The Candle Durst Not Oppose the Sun

I lost the World the other day. Has anybody found? You will know it by the row of stars around its forehead bound. A rich man might not notice it; yet to my frugal eye of more esteem than ducats. Oh, find it, sir, for me! The word “civilization” was derived from an actual social condition, that social, intellectual, and artistic sense is a metaphorical term derived from the act of cultivating the soil. In the case of “civilization” there was an apparently simple contrast with “barbarism,” another social condition, which was originally a description of the life of a foreign group. In the case of “culture” there was no such simple contrast. The cultivation of the mind was seen as a process comparable to the cultivation of the soil; hence, the early meanings of “culture,” in this metaphorical sense, centered on a process, the culture of the mind, rather an on an achieved state. The first important development from this metaphorical use of culture was description of certain people as cultivated and then those who are cultivated. In this use the meaning is very close to civilized. #RandolphHarris 1 of 11

A perfectly civilized state is just respect for property: a state in which no one takes wrongfully what belongs to another. Culture came to mean a general state or habit of the mind, with close relations to the idea of human perfection. Second, it came to mean a general state of intellectual and moral development in a society as a whole. Third, it came to mean, the general body of the arts and intellectual work. Fourth, it came to mean the whole way of life, material, intellectual, and spiritual, of a given society. Basically, civilization of general humanity and an external civilization is a progress calculated by reference to things other than humankind. It is part of a romantic movement, in describing intellectual and social phenomena, and has a high valuation of folk life and national tradition. This was not only a contrast with what was often seen as a merely sophisticated civilization, but also an emphasis on the particular distinctive customs and arts of different people—what would later be called their national cultures, as distinct from what was still seen as the general and uniform development of civilization. #RandolphHarris 2 of 11

Culture is here seen as a process and a state of cultivation that should be a Universal idea. A new study has suggested that belief in all-powerful Gods is absolutely vital for the development of civilization. Archaeologist have found that large ceremonial monuments, such as the monuments in Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Rome, and the Castle and Greek statues at the Capitol Castle in Sacramento, California USA, Hearst Castle built by William Randolph Hearst with, the Winchester Mansion built by Sarah and William Winchester, along with Stone Hinge, and the buried megaliths at Gobekli tepe, in Turkey and the Catacombs in Paris, France seem to preceded big farming communities, and must have been built by communities working together under one belief system. Religious people have proven that they are likely to be more cooperative because they sense the watchful eyes of an all-powerful deity monitoring their actions. A large part of the success of humanity lies in the hands of Gods. The idea that moralistic, punitive, all-knowing Gods may play a significant role in seeing individuals cooperate peacefully with wider social circles.  #RandolphHarris 3 of 11

This usage of culture is ethical and, indeed, spiritual and expressed an ideal of human perfection. It can easily conflict with the emphasis on particular cultures, which stresses the differences in the ways in which humans find meaning and value in their lives and, indeed, conceive of perfection itself. In the modern World, we rely on government’s courts and the police and highway patrol and federal agents to deter and punish those who would otherwise undermine social coordination. However, how did human societies achieve and sustain cooperation before these institutes existed? One possibility is religion. They found the higher individuals rated their Gods as being moralistic, knowledgeable and punishing, the more likely they were to behave, act civilized, and share their religious beliefs with others. Under the watchful gaze of supernatural agents, people modified their behaviour in an effort to avoid the wrath of God. The belief in rewards from the God could not account for the results. #RandolphHarris 4 of 11

This latter emphasis, now widespread in anthropology and sociology, is necessarily relative and comparative, whereas the surviving idealist emphasis tends to be absolute and is most commonly associated with the classical and Christian heritage of Europe. It is more likely that a belief in divine retribution or supernatural punishment may have fostered a good behaviour which promoted trust, cooperation and fairness in dealing with others. Over time these deities spread culturally and came to dominate the World religions, and as traditions grew, they accounted for a large proportion of the World’s population. Actual artistic and intellectual work often fails to conform to the idea of a perfect or perfecting state of mind already associated with known, traditional meanings and values. Through sharing belief and standards of behaviour, commitments to the same Gods meant followers living in different, distant places had similar expectations about how to behave with others. They refer to what people do and think, without regard to any artistic or intellectual merit. #RandolphHarris 5 of 11

In any case these uses of culture include elements of social and economic life (especially institutions) that do not seem to be cultured in the artistic, religious, and intellectual sense at all. There is, an important controversy within anthropology and sociology concerning the concept of culture. Many people now believe as long as you are rich or having high paying jobs that it is okay to steal from and abuse others, especially vulnerable populations like seniors, disabled, women, children, and poor men. And these same people who worship money and status think it is okay to condemn all others. And, indeed, the idea of culture raises many of the fundamental issues of Western civilization and has become a major point of division between idealist and historical methods in intellectual and artistic criticism. It has also been a focus of the attempt to see societies as wholes, in new ways and with new interest in their various aspects. In this respect, the emphasis on culture has been an attempt to redefine the nature of society and of civilization. #RandolphHarris 6 of 11

