A reference group is a group from which an individual gets his standards or values whether he actually belongs to that group or not. He compares himself to them and measures his success by their terms. This is the concept of prestige. No matter how necessary and valuable the work of a student is, his job will probably never have the prestige that is given to a doctor or teacher. There is much logic in this.
