Every moment the fetters of reality cut the sharpest welts in my flesh. However, my own I remain. Religion seems to be losing ground among intelligent people, because after such people begun to disbelieve the existence of the Devil, the next step was to doubt the reality of God. That is why passionate anti-intellectualism stresses the will and the instincts as opposed to reason. At the center of this vision is the human individual, of whom alone we can have certain knowledge; each individual is unique, and this uniqueness is the very quality one must cultivate to give meaning to one’s life. If you believe in both God and a Devil, you can thank God for all the good things in the World and then blame the Devil for all the negative aspects of reality. However, once the Devil is dismissed, God becomes responsible for all the blessings in the World and all of the evil. Good is virtuous only because there is evil, and God is the Most High because there is a Devil. As evil is not mere negation, so the figure of Satan in religion is not mere idle fantasy. #RandolphHarris 1 of 9
Feeling does not stay to calculate with weights and a balance the importance and magnitude of every object that excites it; it flows impetuously from the heart, without consulting the cooler responses of the understanding. According to the account in the second chapter of Genesis in the Holy Bible, Satan (the Devil) is the father of science, for h introduced Eve to make Adam taste of the fruit of knowledge, and people worshipped the serpent for that reason. Revolution, in overthrowing an established order, seeks to create another order; it implies a faith in institutions. Rebellion is the action of individuals seeking to rise above the condition they reject; it demands that one rise, or exalt oneself. Revolution is a social or political act; rebellion is an individual act, and therefore appropriate to the egoist. If rebellion prospers, the state will collapse. In rebellion, the use of force is inevitable and is the war of each against all, in which the egoist fights with all the means at one’s command. Crime is the assertion of the ego, the rejection of the sacred. The aim of egoist rebellion is the free wielding of power by each individual. #RandolphHarris 2 of 9
The end of this process is not conflict, but a kind of dynamic balance of power between people aware of their own might, for the true person realizes that excessive possessions and power are merely limitations on one’s own uniqueness. This assertion is based on the absence of submissiveness in others; the withdrawal of each individual into one’s uniqueness lessens rather than increases the chance of conflict, for as unique you have nothing in common with the other any longer, and therefore nothing divisive or hostile either. If we are truly surrendered, we will never be aware of our own efforts to remain surrendered. Beware of talking about surrender if you know nothing about it. In fact, you will never know anything about it until you understand that John 3.16 means that God completely and absolutely gave Himself to us. In our surrender, we must give ourselves to God in the same way He gave Himself for us—totally, unconditionally, and without reservation. Art thou to put a bound to the divine will, and to say, thus much I will bear, and no more? #RandolphHarris 3 of 9
The discipline of suffering heart is an essential lesion that a child of God must learn. The danger is that we tend to look back on our times of obedience and on our past sacrifices to God in an effort to keep our enthusiasm for Him strong. However, when the darkness of dismay comes, endure until it is over, because out of it will come the ability to follow Jesus Christ, which brings inexpressibly wonderful joy. There is certainty that our own personal needs will be met; therefore, there is a shift in relationship so that the focus is on the welfare and happiness of others. This is facilitated by the fact that, at this level, there is no longer neediness in the dependency on other people, because there is nothing we feel we need to get from them. In a relationship of loving acceptance, minor imperfections are no longer given serious importance and are overlooked. In acceptance, there is a decreased preoccupation with state of action and one has a growing focus on the quality of existence itself, and the perfection of our own inner capacity for caring and loving. #RandolphHarris 4 of 9
Energy is perhaps of all qualities the most valuable. Even the weakest saint can experience the power of the deity of the Son of God when one is willing to let go. However, any effort to hang on to the least bit of our own power will only diminish the life of Jesus Christ in us. We have to keep letting go, and slowly but surely the great full life of God will invade us, penetrating every part. Then Jesus Christ will have complete and effective dominion in us, and people will take notice that we have been with Him. Although negative feelings may still arise, you will see that your burden is then lightened by the sense of companionship. It is definitely a crime for a Christian to be weak in God’s strength. The World is seen to be harmonious, and any alteration of that appearance is realized to be a projection of the highest potential of human mind and spirit. What becomes increasingly important to us is what we are becoming, not what we have to do. God wants you to be entirely His, and it requires paying close attention to keep yourself fit. #RandolphHarris 5 of 9
While you have the light, believe in the light. In acceptance, we are free to be in the present. Once we have accepted our own nature and the ways of the Universe as they are reflected in our World, there is no longer regret about the past, nor is there fear for the future. Fear of the future no longer exists when the past is healed. This is because in the usual ego-oriented state of consciousness, the ego tens to project the past upon the future, and a past that is viewed negatively becomes fearful when projected upon the imaginary future. Our letting go of the lower energies of guilt, fear, anger, and pride has alleviated the weight of the past and cleared the clouds of the future. We face today with optimism and are grateful to be alive. We see that yesterday is in the past, and tomorrow has not come yet, and we have only this moment. This state of consciousness allows us to find freedom from most of life’s problems and to experience fulfillment and happiness. We must bring our everyday life up to the standard revealed to us by our potential. #RandolphHarris 6 of 9
People who are gloomy and austerity, who pain the face of Infinite Benevolence with an eternal frown; read in the Everlasting Book, wide open to your view, the lesson it would teach. In the glossomorphy of thought, we are warned against the dangerous consequences that flow from confusing forms of speech with forms of thought. Not only do we make use of language to fix our thought and to communicate our knowledge; we also think in our language, so that the structure of our thought reflects the logical forms of our language. When the course of thought becomes automatic, the result may be that the self-critical thought is replaces by an idle flow of speech (glossurgy). We must be opposed to the misuse of language and unmask the muddled thinking that gives rise to the reification of concepts, metaphors, and allegories. Because our language compels us to designate consciousness as if it were constructed of a subject, of mental acts and of physical objects. #RandolphHarris 7 of 9
We must never measure our spiritual capacity on the basis of our education or our intellect; our capacity in spiritual things is measured on the basis of the promises of God. Never allow the limitation of your own natural ability to enter into the matter. If we have received the Holy Spirit, God expects the work of the Holy Spirit to be exhibited in us. Never forget that our capacity and capability in spiritual matters is measured by, and based on, the promises of God. One can only have faith in the existence of something beyond experience. This metaphysical faith is the expression of a subjective reaction of the heart and is lived. Knowledge cannot engender faith, and faith cannot substitute for knowledge; for the two are an entirely different nature. Everyone proceeds along that path of faith which one’s constitution obliges one to take. There is neither an inductive nor a deductive proof for or against faith. I have to get to the point of the absolute and unquestionable relationship that takes everything exactly as it comes from God. #RandolphHarris 8 of 9
Anyone who is unable to find the meaning of life in life itself, in the work and tasks of life, and therefore suffers in being alive, seeks that meaning beyond the World and life. God never guides us at some time in the future, but always here and now. Realize that the Lord is here now, and the freedom you receive is immediate. I am only playing with these ideas. I do not say that this is the way things are. I do not even say that this is the way they probably are. All that I say is that this is the way they may be. We must have inward self-control and useful citizenship in the cosmopolis that is the Universe. God is a rational spirit having no shape, but making itself into all things. If there exists something greater than human reasoning being that is great than man and woman, of God. There is creative force that is to be identified by God. Why could not the structure of the Universe could not just emerge from the ordinary course of things? Only a providential God could produce such beauty, such interlocking purposes as the Universe reveals. Imperfections of detail are essential to perfection of the whole, like darkness in a picture. #RandolphHarris 9 of 9
