Hold on as Long as Fully Possible to that Rocking-Chair

Ah! Child, you should read books which would teach you a little hypocrisy, which would instruct you how to hide your thoughts a little better. In the middle years, around thirty-five and extending into the early sixties, under normal circumstances there are few gross changes in our behavior, in our attitudes, or in our activities. We experience some decline in energy and become more sensitive to the rush of time because years accumulate with increasing rapidity. In contrast to physical activity, we tend to look more to mental activity for satisfaction and recognition. Even through there is occasional tiredness, life remains full, active, and intact.  #RyanPhillippe 1 of 22

It is a dangerous thing to trust an illustration. Sometimes in the mid-sixties, our life pattern shows more noticeable changes. This is the period of later maturity. We experience increasing difficulty with extensive involvements. Coping with life’s exigencies requires more coping skill. We experience more assets and less financial deficiencies. Gains begin to exceed losses. However, it is hard to life together because your body does not necessarily function the same and one reacts differently to disturbances. It takes a greater expenditure of energy to function.  #RyanPhillippe 2 of 22

xfcgvhbjnm,

Imagination is the child of inherited and living impressions. for some there comes that period to which the greatest anxiety is related: namely, antiquated age. It may come in the late sixties for some, but not until late seventies or eighties for others, and not until the early nineties for a few. During the antiquated period of age, people might experience extreme limitations, but others may not. Life may decisively become constricted and even disorganized. One becomes fragile, perhaps disabled, and virtually much like an infant or toddler, requiring constant care or supervision. Some manage to exists, others simply vegetate, and the nightmare of aging turns into the trauma of senility for a few.  #RyanPhillippe 3 of 22

Senility as the frightening face of aging conveys the greatest threat of all: long-term chronic illness, institutionalization, loss of independent status. When we no longer have a sense of dignity and when we no longer possess a sense of self-determination, then we no longer are ourselves. A terrifying Other has taken over our reliable self. We are lost, yet we continue to live on.  However, keep in mind that aging is not all bad, there are some relatively advantaged 74-year-olds who have better-than-average healthy, cooperativeness, and general well-being. They usually also have paid their houses off, having a nice saving account, and can afford to buy the coolest sports cars. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 22

The darker the ignorance, the more praise to the teacher who dispels it; the deeper the prejudice, more fame to the courage which braves it. Aging is not a death sentence. It is not like the grim reaper is stalking you and every moment you walk out of the house you may go missing or be hunted down by people who hate their elders and thrown into an institution to speed up against your will just so your greedy kids can distribute your house and assets, and cash in on your life insurance policy—come on—your life is not a lottery game. Some antiquated people function well and have a complex inner life. They are intact intellectually and are competent personally. There is a flexibleness, mellowness, and a maturity that characterizes one’s activities and satisfactions. Some still enjoy a broad range of activities like golf, homemaking, driving, gardening, swimming, shopping, and walks through the park. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 22

Of all the illustrious mortals, there are but very few who would not gladly have exchanged their immortality for the comforts and conveniences which are bestowed on the meanest of mankind. Many antiquated people who reduce their levels of stress and participate in a broad range of activities stay young, remains active, finds substitute involvement as limitations appear, and refuses to turn into a sloth. Yet, some antiquated feel more secure with a deliberate decision to withdraw from active involvement and look forward to sitting in a rocking-chair and enjoying a peaceful life. They may still strive for achievement, and maintain a tight control over their impulse of life to defend against anxiety.  #RyanPhillippe 6 of 22

Perhaps it is better to wake up, even to suffer, rather than to remain a dupe to illusions all one’s life. My son keeps calling me about some of his neighbors, and he always tells me, “Dad, why are these people not like my grandparents? I thought old people were nice, peaceful, clear, and proper. These old people are loud, they stink, they fight, curse, drink, and party more than the college students do, what is wrong with them?” Son, the people you are talking about are usually people who are unintegrated or disorganized. They have gross psychological defects, loss of emotional control, and suffer from a deterioration of the thought process. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 22

