Presumably the World is comparable with a single throw of the dice. And common nonsense is not foolish in suspecting the dice have been loaded. Reason was the first revelation; and so far it tests all other, it has precedence over them. Deliver yourself by permit of your cheque on the Bank of Reason, and your account is increased instead of lessened. The whole of nature is animated and endowed with sensation in varying degrees. In addition to the vital principle there is present in humans and animals spirit, a very subtle material substance that emanates from the warm element and is generated with the body. Spirit is properly located in the brain and has the function of anticipating and receiving sense impressions. It has both an appetitive power and an intellective power of its own that correspond to the sensitive appetite and the cogitative power (vis cogitative). Besides body and spirit, humans have mens, or anima superaddita, which is created by God and informs both body and spirit. Apart from the natural drive or instinct of self-preservation, which all beings—including inorganic matter–humans can strive after the union with God and contemplate with the divine. This inner tendency of the mens, along with the need for proper sanctions in a future life in order to correct injustices, is considered to prove the immortality of the soul, which is known by revelation but can also be demonstrated by reason. Self-preservation is human’s supreme good. Just as in humans there is a twofold intellect, one pertaining to the spirit and the other to the soul, so also there is in people a twofold appetite power. The sensitive appetite tends toward temporal goods and its own preservation in this life; rational appetite or will tends toward immortal goods and its own preservation in a future goods and its own preservation in a future, eternal life. When I turn to God and by belief accept what God reveals, the miraculous atonement by the Cross of Christ instantly places me into a right relationship with God. Virtues and powers or faculties that enable humans to achieve self-preservation; they are not merely habits. There are virtues of the spirit and virtues of the soul. Among the virtues, sublimity and wisdom occupy a high place. Sublimity is not merely a particular virtue but virtue as a whole. It stands at the summit of all virtues and somehow includes all of the, for it directs all human operations toward their supreme good. Wisdom helps humans to attain to the knowledge of God as creator of the Universe and can reach out to the knowledge of the divine substance itself. An immovable mover sets the Heavens in motion. The existence of God is better proved from the wonderful order of the Universe, which can only be the work of a divine mind. The nature or the World is a concrete reality. The one great challenge to us is—do I know my risen Lord? Do I know the power of His Indwelling Spirit? And I wise enough in God’s sight, but foolish enough according to the wisdom of the World, to trust in what Jesus Christ has said? #RandolphHarris 3 of 5

Why has a Universe of matter produced life and intelligence? If there are millions of Universes, we might expect this to happen in a few of them. Nature produces in great abundance beauty which seems to exist only for the enjoyment of humans. Nature’s beauty is of a piece with the World’s intelligibility and with its being a theatre for moral life; and thus far the case for theism is strengthened by aesthetic considerations. Nature has produced humans, with God’s ethical sense. If we judge the evolutionary process not by its roots in the primeval slime but by its fruits in human moral and spiritual experience, we note that the whole process of Nature is capable of being regarded as instrumental to the development of intelligent and moral creatures. Be careful that you vigorously maintain God’s perspective, and remember that is must be done every day. Do not think on a finite level. No outside power can touch the proper perspective. The possibility of the moral evil of sin was involved in the creation of free and responsible personal beings and is justified by the fact that only free person can be the bearers of moral and spiritual values. The natural evil of pain in its many forms is a necessary concomitant of human existence in a World which has its own stable structure and laws of operation; and it is justified by the fact that only in such an environment can the higher values of the human personality develop. People are supposed to be intellectually respectable. The only way is by allowing nothing of the old life to remain and by having only simple, perfect trust in God—such a trust that we no longer want God’s blessing but only want God himself. The Spirit of God Himself bears witness with our spirit. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he or she is a new creation; old things have passed away. And as a result of the supernatural miracle of God’s grace, I have learned that God is not as interested in changing my circumstances as He is in changing me.
