All human events are under the immediate direction of an over-ruling providence. The relations between subject, object, reality, and possibility are complex. The nature of the real is a tendency toward, or anticipation of, the future, and thus its reality is the reality of something in the future. However, the future is already real as objectivity possibility. Everything that is, is possible. We distinguish between objective possibility, which (because the object as object is not real (is merely theoretical, and real possibility, which is practically connected with the future. What is really possible is concretely connected with utopia. There is no way of joining the past with the present, and there is no difference between what is a moment past and what is eternally past. Reality always contains elements of possible change, possibilities not yet actually existing. Utopias are concerned with these possibilities and thus have an essential function in human consciousness. On the other hand, these possibilities must have a foundation in the object because thought can be represent in imagination infinitely many possible objects in infinitely many relationships. #RandolphHarris 1 of 5
If an event were completely conditioned, it would be unconditionally certain. Therefore, what can possibly come into existence is possible only insofar as it is not conditioned. What us objectively possible, therefore, is only insofar as it is not constrained by predetermined conditions. We distinguish between two senses of objective possibility. One sense concerns the thing and is the thing’s behavior, or the appearance of the thing as an object of knowledge. The other sense concerns our knowledge of the thing. The objectivity (Saclichkeit) of the thing concerns only our knowledge of it, while its factuality (Sachhafitgkeit) concerns only the object of knowledge. Knowledge by theory only is a vague uncertain light: a will-o’-the-wisp, which as often misleads the doubting mind as puts it right. If nothing counteracts the natural consequence of learning, we grow more happy as our minds take a wider range. I seldom care to be consistent. In a philosophical view, consistency is a certain level at all times, maintained in all the thoughts of one’s mind. However, since nature is nearly all hill and dale, how can one keep naturally advancing in knowledge without submitting to the natural inequalities in the progress? #RandolphHarris 2 of 5
We have all much to learn: let us try and teach one another as kindly as we can. I have heard famous scholars often and often say very silly things; but I thought they did it out of humility, and in condescension to those who had not their learning. Historical changes arise out of precise historical socioeconomic conditions, and physical movement arises out of contradiction, the clash of opposites. The primordial hunger becomes a motive force (agens). Matter is not predetermined, since it has the capacity not only to express itself in existence but also to do so in forms that are always new. Nevertheless, the teleological doctrine of a final goal for the entire World process is not an extension of a psychological category or historical principle to nature. Rather, it is the cosmic unity of the subject process and object process when being finally becomes thinking and thinking finally becomes being. Nothing is more flattering to the pride and the hopes of humans than the belief in a future state. The historical process of society is thus related to the World process and ultimately to matter. Thus, we identify dialectical matter with real possibility. #RandolphHarris 3 of 5
The reconciliation of subject and object comes through utopia. In utopia, romantic Sehnsucht—the nostalgic regret that our dream of rationally conquering the World is blocked by a limit that we try unceasingly but perhaps vainly to overcome—is untied with messianic expectancy. Utopia foresees the kingdom of the children of God, the kingdom of freedom in which the exploitation of human by human ceases. At this time will come that unification, the identification of subject and object, which many have forecast. One of the best ways to turn on to living is to develop meaningful friendships. Friendships are sought by each of us because we are gregarious, or social, beings. Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. It is my belief that the only power which can resist the power of fear is the power of love. Great knowledge of the World, or, what is often mistake for it, an acquaintance with the higher circles and with the topics of the day. #RandolphHarris 4 of 5
The secret of a creative or artistic life with other people is to be fully present with them. There are some rare and choice souls with whom you feel fully yourself. You feel fully yourself because you can be fully yourself. You know they understand you and accept you as you are, weak and strong, silly and wise—all those mixed-up traits that uniquely make you. It is these same people who make you feel alive who can make a group come to life. And for the same reason—they are actively creative in their relations with other people. They are creative because they are wholly present with other people. Thus, a person having a wide range of interest will, while pursuing each of these interest, meet people who share at least that particular interest. In this manner, then, people meet and, if their personalities do not clash, become friends and pursue the interest together. You always learn something new from educated people. Is it a necessary consequence that knowledge, which makes an individual shine, should make others vain and pragmatical? May not two persons, having the same taste, improve each other? I am curious about what happens to people, regardless of where they come from. #RandolphHarris 5 of 5
