Melodrama the Contemporary Dramatists

Moderation in success is necessary to its ultimate advantage. Thomas said to him, Lord, how will I know the way and the truth and the life. God responded, I am the way to the truth. Therefore, it is important to take your religion seriously. Senior generations are not always the most successful, because they are afraid of accident and leave too little to chance, while the know-nothing, fear-nothing, has oftentimes been the secret of fortunate adventure, there are virtues which are their own reward, so there are vices which are amply their own punishment.

305

Virtue can slumber, even in the midst of misfortune. Virtue has its own rewards and vice its own punishment. Chastity is as great a virtue in a man as in a woman. Learning does not necessarily civilize, and…a man (may) remain a lettered barbarian. In the theater people, we may find a different vanity, prima donnas of both genders, and a disposition to assorted kinds of perverse behavior. We should not intimate that these manifestations of egotism—the vanity or condescension of the university, or the self-indulgences of life are the rule. The point is simply that the guardianship of the mysteries does not guarantee largeness of mind or gentleness of bearing. If those closest to the source of values often remain untouched, we may wonder what hope there is for ordinary men who approach the sacred fount only now and then. 311

If these ordinary men do not find truth or governance or benign influence, what else may they come upon? Consolation or comfort or support? Hardly, at least in any obvious or immediate sense, the tragedies record profound catastrophes in the World and in the self; though they do come to rest on a note of moral recovery, this has a slenderness in which there is no easy assurance about the general tenor of life. If all ends well, still has required some extraordinary ingenuity and good fortune to bring a chilly and selfish husband to the acceptance of his devoted wife.

One has to be morally and psychologically omniscient, and superhumanly astute in practical affairs, to prevent his Kingdom from falling into the moral depths opened up before us by the self-serving of these critics. The tardy abjuring of their feud is slender compensation for the injuries sustained when the pursuit of family honor recognized no bounds. Hence, one would be surprised to find a note of blessedness to come, or of an ever-present help in trouble. There is indeed a subtle balance of the forces of damnation and salvation, as in the Christian vision, but this unillusioned photograph of reality hardly afford the faithful the comforting sense of cosmic well-being sometimes apparently derived from religious experience.

Emptiness can be a very beneficial idea. Sometimes we must empty ourselves of everything in order to make room for something good and full to come in. Those who practice meditation know that one of its goals is to get rid of all extraneous thoughts and feelings, to make room for something new and Rich. In our present discussion, we extend this idea to mean that when we work, we should empty ourselves of the worries and concerns of the workaday World. If I go to work, whether a simple weekend morning or year-long assignment, I must want to forget the fatiguing responsibilities and cares of my work. According to Jewish thought, God created the World in six days, and rested on the seventh—now called the Sabbath.

Our English word sabbatical comes from that same root; it is used to refer to educational institutions practice of providing for teachers well-being and development by giving them a sabbatical, a year-long leave, once every seven years. A few corporations are beginning to give their employees similar extended periods of time off every few years, with partial or full pay, to provide times of full rest, recuperation, and recharging. We think these companies are wise. Even if the employees do nothing directly related to their work, during this time, they will grow. The individual will come back to work refreshed and renewed, and they will probably do better, more productive work, plus having a better feeling about working for a company that is concerned with its employees overall health.

Nothing renders the soul so callous and insensible as the searing brands of infamy and disgrace. A man without sensibility exhibits no sign of a soul. The contempt of life is not meritorious I itself; on the contrary, self-preservation is enjoined by the law of nature. Vision, the ability to see, is possibly the most important means of sensation-gathering available to any living being with optical sensors. We all have been impressed with stories of blind people who somehow manage not only to survive but succeed superbly. Success stories of men like Alec Templeton and Ray Charles and women like Helen Keller mystify those of us who can see fine and yet cannot even make their fingers work out Human Rights and The United States of America on a laptop. We know how panicky some people feel with the lights go out, how unsure some are when we walk into a dark room, or try to drive when heavy sun obscures the car windshield. If I say I cannot see the other side of the moon, you understand that we have here a problem in location and perspective. I cannot see the far side of that orbiting quartz crystal in the sky (and neither can you!) if I stay here on Earth because of the relative position of the two bodies. The problem has nothing to do with the quality of my vision.

The secret of the heart is its pressing love of self. Perception is the process of interpreting the information brought to the brain by the sense.  I cannot see you well because I have lost my glasses. That is something very different. That refers to something entirely different. The problem is that my eyes cannot function correctly without an assistant, which I am lacking at the moment. Localization of function means that the type of sensation you experience depends on the area of the brain that is activated. Some brain areas receive visual information; others get auditory information; still others receive taste, touch, and so forth. Know which brain areas are active would tell us, in general, what kinds of sensations you are feeling. Sensory localization may someday make it possible to artificially stimulate the brain to restore sight, hearing, or other senses. Researchers have already used a miniature television camera to send electrical signals to the visual cortex of the brains. It is fascinating to realize that experiences such as audio and visual take place in the brain, not in the eye or ear. Each sense organ is extremely important, and is the first critical link in a long chain of events that connects to the brain.

Much as many of you would like to think, everything you know, take it and throw it away. Sensory systems do not operate like cameras or tape recorders, sending back photos of the World. Rather, they collect, transduce, analyze, code, and transmit an unending flow of data to an active, information-hungry biocomputer. This fluid inflow on information is what we refer to as sensation. These organs are our link to reality. You need your psychological sensations to determine loudness, brightness, or taste.  Corneal ulcers and infection can adversely impact your perceptual features and cause damage to sensory coding. The eye’s receptor cells, which normally respond to light, are somewhat sensitive to pressure. The cornea is a clear membrane at the front of the eye. It protects the iris and the pupil and the lens.

225

However, sometimes your eyes may need a little attention. A corneal ulcer is an erosion or open sore in the outer layer of the cornea. It is often caused by an infection. Corneal ulcers can occur if you wear contact lenses for more than 16 hours a day, or if your eye is somehow damaged or infected. Corneal ulcers are most commonly caused by an infection with bacteria, viruses, fungi, or a parasite.  Acanthamoeba Keratitis can occur in contact lens users, especially in people who make their own homemade cleaning solutions. Fungal Keratitis can occur after corneal injury involving plant material or in people with a suppressed immune system. Stress may cause repeated attacks that trigger a harsh response to exposure to the sun, as stress impairs the immune system. Corneal ulcers or infections may also be caused by eyelids that do not close all the way, such as with Bell’s palsy. Or foreign bodies in the eye, scratches (abrasions) on the eye surface, severely dry eyes, severe allergic eye disease; various inflammatory disorders, and contact lenses wear, especially soft contact lenses worn overnight—may cause a corneal ulcer.

If you already suffer from Ulcerative Colitis, which is an inflammation of the small intestine, which can cause bleeding, you need to pay careful attention to your eyes. If you develop any issues, they can be remediated quickly and without worry. Even if you have perfect vision, please visit the optometrist every other year to ensure your eyes stay beautiful. No matter if you use them to see or just as decorations for your attractive face. Remember, all shapes, sizes and colors of eyes are perfect. Silence is the only Voice of our God (he does not have much to say).  I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him with your beautiful eyes.  And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You make ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of Truth. The World cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him.
