We learn much about how to deal with authority figures in general from our interactions with parents, who are the first authority figures most of us encounter. Not all parents are alike. This is one of the main reasons people react differently to authority figures. One child has parents who treat him as a small adult, a member of the family who has his own independence and sense of self. Another child’s parents treat him like a doll or a piece of furniture, to be shunted about as it is convenient to do so.
