Thank you, kind chance; accept my thanks! Erect was she and proud, mysterious and abounding in thought like spruce tree, one shoot, one thought, which deep from interior of the Earth shoos up toward Heaven, unexplained, unexplainable to itself, a unity that has no parts. The beech tree puts on a crown; its leaves tell what has occurred beneath it. The spruce tree has no crown, no history, is a riddle in herself; she herself rose up out of herself; there was a recumbent pride in her like the spruce’s bold escape—although it is riveted to the Earth. A sadness surrounded her, like the cooing of the wood dove, a deep longing that was lacking nothing. She was an enigma that enigmatically possessed its ow solution, a secret, and what are all the secrets of the diplomats compared with this, a riddle, and what in all the World is as beautiful as the word that solves it? How suggestive, how pregnant, the language is: to solve [at lose]—what ambiguity there is in it, with what beauty and with what strength it pervades all the combinations in which this word appears! Just as the soul’s wealth is a riddle as long as the cord of the tongue is not loosened [lost] and thereby the riddle is solved [lost], so also a young lady is a riddle. #RandolphHarris 1 of 22
Thank you, kind chance; accept my thanks! If I had been able to see her in the Wintertime, she no doubt would have been wrapped in the green cloak, benumbed with cold perhaps, and the harshness of nature would have diminished her beauty. But now—what luck! I saw her the first time at the most beautiful time of the year, in the early part of Summer in the afternoon light. Of course, Winter also has its advantages. A brilliantly lighted ballroom may very well be a flattering setting for a young lady dressed for a dance. But for one thing she seldom shows up to her best advantage here precisely because everything requires her to do so—a requirement that has a disturbing effect on her whether she complies with it or does just the opposite. For another, everything is reminiscent of transitiroiness and vanity and evokes an impatience that makes the enjoyment less refreshing. There are certain times when I admittedly would not want to be deprived of a ballroom, deprived of its expensive luxury, its priceless overabundance of youth and beauty, its multiple play of powers, but I do not enjoy it as much as I revel in possibility. It is not a particular beauty who captivates me, but a totality; a visionary picture floats past me in which all these feminine beings blend with one another and all these movements are seeking something, seeking repose in a picture that is not seen. #RandolphHarris 2 of 22
It was on the footpath between Norreport and Osterport. It was about half past six. The Sun had lost its vigour; only a recollection if it was preserved in a soft glimmering that spread over the landscape. Nature breathed more freely. The lake was still, smooth as a mirror. The pleasant, friendly buildings of Blegdam were reflected on the water, which further out was as dark metal. The path and the buildings on the other side were illuminated by the faint rays of the Sun. They sky was clear and open; only a single light cloud glided hazily across it, best observed when one stared fixedly at the lake, over whose smooth brow it disappeared. Not a leaf was stirring. –It was she. My eyes had no deceived me, even though the green cloak had done so. Although I had been prepared for this for a long time, it was impossible for me to control a certain restlessness, a rising and falling like that of the lark as it rises and falls in its song over the nearby fields. She was alone. Once again I have forgotten what she was wearing, and yet I do have an image of her now. She was aloe, preoccupied, obviously not with herself but with her own thoughts. She was not thinking, but the quiet revolving of her thoughts wove an image of longing for her soul that had a presentiment as unexplainable as a young lady’s many sighs. #RandolphHarris 3 of 22
She as in her most beautiful age. A young woman does not develop in the sense that a young man does; she does not grow, she is born. A young man begins to develop immediately and takes a long time to do it; a young woman takes a long time to be born and gracefully matures. In this lies her infinite richness; the moment she is born, she starts to mature, but her birth comes late. Therefore she is born twice: the second time when she marries or, more correctly, at that moment she stops being born—only at the moment is she born. It is not only Minerva who springs full-grown out of Jupiter’s forehead, it is not only Venus who rises up out of the sea in her full beauty—every young woman is like his if her femininity has not been spoiled by what is called developing. She does not gradually awaken, but at once; on the other hand, she dreams that much longer, that is if people are not so unreasonable as to awaken her too soon. However, this dreaming is an infinite richness. She was preoccupied not with herself but within herself, and this preoccupation was boundless peace and repose within herself. In this way a young lady is rich; to embrace this richness makes oneself rich. She is rich, although she does not realize that she possesses anything; she is rich—she is a treasure. A quiet peaceful rested upon her, and a trace of sadness. #RandolphHarris 4 of 22