Our findings suggest the threat of punishment from a God if that individual did not reach out to help strangers may have been one of the reasons for the close bounds that developed between different communities across the World. However, since the new colosseum has been built in Sacramento, for the Basketball players, called “The Golden 1 Center,” we have seen the culture in Sacramento, California USA change. The new sports complex cost nearly $600,000,000.00 USD. More than 50 percent of it was funded by public money, which the public was not allowed to have a say in. And the rents and taxes and fees the people are now paying have gone up significantly. Rents in Sacramento, California has increased 25 percent since 2012, which is an increase of $500.00 a month. A person with a minimum wage job would have to work 89 hours to afford an apartment in the county of Sacramento. City leaders and the media have become greedy public figures, who no longer represent the people of Sacramento, nor their best interest. To many social thinkers, this primacy of the organization of material life is not acceptable. #RandolphHarris 7 of 11

Sacramento used to be a peaceful and sleepy little village Austrian village. People now worship this new sports colosseum like they have gold fever or something, meanwhile many small businesses are being forced to closed because of increasing rents and people are being priced out of their houses. The prefixed praise of the new sporting complex by city leaders and the media, who all seem to be in cahoots, is somewhat misleading, since the praise of reason which it contains has been followed by limitations on the general public. In this new culture, Satan is the hero and God has become the villain. And people who wish to live their lives in accordance to God’s law are often looked upon as a threat to a society of corruption and greed. Many do not see the beneficial influence of religion on culture and civilization. Western culture is unthinkable without Christianity. Dedication to God has motivated believers to contribute to education, healthcare, good citizenship, equal rights for women and men, all ethnic backgrounds, and sexual preferences, and is what many see as characteristics of a civilized society. #RandolphHarris 8 of 11

Most of us are not consistent spiritually because we are more concerned about being consistent externally. In the external expression of things, Paul lived in the basement, while his critics lived on the upper level. And these two levels do not begin to touch each other. However, Paul’s consistency was down deep in the fundamentals. The great basis of his consistency was the agony of God in the redemption of the World, namely, the Cross of Christ. Pay attention to the external Source and the internal power will be there. We lose power because we do not focus on the right thing. Concentrate on God’s focal point. We have to focus on the great point of spiritual power—the cross. If we stay in contact with that center of power, its energy is released in our lives. We must never allow anything to interfere with the consecration of our spiritual power. Consecration (being dedicated to God’s service) is our part; sanctification (being set apart from sin and being made holy) is God’s part. We must make a deliberate determination to be interested only in what God is interested. The way to make that determination is to ask yourself, “Is this the kind of thing in which Jesus Christ is interested?” #RandolphHarris 9 of 11

The greatest spiritual blessing we receive is when we come to the knowledge that we are destitute. Until we get there, our Lord is powerless. He can do nothing for us as long as we think we are sufficient in ourselves. We must enter into God’s kingdom through the door of destitution. As long as we are “rich,” particularly in the area of pride or independence, God can do nothing for us. Self-awareness depends entirely on the remembering function of the human brain. The control exerted by the central organ over the organs of the body is applied not only to dreams, but also to the phenomenon of genius. In sleep, control is relaxed and anarchy reigns. A random recall in the central organ may then be reversed, from organ to brain. In dreams, random combination may be formed and dragons created. Only personal past experience is available, however, for such imaginings. The one impossible dream is that the dreamer is someone else. Strong emotions are the chief source of the good, the true, and the beautiful. #RandolphHarris 10 of 11

The great actor, with complete command of one’s emotions, makes their audience laugh or weep by coolly calculated gestures and intonation; one must register the emotions, but not feel them at the same time. The dominating control by the center produced wise and good people, but that genius is the result of the strongest emotions under almost complete control. Genius is not a mere talent produced by education and chance, but a psychophysiological phenomenon, and in that respect akin, when central control is lost, to madness. The proper perspective of a servant of God must not simply be as near to the highest as on can get, but it must be the highest. Be careful that you vigorously maintain God’s perspective, and remember that it must be done every day, little by little. Do not think on a finite level. No outside power can touch the proper perspective. All of God’s people are ordinary people who have been made extraordinary by the purpose God has given them. Unless we have the right purpose intellectually in our minds and lovingly in our hearts, we will quickly be diverted from being useful to God. #RandolphHarris 11 of 11
