In Being Wild and Natural—there is a lot of Self-Control and Honor

Some individuals have gone through extreme lengths to make their work meaningful, some have left a normal existence in order to dedicate themselves to making a difference in the lives of others. There are a great many ways to make one’s job more meaningful by adding value to it. A supermarket clerk who pays genuine attention to customers, a physician concerned about the total well-being of patient rather than just specific symptoms, a news reporter who considers trust at least as important as the sensational interest when writing a story, can transform a routine job with ephemeral consequences into one that makes a difference. #RyanPhillippe 1 of 7

With increasing specialization, most occupational activities have become repetitive and one-dimensional. It is difficult to build a good self-concept if all one does is type reports all day long or fill out forms from morning to night. By taking the whole context of the activity into account, and understanding the impact of one’s actions on the whole, a trivial job can turn into a memorable performance that leaves the World it better shape that it was before. To transcend a need is to go beyond it, to surpass that level of existence. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 7

The satisfaction of physical needs is indeed the indispensable precondition of a satisfactory existence but in itself it is not enough. In order to be content, men must also have the possibility of developing their intellectual and artistic powers to whatever extend accords with their personal characteristics and abilities. As a young person moves into adolescence, assuming that his survival requirements are met and he had gained a sense of autonomy, security, and love, he now faces a still more difficult takes. Now he must begin to answer the difficult question, “Who am I?” and to seek satisfaction for his ego requirements. Ego here refers to the sense of self, the individual within your body who is the real you. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 7

Like everyone else, I could make a long list of encounters with workers who, in addition to doing their job, helped reduce the entropy around them. An actor who quit his job in Hollywood to protect his family, and did it with a smile on his face; a real-estate agent who kept helping years after the house sold; a flights attendant who was willing to stay after the rest of the crew left the airport to locate a missing child…In all such cases, the value of the job performance was increased because the worker was willing to invest extra psychic energy into it, and was able to withdraw from it additional mean because he was given enough support and love by his parents while he was young so that he is secure, not afraid to try new things. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 7

He developed a strong sense of autonomy, and feels secure enough about his own personality—strengths, weaknesses, and uniqueness—to expand his horizons. Because he cares so much about life and doing the best that he can, Ryan is not burdened by the deficiency-motivation. Not everyone has to have a perfect childhood. Ryan found ways to overcome deficiencies so they do not prevent him from concentrating on expanding is abilities, enjoying his life—not always hung up as some lower level. How? Perhaps through therapy, perhaps through association with other people. Ryan is not controlled by the wishes of other people. This is not to say that he scorns tradition and cares nothing about other people’s needs. It is to say that he is not controlled by these things, when he wants to do something different. #RyanPhillippe 5 of 7

Ryan is a self-actualizer and tends to be impatient with trivial and nonsensical rules. He will be bound by a rule if it makes sense to him. He seeks novelty, stimulation, challenge, rather than safety. In his job, Ryan will not be so much tempted by a larger salary as by the chance to do something well, to experiment. However, the meaning he derives from a job does not come free. As these examples show, one must do some thinking and caring beyond what the job description calls for. And this in turns requires additional attention, which, as had been said again and again, is the most precious resource we have. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 7

The special private happiness of the free person comes from his finding ways that help him be present in what he is doing. “When I feel most pressured, most unfree, it is usually because I am not there as me. I do not mean that I am not in what I am doing, necessarily, I mean that I am driving myself, treating myself as an object, a tool, an instrument,” reports Ryan Phillippe. None of this is mean to imply that he is perfect all of the time, but Ryan can hardly be called ordinary. He is a person, who because of his own motivations, has been able to use more of his ability and intelligence than must, because in the main, he is not controlled by his own lower requirements nor by other people. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 7
