An unceasing pressure attempts to destroy even our desire for solitude. However, sometimes God thrusts us out of the crowd into a solitude we did not desire, but which nonetheless takes hold of us. The prophet Jeremiah says—“I sit alone, because thy hand was upon me.” #RandolphHarris 6 of 14

ImageGod times lays hands upon us. He wants to ask the question of justice that many bring us suffering and death, and that can grow in us only in solitude. He wants us to break through the ordinary ways of beings that may bring disrepute and hatred upon us, a breakthrough that can happen only in solitude. God wants us to penetrate to the boundaries of our being, where the mystery of life appears, and it can only appear in moments of solitude. There may be some among you who long to become creative in some realm of life. However, you cannot become or remain creative without solitude. One hour of conscious solitude will enrich your creativity far more than hours of trying to learn the creative process. What happens in our solitude? Listen to Mark’s words about Jesus’ solitude in the desert—“And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts, and the Angels ministered to him.” He is alone, facing the whole Earth and Sky, the wild beasts around him and within him, he himself the battlefield for divine and demonic forces. So, first, this is what happens in our solitude: we meet ourselves, not as ourselves, but as the battlefield for creation and destruction, for God and the demons. Solitude is not easy. Who can bear it? It was not easy even for Jesus. #RandolphHarris 7 of 14

ImageWe read—“He went up into the hills to pray.” When evening came, he was alone.” When evening comes, loneliness becomes more lonely. We feel this when a day, or a period, or all the days of our life come to an end. Jesus went up to pray. Is this the way to transform loneliness into solitude and to bear solitude? It is not a simple question to answer. Most prayers do not have this much power. Most prayers make God a partner in a conversation; we use God to escape the only true way to solitude. Such prayers flow easily from the mouths of both ministers and laymen. However, they are not born out of a solitary encounter of God with beings. They are certainly not the kind of prayer for which Jesus went up into the hills. Better that we remain silent and allow our soul, that is always longing for solitude, to sign without words to God. This we can do, even in a crowded day and a crowded room, even under the most difficult external conditions. This can give us moments of solitude that no one can take from us. In these moments of solitude something is done to us. The center of our being, the innermost self that is the ground of our aloneness, is elevated to the divine center and taken into it. Therein can we rest without losing ourselves. Now perhaps we can answer a question you may have already asked—how can communion grow out of solitude? #RandolphHarris 8 of 14

ImageWe have seen that we can never reach the innermost center of another being. We are always alone, each for one’s self. However, we can reach it in a movement that rises first to God and then returns from God to the other self. In this way being’s aloneness is not removed, but taken into the community with that in which the centers of all beings rest, and so into community with all of them. Even love is reborn in solitude. For only in solitude are those who are alone able to reach those from whom they are separated. Only the presence of the eternal can break through the walls that isolate the temporal from the temporal. One hour of solitude may bring us closer to those we live than many hours of communication. We can take them with us to the hills of eternity. And perhaps when we ask—what is the innermost nature of solitude? we should answer—the presence of the eternal upon the crowded roads of the temporal. It is the experience of being alone but not lonely, in view of the eternal presence that shines through the face of the Christ, and that includes everybody and everything from which we are separated. In the poverty of solitude all riches are present. Let us dare to have solitude—to face the eternal, to find others, to see ourselves.  #RandolphHarris 9 of 14

ImageObservation shows beyond any doubt that if they feel the deprivations to be just, fair, necessary or purposeful, children, as well as adults, can accept a great many deprivations. A child does not mind education for cleanliness, for example, if the parents do not put an undue stress on it and do not coerce the child with subtle or gross cruelty. Nor does a child mind an occasional punishment, provides it feels certain in general of being loved and provided it feels the punishment to be fair and not done with the intention of hurting it or humiliating it. The questions of whether frustration as such incites to hostility is difficult to judge, because in surroundings which impose many deprivations on a child plenty of others provocative factors are usually present. What matters is the spirit in which frustrations are imposed rather than the frustrations themselves. The reasons I stress this point is that the emphasis often placed on the danger of frustration as such has led many parents to carry the idea still farther than did Dr. Freud himself and to shrink from any interference with the child lest one might be harmed by it. Jealousy can certainly be a source of formidable hatred in children as well as in adults. There is no doubt about the role that jealousy between siblings and jealousy of one or the other parent may play in neurotic children, or about the lasting influence this attitude may have for later life. #RandolphHarris 10 of 14

ImageOne who is educated by dread is educated by possibility, and only the being who is educated by possibility is educated in accordance with one’s infinity. Possibility is therefore the heaviest of all categories. One often hears, it is true, the opposite affirmed, that possibility is so light but reality is so heavy. However, from whom does one hear such talk? From a lot of miserable beings who never have known what possibility is, and who, since reality showed them that they were not fit for anything and never would be, mendaciously bedizened a possibility which was so beautiful, so enchanting; and the only foundation of this possibility was a little youthful tomfoolery of which they might rather have been ashamed. Therefore by this possibility which is said to be light one commonly understands the possibility of luck, food fortune and so forth. However, this is not possibility, it is a mendacious invention which human depravity falsely embellishes in order to have reason to complain of life, of providence, and as a pretext for being self-important. No, in possibility everything is possible, and one who truly was brought up by possibility has comprehended the dreadful as well as the smiling. When such a person, therefore, goes out from the school of possibility, and knows more thoroughly than a child knows the alphabet that one can demand of life absolutely nothing, and that terror, perdition, annihilation, dwell next door to every being, and has learned the profitable lesion that every dread which alarms may the next instant become a fact, one will then interpret reality differently. #RandolphHarris 11 of 14

ImageOne will then extol reality, and even when it rests upon one heavily one will remember that after all it is far, far lighter than the possibility was. Only thus can possibility educate; for finiteness and the finite relationships in which the individual is assigned a place, whether it be small and commonplace or World-historical, educate only finitely, and one can always talk them around, always get a little more out of them, always Shaffer, always escape a little from them, always keep a little apart, always prevent oneself from learning absolutely from them; and if one is to learn absolutely, the individual must in turn have the possibility in oneself and oneself fashion that from which one is to learn, even though the next instant it does not recognize that it was fashioned by one, but absolutely takes the power from one. However, in order that the individual may this absolutely and infinitely be educated by possibility, one must be honest towards possibility and must have faith. By faith I mean the inward certainty which anticipates infinity. When the discoveries of possibility are honestly administered, possibility will then disclose all finitudes and idealize them in the form of infinity in the individual who is overwhelmed by dread, until in turn one is victorious by the anticipation o faith. #RandolphHarris 12 of 14

ImageEveryone uses from time to time such expressions as, “a thought pops up,” an idea comes “from the blue” or “dawns” or “comes though out of a dream,” or “it suddenly hit me.” These are various ways of describing a common experience: the breakthrough of idea from some depth below the level of awareness. I shall call this realm “the unconscious: as a catchall for the subconscious, preconscious, and other dimensions below awareness. When I use the phrase “the unconscious,” I, of course, mean it as shorthand. There is no such thing as “the unconscious”; it is, rather, unconscious dimensions (or aspects or sources) of experience. I define this unconscious as the potentialities for awareness or action which the individual cannot or will not actualize. These potentialities are the source of what can be called “free creativity.” The exploration of unconscious phenomena has a fascinating relationship to creativity. What are the nature and characteristics of the creativity that has its source in these unconscious depths of personality? When a body is still and ego-mind is at rest, there is peace, sometimes even ecstasy. However, when both are active I am not, when there is neither questing nor non-questing, there is unchanging stability. That is realization. #RandolphHarris 13 of 14

ImageWhen the sense of this presence is a continuous one, when the knowledge of the mentalness of this World-experience is an abiding one, and when the calm which comes as a result is an unshakeable one, it may be said that one is established in the Truth and in the Real. One does not have to enter into formal prayer to find one’s soul. It is an ever-present reality for one, not merely an intellectual conception or emotional belief. If one has no need to sit down specially for an arranged period of prayer, it is only because one has successfully gone through several stages of the practice. In the World you will find only two kinds of people—the unconscious and the conscious. The first kind know only their own little egos and their own large desires. The second kind know continually that they are in the presence of the Overself, and enjoy it great peace. The consciousness of Consciousness never deserts one. It remains somewhere on the outer periphery of the mind all the time and expands to its fullness at special times—that is, when withdrawn from all activity for a few minutes. One lives inwardly silent thought—free awareness of whatever is presented to one, whether it be the body in which one must live or the environment in which one finds oneself. One enjoys a supernal calm, being indeed free while living. #RandolphHarris 14 of 14Image

We Yearn with Desire to Find a Steadfast Place and an Ultimate Fixed Basis whereon We May Build a Tower to Reach the Infinite!

85Oh, how innocent he sounded, how it came from his heart, ancient and childlike, a heart so preternaturally strong that it has taken hundreds of years to render it safe to beat in the company of mortal hearts. Cities are, first of all, seats of the highest economic division of labor. They produce thereby such extreme phenomena as Paris the remunerative occupation of the quatorzieme. They are person who identify themselves by signs on their residences and who are ready at the dinner hour in correct attire, so that they can be quickly called upon if a dinner party should consist of thirteen persons. In the measure of its expansion, the city offers more and more the decisive conditions of the division of labor. It offers a circle which through its size can absorb a highly diverse variety of services. At the same time, the concentration of individuals and their struggles for customers compel the individual to specialize in a function from which one cannot be readily displaced by another. It is decisive that city life has transformed the struggle with nature for livelihood into an inter-human struggle for gain, which here is not granted by nature but by other beings. For specialization does not flow only from the competition for gain but also from the underlying fact that the seller must always seek to call forth new and differentiated needs of the lured customer. #RandolphHarris 1 of 16

ImageIn order to find a source of income which is not yet exhausted, and to find a function which cannot readily be displaced, it is necessary to specialize in one’s services. This process promotes differentiation, refinement, and the enrichment of the public’s needs, which obviously must lead to growing personal differences within this public. All this forms the transition to the individualization of mental and psychic traits which the city occasions in proportion to its size. There is a whole series of obvious causes underlying this process. First, one must meet the difficulty of asserting one’s own personality within the dimensions of metropolitan life. Where the quantitative increase in importance and the expense of energy reach their limits, one seizes upon qualitative differentiation in order somehow to attract the attention of the social circle by playing upon its sensitivity for differences. Finally, beings are tempted to adopt the most tendentious peculiarities, that is, the specifically metropolitan extravagances of mannerism, caprice, and preciousness. Now, the meaning of these extravagances is not at all possessed in the contents of such behavior, but rather in its form of being different, of standing out in a striking manner and thereby attracting attention. For many character types, ultimately the only means of saving for themselves some modicum of self-esteem and the sense of filling a position is indirect, through the awareness of others. #RandolphHarris 2 of 16

ImageIn the same sense a seemingly insignificant factor is operating, the cumulative effects which are, however, still noticeable. I refer to the brevity and scarcity of the interhuman contacts granted to the metropolitan being, as compared with social intercourse in the small town. The temptations to appear to the point, to appear concentrated and strikingly characteristic, is possessed much closer to the individual in brief metropolitan contact than in an atmosphere in which frequent and prolonged association assures the personality of an unambiguous image of one’s self in the eyes of the other. The most profound reason, however, why the metropolis conduces to the urge for the most individual personal existence—no matter whether justified and successful—appears to me to be the following: the development of modern culture is characterized by the preponderance of what one may call the objective spirit over the subjective spirit. This is to say, in language as well as in law, in the technique of production as well as in art, in science as well as in the objects of the domestic environment, there is embodied a sum of spirit. #RandolphHarris 3 of 16

ImageThe individual in one’s intellectual development follows the growth of this spirit very imperfectly and at an ever-increasing distance. If, for instance, we view the immense culture which for the last hundred and fifty years has been embodied in things and in knowledge, in institutions and in comforts, and if we compare all this with the cultural progress of the individual during the same period—at least in high status groups—a frightful disproportion in growth between the two becomes evident. Indeed, at some points we notice a retrogression in the culture of the individual with reference to spirituality, delicacy, and idealism. This discrepancy results essentially from the growing division of labor. For the division of labor demands from the individual an ever more one-sided accomplishment, and the greatest advance in a one-sided pursuit only too frequently means dearth to the personality of the individual. In any case, one can cope less and less with the overgrowth of objective culture. The individual is reduced to a negligible quantity, perhaps less in one’s consciousness than in one’s practice and in the totality of one’s obscure emotional states that are derived from this practice. The individual has become a mere cog in an enormous organization of things and powers which tear from one’s hands all progress, spirituality, and value in order to transform them from their subjective form into the form of a purely objective life. #RandolphHarris 4 of 16

ImageIn needs merely to be pointed out that the metropolis is the genuine arena of this culture which outgrows all personal life. Here in buildings and educational institutions, in the wonders and comforts of space-conquering technology, in the formations of community life, and in the visible institutions, in the wonders and comforts of space-conquering technology, in the formations of community life, and in the visible institutions of the state, is offered such an overwhelming fullness of crystalized and impersonalized spirit that the personality, so to speak, cannot maintain itself under its impact. On the one hand, life is made infinitely easy for the personality in that stimulations, interests, uses of time and consciousness are offered to it from all sides. They carry the person as if in a stream, and one needs hardly to swim for oneself. On the other hand, however, life is composed more and more of these impersonal contents and offerings which tend to displace the genuine personal colorations and incomparabilities. This results in the individual’s summoning the utmost in uniqueness and particularization, in order to preserve one’s most personal core. One has to exaggerate this personal element in order to remain audible even to oneself. The atrophy of individual culture through the hypertrophy of objective culture is one reason for the butter hatred which the preachers of the most extreme individualism harbor against the metropolis. #RandolphHarris 5 of 16

ImageHowever, it is, indeed, also a reason why these preachers are so passionately loved in the metropolis and why they appear to the metropolitan being as the prophets and saviors of one’s most unsatisfied yearnings. If one asks for the historical position of these two forms of individualism which are nourished by the quantitative relation of the metropolis, namely, individual independence and the elaboration of individuality itself, then the metropolis assumes an entirely new rank order in the World history of the spirit. The eighteenth century found the individual in oppressive bonds which had become meaningless—bonds of a political, agrarian, guild, and religious character. They were restraints which, so to speak, forced upon beings an unnatural form and outmoded, unjust inequalities. In this situation the cry for liberty and equality arose, the belief in the individual’s full freedom of movement in all social and intellectual relationships. Freedom would at one permit the noble substance common to all to come to the fore, a substance which nature had deposited in every being and which society and history had only deformed. Besides this eighteenth-century ideal of liberalism, in the nineteenth century, through Goethe and Romanticism, on the one hand, and through the economic division of labor, on the one hand, another ideal arose: individuals liberated from historical bonds now wished to distinguish themselves from one another. #RandolphHarris 6 of 16

