Natural Selection in Action on Man in the Universe

Throughout all eternity, the parts of the past are but parts of the future reversed. Many people generally report much lower moods when they are alone than when they are with others. They feel less happy, less cheerful, less strong, and more bored, more passive, and more lonely. The only dimension of experience that tends to be higher alone is concentration. When first hearing about these patterns, many thoughtful individuals are incredulous: “This cannot be true,” they say, “I love to be alone and seek out solitude when I can.” Sometimes when I am alone, I get a little blue, but it is hard to distinguish if it is because I am tired, or because someone is getting on my nerves.  #RyanPhillippe 1 of 10

The eternity to come is but a prolongation of time present: and the beginning may be more wonderful than the end. We live in a community where there are a lot of busy people and nice people, but then there are others with a lot of time on their hands, and for fun, it seems they like to harass others and play dumb. There may be isolated instances when expressions of a particular emotion may be inappropriate or even disastrous (such as a surgeon’s sobbing openly during intricate brain surgery.) However, for most of us emotions form a greatly underdeveloped area of our experience. If we do not acknowledge our emotional side, learn how to cultivate and appreciate it, then we lose out on a great part of life. #RyanPhillippe 2 of 10

There is no particular virtue in being humanoid, unless you are a robot! Human being are not mechanical or machinelike. They have a full range of emotional responses, and if we were honest most of us would admit that we would prefer a bit more uplifting feeling in the people around us. However, it is possible to learn to like solitude, but it does not come easily. If one is an artist, scientist, or writer; or if one has a hobby, or a rich inner life, then being alone is not only enjoyable but necessary. Relatively few individuals, however, master the mental tools that will make this possible. #RyanPhillippe 3 of 10

There must be a reason why emotions are part of our human nature, though we cannot fully explain it. Probably there are survival values attached to certain strongly-felt emotions, such as fear, anger, surprise, and sorrow. However, even beyond this, a human being meeting the variety of experiences life presents cannot help but realize that a great part of really getting into life is emotional and sensate and intuitive, as we as merely cognitive. An instinct, experience, or tendency has survival value if it helps (or once helped) human beings to stay alive. #RyanPhillippe 4 of 10

All of us get angry. Some of us can handle it because we accept is as natural, express it in a healthy way, and do not go out and burn, kill, or rape the object of our anger. Some people have not learned how to accept their anger—perhaps because their families have not. They hold it back, say it does not exist, smile when they want to scream. After months or years of building up steam, they may erupt into orgies of violence or convert the anger into withdrawal, self-destruction, or some other form.  #RyanPhillippe 5 of 10

Brussels is Belgium’s capital and home to the European Union. On Tuesday, 22 March 2016, 34 people were killed and 250 seriously injured at Brussels airport, as there were two explosions, and a third explosion on the Metro system close to a European Union building hours later. The attacks were carried out by an airport suicide bomber believed to be El Bakraoui. A man likes to assume superiority over himself, by holding up his bad example and sermonizing it. Of course, uncontrollable and violent temper tantrums are hardly something to be commended. People have to learn how to let their anger out in simple, easy ways, while the angers are still small, immediate, and manageable. #RyanPhillippe 6 of 10

A hero, we think, is someone who is never afraid. By this same reasoning, then, a person who feels fear is labeled a coward. And so it goes, passed on from generation to generation. However, psychologically, it is nearly impossible never to feel fear. Generally, we assume that people who differ from us—by kindship, language, race, religion, education, social class—will have to be watched with suspicion. Early human groups usually assumed that they were the only true humans, and those who did not share their culture were not. Cultural differences have served to reinforce our isolation from each other. #RyanPhillippe 7 of 10

Because of this, whenever different groups have come into contact, they have been all too often able to ignore each other’s humanity and treat the “Other” as an enemy that in case of need could be destroyed without too much compunction. This error in thinking has led to an infinity of conflicts between races and creeds barely simmering under the surface of civilization.  All species are capable of producing offspring at a faster rate than food. Since, in each generation more offspring are produced than can survive, and owing to limited resources, there is competition between individuals. #RyanPhillippe 8 of 10

Individuals who possess favorable variations or traits (e.g., speed, resistance to disease, protective skin) have an advantage over those who do not have them. In other words, the favorable trait increases the likelihood of survival and reproduction. Over long periods of geological time, successful variations accumulate in a population, so that later generations may be distinct from ancestral ones. Thus, in time, a new species of human may appear, and have unique abilities. People from different backgrounds have to learn to cooperate and tolerate foreign ways. #RyanPhillippe 9 of 10

The main thing in life, no matter what happens, is not to be afraid to be human, or else the World becomes incomprehensible. I am renewed and refreshed: my whole being responds to thy love, and I am complete in thee. All my ways are guarded and guided, and I shall live with thee eternally. Oh love of my heart and keeper of my spirit, none can separate us, for we are one. So shall thy wisdom guide me, they presence dwell within me, thy love keep me and thy life envelop me now and forevermore. I rest in thee. #RyanPhillippe 10 of 10