She was light to lift with the eyes, as light as Psyche, who was carried away by the jinn, even lighter, for she carried herself. Let the teachers of the Church argue about the assumptions of the Madonna; it does not seem incomprehensible to me, for she no longer belonged to the World, but the lightness of a young girl is incomprehensible and mocks the law of gravity. She did not notice anything and for that reason believed that she was not noticed either. I remained at a distance and imbibed her image. She was walking slowly; no sense of haste marred her peace or the tranquility of the surroundings. A boy sat by the lake and finished; she stood still and watched the mirror of the water and the little float. Although she had no been walking fast, she nevertheless wanted to cool off. She loosened a little scarf tied around her neck under her shawl; a gentle breeze from the lake fanned a bosom as white as snow, yet warm and full. The boy did not seem pleased to have a witness to his fishing; he turned and observed her with a rather apathetic look. He really looked ludicrous, and I do not blame her for laughing at him. How youthfully she laughed; if she had been alone with the boy, I believe she would not have been afraid to scrap with him. #RandolphHarris 5 of 22
Her eyes were large and glowing; when one looked into them, they had a dark luster, intimating an infinite depth, since it was impossible to penetrate into them; pure and innocent they were, gentle and calm, full of roguishness when she smiled. Her nose was delicately arched; when I saw her from the side, it seemed to draw back into her forehead and thereby became a bit shorter and a bit more saucy. She walked on; I followed. Fortunately there were several strollers on the path. Exchanging a few words with one person and another, I let her get ahead a little and soon caught up with her again and in that way saved myself the need of having to walk at a distance just as slowly as she did. She walked in the direction of Osterport. I wished to see her closer at hand without being seen. On the corner there was a house from which I might be able to do that. I knew the family and thus needed only to pay them a visit. With a quickened pace, I hurried past her as if I did not notice her in the remotest way. Having gone far ahead of her, I greeted the family all around and then took possession of the window that looked out on the footpath. She came walking along; I looked and looked, while at the same time I spun out chitchat with the tea company in the living room. #RandolphHarris 6 of 22
The way she walked quickly convinced me that she had no much training in dance, and yet there was a pride in it, a natural nobility, but an absence of self-consciousness. I managed to see her one more time than I had actually counted on. From the window, I could not see far down the path, but I could see a dock that ran out into the lake, and to my great amazement I spied her again out there. It occurred to me that perhaps she lived out here in the country; perhaps her family had taken rooms for the Summer. I was already beginning to regret my visit, fearing that she would turn around and I would lose sight of her, indeed, that her appearance at the far end of the dock was a sign that she was vanishing from my sight—and then she appeared nearby. She was walking past the house; I hastily grabbed my hat and my cane with the intention of passing by her and dropping behind her again many times until I discovered where she lived—when in my haste I jolted a woman’s arm just as she was offering tea. There was a frightful shriek; I stood here with hat and cane, wanting only to be off and if possible to give the incident a turn and motivate my retreat. I cried out with paths: I shall be exiled like Cain from this place that saw this tea spilled! #RandolphHarris 7 of 22
However, just as if everything had conspired against me, my host had the dismaying idea or following up my comment and declared loudly and solemnly that I would not be allowed to go before I had enjoyed a cup of tea and had made restitution for the spilled tea by serving the ladies myself. Since I was convinced that in the present situation my host would regard it as a courtesy to use force, there was nothing to do but remain. –She had disappeared. Both psychoanalysts and actors, from different perspectives, have spoken about a “false self,” which is disbelieved, unclaimed self, a part of “me” that is not “really me.” To the psychoanalyst, the false self embodies our acceptance of early parental requirements that we act so as to please others, at the expense of our own needs and desires. This sociocentric, other-directed self comes to live a separate existence from the self we claim. In the extreme case, the false self may set itself up as the real self, which remains completely hidden. More commonly, the false self allows the true self a life of its own, which emerges when there is little danger of its being used by others. The actual content of feelings—or wishes, or fantasies or actions—is not what distinguishes the false self from the true self; the difference lies in whether we claim them as “our own.” #RandolphHarris 8 of 22
