To clear the air of mirages, clichés, and lies are in this country’s very atmosphere has been filled with for hundreds of years. I am telling you like it is! You never have to worry about me biting my tongue if something I know as truth is on my mind. Feelings aroused by the touch of someone’s hand, the sound of music, the fragrance of a flower, a beautiful Sunset (Sun changing angles in the sky), a work of art, love, laughter, hope and faith—all work on both the unconscious and the conscious aspects of the self, and they have physiological consequences as well. Properly speaking, the unconscious is the real psychic; its inner nature is just as unknown to us as the reality of the external World, and it is just as imperfectly reported to us through the data of consciousness as is the external through the indications of our sensory organs. In the first place, it can hardly have escaped any one that we base everything upon the assumptions of a psyche of the mass in which psychic processes occur as in the psychic life of the individual. I utilized a penholder falling from my hands, also signified a sacrifice, but this time, it was a pious offering to avert some evil. #RandolphHarris 1 of 19
In many communities, especially small communities, people have created a benevolent image of themselves as having had so much good-will toward our public, every time any local individual begins suddenly letting the local community leaders know the truth—that the general population is sick of being hind-tit, second-class, disfranchised, that is when you hear, uttered so sadly, “Unfortunately now because of this, our community leaders are starting to turn against the public….It is so regrettable because progress was being made, but now our communications between the social classes have broken down!” We can only see conditions. An obvious example is that one can only start from where one is. Under the impact of new developments in science, ideas in all fields are undergoing rapid change. This is especially true of the Victorians conception of the unconsciousness, which is a general sense for all those mental processes of which the individual is not aware while they occur in one. There is no creature whose inward being is so strong that it is not greatly determined by what lies outside. #RandolphHarris 2 of 19
The present interest in the unconscious is a result of the advance of science and psychology during the past hundred years, and to understand this interest requires some knowledge of the history of ideas. However, the timing of this outburst of interest, its intensity (which is greatest in the English-speaking countries and least in Russia and China), and the particular conception of the unconscious which is not dominant are mainly due to a high degree of success in creating widespread appreciation of the power of the unconscious. This makes the subject a matter of great importance. There have been few peoples since, say, 3,000 years Before Christ that has not possessed myths expressing a sense of the power of divine or natural agencies to influence the individual without one being aware of that influence. Before the emergence of clear conceptions regarding nature and humans there prevailed a sense of the continuity of phenomena, and it was taken for granted that humans were part of a totality in which anything might influence anything else. This assumption of continuity is evident in much of Eastern thought. #RandolphHarris 3 of 19
Western recognition, from around After Death of Christ 1,600, of unconscious mental processes, at first philosophical but gradually becoming more scientific, may be superficially regarded as the rediscover of something that had long been taken for granted in certain Eastern traditions and also in some Greek and Christian writings. Plotinus held that the absence of a conscious perception is no proof of the absence of mental activity. The memory is a faculty extending beyond the grasp of the conscious mind. There is a theory of the mind covering processes in the soul of which we are not immediately aware, and most mystics assumed that insights might be gained by a process of inner reception in which the conscious mind is passive. However, these early ideas lack an essential feature of the modern concept of the unconscious that became possible only after Western thought has set out on the search for precision and scientific validity and, in doing so, had separated the conscious of mind from material processes; that is, this became possible only from about 1600 on. #RandolphHarris 4 of 19
For the ultimate purpose of the concept of unconscious mental processes is to link conscious awareness and behavior with its background—a system of processes of which one is not immediately aware—and to establish this connection without losing the benefits of scientific precision. Here lies the weakness of the concept of the unconscious: it cannot be made fully acceptable to the scientific age until some science or union of sciences has provided an adequate conception of the unity and continuity of conscious thought, unconscious cerebral processes, physiological changes, and the process of growth. In fact, the idea of the unconscious (or some equivalent) can acquire scientific status only after a unified picture of the human organism has repaired the intellectual lesions created by the Cartesian coordinate system that specifics each point uniquely in a plane by a pair of numerical coordinates, which are the signed distances to the point from two fixed perpendicular directed lines, measured in the same unit of the mind as being wholly separate from the corporeal body, and other dualistic or specialized methods. #RandolphHarris 5 of 19
