Take Time to be a Dad Today

The soul is not only responsible for mental or psychological functions like thought, perception and desires, and it is the bearer of moral qualities. The soul is also vital for functions that any living organism performs. There is a hierarchy of levels of organisms from living molecules to multicellular individuals and supraindividual aggregates. The whole of nature is a tremendous architecture in which subordinate systems are united at successive levels into higher and larger systems. Essences and existence are not really distinct principles in things but are merely distinguished in thought. The powers of the soul are not distinct faculties; intellect is the soul understanding, will is the soul desiring and loving. Our conscious activities entail some use of will. Humans are viewed as a volitional rather than as a rational animal. Volition looks very different from the first-person compared with the third-person perspective. From the third-person perspective, human volitional behaviour is clearly on a continuum with volitional behaviour in other species. Many creatures, including invertebrates, behave in ways that are not totally constrained by the immediate environment. In other words, the behaviour is generate from the inside. Many creatures can behave unpredictably and even randomly. Humans differ only in that they have a greater flexibility in the endogenous generation of behaviour, especially in relation to novel behaviour. From this point of view, the idea of a uniquely human form of volition involving free will does not seem very plausible. #RandolphHarris 1 of 9

In contrast, at least in contemporary western cultures, when we take a first-person perspective, we are often vividly aware of being the author of and therefore responsible for our actions. We can also be acutely aware of making choices and strongly believe that we could have done otherwise. This difference between first-and third-person perspectives also influences our attitude to our own actions and those of others. Each of us believes that our own lives are more driven by free will than are the lives of others. My behaviour is driven by my intentions and desires, while yours is driven by your personality, the situation and various unconscious biases. It is the first-person aspect of volition that is uniquely human. We can only study this aspect of volition because people can describe their experiences. This is an ability found only in humans. If our experience of action can be altered by teaching and instructions, then we would expect that the experience of agency might be different in different cultures. Indeed, as we have seen, there is some preliminary evidence for this based on the way in which agency and responsibility are talked about and how punishment is linked to action in some cultures. Moral goodness consists in volitional conformity to God’s will. The obligatory force of law has no basis in the nature of created things, but is solely due to the fact that God has willed a certain action to be right. This is moral and legal voluntarism. God could command that a person deceive another through a lie, and one would not sin. #RandolphHarris 2 of 9

Effect of culture on the experience of action depend on two mental phenomena. First, that we can reflect on our own experiences and absolutely enjoy discussing them with others and second, that our introspections about these experiences are very unreliable. It is precisely because of this unreliability of introspection that experiences can be changed through discussion. One effect of discussion could be to make our introspection more accurate and reliable. For example, through discussion of their visual experience, two people could arrive at a more accurate representation of the World than the best working on one’s own. In the same way, through discussion with others, we might come to a more accurate account of the sources of our actions than we can achieve on our own. This idea seems plausible, given that others may be more aware, than we ourselves, of the various biases that affect our own behaviour. However, the effects of culture on our experience need not necessarily lead to a more accurate account of the cognitive process that generate our actions. For example, we can doubt whether our experience of being a causal agent and, hence, of being responsible for the outcomes of our actions accurately reflects the process underlying our actions. Nevertheless, this experience is extremely important for generating social cohesion and advantages for the group. Perhaps, in this case, we should dispense with accuracy. #RandolphHarris 3 of 9

Possible thins are not absolute beings in an independent realm of ideas, but they depend for their existence on God’s understanding (not on his will). It is a part of God’s essence to think possible things as they are, but they are, only in so far as God thinks them. Humans start out as an isolated intelligence in an alien nature, but the imagination creates a World in its own image, the World of cities and gardens and human communities and domesticated animals. The Bible is a definitive parable of human existence, as it tells how humans find themselves in an unsatisfactory World and try to build a better one—one which eventually takes the form of a splendid golden city, the symbol of the imaginative and creative human community. God is the creative power in human beings, and human power is divine because it is infinite and eternal. These two words to not mean endless in time and spaces; they mean the genuine experience of the central points of time and space, the now and there. Mental things are alone real; but this doctrine of God takes us far beyond the subjective idealism and nominalism of traditional theology. The creation—the alien and stupid nature with the fake news that creates a frenzy in society that we now live in—is part of the fall and is the World human struggle to transcend. The objective World is the anticreation, the enemy to be rehabilitated. #RandolphHarris 4 of 9

No person is distinct from his or her soul. The corporeal understanding, or perverted human activity, contemplates nature as it is (as a vast, objective, subhuman body) and tries to overcomes the alienation of the subject by identifying the subject with nature as it sees nature. Nature is controlled, apparently, by automatic laws like the law of gravitation and by a struggle to survive in which force and cunning are more important that love or intelligence. Perverted human life imitates nature by continually waging war and by maintaining a parasitic class. Perverted religion invents harsh and tyrannical gods on the analogy of nature. Perverted thought exposes itself passively to impressions from the external World and then evolves abstract principles out of these impressions which attempt to formulate the general laws of nature. These are operations known as sensation and reflection. The abstracting tendency is perverted because it is not a genuine effort to understand nature, but is a step toward imitating the automatism of nature by imposing a conforming morality on human life. The principle of this conformity is the acceptance of injustice and exploitation as inescapable elements of existence. The end of this perverted process is hatred and contempt of life, as expressed in the deliberate efforts at self-annihilation, which has manifested in the past with the Napoleonic wars. #RandolphHarris 5 of 9