ImageThe carrier of being’s values is no longer the general human being in every individual, but rather being’s qualitative uniqueness and irreplaceability. The external and internal history of our time takes its course within the struggle and in the changing entanglements of these two ways of defining the individual’s role in the whole of society. It is the function of the metropolis to provide the arena for this struggle and its reconciliation. For the metropolis presents the peculiar conditions which are revealed to us as the opportunities and the stimuli for the development of both these ways of allocating roles to beings. Therewith these conditions gain a unique place, pregnant with inestimable meanings for the development of psychic existence. The metropolis reveals itself as one of those great historical formations in which the opposing streams which enclose life unfold, as well as join one another with equal right. However, in this process the currents of life, whether their individual phenomena touch us sympathetically or antipathetically, entirely transcend the sphere for which the judge’s attitude is appropriate. Since such forces of life have grown into the roots and into the crown of the whole of this historical life in which we, in our fleeting existence, as a cell, belong only as a part, it is not our task either to accuse or to pardon, but only to understand. #RandolphHarris 7 of 16

ImageOur present times call the firsthand information, experience, and individual proof of the Truth, which the Quest alone offers. Institutions and organizations, on the other hand, offer nothing, demand much, and actually impede progress. There are a very few redeeming exceptions which justify their existence, but there are not generally known. The assertion that spiritual chaos and anarchy are the alternatives to spiritual institutionalism and organization is absurd, for the contradictory claims and teachings of the various institutions themselves lead to a chaotic situation. Only the uninformed can be deceived by the outside appearance of unity in these organized groups. The struggles and conflicts and factions which really exist inside them are a better indication of their moral grade than their tall talk in print or lecture. Those who are distrustful of organization for religious purposes find good reasons in history for their attitude. The records betray its inner failure, how it really substitutes one kind of Worldliness for another, how it merely offers ambition a different stage to play on, or how it replaces personal self-seeking by the corporate kind. Why should many who are unable as individuals to life themselves in prayer, devotion, or actions be able to do so as a group? It is illogical to believe that they can, auto-suggestive to believe that they do. The way of group organization is only a poor substitute for the way of individual inspiration. #RandolphHarris 8 of 16

ImageI am quite chary of organization, because I have seen too much in the New World and the Old World of the evils which it quickly breeds, as I am quite unimpressed by centralization because I have seen how hard it is to eradicate the illusions to which it leads. Instead of organization, it is better to encourage individual effort; and instead of centralization, it is wiser to encourage individual deepening. The goal is to move toward a continuous unbroken realization that it is quite unnecessary to stay in monasteries. Only your mind…function in freedom….let it abide nowhere, but be free from attachment to all outside objects. To pray faithfully means to realize that tranquility of essence of the mind is possible. Thorough understanding of the truth about reality and a penetration into and through delusions, to one’s essence of mind, seeks to eliminate the personal feelings usually attached to identification. It is a union of reason and intuition. It is an awakening once and for all. It is not something, a state alternative gained and lost on numerous occasions, but gradually expanded as it is clung to. It is a single awakening that enlightens the being so that one never returns to ignorance again. One has awakened to one’s divine essence, one’s source in mind, as an all day and every day self-identification. It has come by itself, effortlessly. This is as high as human consciousness can possibly go while yet encased in the flesh. #RandolphHarris 9 of 16

ImageThis high of human consciousness is as present to one as one’s clothes, yet it exists through a sixth sense. One lives simultaneously aware of both Worlds of being. And one knows which is the eternal one. When this spiritual state is established in a being, when it stays with one for the remainder of one’s years, one is truly blessed. This state is paradoxical for the very name is really wrong, since it implies something that can be different later or was different earlier, something that is in time. However, what is being here described is not of that kind. Time flows out from it, there is no change yet to come that will better it or bring it any gain. It still is what it always was. Why, then, is the word “state” used at all? Partly, of course, through the poverty of human language in describing what is trans-human and partly because there is a state but it is in us, the change which brings us into being in our minds. Angels do feel dread, this is the very thing that causes Satan to rebel against God and he is very seductive in his truths, but cannot be trusted. It is said that music sooths the savage breast for this is the set of human emotions and the encasement of feelings. Sense humans can be in dread, and the greater the dread, the greater the being. This, however, is not affirmed in the sense in which beings commonly understand dread. Only in this sense can we interpret the passage where is said of Christ that he was in dread [angetes] even unto death, and place also where he says to Judas, “What thou doest, do quickly.” #RandolphHarris 10 of 16

ImageNot even the terrible word upon which even Luther dreaded to preach, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”—not even in this expresses suffering so strongly. For this word indicates a situation in which Christ actually is: the former sayings indicate a relation to a situation which is not yet actual. Dread is the possibility of freedom. Only this dread is by the assistance of faith absolutely educative, laying care is it does all finite aims and discovering all their deceptions. And no Grand Inquisitor has in readiness such terrible tortures as has dread, and no spy knows how to attack more artfully the being one suspects, choosing the instant when one is weakest, nor knows how to lay traps where one will be caught and ensnared, as dread knows ow, and no sharp-witted judge knows how to interrogate, to examine the accused, as dread does, which never lets one escape, neither by diversion nor by noise, neither at work nor at play, neither by day nor by night. However, let us also consider those among us who are surrounded by friends and neighbors, by co-workers and country people, who live in family groups and enjoy the communion of the genders—everything that others do not have. And let us ask—are they without the pain of loneliness? Is their aloneness covered up by the crowd in which they move? #RandolphHarris 11 of 16

ImageIf we can number ourselves among these people, we might answer the question as follows: When I was surrounded by people, but suddenly realized my ultimate isolation, I never felt so lonely as in that particular hour. I became silent and retired from the group in order to be alone with my loneliness. I wanted my external predicament to match my internal one. Let us not minimize such an experience by asserting that some people are simply not strong enough to obtain a significant place in the group, and that their withdrawal is nothing but an expression of weakness, that may call for counseling or psychiatric help. However, I speak now of the strong ones, who have achieved their place in the crowd, and who nevertheless experience the terror of ultimate loneliness. They are aware, in a sudden break through the World around them, of being’s real predicament. Let us also not minimize this experience by pointing out the fact that some people feel misunderstood despite their urgent desire to make themselves understandable, and therefore feel lonely in the crowd. No one can deny that there are such people, and further, that they even demonstrate a certain truth—for who is really understood, even by one’ self? The mystery of a person cannot be encompassed by a neat description of one’s character. Those, however, who always feel misunderstood confuse the mystery of each personality with imaginary treasures which they themselves believe they possess and which demand recognition from others. #RandolphHarris 12 of 16

ImageWhen such recognition is not forthcoming, they feel lonely and withdraw. They also need help. However, again, there are those whose real treasures are great enough to find expression, to be understood and received, and yet who have this terrifying experience of ultimate loneliness. In such moments they break through the surface of their average life into the depth of being’s predicament. Many feel lonely because, in spite of their effort to love and be loved, their love is rejected. This loneliness is often self-centered. These people may be claiming as a right what can only come to them as a gift. They withdraw into a self-chosen loneliness, taking revenge through bitterness and hostility towards those they feel have rejected them, actually enjoying the pain of their loneliness in our time. They above all need help, for the easily become the prey of a demonic force that secludes them completely within themselves. They are not sure that God loves them and feel that he is angry with them. These beings feel the agony of separation from God! Their souls cannot ascend to Heaven! They cannot feel communion with God in their flesh. And as they sit up and lift their arms, these individuals realize they are trying to connect with God with their whole being, and cannot do it, and then the sadness comes over them, so great, so lonely, and so totally that they can only bow their heads. #RandolphHarris 13 of 16

ImageHowever, there is also the genuine experience of rejected love. No special claim is made, but hope yearns toward another, and is disappointed. A community of love comes to an end or fails to exist at all. Such loneliness cuts our ties with the World. We are indeed ultimately alone, and not even love from other directions or the power of our own love can lift this burden from us. One who can endure the loneliness of disappointed love without bitterness experiences the depth of the being’s predicament radically and creatively. There are, finally, two forms of loneliness that cannot be covered or escaped: the loneliness of guilt and the loneliness of death. Nobody can remove from us what we have committed against our true being. We feel both our hidden guilt and our open guilt as ours, and ours alone. We cannot really make anybody else responsible for what we have done. We cannot run away from our guilt, and we cannot honestly cover it up. We are alone with it. And it is a loneliness that permeates all other forms of loneliness, transforming them into experiences of judgment. Then, there is that ultimate loneliness of having to die. #RandolphHarris 14 of 16

ImageIn the anticipation of our death we remain alone. No communication with others can remove it, as no other’s presence in the actual hour of our dying can conceal the fact that it is our death, and our death alone. In the hour of death we are cut off from the whole Universe and everything in it. We are deprived of all the things and beings that made us forget our being alone. Who can endure this loneliness? An anxiety may be fully accounted for by the actual conflict situation. If, however, we find an anxiety-creating situation in a character neurosis we always have to reckon wit previously existing anxieties in order to explain why in that particular instance hostility arouses and was repressed. We shall find then that this previous anxiety was in turn the result of a pre-existing hostility, and so on. In order to understand how the whole development started we have to track back to childhood. In examining the childhood histories of great numbers of neurotic persons I have found that the common denominator in all of them is an environment showing the following characteristics in various combinations. The basic evil is invariably a lack of genuine warmth and affection. A child can stand a great deal of what is often regarded as traumatic—such as a sudden weaning, occasional beating, bonding experience—as long as inwardly one feels wanted and loved. #RandolphHarris 15 of 16

ImageNeedless to say, a child feels keenly whether love is genuine, and cannot be fooled by any faked demonstrations. The main reason why a child does not receive enough warmth and affection is possessed in the parent’s incapacity to give it on account of their own neuroses. More frequently than not, in my experience, the essential lack of warmth is camouflaged, and the patents claim to have in mind the child’s best interest. Educational theories, oversolicitude or self-sacrificing attitude of an ideal mother are the basic factors contributing to an atmosphere that more than anything else lays the cornerstone for future feelings of immense insecurity. Furthermore, we find various actions or attitudes on the part of the parents which cannot but arouse hostility, such as preference for other children, unjust reproaches, unpredictable changes between overindulgence and scornful rejection, unfulfilled promises, and not least important, an attitude toward the child’s needs which goes through all gradations from temporary inconsideration to a consistent interfering with the most legitimate wishes of the child, such as disturbing friendships, ridiculing independent thinking, spoiling its interest in its own pursuits, whether artistic, athletic, or mechanical—altogether an attitude of the parents which if not in intention nevertheless in effect means breaking the child’s will. #RandolphHarris 16 of 16 Image

Is there a Servant of God so Devoted that One Will Remain True to God Even in the Worst of Human Suffering?

ImageWhen they understand, when they can forgive not only God for this big mess, but themselves for their own failures, their own horrible angry reactions, their own spite and meanness, when they love everyone totally in complete forgiveness, then they will be worthy of Heaven. Hell would have to be where they see the consequences of their actions, but with a full merciful comprehension of how little they themselves knew. To know what has hurt others, to realize that you did not know, that nobody gave you the knowledge, yet still you have the power. And to forgive that, and forgive your victims, and forgive God and forgive yourself. That will terminate your anger, your outrage. It is a place where you learn to understand what you have done to another being…where you come to realize the suffering you have inflicted on others! At the same time, the individual gains freedom of movement, far beyond the first jealous delimitation. The individual also gains a specific individuality to which the division of labor in the enlarged group gives both occasion and necessity. The state and Christianity, guilds and political parties, and innumerable other groups have developed according to this formula, however much, of course, the special conditions and forces of the respective groups have modified the general scheme. #RandolphHarris 1 of 17

ImageThis scheme seems to me distinctly recognizable also in the evolution of individuality within urban life. The small-town life in Antiquity and in the Middles Ages set barriers against movement and relations of the individual toward the outside, and it set up barriers against individual independence and differentiation within the individual self. These barriers were such that under them modern beings could not have breathed. Even today a metropolitan being who is placed in a small town feels a restriction similar, at least, in kind. The smaller the circle which forms our milieu is, and the more restricted those relations to others are which dissolve the boundaries of the individual, the more anxiously the circle guards the achievements, the conduct of life, and the outlook of the individual, and the more readily a quantitative and qualitative specialization would break up the framework of the whole little circle. The ancient polis in this respect seems to have had the very character of a small town. The constant threat to its existence at the hands of enemies from near and afar effected strict coherence in political and military respects, a supervision of the citizen by the citizen, a jealousy of the whole against the individual whose particular life was suppressed to such a degree that one could compensate only by acting as a despot in one’s own household. #RandolphHarris 2 of 17

ImageThe tremendous agitation and excitement, the unique colorfulness of Athenian life, can perhaps be understood in terms of the fact that a people of incomparably individualized personalities struggled against the constant inner and outer pressure of a deindividualizing small town. This produced a tense atmosphere in which the weaker individuals were suppressed and those of the stronger natures were incited to prove themselves in the most passionate manner. This is precisely why it was that there blossomed in Athens what must be called, without defining it exactly, the general human character in the intellectual development of our species. For we maintain factual as well as historical validity for the following connection: the most extensive and the most general contents and forms of life are most intimately connected with the most individual ones. They have a preparatory stage in common, that is, they find their enemy in narrow formations and groupings the maintenance of which places both of them into a state of defense against expanse and generality lying without and the freely moving individuality within. #RandolphHarris 3 of 17

ImageJust as in the feudal age, the free being was the one who stood under the law of the land, that is, under the law of the largest social orbit, and the unfree being was the one who derived one’s right merely from the narrow circle of a feudal association and was excluded from the larger social orbit—so today metropolitan beings are free in a spiritualized and refined sense, in contrast to the pettiness and prejudices which hem in the small-town being. For the reciprocal reserve and indifference and the intellectual life conditions of large circles are never felt more strongly by the individual in their impact upon one’s independence than in the thickest crowd of the big city. This is because the bodily proximity and narrowness of space makes the mental distance only the more visible. It is obviously only the verse of this freedom if, under certain circumstances, one nowhere feels as lonely and lost as in the metropolitan crowd. For here as elsewhere it is by no means necessary that the freedom of a being be reflected in one’s emotional life as comfort. It is not only the immediate size of the area and the number of persons which, because of the universal historical correlation between the enlargement of the circle and the personal inner and outer freedom, has made the metropolis the locale of freedom. It is rather in transcending this visible expanse that any given city becomes the seat of cosmopolitanism. #RandolphHarris 4 of 17

