This Incongruous Monster, the Public

Like the Watergate concertos, just when development gets crucial the tape gets jammed. Together we have shared our own private fantasy of sitting quietly before a crackling fire in a snowbound cabin in the woods. It had been peaceful and beautiful. I think when we started, if anything would have bothered me, it would have been the people watching last week. However, it did not bother me at all. I really felt good, like, you would have missed the best part if you had missed last week. Everyone laughed uproaringly as we shared the fantasy World together. It was a very warm feeling. I think it was especially meaningful to me, too, in terms of being able to break down the fear that I have had of relationships. And last week, I really finally realized that I had self-control with it.  I can have a warm, close, enjoyable relationship and not get carried away and feel guilty about it. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 6

Our conversations have turned to the dramatic changes which had taken place in me. Initially, I had come across as such an uninteresting people, a little child, an emotionally flat person. But lately, you said that I have come through as so alive. You are the person I contact in times of great happiness and other reasons. What an incredible Spring it has been. For our most recent time together we chose not to be observed. I was thinking you have changed my life. These deconstructive conversations dismantle the foundations of our conceptual constructions and thereby allowing us to experience the unstructured, natural mind. They penetrate the seeming reality of feelings, emotions, and sensations in a way that dissolves their existence. The truth cannot always be told openly, but somehow it does come out. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 6

The annoyance and displeasure caused by “all that talk” and by the peculiar prickling sensations, represented the pangs of conscience, or the feeling of guilt which accompanied the phantasies. The distortion in this whole picture consisted of a fusion of feelings and ideas which had played a part in the conflict in the mind of a sensitive person. I could not decide one way or the other, so I tore myself entirely away from reality and behaved, as we say, deresitically. I abandoned all logic and objectified my phantasies in disguised fashion. However, no human being who has been brought up under the system of logic and morality which prevails in our civilization can disengage himself entirely from his past. No matter how bizarre and beautiful the dream appears, one knows that dreams can and do come true.  #RyanPhillippe 3 of 6

No matter how anxious we are to hide our true nature in adjusting ourselves to the repressive forces of civilization, repression sometimes fails and our real desires come to the surface. The dream is a hidden fulfillment of a repressed wish, or a direct attempt to obtain in phantasy what is denied us in reality. Wit is a direct effort to make use of distortions in order to obtain pleasure from otherwise forbidden sources. On thinking of you, I cannot help saying that if there were more people like you how much more beauty would be added to the World. I really do not know how to express my thanks for your gift and kindness. You brought me so much happiness. Only at such a moment can one really understand a profound relationship. We like to tell joke and listen to them because for the moment we not only forget inexorable reality, but also obtain pleasure at the expense of our hardships. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 6

Still, in all these phenomena, we remain in touch with reality. Normally when we listen to people talking, we assume that they are actually telling us means something: that there is some truth or reality to what they are saying. There is a strong consensual pressure to listen in this way. When we do not understand what people are saying, we still assume it is meaningful. We typically try to work out what they meaningful. We typically try to work out what they mean by inviting them to say more. When we listen to a story from the unconditioned mind, there is no intrinsic meaning. We no longer assume their suffering is real or fictitious.  #RyanPhillippe 5 of 6

What seems to be happening may or may not be happening. This opens up the possibility of engaging with someone’s construction from a place of total innocence and freshness. We have learned to speak and listen from the beginner’s mind—gazing with sheer awareness into sheer awareness, habitual, abstract structures melt into the fruitful Springtime of 2016. You are so considerate in expressing in a touchingly generous way to me your congratulations, which I will immensely treasure as a gift so as to express my thanks for your heartfelt regards.  #RyanPhillippe 6 of 6
