
We are seeking symbolically to reconcile Heaven and Earth, essence and existence, infinity and the finite. When conflict is minimized, security is maximized. Contrariwise, when the patterns are dramatically different, there is a chaos in the personality. Exaggerated differences makes for contradictory and competitive inconsistency, a convulsive civil war where conflict is maximized and security minimized. We have to realize that people are different is this is why there are interpersonal relationship problems. Even though, as human organisms, we possess the same basic stuff, we exhibit great variability. The individual is always more than species. The individual cannot avoid his individuality. Here are five working assumptions about my patterns of interpersonal interaction: I behave in order to reduce my own uncomfortableness; my interaction with others is designed to elicit reciprocal responses that fit in with and continue behavior that reduces my anxiety. How I behave may be adaptive or maladaptive, depending upon its frequency, balance, accuracy, and intensity; personality exists on various levels, including the public and the conscious, which are interpersonal, and the private, the valuational, and the ground, which are intrapersonal; despite a basic commonality, individuals are different in every respect. A behavior initiated from the distant side is intended to produce a distant response. To return an intended distant response with a warm, friendly response is to disrupt the other’s security pattern. This disruption is particularly baffling for most people in the helping professions. We are warm and friendly. When such responses only antagonize certain people, increasing their already uncomfortable pattern, we are bewildered. In fact, what is happening is our mistakenly moving too close at a time they are requiring some distance. It does not matter if you live in an apartment, condominium, high rise, loft, or house, the pace where we wake up every morning provides the most immediate opportunity for awakening soul to the outer World. The image of the house evokes archetypical, permanent aspects of Earth connected with the desire to feel at home in the World. The house is more than a box which to live; it is a soul activity to be retrieved from the numbness of the World of modern objects. Each place of the house, each room, hallway, closet, stair, and alcove is a distant structure that animates different aspects of the soul. Some say I do not have a soul, I guess that is why I want a Victorian mansion, so I can feel a connection and excitement about the other like others do. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 7

Without such differences, eating, sleeping, Netflix and Chill function, sitting, bathing, even talking become merely biological activities. And these activities revert to the biological when the soul does not wrap the impoverished dwelling. The particular soul qualities with which I wish to clothe the neglected house are the imagination of doors, windows, and rooms. For a psychology taking it stance on the side of the World, doors have soul. They are guardians of boundaries, they sever both to divide and to connect psychic topography of the house, keeping its imagination multiple, and each part in direct or indirect relation with every other part. Doors make and mark tensions between the diverse elements within the house. The most complex door is the entrance, for it must bear the greatest tension—keeping the inside secure without barring entry completely, signaling the individuality of this house while appearing commonplace. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 7

The importance accorded the entrance of the house shows in the ornamentation framing it. Where such framing is absent, the patterning or figuration on the door itself announces the necessity of hesitancy, of a moment of purification and initiation before entering into a sacred body. What are you willing, tell me what you are willing to do? Kiss it, kiss it better, baby. The art of the door makes of arriving, departing, and returning a ritual process that assures that the house will not be taken for granted. Clothe your entrance with such images. Door possess magical qualities in stories, fairy tales, and folklore. They are the entrances and exits through which imagination moves. Appreciation, admiration, and teachableness characterize the power dimension. What could be more enhancing than the desire to receive from us? That makes us feel competent. It Is possible to live in one room; many do so, but those who live in a single room create many invisible doors. Doors introduce time and rhythm into the house, acting as punctuation marks, slowing the restless urge for movement into pauses. Certain kinds of doors suffer in the extreme and require particular soul care. We are focusing on exaggerated, too intense, inappropriate patterns of give-and-take. It is as if there are too many heavy towels and soaked sheets on one side of an automatic washer, causing it to stop its regular functioning. We chased our pleasures here, dug our treasures there, but you still recall the time we cried. Break on through to the other side. The gate is straight, deep and wide. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 7
