The Built Environment of the Technical World and the Soul

Truly effective communication is as attuned to what is going on emotionally as it is to mental activity, staying empathetically present, listening to both what is being said and to what is not being said. This is about undivided attention, openness, compassion, and genuine interest, all working together. Pay attention to body language and the quality of presence. As we listen, we become aware of what is not being spoken but nonetheless still being expressed. We deepen our resonance with the other, becoming a kind of caring clearing for the full expression of what they are sharing with us. Such nonverbal attunement is especially valuable when the other is disturbed enough to be saying things that are easily categorized as irrational or even absurd. At such times, it can be best not to take what is being said literally, and to simply be present for the other. (That being said, deep listening does not mean putting up with abuse nor disrespect.)  #My confidence level has increased; my business has increased. There are things in life for me to accept and I do not always prefer them and yet it is okay. I can no longer get stuck in doing something wrong. This is a different environment to dwell in. I am highly creative and visionary. I have had a radical alteration of consciousness which is not a small leap. My normal fear state is not what it used to be. I have lost it. I cannot find anything to be afraid about. Fear just comes from images in my mind. What would have ordinarily thrown me and wiped out all the good is just one thing among many now, no big deal. It does not obliterate all the rest that is present. It is just one thing. There is a lot more self-trust and sense of my own ability to be present. I see more clearly and powerfully. #RandolphHarris 1 of 3

People living in modern cultures suffer an extreme degree of alienation that was unknown in earlier times—from society, community, family, antiquated generations, nature, religion, tradition, their body, their feelings, and their humanity itself. Technology has swept over the planet like a White Squall completely illuminating and reshaping the conditions of the World. It has produced global urbanization as the primary mode of life, with the skyscraper its architectural symbol. The skyscraper condenses and makes visible the conditions of technological life. The skyscraper dominates the actual city; it now dominates the architecture of the soul as well, and at great price, for we do not know how to live with a form which by design excludes the participation of the soul. At the same time, the tremendous power of this mode of World manifestation makes it impossible to simply turn back to architectural symbols with soul—to the circle, the cave, the hut, the maze, the spiral, the village, the classic raised cottage with its fresh white paint and planted garden, with a high picket fence, gate, and a bell. In a dehumanizing techno-pagan culture that has lost sight of the deepest potentials of human nature, we are required a spirituality that can help us connect with the intrinsic power, beauty, and goodness of being human. For humanity to move forward in a beneficial direction, we are required to have a guiding vision of all that it means to be human.  #RandolphHarris 2 of 3

The built environment of the technical World prohibits the spontaneous experience of soul. Skyscrapers may be spectacular, dazzling, and powerful. These buildings take control of life through their capacity to appeal to the masses because they are so architecturally stunning and modern and make great use of land. Part of the practice of finding soul again involves experiencing rage in the face of such control, but it also involves experiencing compassion for those buildings. The normal is the square—right angle means right action—decisive, clear, clean, moral, sharp, immediate, with reflection as displayed by the many windows. Right-angled mentality encourages expansion without limits because the straight line, make it appear the building reaches into infinity. Our work is to look upon all this, our actual situation, and bring in the complexity of the soul. Even in the best times, being a human is challenging and confusing, for in involves living on different planes of reality at the same time. To be fully human, then, requires cultivating a taste for paradox—an appreciation of how very different truths can be true at the same time. Indeed, it is this multi-dimensional quality of our experience that is the source of all human creativity and greatness. #RandolphHarris 3 of 3
