The tastes of men and women about beauty are rarely the same. However, beautiful object arouse pleasure. Let it be observed that beauty is taken for the idea raised in us, and the logic of beauty follows that any object whatever that does in fact excite this idea must be judged to be beautiful. However, this invites the possibility of diverse and conflicting judgments that, if subjective response is the sole and decisive test, must all be accepted as equally valid. Are there, however, any properties peculiar to beautiful objects, which can be pointed to, to legitimate certain judgments and whose absence will show others to be mistake? There is the classical property of uniformity in variety. Yet to be consistent with the definition of beauty with which we began, we have to guarantee that thing possessing this property would uniquely and universally arouse the appropriate idea. It can be said summarily that is we fail to do so, and this failure is instructive, it points to the tension between the old and the new ways of thinking, between taking beauty to be an inherent, nonrelational property and using beauty to refer to the capacity of things to evoke a certain experience. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 6
As colors should be as good as nothing if there were no eyes to behold them, so is beauty nothing without the eyes of love behold it. A capacity is not, however an observable property in things like uniformity. It must be interpreted as either a very different sort of property or else it is not a property at all. British aestheticians did not take beautiful to denote a property. Necessarily, therefore, the logical status of the properties that they attribute to beautiful objects—proportion, utility, etc.—is correspondingly altered. Such properties are no longer either identical with, or the conditions of, a property of beauty Even so considered, however, the traditional formulas f beauty were brought under heavy criticism throughout the eighteenth century. Since the attribution of causes can be justifies only by the evidence of their effects in experience, the British, arguing from the things that people do in fact find beautiful, showed that none of these properties are shared by all these things. There was also the more subtle and damning criticism that the traditional formula of “unity in variety” is simply devoid of meaning, because it applies indiscriminately to any object whatever. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 6
Even to the most vulgar souls, there is something attractive in beauty. They are souls to which bodies are to be given in due time. It is possible that any can be so in love with life as to wish to leave these tranquil seats for the Upper World? By the close of the century (1790), it was concluded that any attempt to fine properties common and peculiar to beautiful objects is “altogether impossible.” Finally, it was suggested that “beautiful” is just “a general term of approbation.” How, if the aesthetic judgment arises from subjective feeling and predicates nothing of the object, can it claim to be more than an autobiographical report and can, indeed, claim to be universally binding? Well, because things that are beautiful usually connotes a relatively high degree of value, in contrast to, for instance, the pretty, a fairly orthodox style or genre, pleasure unmixed with pain and the absence of bizarre or discordant relents. Two-thirds of human beauty were the illumination of matter by the intelligence, and but proportion and delicacy of line. Beauty maintains a glorious elasticity in its own ecstasies of hope, provided you do not crush it with a doubt of its own purity. Nothing can be either sweet nor beautiful that is not modest, that is not virtuous. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 6
Could it really be so freakishly abnormal? You know, I told you I have a meeting…I went to brunch at the Winchester mansion. There was some secret, some dark hidden story present there the whole time. I could see it in Beth’s silence and in Beth’s drifting. However, I could not see it in Michael. And even now Kat will not tell us. Beth came clattering down the steps, two pages in her hand. She stood before us, looking like a waxen doll in the light from the upstairs windows, with one finger pointing, like that of a nun in school. It seems wise to accept, in deepest humility and with an aim towards a validating spiritual perfection at the onset, that I may never hope at any juncture of my wanderings, be they for untold centuries or for a few short years of ear unendurable ecstasy, to know whether I share in the Savior’s redemption, and that that very unknowing may be the price I pay for my extra-human sensibility and inherently thirst for life and triumph over the pain I once suffered, over the imminent death that once tyrannized me, over the ubiquitous threat of human time. Some, however, there still are, so thoroughly corrupted that they are not fit to be in trusted with human bodies, and these are made into brute animals, lions, tigers, cats, dogs, and monkeys. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 6
This is what the ancients called metempsychosis, or the transmigration of souls. Conservative accounts of this nature of man may emphasize either his enduring sinfulness of his frailty. The only position conservative cannot take without ceasing to be conservative is the belief that men are fundamentally good and perhaps ultimately perfectible. For in an answer to the question “What is the root cause of political and social problems? Conservatives will point immediately to the nature of man, while liberals and socialists will point to man’s environment. Within the field of social contract theory, social conflict is attributed to the essential nature of man, while others locate the cause in the accidental depredations of a few men who are tempted to violate the laws of nature. Disagreement about the cause of social and political problems has important consequences, for if we find the cause in man’s environment, we will be disposed to study that environment scientifically in an effort to discover the means of improvement. If, for instance, we come to believe that poverty and emotional maladjustment are the root cause of human evils, we will find possible cure in technology or in psychological therapy. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 6
The conservative, however, is distinguished by the belief that the usefulness of such measures is strictly limited and that if improvement can occur at all, it will result from moral changes in the way men behave. Conservatives stress moral characteristics such as cruelty, greed, charity, and integrity as irreducible determinates of human life. The hand of God is everywhere, both in what survives and in what is destroyed. History is not a sequence of accident but the march of God in the World. What we inherit from the past is a trust to be used, replenished, and transmitted to our descendants. The ruler must be guided for his subjects. These subjects, however, include not only the living but those now dead and those yet to be born. This position is basically mystical; it arises from a profound love of the familiar, which mingles easily with practical maxims on wise government. The gifts of God are to be enjoyed, when the Giver is remembered. You might just discover you belong to an extremely rich clan of remarkably generous people. I am sure there never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a divine interposition in their affairs, than those of the United States of America. God, who is alone I able to protect you. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 6