The mind is awareness, provoked as a reaction the Western rediscovery of unconscious mental processes. Mental activity of various kinds occurs without awareness. One can say that the existence of the unconscious mind has become a common assumption of educated and psychological discussions; however, its structure, mode of operation, and role in illness are still being explored. There may be some vital energy without clear consciousness or express attention—our human souls are not always conscious of whatever they have in them—that vital sympathy, by which our soul is united and tied fast to the body, but only in its effect—there is also a more interior kind of plastic power of the soul whereby it is formative of its own cogitations, which it itself is not always conscious of. Soul loss can occur when parts of our souls travel off into other realms, or alternative realities, sometimes being possessed by spirits. When these parts of our souls are not recovered, we cannot seem to find inner completion or wholeness. Aside from our incapacity to feel whole, we begin experiencing feelings of weakness, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and emptiness. #RandolphHarris 6 of 19
Some people who lose their soul may not be able to have romantic relationship, reproduce, and may not connect with other. You will sense a feeling of hollowness around them, like they are not really there. There is no greatness or warmth of mind or feeling because of unsatisfactoriness is innate in birth, aging, death, rebirth, redeath. The core of the spiritual quest is happening in parallel with mutual influences. It is a rare opportunity for an individual to find their ideas on liberation through realization of the true nature of existence. One is here for a reason and it is thought the soulless individual does not really have free will. How much more the formation of our ideas remains secret! Conscious and unconscious in the creative imagination are like warp and weft. The unconscious is really the largest realm in our minds, and just on account of this unconsciousness the inner Africa, whose unknown boundaries may extend far away. The unconscious will in nature and in humans as one’s central theme. The key to the understanding of the character of the conscious lies in the region of the unconscious because the mind is regarded as an iceberg largely below the surface and moved by hidden currents. #RandolphHarris 7 of 19
The conscious is the most important aspect of any being because the mental energy, a topography of the mind, an unpleasure-pleasure principle, and a universal tendency toward stability is achieved. However, it is considered by some philosophers that the consciousness is overvalued because it only touches the surface. Every sequence in consciousness is completely atomistic. The real continuous process takes place below our consciousness; the series and sequence of feeling, thoughts, and so on, are symptoms of this underlying process. All out conscious motives are superficial phenomena; behind them stands the conflict of our instincts and conditions. Where are the new doctors of the soul so we can identity afresh, unprejudiced by all this speculation, and try to identify the precise structure of unconscious processes and their role in particular mental disturbances, so that lesions of the mind might be repaired by systematic techniques. We are concerned with developing and often modified theory of the unconscious mind. #RandolphHarris 8 of 19
The operation of unconscious inhibited ideas and their pressure on consciousness, and of the resulting conflict between conscious and unconscious ideas at the threshold of consciousness. We should not take advantage of the conscious and unconscious because what a person says and does might has deeper meanings than you know. For example, a person may want a large house and stay home and clean it all day because it is safe and one could get exercise without leaving the house. You would be surprised how many miles you can walk when you do house work inside of the house, and this would protect that individual from hardships they may experience. However, unconsciously the person is kind of experiencing an inner death and using the house as a crypt, when one can purify and clean the soul, so when God inspect it, he will find it spotless. So perhaps it is not the person or the house that is dirty, but the individual wants to avoid the dirtiness in the World. Being upset and saying bad things is ungodly, but shutting in and avoiding the World is also bad, unless you fear for your life and safety. No one would want to constantly experience unpleasant things and feel like it is their last days. #RandolphHarris 9 of 19
