Virtue is the Only Nobility

Ancients called dreams the whispering of the gods, and there are thousands of other poetic, mystical, and theological explanations. You are for sincerity and against corruption, a norm of life in your heart, which has made you, in our hearts, a model. Virtue alone is true honor, true freedom, and solid, durable happiness. Every man that is destitute of virtue is at heart a coward. The greatest personal advantages, if not strengthened by virtue, are the most fatal gifts that nature can dispense. Small as it is, a step in life’s pilgrimage should be counted as an experience of happiness, for it is one in one’s trudge. Virtue is the music of the soul, the harmony of the passions. The Earth is so boundless and the morning sunshine is so splendid! How can a person not value so sweet years? Live on, that is my wish for you. Virtue can slumber, even in the midst of misfortune. Outward ceremonies will not compensate for the want of virtue. Chasity is a great virtue in men as in a woman.

A man who understands life can learn the delicate charm of flowers; a man who understands friendship can learn the happiness of others, the man is you, my friend! May you discard all of your sigh and sadness into the furnace of life to cast golden hope. May your dream come true. Colorful spring is the most cheerful season, I have so many words to say but I do not know how to start. May deep blessing be around you day after day, year after year. As there are virtues which are their own reward, so there are vices which amply their own punishment. Virtue is the music of the soul, the harmony of the passions. The impulses of love are so subtle, and the influence of false reasoning, when enforced by eloquence and passion, so unbounded, that no human virtue is secure from degeneracy. There is dignity in conscious virtue. I wish you can find that there contains my heartfelt blessing in this little gift. In this special day, I wish your life is full of laughter and joy every second.

As in waking fantasy, the dream is often the workshop of creative minds. Often times, new ideas take shape or are suggested by the action of our dreams. Sometimes there is a more indirect result: one student reported that after cramming all evening for a big exam, he went to bed and dreamed of great achievements. He woke up feeling so flushed with success, so confident, that he went in and made a nearly perfect score on the exam! We are pretty sure he did this more as a result of having crammed for the answers, but the added boost to his self-confidence certainly did not do any harm. The realm of fantasy is just as much a part of the cognitive process as any other respectable thinking or memory system. However, fantasy does have many characteristics that make it difficult to study. One is that it is so personal and subjective that it is difficult to share with others. A fantasizer may not even be certain of all the details of the fantasy himself, making it hard to describe to another person. Another problem with trying to understand someone’s fantasy is that the details and events in a fantasy may seem too different or unusual to be shared. Suppose I am daydreaming in class, and the professor raps me on the head and demands to know what I was daydreaming about?

Is this for real? It is not what it seems, you are like an angel. The feel of your hand as it touches my hair, it makes me tremble. Do not want to let go of the feelings we share. Our hearts beating fast, and I want it to last, there is a burning inside.  You are drifting, the Sun comes up, you are fading, you seem so far.  I do not know if I am awake, open my eyes. I may be afraid to tell him that I was imagining that the love of my life suddenly swooped down through the window and carried me off to Heaven, thus relieving the class of the rest of his boring lecture! He might be hurt by the thought, though I was intending him no harm at all. He may also get hung up on the unusual thought of me being in love, a fact that is absolutely irrelevant to his class. Another difficult aspect of fantasy or imaginative thinking is that I do not have any control over the process. I may start the fantasy off with some conscious idea, but where it goes from there is up to all that is packed into those cells in my memory center. The fun of fantasy ( but also the terror!) is that it is free and spontaneous.

One of the fantasy’s most important characteristics is that, generally speaking, it is a product of the fantasizer’s own interior mind, not of one’s environment. Real people, places, and events are often the subjects of our imaginings. In fantasy, the experiences that are part of our memory banks may replay themselves, often with no apparent external cue of stimuli at one time, but during fantasy they seem to be independent acting on their own, often unrelated to what we are consciously experiencing at the time. One of the most significant characteristics of creative people is an active and fully accepted imagination, one that has full play in their lives. Many discoveries and inventions began as playful gestures, casual and fanciful experiments, fantasy imaginings, which caused the more logical or rational process to later get into gear. Methods of inner imagery are of the utmost value. These methods help release creativity. The inability to allow oneself to relax sufficiently to let fantasy material into awareness seriously restricts the creative imagination. Even if you do want to part from me, I will still thank you for leaving me with a wonderful experience worthy of my memory. I am awake, open my eyes, and this moment when everything is still, I close my eyes, and then we kiss, your love comes alive on my lips.
