There are situations in which it is as difficult to go back as to go forward. In battles, there ought to be a doubtful fight and desperate end; in pleading a difficult entrance and a diffused determination; in love a life without hope and a death without fear. The problem of action and of its meaning must have a beneficial solution. This solution is to be sought by means of a kind of phenomenology of action, through a phenomenology that is meant to show that we must pass beyond the phenomena to the discovery of the supraphenomenal. It is natural for people, when they set their hearts upon anything, to think everybody must see with their eyes. Even Caesar’s fortune at one time was but a grand presentiment. We know what a masquerade all development is, and what effective shapes may be disguised in helpless embryos. The World is full of hopeful analogies and handsome dubious eggs called possibilities. Does the difference of the time of day at Paris make a difference in the sin? It makes a difference, it is said, in the scandal. The basis of the dialectic is the gap between action and its realization. One cannot in one’s actions equal what one demands, and so there is in life a permanent dissatisfaction set up by the contrast between action and the realization at which it aims. This impels people to further action, and in the effort to close the gap, we have to visualize the expansion of action in terms of an ever wider outreach. It is unwise to look back when the journey leith forward. Self-regarding action passes over into various forms of social action, and these in turn come to their limit in the highest type of moral action—that which aims at the good of all humankind. It would be taking up the pen of eternity were we to attempt to describe the boundless difference that we discovered between the manners and sentiments of these people and ourselves. Even in the good weather there are bad roads. However, although this process partially overcomes the contrast between action and its realization, it never does so completely, and the gap reappears at each stage. There is no immanent solution to the problem of actions. In all human institutions, a smaller evil is allowed to procure a greater good. This is no small endeavor, again and again uprooting us until we stand truer ground, calling out our essential potential—our soul-centered warriorhood—without any abandoning of our sensitivity and empathy and innocence. Aligning ourselves with the imperatives of this call, this deepest of invitations, is an immeasurably rewarding adventure, bringing our total being out into the open, making the richest, most life-giving kind of relationship more than possible. This is essentially a philosophy of grace. God is immanent within humans, in the sense that human action is already directed beyond the phenomenal order. Humans reap only the harvest they have sown in the World. Even in this life, God is just. Yet this quest for realization would be a frustrating one were it not that God in turn moves toward us in his transcendence, and human action is supported and supplemented by divine grace. Since action is concrete, the beliefs that arise out of action and the experience of acting are not abstract formulations. It is in action that we apprehend God, but if we try to imprison him in a proposition or prove his existence by a logical demonstration, he escapes us. God implants in the heart of his people a desire to advance his ends, but human agents are compelled to employ natural means. Human folly is not needed to fill up the great design of God. There is no stature, no beauty, no proportions, nor any colours in which humans themselves can well be fashioned, that is not already done to our hands. Action is no blind drive, but always includes thought; thought can attain its philosophical goals only as it remains closely association with actions.  #RandolphHarris 4 of 5

The true peace of God begins at any spot a thousand miles from the nearest land. It is a Godlike power to confer benefits rather than to be obliged to receive them. Each of us is the constant center of a group of breathless listeners; each recognized that we know now for the first time the real meaning of that great word Glory, and perceived the stupendous value of it, and understood why people in all ages had been willing to throw away meaner happinesses, treasure, life to get a taste of its sublime and supreme joy. Thus, in this later phase, when we reconsider the rational proofs of theism, these proofs are possible only on the basis of a prior affirmation of God that has arisen out of our experience as active beings. When you would conceive of that great Being truly and fully, you must be able to realize the duration of eternity, obliterate the little periods of time and chronology, which require a starting and resting-place in our human minds—soar out of the reach of the sickly atmospheres which surround these little planets, and stand erect in the broad and fathomless light of God’s own atmosphere. #RandolphHarris 5 of 5