Emotions and action play a role of the unconscious, thus providing background for the psychiatrist. The pathology of the mind expresses unconscious cerebration. All mental processes are determined by natural laws, ultimately by those governing chemical and physical phenomena; they are associated with quantities of psychic energy that strive toward release and equilibrium; the primary driving force is instinctual energy (libido, a concept that was at first narrowly, then more widely interpreted) expressing an often unconscious wish, and moving from unpleasure to physical pleasure (pleasure principle); the predominant energy is sexual, but other forms are present, and sexuality is a broad sense and aggression. The establishment of civilized life involves restraints on sexual activity, and the unconscious proper (theory the accessible unconscious being called preconscious) consists of instinctual energies, either archaic or repressed during the life of the individual, particularly in childhood (universal forbidden desires of the earliest years, adolescent frustrated dreaming, aggressive impulses, etc.); these are available only through the use of special techniques. #RandolphHarris 10 of 19
A genetic or developmental approach to mental illness is therefore essential. Forgetting is an active process in which painful memories are repressed. The unconscious is a pool of mainly repressed energies, distorted by frustration and exerting a stress on conscious reason and its shaping pf the patterns of daily life. The strain produced by this stress, present in come degree in all civilized men and women, is seen in neurosis. It is only by exceptional luck in heredity or experience that civilized humans can avoid this tragic and potentially universal feature of modern life, the major influence of the unconscious being antagonistic to reason. This doom and neurosis one can escape (wholly might be considered true for some) by becoming aware of one’s situation and gaining insight into the particular traumatic experience which created one’s neurosis. Insight does bring recovery. The interpretation of dreams (which are symptoms and express wish fulfillment) and the process of free association can render accessible the regions of the unconscious producing the neurosis and can make possible the cure. #RandolphHarris 11 of 19
Myths express for communities what dreams do for the individual. We all suffer in some degree from the neurosis of civilization. The theory of repressed unconscious, and it relation to child sexuality, aggression, defense mechanisms, sublimation, and so forth, is a permanent contribution of the highest importance. On the other hand, there sharp categories (conscious—unconscious, wishful—realistic, stages of the sexual development, etc.) are merely recognized, provisional steps toward the truth. However, the attitude toward the unconscious has been regarded as biological. Yet, it was not so in a genuine sense, for all viable organisms display an organizing principle, not quite understood, which ensures that everything occurs in support of the continuation of life. This coordination and formative principle underlies all organic properties, including the process of the human unconscious, such as the imaginative and inventive faculties without which civilization could not have developed. Much research on the unconscious lacks physicochemical information to the organism dominant ideas of the theory of the mind. #RandolphHarris 12 of 19
When it comes to the mind, many people are over analytic or atomistic, but lack a general and powerful principle of coordination. Many people treat the person as a unity, but they do not address the conscious and unconscious division as basic because they hold that inaccessible unconscious contains elements which have never been repressed but which are simply not yet understood and are unconsciously assumed in the endeavor to adapt socially and to overcome supposed or real weakness. The individual’s aspiration or unconscious need to realize a potential unity is part of a collective unconscious, which is not a group mind, but the deepest level in the individual mind, consisting of potentialities for ways of thinking shared by all people because their genetic constitutions are closely similar and their family and social experiences share certain universal features. In a given society, the collective unconscious contains particular traditional symbols or archetypes which organize thought and action. #RandolphHarris 13 of 19
This sociological concept of the deeper mental levels involves a historical background in which ritual, myth, symbol, and religious attitude play organizing and integrating roles that contribute to the strength and stability of the psyche and that are subject to an underlying tendency developing a differentiated unity in the person (individuation). The tension of superficially opposed aspects in the unconscious mind produces autonomous foci of energy, acting as complexes. The ultimate aim is not discovery of truth, but the acceptance of the role of deep psychology in the present historical situation: assistance in the search for life-enhancing significance in the fate of living in a scientific age at a time when traditional sources of strength have been weakened but a fully comprehensive scientific truth is not yet insight. These are discursive communication of attitudes, rather than being steps toward an ultimately confirmable theory of unconscious mental process. There are some other things that one may need to considered, which is not covered in the textbook. #RandolphHarris 14 of 19
