Looking-Glass Self

Games prevent honest, intimate, and open relationships between the players. Yet people play them because they fill up their time, provoke attention, reinforce early opinions about self and others, and fulfill a sense of destiny. Disclosure of man to man, honest, direct, uncontrived, is the necessary condition for reducing the mystery that one man is for another. The entity placed in the body is a projection designed as the carrier of projections. It inhabits the body-construct as a mind-entity that can know and do. It brings with it constructions of threats that would attack or negate its knowing and doing. The goal of projection is to protect an imagined entity taken as self by forming projections to ensure imagined continuity. The falsely conceived separated self is deep-seated human strategy for believing that the present can be controlled by using the past as a basis for identity, predictability, and knowledge.  #RyanPhillippe 1 of 4

The opening that is the present as is, is an opening to and of potential, and the discovery that one’s being is this ever-new potentiality as actuality. Problems drop here simply because there is no place for an assumption of a problem-carrying entity. The apparent split in being that involves setting an individual against the World, and an individual against his or her own experience in the form of self-image, results in an investment in unreality, in maintaining a false sense of security. Because people projection involves splitting awareness, there is an internal and external aspect to the process. Internally, projection is associated with the maintained self-image and its associated introjects, that is with rules and expectations assumed to maintain security. Such introjects take place as automatic thoughts and interpretations. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 4

One may note automatic thoughts occurred to maintain the security of the familiar through self-criticism, self-consciousness about performance and doing, and attempts to manage perceptions of lack and insufficient. Outwardly, projection is associated with concern about the reactions of others to one’s self. Thus, a desire to be seen as strong, impressive, and in control masks hidden feeling of self-doubt, weakness, and being out of control. A sense of timing is a crucial element in interpretation. An extended period of a supporting relationship may be necessary as preparation. In some instances, particularly with the chronically emotionally disturbed, that period may be stretched out for months. In other instances, the supporting relationship may be established in one contact. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 4

An over eagerness to avoid dealing with a situation may reflect lack of faith in one’s own competence. Some people want to know that your support will unconditionally be there for them so they do not have to experience distressing situations of negligence, indifference, and mishandling with another person. Perhaps the point to all this is that the more you can unify your social, personal, and idea selves in your interacting with people, the more easily you will be able to communicate—and the more comfortable you will be with yourself. If an individual does not measure up to their ideal self, he may develop extreme feelings of inferiority, perhaps even an inferiority complex, a sense of complete worthlessness that lasts for his whole life. Both inferiority feelings and the feeling that you are competent to deal with the World take a long time and much practice to develop. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 4