ImageThe horizon of the city expands in a manner comparable to the way in which wealth develops; a certain amount of property increases in a quasi-automatical way in ever more rapid progression. As soon as a certain limit has been passed, the economic, personal, and intellectual relations of the citizenry, the sphere of intellectual predominance of the city over its hinterland, grow as in geometrical progression. Every gain in dynamic extension becomes a step, not for an equal, but for a new and larger extension. From every thread spinning out of the city, ever new threads grow as if by themselves, just as within the city the unearned increment of ground rent, through the mere increase in communication, brings the owner automatically increasing profits. At this point, the qualitative aspect of life is transformed directly into qualitative traits of character. The sphere of life of the small town is, in the main, self-contained and autarchic. For it is the decisive nature of the metropolis that its inner life overflows by waves into a far-flung national or international area. Weimar is not an example to the contrary, since its significance was hinged upon individual personalities and died with them; whereas the metropolis is indeed characterized by its essential independence even from the most eminent individual personalities. This is the counterpart to the independence, and it is the price the individual pays for the independence, which one enjoys in the metropolis. #RandolphHarris 5 of 17

ImageThe most significant characteristic of the metropolis is this functional extension beyond its physical boundaries. And this efficacy reacts in turn and gives weight, importance, and responsibility to metropolitan life. Beings do not end with the limits of their body or the area comprising their immediate activity. Rather is the range of the person constituted by the sum of effects emanating from one temporally and spatially. In the same way, a city consists of its total effects which extend beyond its immediate confines. Only this range is the city’s actual extent in which its existence is expressed. This fact makes it obvious that individual freedom, the logical and historical complement of such extension, is not to be understood only in the negative sense of mere freedom of mobility and elimination of prejudices and petty philistinism. The essential point is that the particularity and incomparability, which ultimately every human being possesses, be somehow expressed in the working-out of a way of life. That we follow the laws of our own nature—and this after all is freedom—becomes obvious and convincing to ourselves and to others only if the expressions of this nature differ from the expressions of others. Only our unmistakability proves that our way of life has not been superimposed by others. However, when self-affirmation no longer works, the individual gathers his or her powers together to pit against opposition. #RandolphHarris 6 of 17

ImageA curious aspect of self-assertion is that human beings often seek out opposition in order to practice assertion. This, again, indicates that self-assertion is not pathological but a constructive expression of the power to be. One can observe this relatively early in children, in the second to fourth years. They will the limits, see how far they have to go to invite the opposition of parents, cross the parents for the sake of crossing them, say “no” for the sake of saying “no.” When the environment has introduced the moral issue—for instance, a four-year-old’s assertion is bad because it is in opposition to one’s mother’s demands—the child may concern himself with the question of “good” and “bad” in ways quite different from what the mother expects. Thus, Leo, four, was overheard speaking loudly to himself and asking, “Is he a good boy? Or is he a bad boy?” To which followed a cheerful declaration brought forth with glee, “Yes, good boy is Leo.” In seeking out of opposition, the child will often refuse to do something he is told, standing in the middle of the floor with just a suggestion of a smile on his face as though he somehow knows that this is all a game anyway. The sensible parent accepts this behavior not as a reason for increasing the guilt feeling of the child nor as a pretext for giving in—which would only mean that the child has to try harder to find some other issues in which to get bona fide opposition. #RandolphHarris 7 of 17

ImageFor what the child wants is to try out his psychological muscles. It is a normal and necessary aspect of growing—a will to self-assertion is practiced by the child. Folklore is full of references to the child going out to learn to shiver and to shake, as the German nursery rhyme puts it. Unless there is an actual encounter or the potentiality for an actual encounter, an individual’s power of being remains hidden. The power to be becomes evident in the continual struggles of being against nonbeing, nonbeing is all aspects that negate and destroy being. These include conformism, which destroys uniqueness and originality; hostility, which shrinks courage, generosity, and capacity to understand the other; destructiveness; and, eventually, death itself. We have being to the extent that we can absorb nonbeing into ourselves. A life process is the more powerful, the more non-being it can include in its self-affirmation, without being destroyed by it. The aim is not to overlook or repress expressions of nonbeing, but to confront them directly, accept them as necessity, endeavor to absorb them—all of which reduces their destructive power. Out of this struggle comes creativity. Being is manifested only in the process of actualizing its power; otherwise how could we even be aware of it, let alone know its ramification? Power become actualized in those situations in which opposition is overcome. I estimate the power of a will according to how much resistance, pain, and torture it endures and knows to transform to its own advantage. #RandolphHarris 8 of 17

ImageEvery smallest step in the field of free thinking, and of the personally formed life, has ever been fought for at the cost of spiritual and physical tortures. Nothing has been bought more dearly than that little bit of human reason and freedom which is not the basis for our pride. Remember, God said, “This is the only World. And you know the World. Maybe Sheol awaits you. You have seen the World and Heaven but you have not seen Hell. Throughout my Creation, there are creatures whose spawn numbers in the thousands, of which only a tiny portion survive—fishes of the sea, turtles of the sea, winged insects of the air. A hundred, a million even, of one species may be born under the arc of one day’s Sun, with only a handful to survive and reproduce. Do not you know this? You do not think the beauty of Creation reveals my light to Humankind? You do not think these souls, which your yourself have brought here, have not developed out of a perception of the glory of all that has been made?” Life consists of self-overcoming. All living creatures, far from tending to preserve their existence, strive to enhance themselves, to grow, and to generate more life. In doing this they risk their existence. Life is that which must ever overcome itself. Indeed, you call it will to generation or drive to an end, to something higher, farther, more manifold: but all this is one. #RandolphHarris 9 of 17

ImageThis is why power cannot, strictly speaking, be given to another, for then the recipient still owes it to the giver. It must in some sense be assumed, taken, asserted. For unless it can be held against opposition, it is not power and will never be experiences as real on the part of the recipient. Therefore, it is absurd to think of artists simply as painting nature, as though they were only anachronistic photographers of trees and lakes and mountains. For them, nature is a medium, a language by which they reveal their World. What genuine painters do is to reveal the underlying psychological and spiritual conditions of their relations to their World; thus in the works of a great painter we have a reflection of the emotional and spiritual condition of human beings in that period of history. If you wish to understand the psychological and spiritual temper of any historical period, you can do no better than to look long and searchingly at its art. For in the art the underlying spiritual meaning of the period is expressed directly in symbols. This is not because artists are didactic or set out to teach or to make propaganda; to the extent that they do, their power of expression is broken; their direct relation to the inarticulate, or, if you will, unconscious levels of the culture is destroyed. They have the power to reveal the underlying meaning of any period precisely because the essence of art is the powerful and alive encounter between the artist and one’s World. #RandolphHarris 10 of 17

ImageNowhere was this encounter demonstrated more vividly than in the famous seventy-fifth anniversary exhibit of Picasso’s work, presented in New York in 1957. Broader in temperament than Mondrian, Picasso is a spokesman for his time par excellence. Even in his early works around 1900, his vast talent was already visible. And in the stark, realistic paintings of peasants and poor people in the first decade of this century, his passionate relationship to human suffering was shown. You can then see the spiritual temper of each succeeding decade in his work. In the early 1920s, for example, we find Picasso painting classical Greek figures, particularly bathers by the sea. An aura of escapism hovers about these pictures in the exhibit. Was not the 1920s, the decade after the first World War, in reality a period of escapism in the Western World? Toward the end of the twenties and in the early thirties, these bathers by the sea become pieces of metal, mechanical, gray-blue curving steel. Beautiful indeed, but impersonal, unhuman. And here one was gripped in the exhibit with an ominous foreboding—the prediction of the beginning of the time when people were to become impersonal, objectivized, numbers. It was the ominous prediction of the beginning of the man, the robot. #RandolphHarris 11 of 17

ImageThen in 1937 comes the great painting Guernica, with figures torn apart, split from each other, all in stark white, gray, and black. It was Picasso’s pained outrage against the inhumanity of the bombing of the helpless Spanish town of Guernica by fascist planes in the Spanish revolution; but it is much more than that. It is the most vivid portrayal imaginable of the atomistic, split-up, fragmentized state of contemporary human beings, and implies the conformism, emptiness, and despair that were to go along with this. Then in the late thirties and forties, Picasso’s portraits become more and more machinelike—people turned literally into metal. Faces become distorted. It is as though persons, individuals, do not exist any more; their places are taken by hideous witches. Pictures now are not named, but numbered. The bright colors the artist used in his earlier periods and which were so delightful are now largely gone. In these rooms as the exhibit one feels as though darkness has settled upon the Earth at noon. As in the novel of Kafka, one gets a stark and gripping feeling of the modern individual’s loss of humanity. The first time I saw this exhibit, I was so overcome with the foreboding pictures of human beings losing their faces, their individuality, their humanity, and the prediction of the robot to come, that I could look no longer and had to hurry out of the room and onto the street again. #RandolphHarris 12 of 17

ImageTo be sure, all the way through Picassos preserves his own sanity by playing with paintings and sculptures of animals and his own children. However, it is clear that the main stream is a portrayal of our modern condition, which has been psychologically portrayed by Riesman, Mumford, Tillich, and others. The whole is an unforgettable portrait of modern man and woman in the process of losing their person and their humanity. In these sense genuine artists are so bound up with their age that they cannot communicate separated from it. In this sense, too, the historical situation conditions the creativity. For the superficial level of objectified intellectualization, but is an encounter with the World on a level that undercuts the subject-object split. Creativity, to rephrase our definition, is the encounter of the intensively conscious human being with his or her World. In Anne Rice’s Memnoch the Devil Lestat goes out in search of adventures for the sake of learning what it is to fear or be in dread. We will let that adventurer go his way without troubling ourselves to learn whether in the course of it he encountered the dreadful. On the other hand I would say that learning to know dread is an adventure which every being has to affront if one would not go to perdition either by not having known dread or by sinking under it. He therefore who has learned rightly to be in dread has learned the most important thing. #RandolphHarris 13 of 17

ImageDuring childhood, it is an undisputed fact that we are particularly prone to react with anxiety, and there are good and understandable reasons, possessed in the child’s comparative helplessness against adverse influences. In fact in character neuroses it is invariably found that the formation of anxiety started in early childhood, or at least that the foundation of what I have called basic anxiety was laid in the time. Besides this, however, Dr. Freud believes that the anxiety in adult neuroses is still bound up with the conditions which originally provoked it. This means, for instance, that an adult man would be just as much harasshed by fear of castration, though in modified forms, as he had been as a boy. No doubt there are rare cases in which an infantile anxiety reaction may with appropriate provocations re-emerge in later life in unchanged form. An employee frequently changed position because certain employers provoked wrath and anxiety within him. The psychoanalysis showed that only those superiors having a certain kind of beard infuriated him. The patient’s reaction proved to be an exact repetition of a reaction he had toward his father at three years of age, when the latter attacked his mother in a menacing way. However, as w rule what we find is, in a phrase, not repetition but development. In cases in which the analysis allows us a pretty complete understanding of how a neurosis has developed we may find an uninterrupted chain of reactions from early anxiety to adult peculiarities. #RandolphHarris 14 of 17

ImageTherefore the later anxiety will contain, among, elements conditioned by specific conflicts existing in childhood. However, the anxiety as a whole is not an infantile reaction. To consider it as such would be to confuse two different things, to mistake for an infantile attitude an attitude merely generated in childhood. With at least as much justification as calling anxiety an infantile reaction one might call it a precocious grown-up attitude in a child. The constant application of prayer to the activity of knowledge, to behaviour, thought, and feeling, eventually bring about a continuous awareness. It can accompany daily activity without interfering with it. It is a settled calm, and complete inner quiet. Here are no distinguishing marks that an outside observer can use to identify an enlightened individual because illumination represents consciousness itself rather than its transitory states. It is the lightning flash and considered to be the most desirable goal. Enlightenment is experiences as a pleasure. Because this consciousness is experienced as pleasure, and it is a permanent consciousness, the experiencer does not need to go into prayer. This is despite the outward appearance of a person who places oneself in the posture of prayer in order to achieve something. When you are engaged in outward activity it is not the same as when you are in a trance. This is true for both the beginner and the adept. #RandolphHarris 15 of 17

ImageHowever, our language has wisely sensed the two sides of a being’s being along. It has created the word “loneliness” to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word “solitude” to express the glory of being alone. Although, in daily life, we do not always distinguish these words, we should do so consistently and thus deepen our understanding of our human predicament. In the twenty-fifth Psalm we read—“Turn thou to me and be gracious; for I am lonely and afflicted.” The psalmist feels the pain of loneliness. We do not know the character of his particular loneliness, but we know the many faces that loneliness can have. We have all experienced some of them. Most widespread is our loneliness after those who helped us to forget that we are alone have left us, either through separation or death. I refer not only to those nearest to us, but also to those human beings who give us the feeling of communion, groups with which we have worked, with which we have had social constant, with which we have had spiritual communications. For many people such loneliness becomes a permanent state and a continuous source of profound melancholy. The sighing of innumerable lonely people, all around us and over the World, fills the ears that are opened by love. #RandolphHarris 16 of 17

ImageTheir devotion to the guru, the cult, or the group is, in terms of real spiritual progress, both a help and a hinderance. As a sign, and insofar as it is a measure, of aspiration to rise toward a superior state of being, it is a help. However, as another bar added to the cage in which they live, shutting out all those who are not co-followers or co-members, it increases partisanship and widens prejudice. To bind oneself to a sectarian group and to its ideas is to form another attachment for the ego. Group emotion is worked up until it becomes a substitute for personal inspiration. Either through ignorance of or inability to practise prayer, or both, the group members are happy to share, and are satisfied with, a common experience on the shallowest level. However, nothing will replace individual work at self-development leading to deeper experience and higher knowledge. When too much is made of an organization or institution and too little of the idea behind it, the leaders become tyrannical and the followers fanatical. That is, their character is corrupted. “Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise in his name forever,” reports Alma 26.12. #RandolphHarris 17 of 17Image

ImageA perfect World, or a World destroyed, one or the other—someday will come the end of Hell. And then I shall go back to Heaven, content to stay there for the first moment of my existence, since the beginning of Time. The same factors which have thus coalesced into the exactness and minute precision of the form of life have coalesced into a structure of the highest impersonality; on the other hand, they have promoted a highly personal subjectivity. There is perhaps no psychic phenomenon which has been s unconditionally reserved to the metropolis as the blasé attitude. The blasé attitude results first from the rapidly changing and closely compressed contrasting stimulations of the nerves. From this, the enhancement of metropolitan intellectuality, also, seems originally to stern. Therefore, uneducated people who are not intellectuality alive in the first place usually are not exactly blasé. A life in boundless pursuit of pleasure makes one blasé because it agitates the nerves to their strongest reactivity for such a long time that they finally cease to react at all. In the same way, through the rapidity and contradictoriness of their changes, more harmless impressions force such violent responses, tearing the nerves so brutally hither and thither that their last reserves of strength are spent; and if one remains in the same milieu they have no time to gather new strength. #RandolphHarris 1 of 16