After I told him that, my son then says, “Dad, what can we do to reduce the painfulness and to enhance the meaningfulness of aging? What can optimize its assets? What can minimize its liabilities? You know, these antiquated people are lucky, I was looking for affordable housing and all of the nice and peaceful places are for seniors only, and they are new and clean and quiet. Affordable housing for the youth tends to be fully of problems, pests, loud noises, crime, prostitution, drugs, and people with serious mental issues. Words are gas until you condense them into pictures.  #RyanPhillippe 8 of 22

My son seems to be dealing with militant old people fighting for a non-bingo way of life. The important as we age, even for the youth is to have an awareness of oneself and one’s identity as a responsible person; confidence in one’s own experience; involvement in decision-making processes; transcendent interest reflecting meaning and significance in living. As you see, many of the elder face the same problems are teenagers and people in their early twenties, and this articulation of the needs of the elderly shows the continuity with the needs of the younger people. #RyanPhillippe 9 of 22

Despite obvious, conspicuous, and monumental differences, we are more alike than we are different. Transition characterizes every age: from the womb to the World; from the home to the school; from the school to the work World; from living with one’s natural family to living in one’s acquired family; from seeking to become settled to having settled in; from any involvements to fewer involvements; from middle age to later maturity to antiquated age. Transition—anticipated, remembered, known, experiences, feared—distinguishes events from the ongoing. The awareness of change symbolized our peculiarly human predicament.  #RyanPhillippe 10 of 22

Under conditions of change, we are forced to reorient ourselves in terms of time and space. Much of the difficulty seniors experience in moving from the house into a smaller place is not simply the thankless and poignant task of deciding about the accumulated possessions of the years. That decision-making is hard enough: What do we do with these letters and financial documents? What about those photographs? Can we throw out these certificates of recognition? What are we to do with the children’s baby things? Oh, I am going to miss my house, trees, flowers, and lawn.  #RyanPhillippe 11 of 22

And so the process goes. Almost every object reawakens long forgotten yet living memories, memories that remind us of who we are. However, more than the throwing out is the uncertainty of the projected moving in. We have to reorient ourselves to find another place. We have to reorganize our possessions in order to dwell in the land of the living. And that takes a mobilization of all the energy we have plus a great deal more! To claim the advantage of superior ag is to give sure offense, an old man is easily brought to speak of olden times. #RyanPhillippe 12 of 22

Youth is a good subject for a physician to work upon. For many elderly people, transitions tend to be especially traumatic. One moves from a known life space in which there may not be room to roam. It is that collapsing of space that lies within the terrible prospect of senility. In its less acute form, the trauma of transition finds expression in the anticipation institutionalization. One sees oneself inevitably driven from relative autonomy into residential care. When the desultory levity of youth has, with age, settled into regularity, it is soon succeeded by pride ashamed to yield, or obstinacy delighting to content.  #RyanPhillippe 13 of 22

Because of the focal fear of institutionalization, and its corollary anxiety the aggravation of aging, things look dim to antiquated folks: they require some young eyes about them, to let them know the World is still the same as it used to be. Youth can enjoy the benefit of the experience of age, and that at a time of life when such experience will be of more service to a man than when he hath lived long enough to acquire it of himself. To help the confused elderly person, Reality Orientation and Attitude Therapy can help many stay coherent and consistent by understanding the individual’s behavior problems and patterns. #RyanPhillippe 14 of 22

Sometimes age looks with anger on the temerity of youth, and youth with contempt on the scrupulosity of age. Reality Orientation is a retraining program aimed at the confusion stemming from severe organic cerebral deficiency. The colors of life in youth and age appear different, as the face of nature in Spring and Winter. The individual is no longer able to keep facts straight. There is a loss of dignity and self-determination. Attention span is short and confusion great. With a careful program of relearning one’s name—recovery of one’s basic identity—and offering simple information as time, place, and activity, the person become reoriented in reality.  #RyanPhillippe 15 of 22

