The Intelligibility of the Human Mind in a World that is like a Machine

The World is like a machine. Machines are made by human beings, in accordance with plans.  No one can really understand what it would mean for a God, who is eternally perfect to receive greater glory. The World and the human mind are so related that we can learn more and more without limit. We have done all we can when the critic has nothing left to allege except that the investigator is in the on a cunning or skillful act or scheme intended to deceive or outwit someone. However, when nothing else is left to allege, he will allege that. I have observed in myself a simple and easily explained example, which is probably a good model for similar occurrences of those familiar “remarkable coincidences” wherein we meet a person of who we were just thinking. Here is the situation so please follow me closely or you may miss the point. During a walk through the inner city a few days after the title of “Professor” was bestowed on me, which carried with it a great deal of prestige even in monarchical cities, my thoughts suddenly turned to a childish revenge-phantasy against a certain married couple. Some months previous, this couple had called me to see their little daughter, who suffered from an interesting compulsive manifestation following the appearance of a dream.

I took a great interest in the cause, the genesis of which I believed I could surmise, but the parents were unfavorable to my treatment and gave me to understand that they thought of applying to a foreign authority who treated by hypnotism. I now fancied to myself that after the failure of this treatment, the parents begged me to take the patient under my care, saying that they now had full confidence in me, etcetera. However, in my phantasy I answered: “Now that I have become a professor, you have confidence in me. The title has made no change in my ability; if you could not use me when I was instructor, you can get along without me now that I am a professor.” At this point, my phantasy was interrupted by a loud “Good evening, Professor!” and as I looked up, there was the same couple on whom I had just taken this imaginary vengeance. In the view of the comparative rarity and inconstancy of extra sensory-perception phenomena, it is tempting to conclude that these awkward facts should be segregated and disregarded as a sphere in which nature unfortunately provides no discoverable law. However, this sure is an unscientific attitude to adopt.

Science as we know it would never have developed had scientists ignored rare phenomena that conflicted with their current theories. If physicists had ignored magnetic phenomena or the results of the Michelson-Morley experiment has been content to say that principles of Newtonian mechanics remained shows as heuristic maxims, physics would be very different from what it is today. Nonetheless, the next reflection destroyed all semblance of the miraculous. I was walking towards this couple on a straight, almost deserted street; glancing up hastily at a distance of perhaps twenty steps from me, I had seen and realized their stately personalities; but this perception, following the model of a negative hallucination, was set aside by certain emotionally accentuated motives and then asserted itself spontaneously as an emerging phantasy. He had caught all of my revelation and it had sunk deep into him, and he was wearied, and sad. His wife went to him and opened up his arms, and he received her with the utmost tenderness. He kissed her cheeks as though the truth had broken open in him a powerful chaste communion.

Many who argue ESP is incompatible with physics usually start with the question-begging definition of “telepathy” as the action of one mind upon another. However, their main case is that for ESP to be explainable by physics it must, by analogy with radio transmission, be attributed to a physical radiation. However, the inverse-square law applies to all known forms of physical radiation. (The only exception is radiation concentrated in a beam, which will have little attenuation with distance. However, this does not seem relevant, since there have been many successful ESP experiments with a group of subjects scattered in different directions.) One the physical radiation theory we should, it is argued, find a marked decline in scoring level when the subjects’ distance from the source of radiation is much increased. However, all investigators agree that there is no covariation between distance and scoring level, and successful experiments have been performed over distances of several hundred miles, even thousands of miles.

In one experiment, a young man was in distress and not saying anything about the pains he was experiencing, and he was screaming his head silently about someone he had been looking for over a period of months and was also in pain and having fevers. A young lady that he was closed to started posting pictures on her social media account letting him know her head was hurting. Then she would sit next to the fireplace indicating that she was hot. Then she went out to dinner with her sister, who she had not seen in a while. After a while, he started to wonder was this young lady picking up on his painful vibrations, and he asked her and she told him, “I know. I can hear and feel you.” Since ESP is being likened to radio and radio sets have amplifiers and volume controls, we can suppose that the brain possesses an automatic volume control that amplifies weak ESP signals. Physical barriers do not affect ESP, as one would expect on the radiation theory. So, he started to wonder, if she can hear and feel me, then why is my dad not responding?

And a few days later, hours after Valentine’s Day, on 15 February 2016, he was talking to man in the store at like 2am and it reminded him of his dad, he even thought it might be because sixty days had gone by, but knew that he would see him again. And just two days later, he dad appeared at their meeting spot, at the time they used to meet and showed him where he lived. So although they have not been seeing each other much, he walks past his dad’s house almost every day and is happy to see signs that he is at the house, and knows that when the time is right, they will reconnect again. Electrical energy in the agent’s brain is transformed into psychic energy, which can be diffused over any distance, passing through obstacles without attenuation. One reaching the subject’s brain it is transformed back into electrical energy, thus producing neural patterns and experiences corresponding to those of the agent. Psychic energy must have a form of physical energy.

In telepathy the state of the agent’s brain affects the state of the subject’s brain, without any continuous chain of intervening events, and indeed without any transmission energy. Any two substances exert an influence on each other which tends to make them become more alike. The strength of this influence increases with the product of their complexities and decreases with difference between their patterns. This influence has hitherto produced observable effects only in the form of ESP, because the human brain is by far the most complex structure in the World; however, eventually, telepathic interaction will be detectable between computing machines if or when the machines could be made sufficiently complex in structure. For a physicist a physical transition, by definition, involves a transfer of energy. No matter how simple the organism, its structure must be fitted to the satisfaction of its needs, or it will not survive. It is not too unbelievable, there are polygraph machines which can measure brainwaves and blood pressure and determine the likelihood that someone is being truthful or not.  Theory is not a complete explanation of the existence teleological order in the World; it merely tells us how some cases develop from other cases. The origin of life forms lifeless matter.

The Universe is like an artifact like a house, ship, or watch, and it is designed for the realization of goals outside its internal functioning; it is intended to be used for something. For instance, Saturn, the planet, is a source of intense radio emissions, which have been monitored by the Cassini spacecraft, and recently NASA decoded sounds coming from the rings of Saturn, and they sound quite moody, almost like the cry of a dolphin or the sound effects from a 1960s ghost film, and they are actually quiet relaxing. Also, the Cassini spacecraft is 234 million miles from the planet and is using radio and plasma wave instruments to pick up the soundwaves.  Therefore, if the analogy with artifacts is the main support for the notion that the Universe was the result of conscious planning, that support would be firmest if the grounds were presented for thinking that the Universe as a while was well fitted to be used for something. And if this something was of maximum value, we would then have a basis for attributing supreme goodness to the designer.