ImageAn incapacity thus emerges to react to new sensations with the appropriate energy. This constitutes that blasé attitude which, in fact, every metropolitan child shows when compared with children of quieter and less changeable milieus. This physiological source of the metropolitan blasé attitude is joined by another source which flows from the money economy. The essence of the blasé attitude consists in the blunting of discrimination. This does not mean that the objects are not perceived, as is the case with halfwit, but rather that the meaning and differing values of things, and thereby the things themselves, are experienced as insubstantial. They appear to the blasé person in an evenly flat and gray tone; no one object deserves preference over any other. This mood is the faithful subjective reflection of the completely internalized money economy. By being the equivalent to al the manifold things in one and the same way, money becomes the most frightful leveler. For money expresses all qualitative differences of things in terms of “how much?” Money, with all its colorlessness and indifference, becomes the common denominator of all values; irreparably in hollows out the core of things, their individuality, their specific value, and their incomparability. All things float with equal specific gravity in the constantly moving stream of money. #RandolphHarris 2 of 16

ImageAll things are possessed on the same level and differ from one anther only in the size of the area which they cover. In the individual case this coloration, or rather discoloration, of things through their money equivalence may be unnoticeably minute. However, through the relations of the rich to the objects to be had for money, perhaps even through the total character which the mentality of the contemporary public everywhere imparts to these objects, the exclusively pecuniary evaluation of objects has become quite considerable. The large cities, the main seats of money exchange, bring the purchasability of things to the fore much more impressively than do smaller localities. That is why cities are also the genuine locale of the blasé attitude. In the blasé attitude the concentration of men and women and things stimulates the nervous system of the individual to its highest achievement so that it attains its peak. Through the mere quantitative intensification of the same conditioning factors this achievement is transformed into its opposite and appears in the peculiar adjustment of the blasé attitude. In this phenomenon the nerves find in the refusal to react to their stimulation the last possibility of accommodating to the contents and form of metropolitan life. #RandolphHarris 3 of 16

ImageThe self-preservation of certain personalities is bought at the price of devaluating the whole objective World, a devaluation which in the end unavoidably drags one’s own personality down into a feeling of the same worthlessness. Whereas the subject of this form of existence has to come to terms with it entirely for oneself, one’s self-preservation in the face of the large city demands from one a no loses negative behavior of a social nature. This mental attitude of metropolitans toward one another we may designate, from a formal point of view, as reserve. If so many inner reactions were responses to the continuous external contacts with innumerable people as are those in the small town, where one knows almost everybody one meets and where one have a beneficial relation to almost everyone, one would be completely atomized internally and come to an unimaginable psychic state. Partly this psychological fact, partly the right to distrust which beings have in the face of the touch-and-go elements of metropolitan life, necessitates our reserve. As a result of this reserve we frequently do not even know by sight those who have been our neighbors for years. And it is this reserve which in the eyes of the small-town people makes us appear to be cold and heartless. #RandolphHarris 4 of 16

Image Indeed, if I do not deceive myself, the inner aspect of this outer reserve is not only indifference but, more often than we are aware, it is a sight aversion, a mutual strangeness and repulsion, which will break into hatred and fight at the moment of a closer contact, however caused. The whole inner organization of such an extensive communicative life rests upon an extremely varied hierarchy of sympathies, indifferences, and aversions of the briefest as well as of the most permanent nature. The sphere of indifference in this hierarchy is not as large as might appear on the surface. Our psychic activity still responds to almost every impression of somebody else with a somewhat distinct feeling. The unconscious, fluid and changing character of this impression seems to result in a state of indifference. Actually this indifference would be just as unnatural as the diffusion of indiscriminate mutual suggestions would be unbearable. From both these typical dangers of the metropolis, indifference and indiscriminate suggestibility, antipathy protects us. A latent antipathy and the preparatory stage of practical antagonism effects the distances and aversions without which this mode of life could not at all be led. The extent and this mixture of this style of life, the rhythm of its emergence and disappearance, the forms in which it is satisfied—all these, with the unifying motive in the narrower sense, from the inseparable whole of the metropolitan style of life. #RandolphHarris 5 of 16

ImageWhat appears in the metropolitan style of life directly as dissociation is in reality only one of its elemental forms of socialization. This reserve with its overtone of hidden aversion appears in turn as the form or the cloak of a more general mental phenomenon of the metropolis: it grants to the individual a kind and an amount of personal freedom which has no analogy whatsoever under other conditions. The metropolis goes back to one of the large developmental tendencies of social life as such, to one of the few tendencies for which an approximately universal formations found in historical as well as in contemporary social structures is this: a relatively small circle firmly closed against neighboring, strange, or in some way antagonistic circles. However, this circle is closely coherent and allows its individual members only a narrow field for the development of unique qualities and free, self-responsible movements. Political and kinship groups, parties and religious associations begin in this way. The self-preservation of very young associations requires the establishment of strict boundaries and a centripetal unity. Therefore they cannot allow the individual freedom and unique inner and outer development. From this stage social development proceeds at once in two different, yet corresponding, directions. To the extent to which the group grows—numerically, spatially, in significance and in content of life—to the same degree the group’s direct, inner unity loosens, and the rigidity of the original demarcation against others is softened through mutual relations and connections. #RandolphHarris 6 of 16

ImageThe confidence that one has wort is normally picked up first from the attitudes of a mother or mother-surrogate toward the infant, and is then cultivated in the family by loyalty to the infant. As the child grows this initial feeling is reinforced by persons outside the family in their appreciation for one and one’s potentialities. Later, the more mature human being seems to keep within one’s memories, to refer to in difficult times, the images of those people who have believed in one. When I was in college I found the experience of having some adult believing in me crucially important; and at times thereafter in my life when I was faced with fateful decisions, I found myself casting about to fasten upon one of these persons. It was not that he or she would, in my memory, tell me what to do. It was rather that at such a time it was important for my own psychological security to find somebody who believed in me. This “belief” included his or her liking me, although it was not chiefly that; it included one’s confidence in my abilities and other qualities which the reader can experience through one’s own treasuring of such persons in memory better than through my attempt at enumeration. Part of the aim of psychotherapy is to help the individual in the steady, often long-term building up of one’s own self-affirmation. #RandolphHarris 7 of 16

ImageWith Leo the building up of his own day-to-day affirmations of himself, less dramatic (so that they rarely get into our notes, and then into case histories) and often hesitantly made, in every session. His dreams began to show a small amount of awareness of his own power: “I was climbing a ladder in which the rungs were weak, but I kept it working by holding the sides together.” Again: “I tamed some horses named Nacho and Peaches.” Or: “I wish I could do such and such.” Or: “I think I can accomplish it.” I would always make sure he knew I had heard such statements by responding in some way. Perhaps at the time I did not believe he could so the thing he wished (if I would take it he would in some way sense it), but I would affirm him by saying: “I too hope that someday you can do it” or “I do not see why you cannot do it eventually.” One way of avoiding this less dramatic but necessary step is shown in Leo’s approach to one of his dreams. That morning he had come in saying three times in three sentences: “It is hard.” Talking in a soft voice he related the following: “I was with my brother Max in a rowboat on the Okanogan River—then we, or rather I, lost the oars. We were then swimming upstream. I said to my brothers: ‘Why do you not rest on my shoulders?’ He put his hands on my shoulders and I began to sink. Then I cried out, think this was not a good idea, and he got off. #RandolphHarris 8 of 16

Image“We landed. Then he wanted to keep swimming. I said: ‘No, the river is polluted.’ He acted as though it did not matter, and he swam down to north central Washington. I asked about the dirt in the river, and he said: ‘No, there was not much, just a little around the shore. My father was waiting for him.” Whatever the exoteric meaning of the dream, the purpose of Leo’s dreaming seemed eminently practical. He put his brother Max into it, the most down-to-Earth member of the family, who had at least worked out a plan. Why not take the chances his brother took? The fact that he dreamed it at all shows he was considering the idea. It is, of course, easier to preserve his innocence by shifting the discussion to cosmic, grandiose levels; but I believe Leo should be kept to the concrete, realistic consideration first. The fact that a human being can be self-conscious vastly increases his need for self-affirmation. We can know we affirm ourselves; or we can experience the lack of self-affirmation and feel shame. In a being, nature and being are not identical. However, for my bird Alex and Mimi, romping around the house, nature and being are identical—it becomes a bird regardless of what it does about it. A bird does not bear the burden of self-consciousness or of knowing that it knows; and while it escapes the guilt of this experience, it is also bereft of its glory. #RandolphHarris 9 of 16

ImageIn the Tsuga mertensiana, known as the mountain hemlock, nature and being are also right; and it is not burdened with thinking about it or even knowing it. Consciousness is the intervening variable between nature and being. It vastly enlarges the human being’s dimensions; it makes possible in one a sense of awareness, responsibility, and a margin of freedom proportionate to tis responsibility. The reflective nature of human consciousness accounts for the fact that studies of terrestrial behavior cast only peripheral light on human aggression. The human being can be infinitely more cruel and can destroy for the sadistic pleasures of it—a privilege that is denied animals. All of this follows from the fact that in the human being nature and being are not identical. What about the souls who shrink in bitterness, who never flower as the heels of warriors walk over them, what about the souls warped and twisted by unspeakable injustice, who go into eternity cursing, what about a whole modern World which is personally angry with God, angry enough to curse Jesus Christ and God himself as Luther did, as Dora did, as you have done, as all have done. People in your modern World of the twenty first century have never stopped believing in God. It is that they hate God; they resent God; they are furious with God. They feel superior to God. #RandolphHarris 10 of 16

ImageI cannot make them care by telling them God came here in the flesh as Jesus Christ to try to persuade human beings to live righteously and condemn the wicked. I cannot show them God’s wounds in Hell. That is not going to win them over, these victims, these grieving, furious sufferers of pain beyond God’s imagining. For souls to have free will and obtain Heaven, suffering was never necessary, the full understanding and receptivity to God never required a fast, a scourging, a crucifixion, a death. I know that the human soul transcended Nature, and needed no more than an eye for beauty to do this! Job was Job before he suffered! Just as after! What did the suffering teach Job that he did not know before? Thus beings become a self only as one participates in one’s development and throws one’s weight being this or that tendency, no matter how limited this choice may be. The self never develops automatically; beings become a self only to the extent that one can know it, affirm it, assert it. This why many continually proclaim the need for commitment and dedication. And this is why a being is more infinitely more educable than most animals and the rest of nature, as far as we know. There are other beings on this planet we know nothing about and have no power over. #RandolphHarris 11 of 16

ImageBeing less instinctually guided, one can, through one’s own awareness, influence to some extent one’s own evolution. Therein is possessed the collective shame and bewilderment of a being a human, and therein also is possessed the greatness of being one. We arrive finally in analyzing the creative act in terms of the question What is this intense encounter with? An encounter is always a meeting between two poles. The subjective pole is the conscious person in the creative act itself. However, what is the objective pole of this dialectical relationship? I shall use a term that will sound too simple: it is the artist’s or scientist’s encounter with one’s World. I do not mean World as environment or as the sum total of things; nor do I refer at all to objects about a subject. World is the pattern of meaningful relations in which a person exists and in the design of which he or she participates. It has objective reality, to be sure, but it is not simply that. World is interrelated wit the person at every moment. A continual dialectical process goes on between World and self and self and World; one implies the other, and neither can be understood if we omit the other. This is why one can never localize creativity as a subjective phenomenon; one can never study it simply in terms of what goes on within the person. #RandolphHarris 12 of 16

ImageThe pole of World is an inseparable part of the creativity of an individual. What occurs is always a process, a doing—specifically a process interrelating the persons and his or her World. How artists encounter their World is illustrated in the work of every genuinely creative painter. Out of the many possible examples of this, I shall choose the superb exhibition of the paintings of Mondrian shown at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1957-58. From his first realistic works in 1904 and 1905, all the way to his later geometrical rectangles and squares in the 1930s, one can see him struggling to find the underlying forms of the objects, particularly trees, that he was painting. He seems to have loved trees. The paintings around 1910, beginning somewhat like Cezanne, move further and further into the underlying meaning of tree-the trunk rises organically from the ground into which the roots have penetrated; the branches curve and bend into the trees and hills of the background in cubistic form, beautifully illustrative of what the underlying essence of tree is to most of us. Then we see Mondrian struggling more and more deeply to find the ground forms of nature; now it is less tree and more the eternal geometric forms underlying all reality. Finally we see him pushing inexorably toward the squares and rectangles that are the ultimate form of purely abstract art. #RandolphHarris 13 of 16

ImageImpersonal? To be sure. The individual self is lost. However this is not precisely a reflection of Mondrian’s World—the World of the decades of the twenties and thirties, the World in the period of emerging fascism, communism, conformism, military power, in which the individual not only feels lost, but is lost, alienated from nature and others as well as oneself? Mondrian’s paintings express creative strength in such a World, an affirmation in spite of the lostness of the individual. In this sense his work is a search for the foundation of individuality that can withstand these anti-human political developments. Anxiety in general results not so much from a fear of our impulses as from a fear of our repressed impulses. Anxiety may result from every impulse of which the expression would incur an external danger. Pleasures of the flesh may certainly be for this kind, but only so long as a strict individual and social taboo resting on them renders them dangerous. From this point of view the frequency with which anxiety is generated by pleasures of the flesh is largely dependent on the existing cultural attitude toward pleasures of the flesh. I do not see that pleasures of the flesh as such is a specific source of anxiety. I do believe, however, that there is such a specific source in hostility, or more accurately repressed hostile impulses. #RandolphHarris 14 of 16

ImageWhenever I find anxiety or indications of it, the questions that come to my mind are, what sensitive spot has been hurt and has consequently provoked hostility, and what accounts for the necessity of repression? My experience is that a search in these directions often leads to a satisfactory understanding of anxiety. Anxiety is not only generated in childhood. There is no doubt that persons whom we call neurotic remain infantile in their attitude towards danger, and have not grown out of antiquated conditions for anxiety. Being educated by the curriculum of misfortune intimates in this challenging passage, may be the paramount education that one receives. The more one is shaken, the more one is introduced to possibilities that would not otherwise be available to one. While these possibilities may seem repellent at first, they could eventually prove far superior to one’s former prospects and instill a far more enduring faith. The loss of a parent, for example, can challenge a client to become more independent in one’s life, more capable. Fear can awaken humility in some clients and a renewed appreciation for limits. Anger can fuel hope, power, and accomplishment. Depression can fuel sensitivity. The question, of course, is how to promote these discoveries and how to sustain them over an extended period. The answer is possessed in the faith one acquires by assimilating one’s anxiety. #RandolphHarris 15 of 16

