Pray for Orlando and Pray for Humanity

People who are very upset sometimes say that are losing their minds. In technical terms, they are experiencing the loss of executive functioning. A lot of people seem to think it is cool to bully others and push them to the point of having a psychotic break, some think it is fun to see people suffer and in pain and make them relive traumatic memories. On the morning of 12 June 2016, at 2.02am, Omar Mateen, age 29, of Fort Pierce, Florida USA, pledged allegiance to ISIS, a radical group, and gunned killed 50 people in a gay nightclub in Orlando, injuring 53 others. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 6

This is being called the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States History. It is not funny to terrorize or bully others for fun because when something reminds traumatized people of the past, their right brain reacts as if the traumatic event were happening in the present. However, because their left brain is not working very well, they may not be aware that they are re-experiencing and reenacting the past—they are just furious, terrified, enraged, ashamed, or frozen.  #RyanPhillippe 2 of 6

Basically, when a person is pushed to a psychotic break, they lose their humanity and many have no idea what they are doing. So think about the innocent people that could get hurt as a result of the game you enjoy to play. I know some reporters and others think they have a right to do as they please and upset others, but there are consequences for relentless harassment. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 6

And it is not only up to the government to take action, but employers need to also check their employees who they know are work place bullies and have ongoing behavioral problems so that innocent lives are spared. This is serious. It is not a time to joke around. After the emotional storm passes, they may look for something or someone to blame for it. They behaved the way they did because you were ten minutes late, they saw two guys kissing, someone raped their spouse again, or is cheating on them, or because you burned the potatoes, or because you “never listen to me.” #RyanPhillippe 4 of 6

Of course, most of us have had misplaces anger, but we have never gone to the level that Omar Mateen did. We usually cool down or find a healthy way to defuse our anger, and can hopefully admit our mistake. Trauma interferes with this kind of awareness. Fourteen years after the death of their baby girl, Aaliyah’s people still experience the tragedy because people still make fun of her death and slander her. The original sensations—the sounds and images from the accident—are still stored in their memories.  #RyanPhillippe 5 of 6

When these sensations come to the surface, they can activate an alarm system, which might cause those who care to react as if they were back at home being told that their daughter had died. The passage of fourteen years was erased. The sharply increased heart rate and blood pressure readings still reflect the physiological state of frantic alarm family members, friends, and even some fans feel.  #RyanPhillippe 6 of 6
