How much better it is to be useful than rich or fine; how much more amiable to be good than to be great; the greatest merit any person could have is to be good and useful. About 10 million lives are saved each year by police, highway patrol and our armed services. National Human Rights Day is coming up on 10 December 2014. It is generally the conscious over-fullness of conceit that makes the hypocrite most upon one’s guard to conceal lady justice. Strong mind programs perceive that justice is the highest of the moral attributes; mercy is only the favorite of the weak ones. I learned in time that this benignity this cordiality, this music, belonged in no shape to me: it was a part of himself it was the honey of his temper: it was the balm of his mellow mood he imparted it, as the ripe fruit rewards with sweetness the rifling bee; he the bee or the bird it feeds? Is the sweet-briar enamored of air? Nothing is so provoking as that a man should preach viciously and act virtuously.

The generality of mankind is too corrupt to be governed by the great universal law of social nature. Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the World, whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advert of a World in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people, whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations, whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom; all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

Humans are endowed with reason and conscience and should act toward one another in sprit of love and happiness. Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it is independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty. Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person. There is kind of sympathy in honest minds, by means of which they give an easy credit to each other. It is impossible for the historian, with even the best intentions, to control events or compel the persons of his narrative to act wisely or to be successful. It is easy to see how things might have been better managed; a very little change here and there would have made a very different history. Modesty is very well in its way; but really a little common honesty is sometimes quite as becoming. Perhaps it is the instinctive trait of most of us to seek an explanation of any great happiness as we are always prone to discuss the causes of our adversity.