ImageThere is a moment in the career of the seeker when one may have to face the problem of joining some special organization. Here we can deal only with the general question itself. For most beginners, association with such an organization may be quite helpful, but for most intermediates it will be less so, and for all proficients it will be definitely detrimental. Sooner or later the seeker will discover that in accepting the advantages of such association one has also to accept the disadvantages, and that the price of serving its interests is partnership in its evils. One discovers in time that the institution which was to help one reach a certain end, becomes itself that end. Thus the true gal is shut out of sight, and a false one is substituted for it. One can keep one’s membership in the organization only by giving up something of one’s individual wholeness of mind and personal integrity of character. The organization tends to tyrannize over one’s thoughts and conduct, to weaken one’s power of correct judgment, and to destroy a fresh, spontaneous inner life. One will come in time to refuse to take any organization at its own valuation for one see that it is not the history behind it but the service it renders. The only worthwhile enlightenment is the one which lasts all through the year and every year. It is the difference between visiting a palace (the glimpse) and coming to live permanently in one. #RandolphHarris 16 of 16Image

The Full Development of the Individual is Conditioned by the Most Ruthless Struggle of Individuals

ImageI was lying still somewhere, in an open place, on the rocky ground. I had the veil. I could feel the bulk of it, but I did not dare to reach inside and draw it out or examine it. Help the souls who are lost! Help them. Do not leave them in the whirlwind, do not leave them on Earth struggling to gain understanding. The deepest problems of modern life derive from the claim of the individual to preserve the autonomy and individuality of one’s existence in the face of overwhelming social forces, of historical heritage, of external culture, and of the technique of life. The fight with nature which primitive beings has to wage for one’s bodily existence attains in the modern form its latest transformation. The eighteenth century called upon beings too free themselves of all the historical bonds in the state and in religion, in morals and in economics. Being’s nature, originally good and common to all, should develop unhampered. In addition to more liberty, the nineteenth century demanded the functional specialization of beings and their work; this specialization makes one individual incomparable to another, and each of them indispensable to the highest possible extent. However, this specialization makes each being the more directly dependent upon the supplementary activities of all other. #RandolphHarris 1 of 15

ImageThe full development of the individual is conditioned by the most ruthless struggle of individuals; socialism believes in the suppression of all competition for the same reason. Be that as it may in all these positions the same basic motive is at work: the person resists being leveled down and worn out by a social-technological mechanism. An inquiry into the inner meaning of specifically modern life and its products, into the soul of the cultural body, so to speak, must seek to solve the equation which structures like the metropolis set up between the individual and the super individual contents of life. Such an inquiry must answer the question of how they personality accommodates itself in the adjustments to external forces. The psychology basis of the metropolitan type of individuality consists in the intensification of nervous stimulation which results from the swifts and uninterrupted change of outer and inner stimuli. Beings are a differentiating creature. Their minds are stimulated by the difference between a momentary impression and the one which preceded it. Lasting impressions, impressions which differ only slightly from one another, impressions which take a regular and habitual course and show regular and habitual contrasts—all these use up, so to speak, less consciousness than does the rapid crowding of changing images, the sharp discontinuity in the grasp of single glance, and the unexpectedness of onrushing impressions. #RandolphHarris 2 of 15

ImageThese are the psychological conditions which the metropolis creates. With each crossing of the street, with the tempo and multiplicity of economic, occupational and social life, the city sets up a deep contrast with small town and rural life with reference to the sensory foundations of psychic life. The metropolis exacts from beings as a discriminating creature a different amount of consciousness than does rural life. Here the rhythm of life and sensory mental imagery flows more slowly, more habitually, and more evenly. Precisely in this connection the sophisticated character of metropolitan psychic life becomes understandable—as over against small town life which rests more upon deeply felt and emotional relationships. These latter are rooted in the more unconscious layers of the psyche and grow most readily in the steady rhythm uninterrupted habituations. The intellect, however, has its locus in the transparent, conscious, higher layers of the psyche; it is the most adaptable of our inner forces. In order to accommodate to change and to the contrast of phenomena, the intellect does not require any shocks and inner upheavals; it is only through such upheavals that the more conservative mind could accommodate to the metropolitan rhythm events. #RandolphHarris 3 of 15

ImageThus the metropolitan type of being—which, of course, exists in a thousand individual variants—develops an organ protecting one against the threatening current and discrepancies of one’s external environment which would uproot one. One reacts with one’s head instead of one’s heart. In this an increased awareness assumes the psychic prerogative. Metropolitan life, this, underlies a heightened awareness and a predominance of intelligence in metropolitan beings. The reaction to metropolitan phenomena is shifted to that organ which is least sensitive and quite remote from the depth of the personality. Intellectuality is thus seen to preserve subjective life against the overwhelming power of metropolitan life, and intellectuality branches out in many directions and is integrated with numerous discrete phenomena. The metropolis has always been the seat of the money economy. Here the multiplicity and concentration of economic exchange gives an importance to the means of exchange which the scantiness of rural commerce would not have allowed. Money and economy and the dominance of the intellect are intrinsically connected. They share a matter-of-fact attitude, a formal justice is often coupled with an inconsiderate hardness. #RandolphHarris 4 of 15

ImageThe intellectually sophisticated person is indifferent to all genuine individuality, because relationships and reactions result from it which cannot be exhausted with logical operations. In the same manner, the individuality phenomena is not commensurate with the pecuniary principle. Money is concerned only with what is common to all: it asks for the exchange value, it reduces all quality and individuality to the question: How much? All intimate emotional relations between persons are founded in their individuality, whereas in rational relations beings are reckoned with like a number, like an element which is in itself indifferent. Only the objective measurable achievement is of interest. Thus metropolitan beings reckons with one’s merchants and customers, one’s domestic servants and often even with persons with whom one is obliged to have social intercourse. These features of intellectuality contrast with the nature of the small circle in which the inevitable knowledge of individuality as inevitably produces a warmer tone of behavior, a behavior which is beyond a mere objective balancing of service and return. In the sphere of the economic psychology of the small group it is of importance that under primitive conditions productions serves the customer who orders the goods, so that the producer and the consumer are acquainted. #RandolphHarris 5 of 15

ImageThe modern metropolis, however, is supplied almost entirely by production for the market, that is, for entirely unknown purchasers who never personally enter the producer’s actual field of vision. Through this anonymity the interests of each party acquire an unmerciful matter-of-factness; and the intellectually calculating economic egoisms of both parties need not fear any deflection because of the imponderables of personal relationships. The money economy dominates the metropolis; it has displaced the last survivals of domestic production and the direct barter of goods; it minimizes from day to day, the amount of work ordered by customers. The matter-of-fact attitude is obviously so intimately interrelated with the money economy, which is dominant in the metropolis, that nobody can say whether the intellectualistic mentality first promoted the money economy or whether the latter determined the former. The metropolitan way of life is certainly the most fertile soil for this reciprocity, a point which I shall document merely by citing the dictum of the most eminent English constitutional historian: throughout the whole course of English history, London has never acted as England’s heart but often as England’s intellect and always as her moneybag! #RandolphHarris 6 of 15

ImageIn certain seemingly insignificant traits, which lie upon the surface of life, the same psychic currents characteristically unite. Modern mind has become more and more calculating. The calculative exactness of practical life which the money economy had brought about corresponds to the ideal of natural sciences: to transform the World into an arithmetic problem, to fix every part of the World by mathematical formulas. Only money economy has filled the days of so many people with weighing, calculating, with numerical determinations, with a reduction of qualitative values to quantitative ones. Through the calculative nature of money a new precision, a certainty in the definition of identities and differences, an unambiguousness in agreements and arrangements has been brought about in the relations of the life-elements—just as externally this precision has been effected by the universal diffusion of pocket watches. However, the conditions of metropolitan life are at once cause and effect of this trait. The relationships and affairs of the typical metropolitan usually are so varied and complex that without the strictest punctuality in promises and services the whole structure would break down into an inextricable chaos. Above all, this necessity is brought about by the aggregation of so any people with such differentiated interests, who must integrate their relations and activities into a highly complex organism. #RandolphHarris 7 of 15

ImageIf all clocks and watches in Berlin would suddenly go wrong in different ways, even if only by one hour, all economic life and communication of the city would be disrupted for a long time. In addition an apparently mere external factor—long distances—would make all waiting and broken appointments result in an ill-afforded waste of time. Thus, the technique of metropolitan life is unimaginable without the most punctual integration of all activities and mutual relations into a stable and impersonal time schedule. Here again the general conclusions of this entire task of reflection become obvious, namely, that from each point on the surface of existence—however closely attached to the surface alone—one may drop a sounding into the depth of the psyche so that all the most banal externalities of life finally are connected with the ultimate decisions concerning the meaning and style of life. Punctuality, calculability, exactness are forced upon life by the complexity and extension of metropolitan existence and are not only most intimately connected with its money economy and intellectualistic character. These traits must also color the contents of life and favor the exclusion of those irrational, instinctive sovereign traits and impulses which aim at determining the mode of life from within, instead of receiving the general and precisely schematized form of life from without. #RandolphHarris 8 of 15

ImageEven though sovereign types of personality, characterized by irrational impulse, are by no means impossible in the city, they are, nevertheless, opposed to typical city life. The passionate hatred of the metropolis is understandable in these terms. The nature of some beings discover the value of the alone in the unschematized existence which cannot be defined with precision for all alike. From the same source of this hatred of the metropolis surged their hatred of money economy and the intellectualism of modern existence. The idea of introducing Questers to the Quester has generally failed to effect the original purpose and has not seldom had disappointing results. It is better to recognize that this is an individual work, not to be identified with any group effort, even so small a group as two or three, let alone the larger ones of several dozen. People cannot blend so easily as to form a harmonious friendship or group, even if they are Questers. Yet many beginners in their enthusiasm try to create such friendships and have to learn their lessons when the friendship falls apart. It is better to let people find their affinity and form their companionships in a natural way. There is no duty laid upon anyone, whether teacher or taught, to give introductions unless a direct, intuitive bidding points to that duty. #RandolphHarris 9 of 15

ImageEven where an organization is not actually obstructive or misleading, it is often cumbersome. Can the inquiring and aspiring person find no better refuge anywhere than some rigid church? Must one join some institution and have the rest of one’s life laid out for one by others even if it does violence to one’s own finer feelings and best reasonings? Must one join a crowd of other aspirants or attach oneself to some persuasive leader? It is a fact that many if not most do this, which shows the lack of strength in their minds and characters; but on the other hand a more popular way is easer and more comfortable. Belonging to an elite group, whether or not it be real as self-claimed, allows its members to feel superior, to be condescending, and to denigrate others. A movement may begin and seek to keep free from organization, administration, and authority, but it is unlikely to remain so. For human beings, fallible or ambitious, frail or emotional, will sooner, or later seek to impose their ideas, will, or themselves on the others. Few are willing to sacrifice their desire for the gregarious support offered by joining an organization and therefore few see how this binds them to its strict and rigid doctrines, imprisons them in its practices or methods, and obstructs their free hearing of the intuitive voice of their own soul. #RandolphHarris 10 of 15

ImageWith the capacity of hostility to generate anxiety the relation between the two is not exhausted. The process also works the other ways around: anxiety in its turn, when based on a feeling of being menaced, easily provokes a reactive hostility in defense. In this regard it does not differ in any way from fear, which may equally provoke aggression. The reactive hostility too, if repressed, may create anxiety, and this a cycle is created. This effect of reciprocity between hostility and anxiety, one always generating and reinforcing the other, enables us to understand why we find in neuroses such an enormous amount of relentless hostility. When the intensification of hostility through anxiety is realized it seems unnecessary to look for a special biological source for destructive drives. This reciprocal influence is also the basic reason why severe neuroses so often become worse without any apparent difficult conditions from the outside. It does not matter whether anxiety or hostility has been the primary factor; the point this that is highly important for the dynamics of a neurosis is that anxiety and hostility are inextricably interwoven. I am not enamoured overmuch of this modern habit, which forms a society at faint provocation. A being’s own problem stares one alone in the face, and is not to be solved by any association of others. Every new society we join is a fresh temptation to waste time. #RandolphHarris 11 of 15

ImageThe great mistake of all spiritual organizations is to overlook the fact that progress or salvation is a highly individual matter. Each person has one’s unique attitude towards life; each must move forward by one’s own expanding comprehension and especially by one’s own personal effort. Some people are held spellbound by others because their statements matter. Some authorities speak out of their own doubt-ridden souls—souls which always existed on the boundary. Many are called to give doubt to the faithful and faith to the doubters. Doubting is the symbol of the growing process, and may lead one into the mist interesting and even thrilling phenomena. To doubt constructively requires that one be well fortified with knowledge; the person who knows very little cannot take the risk the doubting requires. When we bring doubt to the faithful, that means these faithful are soundly based and can stand—and even need to stand—looking into the abyss of doubt. They are the one who can take the risk which confronts anyone who gazes into the Holy Void. It takes more than knowledge to doubt; it takes courage. Richness is a product of prolonged and multitudinous doubting. Doubting in this sense is a rich and adventurous back-packing among the high mountains; one’s knowledge gives one a firm footing on the trail but one’s doubt give the sense of venture. #RandolphHarris 12 of 15

ImageDoubt opens new trails to the unknown; one learns new paths; one sees new things on the trip; there are fresh winds blowing from different directions. Doubt in this sense is expressive of the courage to venture when one never knows where one will come out. To venture cases anxiety, but not to venture is to lose one’s self. The courage to doubt for the enlightened is one’s quest for the Holy Void and the use of the soul and love as our teacher. It means our lives are far from simple but at the same time they are glorious. Some may accuse one of being an atheist, but it also means that thousands of others will see one as their guide to meaning, to mystery and blessedness. To live in doubt is to live in ecstasy. It means no loner to live life continually under the phrase “in spite of.” As our faith increase, we will unequivocally know it is because we are seeking the truth and not merely because we are told to believe is the right thing to do. When the masculine and feminine temperaments within us are untied, completed, and balanced, when masculine power and feminine passivity are brought together inside the person and knowledge and reverence encircle them both, then wisdom begins to dawn in the soul. The ineffable reality and the mentalist Universe are then understood to be non-different from other another. #RandolphHarris 13 of 15

ImageWhere both unity and diversity are experienced and the individual is able to attain both these levels, one is surely gifted with insight. However, if diversity has to be blotted out before becoming aware of unity, this may be regarded as a penultimate faculty; that is, the insight is genuine but is still not fully mature. Everything depends on the capacity of the individual. When one’s mind moves entirely and wholly into the One Infinite Presence, and when it settles permanently there, the divided existence of glimpse and darkness, of Spirit and matter, of Overself and ego, of Heaven and Earth, will vanish. The crossing over to a unified existence will happens. The state of nonduality is a state of intense peace and perfect balance. It is so peaceful because everything is seen as it belongs—to the eternal order of cosmic evolution; hence, all is accepted, all reconciled. For the heart in inner harmony and for which everything is one, no difference exists between this and that. Why is it that despite all the visible and touchable counter-attractions, despite the innumerable failures and long years of fruitlessness, so many beings have sought through so many ages in so many lands for God, for wat is utterly intangible, unnamable, shapeless, unseen, and unheard? #RandolphHarris 14 of 15

ImageBecause the simple but astonishing fact is that the Overself, which is the presence of God in them, is part of their nature as human beings is why we search for God! Mysticism is nothing more than the methodical attempt to wake up to this fact. The soul which metaphysics points to in reasoning, mysticism establishes in experience. We all need to feel the divine presence. Even the being who asserts that one does not is no exception. For one indirectly finds it just the same in spite of oneself but under limited forms like aesthetic appreciation or Nature’s inspiration. Even if all contemporary mystics were to die out, even if not a single living being were to be interested in mysticism, even if all mystical doctrines were to disappear from human memory and written record, the logic of evolution would bring back both the teaching and the practice. They are two of those historical necessities which are certain to be regained in the course of humanity’s cultural progress. Because the Overself is already there within one in all its immutable sublimity, beings have not to develop it or perfect it. One has only to develop and perfect one’s ego until it becomes like a polished mirror, held up to and reflecting the sacred attributes of the Overself, and showing openly forth the divine qualities which had hitherto lain hidden behind itself. #RandolphHarris 15 of 15Image

Of Happiness and Despair, We Have No Measure for After the Angel Had Spoken to Us, He Departed!