We should be very concerned with the conflict of these creative and perverted states in human life. The sense of conservatism, of accepting things as they are, is symbolized by Urizen, who is associated with antiquated age and the sky. It is a soul-shuddering vacuum, but unknown, abstracted brooding in secret with hidden dark powers. Times on times he has divided and measured space in his nine-fold darkness. Unseen, unknown changed appeared for he strives in battles dire in unseen conflicts with shapes bred from his forsaken wilderness. When conservatism deepens into hatred of life itself, Urizen is replaced by a more powerful adversary. The force that struggles against Urizen is the revolutionary impulse in humanity called Orc or Luvah, who is associated with youth and sexual desire. Orc cannot achieve a permanent deliverance from Urizen; that is possible only for the creative power itself called Los. The central theme of the prophecies is the effort of humanity, called Albion, to achieve through Los the kind of civilization which is symbolized in the Bible as Jerusalem and thus to reach the integration of human and divine powers represented in Christianity by the Savior. By including both satisfaction and fulfillment in the definition of goodness, we hope to provide for feeling on one hand and reason on the other and, in this way, to resolve the dialectical tension outlined in society. #RandolphHarris 6 of 9

It is not fear that holds us prisoner—it is we who hold fear prisoner. By releasing the prisoner the jailer may walk free. Unification is inclusive and not exclusive. While here on our mortal probation, every desire we have is known to our Source before the personality Self is even aware of it. We enhance the fulfillment of thee desires by giving them equal value to anything else. This way our happiness does not depend on them. Now, they are freed and can gush forth and embrace us in return with their lushness. Anything that would not add value to life could then not manifest as our experience, for any discordant energy having been unified, has become harmonious energy. Only what is not valued. If we do not want the experience, it will never come. Nevertheless, it wants to be valued as an equal part of life. “Therefore, cheer up your hearts, and remember that you are free to act for yourselves—to choose the way of everlasting death or the way of eternal life. Wherefore, my beloved people, reconcile yourselves to the will of God, and not to the will of the adversary and the flesh; and remember, after you are reconciled unto God, that it is only in and through the grace of God that you are saved. Wherefore, may God raise you from death by the power of the resurrection, and also from everlasting death by the power of the atonement, that you may be received into the eternal kingdom of God, that you may praise him through grace divine. Amen,” reports 2 Nephi 10.23-25. #RandolphHarris 7 of 9

When we come to understand what is essential in this life and in the next, it becomes easier to lighten our load. We eliminate excess, set priorities, and reduce distractions that could get us stunk in a difficult situation while other opportunities and people move on. If we are weighed down with guilt, despair, sin, and sadness, it is time to set these things aside and fill our carts with faith, hope, and a regular renewal of our covenants with God. The manifestations of the gift of the Holy Ghost are very seldom manifested publicly, but most generally it has been to individuals in private, in their chambers in the wilderness or fields, and that generally without noise or tumult. Unfortunately, our World is filled with lots of noise and lots of tumult. The adversary knows the greatest leverage point is in that quiet space, so he or she tried to separate us from those moments. Unless we make the time and effort to extract ourselves from the distractions and the noise, the voice of the Spirit may not get through to us. It is important for us to find a quiet place where we can regularly go Humble ourselves before God. Pour out our hearts to our Heavenly Father. Turn to the Lord for answers and for comfort. There is great power in setting aside quiet, prayerful pondering time. #RandolphHarris 8 of 9

The Lord loves us and is involved in every detail of our life. As we are intentional about seeking the Lord every day, he will bless us. The Lord will renew us, and he will grant us peace. “For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance,” reports 1 Thessalonians 1.5. As we search, pray, and believe, we will recognize miracles in our lives and become miracle workers in the lives of others. In a sense al of us are in the middle of our own novels, our own life stories. Sometimes our stories feel very intense, and we would like to read ahead to know our own end, to make sure that everything is going to turn out all rights. While we do not know the particular details of our life’s experience. If we live worthily, fortunately we do know something about our futures. “If we walk righteously, search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good,” reports Doctrines and Covenants 90.24. This promise comes from a tender, caring Father who desires to bless us and give us reason to have faith through our Earthly journey. Knowing that eventually all thing will work together for our own good will help us endure affliction like the faithful people from the scriptures. Sometimes we wee immediate fulfillment of the promises. Other times we plead for year before we see the desired promises fulfilled. #RandolphHarris 9 of 9

#RandolphHarris

#RandolphHarris