What if a person is truly haunted, being stalked by a group of people, or being terrorized by a rogue group of people who want to end his life. If a person sat down in the office and conveyed what was going on, that person would likely be diagnosed with a mental disorder and hospitalized and placed on medication. However, to really figure out what is going on with an individual, you would have to spend time with that person to see if that individual was really in danger or it was just their imagination. By the time anyone can truly see what is going on, and if it is real, this danger would be widespread and would have persisted for years and an individual would have likely been terrorized and suffered serious injuries, but knowing how it would sound to others and the consequences would keep it to oneself. Furthermore, if the situation get so out of control that it is unclear if the individual is a victim of terrorism, and as a result has started to manifest unusual things in their lives, by that time a person has probably lost their soul and life is just a duty to God. #RandolphHarris 15 of 19
It seems that no important basic advance has been made in the theoretical understanding of the unconscious mind. Certainly no one has yet made a satisfactory synthesis of the reliable features of their views. Thus, there has been a pause in the advance of the theory of subjective deep psychology. Assistance from the neurophysiology might help to determine what is going on. Because it could be that an individual is being terrorized and people are trying to make it seem that the mind is manifesting a particular paranormal activity or it is a conspiracy to make an individual believe they are a different type of being, or it could be a little of both. I have done research on the individual and medications were administered, psychotropic drugs, and the individual was encouraged to overdose after being told that he is responsible for people attacking him and that it was all in his mind and that if he took more medication, it would stop. As a result the patient did overdose on three or four occasions, was taken to the emergency room, and even spent years drinking wine to pass out to escape the problems. #RandolphHarris 16 of 19
Some might assume that the individual is an alcoholic or a drug attic, but the issues the patient was facing in society because so pervasive that it is hard not to notice that this individual is haunted and or the victim of terrorism. It is sad when an individual is in danger and has no one to turn to and even turns to reckless means just to stay alive until someone can come up with a rational solution as to how to solve the problem. The good news is the individual has stopped drinking and takes no medication and has resulted to spending hours every day praying, but there have been changes such as trust issues, and other things. He just seems to be floating by, through life, alone, on a wing and a prayer. It should be noted that the individual has also been treated for some very serious physical injuries, which would indicate some form of abuse is taking place. We should now consider what the unconscious has stood for in the minds of different groups. The mystics saw it as the link with God; the Christians Platonists as a divine creative principle; the romantics as the connection between the individual and universal powers. #RandolphHarris 17 of 19
The early rationalist as a factor operating in memory, perception and ideas; the postromantic as organic vitality expressed in will, imagination, and creation; dissociated Western people as a realm of violence threatening his stability; physical scientists as the expression of physiological processes in the brain which are not yet understood; monistic thinkers as the prime mover and source of all order and novelty in through and actions. Perhaps a melee of inhibited memories and desires the main influence of which is damaging; or a prerational realm of instincts, myths, and symbols often making for stability. It is natural to seek a common principle underlying these partial truths, but we do not possess the unified language in which to express it scientifically. There is something going on, and it is being allowed to happen. The formulation of a valid theory of the integrated human mind and of its various pathologies would imply the possibility of a transformation in the man and his unconscious toward a more harmonious condition accompanied by the development of a social order that does not bring with it inescapable neurosis. #RandolphHarris 18 of 19
This may seem a distant hope, however, recent advances in biology and medicine have opened new vistas of improvement, and no survey of the idea of the unconscious would be complete without a glance into this possible future for theory and practice, for therein may life the deepest reason for the fascination which the idea has for so wide a public. This sketch of the idea of the unconscious has neglected its recent application to religion, art, the history of science, philosophy, literature (reality of experience lies in the unconscious), ethics and justice. In all these realms, the main effect has been to broaden, deepen, and loosen traditional conceptions. However, the unification of scientific principles, so badly needed today, still lies ahead. In this an improved conception of the unconscious must play a crucial role. Start moving forward and enlarge your vision. What God has in store for you will allow grow, move forward, increase, and constantly break the barriers of the past and advance in God’s Kingdom. #RandolphHarris 19 of 19