85All right. Picture this. The population of the World has swelled to billions, and cities have risen though not in very many places, and mostly in that very valley where I had descended and left my marks on the walls of caves. Humankind hand wandered north and south as far as it could on the planet; settlements and towns and forts existed in various stages of development. Human’s wild imaginings of immortality and reunion wit the dead have everywhere given rise to religion. In the Nile Valley, a civilization of astonishing stability has developed, while war is waged all the time in the land we call the Holy Land. Billions of souls are now sputtered with enduring life, and they are of various creeds and yearnings for eternal life, which has brought them to this place with great ferocity. Mad expectations have pitched countless one into confusion. Others have grown so strong they exert a sort of rulership amongst the others. And some have learned some have learned that they can possess, or influence, or harm or love, as they case may be, to get others to do what they wish. The World is also populated by spirit! And some, have no memory anymore at all of being human, have become what men and women will for eternity call demons, prowling about, eager to possess, wreak havoc, or make mischief, as their development allow. #RandolphHarris 1 of 14

ImageAs we can see, humans are alienated because of the conditions in which they work and play. Industrial societies, in the Age of Information, produce certain cultural values. What are those values? What effect o they have on being’s striving for self-achievement?  The urban culture is a money culture, that is, money stamps its character. Monetary interests lend urban society its essentially impersonal character and make beings a mere cog in a giant machine. To survive as an individual in this calculating World, beings must use their heads more than their hearts. The result is a blasé attitude in which nerves and feelings are blunted. If the individual does survive, it is only at the most terrible cost. Most, however, are overwhelmed by the splendor and pressures of the metropolis. When the system of private property produces a surplus of wealth, the possession of wealth becomes the primary means of achieving social status. In time mere wealth becomes an end in itself. It becomes conspicuous waste. Conspicuous because being’s wealth, if it is to secure them the esteem of their peers, must be seen; wasteful, because material but not human ends are served. As material values have gained pre-eminence, spiritual values have declined in direst proportion. #RandolphHarris 2 of 14

ImageThe central fact of modern history is unquestionably the decline of religion as a ruling force in being’s lives. While one may argue with this claim, there can be no disputing the decline. In losing religion, beings lost the concrete connection with a transcendent realm of being; one was set free to deal with this World in all its brute objectivity. However, beings are bound to feel homeless in such a World, which no longer answered the need of one’s spirit. Just how anomie is related to the decline of religion and stimulation of material desire, faith is thought to be no longer a sustaining power and anarchy rules in the economy, any serious breakdown in that economy will have dire results for its victims. Lacking moral stability, they take their own lives. And the lack of spirituality and family values could also be why we are seeing a sharp spike in violence. The spike in violence is probably also due to the fact you have politicians like Jerry Brown and Darrell Steinberg vowing to “fight Trump,” which may also insight violence and also because White men in particular are being demonized by the media just for having pride in their culture, and this is making many people live in fear, have anxiety and feel ashamed of who they are, even though they have done nothing wrong. #RandolphHarris 3 of 14

ImageAfter the industrial revolution men and women continued to sing and dance, but rarely in cohesive groups. (In the latest dance craze, the “twist,” which was made popular by Chubby Checker in the 1960s, bodies never touched. You can see how much culture, just like religion has changed.) The decline of the of group dancing is a paradigm of what is called desocialization or decay. The perpetuation and further growth of desocializing culture involves the inevitability of its own eventual destruction. There are other monsters on Earth, existing twixt the visible and the invisible; but the great thrust of the World was and always has been the fate of its billions of Humankind. Is this pessimistic outlook justified? In place of earlier and cohering beliefs and activities, we now have mass culture. Of happiness and of despair, we have no measure for culture adds to the estrangement of beings. All mass media in the end alienates people from personal experience and, though appearing to offset it, intensify their mortal isolation from each other, from reality and from themselves. The processes brought about by repressed hostility result in the affect of anxiety. In fact, the repression generates exactly the state which is characteristic of anxiety: a feeling of defenselessness toward what is felt an overpowering danger menacing from the outside. #RandolphHarris 4 of 14

ImageThough the steps by which anxiety develops are simple in principle, in practice it is usually difficult to understand the conditions of anxiety. One of the complicating factors is that the repressed hostile impulses are frequently projected not on the person factually concerned but on something else. In one of Dr. Freud’s case histories, for example, the little Hans did not develop an anxiety concerning his parents but an anxiety concerning white horses. An otherwise very sensible patient of mine, after a repression of hostility toward her husband, suddenly developed an anxiety concerning reptiles in the tiled swimming pool. It seems that nothing from germs to thunderstorms is too remote for an anxiety to be attached to it. The reasons for this tendency to detach the anxiety from the person concerned are quite obvious. If the anxiety factually concerns a parent, husband, friend or one in similar close relationship the assumption of hostility is felt to be incompatible with an existing tie of authority, love or appreciation. The maxim in these cases is he denial of hostility all around. By repressing one’s own hostility the person denies that there is any hostility on one’s part, and by projecting one’s repressed hostility to thunderstorms one denies any hostility on the other’s part. Many illusions of happy marriage rest on an ostrich policy of this kind. #RandolphHarris 5 of 14

ImageThat a repression of hostility leads with inexorable logic to the generation of anxiety does not mean that anxiety must become manifest every time the process takes place. Anxiety may be removed instantaneously by one of the protective devices we have discussed or shall discuss later. A person in such a situation may protect oneself by such means, for example, as developing an enhanced need for sleep or taking to drink. There are infinite variations in the forms of anxiety which may ensue from the process of repressing hostility. For instance, though things, or objects, have a radically different existence than do conscious human beings, we so often treat the two in the same way. Increasingly, society identifies people’s roles with their overall beings; factory managers, for example, perceive their workers as mechanical parts; consumers equate producers with things (for instance, clerk-things, waiter-things, doctor-things); and even governments, such as the American Democratic Party, views its citizens as moldable tools of the state. Yet our authentic existence is completely contrary to these frozen interpretations of our lives: it is a “no-thing.” At every instant, that is, we are completely free to disengage from who we were that instant before, not in the sense of changing our material reality or the circumstances within which are thrust, but in the sense of adopting attitudes toward these facticities. #RandolphHarris 6 of 14

ImageTo live authentically, then, one must be prepared, at each instant, to negate one’s identities of the past, to create new identities (or attitudes), and to affirm the nothingness that one is. How workable is this demanding vision of being? It is highly workable because we live it whether we want to acknowledge the point or not. We are condemned to be free. It is extremely difficult to achieve such a liberated state. For unlike experiencing a fullness of Being, it would be like a constant state of disorientation, or nausea—a void that we would be perpetually responsible for filling. It would also be a disconnected state, completely immune to subconscious (for example, cultural, historical, or personal) influences. However, do we really have to acknowledge total freedom to adopt attitudes toward a given situation in order to be considered authentic; or are there mitigating circumstances, pre- or unreflected-upon meanings, that color and limit our attitudinal range? Inherent in power-to-be is the need to affirm one’s own being. This, the second level in our spectrum, is the quiet, undramatic form of self-belief. It arises from an original feeling of worth imparted to the infant through the love of a parent or parents in the early months, and it shows itself later on in life as a sense of dignity. The word dignity, coming from the Latin dignus, “worthy,” means a “feeling of intrinsic worth,” an essential for every mentally healthy human being. #RandolphHarris 7 of 14

ImageMany things many happen to this initial longing to be valued. Sometimes people believe things like, “I am worth something, but nobody in the World knows it.” Or they may feel, “I am not worth anything, and I am not supposed to be except when others can use me for pleasures of the flesh.” Or some may believe, “I am not worthy anything, but allied with God I am worth everything in the World.” The error many persons make is that of bypassing self-affirmation and jumping straight from powerlessness into aggression and violence. When one has always been powerless, the heady feeling one gets when one first realizes one is does have power seems to be intoxicating. It is as though one had to summon up adrenalin in order to experience the fact that one has power to be, and once the adrenalin is present, one moves on the strength of it into aggressive behavior. Hence persons in therapy often go through periods of being what their friends and family call excessively aggressive just after they realize their own power to be. This aggression or violence can burn like bonfire, but is generally no more than a temporary exercise. If self-affirmation, as a step in a person’s development, is omitted or given the staying capacity and depth to one’s power to be. #RandolphHarris 8 of 14

ImageMany in our culture tend to deny self-affirmation on moral grounds. They have been taught that this urge is selfish or egocentric in the pejorative sense, and that the way to love others is hate yourself. This is one of the most thoroughly anachronistic aspects of our deteriorated puritanism; our attitudes toward others parallel our attitudes toward ourselves and a basic love for ourselves is necessary if we are to love others, has now been proved beyond any doubt. The Biblical precept means what it says: Love your neighbor not as you hate yourself but as you love yourself. Therapeutically, it often helps to cast the patient’s behavior into perspective by reminding one, “You would not treat another person as badly as you treat yourself.” Ecstasy is the accurate term for the intensity of consciousness that occurs in the creative act. However, it is not to be thought of merely as a “letting go”; it involves the total person, with the subconscious and unconscious acting in unity wit the conscious. It is not, thus, irrational; it is, rather, suprarational. It brings intellectual, volitional, and emotional functions into play all together. What I am saying may sound strange in the light of our traditional academic psychology. It should sound strange. Our traditional academic psychology has been founded on the dichotomy between subject and object which has been the central character of Western thought for the past four centuries. #RandolphHarris 9 of 14

ImageThis dichotomy between subject and object is the cancer of all psychology and psychiatry up to now. It is not avoided by behaviorism or operationalism, which would define experience only in objective terms. Nor is it avoided by isolating the creative experience as a purely subjective phenomenon. Most psychological and other modern schools of thought still assume this split without being aware of it. We have tended to set reason over against emotions, and have assumed, as an outgrowth of this dichotomy, that we could observe something most accurately if our emotions were not involved—that is to say, we would be least biased if we had no emotional stake at all in the matter at hand. I think this is an egregious error. There are now data in Rorschach responses, for example, that indicate that people can more accurately observe precisely when they are emotionally involved—that is, reason works better when emotions are present; the person sees sharper and more accurately when one’s emotions are engaged. Indeed, we cannot really see an object unless we have some emotional involvement with it. It may well be that reason works best in the state of ecstasy. What manner of encounter releases the vitality? What particular relation to landscape or inner vision or idea heightens the consciousness, brings forth the intensity? #RandolphHarris 10 of 14

ImageBy asking these questions, the teacher soon finds that one is faced by a new problem: the temperamental incompatibilities of the students. They cannot study together without coming into disagreement and they cannot work together without coming into conflict. They take offense too easily and do not realize that the teacher has duties toward many other students besides themselves. They cannot even discover that the teacher has sent more letters of given more interviews to another student without becoming jealous of the latter. Thus the personal factor cannot be eliminated from any group. In the end, the teacher finds that one has to be advise each student not to concern oneself about the others. So the teacher concludes that one can get better results by dealing with each individual separately than in a group. Those who serve the interests of their institution, those who mold its policy and become its instrument, will have to choose between such activity and the Ideal. To overact against the misuse of power of the deficiencies of an institution is to commit a fresh error. Whilst beings are imperfect and whilst power makes them drunk, the real issue is why the inhibitions are there in the first place? We cannot entrust the government of any religious institution, any religious organization, or any human life to a single being. #RandolphHarris 11 of 14

ImageThe organization of church, group, or society along the usual lines is too often motivated by a mixture of urges—some creditable but others not. If there is the desire to spread what is believed to be true, there may also be the desire to occupy a prominent leading position in the organization, the ambition to dominate others. People try to escape their responsibility in this matter by handing it over to an official Church, or Spiritual Guide, or referring to Scripture. However, they fail to see that in the end it is they themselves who judge between doctrines, decide upon beliefs, choose spiritual paths, request ceremonies and accept observances, and finally personally pronounce the words: this is Truth! To accept belief is unconsciously or consciously to pass a judgment, one’s own judgment, on that belief. The illuminate is conscious of both the ultimate unity and the immediate multiplicity of the World. This is a paradox. However, one’s permanent resting place while one is dealing with others is at the junction-point of duality and unity so that one is ready at any moment to absorb one’s attention in either phase. The understanding that everything is illusive is not the final one. It is an essential stage but only a stage. #RandolphHarris 12 of 14

ImageUltimately you will understand that the form and separateness of a thing are illusory, but the thing-in-itself is not. That out of which those forms appear is not different from them, hence Reality is one and the same in all things. This is the paradox of life and a sharp mind is needed to perceive it. However, to bring beginners out of their Earthly attachments, we have to teach first the illusoriness of the World, and then raise them to a higher level of understanding and show that the World is not apart from the Real. That Thou Art unifies everything in essence. However, this final realization cannot be got by stilling the mind, only by awakening it into full vigour again after the spiritual peace has been attained and then letting its activity cease of its own accord when thought merges voluntarily into insight. When that is done, you know the limitations of both soul and enquiry of mind as successive stages. Whoever realizes this truth does not divorce from matter, but realize non-difference from it. Hence we call this highest path the soul’s unity. However, to reach it one has to pass through the revelations of evolution and gain wisdom and knowledge. Christian Science caught glimpses of the higher truth but some get their facts and fancies confused together. Many admire the human heart, loving others as it does, mate with mate, and family with family, they imagine Heaven. #RandolphHarris 13 of 14