They say that antiquated people find themselves at last face to face with a solid blank wall and stand thumping against it in vain. It resounds, it seems to have something beyond it, but it will not move. That is only a reason for living with open doors as long as we can. In a friendly, calm, direct, and slow atmosphere, the person engages in simple, familiar, and persistent activities. Our first youth is value; for we are never conscious of it, until after it is gone. The repetitive consistency literally works wonders whenever confusion is present and one’s usual control are undermined.  #RyanPhillippe 16 of 22

Mischief is the fun of youth. In contrast to, although in combination with, Reality Orientation, Attitude Therapy deals with the interpersonal exchanges between individuals. It is a carefully planned attitude approach to treatment that endeavors to decrease and extinguish undesirable behaviors and to increase and reinforce desirable behaviors. Just like at the opera, anything seems possible. This method of treatment requires consistency on the part of everyone who has contact with the patient or resident. In it maintained around the clock. Like young child, antiquated people do not have the adaptability and flexibility to cope easily with inconsistency in the environment. #RyanPhillippe 17 of 22

When individuals vary in the way they deal with the person, therefore, confusion, frustration, uncertainty, anxiety, aggravation, irritation, and rage follow. You know how annoying it is when you see someone and they act brand new with you. Or you try to have “water cooler talk” in the supermarket with the cashier about a product and she keeps trying to pry into your personal life and your living arraignments. The less consistency, the greater the resulting upset. The greater the consistency, the less the resulting upset. Youth and discretion are with respect to each other as two parallel lines, which, through infinitely produced, remain still equidistant, and will never coincide.  #RyanPhillippe 18 of 22

Stogner mental agitation and disturbance was no novelty to my neighbor, even before his late sufferings. It never is, to obstinate and sullen natures; for they struggle hard to be such. Miss Bolo rose from the table considerably agitated, and went straight home, in a flood of tears and a sedan-chair because she got a late fee for not paying her rent, but only forgot about it because the management company no longer sends out rent statements. Miss Bolo was so upset because a late fee eats into her Social Security check and she cannot afford her medications as it is. Miss Bolo thinks it would be hard for her to find a new place to live and wish her property manager was more considerate of her advanced age.  #RyanPhillippe 19 of 22

We can forgive ourselves that, at the time of the previous emotional overwhelm (like the one Miss Bolo experienced), we simply did not know how to handle it. When one is vulnerable, has no family, lives on retirement, and cannot afford market rate rent, and already having problems paying the bills, anything that may cause them to lose their homes causes a great deal of stress. Often times when people with medical conditions end up homeless, they die fast because they do not have the materials nor facilities necessary to care for themselves. There were a lot of residuals that left Miss Bolo emotionally disabled at that time. #RyanPhillippe 20 of 22

She left her beautiful home in the suburbs, lost a lot of her possession, and friends and neighbors, and now lives in what she calls an office space, where no matter what time of day or night it is, it is happy hour. However, Miss Bolo reports that after she goes to her Reality class with the nice young man, she feels a sense of gratitude that she has a new opportunity to learn, to grow, and to acquire wisdom. One of the most common in which we see this emotional crippling is after a divorce of death of a spouse. All too often it is followed by bitterness and the impaired capacity to create a new loving relationship. The unwillingness to let go of the blame continues the emotional crippling, which can go on for years, or even a life time.  #RyanPhillippe  21 of 22

When we come upon bitterness, what we have really discovered is an unhealed area in our own emotional makeup, and the effort that we put into healing, it will bring us enormous rewards. Many antiquated people I talk to besides the normal concerns, the thing they miss the most is having someone they trust to talk to and spend time with consistently. In any situation that involves suffering, we have to ask ourselves: How long am I willing to pay the cost? What where the karmic propensities to begin with? How much blame is enough? Is there time to call an end to it? How long will I hold on to it? How much self-punishment is enough? When will this sentence end? Ambition, baneful ambition, hath ruined angels, and lost them in Heaven.  #RyanPhillippe 22 of 22