This claiming applies to our outward behaviour, our surface acting: “I was not acting like myself.” It also applies to our inner experience, our deep acting: “I made myself go to that part and have a good time even though I was feeling depressed.” Professional actors think of the false self as a marvelous resource that can be drawn upon to move audiences to laughter or tears. They find some margin of unclaimed action and feeling to be wonderfully helpful in getting into the part. The danger for the actor lies in becoming the part one plays, in feeling that one is Hamlet. (Always act in your own person, as an artist. You can never get away from yourself. The moment you lose yourself on the stage marks…the beginning of exaggerated false acting. For losing yourself in the part, you kill the person whom you portray, for you deprived “him” of the real source of life for a part.) Among ordinary people, the false or unclaimed self is what enables one to offer the discretion, the kindness, and the generosity that Noble Savages tend to lack. It is a healthy false self. By giving up infantile desires for omnipotence, a person gains a place in society which can never be attained or maintained by the True Self alone. Our culture’s latest model of an unhealthy false self may be the narcissist. #RandolphHarris 9 of 22
The narcissist feeds insatiably on interactions, competing desperately for the love and admiration in a Hobbesian dog-eat-dog World where both are perpetually scarce. One’s efforts are self-perpetuating because one must discount the results: what admiration one does receive, after all, is offered to one’s false self, not one’s real one. However, out culture has produced another form of false self: the altruist, the person who is overly concerned with the needs of others. In our culture, women—because they have traditionally been assigned the task of tending to the needs of others—are in greater danger of overdeveloping the false self and losing track of its boundaries. If developing a narcissistic false self is the greater danger for men, developing an altruistic false self is the greater danger for women. Whereas the narcissist is adept at turning the social uses of feeling to one’s own advantage, the altruist is more susceptible to being used—not because her sense of self is weaker but because her “true self” is bonded more securely to the group and its welfare. Added to the private sexual division of emotional labour is now the trend toward organizing the ways in which public-contact workers manage emotion. Organizations do this in hopes of having the worker’s true self come to work. They hope to make this private resource a company asset. #RandolphHarris 10 of 22
Yet the more the company offers the worker’s true self for sale, the more the self risks seeming false to the individual worker, and the more difficult it becomes for one to know which territory of self to claim. Given this problem, it becomes all the more important to have access to feeling itself. It is from feeling that we learn the self-relevance of what we see, remember, or imagine. Yet it is precisely this precious resource that is put in jeopardy when a company inserts a commercial purpose between a feeling and its interpretation. For example, sales representatives in the home builder’s Recurrent Training classes were told: “When you get mad at someone for tell you that you owe him or her a smile, you are really mad only because you are focusing on yourself, on how you feel. Get your mind off yourself. Think about how the situation looks to the individual. Usually the person does not mean a thing by it. And anyway that kind of behaviour is not going to change for a long, long time. So do not get mad at that.” When a sales representative feels angry at a homebuyer in this situation, what does one’s anger signal? According to the teacher in Recurrent Training, it indicates that one’s is mislocating one’s self in the World, that one is seeing the homebuyer who demands a smile in the wrong sort of way—that one is oversensitive, too touchy. #RandolphHarris 11 of 22
Being angry does not signal a perception about how emotional display maintains unequal power between sales representatives and homebuyers, and between employees and employers. It indicates something wrong with the assumptions of the customer or the company. In this way the company’s purposes insinuate themselves into the way workers are asked to interpret their own feelings. It raises questions for them at every turn. “Is that how I should think about my anger? Is this how the company wants me to think about it?” Thus the worker may lose touch with one’s feelings, as in burnout or one may have to struggle with the company interpretation of what they mean. Coping with the cost of emotional labour calls for great inventiveness. Among themselves, sales representatives build up an alternative way of experiencing a smile or the word “boy” or “girl”—a way that involves anger and joking and mutual support on the job. And in their private lives—driving back hoe on the freeway, talking quietly with a loved one, sorting it out in the occasional intimacy of a worker-to-worker talk—they separate the company’s meaning of anger from their own meaning, the company rules of feeling from their own. They try to reclaim he managed heart. #RandolphHarris 12 of 22
