Doughnuts, Guns, Day School!

aw

I have hardly ever felt myself an outsider wherever I have been. I am homesick for more than one country, and I seem to belong as much in one place as in any other. If you are doing what you want to do, you can be content with very little. I still have a great yearning for Germany at times, especially for its cuisine, architecture, pine forests and the Baltic coast.

I never lose a thread of what I am saying, but part of my mind is sometimes occupied with other matters than the conversation I am conducting. I am intensely and passionately devoted to reality. I am a radical humanist, just as I have always been. No one can destroy their past, now should one want to, I think.

Let us consider the concept of individuality and individualism, about which there is also a certain amount of confusion. If we mean the recognition that each of us develops as a unique person with the right to be distinguished from the majority of people, we are talking about the process of individuation.

IMG_20150926_225252

On the other hand, if we mean the idea that my rights as an individual are of paramount importance compared to those of the majority, then we are talking about individualism. The first is not incompatible with healthy social interaction. The second can create conflict.

During periods when people had to rely on themselves, in frontier settings, a strong sense of individualism was not only an asset, it was a necessity in the early days of America’s history glorify the rugged, individualistic mountain man, trapper, pioneer. They have fastened a heroic image in the minds of man or a brave hardy woman.

However, contemporary life is far from being a frontier situation, expect perhaps in some philosophic senses. Though we still need people who have a strong sense of their own who recognize the importance of interdependence with others, our population is still booming, we no longer have the problem (or luxury) of having to exist miles away from each other.

So the needs of our society make more and more insistent demands. Each of us still needs to grow and develop a strong sense of him or herself as an individual. However, the increasingly competing social and group demands cannot be ignored or played down.

Each of us occupies specific spaces in the culture, called statuses. We may have many different statuses in a lifetime. We are born to some (like being male or female, being a member of a given ethnic background, being the oldest, youngest, middle, or only child, and so on).

Others, like being a student, wife, or husband, a machinist, or a Mason, must be achieved or acquired. Whether inherited or acquired, each status carries with it a set of expected behaviors and attitudes, usually carefully set out by the culture. Thus set of behaviors is called a role.

Much of an individual’s personality is well established by the age of five or six. However, one’s self concept is still growing and expanding, particularly in the number and type of roles one is required to play.

To achieve the status of doctor, a person, must go through specified training, establish an outlet for his or her expertise in the form of a private practice or a position in a hospital, be able to perform certain expected tasks, and generally act in a professional manner.

IMG_20151004_151843

This last is perhaps the most difficult. Professional manner has much more to do with the role established by the culture (and the AMA) than it does with the personality of any individual doctor.

Many are wondering why is it that Kevin Johnson, the Mayor of Sacramento, can have a trail of sexual abuse, over a 20 year period, and be allowed to still be Mayor. Simply because that is the culture of Sacramento. Kevin Johnson is rich and famous, so he has been allowed to sexually abuse children, and women, steal money, and no one has stopped him because he is always able to buy his way out of the situation.

DVSF

The people of Sacramento seem to value money more than the law. Just like you have reporters who work at certain TV stations, who behave like clowns and do things they should not, but get away with it people the people in Sacramento are tone deaf. If it does not happen to them, they do not care.

i-know-killer

However, this does not go for all people. There are many moral, educated, and upright people in Sacramento, so I do not want to put them down. It just seems the majority of the city is drunk off some Kool aid basketball want to be celebrity hype and is finally coming down off the syrup they been sippin’ on.

vsDB

Most of us play out the roles expected of us, and these roles may actually become part of our personalities in time. However, sometimes after we have learned a given set of role expectations, the culture may effect “change the rules.” For example, a much warmer, more informal manner is appropriate for a doctor than the role dictated fifty years ago.

X

These role changes, like all other changes in our society, are coming at an accelerating rate, and the person who fails to keep up may be bewildered at society’s sudden lack of acceptance of his or her role behavior.

IMG_20151001_011749

He is still “following the rules,” but the “rules” have changed! Unlawful behavior and ignoring injustice has become a way of life in Sacramento, California and that is why the Mayor, Kevin Johnson is able to get away with sexually abusing children and women and stealing money, this is why crime is up by 40 percent in Sacramento, California. The rule has become, if you do not have money, you do not matter. This is a World Class City for the reach and everyone else needs to step aside.

Some statuses are more prized than others, regardless of how well an individual carries out the role expectations. This is the concept of prestige. No matter how necessary and valuable the work of a cesspool cleaner is, his job will probably never have the prestige that is given a doctor or teacher. There is not much logic in this. We need people to drain our cesspools, just as we need those who can repair broken bones and educate children.

The element of prestige has an important effect on personality development and especially upon the development of self-concept. If I work many years to become a top grade mechanic, I may take a great deal of pride in my work and be paid good wages.

., .,

However, if people constantly make rude remarks about mechanics or downgrade the status of those who get their hands dirty as they work, I may end up feeling I am not as good as those who do not work with their hands or who wear a suit and tie when they work.

Paradise will be restored on Earth during Jesus’ rule as God’s king. In a battle called Armageddon, Jesus will lead God’s angels and destroy all who oppose God. Then Jesus will imprison Satan for 1,000 years. God’s people will survive the destruction because Jesus will guide and protect them. They will enjoy everlasting life in Paradise on Earth. When will God bring an end to evil on Earth?

Capture3f1f

Jesus gave a sign to indicate when the end would be near. Present conditions threaten man’s survival and show that we now live in “the conclusion of the system of things.” During Jesus’ 1,000 year rule from Heaven over the Earth, he will bring all suffering to an end. Besides serving as King, Jesus will act as High Priest and will cancel the sins of those who love God. Thus, by means of Jesus, God will eliminate sickness, aging, and dead.
