That pride of individualism that is half the fascination of sin. The intellect directly grasps the individual, only reaching the Universal by reflection. This is does by means of the active intellect, which directed the imaginative faculty to a true understanding of the object encountered. Information obtained in psychoanalysis concludes that dreams repeat impressions of our childhood—they refer to games involving movement which have such some extraordinary attractions for children. Where is the father who has never made a child fly by running with it across the room, with outstretched arms, or has never played at falling with it by rocking it on his knee and then suddenly straightening his leg, or by lifting the child above his head and suddenly pretending to withdraw his supporting hand? At such moments children shout with joy and insatiably demand a repetition of the performance, especially if a little fright and dizziness are involved in it. In after years they repeat their sensations in dreams, but in dreams they omit the hands that held them, so that they are free to float or fall. #RandolphHarris 1 of 8

We know that all small children have a fondness for such games as rocking and see-sawing; and when they see gymnastic performances at the circus their recollection of such games is refreshed. In some boys they hysterical attack consists simply in the reproduction of such performances, which they accomplish with great dexterity. Not infrequently sexual sensations are excited by these games of movement, innocent through they are in themselves. To express the matter in a few words: it is these romping games of childhood which are being repeated in dreams of flying, falling, vertigo, and the like, but pleasurable sensations are now transformed into anxiety. However, as every mother knows, the romping of children often ends in quarrelling tears. I have therefore good reason for rejecting the explanation that it is the condition of our cutaneous sensations during sleep, the sensation of movements of the lungs, etcetera, that evoke dreams of flying and falling. As I see it, these sensations have themselves been reproduced from the memory to which the dream refers—that they are therefore dream-content, and not dream-sources. #RandolphHarris 2 of 8

The same assumption of the reality of Universal categories is apparent in many-sided scientific activity. The intensification and remission of forms takes place by means of latitudo, or variation, in the species of the existing form (heat, cold) could not itself by modified, the subject is which it inhered (water, for example) could take on new forms of the same species which were more or less perfect. According to the degree of this variation, intensification or remission followed. This is not an isolated hypothesis. It was derived from the analogy of movement. Here, in adherence to this traditional mode of thinking, the doctrine of the impetus is rejected. The impetus is supposed to be the source of movement in that which is moving and instead it is held that in each movement, a new place (ubi), a new terminus, and a new form is engendered, each displacing the previous one. This material, consisting of sensations of motion, similar in character, and originating from the same sources, is now used for the representation of the most manifold dream-thoughts. Principles are not always the only means of rendering people capable to face every storm of life with tranquility. #RandolphHarris 3 of 8

Dreams of falling are more frequently characterized by anxiety. Their interpretation, when they occur in women, offers no difficulty, because they nearly always accept the symbolic meaning of falling, which is a circumlocution for giving way to an erotic temptation. We have not yet exhausted the infantile sources of the dream of falling; nearly all children have fallen occasionally, and then been picked up and fondled; if they fell out of bed at night, they were picked up by the nurse and taken into her bed. People who dream often, and with great enjoyment, of swimming, cleaving the ways, excreta, have usually been bed-wetters, and they now repeat in the dream a pleasure which they have long since learned to forgo. So, whenever you experience the undertow, the drag of dependency in another, examine closely who is doing what work in the relationship. Whenever you find you are feeling too supportive or too directive or too exploitative, you may be certain you have taken over too large a share of the load. Even more, under such circumstances you are doing what you can not do: namely, express the uniqueness of another’s life experience. #RandolphHarris 4 of 8

Each person has one’s own proper burden of being to bear. Dreams of passing through narrow alleys, or a whole suite of rooms; dreams of burglars, in respect of whom nervous people take measures of precaution before going to bed; dreams of being chased by wild animals (bulls, horses); or of being threatened with knives, daggers, and lances—the last two themes are characteristic of the manifest dream content of persons suffering from anxiety, excreta. Because of the exaggerated intensity of the dependent responses, we may find ourselves provoked into reacting in certain ways. We feel an obligation to care about the other. We know the demand to dominate the other. We sense the pressure to exploit the other. We find ourselves trapped in a box of logical illogicalness. The harder the ball of behavior is thrown at us and the closer to the edge of the circle of responses it originates, the more difficult to stop or deflect it. The dependent person narrows his or her actions in such an aggressive way that the World around is trained to take over. Remember principle: no expediency, no compromise. #RandolphHarris 5 of 8

Dissonance can come from different conflict. Living in two place, being part of two cultures, and social alienation are just some possible sources. This alienation is often reflected in another, more ordinary estrangement, the social displacement which occurs. In the unlucky, social displacement leads to maladjustment and to art that whimpers or snarls. In the lucky, it leads to a healthy doubling of vision, the healthy alternative to disorientation and emotional insecurity, the anxiety and ambivalence of the neurotic. Since it does not matter to you it will be done this way. In other words, we respond from a position of strength that frees the other without dominating or destroying the other. The attitude tends toward the matter-of-fact: This is it—do you what you want, I cannot change the way things are. However, the right way to sidestep the hanging-on parasite and to right the balance is to encourage: I am not certain about this, what ideas do you have that we might try? Come on, put your mind to work; you have got good idea when you give yourself a chance; what kind of things come to mind. #RandolphHarris 6 of 8

When we respond from a position of strong support that inspires the other without belittling or browbeating him or her, the attitude tends to produce active friendliness, reaching out without taking over, close without smothering. The corresponding and complementary responses are maintained but without their exaggerations. One is friendly and supportive appropriately. True intercession involves bringing the person, or circumstance that seems to be crashing in on you, before God until you are changed by God’s attitude toward that person or circumstance. People describe intercession by saying it is putting yourself in someone else’ place. That is not true! Intercession is putting yourself in God’s place; it is having God’s mind and God’s perspective. Our attitude must be one of complete reliance on God. Once we get to that point, there is nothing easier than living the life of a saint. We encounter difficulties when we try to usurp the authority of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps no surer test of high principles, as it is certain no more accurate test of high breeding can be found, than a distaste for injurious gossip. #RandolphHarris 7 of 8

Any problem that comes while I obey God increases my delight, because I know that my Father knows and cars, and I can watch and anticipate how God will unravel my problems. We seek to pull behavior patterns away from the lopsided outer ring of the behavioral circle and to move them closer toward the functioning center. We find, in the end, that all of us have times when we need and want to be close and taken care of by others. We appeal to love from others. We all have times when we need and want to be left alone and not bothered by others. We appeal to freedom for ourselves. We all have times when we need and want to be critical and skeptical about what is going on. We appeal to proper anger against what is happening. Such balancing fosters more fully functioning persons. If you cannot express yourself well on each of your beliefs, work and study until you can. Try to state to yourself what you believe to be and the absolute truth of God, and you will be allowing God the opportunity to pass it on through you to someone else. Always make it a practice to stir your own mind thoroughly to think through what you have easily believed. Peace I leave you with, my peace I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled. #RandolphHarris 8 of 8