These struggles, like the costs that make them necessary, remain largely invisible because the kind of labour that gives rise to them—emotional labour—is seldom recognized by those who tell us what labour is. On Broadway Avenue in San Francisco, California in the United States of America, there was once an improvisational theater called The Committee. In one of its acts, a man, who currently likes to remind people to wear their masks, comes to center sage yawing, arms casually outstretched as if ready to prepare oneself for bed. He takes off his hat and lays it methodically on an imaginary bureau top. Then he takes off his hair, a wig apparently. He slowly pulls off his glasses and massages the bridges of his nose where his glasses had rubbed. Then he takes off his nose. Then his teeth. Finally he unhitches his smile and lies down to sleep, a man finally quite “himself.” This insinuation of the “false” into the “true,” of the artificial into the natural, is a widespread trouble. One main cause of it, as it applies to feeling, is that people are made increasingly aware of incentives to use feeling. Those who perform emotional labour in the course of giving service are like those who perform physical labour in the course of masking things: both are subject to the rules of mass production. #RandolphHarris 13 of 22
However, when the product—the thing to be engineered, mass produced, and subjected to speed-up and slowdown—is a smile, a mood, a feeling, or a relationship, it comes to belong more to the organization and less to the self. And so in the country that most publicly celebrates the individual, more people privately winder, without tracing the question to its deepest social root: What do I really feel? In primitive tribal times it was custom in most places to measure knowledge by the length of the beard. Today it is found that many of our cleverest atomic energy scientists are comparatively young and certainly beadless! It is as sensible to follow the primitive custom nowadays as it is to measure virtue by he beauty of the face. Yet it is not an uncommon attitude for self-styles truth-seekers to follow one spiritual teacher because one’s facial appearance pleases them and to reject another teacher because one’s physical figure displeases them! Sokrates was not the most attractive guy, had clumsy feet, and, above all, a number of growths on the forehead and elsewhere, which would suffice to persuade anyone that he was a demoralized subject. This was what Sokrates understood by his favourable appearance in which he was so thoroughly happy that he would have considered it a chicane of the divinity to prevent him from becoming a teacher of morals, had he been given an attractive appearance like an effeminate cithara player. #RandolphHarris 14 of 22
Sokrates felt he would have been blessed if he had a melting glance like a shepherd lad, small fee like a dancing master in the Friendly Society and in toto as favourable an appearance as could have been desired by any applicant for a job through the newspapers, or any theologue who has pinned his hope on a private call. Why was this old teacher so happy over his unfavourable appearance, unless it was because he understood that it must help to keep the leaner at a distance, so that the latter might not stick fast in a direct relationship to the teacher, perhaps admire hi, perhaps have his clothes cut in the same manner? Through the repellent effect exerted by the contrast, which on a higher plane was also the role played by his irony, the leaner would be compelled to understand that one had essentially to do with oneself, and that the inwardness of the truth is not the comradely inwardness with which two bosom friends walk arm in arm, but the separation with which each for oneself exists in the truth. If you as the student choose him as your guide, and if he as the teacher accepts you, what will follow? You should not have mistaken or exaggerated notions about this relation, should not imagine for instance, as so many have imagined that within a week of acceptance you will have supernormal experiences, magically attained the transcendent insight, or receive hour-by-hour watchful care from one. #RandolphHarris 15 of 22
The path is a lifetime one; it may well run contrary to the laws of nature. One’s own work is so widespread and so surprisingly varied, one’s correspondence so large, one’s writing labours so important, that it is physically impossible for a teacher continuously to pay personal attention to the several hundred individuals seeking one’s help. What help then may you legitimately expect from one? You may expect help in the three branches of this path: the development of philosophical intelligence, the practice of mystical mediation, and the living of a wise and virtuous existence. Concerning the first item, your intellectual difficulties questions and problems will be cleared up through advanced disciples or through the pot or, less frequently, at personal interviews. Concerning the second item, you will be given the same privilege with one’s advanced disciples. However, beyond this you must travel your own path. You must faithfully study the needful books, carry on the regular meditations, and try to adjust your actions to your ideals for yourself and by yourself. You cannot omit any part of this work and then rightfully expect the teacher to carry you forward to successful achievement of goal. One may be there to direct, inspire, and encourage your work, but that does not absolve you from doing the work itself. #RandolphHarris 16 of 22
