Fear of Self: Everyone thinks they will be the Exception

What poor excuses will good heads make for the evils they are put upon by bad hearts! The eyes have longer been considered the windows of the soul, which means they convey what a person may be experiencing. If you doubt someone’s word, you may ask them to look you in the eye. Many seasoned inspectors claim to have detected propaganda by watching the eyes of their subjects. Psychologists believe that such instances we are mainly interested in the size of a person’s pupils. Emotion affects the pupils. Specifically, arousal, interest, or attention can activate the sympathetic nervous system and cause the pupils to dilate (enlarge).

Dilation of the pupils can occur during both pleasant and unpleasant emotions. Despite this face, most people tend to interpret large pupils as a sign of pleasant feelings and small pupils as a sign of negative feelings. When researchers showed two photographs of an attractive young woman to a group of men; in one photograph, the woman’s pupils were large, and in the other photograph, her pupils were small. The men consistently described the woman with the large pupils as soft, feminine, or pretty.  The same woman, with small pupils, was described as hard, selfish, and cold. This effect does not just apply to women. People of both sexes consider both men and women with enlarged pupils to be more attractive. (Perhaps at long last, we know why bad guys in movies always have beady eyes!)

So are wondering, why are so people so weird and seem to fake or act when they are in public? Well, the answer could be a number of things. Perhaps they are lying to obtain government benefits, which they are not entitled to, or they may have social phobia. In a social phobia, the person fears social situations in which he or she can be observed, evaluated, embarrassed, or humiliated by others. This leads affected person to avoid certain social situations, such as eating, writing, using the rest room, speaking in public, or being around certain people. When the situation cannot be avoided, the person endures it with intense anxiety or distress. Social phobias greatly impair functioning at work, at school, in social activities, or in personal relationships. About 13 percent of all adults are affected by social phobias at one time or another.

He who can sit down premeditatedly to do bad actions will content himself with a bad excuse: and yet, what fools must he suppose the rest of the World to be, if he imagines them as easy to be imposed upon, as he can impose upon himself? To say that a thing must be one or the other is to miss the significance of the whole. Some men are scared of men, in other words they fear themselves. There was once a man, who was so crippled by obsessive thoughts, about being gay and attracted to other men, that he was unable to live independently and had to move back in with his parents, after in stint in a state mental hospital, to cope.

It turns out the man had Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, associated with homosexuality. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, associated with homosexuality, is a preoccupation with certain distressing thoughts and feelings, about being homosexual, and feelings of compulsion to perform certain behaviors. True obsessions are images or thoughts that intrude into consciousness against a person’s will. These emotions are so disturbing that they cause anxiety or extreme discomfort.

The particular patient, a young male, who we will call Peter, was so obsessed with being gay that it gave rise to compulsions, which are irrational acts a person feels driven to repeat. Often times when Peter was in close contact with another male, who he found attractive, but fear being rejected by, Peter get extremely uncomfortable and run out of the room, like he had seen a ghost; however, Peter admitted that he had some sort of feeling that he was attracted to others guys, and upon physical examination, it was apparent that he had recently had a sexual encounter with another male or an adult toy for arousal.

Peter claimed that he was straight, but he had intrusive thoughts that were not based on any hard reality. After further research, it became clear that Peter did not need to be treated for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but he needed proper treatment for a sexual orientation crisis that has nothing to do with mental illness. Peter had a sexual obsession and suffered from pathological doubt. Even though Peter knew he was 100 heterosexual, not gay, but he second guessed his sexual preference. For example, Peter would say things like, “I spent way too much time in class looking at that other guy. What does that mean?” Peter got lost in the need to know—the need to be sure.

Occasionally, a person learns they are gay, but because they are some, with limited experience, in life, they have a hard time dealing with the feelings and urges, or a fear of contracting a disease.  Many people falsely assume that just because homosexuals are generally accepted, that people will have no issue dealing with their sexuality. However, often times young men and sometimes older men fear what their father and mother will think, and their peers, so they act out, in an irrational manner, when they are near men that they have feelings for. Peter did not have general obsessive compulsive disorder because he was comfortable around men, he did not find attractive, and underage boys.

Therefore, it became clear to doctors that Peter actually had a phobia of being around attractive men. He would frequently chase women down the block, or obsess about women, as a method of trying to convince others that he was not homosexual.  It is possible that Peter even got subtle body sensations,  being aroused by another man, and did not know who to deal with these feelings, so he would freak out. The only way to treat Peter is that he needs to attain self-acceptance. Also, in Peter’s case, medication may be effective in treatment, in addition to behavioral therapy. Changing thinking patterns of anxious individuals can greatly lessen their fears.

Harris 019

What to do when your burden is overwhelming? Cast your burden on the Lord. You have been bearing it all, but you need to deliberately place one end on God’s shoulder. Commit to God, whatever burden He has placed on you.

2

Do not just cast it aside, but put it over onto Him and place yourself there with it. You will see that your burden is then lightened by the sense of companionship. However, you should never try to separate yourself from your burden.  Everyone thinks they will be the exception.