ImageBeings have imagined it; the time of the reunion of souls when their kin will be restored to them and to each other, and all will sing in bliss! They have imagined eternity because their love demands it. They have conceived of these ideas as they conceive of fleshly children! And their souls are greats. They reach out beyond the love of self and the service of self in the name of Love. Love goes back and forth between Earth and Heaven eternally. Being know the Lord is here, and they want to know everything about God. And about themselves. They know and they want to know. God’s essence is Goodness, and he will not suffer these souls to cry in gloom and ignorance. God will not suffer the ingenious Humankind to continue without an inkling of the Divine. Souls of the dead have given human much inspiration, and encouragement, and those souls are out of Nature, as many have beheld it, and growing stronger by the day. In this high state one’s own mind is consciously connected with the divine Mind. The result can scarcely be understood by the uninitiated. “And it came to pass that after this manner of language did I persuade my brethren, that they might be faithful in keeping the commandments of God. And after the Angel had spoken unto us, he departed,” reports 1 Nephi 3.21 and 3.30. #RandolphHarris 14 of 14Image

The Soul is Still the Activity of thinking, the Emotion of Joy, and the Discrimination Between X and Y

EAmXu_dUEAAqkLvAnd as we Angels peered into Sheol, as we passed into it,  invisible, our essence causing no disturbance in a realm that was purely souls at that point…souls and nothing but souls…we realized these souls were strengthened in their survival by the attentions of those living on Earth, by the love being sent to them by humans, by the thoughts of them in human minds. It was a process. And just as with Angels, these souls were individuals with varying degrees of intellect, interest, or curiosity. They were hosts as well to Hudegrees of spiritual illumination, which accounts both for the varying outlooks to be found among the mystics and for the different kinds of Glimpse among aspirants. All illumination and all Glimpses free the soul from its negative qualities and base nature, but in the latter case only temporarily. One is able, as a result, to see into one’s higher nature. In the first degree, it is as if a window covered with dirt were cleaned enough to reveal a beautiful garden. One can symbolically look down and see flowers of the World enjoy the petal and the center colors. The colors themselves were so distinct and so finely delineated one may be unsure that our spectrum is even involved. I mean, it is as if out spectrum of color is not the limit! #RandolphHarris 1 of 13

ImageThe soul is still the activity of thinking, the emotion of joy, and the discrimination between X and Y. In the next and higher degree, it is as if the window were still more leaned so that still more beauty is revealed beyond it. Here there are no thoughts to intervene between the seer and the seen. In the third degree, the discrimination is no longer present. In the fourth degree, it is as if the window were thoroughly cleaned. Here there is no longer even a rapturous emotion but only a balanced happiness, a steady tranquility which, being beyond the intellect, cannot properly be described by the intellect. Some soul, for example, knew they were dead, and sought to respond to the prayers of their children, and actively attempted to advise, speaking with all the power they could muster in a spiritual voice. They struggled to appear to their children. Sometimes they broke through for a fleeting seconds, gathering to themselves swirling particles of matter by the sheer force of their invisible essence. Other times they made themselves visible in dreams, when the soul of the sleeping human was opened to other souls. They told their children of the bitterness and darkness of death, and that they must be brave and strong in life. They gave their children advice. And the seemed, in some instance at least, to know that the belief and attention of their sons and daughters strengthened them. #RandolphHarris 2 of 13

ImageThese souls requested prayers and offerings, they reminded the children of their duty. These souls were to some extent the least confused, expect for one thing. They thought they had seen all these was to be seen. There was no hint of Heaven, no light from Heaven penetrated Sheol, nor any music. From Sheol one saw the darkness and the stars, and the people of Earth. Again, mental peace is a fruit of the first and lowest degree of illumination, although thoughts will continue to arise although gently, and thinking in the discursive manner will continue to be active although slowly. However, concentration will be sufficiently strong to detach one from the World and, as a consequence, to yield the happiness which accompanies such detachment. Only those who have attained to this degree can correctly be regarded as “saved” ad only they alone are unable to fall back into illusion, error, sin, greed, or sensuality. In the second degree, there will be more inward absorption and cerebral processed will entirely fade out. Freedom from all possibility of anger is a fruit of the third degree and higher degree. If you think l entirely fade out. Freedom from all possibility of anger is a fruit of the third degree and higher degree. #RandolphHarris 3 of 13

ImageIf you think you are a god to your children and can still derive strength from the mere sight of the liberation they pour on your grave, the Witness is both an abstract metaphysical concept and a concrete mystical experience. It is not an ultimate one, yielding pure Being, the unsplit Consciousness, but a provisional one. The Witness itself, while witnessing, is being witnessed. Regardless of if the soul’s descendants harken their advice or not, one cannot feel anger toward them, sometimes one will be able to communicate with their descendants with spectacular results. To be the witness is the first stage; to be Witnesses of the witness is the next; but to BE is the final one. For consciousness lets go of the witness in the end. Consciousness alone is itself the real experience. One discovers the presence of this link with World-Mind by a wonderful experience, brief and passing though it be. It is felt intensely and known intuitively. That the divinity is within one is thenceforth one’s certainty even at the times when awareness is absent. However, eventually, if mind develops, one has to asks the question, “What of the World outside?” Until it takes the final leap and transcends itself, human thought can rise to levels of godliness. We may reasonably hope to see God one day but not to be God. The Cosmic Vision of the World-Mind at work can make these souls seem like god to their children. #RandolphHarris 4 of 13

ImageAstral gods of a certain kind. Not the Creator of All. When they come to mortals, some souls know they are ghost. Others think they are alive and the whole World has turned against them. Others simply drift, seeing and hearing the sound of other living beings but remote from this as if in a stupor or dream. And some souls died. The dying soul will last a week, perhaps a month in human time, after its separation from the human body, retaining its shape, and then begin to fade. The essence will gradually disperse. Gone into the air, returned perhaps to the energy and essence of God. Their energy comes back into the Creator; the light of a candle returns to the eternal fire. Yet, these are spiritual beings, made in our image and in God’s image, and they cling to that image and hunger for a life beyond death. That is the agony. The hunger for life beyond death. The souls who become the strongest are those who perceive themselves as gods, or humans passed into the realm of the good God, and attentive to humans; and these souls gain power even to sway the others and strengthen them sometimes and keep them from fading away. There are various degrees and kinds of trance, ranging from mere oblivion to psychical visions and mental travelling, and higher still to a complete immersion of the soul in cosmic Divinity. #RandolphHarris 5 of 13

ImageA rare but complete illumination must not only pass from the first to the final degree of intensity, but must also contain a picture of the cosmic order. That is to say, it must be a revelation. It must explain the profounder nature of the Universe, the inner meaning of individual existence, and the hidden relationship between the two. There are some souls who understand things in a different way. They know they are not gods. They know they are dead humans. They know they do not really have the right to change the destiny of those who pray to them; they know that the libations essentially are symbolic. These souls understand the meaning of the concept of symbolic. They know. And they know they are dead and they perceive themselves to be lost. If they could, they would reenter the flesh. For there in the flesh is all the light and warmth and comfort that they have ever known and can still see. And sometimes these souls manage to do exactly that! Two factors account for the differences between individual cosmic illumination. First, there is the human contribution made by the mind itself; second, there are ascending stages in the Illumination or rather in the receptivity to it. Cosmic Vision is of two kinds: a seeing the forms and objects around and feeling one with them, and seeing only the Idea of the Universe. This is called identifying through worship. It is the subtle Universe. #RandolphHarris 6 of 13

Image It is an advanced experience, not the ultimate so one ought not to stop there. I have witnessed it in various different fashions. I saw these souls deliberately descend and take possession of a stupefied mortal, take our one’s limbs and brain and live in the individual until the being gained the strength to throw the soul off. You know these things. All beings do—what is involved in possession. There is some confusion on this point in the minds of many students. On attaining enlightenment a being does not attain omniscience. At most, one may receive a revelation of the inner operations of life and Nature, of the higher laws governing life and beings. That is, one may also become a seer and find a cosmogony presented to one’s gaze. However, the actuality in a majority of cases is that one attains enlightenment only, not cosmogonical seership. And what I cannot fail to be frightened by, and horrified by Nature, what I cannot ignore is that these souls do have an effect on living men and women. There are those living humans already who have become oracles. They smoke or drink some potion to render their own minds passive, so that a dead soul might speak with their voice! And because these powerful spirit—for I shall call them spirits now—because these powerful spirits know only what Earth and Sheol can teach them, they might urge human beings on to terrible mistakes. #RandolphHarris 7 of 13

ImageI have seen these spirits take possession of someone and order people into battle; I have seen them order executions. I have seen them demand blood sacrifice of human beings. Perhaps this is what is wrong with the thugs outside Mitch McConnell’s home who are currently saying, “Stab the expletive in the heart.” Tomi Lahren what is actually going on is called, “liberal privilege, and that is the misguided belief that those on the left and attack and harass anyone on the conservative side, anyone who is republican, anyone who is a Trump supporter because they believe they have the moral authority to do so.” Humans can create anything. Let us not forget Who Created us all. Angels have gathered, exchanged stories in amazement, then they go off again on their own explorations; they are more entangled with the Earth than they have ever been. However essentially, the reactions of Angels varies. Some, the Seraphim mainly, think the whole process of creation and evolution is downright marvelous; that God deserves a thousand anthems in praise that his Creation should lead to a being who can evolve an invisible deity from itself who would then command it to ever greater efforts at survival of war. Then there are those who think, “This is an error, this is an abomination! These are the souls of humans pretending to be Gods! This is unspeakable and must be stopped immediately!” #RandolphHarris 8 of 13

ImageThe deeper one penetrates into the Void the more one is purified of the illusions of personality, time, matter, space, and causality. Between the second and third stages of insight’s unfoldment there are really two further subsidiary stages which are wrapped in the greatest mystery and are rarely touched by the average mystic. For there are stages which lead further downwards into the Void. Some can touch the edge of the Void, as it is, but not its centre. These two stages are purificatory ones and utterly annihilate the last illusions and the last egoisms of the seeker. They are dissolved forever and cannot revive again. Nothing more useful can and may be said about it here. For this is the innermost holy of holies, the most sacred sanctuary accessible to beings. One who touched this grade touches what may not be spoken aloud for sneering ears, nor written down for sneering eyes. Consequently none has ever ventured to explain publicly what must not be so explained. All those of the bene ha Elohim whom I describe to you are alive now. They are immortal. How could you think it would be any other way? Now, there were souls in Sheol at that time who no longer exist, not in any form I know of, but perhaps they do in some form known to God. Tribes pray to different souls. These souls become their gods. Some are stronger than others. Look at the way everywhere, the battle. #RandolphHarris 9 of 13

ImageAll human beings on this planet are imperfect. Perfection is not fully attainable here. However, when a being has striven for it and advanced near to it, one will attain it automatically as soon as one is freed from the body. So long as beings are immured in this Earth place, so long must the enlightenment one attains be an imperfect one, or the fulfilment one experiences is a limited one. The liberation from further reincarnation can be attained while still here in the flesh, but the full completion of its consequent inner peace can come only after final exit from the body. So long as one is held by the finite flesh, so long as existence in the inner human body is continued, the perfect and complete merger of one’s individuality in the cosmic mind is impossible. However, once through the portals of so-called death, it becomes an actuality. It is not that philosophy denies the possibility of escaping from personal consciousness into the universal one; on the contrary, it well admits it. However, it declares that the journey is still not finished. These souls have only begun their evolution. Who knows how strong they may become? Beings have stepped into the invisible. What if they are meant to become Angels? #RandolphHarris 10 of 13

ImageSome have sensed the presence of Angels on Earth. They sense it as they sense the presence of a dead soul. It is the same part of the brain which perceives other things invisible; I tell you Angels have been glimpsed and shall now be imagined by these people. “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the Angels in Heaven,” reports Matthew 22.30. Believe in the divinity of your deeper self. Stop looking elsewhere for light, stop wandering hither and tither for power. Your intelligence has become falsified through excessive attention to external living, hence you are not even aware in which direction to look when you seek for the real Truth. You are not even aware that all you need can be obtained by the power within, by the omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient Self. You have to change, first of all, the line of thought and faith which pleads helplessly: “I am a weak being; I am unlikely to rise any higher than my present level; I live in darkness and move amid opposing environments that overwhelm me.” Rather should you engrave on your heart the high phrase: “I possess illimitable power within me; I can create a diviner life and truer vision than I now possess. So this and then surrender your body, your heart and mind to the Infinite Power which sustains all. Strive to obey Its inward promptings and then declare your readiness to accept whatsoever lot it assigns you. This is your challenge to God and he will surely answer you. #RandolphHarris 11 of 13

ImageYour soul will be slowly or suddenly liberated; your body will be granted a freer pathway through conditions. You may have to be prepared for a few changes before the feet find rest, but always you shall find that the Power in which you have placed an abiding trust does not go into default. Because one believes that self-improvement, the bettering of what being’s nature, is quite possible, one believes in the quest. One who learns the essence of spiritual questing and the basic need in practical living, learns that one must come into command of oneself. Who is willing to work upon oneself? Who even fees that one has any duty to do so? Yet this simple acknowledgment could lead to the discovery of God. The student of true philosophy is more intent on growth than on study. Each being should be oneself, not represent a copy of another being. However, one should be one’s best self, not one’s worst, one’s lower, one’s lesser. This calls for growth, aspiration, effort, on one’s part. That is to say, it calls for a quest. Out of one’s present self one is to evolve a better one and to actualize one’s higher possibilities. The divine spirit is always there in beings, has always been there; but until one cultivates one’s capacity to become aware of it, it might as well be non-existent for one. #RandolphHarris 12 of 13

ImageThe Overself is always there; it has never left us, but it has to be ardently, lovingly, and subtly searched for. One must carry the idea of “I” to a deeper level of identification. Most groups of human beings, most of their associations, societies, and organizations suffer at some time from trouble caused by human weaknesses and shortcomings. These include divisions, jealousies, malices, and personal dislikes or hostilities. This is true of idealistic and religious groups as of business and professional ones. Those with experience of the cults and organizations know how unsatisfactory they are in the end. The passage of truth from mind to mind has always been a personal matter and cannot be otherwise, just as the training in prayer is equally person. In authentic living is an expression of complacency. It is designed around habit, custom, and the forgetting of life’s temporality. Being-in-the-World, on the other hand, is characterized by presence or responsiveness to the World (with all its possibilities and limits). The authentic person, accordingly, is one who responds, not just to Worldly demands, but to Being itself, or to the call within. What is this call to Being? It is like calling of the poet—passionate, poignant, and welling from the depths. When people live authentically, they have a spontaneous feeling that they are caught up in something above human desires to be achieved.  #RandolphHarris 13 of 13Image

When We Reached the Earth, We Went Our Separate Ways to Perceive things, and Came Together Often!