People will not always follow the righteous path you try to learn them down. Critics will exclaim, “How is it that even your own disciples do not follow you?” Well, it is merely the teacher’s task to show the student the path. Some tread it and others do not. If one is to do one’s best, the master must have the continued co-operation of the disciple. The expectations of disciples, their high estimate of one’s character and notion of one’s outlook, may help to make one what one is. The disciple who does not follow the path pointed out to one, who obeys only when it is easy or convenient to obey, commits fraud and does insult to one’s master. The student’s delight in learning must be matched by the maser’s delight in giving. The student’s faith must meet the teacher’s patience and the teacher’s knowledge and integrity must be such as to inspire confidence in the student. “And now it came to pass that after Alma had made an end of speaking unto the people of the church, which established in the city of Zarahemla, he ordained priests and elders, by laying on his hands according to the order of God, to preside and watch over the church. And it came to pass that whosoever did not belong to the church who repented of their sins were baptized unto repentance, and were received into the church. #RandolphHarris 17 of 22
“And it also came to pass that whosoever did belong to the church that did not repent of their wickedness and humble themselves before God—I means those who were lifted up in the pride of their hearts—the same were rejected, and their names were blotted out, that their names were not numbered among those of the righteous. And thus they began to establish the order of the church in the city of Zarahemla. Now I would that ye should understand that the word of God was liberal unto all, that none were deprived of the privilege of assembling themselves together to hear the word of God. Nevertheless the children of God were commanded that they should gather themselves together oft, and join in fasting and mighty prayer in behalf of the welfare of the souls of those who knew not God. And now it came to pass that when Alma had made these regulations he departed from them, yea, from the church which was in the city of Zarahemla, and went over upon the east of the river Sidon, into the valley of Gideon, there having been a city built, which was called the city of Gideon, which was in the valley that was called Gideon, being called after the man who was slain by the hand of Nehor with the sword. #RandolphHarris 18 of 22
“And Alma went and began to declare the word of God unto the church which was established in the valley of Gideon, according to the revelation of the truth of the word which had been spoken by his fathers, and according to the spirit of prophecy which was in him, according to the testimony of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who should come to redeem his people from their sins, and the holy order by which he was called. And thus it is written. Amen,” reports Alma 6.1-8. King of Glory, Divine Majesty, every perfection adorns Thy nature and sustains Thy throne; the Heavens and Earth are Thine, the World is thine and its fullness. Thy power created the Universe from nothing; Thy wisdom had managed all its multiple concerns, presiding over nation, families, individuals. Thy goodness is boundless; all creatures wait on Thee, are satisfied in Thee. How precious are the thoughts of Thy mercy and grace! How excellent Thy lovingkindness that draws humans to Thee! Please teach us to place our happiness in Thee, the blessed God, never seeking life among the dead things of Earth, or asking for that which satisfies the deluded; but may we prize the light of Thy smile, implore the joy of Thy salvation, find our Heaven in Thee. Thou hast attended to our happiness more than we can do; though we are fallen creatures Thou has not neglected us. #RandolphHarris 19 of 22
In love and pity Thou hast provided us a saviour; please apply his redemption to our hearts, by justifying our persons, and sanctifying our natures. We confess our transgressions, please have mercy on us. We are weary, please give us rest, ignorant, please make us wise unto salvation, helpless, please let Thy strength be made perfect in our weakness, poor and needy, please bless us with Christ’s unsearchable riches, perplexed and tempted, please let us travel on unchecked, undismayed, knowing that Thou hast said, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” Blessed by Thy name! O God, Who, passing over the sins of human frailty, dost vouchsafe to unworthy humans the dignity of the Priesthood; and not only pardonest sins, but also art pleased to justify the sinners themselves; of Whose gif it cometh that things which are not should receive a beginning,–having begun, should receive nourishment,–being nourished, should bear fruit, –and being faithful, should be assisted to continue; Who hast created me when I was not, –having created me, hast endured me with stedfast faith, and given to me, being one of the faithful, although defiled by sin, the dignity of the Priesthood; I humbly beseech Thine Almighty goodness to cleanse me from my past sins, to strengthen me in good works during my passage through this World, and to confirm me in unwavering perseverance. #RandolphHarris 20 of 22
