The Caverns of the Mind are Open

The caverns of my mind are open, and they will not close. A good mind ought to be incited, a bad mind restrained. To think the man, whose ample mind must grasp whatever yonder stars survey—what is your opinion of that image of the mind’s grasping the whole Universe? It is the first proof of a superior mind to liberate itself from prejudices of country or of education. Love for country, whilst it has occasioned some men to do noble deeds, has caused others to commit wild extravagances. Like the rainbow, Peace rests upon the Earth, but its arch is lost in Heaven.  #RandolphHarris 1 of 9

On the whole, the fighters, dead and alive, ought to be very thankful that things turned out so well. Peace is only a name for civil war. Life itself is civil war; and our enemies are more or less strong and numerous, according to circumstances. A poor prince who is weak in cavalry, and whose whole infantry does not exceed a single man, had best quit the field. A certain readiness to perish is not so very rare, but it is seldom that you meet men whose hearts, steeled in the impenetrable armor of resolution, are ready to fight a losing battle to the last.  #RandolphHarris 2 of 9

War or battle as a thing very beastly, and yet to no kind of beasts in so much use as to man, they do detest and abhor in Utopia. And contrary to the custom almost of all other nations, they count nothing so much against glory as glory gotten war. For the wrong done by one captain, all the captains conspire to do greater wrongs; and the blazing dwellings by midnight, the poor woman and her naked children escaping from the flames to perish of hunger; the gibbeted soldier on the nighest tree; and the wanton murder of the shrieking babe, quieted in its screams upon the bayonet of the yelling soldiers—these are the means by which, repairing one wrong, war does a thousand greater.  #RandolphHarris 3 of 9

There is no casting of swine’s meat before men worse than that which would flatter virtue as though her true origin were not good enough for her, but she must have a lineage, deduced as it were by spiritual heralds, from some stock with which she has nothing to do. Virtue’s true lineage is older and more respectable than any that can be invented for her. As there are virtues which are their own reward, so there are vices which are amply their own punishment. Such is the power of virtue over the heart, that even a long course of vice will not render us wholly invulnerable to its divine influence.  #RandolphHarris 4 of 9

Virtue alone is true honor, true freedom, and solid, durable happiness. Every man that is destitute of virtue is at heart a coward. The pressure of suppressed feelings is later felt as irritability, mood swings, tensions in the muscles of the neck and back, headaches, cramps, bleeding disorders, colitis, indigestion, insomnia, hypertension, allergies, and other somatic conditions. Weak as virtues, frail as guilty natures. Revenge may be wicked, but it is natural. For little more than the pleasure of revenge and the lust of bloodshed, our hostile clans do the work of executioners on each other.  #RandolphHarris 6 of 9

There are plenty of boys that will come hankering and groveling around you when you have got an apple and beg the core off of you; but when they have got one, and you ask for the core and remind them how you gave them a core one time, they say thank you most to death, but there is not a-going to be no core. However, I notice they always get come up with; all you got to do it wait. When we repress feelings, it is because there is much guilt and fear over the feeling that it is not even consciously felt at all. It becomes instantly thrust into the unconscious as soon as it threatens to emerge. The repressed feeling is then handled in a variety of ways to ensure that it stays repressed and out of awareness.  #RandolphHaris 7 of 9

Interest is the primum mobile of all human actions, at whose shrine are constantly sacrificed every tender virtue, every social perfection. Vice there puts on the appearance of virtue. Grandeur and magnificence may change the very nature of vice, and render criminality innocent. It is the guilty heart, not the guilty hand, which merits the vengeance of Heaven. Of these mechanisms used by the mind to keep the feeling repressed, denial and projection are perhaps the best-known methods, as they tend to go together and reinforce each other. There are no devils but those which are begotten upon selfishness and reared by cunning. He or she that is shipped with the devil must sail with the devil.  #RandolphHarris 8 of 9

Pray what sort of gentleman is the devil? For I have heard some say there is no such person; and that it only a trick of the parsons to prevent their being broke; for, if it was publically known that there was no devil, the parsons would be of no more use than soldiers in peace. Methought, if there be no devil, how can wicked people be sent to him? Denial results in major emotional and maturational blocks. It usually accompanied by the mechanism of projection. Because of guilt and fear, many repress the impulse of feeling, much like Cody Stark, Tony Lopez, Dave Bender, Kevin Maurice Johnson, Jerry Brown, and other trashy harlots are to live with themselves because they deny its presence within them.  Satan has faithful instruments, and the bond of wickedness is stronger than the ties of virtue.  #RandolphHarris 9 of 9