CaptureAngels are individual, that is the key. We Who Fell are no single species, unless being the brightest, the most clever, and the most comprehending makes us a species, which I do not think it does. When God sent us down to Earth to Watch, specifically to observe all Humankind, we were curious about the dead as the living—this wreath of souls we could see and hear, gathered about the Word, and which we called Sheol immediately because it seemed to us that the realm of these weeping souls was the realm of pure gloom. “Sheol” means gloom. A gathering of Angels decided to go with me, to draw as close as possible to Matter in order to pull together for ourselves our entire knowledge, to better comprehend, as God had asked us to do. We discovered that some beings more sensitive, often more gifted. They want their lives to have some meaning, some fulfillment. They want the feel of living for some worthwhile end. However, often there is something wrong with the seeking. They too suffer from the intrusive ego. Their seeking lacks adequate sincerity. This need of success is greater for them than the need of the thing that is sought. If, for example, they pursue some art, the art itself counts less then the renown of the artist. They would be great artists, great writers, opera singers, pathfinders. They would aim high, but the mark is higher than their reach. #RandolphHarris 1 of 15

ImageWhen we reached the Earth, we went our separate ways to perceive things, and came together often and instantly and agreed upon what we had seen. What united us was our interest in the statement of God that Humankind was part of Nature. We just could not see how this was true. We went exploring. When humans miss their mark for success, they grow disillusioned. They are thrust back on their unsatisfied egos, and the great emptiness is possessed before them. They try to escape, but they run from themselves. They try to forget, but their only recourse is an excitation of the senses. This stimulant needs to be incessantly repeated. The little spell of liberation, the false glow, the hour of oblivion, leave them the more desolate and adds new tensions to the returning emptiness. Then there is leisure no more, no relaxedness, no return to the thing they once loved, no lingering ease of quiet discourse with friends, no natural savor of living, no perception of the unfolding wonder of things. However, instead they pass from excitation to a hollow release, from release to tension, from tension to new excitation. Nothing is itself anymore. And no more at the end of the day do they sink peacefully into the marvelous process of slowly gathering sleep. #RandolphHarris 2 of 15

ImageOnce they were so eager to make life feel real; now they shun its reality and are driven to pursue phantoms, the will-o’-the-wisp of sense-spurred distraction, the unseeing ghost of once clear-eyed joys, the phantom Aphrodite. However, it is not only the more cultivated, the more sophisticated, and the well-to-do with their more ample opportunities, who feel the great emptiness. In other ways it besets large numbers who, finding little satisfaction in their daily work, seek compensation in the leisure they now possess. There are many besides, people who win early pensions or otherwise can get along without toil through legacies or rents or other sources of unearned income, women who have no family cares—the new, unopulent leisure class. They have no training for leisure. They have, most of them, no strong interests of devotions. The habits of their work time convey no meaning to the time of liberation. Most of them live in cities, in drab and narrow confines within which they revolve in casual little circles. They see nothing ahead but the coming of mature age. They want to regain the feel of life. Time is theirs, but they cannot redeem it. #RandolphHarris 3 of 15

ImageSo they too betake themselves, in their various ways, to some form of excitation. Men and women live in large groups, very unlike the other primates, they built shelters for themselves, and they paint their bodies with various colors, the women often live separate from the men, and they believe in something invisible. Now what is that? Is it the souls of the ancestors, the dearly departed who are still locked in the air of Earth, disembodied and confused? Yes, it is the souls of ancestors, but the human worship other entities as well. They image a God who has made the Wild Beasts and to him they make blood sacrifice on Altars, thinking this aspect of Almighty God to be a personality of very distinct limits and rather easy to please or displease. Now I can say all this was a big surprise to me. I had seen the early sign of it. After all, I telescoped millions of years for you in my Revelations. However, when I drew near to these altars, when I heard the specific prayer to the God of the Wild Animals; when I began to see the care and deliberation of the sacrifice—the slaying of the ram or a deer—I was much struck by the fact that not only had these humans come to look like Angels, but they had guessed at the truth. #RandolphHarris 4 of 15

ImageThey had come upon it instinctively! There is a God. They know. They do not know what God is like but they know. And this instinctive knowledge seems to spring from the same essence as does their surviving spiritual souls. Let me be even clearer. Self-consciousness, and the awareness of one’s own death—this has created a sense of distinct individuality in humans, and this individuality fears death; fears annihilation! They see it, know what is happening, see it happening. And pray to a God that he will not let such a thing have no meaning in the World. And it is this very same tenacity—the tenacity of this individuating the shape of the body, holding itself together, so to speak, clinging to life, as it were, perpetuating itself, by shaping itself according to the only World it knows. Having no recourse in themselves, they must get out of themselves. They take the easy ways out because they see no alternative. They have never learned to climb the paths leading to the pleasures that wait in the realm of ideas, in the growing revelation of the nature of things, in the treasuries of the arts, and in the rich lore of the libraries. They must seek instead the quick transport, the dream, the adventure, in the tavern or where the gamblers meet. #RandolphHarris 5 of 15

ImageThey would cover the emptiness they cannot fill. They make a goal of what is a diversion. The healthy being craves an occasional wildness, a jolt from normality, a sharpening of the edge or appetite, one’s own little festival of the Saturnalia, a brief excursion from one’s way of life. However, for these other the diversion becomes the way of life and diverts no more. For them the filled glass is not the cheerful accompaniment of pleasant reunions but a deceitful medicine for the ennui of living. For them the gambling venture is no mere holiday flutter but a never-satisfied urge that forever defeats itself. In 1946, in straitened England, the then equivalent of $6,567,769,230.7 (about $6.6 billion) was placed in bets on the horses and the dogs. (Nacho is from a breed of Boxer dogs that was considered one of the fastest in the races, which is why he has so many problems with his legs now and likes to sleep.) Besides which, vast sums changed hands on the results of football games. For hundreds of thousands of people the major news in the daily papers, day after day and month after month, was the lists of the winners and the betting odds. England was not, is not, alone in this respect. It is only that the figures happen to be more accessible. #RandolphHarris 6 of 15

ImageA former addict explained in the London Spectator why men and women do it. The gambler, he said, “gambles because it provides an emotional tension which his mind demands. He is suffering from a deficiency disease, and the only antidote he knows is gambling.” He is trying to escape the great emptiness. An English worker of the semi-skilled category once said to me: “A fellow has to do something, and what is there? Maybe I have a shilling or two in my pocket. Maybe I could buy an extra shirt. It is no go. So I put them on the dogs.” By these resorts people do not escape the great emptiness. What they get is a sequence of brief delusions of escape. In time the only thing they can escape to is what they themselves know for a delusion. The resort is only a drug to make them forget the disease. As with all such drugs, the dose must be continually renewed, and it becomes harder and harder to return to the pre-addict stage. They come to look on the great emptiness as something inherent in the very nature of things. That is all life is. Now they know the drug is a delusion, but they do not know that it has bred a deeper delusion. There are other avenues of escape that, while they may still be delusive, have the merit of not being recognized as such. Which means that the escape is actually made. #RandolphHarris 7 of 15

ImageIn every large city, and notably in those areas where people go to spend their retirement, like Cresleigh Homes Rocklin Trails, where the climate is mild and sunny, all kinds of special cults flourish and new ones are frequently born. To these places report the hucksters of the supernatural and find a ready market for their wares. There are to be found the prophets of mystical union, robed and turned preachers of the Light of Asia, interpreters of the Rosy Cross, exponents of the Heavenly trance, new healers of the soul, tuners-in of the Infinite, operators in spiritual magics. Considerable numbers flock to them, some to seek a new sensation and then pass on, but some to stay and create a peaceful community. These last ones have found their peace. A stable reality, and nebula for their mystical dream. Back in the days when unremitting toil was the lot of all but the very few and leisure still a hopeless yearning, hard and painful as life was, it still felt real. People were in rapport with the small bit of reality allotted to them, the sense of the Earth, the tang of the changing season, the consciousness of the eternal on-going of birth and death. Now, when so many have leisure, they become detached from themselves, not mere from the Earth. From all the widened horizons of our greater World a thousand voices call us to come near, to understand, and to enjoy, but our ears are not trained to hear them. #RandolphHarris 8 of 15

ImageThe leisure is ours but not the skill to use it. So leisure becomes a void, and from the ensuing restlessness beings take refuge in delusive excitations or fictitious visions, returning to their own Earth no more. The crisis in the European sciences has been the growing effort to impose natural scientific attitudes on the study of human (or psychological) phenomena. The basic problem with this trend is that it reduces, or debases, the human experience. It seeks to understand human behavior in terms of only itself surface (that is, observable, measurable) features; it equates psychological investigation with the investigation of physical or physiological phenomena, seeking to find invariant, universal laws of psychological functioning. In order to show that a phenomenon such as the smile is more than the contraction of the circumoral muscles or that fear or anger or attraction transcend the conditioned reflect, we have to investigate the person to whom these events occurred. The aim of phenomenology is to return to the things themselves, or to provide a method whereby human experience can be studied in its immediacy (as opposed to under controlled or laboratory conditions); the researcher suspends one’s preconceptions (for example, preselected questions) about the phenomenon under study; the researcher immerses oneself in as many aspects (for instance, cognitive, intuitive, affective) of the given phenomenon as possible. #RandolphHarris 9 of 15

ImageAnd the researcher collects and integrates these descriptions to provide a saturated (subjective or intersubjective) interpretation of the given phenomenon. That this method has its parallels in the artist’s mode of perceiving and apprehending phenomena was not lost. For it is precisely art, or the artists mode, that best illuminated psychology for these thinkers; it is precisely the artistic mode that could counterbalance reductionism. If phenomenology was a movement before becoming a doctrine, this was attributable neither to accident, or to fraudulent intent. It is as painstaking and has thorough attentiveness and wonder, and the same demand for awareness, and the same will to seize the meaning of the World, as that meaning comes into being. Phenomenology, on the other hand, is not merely an artistic procedure; it is a systematic method of understanding and sharing data—an artistic-science blend, if you will. This leads us to the intensity of the encounter in the creative act. Absorption, being caught up in, wholly involved, and so on, are used commonly to describe the that artist, or scientist when creating or even the child at play. By whatever name one calls it, genuine creativity is characterized by an intensity of awareness, a heightened consciousness. #RandolphHarris 10 of 15

ImageArtists, as well as you and I in moments of intensive encounter, experience quite clear neurological changes. These include quickened heart beat; higher blood pressure; increased intensity and constriction of vision, with eyelids narrowed so that we can see more vividly the scene we are painting; we become oblivious to things around us (as well as to the passage of time). We experience a lessening of appetite—persons engaged in a creative act lose interest in eating at the moment, and may work right through mealtime without noticing it. Now all of these correspond to an inhibiting of the functioning of the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system (which has to do with ease, comfort, nourishment) and an activation of the sympathetic nervous division. And, lo and behold, we have the flight-fight mechanism, the energizing of the organism for fighting or fleeing. This is the neurological correlate of what we find, in broad terms, in anxiety and fear. However, what the artist or creative scientist feels is not anxiety or fear; it is joy. I use the word in contrast to happiness or pleasure. The artist, at the moment of creating, does not experience gratification or satisfaction, though this maybe the case later, after he or she has a highball or a pipe in the evening. Rather, it is joy, joy defined as the emotion that goes with heightened consciousness, the mood that accompanies the experience of actualizing one’s own potentialities. #RandolphHarris 11 of 15

ImageNow this intensity of awareness is not necessarily connected with conscious purpose or willing. It may occur in reverie or in dreams, or from so-called unconscious levels. An eminent New York professor related an illustrative story. He had been searching for a particular chemical formula for some time, but without success. One night, while he was sleeping, he had a dream in which the formula was worked out and displayed before him. He woke up, and in the darkness he excitedly wrote it down on a piece of tissue, the only thing he could find. However, the next morning he could not read his own scribbling. Every night thereafter, upon going to bed, he would concentrate his hopes on dreaming the dream again. Fortunately, after some nights he did, and he then wrote the formula down for good. It was the formula he had sought and for which he received the Nobel prize. Though not rewarded so dramatically, we have all had similar experiences. Processes of forming, making, building go on even if we are not consciously aware of them at the time. William James once said that we learn to swim in the Winter and to skate in the Summer. #RandolphHarris 12 of 15

Image Whether you wish to interpret these phenomena in terms of some formulation of the unconscious, or prefer to follow William James in connecting them with some neurological processes that continue even when we are not working on them, or prefer some other approach, as I do, it is still clear that creativity goes on in varying degrees of intensity on levels not directly under the control of conscious willing. Hence the heightened awareness we are speaking of does not at all mean increased self-consciousness. It is rather correlated with abandon and absorption, and it involves a heightening of awareness in the whole personality. However, let it be said immediately that unconscious insight or answers to problems that come in reverie do not come hot or miss. They may indeed occur at times of relaxation, or in fantasy, or at other times when we alternate play with work. However, what is entirely clear is that they pertain to those areas in which the person consciously has worked laboriously and with dedication. Purpose in the human being is a much more complex phenomenon than what used to be called will power. Purpose involves all levels of experience. We cannot will to have insight. We cannot will creativity. However, we can will to give ourselves to encounter with intensity of dedication and commitment. #RandolphHarris 13 of 15

ImageThe deeper aspects of awareness are activated to the extent that the person is committed to the encounter. However, the pressure to make all people members of organizations, to herd them together and affix labels, is a kind of mania. Why should there not be room for untrammeled, independent minds, who prefer to remain free and uninfluenced, untied to any one group? It is a common but fallacious belief that by joining a group we get at the truth more quickly, or progress to spiritual reality more easily. When people act together in religious or political organization, they often act worse than they would as individuals. Why is it that the eagerness with which so many disciples flock to join an ashram ends so often in a deterioration of character after they have lived in it for a while? The answer is that there is a fundamental fallacy behind the thinking which draws them into it. It is the fallacy that they have any business with the other disciples. Their true business is with their master alone. #RandolphHarris 14 of 15

ImageThe disadvantage of adhering to a single system of belief or joining a single organization teaching religious, mystical, or hygienic principles is that the sound truths given out are usually one-sided; they ignore others equally sound and valuable but outside the purview of the system’s founder or the organization’s leader. This neglect prevents attainment of the full truth about the subject. For example, one political party speaks of wanting to save the environment, but only focuses on emissions. However, we also need to prevent deforestation, which is why Ethiopia planted 350 million trees in one day.  Trees help to clean the air and release moisture into the air. It would be a good idea to take advantage of the rain by building more reservoirs so that we can have more drinking water and avoid droughts. And we need to reduce the amount of waste we send to the landfills. Landfills just inject garbage into the Earth and make it sick by poisoning. We have to do our best to save the Earth. “Or otherwise, can ye imagine yourselves brought before the tribunal of God with your souls filled with guilt and remorse, having a remembrance of all your guilt, yea, a perfect remembrance of all your wickedness, yea, a remembrance that yet have set at defiance the commandments of God?” (Alma 5.18). #RandolphHarris 15 of 15Image