And please make me so to serve Thine altars, that I may be able to attain the fellowship of those priests who have been pleasing unto Thee. And may my prayer be acceptable to Thee through Him Who offered up Himself to Thee as a Sacrifice, Who is the Maker of all things, and the only High Priest without Spot of sin, Jesus Christ our Lord. God knows all things; not only things actual but also things possible to Him and creature; and since some of these are future contingent to us, it follows that God knows future contingent things. In evidence of this, we must consider that a contingent thing can be considered in two ways; first, in itself, in so far as it is now in act: and in this sense it is not considered as future, but as present; neither is it considered as contingent (as having reference) o one of two terms, but as determined to one; and on account of this it can be infallibly the object of certain knowledge, for instance to the sense of sight, as when I see the Sokrates is sitting down. In another way a contingent thing can be considered as it is in its cause; and in this way it is considered as future, and as a contingent thing not yet determined to one; forasmuch as a contingent cause has relation to opposite things: and in this sense a contingent things is not subject to any certain knowledge. #RandolphHarris 21 of 22
Hence, whoever knows a contingent effect in its cause only, has merely a conjectural knowledge of it. Now God knows all contingent things not only as they are in cases, but also as each one of them is actually in itself. And although contingent things become actual successively, nevertheless God knows contingent things not only as they are in their causes, but also as each one of them is actually in itself. And although contingent things become actual successively, nevertheless God know contingent things not successively, as they are in their causes, but also as each one of them is actually in itself. And although contingent things become actual successively, nevertheless God knows contingent things not successively, as they are in their own being, as we do but simultaneously. The reason is because His knowledge is measured by eternity, as is also His being; and eternity being simultaneously whole comprises all time, as said above. Hence all things that are in time are present to God from eternity, no only because He has the types things present within Him, as some say; but because His glance is carried from eternity over all things as they are in their presentiality. Hence it is manifest that contingent things are infallibly known by God, inasmuch as they are subject to the divine sight in their preseniality; yet they are future contingent things in relation to their own causes. #RandolphHarris 22 of 22

O God you are most worthy of our love and obedience. However, you who pretend to be ignorant of the frailty of the human sins you allow are unworthy of the priesthood of dignity; and not only do many of you release sins into the World, but you also use them to justify sinners; God made the World, so please honour him. From the beginnings of the existence, God let all receive grace and services that one did not have to earn. May we arise and be nurtured– nourished by the fruit, and partake in the fruitful celebration of persevering help and support for humanity. For whoso findeth God existent and understands He hast created, is creation and the firmness of faith, they shall be enriched. To be faithful, even though the sins of the flesh, one can still advance in the priesthood of the dignity of the assembly. My Lord, with a suppliant, and cry for the omnipotence of Thy being, please draw me from the sins, and make me CLEAN, as the will of the flesh and inequity passeth away. By the good works in the World, may this blessing of the holy spirit remove those whose cruel things linger like the bubonic plague, and may the love of Jesus Christ add solidity and strengthen what is, and add fortification in the perseverance of God’s will. Thus did the faces whose God’s light shone upon attribute to serving the Lord. And those who have been pleasing Priests may be able to reach the kingdom of Heaven. May it be the will of God that when one testifies, one will be mainfested and accepted as having an expert opinion. So one can lead those who are willing to provide obedience and honour to the sacrifice and be seen as one who is a worker of righteousness. With great discerment and passion may one be assimilated to the divine will, without the stain, and be found worhty of the Pope, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
